Rhea Chakraborty’s 2019 tweet on narcotic trafficking goes viral

A one-year-old tweet by actress Rhea Chakraborty, who has been arrested by the Narcotics Central Bureau (NCB) in a drug case, as part of the probe into the death of her late boyfriend, actor Sushant Singh Rajput, has gone viral on social media.

Rhea’s posted the tweet, about an Indian girl jailed for narcotics trafficking, in November 2019.

“Just stepped out of a weird scary engrossing story of an Indian girl…. who served 4 n a half year jail sentence for narcotics trafficking,” Rhea had written.

Social media users were quick to find a link between the old tweet and Rhea’s current reality.

A user wrote in the comment section: “What a prophecy. Rhea is India’s answer to @JofraArcher.

A second person said: “Nostradamus, predicted her own future.”

“Who knew Rhea was talking about herself”, said another.

One user tagged her as a “time traveler” and said: “Maybe she’s a time traveler who visits her own story to warn herself, but she isn’t too smart to get the clues.”

Rhea was arrested on Tuesday by the NCB. She has been charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act for her alleged role in the drugs angle that has emerged during an investigation into the June 14 death of Sushant.

Surekha Sikri stable but under observation

Veteran actress Surekha Sikri, who was hospitalized after suffering a brain stroke on Tuesday, is stable but under the observation of doctors.

Sharing details, the actress’ agent Vivek Sidhwani told IANS: “Surekha Ji is doing fine but she continues to be monitor closely and the next few days are crucial. That is what the doctors said. This is the second time she suffered a brain stroke after 2018 when she had it for the first time. So we will be asking all her well-wishers to pray for her speedy recovery.”

While initial reports said the actress has been going through a financial crisis and that has affected her health treatment, Sidhwani clarified: “I saw that report came out yesterday and that is absolutely incorrect. Yesterday we were so occupied with the hospital, doctor, and everything that we could not even clear that it is wrong information. Surekha Jim’s immediate family is taking care of all her finance and she also has her own finances. There is no financial assistance that we are taking from anywhere else.”

However, according to the spokesperson, a few industry colleagues have come forward with financial help.

“Few film directors and actors and well-wishers have reached out to us, offering financial assistance after reading the report. I want to say that we are financially doing fine. Surekha Ji’s health is under observation, but please pray for her good health. That is all we need right now,” he added.

Sikri was last seen in Zoya Akhtar’s segment of the OTT anthology film “Ghost Stories” that released earlier this year. The actress won National Awards for her roles in the films “Tamas”, “Mammo” and “Badhaai Ho”.

SC declines fresh petitions for postponement of NEET

0

The Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to entertain fresh petitions to seek postponement of NEET (UG) 2020 for admissions to undergraduate medical and dental courses, slated to be held on September 13.

A bench comprising Justices Ashok Bhushan, R Subhash Reddy, and MR Shah said that is not inclined to examine the matter as the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (UG) is scheduled to be held in a few days.

The National Testing Agency will hold the NEET (UG) for admissions to MBBS/BDS and other undergraduate medical courses in approved/recognized medical/dental and other colleges/institutes in India.

The apex court had rejected a bunch of PILs as well as a review petition filed by six Ministers from non-BJP ruled states to seek postponement of the exam.

The bench said: “Everything is over now. A review has been dismissed. The JEE is over. How can we consider this now?”

Senior Advocate Arvind Datar, appearing for one of the petitioners, contended that they are asking for the exam postponement and sought to highlight the practical difficulties faced by students.

Datar cited an example of Bihar, where there are only two examination centers.

The bench replied that all arrangements will be made for NEET. It said that there cannot be different dates for holding an entrance test in different states.

Datar urged the top court to consider postponement of NEET for three weeks.

Senior Advocate KTS Tulsi, representing another petitioner, argued that Covid-19 cases are increasing rapidly, and cited a record surge of nearly 90,000 coronavirus cases in a day. Tulsi also cited a Bombay High Court order, wherein it said that candidates who could not appear for the exam should be appropriately considered.

The bench said that it was for the examination body to decide, and not the court.

Advocate Shoeb Alam, appearing for a petitioner, submitted that there was some lacuna in the National Testing Agency guidelines. He also referred to the guidelines and advisory issued for students in containment zones etc to take the exam later on.

The bench observed that the authorities concerned will take all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of candidates.

Alam insisted that local authorities may be directed to ensure that the guidelines are enforced properly, to which the court replied that all this will be done.

How Google Android 11 aims to protect your work, personal data

0

With Android 11, Google is offering new work profile improvements that make Android even more private and productive for employees using both personal and company-owned devices.

To better support company-owned devices, the work profile now offers device controls like asset management tools and personal usage policies that give IT the ability to keep devices compliant with a corporate policy without compromising employee privacy.

Regardless of who owns the device, industry-leading data separation and security controls help ensure work data is secure in the work profile.

“To give employees more information about their location privacy, we’ve added a new notification whenever their IT admin grants location access to work apps,” Google said in a blog post on Tuesday.

“We’ve also enhanced our agreements with device manufacturers to help ensure all work profile privacy protections are reliably enforced”.

A new Media research survey of 700 IT decision-makers found that 80 percent of respondents believed personal data should be kept private from IT on a company-owned device.

The work profile makes the separation of work and personal data visible and usable for employees.

“We’re taking that even further in Android 11 by expanding work and personal separation to more places throughout Android,” Google said.

Employees will now see separate tabs for work and personal when they share files, open content, or go into their settings menu.

Android 11 will remove unwanted distractions when the work profile is paused and enable employees to automatically pause work apps according to their own schedule.

“For those times when it’s helpful to view work and personal data at the same time, we’ve built a new secure mechanism for merged experiences, allowing trusted apps to connect between work and personal profiles,” Google said.

“Both employees and IT must approve the way an app will handle security and user privacy before allowing an app to connect”.

Google Calendar will soon allow people to see personal events in their work calendar, helping to better schedule around commitments across their day.

Personal calendar events will remain privately stored on the device in the personal profile, invisible to both colleagues and IT.

In Android 11, Google is investing more in security and management features that provide organizations with more protection for their data.

It includes more IT controls for always-on VPN configurations and the ability to pre-grant certificate access for work apps, among others.

Doors might be closed not locked: Semenya after losing testosterone rules appeal

0

“Doors might be closed not locked”, said double Olympic 800 meters champion Caster Semenya after she lost her long-running legal battle against regulations requiring women with high testosterone to take medication to compete internationally between 400m and a mile.

“Chills my people, a man can change the rules but the very same man can not rule my life, what I’m saying is that I might have failed against them the truth is that I have won this battle long ago, go back to my achievements then you will understand. Doors might be closed not locked,” the South African said in a tweet following the ruling by the Swiss Federal Tribunal on Tuesday.

Semenya, an Olympic 800m gold medallist in 2012 and 2016, was challenging the World Athletics regulations which restrict testosterone levels in female athletes. The verdict is a blow to her hopes of being able to defend her 800m title at the Tokyo Olympics, now scheduled for next year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, World Athletics welcomed the verdict and said: “For the last five years, World Athletics (formerly IAAF) has fought for and defended equal rights and opportunities for all women and girls in our sport today and in the future.

“We, therefore, welcome today’s decision by the Swiss Federal Tribunal (SFT) to uphold our DSD Regulations as a legitimate and proportionate means of protecting the right of all female athletes to participate in our sport on fair and meaningful terms.

“We are committed to the full participation of women in the sport of athletics, be that as elite female athletes in fair and meaningful competition, as young girls developing life and sport skills, or as administrators or officials.

While there is a lot of work to be done, we are at the forefront of this work, not just for our own sport but for all sport,” it said in a statement.

Rajasthan CM postpones all meetings for one month

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has postponed all meetings for a month beginning from Wednesday.

The decision came on Tuesday night, a state government press release said.

Around 40 employees in the Chief Minister’s residence and office were found COVID infected. They also included the police and Rajasthan Armed Constabulary (RAC) personnel, who were associated with the Chief Minister’s security.

Gehlot said following the norms of social distancing and health protocols are the main measures that can fight the spread of Covid-19. This infection can be controlled by protecting ourselves.

“For this reason, on the advice of doctors, I have decided not to meet anyone for the next month. However, I will participate via video conference for matters to discuss good governance,” he said in the release.

Gehlot said that in this crisis of the Covid-19 epidemic, protecting the lives of the people of the state was the highest priority of the government. For this, the state government was making every effort by strengthening the medical facilities, but the infection of this epidemic can be prevented with everyone’s support, he said.

The Chief Minister appealed to the people of the country to wear masks, keep social distancing, avoid crowds, keep social interactions to a minimum, leave home only when necessary and cater to all other health protocols with full responsibility.

Covid-stress may be hard to beat even with exercise

0

Exercise has been shown to reduce anxiety and stress, but now in a major study, the researchers have revealed that it may not be enough for the levels caused by Covid-19.

People who reported increasing their physical activity after the start of Covid-19 stay-at-home orders reported higher levels of stress and anxiety than those whose activity levels stayed the same, the study, published in the journal PLOS ONE reported.

“Certainly, people who don’t exercise know that there are associations with mental health outcomes, yet the ones that increased their exercise also reported increased anxiety and stress,” said lead author Glen Duncan from the Washington State University.

For the study, the research team analyzed data from over 900 pairs of identical and same-sex fraternal twins from the Washington State Twin Registry.

Of the survey respondents, 42 percent reported decreasing levels of physical activity since the COVID crisis began, and 27 percent said they had increased their activities. Another 31 percent reported no change.

Participants were asked about changes in their physical activity compared to one month previously.

Those who reported a decrease in physical activity within two-weeks after the start of stay-at-home orders had a perceived higher level of stress and anxiety, which was expected.

But surprisingly, many of the respondents who increased their physical activity felt the same way.

The researchers found that the association between decreased physical activity and stress was confounded by genetic and environmental factors.

The researchers found some association between decreased physical activity and anxiety: within a pair of twins, the sibling with decreased physical activity had higher levels of anxiety than the sibling who reported no change.

In addition, anxiety levels were higher among older people and women.

“It’s not necessary that exercise won’t help you personally manage stress. It’s just that there is something genetically and environmentally linking the two,” Duncan said.

Recently, a study, published in the journal Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy, revealed that early identification and treatment is vital to avoid long-term mental health consequences from Covid-19 among children and young people.

Google Cloud partners in India to grow much faster by 2025: IDC

0

Google Cloud partners are expected to generate $6.11 in 2020 and up to $8.33 in revenue for every $1 of Google Cloud products sold, giving them an opportunity to grow more than 3.7 times by 2025, an IDC study said on Wednesday.

On average, Google Cloud partners are growing at 35 percent (year-over-year), with a significant group of partners (20 percent) growing even faster, at more than 75 percent.

“The demand for cloud technology and services is growing rapidly in India. The partner ecosystem here is looking to work with cloud providers like us to help businesses of all sizes embark on a digital transformation journey,” said Amitabh Jacob, Head of Partners & Alliances, Google Cloud India.

Nearly 50 percent of Google Cloud partners are in the late stage of digital maturity and more than a third of Google Cloud partners have fully integrated digital into their strategies and businesses.

“Our goal of 100 percent partner attachment will create more opportunities for our partners to provide valuable services to customers and help them build for the future,” Jacob said.

According to the study, not only is Google Cloud partner revenue growing faster than Google Cloud’s revenue, but the net margin opportunity of $121 billion through 2025 will also be well distributed across partner activities globally.

The partners, who are creating their own unique IP around Google Cloud, are seeing very strong margins associated with their products.

“Partners are seeing strong margins across multiple activities, including resale, IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS add-ons, IT services, business services, and support for hardware and networking,” the report mentioned.

“The overall IT market is continuing to see growth as demand for cloud infrastructure and cloud capabilities in areas like data analytics, artificial intelligence, IoT, and security are fast advancing,” said the IDC.

The global pandemic has further accelerated businesses’ needs for these capabilities, seeking to quickly adapt or even to take this opportunity to speed-up their digital transformation journey, it said.

Rani my favourite & I hope to become like her someday, says Lalremsiami

0

Indian women’s hockey team forward Lalremsiami has been one of the go-to players on the national side in the last few years. The 20-year-old, who has played 64 matches for India, has played a part in many important victories for India which include the FIH Women’s Series Finals and FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers last year. However, the forward expressed that the Asia Cup in 2017 was the turning point of her career.

“The Asia Cup 2017 was one among the first international competitions for me and therefore it was very important for me to perform in the tournament. My confidence and belief in my game increased after playing well in the competition. We qualified for the 2018 World Cup after winning that tournament as well, so therefore the Asia Cup 2017 will always remain special for me,” Lalremsiami.

Captain Rani has had a huge influence on Lalremsiami. When the 20-year-old joined the Indian team for the first time in 2017, she didn’t know how to speak in Hindi. Rani, who was Lalremsiami’s roommate, taught her Hindi and was always there to help the player from Mizoram with her game.

“I used to watch Rani di and other senior players on TV before joining the Indian team. Therefore, it’s just brilliant to be playing alongside a player like Rani. She is my favorite player and I hope to become a player like her someday. She has always been there for me.”

“Whenever I have any issue with my game, I have always asked Rani di and she taught me Hindi as well when I had joined the Indian team for the first time. I hope to play alongside Rani for a long time,” said the 20-year-old.

Lalremsiami, who learned the basic techniques of hockey at the Mizoram government-run hockey academy in Thenzawl, said that she is delighted to see the growth of the sport in the north-east.

“Hockey has certainly grown in the north-east in the last few years. We have Sushila Chanu in our team, who has featured in over 150 games for India. Kothajit Singh Khadangbam, Nilakanta Sharma, and Chinglensana Singh Kangujam have also played many matches for the Indian men’s hockey team.

“I am sure if we keep performing for our teams, the youngsters in the North East will be inspired to take up the sport and hockey will grow even further in the region,” said the forward.

Samsung to manufacture Qualcomm chips for 5G smartphones

Samsung has vowed to invest $112 billion to become the world’s No. 1 logic chipmaker by 2030 and bolster its competitiveness in the system LSI and foundry businesses.

Amazon, Apple, Google’s smart home project set for 2021 launch

0

Technology giants Amazon, Apple, and Google who joined forces with Zigbee Alliance for a unified, open-source smart home platform are on track to deliver a draft specification by late 2020 and release the standard in 2021.

According to the Zigbee Alliance, from a few dozen participating companies, it has grown to more than 145 active member companies.

The aim is to develop and promote the adoption of a new, royalty-free connectivity standard to increase compatibility among smart home products, with security as a fundamental design tenet.

The ‘Project Connected Home over IP’ is targeting smart home devices which include lighting and electrical, HVAC controls (thermostats, AC units), access control (door locks, garage doors), safety and security (sensors, detectors, security systems), window coverings/shades, TVs, access points, bridges, and others.

The project was announced in December last year as a unified standard that would make it easier for device manufacturers to create smart home hardware.

“The goal is that future devices will be able to easily add support for all three major voice assistants — Amazon’s Alexa, Apple’s Siri, and Google’s Assistant — at once,” Zigbee Alliance said in a statement on Tuesday.

In turn, that will make it easier to set up and configure smart home devices with your system of choice.

Zigbee Alliance board member companies are IKEA, Legrand, NXP Semiconductors, Resideo, Samsung SmartThings, Schneider Electric, Signify (formerly Philips Lighting), Silicon Labs, Somfy, and Wulian, among others.

“We are thrilled that four new global strategic companies – ASSA ABLOY, Resideo, STMicroelectronics, and Tuya – have joined the Zigbee Alliance’s Board of Directors and are actively contributing to and promoting the Project,” the alliance said.

The goal of the “Connected Home over IP” project is to simplify development for manufacturers and increase compatibility for consumers.

By building upon Internet Protocol (IP), the project aims to enable communication across smart home devices, mobile apps, and cloud services and to define a specific set of IP-based networking technologies for device certification, Apple said in an earlier statement.

The industry working group will take an open-source approach for the development and implementation of a new, unified connectivity protocol.

‘Salaam Namaste’ turns 15: Director Siddharth Anand says film was ahead of time

Salaam Namaste, starring Preity Zinta and Saif Ali Khan, released 15 years ago on this day. Director Siddharth Anand says the film was ahead of its time.

“I think ‘Salaam Namaste’ was dealing with an issue that was taboo or not spoken about, but very much prevalent whether in India or with Indians outside. It felt like it was ahead of its time, but the thing is that there was no deliberate attempt to do something that is scandalous or trying to do something different,” Anand said about the quirky comedy, which tells the story of two young NRIs in Melbourne (played by Saif and Preity), who live together, and the girl subsequently gets pregnant. Upon release, many viewers found shades of similarity between the film and the 1995 Hollywood comedy “Nine Months”.

Anand added: “When the film was releasing and we promoted it (as a story) about live-in relationships, that is when it actually hit me that we were dealing with something which is very new!”

The director said that he never aimed at doing something different or new with the film.

“It was just something like, they are sharing the rent and now they have started seeing each other, so they are going to move from two rooms to one room. That’s living in. So, it was organic, nothing to be scandalous about that I wanted to do something new and cool,” he recalled.

“We didn’t try too hard and it wasn’t in your face. That is why it started a very important conversation in society about Indians living in without getting married,” he claimed.

From Kunal Kohli’s “Hum Tum”, which he scripted, to last year’s blockbuster “War”, Anand says he has never made a deliberate effort to shape pop culture. “I don’t even know if I have. I think just the fact that I started out very young making films, somewhere, being of that age group, what I made resonated with the audience.”

The filmmaker says in his 15-year-long career, he has made six films and that he has tried to do something different each time. “I get bored very easily. I get bored with my own ideas easily. So, I am always trying to do something different,” he said.
