Railways cancels tender for manufacturing 44 Vande Bharat Express rakes (Ld)

0

Indian Railways on Friday canceled the tender for the manufacturing of 44 rakes of Train 18, which has been re-christened as Vande Bharat Express, and said a fresh tender will be floated within a week’s time, focusing on Make in India as a Chinese Joint Venture also applied as a foreign bidder.

The Ministry of Railways in a statement said: “Tender for manufacturing of 44 sets of semi high-speed train set (Vande Bharat) has been canceled.”

“A fresh tender will be floated within a week as per revised public procurement (Preference to Make in India) order,” it added.

The decision came after the Chinese joint venture company CRRC Pioneer Electric (India) Private Limited emerged as the only foreign bidder for the global tender floated for manufacturing 44 rakes of Vande Bharat trains.

The Chennai-based ICF has invited bids for procurement of electric traction kits for Train 18, the country’s first self-propelled train without locomotives.

Train 18 was manufactured by ICF, which is owned by the Indian Railways, with over 80 percent indigenous materials and was rolled out in October 2018 amidst much fanfare.

The train was later re-christened as Vande Bharat express and was introduced between New Delhi and Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency, in February last year. In October last year, the second Vande Bharat Express train was introduced between New Delhi and Katra.

In November 2019, the railway board gave a go-ahead to ICF to resume manufacturing of the semi high-speed trains. Subsequently, the ICF had called for bids for procuring electric traction kits for 44 train sets. Each set of trains has got 16 coaches.

In December last year, Indian Railways had planned to complete the production of 44 more new rakes on India’s 75th Independence day. All the coaches of Vande Bharat Express have a stainless steel car body equipped with automatic doors with sliding footsteps, on-board computers for train control, and remote monitoring. The coaches also have a GPS-based audio-visual passenger information system, onboard hotspot WiFi and comfortable seating arrangements.

Kerala seeks CBI probe into death of man found in well

0

After 24 days of protests by friends and family of a man, who was found dead inside a well while he was in the custody of the Kerala Forest Department, the Pinarayi Vijayan government on Friday sought a CBI probe into the matter.

The move by the Vijayan government into the Pathanamthitta incident came on the day when the Kerala High Court was all set to hear the plea of Sheba, the deceased’s wife, seeking the CBI probe.

State Forest Minister K.Raju said the decision has been made and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan would make the official request seeking the central agency’s probe.

Forty-year-old Mathai, was the sole breadwinner of his extended family. He was taken into custody by the forest officials on July 28 from his house for allegedly damaging the Forest Department’s CCTV camera kept for surveillance in the forest area.

After a few hours, Mathai was found dead in the well of his farmhouse, located 10km from his home.

Sheba, his wife, and her friends and family have been protesting ever since demanding justice for Mathai. They vowed not to conduct the funeral till the wrongdoers of the Forest Department were arrested. The body has since been kept in a mortuary.

Hearing the news of the CBI probe, Sheba said even though the Crime Branch has been probing the case, they still await justice.

“Till this moment no arrests have been made. Our position is very clear, the funeral will not be conducted, till arrests are made. The Forest officials are being protected and it’s now been so many days and yet no arrests have been made. Let the CBI conduct the probe and let them make the arrest,” said Sheba.

Canada unveils new financial assistance plan for economic recovery

0

The Canadian government has announced a new financial assistance plan for the recovery of the country’s coronavirus-hit economy.

At a news conference in Ottawa on Thursday, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, along with Employment Minister Carla Qualtrough, announced the new plan for the next phase of economic recovery when Canada continues to face the worst economic downturn in history, reports Xinhua news agency.

The new plan includes the extended Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) and the creation of three new benefit programs.

The CERB will be extended by another four weeks to September, and a new benefit that pays C$400 ($303) for up to 26 weeks will replace it for those ineligible for employment insurance.

Anyone eligible for employment insurance will get the same minimum for at least 26 weeks and will need to have worked 120 hours to qualify, well below current employment insurance requirements, since many Canadians have been unable to work to the pandemic.

The second new benefit is a caregiving benefit of C$500 a week. This is meant to help anyone who has to stay home because school or daycare is closed.

The third new benefit will provide C$500 for up to two weeks for those who don’t have paid sick leave and become sick or must self-isolate due to reasons linked to COVID-19.

The CERB, which has already paid out more than C$69 billion to more than 8.6 million recipients, will be in place until September 27.

The CERB pays people C$2,000 a month.

Applications for the new benefits are scheduled to open in October.

However, the new benefits require parliamentary approval.

The Canadian Parliament is currently suspended until September when the House of Commons will begin a new session.

This drug improves survival in sickest Covid-19 patients: Study

0

A drug normally used in rheumatoid arthritis and cancer treatments — tocilizumab — improves hospital survival in critically ill Covid-19 patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU), say, researchers.

The study, published in the journal The Lancet Rheumatology, included 630 patients who were admitted to the ICUs of 13 Hackensack Meridian Health hospitals in New Jersey.

Among other treatments, tocilizumab was considered for off-label usage for the patients whose respiratory symptoms were declining; many of whom were requiring mechanical ventilator support.

In the observational study, 210 patients received tocilizumab, and the other 420 did not.

“Our work in treating this terrible virus, and learning more about it each day, continues to benefit thousands of patients as the pandemic continues,” said Robert C Garrett, CEO of the Hackensack Meridian Health in the US.

Covid-19 has three phases: the early or viral phase (with fast viral replication), the pulmonary phase (marked by inflammation and pneumonia as the body tries to fight the virus in the lungs) and the inflammatory phase (in which excessive inflammation reaches and affects many organs and patients are often in the ICU).

As part of both the pulmonary and inflammatory phases, the immune system is “supercharged” and secretes in the blood numerous cytokines, particularly interleukin (IL)-6, which induces further inflammation.

Tocilizumab is a monoclonal antibody, which binds and blocks the interleukin (IL)-6 receptor and helps damper the inflammatory response.

The activity of tocilizumab was first shown in chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy, where a similar phenomenon of overactive and growing T cells induce a “cytokine storm.”

This provided a rationale to try tocilizumab in Covid-19 patients.

The findings showed a statistically significant decrease in hospital-related deaths among the patients who received the tocilizumab.

A roughly 36 percent decrease in hospital-related mortality among the ICU patients who received the drug, as compared with patients in the ICU who didn’t receive it.

Importantly, it appeared that higher levels of a blood test marker of inflammation, C-reactive protein, could predict which ICU patients might benefit most from the tocilizumab therapy, potentially allowing doctors to tailor therapy to those most in need.

“These real-time findings have helped to point us the way forward,” the study authors wrote.

Earlier this month, another study published in the International Journal of Infectious Diseases, found that t patients experiencing severe Covid-19 symptoms had improved outcomes when administered an Interleukin-6 (IL6ri) inhibitor, sarilumab or tocilizumab.

Rise in US weekly jobless claims cast shadow on labour market recovery

0

The number of initial jobless claims in the US topped the 1 million mark last week, casting a shadow on the recovery of the labor market ravaged by the Covid-19 crisis.

In the week ending August 15, the number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits increased by 135,000 to reach 1.1 million, Xinhua news agency quoted the Labour Department as saying in a report on Thursday.

Initial jobless claims spiked by 3 million to reach a record 3.3 million in the week ending March 21 and then doubled to reach a record 6.87 million in the week ending March 28.

After that, the number had been declining for 15 weeks consecutively, though they were still at historically high levels before the trend was reversed in the week ending July 18 amid a resurgence in coronavirus cases.

The number then fell to 963,000 in the week ending August 8, the first time it has dipped below 1 million since mid-March, but the trend was reversed again last week, another setback for the struggling job market.

With the latest numbers, a staggering 57 million initial jobless claims have been filed over the past 22 weeks, indicating a mounting economic fallout related to the pandemic.

An extra $600 in weekly unemployment benefits expired at the end of July, but Democratic lawmakers and President Donald Trump’s administration remain deadlocked over the next Covid-19 relief package, with both sides blaming each other for making little progress.

As negotiations stall, President Trump signed a series of executive orders to extend certain Covid-19 economic relief, but analysts believe that they are unlikely to provide a meaningful boost to the overall economy.

One of the actions will extend extra unemployment benefits through the end of the year at a reduced level of $400 per week, instead of the $600 approved by Congress in late March.

The new order also demands states cover 25 percent of the $400 weekly benefits, but only a handful of states have approved the funding.

But amid the grim milestones, the number of people continuing to collect state unemployment benefits declined by 636,000 to 14.8 million in the week ending August 8.

The total number of people claiming benefits in all programs for the week ending August 1 also declined 197,601 to 28 million.

Earlier data showed that US employers added 1.8 million jobs in July, and the unemployment rate dropped to 10.2 percent amid reopening efforts.

Indian challenge ends at ATP Challenger Prague Open

0

India’s challenge at the ongoing ATP Challenger Prague Open came to an end after all the three players — Sumit Nagal, Divij Sharan, and N Sriram Balaji — suffered defeats in their respective singles and doubles matches.

Top-seeded Sharan and Robin Haase lost their quarterfinal clash 3-6, 6-7(8) to Jiri Lehecka and Tomas MacHac on Thursday, thus bowing out of the competition.

In another match, Balaji and his partner Kimmer Coppejans also suffered a straight-sets defeat in their last-8 clash as they went down 4-6, 3-6 to Steven Diez and Blaz Rola.

Earlier in the day, Nagal suffered a 6-2, 0-6, 1-6 defeat to world no. 17 Stan Wawrinka to bow out of the singles event.

Nagel, who faced Wawrinka’s illustrious fellow countryman Roger Federer at the 2019 US Open and took a set off him as well, had the upper hand in the first set but could hardly compete in the second and third.

“It was a tough start again,” said Wawrinka after the match as per the ATP Tour website. “I was not feeling the ball very well and it was flying a lot on me. Again, it’s good to win another match, and to do it in three sets gives me more time on the court. It’s all positive.”

Nagal, who then featured in the doubles quarterfinal with his partner Belarusian Ilya Ivashka, lost 2-6, 4-6 to Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Arthur Rinderknecht.

Versatile singer SP Balasubramanyam continues to battle Covid

Famed playback singer and Padma awardee S.P. Balasubrahmanyam, or popularly SPB, who has recorded over 40,000 songs in 16 languages over a period of five decades continues to battle Covid-19 at a private hospital here.

The popular singer who was admitted to MGM Healthcare with mild Coronavirus infection some days back is now on ventilator and ECMO support and his condition is critical.

On August 5, in a Facebook post, the 74-year-old SPB said that he was suffering from a very mild attack of the Coronavirus and had got himself hospitalized to take rest.

He had said that though the doctors had advised him to stay at home and take rest, he decided to be in a hospital, as at home his family members would get concerned. He hoped to get discharged from the hospital in two days.

However, soon his condition deteriorated.

SPB, who has done playback for Bollywood star Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor besides legends like MGR and Rajinikanth among many others, while pursuing his engineering course, participated in singing competitions and won prizes.

“At one such competition, popular playback singer S. Janaki while giving the prize sowed the seed of singing in movies in me by saying that I can shine in the cine world. She encouraged me saying that she too was not a trained singer,” SPB had reminisced at a media meet.

Later he started visiting music directors seeking an opportunity to become a movie playback singer.

A humble person, SPB had earlier said that if a person achieves something significant in a field, then it is due to the nudgings and help rendered by several others; and in his case, there were a couple of people.

According to him, but for his friend and roommate Murali who had compelled him to reach the recording studio in 1966 December, he wouldn’t have become a movie singer.

SPB recorded his first song composed by music director and his mentor S.P. Kodandapani for the Telugu movie Sri Sri Sri Maryada Ramanna.

Nearly a week later after his debut, he recorded his first Kannada song for the movie “Nakkare Ade Swarga” in 1967.

Soon he became busy with Telugu movie songs.

Looking back, SPB in an interview said that his evolution as a playback singer was largely due to Telugu music director Sathyam.

It was the Telugu movie “Sankarabharanam” that made the nation realize the potential of SPB. The movie directed by K. Viswanath and the music scored by K.V. Mahadevan turned out to be a big hit. SPB got his first National Film Award for Best Male Playback singer.

Though his first Tamil movie song was ‘Athaanodu Ippadi Irundhu Eththanai Naalaachu’ along with L.R. Eswari and music scored by another legend M.S.Viswanathan (MSV), the song and the movie “Hotel Ramba” did not come out. As the movie was stopped midway, no music company had bought the rights and made the gramophone recording.

Later SPB sang for actor Gemini Ganesan (Iyarkai Ennum Ilaya Kanni), for M.G. Ramachandran or MGR (Aayiram Nilavae Vaa) and went on to the Malayalam movie industry.

At a media meet SPB had said he was grateful to MGR for postponing the shooting for `Aayiram Nilavae Vaa’ by a month so that the song was ready.

The singer said he was then down with a fever. Given his stature, MGR could have recorded the song with a different singer and gone ahead with the shooting.

“I had asked MGR about that later. He said after the audition, I would have told my friends that I will be singing for MGR. And if I was replaced the talk would be that MGR didn’t like my voice and so he chose some other singer. That would have been a big setback for my Tamil movie career, which he (MGR) didna¿t want to happen,” SPB recalled the incident.

After that, there was no looking back for him. In the Tamil movie world, he has sung for MGR, Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan, Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, and others.

At one point he was so prolific that he recorded over 15 songs in a day.

The mid-1970s saw the entry of music director Illaiyaraaja who later became a major force in the Tamil movie industry. The two-SPB and Ilaiyaraaja-had known each other even before the latter became a music director.

The 1980s saw the trio — Illaiyaraaja, SPB, and S. Janaki- recording a large number of songs and most of them became great hits.

It is a different matter that Illaiyaraaja and SPB had some differences of opinion on the royalty issue. Citing law Illaiyaraaja had demanded that SPB pay him a royalty for singing his songs on-stage performances. The two patched up soon.

It was in 1981that SPB made his debut in the Hindi movie world singing for Kamal Haasan in Ek Duuje Ke Liye and went on to sing in movies like Maine Pyar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, and others.

“It was K.Balachander, Director, Ek Duuje Ke Liye who had insisted that I should sing for Kamal Haasan through the music composers Laxmikant-Pyarelal were bit reluctant to try me out,” SPB reminisced.

It is a different matter SPB got a National Award for one of the songs in that movie.

During the 1990s the list of music directors he worked with increased like Deva, S.A.Rajkumar, Vidyasagar, and A.R. Rahman in the hit movie Roja.

Apart from singing, SPB has also dubbed for several leading artists in Tamil and Telugu movies. For Kamal Haasan he was the default voice in Telugu movies. He had dubbed for Ben Kingsley in the Telugu dubbing of English movie Gandhi.

As an actor too, SPB made a mark in movies like “Kadhalan”, “Keladi Kanmani”, “Thiruda Thiruda” and others.

Honored with Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awards in 2001 and 2011 respectively, SPB has won six National Film Awards for the best male playback singer and several other state awards.

His fans are praying for SPB to get well soon and start singing.

Shia cleric objects to ban on Muharram rituals

0

Shia cleric Maulana Kalbe Jawwad has taken a strong exception to the blanket ban on all Muharram rituals by the Lucknow Police Commissionerate.

The Maulana, who is the ‘mutawalli’ (caretaker) of Imambara Ghufranmaab in the old city has called the guidelines issued specifically for Muharram ‘unconstitutional and illegal’.

Jawwad has said that he will be holding the ‘majlis’ (sermons) at the Imambara, following Covid-19 protocols, and if the administration wanted, it could arrest him.

The cleric has submitted a written statement to the police commissioner, saying that their order was not just misleading but was also creating unrest in the community.

“It is against the guidelines issued by the WHO, Central, and state governments on Covid-19. This new guideline should be repealed immediately since Covid-19 protocols are already in place. At the ‘majlis’ from Friday, the number of people will be limited to 50 along with thermal scanning, sanitizations, social distancing, and masks,” Jawwad said.

Jawwad also said that permission to hold majlis inside Imambaras with COVID norms has been given in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and in Kashmir.

Meanwhile, as ‘taziya’ makers set up shop for Muharram which begins on Friday, several clerics including Maulana Kalbe Jawwad and All India Shia Personal Law Board general secretary Maulana Yasoob Abbas have alleged that the police are threatening taziya makers, asking them not to make and sell the Tamiya.

The taziya is a replica of the tomb of Husain, the martyred grandson of Muhammad, that is carried in processions during Muharram.

These paper taziyas are traditionally kept at homes during Muharram as a replica of Imam Husain’s mausoleum.

K’taka to estimate Covid prevalence, immunity in population

0

The Karnataka government will conduct a survey across the state to estimate the prevalence of Coronavirus and the proportion of the population which has developed immunity against the virus, an official said on Friday.

“Karnataka will be conducting a survey across all districts to estimate the prevalence of COVID across the state and the proportion of persons who have developed immunity,” said a health official.

Data from the survey is expected to guide the state government to make interventions for Coronavirus pandemic management. People above 18 in the 30 districts of the state as well as the eight zones of Bengaluru will be part of the survey.

In preparation for this survey, Health Commissioner Pankaj Kumar Pandey inaugurated a training program on Thursday for district surveillance officers, district tuberculosis officers, epidemiologists, and personnel from the integrated counseling and testing centers under NACO.

To execute the survey, the state population has been divided into low risk, moderate risk, and high-risk categories. Samples in the low-risk population will come from pregnant women at the antenatal care (ANC) clinics and people attending the outpatient department in hospitals and attendees of children and patients.

In the moderate-risk population category, bus conductors, vegetable vendors, healthcare workers, individuals in containment zones, and also individuals in meeting areas such as markets, malls, bus stops, and railway stations will be covered.

Likewise, elderly people and persons with comorbidities will come under the high-risk category. “Data for the survey will be collected using an app to register patients, update sample collection status and lab results,” the official added. Karnataka’s COVID tally crossed 2.5 lakh-mark on Thursday to reach 2,56,975 cases with 7,385 new cases.

Real story behind UP bus hijack not EMI non-payment

0

The real story behind the bus hijack in Uttar Pradesh’s Agra has now taken a new turn with the arrest of the main accused Pradeep Gupta. The bus was hijacked on Wednesday and Gupta arrested a day later.

The police intercepted the accused Pradeep Gupta in the Fatehabad area of Agra after a brief encounter in which he suffered a bullet injury in his leg.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Agra, Babloo Kumar, money dispute and not delay in the EMI payment, was the reason for the hijacking of the bus which was owned by Pawan Arora from Gwalior.

It is said that Pradeep Gupta was involved in a monetary dispute with Ashok Arora, the father of Pawan Arora.

Ashok Arora died due to Covid-19 on Tuesday and the hijacking was planned by the accused Pradeep Gupta to realize the outstanding money Arora owed him.

The government spokesperson, on Wednesday, had said that the Shri Ram Finance Company was responsible for taking away the bus with 34 passengers due to the non-payment of loan installments.

A district official admitted on Friday that the incident had ‘led to panic and some wrong information was given out’.

Meanwhile, the Shri Ram Finance Company issued a statement saying that the vehicle is not “repossessed by us nor any of our representatives. The company has no relevance to this incident. The loan done against this vehicle from our Gwalior branch has already been settled in the year 2018. We have already met today morning and informed SHO, Hari Parwat, and SP city, Agra pertaining to this matter.”

The Agra SSP said that Pradeep Gupta was identified by the CCTV footage at the toll plaza on Wednesday as he led the hijacking of the bus.

The family members of Ashok Arora identified Pradeep Gupta from the CCTV footage at a toll plaza. He was in the SUV car used by the alleged hijackers.
