As Kerala HC speaks tough, police registers cases against 3,000

0

After the Kerala high court last week came down heavily on the police for failing to tackle the protests near the state Secretariat despite COVID directives, the police registered cases against 3,000 people, which is said to be a record of sorts.

The Cantonment Police station, housed at a stone’s throw from the office of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, in the state capital has entered into the state record books with this.

It is this police station that looks after the security of the State Secretariat — the seat of power — which for the past eight days has been taken over by the protesters. The protesters include people from all the opposition parties, who are demanding the resignation of State Higher Education Minister K. T.Jaleel.

Jaleel has also entered into the state record books, as he became the first Kerala Minister to be questioned by the NIA and the Enforcement Directorate. He has been questioned for his role in distributing the Holy Quran that was given to him by the UAE Consulate and also the Ramzan kits, which included dates.

This came after it surfaced that all this was happening in the name of the UAE Consulate here and various Central agencies have by now arrested several people including Swapna Suresh and P. S.Sarith, two former employees of the UAE Consulate after it was found out that gold was being smuggled.

The high court, ever since the COVID spread increased in the state, on two occasions had ordered that there should be no protests as it violated the directives of the COVID protocols.

After finding the directives getting ignored, the court again got into the act and last week reiterated that at no cost should the law be broken.

Following this, the Cantonment Police station registered 25 FIR against 3,000 people, including 100 women for taking part in protests that were held in front of the Secretariat.

In the past eight days, the police recorded the arrest of around 500 protesters also.

The maximum cases have been registered against the various wings of the BJP, including the Mahila Morcha, followed by the activists of the various wings of the Congress party.

Golfer DeChambeau clinches US Open title

0

Bryson DeChambeau has stormed his way to a six-shot US Open win.

World No 9 DeChambeau began Sunday with two shots behind US Open debutant Matthew Wolff but clinched his first major title with a mix of stunning drives and clutch putts, shooting a virtually flawless three-under-par 67 to reach six-under for the tournament.

Wolff (75) was one shot back of DeChambeau at the turn but fell apart over a back nine that included two bogeys and a double-bogey.

“It’s just an honor,” said DeChambeau as quoted by US Open’s official website, usopen.com.

“I don’t know what else to say. It’s been a lot of hard work. Mr. Nicklaus has been always awesome to me. Tiger has always been great to me. I can’t say thank you enough to them for helping push me along to be a better person and a better golfer, as well. To be in the likes of that company is special. I’ll forever appreciate that.”

Sixty of the 61 competitors who completed the championship on a chilly and breezy late-summer day battled the West Course to a draw – or much worse (75.03 stroke average), as per a report on the website.

Samsung’s robotics wearable earns ISO certification

0

Samsung said on Monday that its exoskeleton has met the International Organisation for Standardization’s safety requirements as the South Korean tech firm spurs to release home bots in the market.

Samsung said the GEMS (Gait Enhancing and Motivating System) Hip exoskeleton received the ISO 13482 certification from the Korea Institute for Robot Industry Advancement, becoming the first South Korean company to earn such accreditation.

The exoskeleton could help correct body posture and assist with everyday walking.

The ISO 13482 certification states safety standards for three personal care bots: mobile servant robots, physical assistant robots, and person carrier robots.

Samsung GEMS, a robotics wearable that assists users who have trouble walking, running or standing up, was introduced last year, reports Yonhap news agency.

It currently has three models: the GEMS Hip, GEMS Knee, and GEMS Ankle.

Samsung said its GEMS Hip, an exoskeleton worn on the waist, reduces energy expenditure by 24 percent while walking and increases walking speed by about 14 percent.

The GEMS Hip also earned the ISO 13849 certification, which applies to safety-related parts of control systems, it added.

“Unlike industrial robots, personal care robots are operated by people in their daily lives, so safety is the most important factor,” the company said. “We will apply differentiated safety technologies for various robot products to help consumers improve their quality of life.”

Trump’s order on WeChat ban temporarily banned

0

A US judge has temporarily halted President Donald Trump’s executive order to ban WeChat, a Chinese messaging, social media, and mobile payment app.

The ban was slated to go into effect Sunday night, reports Xinhua news agency.

Magistrate Judge Laurel Beeler in San Francisco issued the order earlier on Sunday granting a motion for a preliminary injunction, which determined the restrictions placed on WeChat could violate the Constitutional Amendment rights of its users in the US.

“The result is that consumers in the US cannot download or update the WeChat app, use it to send or receive money, and because US support for the app by data hosting and content caching will be eliminated, the app, while perhaps technically available to existing US users, likely will be useless to them,” Judge Beeler wrote in her order.

The order came after three days of consecutive hearings.

The plaintiffs, including the US WeChat Users Alliance (USWUA) and other app users, argued that WeChat is irreplaceable for its users in the US, particularly in the Chinese-speaking and Chinese-American community.

On August 6, Trump issued an executive order banning US transactions via WeChat.

To fight for the legal rights of all WeChat users in the country, USWUA, an NGO, sued the Trump administration for the ban.

The lawsuit opened in court on September 17.

On Friday, the Commerce Department issued the Identification of Prohibited Transactions.

Shivamani on Amitabh Bachchan singing his composition in ‘Atkan Chatkan’

Renowned percussionist Shivamani made his debut as a film music director with the recent OTT release, Atkan Chatkan, and among his glittering line-up of playback singers was screen icon, Amitabh Bachchan.

He says he could only think of Bachchan’s voice after composing the song “Daata shakti de” for the film, to bring alive the number’s spiritual, motivational, and inspirational tone.

“I have to mention how the whole song happened and why Mr. Bachchan sir. We wanted to create a song that goes beyond a religious song and be more of a spiritual, motivational, inspirational song. Especially the crisis that we have been through in the last few months, we need music that makes us stand up, motivate to fight, and not give up. ‘Data shakti de’ came from that thought,” the master percussionist told IANS.

While composing, he thought of Amitabh Bachchan “because for so many decades, even right now, at this very moment, he is an inspiration for people across the country”.

“To try my luck, I had a word with him and sent the song to him with a request if he would like to lend his voice,” he said, adding: “I cannot emphasize enough how lucky I felt that he heard the composition and very happily sung the song for us. He is a very good singer, I would say.”

“I would also like to mention that he did not charge any money! It was the same thing with Hariharan anna and Sonu Nigam Ji (other leading singers who recorded for the film), because, again, they are also some of the greatest talents of the nation. But they were so generous with me that they lent their voice because they believed in the song and the story of the film,” Shivamani noted.

The song is written by Runaa Rizvii Shivamani who, incidentally, made her debut as a film lyricist with the number.

“This was my first written song, composed by Shivamani and sung by Amitabh Bachchan. I could not have asked for more. Initially, some prominent lyricist was supposed to write the song but since they were occupied and could not accommodate time, Shiv ji said why not me,” recalled Runaa.

She added: “Being a singer and coming from a musical family, I always had a flair of writing in Hindi and Urdu. But I am a vocalist and had never written anything professionally. So I wasn’t sure. However, everything fell in place and the song came outright.”

The film is on a 12-year-old chai delivery boy named Guddu, whose passion is to observe, listen, and create new sounds. Rising beyond his daily mundane life, he forms a band with three other street children.

The film featured child pianist Lydian Nadhaswaram, who is also a protege of music maestro AR Rahman, who has presented the film.

Asked about his reunion with Rahman for the film, Shivamani replied: “Rahman is my brother, what do you mean by reuniting? We are always exchanging (ideas), and have never lost touch. Yes, the intention behind the film was to celebrate dreams. Most web series and shows online are very toxic in nature. He was very happy to watch the film, and that is why decided to present the film. Rahman met me when he was 10 years old, and I am just a couple of years elder to him. In a way, we have grown up as friends, together. He is family.”

“Atkan Chatkan” streams on Zee5.

Delhi Capitals clinch a Super Over thriller against KXIP

0

Dubai, Sep 21 (IANS/GloFans) After being pushed to the brink, the Delhi Capitals (DC) held their nerve to edge out the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in a heart-stopping Super Over decider to open their IPL campaign on a positive note here on Sunday.

After the 20-over-per innings match was tied at 157 runs, the Super Over was enforced and in the pressure cooker situation, Shreyas Iyer’s Delhi team prevailed at the Sharjah International Cricket Stadium.

Bowling first in the Super Over, Delhi’s South African pacer Kagiso Rabada kept his cool to snare two wickets and concede just a couple of runs to KL Rahul’s team.

Chasing, Delhi easily hunted down the three-run target to start their campaign with a thrilling victory.

Earlier, in the match proper, KXIP opener Mayank Agarwal’s heroics (89 off 60) went in vain, as his team failed to overhaul the 158-run target in 20 overs, and the contest entered the Super Over. Mayank’s knock contained seven boundaries and four sixes.

Chasing a moderate 158-run target, Punjab started their proceedings slowly and steadily before Mohit Sharma struck to dismiss Punjab opener Rahul (21 off 19) with their scorecard reading 30/1 in 4.3 overs.

Ace off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin then joined the party as he scalped two wickets — of Karun Nair (1) and Nicholas Pooran (0) — in the fifth over before Glenn Maxwell (1) became the victim of Kagiso Rabada in the very next over.

While wickets kept falling at the one end, Mayank kept the scorecard ticking and with little support from Sarfaraz Khan (12) and Krishnappa Gowtham (20), took his side past the three-digit mark in 15.1 overs.

After Gowtham’s departure in the 16th over, Mayank fought a lone battle and almost pulled an emphatic win for his side before Man-of-the-Match Marcus Stoinis struck at a time when it mattered the most. He sent back a dangerous-looking Mayank off the second last ball of the 20th and final over.

With just one run needed off the final delivery, Stoinis claimed the wicket of Chris Jordan (5) to take the match into the Super Over.

For Delhi, Stoinis, Rabada, and Ashwin, who suffered a shoulder injury and left the field after his first over, picked two wickets each.

Earlier, Delhi Capitals rode a fantastic cameo by Stoinis (53 off 21 balls) to post 157/8 in the allotted 20 overs even as Punjab pacer Mohammed Shami starred with the ball, picking three wickets for just 15 runs.

Asked to bat, Delhi had a worst possible start as they lost three wickets in quick succession and that saw the Shreyas Iyer-led side being reduced to 13/3 in the first four overs.

While Shami accounted for the wicket of opener Prithvi Shaw (5) and Shimron Hetmyer (7), a little confusion while stealing a run cost the wicket of Shikhar Dhawan, who returned to the pavilion without troubling the scorers.

Rishabh Pant (31 off 29) and skipper Iyer (39 off 32) then tried to repair the damage after forging a 73-run partnership for the fourth wicket and prevented the Punjab bowlers making any further inroads.

The duo, however, succumbed while trying to accelerate the run-rate as Ravi Bishnoi scalped his maiden IPL wicket when he got rid of Pant.

Things once again worsened for Delhi as a settled Iyer also departed soon, thanks to some quality bowling by Shami.

Just when it looked as if Punjab were regaining control of the contest, Stoinis came as a nightmare for the KXIP bowlers, clobbering most of them all around the park. The Aussie batter hammered Chris Jordan for 24 runs in the final over before departing.

The 31-year-old’s explosive batting ensured his side posted a fighting total. His knock was laced with seven boundaries and three huge hits that sent the ball into the stands. Sheldon Cottrell picked two wickets for 24 runs.

Brief scores: Delhi Capitals 157/8 (20 overs) & 3/0 off 3 balls in Super Over beat Kings XI Punjab 157/8 (20 overs) & 2/2 off 3 balls in Super Over

How will the govt ensure farmers get MSP, asks Chidambaram

0

As Parliament passed the two contentious agricultural Bills on Sunday, former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram asked the government how it will guarantee that farmers get the minimum support price (MSP) for their produce.

“Agriculture Minister says that government will guarantee that the farmer will get MSP. Private trade takes place even today. The price paid to the farmer is invariably less than MSP. If the Agriculture Minister can magically ensure MSP, why has he not done that so far?” he said, in a series of tweets.

“How will the Minister know which farmer sold his produce to which trader? How will he know the millions of transactions that will take place every day all over the country? If he does not have the data, how will he guarantee MSP is paid in every transaction?” Chidambaram said.

“Does the Minister and the government think that the farmers are so foolish to believe the empty promise of the government?”

Charging the Modi government with not fulfilling its earlier promises, he asked if it had managed to put Rs 15 lakh in the bank account of every Indian, doubled farmers incomes and created 2 crore jobs every year.

On Sunday, the Congress and other opposition parties objected to the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020 and the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020 as they were presented in the Rajya Sabha and demanded they be sent to a select committee.

The bills, which have already been passed by the Lok Sabha earlier this week, were subsequently passed amid protests and walkouts by opposition members.

Tripura Guv stresses on need for govt, media relations

0

Tripura Governor Ramesh Bais has stressed upon the positive relations between the government and the media, saying that he would take initiatives to uphold this tradition, an official said on Sunday.

The Governor reportedly made this comment when a six-member team of the ‘Tripura Assembly of Journalists (TJA)’, met him at the Raj Bhavan on Saturday on the issue of Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb’s reported “threats to the media”.

The TJA, a body comprising editors, journalists and media personnel, since September 13, has been agitating to withdraw the Chief Minister’s alleged “threats to the media” in an official function at Sabroom (in southern Tripura) on September 11.

TJA Chairman and veteran Editor Subal Kumar Dey, who led the delegation to the Governor, said that after the Chief Minister’s alleged “threat”, four journalists were attacked in different parts of the state but the police did not take any action against the attackers whereas the Chief Minister remained silent.

Demanding withdrawal of the comments made by the Chief Minister, the TJA submitted a detailed memorandum to the Governor.

The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) has claimed that Deb’s comments were taken out of context.

An official of the CMO said that the present state government in Tripura is committed towards press freedom, rights of media and the welfare of the journalists.

“During the lockdown period, the government had arranged vehicles for transporting newspapers to various districts and sub-divisions, increased the journalists’ pension from Rs 1,000 to Rs 10,000, provided financial aid to newspaper hawkers among other welfare activities to support the media. But a section of the media are trying to malign the image of the government, exaggerating the facts with some motives,” the official said.

Diesel prices fall again on easing global crude prices

0

Diesel prices continued to decline for the fourth consecutive day on Sunday on the back of falling global crude prices.

In the national capital, diesel was priced at Rs 71.58 per litre, down from Rs 71.82 on Saturday.

Similarly in the other metros of Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata, the fuel was sold for Rs 78.02, Rs 76.99 and Rs 75.09 on Sunday, respectively, against the previous levels of Rs 78.27, Rs 77.21 and Rs 75.32 per litre.

The recent fall in transport fuel prices comes in the wake of softening of global oil prices as an extended run of Covid-19 has depressed demand and created a glut in the market.

Prices of petrol, however, remained unchanged for the second straight day at Rs 81.14, Rs 87.82, Rs 84.21 and Rs 82.67 per litre across Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata, respectively.

Andhra’s second Kisan Rail chugs off for Delhi with tomatoes, fruits

0

Eleven days after the virtual flagging off of the first South Indian Kisan Rail from Anantapur in AP, the second one chugged off on Sunday morning from the southern state, laden with tomatoes and fruits to Nagpur and New Delhi.

“Second rake of Kisan Rail has started from Anantapur station in the early hours of Sunday to reach Adarsh Nagar in New Delhi,” said a South Central Railway (SCR) zone official.

Loaded with 262 tonnes of agricultural produce, the Kisan train is ferrying 239 tonnes of tomatoes and 23 tonnes of fruits such as papaya and others.

Expected to reach the national capital on Monday, the 12-parcel van train will unload three vans carrying 67 tonnes of tomatoes in Nagpur in Maharashtra, enroute to Delhi.

Nagpur is 882 km north of Anantapur while New Delhi is roughly 2,000 km north of the Rayalaseema town.

Kisan Rail is Indian Railways bit to fulfil Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of doubling farmers’ income in India.

“An announcement was made in the Union Budget 2020 – 21 about the operation of Kisan trains and accordingly Kisan Rails were started,” he said.

These trains are enabling farmers to ship their produce to places where there are markets to buy their wares.

Music composer-singer Payal Dev says she had fun composing the song ‘LOL’, and feels that millennials will relate to the feel-good track.
