Stokes admits his ‘head wasn’t in it’ following father’s cancer diagnosis

0

England all-rounder Ben Stokes has revealed that he had pulled out of the Pakistan Test series midway in order to be with his family in New Zealand as his father’s cancer diagnosis left him mentally disturbed.

Stokes’ father Gerard, a former Kiwis rugby league international, was diagnosed with the illness in January, soon after returning home from South Africa, where he had fallen sick.

After featuring in the first Test against Pakistan earlier this month, Stokes had left for New Zealand to be with his family.

The England all-rounder has been in isolation in New Zealand in line with the Covid-19 protocols and will be soon joining his family. “I didn’t sleep for a week and my head wasn’t really in it,” Stokes told the New Zealand Herald. “Leaving (the team) was the right choice from a mental point of view.”

Speaking about his father’s influence on his career, the England cricketer said: “He was tough (on me). But as I got older I realized it was all for a reason. He knew I wanted to be a professional sportsman and he was drilling that into me as I started to make a career in cricket.”

Meanwhile, Gerard has revealed after being diagnosed with the illness, he was admitted to a hospital in Johannesburg during England’s tour of South Africa at the start of the year.

“They had to assess how I traveled (to South Africa) and from that, they discovered I had a couple of tumors on my brain as well,” Gerard told NZME. “So, basically brain cancer. How that came about nobody knows but obviously I’ve had a few bangs on my head through my life so that’s probably contributed to it.”

Amazon orders 1800 EVs from Mercedes-Benz in green effort

0

In its bid to address the climate change, Amazon has added more than 1,800 electric vehicles from Mercedes-Benz Vans to its delivery fleet in Europe this year.

Mercedes-Benz also announced on Friday it has joined The Climate Pledge, which calls on new signatories to be net-zero carbon across their businesses by 2040 — a decade ahead of the Paris Agreement goal of 2050.

“We welcome the bold leadership demonstrated by Mercedes-Benz by signing up to The Climate Pledge and committing to ambitious action to address climate change,” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon Founder, and CEO.

More than 1,200 EVs in the order will have the newest electric commercial van available at Mercedes-Benz — the eSprinter, a larger model than the manufacturer’s first zero-emission vehicle, the editor.

The eSprinter includes safety features including, electrical parking brake, active brake, reverse camera, blind spot assist, and more. The remaining 600 vehicles will be eVito.

“Amazon is adding 1,800 electric delivery vehicles from Mercedes-Benz as part of our journey to build the most sustainable transportation fleet in the world, and we will be moving fast to get these vans on the road this year,” he added.

As part of Mercedes-Benz’s commitment as the latest signatory of The Climate Pledge, the company is doubling down on its commitment to ‘Ambition2039,’ a roadmap to CO2-neutral mobility.

By joining ‘The Climate Pledge’ we are building on our goal to consistently pursue emission-free mobility and sustainable vehicle production,” said Ola Kallenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG.

The company is evaluating ways to remove carbon from its entire value chain, from development to the supplier network, from its own production to the electrification of products and beyond, as well as to ensuring renewable energies for the use phase of electric vehicles.

With its goal to have a CO2-neutral fleet of new cars in less than 20 years, Mercedes-Benz said it “is making an important contribution to slowing climate change”.

By the end of this year, the vehicle portfolio will comprise five fully electric models and more than 20 plug-in hybrids.

As part of The Climate Pledge, Amazon is investing in renewable energy as a critical step toward addressing our carbon footprint globally and has pledged to run on 100 percent renewable energy by 2025.

SL extends debt moratorium for crisis-hit tourism sector

0

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) has decided to extend a debt moratorium for the country’s crisis-hit tourism sector by six months.

A debt moratorium on capital and interest for Sri Lanka’s tourism sector which was initiated in April 2019 in the wake of the Easter attacks and expected to expire on September 30, has been extended until March 31, 2021, Xinhua news agency quoted the CBSL as saying on Friday.

The CBSL requested licensed commercial banks and licensed specialized banks to provide moratoriums following representations made by the Ministry of Tourism and in light of the ongoing effects of the pandemic on tourism-related businesses.

Tourism industry stakeholders, including The Hotels Association of Sri Lanka (THASL) and Colombo City Hotels Association (CCHA), welcomed the moratorium extension, citing difficulties faced in the wake of the 2019 Easter attacks and the pandemic.

Sri Lanka’s international airports remain closed to foreign tourists, with zero arrivals recorded since May, as the government continues to keep a tight lid in order to eradicate the pandemic.a

UK unveils measures for mass rollout of Covid-19 vaccines

0

The UK government has unveiled a series of measures to allow the safe mass rollout of a Covid-19 vaccine in the near future, the Department of Health and Social Care announced.

According to the announcement on Friday, the measures include reinforced safeguards to support the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency to grant temporary authorization for the use of a new vaccine, provided it meets the highest safety and quality standards, reports Xinhua news agency.

It also includes expanding the trained workforce who can administer Covid-19 and flu vaccines.

“We are making progress in developing Covid-19 vaccines which we hope will be important in saving lives, protecting healthcare workers and returning to normal in future,” said Professor Jonathan Van-Tam, deputy chief medical officer for England.

He also emphasized that it was important to make the vaccines available to patients as quickly as possible but only once strict safety standards have been met.

The measures could come into force by October, ahead of the winter season, the announcement said.

Canadian economy sees record drop in Q2

0

Canada’s gross domestic product (GDP) fell by a record 11.5 percent in the second quarter this year, following a 2.1 percent decline in the first quarter due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a report on Friday, Statistics Canada said that almost every single component of the economy was at its lowest point in the second quarter as the pandemic forced the country to carry out widespread shutdowns of non-essential businesses, border closures, and restrictions on travel and tourism, reports Xinhua news agency.

The second-quarter decline, the steepest since quarterly data were first recorded in 1961, reflected sharp decreases in household spending, business investment, and international trade.

Final domestic demand dropped 11.1 percent, continuing the 1.9 percent drop in the first quarter.

Expressed at an annualized rate, the real GDP plunged 38.7 percent in the second quarter.

The second quarter is largely expected to be the worst in 2020 for the Canadian economy before the country begins what is expected to be a long, bumpy road to recovery.

West Nile virus claims 3rd victim in Spain

0

Spain has reported a third victim of the West Nile virus, a mosquito-borne infection, officials said.

According to health authorities on Friday, the third victim, a 70-year-old man, died from the virus in Seville, reports Xinhua news agency.

The other two victims were an 85-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man from the small towns of La Puebla del Rio and Coria del Rio, in the Andalusian region situated next to the Guadalquivir river, which also passes through the center of Seville.

The health authorities also reported that the number of active cases of the virus dropped from 37 on Thursday to 33 on Friday, with the number of people receiving hospital treatment falling from 17 to 14 (of whom six remain in intensive care).

The virus is spread by mosquitoes, which are common in the area given the proximity to the river.

According to the World Health Organization, approximately 80 percent of people who are infected will not show any symptoms.

The current outbreak of the virus is the largest recorded in the region and has been attributed to an increase in the number of mosquitos following a wet spring, which created ideal breeding conditions.

Local authorities have carried out intensive fumigation programs in recent days to control the spread of the virus.

Khel Ratna awardees to receive 25L, 15L for Arjuna awardees

0

Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju on Saturday announced an enhancement in the prize money in four of the seven categories of the National Sports Awards.

Rijiju made this announcement on the occasion of the 115th birth anniversary of hockey legend Dhyan Chand, which is also celebrated as National Sports Day.

The prize money for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award has been increased to Rs 25 lakh from the previous amount of Rs 7.5 lakh; Arjuna Award has been enhanced to Rs 15 lakh from Rs 5 lakh; the Dhronacharya (Lifetime) awardees, who were earlier given Rs 5 lakh will now be given Rs 15 lakh as cash prize; while Dhronacharya (Regular) will be given Rs 10 lakh instead of Rs 5 lakh per awardee. Dhyanchand awardees will be given Rs 10 lakh instead of Rs 5 lakh.

Speaking about the decision, Rijiju said, “The prize money for the Sports Awards was last reviewed in 2008. These amounts should be reviewed once every 10 years at least. If professionals in every field have seen an enhancement in their earnings, why not our sportspersons?”

A total of 74 awards are being given in seven categories this year in a virtual ceremony because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The performance of our athletes at the international level has become better. When our players perform better, they have to be recognized and rewarded. If the government doesn’t recognize their achievements, it will discourage every budding sporting talent we have in India,” Rijiju said earlier in the day.

“So, compared to the previous years, the performances of the Indian athletes have gone up considerably and as a result, the number of award winners has also gone up,” he added.

The sports ministry had earlier announced Rani Rampal, Vinesh Phogat, Manika Batra, Rohit Sharma, and Mariyappan Thangavelu as five Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna winners and 27 other sportspersons for the Arjuna Award.

Masaba Gupta: Used to enjoy blind items until it became about me

Fashion designer Masaba Gupta says even after spending 11 years in the fashion industry, she is questioned about her parents and the events of 1988, but she has made her peace with it.

“I have to say that I used to really enjoy reading blind items until it became about me. I think that’s the nature of the human mind that the minute something happens to you, or you have an experience, you change your viewpoint about it, and you are kinder to people. You don’t speculate that much,” Masaba told IANS while talking about how she learned to live under public scrutiny, and the culture of blind items.

“I think I was born in controversy. I get questions about this, that, my parents etc. Till today, after being in fashion for 11 years, it eventually boils down to my parents, and what had happened back in 1988. I’ve made my peace with it,” added the designer, who was born to actress Neena Gupta after she had a brief relationship with former West Indies cricketer Vivian Richards in the 80s.

Masaba asserted that she prefers to live her life in a “very private bubble”.

“I only share things with people I have really known for a long time, and who I trust. When I step into the outside world, I’m actually a completely different person. I don’t even resonate with that person so much. But I think it is okay. You as a public person realize and understand that there is a certain part of your life (out) in the public, so it is alright. I think it’s good and it’s a bigger blessing than a curse,” she added.

The designer has now opened up parts of her life for a fictionalized series “Masaba Masaba”. In the Netflix show, Masaba and her mother Neena play their fictionalized versions. The show takes one inside the truth behind the picture-perfect smiles while exploring her divorce, her bond with her mother, fickle nature of showbiz, and the after-effects of blind items.

Asked what made her say yes to a show like this, Masaba said: “So, Ashwini Yardi wrote to me and said that ‘we would like to do a show that is inspired by your life and you will play yourself and your mom will play herself’.”

“I thought it was a reality show for the longest time. But later, she told me that it’s a scripted show where it would be part fiction and part reality. It was just great. It was a new format. Mum read the idea, and we were both onboard. I think it was just such a great new idea for us,” she added.

The show, also starring Neil Bhoopalam, Rytasha Rathore, Smaran Sahu, and Satyadeep Mishra, released on Netflix on August 28.

On National Sports Day, the government honors outstanding sportspersons by conferring them with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, Arjun Award and Dronacharya Award (for best coach) at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. However, this year, the ceremony will take place virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

A total of 74 sportspersons and coaches have been chosen for this year’s national sports awards that include cricketer Rohit Sharma, Indian hockey captain Rani Rampal and TT player Manika Batra.

Andhra’s Covid cases breach 4 lakh-mark

Andhra Pradesh on Friday recorded 10,526 new Covid-19 cases to cross the 4 lakh-mark while 81 fresh fatalities pushed the death toll to 3,714.

With over 10,000 cases for a third consecutive day, the state’s tally mounted to 4,03,616. Andhra Pradesh thus became the second state with the highest number of cases after Maharashtra, which has so far registered over 7.33 lakh cases.

Andhra Pradesh has overtaken Tamil Nadu as the second-worst affected state in terms of the number of COVID cases.

In the last three days, the state has added 31,977 cases.

Andhra Pradesh also has the fifth-highest death toll in the country. However, officials said that despite a large number of fatalities, the mortality rate was still low at 0.92 percent against the national average of 1.83 percent.

According to the media bulletin released by the state command control room, 10 fatalities were reported from Chittoor, nine from Kadapa and eight each from Nellore, Prakasam and West Godavari district.

Six people each succumbed each in East Godavari, Kurnool, and Visakhapatnam districts, five each in Anantapur, Krishna, and Srikakulam. Four people died in Guntur while Vizianagaram district reported one death.

Chittoor is the worst affected district in terms of fatalities with 379 deaths so far, followed by East Godavari (370), Kurnool (361) and Guntur (359).

In the last 24 hours, 1,178 cases were reported from the East Godavari district, pushing the district’s tally to 55,834, the highest in the state. As many as 1,151 cases were reported from Nellore and 986 from West Godavari.

Rijiju pays tribute to Dhyan Chand on National Sports Day

0

Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju on Saturday morning paid a floral tribute to the statue of Dhyan Chand on the occasion of the hockey legend’s 115th birth anniversary at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium in the national capital. This day is also commemorated as the National Sports Day every year.

Rijiju was joined by other dignitaries during the ceremony and he also took time to address a Khelo India e-pathshala at the stadium.

“Today is a very important day for all of us, especially the sporting fraternity. Major Dhyan Chand’s three consecutive gold medals for India and his exemplary skills and determination makes every Indian proud,” said Rijiju.

“On the occasion of this National Sports Day, the government confers the awards and I would like to congratulate all the award winners for the accolades and honors they have brought to India,” he added.

Asked why the number of sports awardees this year has increased significantly, with 74 awards being given in seven categories, the Sports Minister said, “The performance of our athletes at the international level has become better. When our players perform better, they have to be recognized and rewarded. If the government doesn’t recognize their achievements, it will discourage every budding sporting talent we have in India.”

“So, compared to the previous years, the performances of the Indian athletes have gone up considerably and as a result, the number of award winners has also gone up.”

“Secondly, there should be a proper process in which you make a choice. For the sports awards, the committee was headed by a Supreme Court judge and all the renowned people from the field of sports. When they take a call there is intense deliberation, discussion and there are set guidelines on the basis of which they have used their judgment.

“There might be disappointments on certain occasions but sports awards are not for one year. It is the cumulative performance of four years. So if any sportsperson is left out because of other contenders in the same category, it is rewarded next year.

“The minister doesn’t decide the awards, the minister only gives the consent on behalf of the government but it is the technical committee which decides,” he added.

Following the proceedings at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium, Rijiju headed over to the Vigyan Bhavan where the virtual National Sports Awards will be conducted for athletes who are collecting their awards from the national capital. They are connected online with the President Ram Nath Kovind at the Rashtrapati Bhawan.

The Sports Minister also paid his commiserations to late athletics coach Purushotham Rai, who passed away last night after a massive heart attack. The Bengaluru based coach was due to get the Dronacharya Award during Saturday’s virtual ceremony in person from Bengaluru.

Facebook to link your account with paid news subscription

0

Facebook is testing a new feature that will link your account with the news subscription you have paid for so that you can read paywalled articles without hitting the paywall or required to log in again.

The aim is to help news publishers create a better experience for paying subscribers on the social networking platform, reports TechCrunch.

According to the company, subscribers who linked their accounts made an average of 111 percent more article clicks compared to those who weren’t part of the test group.

Those subscribers increased their rate of following a publisher from 34 percent to 97 percent.

When subscribers link their accounts with news publishers, it will show them more content.

Some newspapers like the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Athletic, and the Winnipeg Free Press in the US are testing the feature.

Calling itself a Fifth Estate, Facebook launched its revamped News tab in the US in June that includes a dedicated local news section among other topics, including breaking news alerts.

Facebook News will soon arrive in the UK, Germany, France, India, and Brazil within the next six months to a year, and will pay news publishers to ensure their content is available in the new product.

Facebook has found that over 95 percent of the traffic Facebook News delivers to publishers “is incremental to the traffic they already get from News Feed”.

Before a dedicated News tab, Facebook had “Instant Articles” that restricted advertising, subscriptions, and the recirculation modules publishers relied on, leading many to abandon the feature.

In 2018, the company decided to prioritize friends and family posts in its News Feed, sidelining news outlets.

Apple’s ‘stranglehold’ on App Store blocks innovation: Zuckerberg

0

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has slammed Apple for its App Store policy, saying it blocks innovation and allows the tech giant to “charge monopoly rents”.

Buzzfeed first reported that Zuckerberg told 50,000 employees in a webcast that Apple has a “unique stranglehold as a gatekeeper on what gets on phones.”

The Facebook CEO added that App Store “blocks innovation, blocks competition” and “allows Apple to charge monopoly rents.”

“Now more than ever, we should have the option to help people understand where the money they intend for small businesses actually goes,” a Facebook spokesperson told FOX Business on Friday.

“Unfortunately Apple rejected our transparency notice around their 30% tax but we are still working to make that information available inside the app experience”.

Facebook Gaming app was rejected by Apple for several months before the social network tweaked it for release on iOS devices.

Apple prevented the social network from launching its gaming app on iPhones and other devices as it was a direct threat to the Livestream gaming service Apple Arcade.

According to Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg, the company managed to launch an iOS version of its gaming app after it was “forced to make a concession to bring it to the App Store”, CNBC reported earlier this month.

“Unfortunately, we had to remove gameplay functionality entirely in order to get Apple’s approval on the standalone Facebook Gaming app — meaning iOS users have an inferior experience to those using Android,” said Sandberg.

“We’re staying focused on building communities for the more than 380 million people who play games on Facebook every month — whether Apple allows it in a standalone app or not,” she said in a statement.

Google’s Stadia and Nvidia’s GeForce also faced trouble with launching iOS versions of their apps due to the App Store’s guidelines.

Microsoft has accused Apple of treating gaming apps unfairly while allowing other media services to existing on the platform even when they include interactive content.

“Apple stands alone as the only general-purpose platform to deny consumers from cloud gaming and game subscription services like Xbox Game Pass,” a Microsoft spokesperson told The Verge recently.

Apple has said such cloud gaming services are in violation of App Store guidelines.

Facebook Gaming saw a massive 238 percent growth in hours watched in the month of April (year-over-year) when people stayed home owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, followed by the live game streaming platform Twitch that saw 101 percent growth.

Microsoft is all set to launch its much-anticipated game streaming service xCloud on September 15 for Android users in 22 countries.

I enjoy Dhawan’s batting, he’s a thorough professional: Miller

0

Swashbuckling South African batsman David Miller has revealed his admiration for Shikhar Dhawan, saying the Indian opener is very professional in his outlook and is consistent as well.

In an exclusive interview with IANS, the 31-year-old left-hander shared his views on his new IPL team – Rajasthan Royals, COVID-19 tests and also spoke about the famous six that made a policeman blind in one eye in 2015.

Miller praised Dhawan’s aggressive approach to the game. “There are many cricketers that I admire. Growing up my role models were Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist. Both of them were left-handers and always took an aggressive and positive route. Someone I’ve really enjoyed seeing batting in the IPL has been Shikhar Dhawan,” Miller said.

“I just love how he goes about his game. I’ve got to know him as a person as well. He is extremely relaxed about his outlook on his game and is very professional. But at the same time, he understands that cricket is cricket and sometimes things turn out differently. But, yeah, just the way he goes about his business and is a really consistent performer. So, I really enjoy watching him bat.”

Miller, who will feature for Rajasthan Royals in the upcoming Indian Premier League in the UAE starting September 19, revealed he also picked former national team-mate AB de Villiers’s brain to understand his mindset towards the game.

“With AB, I’ve always had lots of discussions and I have always told him that he’s very lucky that I’m not a bowler because otherwise, he wouldn’t be scoring so many runs. Jokes aside, I’ve been talking with AB about the mindset he goes in with and stuff like that,” he said. “So, I’ve been really fortunate to have him around to chat with, regarding certain things to have had the relationship that I have with him playing for the Proteas for many years now.”

Speaking of his maiden stint with Rajasthan Royals, the explosive batsman hinted that it won’t be a trouble for him to adjust in the team’s environment as he already knows many of their players.

“I’ve known some of the guys at the Royals having played with and against some of them. I wouldn’t say that I know them too well but, obviously, I’ve known them as competitors. Tom Curran is someone I know pretty well and have got on really well with him in the past,” he said.

“Andrew Tye I played with for the Kings XI Punjab. Oshane Thomas as well…I’ve played with him in Jamaica. I’ve also played with Ankit Rajpoot and Manan Vohra for the Kings XI. So, I’ve actually played with quite a few of the guys but I am really looking forward to meeting with the guys with whom I haven’t played much and the whole of the team,” he said.

Asked about his struggle, like COVID-19 testing he faced while traveling to Dubai, Miller said he has got used to it now. “I’ve been tested around six or seven times since the whole thing started. I’ve been hearing that moving forward we’re going to be having a test every four to five days so there’ going to be some tests coming down our noses. It’s a very uncomfortable feeling but it’s obviously important, we need to do it and you do get used to these things with time,” he said.

During the 2015 IPL season, a ball that Miller hit for a six in Kolkata hit a policeman’s left eye and he lost his eyesight. That incident is still fresh in the South African’s mind. “It was quite a big issue, to be honest with you. It was extremely serious and I think I blinded the policeman and it was quite a situation that we had. I still remember the shot and how it went through the air and everything unraveled in a couple of days actually,” he said.

“It came out in the press and the newspapers and was quite tough to deal with, to be completely honest with you. Fortunately, that is not going to be happening this year without the crowds,” he laughed, referring to the likely empty stands during the IPL in the UAE. “This will be my first time playing in front of no crowds. But back in South Africa, we’re used to playing four-day games in front of no crowds; there’s maybe just a man and his dog there to watch. T20 and IPL, though, is going to be very different with no crowds, to be honest,” he concluded.
