Telangana Industries Minister K. T. Rama Rao on Wednesday said that social media cannot turn into an instrument for antisocial behavior.

The minister took to Twitter to share his thoughts after violence over a social media post rocked parts of Bengaluru overnight.

“Goes to show you how dangerous spreading fake news in social media can be,” tweeted Rama Rao, who is the son of Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao.

Rama Rao, who is also the president of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), requested all social media users to be responsible. He urged them not to indulge in propaganda and stop spreading fake news.

A Facebook message posted allegedly by a relative of a Congress MLA triggered violent protests in Bengaluru on Tuesday night.

Three people lost their lives in the riots and police firing, and 60 police personnel were injured in the violent incidents of stone-pelting and attacks by rioters.

City police have arrested the person accused of posting a derogatory message which triggered riots in Bengaluru east last night, an official said on Wednesday.

“With regard to the incidents in D.J. Halli, accused Naveen was arrested for posting derogatory posts,” said city Police Commissioner Kamal Pant.

Naveen is said to be the relative of Congress MLA Akanda Srinivas Murthy.

Following his social media post, irate mobs resorted to rioting and arson in D.J. Halli, K.G. Halli, Pulikeshinagar, and Kaval Byresandra.

Pant said 110 accused persons involved in the rioting have been arrested.

“Total of 110 persons accused arrested for arson, stone-pelting, and assault on the police. Appeal to all to cooperate with the police to maintain peace,” said the police commissioner.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister B. S. Yediyurappa said last night’s mischief leads to rioting and assault on Murthy’s home and the D.J. Halli police station.

He directed the officials to take action against the perpetrators.

“The attack on journalists, police, and the public in the riot last night was unpredictable. The government will not tolerate such provocations and rumors,” said Yediyurappa in Kannada.

He said strict action against the perpetrators was certain and appealed to the people to act with restraint.

Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Rajasthan Royals on Wednesday announced that their fielding coach Dishant Yagnik has tested positive for coronavirus.

The test was undertaken keeping in mind that the team members need to assemble in Mumbai next week for their flight to the UAE where the 13th IPL edition is set to be played from September 19 till November 10.

Yagnik is currently in his hometown Udaipur and has been advised to get admitted to hospital for his 14-day quarantine, informed the franchise.

“Post 14 days, Dishant will be undergoing two tests as per the protocols of BCCI. On return of two negative reports, he will be allowed to join the team after self-isolating for 6 days and receive 3 further negative tests upon his arrival in the UAE,” said Royals in a statement.

TikTok monitored device data in violation of Google policies: Report

0

TikTok secretly collected device data for months via its Android app using a technique that Google prohibits developers from using without consent of users, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Although the practice came to an end in November, the finding could add to the woes of the short video-sharing platform which is facing the threat of a ban in the US over its data protection practices.

TikTok’s Android app tracked MAC (media access control) addresses — unique hardware identifiers for networked devices — for at least 15 months over 2018-19, according to the WSJ report on Tuesday.

TikTok managed to hide the tactic through an “unusual added layer of encryption”, according to the report.

The short video-sharing platform owned by Chinese unicorn ByteDance reportedly took advantage of a security hole to collect the data.

It is not known if iOS users also fell prey to such tactics which were banned several years ago by both Google and Apple.

When the Journal reached for a reaction, TikTok said that MAC addresses are not collected by the current version of the app.

While it is not clear why TikTok used the tactic to collect device data, it could be linked with its advertising goals.

While Google did not comment on the loophole, it said that it was investigating the finding.

The news of TikTok collecting MAC addresses of Android users comes after iOS 14 revealed that the app was accessing iPhone clipboards more than necessary, Android Authority reported.

The finding comes in the same month the US President issued an executive order, prohibiting transactions by any entity in the country with its Chinese owner within 45 days.

TikTok was among the 59 apps that India banned in June.

HI has utilised this period really well to upskill umpires, says Shaikh

0

With domestic events put on a hold due to the ongoing pandemic, Hockey India has ensured this period is not lost on technical officials and umpires in the country.

Since the nation-wide lockdown began in March-April, the national governing body for hockey has conducted regular online courses for technical officials and umpires in the country. They have also encouraged many of them to attend the recent online courses conducted by the Asian Hockey Federation which was aimed at providing technical expertise on various aspects of officiating and managing international matches.

This constant attempt to keep the umpires updated with workshops, online courses, materials, videos, and so on has helped several umpires upskill their knowledge, feel experienced international hockey umpire, Javed Shaikh.

“Back when I began umpiring in the year 1999-2000, things were very different. We had to seek guidance from senior umpires at our own interest and there were never any courses or seminars as such. The lack of encouragement and knowledge base to learn often kept people from pursuing hockey officiating,” expressed Shaikh, who has umpired at major events such as Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, 2014 Men’s World Cup in Hague as well as the 2018 Men’s World Cup in Bhubaneswar.

Apart from these continued online workshops, Hockey India has also formed WhatsApp groups with one experienced international umpire in each group consisting 15 upcoming officials to engage in healthy debate and discussions on different challenges that arise while officiating.

“These groups are constantly active where we share ready material with videos to provide clarity on various situations in matches. From Maharashtra alone, we had about 70 young officials who were actively taking part in these discussions on the group.

“I feel by using technology to guide young officials, umpires and technical officials, Hockey India has rekindled interest among many youngsters, both men, and women, especially below 25 to take up officiating,” added Shaikh who is appointed as an umpire for the forthcoming Tokyo Olympics Games by FIH.

While there were hardly 3-4 international umpires available in India to officiate matches in prestigious international tournaments back in the 90s, today Hockey India’s efforts have resulted in over 14-15 international umpires being graded by FIH and often called-up for international assignments.

“Even a decade ago, taking up umpiring was always a ‘second option’ for many. It was mostly ex-players, around 35-38 years, whose careers would have ended playing for their employers that often took umpiring to stay relevant in the sport. But these days, with the kind of encouragement and opportunities being provided by the federation, we have many who are 25 years and younger who take up umpiring. This really makes me feel proud,” Shaikh said.

Looking back at his career in umpiring that has spanned over two decades, Shaikh said it has been the most satisfying experience. “Umpiring has helped me in a big way to improve my own personality.”

“To be able to stand on the field with 10,000 to 15,000 spectators, managing 22 top players was something unimaginable for a shy, reserved type of person like me but umpiring has changed my life and instilled tremendous self-confidence.

“Representing the country in top tournaments like the World Cup and Olympics too has been a huge honor and I hope many more youngsters grab the opportunities provided today to make a path for themselves in officiating,” he added.

Huawei patents smartphone with all screen fingerprint unlock tech

0

Chinese smartphone maker Huawei has reportedly filed a patent for smartphones with all-screen fingerprint unlock technology.

In addition, the firm disclosed that the new fullscreen fingerprint technology will allow the users to respond to text messages without the need to unlock the phone.

The users will still have the option to “activate sensors in a chosen area on the screen while deactivating the rest on the screen space.”

The company confirmed it has filed a patent for the new technology in six markets including China, Europe, the US, Japan, Korea as well as India and is awaiting approval, reports Android Authority.

In the patent, the company has outlined a few potential applications for the technology, such as fingerprint verification for individual applications, through their icons.

Huawei recently filed a patent for smartphones with an under-display selfie camera.

The Chinese tech giant filed two patents back in 2019 that has finally been published by the CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Office).

The patents also revealed that the phone will not have volume buttons, just like the Mate 30 Pro. Users will have to use a virtual slider to control the volume.

The front of the devices is shown to be bezel-less and with no notches of any kind to hold a selfie camera, while there is no visible mechanism for a pop-up camera.

Kohli & Anushka’s ‘take a break’ session leaves fans in splits

0

India skipper Virat Kohli and his actress wife Anushka Sharma on Wednesday shared a video on their social media handles in which the duo got involved in a hilarious ‘#TakeABreak’ session.

Kohli’s Instagram post read: “#TakeABreak Find out who knows who better in this fun and interactive #TakeABreak session with us. Hope you guys enjoy it and figure out who the winner is because I couldn’t.”

Anushka started off by asking Kohli things about Bollywood and then Kohli asked Anushka questions regarding cricket.

Anushka’s first question was: “What was the name of the first Hindi feature film?” To this, Kohli hilariously answered: “Mera Aangan”. The duo burst out laughing and then Anushka let him know the right answer which was: “Raja Harishchandra”.

Anushka then asked: “Name two movies based on cricket.” Kohli was having none of it this time and straightaway answered: “Patiala House and Lagaan”.

It was Kohli’s turn to ask questions now and he started with: “Name three basic rules of cricket.”

To this, Anushka replied: “Don’t get out” which prompted Kohli to say: “That’s not a rule, it’s a wish.”

Anushka then started giving answers seriously and she said: “Only two fielders are allowed outside the circle in the powerplay. You cannot bowl from outside the crease. The third one is that when you hit the ball over the boundary it’s a six and if it touches the ground it’s a four.”

In the end, the duo couldn’t decide who won the challenge and settled for a draw.

Actor Karan Wahi, who is currently busy shooting for Khatron Ke Khiladi: Made In India, was initially skeptical to go outdoors and resume work, owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Donald will trump, predicts Kerala numerologist

0

Donald Trump may be trailing his Democrat rival Joe Biden in US polls in the run-up to the presidential poll, but a 68-year-old Kerala numerologist is ready to place his bet on Trump’s re-election as the US President in November for the second term.

MK Damodaran, a retired Kerala government employee, said his numerological calculations and analysis based on ‘fate and occult numbers’ and Trump’s date of birth, etc had made him predict Trump’s victory.

“November 3, 2020, is the day of the US presidential election, which is strongly lucky for incumbent President Trump. His date of birth is June 14, 1946. As such, his birth number is 5 (1 + 4). Besides, he was born in the sun sign Gemini that is ruled by planet Mercury. Number 5 is represented by planet Mercury,” Damodaran told IANS.

He further said that the coming election is the 59th such held after every four years.

“The number 59 again represents 5 (5+9=14, 1+4=5). The US got independence on July 4, 1776. The fate number of that day is also 5. (7 + 4 + 1 + 7 + 7 + 6=32, 3+2=5). The number 5 plays a key role for Trump.”

Analyzing further, Damodaran said that “the ‘fate number’ of Trump is 4 (6+1+4+1+9+4+6=31, 3+1=4). The year 2020 also represents number 4 (2+0+2+0=4). The so year 2020 is lucky for Trump”.

Damodaran said Trump’s ‘occult number’ is 48, which adds up to 3. “Since the election will be held on November 3, it augurs well for Trump,” the numerologist said.

He said that he had used such calculations to successfully make predictions about cricketing icon Sachin Tendulkar, India’s victory at the 2011 World Cup, etc. In 2012, he said, he had predicted that the US will top the medal tally in the London Olympics. The prediction was based on the lucky numbers of President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama.

Damodaran said that an analysis of Biden’s numbers indicated that his chances to get elected as the US President are “very remote”.

Vaping linked to higher Covid-19 risk in young adults: Study

0

A US study led by Indian-origin researcher has found that teenagers and young adults who used e-cigarettes (vaping) were more likely to be diagnosed with Covid-19.

The study, published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, examined connections between youth vaping and Covid-19 using US population-based data collected during the pandemic.

Among young people who were tested for the virus that causes Covid-19, the research found that those who vaped were five to seven times more likely to be infected than those who did not use e-cigarettes.

“Young people may believe their age protects them from contracting the virus or that they will not experience symptoms of Covid-19, but the data show this isn’t true among those who vape,” said the study lead author, postdoctoral scholar Shivani Mathur Gaiha from Stanford University in the US.

According to the study, surveys were completed by 4,351 participants aged 13 to 24.

The researchers recruited a sample of participants that was evenly divided between those who had used e-cigarettes and those who had never used nicotine products.

The sample also included approximately equal numbers of people in different age groups (adolescent, young adult, and adult), races and genders.

Participants answered questions about whether they had ever used vaping devices or combustible cigarettes, as well as whether they had vaped or smoked in the past 30 days.

They were asked if they had experienced Covid-19 symptoms, received a test for Covid-19, or received a positive diagnosis of Covid-19 after being tested.

The findings showed that young people who had used both cigarettes and e-cigarettes in the previous 30 days were almost five times as likely to experience Covid-19 symptoms, such as coughing, fever, tiredness, and difficulty breathing as those who never smoked or vaped.

Depending on which nicotine products they used and how recently they had used them, young people who vaped or smoked, or both, were 2.6 to nine times more likely to receive Covid-19 tests than nonusers.

Among the participants who were tested for Covid-19, those who had ever used e-cigarettes were five times more likely to be diagnosed with Covid-19 than nonusers.

Those who had used both e-cigarettes and conventional cigarettes in the previous 30 days were 6.8 times more likely to be diagnosed with the disease.

“This study tells us pretty clearly that youth who are using vapes or are dual-using (e-cigarettes and cigarettes) are at elevated risk, and it’s not just a small increase in risk; it’s a big one,” Gaiha said.

In July, another study, published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, revealed that young people who smoke and vape have an increased chance of becoming seriously ill from the Covid-19 virus.

2 light combat choppers made by HAL deployed in Ladakh

Amid border tension with China in Eastern Ladakh, two Light Combat Helicopters developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) have been deployed for operations at high altitude in Leh to support Indian Air Force missions.

R. Madhavan, CMD, HAL, on Wednesday said: “It is the lightest attack helicopter in the world, designed and developed by HAL to meet the specific and unique requirements of the Indian Armed Forces, reflecting the crucial role of HAL in Atma Nirbhar Bharat.”

The Vice Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Harjit Singh Arora took part in one such operation along with HAL test pilot, Wg Cdr (Retd), Subash P. John recently by taking-off from high altitude location to a forward area for a simulated attack on a high altitude target.

This was followed by a landing at one of the most treacherous helipads in the region. The Light Combat Helicopters successfully demonstrated its quick deployment prowess to forward locations in extreme temperatures.

Light Combat Helicopters is a potent weapon platform because of its state-of-the-art systems and highly accurate weapons that are capable of hitting any type of target by day or night.

The other features of Light Combat Helicopters include its ability to operate in the complete ‘Area of Responsibility’ (AOR) and altitudes. It has the capability to carry adequate weapon load at high altitudes under varied conditions. All these characteristics make it most suitable for hot and high altitude operations.

The IAF and the Indian Army together need around 160 Light Combat Helicopters. The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) had approved the proposal for an initial batch of 15 Light Combat Helicopters. The IAF had issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for 15 Limited Series Production (LSP) helicopters (10 for IAF and 5 for Army) and HAL had submitted its response.

Technical evaluation and the price negotiations have been concluded and HAL expects to deliver shortly. As a proactive measure, HAL had already launched the production of Limited Series Production in anticipation of the orders at its Bengaluru facility.

60,963 new corona cases take India tally across 23L

0

India’s novel Coronavirus tally crossed the 23-lakh mark on Wednesday with the detection of 60,963 new cases in the last 24 hours, while 834 more fatalities took the death toll to 46,091, the Health Ministry said.

Out of the total 2,329,638 cases, recoveries surged to 1,639,599 as a record 56,110 more patients recovered during the period. The recovery rate is nearly 70 percent now. The active cases in the country currently total 6,43,948.

Notably, the fatality rate, which is the proportion of people who die of the disease among individuals diagnosed, has dropped to about two percent, the Ministry said.

The country had touched the 20-lakh mark on August 7 and added more than 3,00,000 cases in less than five days. The silver lining, however, is that the gap between recoveries and active cases is growing every day. Currently, recoveries are 10 lakh more than the active cases.

As many as 7,33,449 samples were tested on Tuesday, taking the total to 2,60,15,297 samples to date, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research.

Maharashtra remained the worst-hit state with a total of 5,24,513 cases and 18,050 deaths, followed by Tamil Nadu with 302,815 cases and 5041 deaths. The southern state is followed by Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with Chief Ministers and representatives of 10 states, including Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Punjab, Bihar, Gujarat, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh for a review meeting.

He mentioned that almost 80 percent of the active cases are from the participating 10 states, and if the virus is defeated in these states, the entire country will emerge victorious in the battle against COVID-19.

Microsoft fixes 120 vulnerabilities, including 2 zero-day bugs

0

Microsoft has fixed 120 vulnerabilities with its new security patch, including two zero-day bugs in Windows operating system and Internet Explorer that were being exploited by the hackers.

Microsoft has released an August 2020 security update that has patched 120 vulnerabilities across 13 different products, from Edge to Windows, and from SQL Server to the .NET Framework.

Among the vulnerabilities fixed this month, 17 bugs received the highest severity rating of “Critical,” and there are also two zero-days, ZDNet reported on Tuesday.

The first zero-day bug known as CVE-2020-1464 was fixed as part of the new security update.

Microsoft said that an attacker can exploit this bug and have Windows incorrectly validate file signatures.

The second zero-day, tracked as CVE-2020-1380, resided in the scripting engine that ships with Internet Explorer.

Microsoft received a report from cybersecurity firm Kaspersky that hackers found a remote code execution (RCE) bug in the internet explorer scripting engine and “were abusing it in real-world attacks”.

The bug, now fixed, can be exploited by luring users on malicious sites, or by sending them booby-trapped Office files.

Manushi Chhillar: Likes and shares in virtual world add to pressure

Actress and former beauty queen Manushi Chhillar, on the occasion of International Youth Day on Wednesday, said that youth should feel free to be themselves, but also warned against online toxicity.

“We, the youth of our country, are riding on the technology wave and while there are massive advantages, there are disadvantages too. We are dealing with severe online toxicity and hate that one shouldn’t face growing up. Rather the youth should feel free to be themselves, discover their identities, make mistakes and learn from them,” Manushi said.

She added: “I pray we are super strong to take on this much negativity that’s thrown at all of us on a daily basis and are able to distinguish between what matters and what doesn’t.”

Manushi wants the youth to always know that these things don’t really matter.

“Likes and shares and comments in the virtual world are definitely adding up to the pressure and I would want the youth to always know that these things don’t really matter. It’s not real despite being quantifiable. What matters is who we are, what our core values are, how we treat others and how responsible we are towards our family, friends, environment and country,” she said.

Manushi is 23, and she feels living through the Covid pandemic has definitely set new priorities for the youth, including her.

“Youth and children are also growing up in an environment where they are living through a pandemic today and that’s bound to impact the way we envision the future. I hope it doesn’t unnerve the youth to explore and express. Youth should not be shy to innovate and to lead life fearlessly as we are the explorers of our future,” she says.

Manushi welcomes the conversation that the youth are maturing faster in an age of technology.

“All the innovations and all the predicaments that we have seen in such a quick time will definitely have an impact. I hope it only forms a part of the youth’s evolution process and doesn’t disillusion them from having experiences. Youth is meant to live without fear, live free, and always feel that they can chase the sun,” she said.

Manushi shared that on International Youth Day, she wishes that the youth of the country don’t succumb to these external pressures and continue to dream.

She said: “These minds will shape up the future of this world and I’m most excited to see what they create for themselves and other generations.”

Manushi is all set to make her Bollywood debut opposite superstar Akshay Kumar in the upcoming film “Prithviraj”. Directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi, “Prithviraj” is based on the life of King Prithviraj Chauhan. It stars Akshay as Prithviraj, while Manushi will play the role of the Sanyogita, the love of his life.
