Want to become world’s best midfielder, says Mariana Kujur

0

Indian junior women’s hockey team midfielder Mariana Kujur has said she idolizes her fellow Odia stalwarts Lilima Minz and Namita Toppo and has always looked up to them since her initial days in the sport.

Speaking from her Railways’ office in Mumbai, the 21-year-old said: “When I had begun my hockey career at the Panposh Sports Hostel, both Lilima di and Namita di were in their early years with the national side, and I would just be so happy to see them train at our academy whenever they would come home from national duty.”

“They have been inspirational in my career and I’ve also been very fortunate that they have been there to guide me along the way. When I see the journey that they have made, I feel really excited and confident because that means I can do such things as well,” said Mariana.

The young midfielder hails from a small village of Timna, which lies in Odisha’s Sundargarh district, a hockey hotbed of the country. Growing up, Mariana was always inclined towards the sport because of the hockey culture in her locality. Reminiscing her early days, Mariana said, “I come from an area where hockey is played in every village with the use of whichever piece of wood we can find. I was fortunate to have my elder brother who was always very passionate about the sport, and I would end up playing with him and my friends in my village.”

“It was in 2010 at the age of 11 when I finally gave trials and got selected for the Panposh hostel. It was at the academy that I realized my true potential, and here I am targeting a place in the Indian team in the future,” she said.

With both her parents’ occupation being farming in her native village, Mariana said it her dream to make them see her on TV one day. “When there is live hockey on television, my parents are often asking me why I am not playing at the Kalinga Stadium as our senior teams do. They do not realize that I am in the junior team, but it is my dream to make them very proud, and for them, that would happen if they are able to see me on television,” expressed the youngster.

Having established herself at the junior level, Mariana says her eventual dream is to play at the Olympics but wants to also become the best midfielder in the world.

“I am a midfielder and it gives me huge joy to be able to play my part both in attack and defense. My overall aim, like any other hockey player, is to make it to the Olympics and win medals for my country. But I also think about being the best midfielder in the world.

“I have so many great players to watch in our senior team, and I believe if I can pick up the good qualities of all of those players, I can become a complete player, and help my team also become the best in the world,” she said.

Amazon CEO can’t promise workers don’t see third party seller data

0

Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos have said that he cannot guarantee the company employees have not accessed third party seller data.

His response came during an antitrust hearing by a US Congress panel on Wednesday amid criticism that the workers of the online retail giant look into data of independent sellers on its platform to curate its own competing products.

Democratic lawmaker Pramila Jayapal asked Bezos a straight question: “Let me ask you, Mr. Bezos, does Amazon ever access and use seller data when making business decisions?”

“I can tell you we have a policy against using seller-specific data to aid our private label business but I can’t guarantee you that that policy has never been violated,” Bezos replied.

In April, the Wall Street Journal reported that Amazon employees got access to sales data from independent sellers on its marketplace.

“We continue to look into that very carefully. I’m not yet satisfied that we’ve gotten to the bottom of it, and we’re going to keep looking at it. It’s not as easy to do as you would think because some of the sources in the article are anonymous,” Bezos said during the hearing.

Before the release of the Journal’s report, Amazon had told Congress that it does not access sales data from independent sellers to help develop its own products, The Verge reported.

Holy water from Kanyakumari, Cauvery, sacred soil from TN sent to Ayodhya

0

Holy water from Triveni Sangamam or Mukkudal of Kanyakumari and Cauvery river and sacred soil from Tamil Nadu have been sent to Ayodhya where the “Bhoomi Puja” ceremony for Lord Ram’s grand temple will be performed on August 5, said officials of Tamil Nadu unit of Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP).

Mukkudal in Kanyakumari is the confluence of three seas — the Indian Ocean, Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea.

“Holy water from the Triveni Sangamam in Kanyakumari and sacred soil from Dhanushkodi near Rameswaram has been sent to Ayodhya,” R. Sethuraman, Organising Secretary, Tamil Nadu (South) VHP told IANS.

While S.V.Raman, Organising Secretary, Tamil Nadu (North) VHP told IANS: “Holy water from river Cauvery and scared soil from Ayothiapattinam in Salem and Denkanikottai near Hosur have been couriered.”

As per the legend, Dhanushkodi is the place where Lord Ram broke the Ram Sethu bridge with his bow’s end, and hence the name Dhanushkodi “bows end”.

Rameswaram is one of the important pilgrimage towns for Hindus where Ramanathaswamy Temple is located. The presiding deity is Lord Shiva. It is believed that Lord Ram prayed to Lord Shiva here.

Sethuraman said ‘prasad’ from Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam near Trichy will also be sent to Ayodhya.

Sethuraman said as per legend, Lord Ram used to perform pooja and pray to Ranganathaswamy (or Lord Vishnu in a reclining posture).

Lord Ram gifted the deity to Vibishana on the condition that the latter cannot keep the idol on the ground and if done then it could not be moved.

Vibishana is the brother of Lanka king Ravana who was killed by Lord Ram for abducting his wife Sita. While on his way to Sri Lanka (later as the island nation was referred to as), Vibishana kept down the deity on the banks of river Cauvery. Later he was not able to lift it. However, the Lord blessed Vibishana saying that he will always be looking South in a reclining posture and protect Sri Lanka. Vibishana succeeded his brother to the throne.

Scrap environment impact assessment draft: Green activists

0

Nearly 50 environmental groups and activists from Himalayan states have opposed a draft environmental impact assessment (EIA) notification, saying that it was an attempt to dilute the environmental regulations to facilitate ease-of-doing-business.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has put the notification that intends to modify the EIA of 2006.

The Himalayan region today is in the most vulnerable position with massive climate-induced disasters, increasing deforestation, loss of biodiversity, soil erosion, drying of rivers, death of groundwater sources, melting glaciers, hollowing of the mountains, solid and hazardous waste-related pollution, said the statement.

As it is, this ecological region is known to be fragile, where even small changes in the landscapes lead to rapid and wide-ranging impacts on the lives of millions of people.

This ecological crisis has worsened due to the poor implementation of regulatory and governance mechanisms. Lack of adequate and thorough scientific planning and impact assessment studies, non-compliance of environmental norms and social accountability laws, diminishing space for democratic public participation in decision-making processes have further worsened the situation in the past few years, it said.

The statement titled “Stop Accelerating Ecosystems Distress in the Himalayas” and “Withdraw Draft Environment Impact Assessment Notification”, said the latest move proposes more exemptions in environmental rules to be followed by companies and project developers under the EIA notification.

The EIA is a legal process, under the 1986 Environment Protection Act, for evaluating the likely environmental and socio-economic impacts of a proposed project or development.

Decision making under this process has a series of mechanisms, including the participation of affected populations, through ‘public consultation’, and review by technical and scientific experts, to ascertain that the costs of projects do not outweigh the benefits.

However this notification, it said, has been amended and read down several times, in the last two decades, in favor of leasing the norms’ for business.

The latest draft continues to move in the direction of rendering the EIA process a mere formality. Whereas what is required for the protection of the Himalayan ecology are stricter and more robust environmental laws, it said.

The fact that the government of India, under the Climate Change Action plan, had set up a separate national mission for Sustaining Himalayan Ecosystems, almost 10 years ago is indicative of the criticality of protecting the biodiversity, geology and socio-cultural fabric of this region.

From the Western to the Eastern Himalayas, there are about 12 states which fall in the Indian Himalayas sustaining a population of close to 80 million, dependent almost entirely on land and forest-based livelihoods.

Over the last three decades, governments — both state and national — have pushed policies and projects which have contributed to severe ecological distress.

The three most threatening developmental activities that have met with strong resistance from local communities and environmentalists include hydropower development, mindless construction of highways, and infrastructure for commercial tourism and growing industrialization.

Hydropower development is being undertaken in the entire Himalayan region of India, to develop a potential of 150,000 MW power. Nearly 90 percent of Indian Himalayan valleys would be affected by dam building and 27 percent of these dams would affect dense forests.

If all proposed 292 dams are constructed, on the basis of the current global number of dams, the region will have the highest density of dams in the world, added the statement.

The signatories were from Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Kashmir, Himachal, and Ladakh.

Samsung bets big on upcoming flagship phones to boost sales in Q3

0

Samsung, set to showcase its new line-up of flagship mobile devices next week, suffered a sales decline in its IT and mobile communications division in the second quarter but its performance was better than expected owing to efficient cost management, including reductions of marketing expenses and offline promotions.

The mobile business unit posted 20.75 trillion won in sales in the second quarter, down 19.7 percent from a year earlier, but the unit’s operating profit surged 25 percent on-year to 1.95 trillion won, the company announced on Thursday.

“Amid lockdowns in regions including North America and Europe and store closures due to the global impact of Covid-19, overall market demand decreased and the company’s smartphone shipment and revenue declined from the previous quarter,” it said.

The company now projects a gradual recovery in demand for its mobile devices, with a sales increase expected in the third quarter.

“Looking ahead to the third quarter, smartphone sales are expected to rise (QoQ), backed by a stronger product mix thanks to the launch of new flagship models, including the Galaxy Note and a new foldable phone, to be introduced at the upcoming virtual ‘Galaxy Unpacked’ event on August 5,” informed the company.

For the second half, the overall mobile market is expected to show a gradual recovery.

“However, uncertainties related to Covid-19 will continue to persist, with market competition expected to intensify as companies strive to make up for a weak performance during the first half,” said the company.

Amid increased market uncertainty, the company said it will respond timely to recovering demand in various regions by launching new flagship models as well as strengthening its mass-market lineup.

Samsung said it will continue efforts to enhance profitability through optimizing product portfolio, building on the improvement in profitability in mass-market models since last year.

Telangana’s Covid tally goes past 60K, deaths cross 500

The number of Covid-19 deaths in Telangana crossed 500 with 13 more people succumbing to the virus, health officials said on Thursday. The latest fatalities pushed the death toll to 505 while with 1,811 new cases the state’s tally climbed to 60,717.

According to the director of public health, the case fatality rate in the state remained low at 0.83 percent against the national average of 2.26 percent. 53.87 percent of the deaths occurred due to comorbidities.

The surge in new cases continued with 1,811 infections reported during the last 24 hours, ending at 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

While Greater Hyderabad remained the hotspot with 521, the figures show that spike continued in the cases in districts. There was a big surge in the Rangareddy district with 289 new cases while Medchal Malkajgiri reported 151 cases.

Warangal Urban (102), Karimnagar (97), Nalgonda (61), Nizamabad (44), Mahaboobnagar (41), Mahabubabad (39) are among the districts where the surge in new cases continued. All 33 districts reported new infections.

The officials attributed this to the increase in the number of daily tests.

The state conducted 18,263 tests, taking the cumulative number of tests to 4,16,202. The health department continues to maintain that its number of daily tests is well above the target of 5,600 tests as per the World Health Organisation (WHO) benchmark of 140 tests per million per day.

The state also witnessed the recovery of 821 more people, taking the total number of recoveries to 44,572. The officials claim that with a 73.4 percent recovery rate, the state is doing much better than the national average of 64 percent.

The state has 15,640 active cases, including 10,155 individuals in-home/institutional isolation. More than 84 percent of those under home isolation are asymptomatic.

3 in every 4 smartphones shipped in India were Chinese in Q2

0

Despite the supply chain issues and curtailed domestic production owing to lockdowns, almost three in four smartphones shipped in India during the June quarter were Chinese, a new report said on Thursday.

An immediate beneficiary of the challenges facing the Chinese smartphone brands was Samsung which had an efficient supply chain in place, according to CMR’s ‘India Mobile Handset Market Review’.

With a resilient supply chain, Samsung was able to arrest its declining market share and improve upon its market share to 24 percent in Q2.

“It remains to be seen if Samsung is able to maintain its market performance in the coming quarters, garner consumer demand, and compete against, and challenge the dominance of Chinese smartphone brands,” explained Amit Sharma, Manager-Industry Intelligence Group, CMR.

The third quarter will be the real test to demonstrate whether Samsung’s demand side is gaining momentum.

During the Q2, the cumulative market share of Chinese smartphone brands dipped to 73 percent which is akin to the levels last seen in Q3 2019.

The total smartphone shipments in India in the June quarter declined by a whopping 41 percent (quarter-on-quarter) and 48 percent (year-on-year) owing to the nationwide lockdown.

Xiaomi (30 percent), Samsung (24 percent), and Vivo (17 percent) rounded off the top three spots.

While Nokia’s smartphone share declined, Apple held onto the eighth position in the top 10 smartphone leaderboard, on the back of good demand for iPhone SE (2020), according to the report.

Xiaomi’s Redmi 8A Dual, Redmi 8 and Redmi Note 8 together contributed to more than 60 percent of its overall shipments.

For Samsung, Galaxy M11, A21S and A31 contributed to almost 50 percent of its overall shipments.

Vivo’s ‘V’ and ‘Y’ series were the most popular. The Y17 and Y91i along with newly released Y50 contributed to more than 55 percent of its overall shipments.

For Realme, C2, C3, 5i, and the newly launched Narzo series contributed to three-fourth of real shipments.

OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro contributed to one-third of its Q2 shipments and three fourth of all 5G shipments in Q2, said the report.

Samsung reports solid earnings in Q2 on strong chip business

0

Samsung on Thursday reported strong second-quarter earnings on the back of robust demand for memory chips and appliances, as well as a one-off gain at its display panel business.

Its net profit stood at 5.55 trillion won ($4.7 billion) in the April-June period, up 7.23 percent from a year earlier, Samsung said in a regulatory filing.

Samsung’s operating profit jumped 23.5 percent on-year to 8.15 trillion won in the second quarter of the year, but sales fell 5.6 percent on-year to 52.97 trillion won over the cited period.

Samsung’s operating margin for the second quarter stood at 15.4 percent, up from 11.6 percent a year ago.

Compared to the first quarter, its operating profit soared 26.3 percent, while net profit rose 13.7 percent. Sales declined by 4.3 percent

The figures were in line with the earnings guidance announced earlier this month that beat the market consensus.

Samsung said its upbeat performance was anchored by its device solutions (DS) division as demand for server chips from data centers remained solid with the pandemic-driven, stay-at-home trend.

The second-quarter bottom line was also helped by one-time gains from its display panel (DP) business. Samsung did not disclose the exact amount of one-off profit, but industry insiders speculate it received more than $900 million from Apple Inc., which apparently failed to buy contracted volumes of Samsung Display Co.’s mobile display panels.

Revenue from the semiconductor unit stood at 18.23 trillion won in the second quarter of the year, a 13.3 percent increase from a year earlier.

Its operating profit from the chip business nearly doubled to 5.43 trillion won from 3.4 trillion won a year ago.

“The memory business saw robust demand for cloud applications related to remote working and online education as the impact from COVID-19 continued, while demand for mobile was relatively weak,” Samsung said.

Samsung said earnings for its system LSI business fell due to a drop in demand for mobile components. However, its foundry business achieved a record quarterly and half-yearly revenue as its customers’ inventory buildups increased, reports Yonhap news agency.

Samsung’s display business returned to the black, thanks to one-time gains. It logged 6.72 trillion won in sales and an operating profit of 300 billion won.

Its display business suffered an operating loss of 290 billion won in the first quarter.

Samsung’s IT & Mobile Communications (IM) division suffered a sales decline, but its performance was better than expected.

The mobile business unit posted 20.75 trillion won in sales in the second quarter, down 19.7 percent from a year earlier, but the unit’s operating profit surged 25 percent on-year to 1.95 trillion won.

“Efficient cost management, including reductions of marketing expenses and offline promotions, helped deliver solid profits,” the company said.

Samsung’s home appliance division, comprised of visual display and digital appliance businesses, chalked up sales of 10.17 trillion won, down 8.1 percent from a year earlier, but operating profit climbed 2.8 percent on-year to 730 billion won.

“Profit for the visual display business rose despite softness in sales as the company sought new sales opportunities online to overcome difficulties sparked by global lockdowns,” the company said.

“Seasonal demand for air conditioners on top of cost-effective marketing strategies also helped earnings.”

In the second quarter, Samsung said its capital expenditures reached 9.8 trillion won, which includes 8.6 trillion won spent on semiconductors and 0.8 trillion won on displays. Its total capital expenditure in the first half was tallied at 17.1 trillion won.

Google supercomputer, Nvidia GPUs break AI performance records

0

Google said it has built the world’s fastest machine learning (ML) training supercomputer that broke AI performance records in six out of eight industry-leading MLPerf benchmarks.

Using this supercomputer, as well as the latest Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) chip, Google has set new performance records.

“We achieved these results with ML model implementations in TensorFlow, JAX, and Lingvo. Four of the eight models were trained from scratch in under 30 seconds,” Naveen Kumar from Google AI said in a statement on Wednesday.

To put that in perspective, it took more than three weeks to train one of these models on the most advanced hardware accelerator available in 2015.

Google’s latest TPU supercomputer can train the same model almost five orders of magnitude faster just five years later.

MLPerf models are chosen to be representative of cutting-edge machine learning workloads that are common throughout industry and academia.

The supercomputer Google used for the MLPerf training round is four times larger than the “Cloud TPU v3 Pod” that set three records in the previous competition.

Graphics giant Nvidia said it also delivered the world’s fastest Artificial Intelligence (AI) training performance among commercially available chips, a feat that will help big enterprises tackle the most complex challenges in AI, data science, and scientific computing.

Nvidia A100 GPUs and DGX SuperPOD systems were declared the world’s fastest commercially available products for AI training, according to MLPerf benchmarks.

The A100 Tensor Core GPU demonstrated the fastest performance per accelerator on all eight MLPerf benchmarks.

“The real winners are customers applying this performance today to transform their businesses faster and more cost-effectively with AI,” the company said in a statement.

The A100, the first processor based on the Nvidia Ampere architecture, hit the market faster than any previous Nvidia GPU.

World’s leading cloud providers are helping meet the strong demand for Nvidia A100, such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Baidu Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and Tencent Cloud, as well as dozens of major server makers, including Dell Technologies, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Inspur, and Supermicro.

“Users across the globe are applying the A100 to tackle the most complex challenges in AI, data science, and scientific computing,” said the company.

Sushant was murdered: Subramanian Swamy gives his reasons

BJP Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy strongly feels that actor Sushant Singh Rajput was “murdered”.

Swamy took to Twitter on Thursday and posted a document to support his claim.

“Why I think Sushanth Singh Rajput was murdered,” Swamy tweeted along with a photograph of the document that has 26 points.

According to the document, the mark on Sushant’s neck did not indicate suicide but instead hinted at homicide.

The document further claims that for suicide by hanging, one has to hang himself by removing the table under his feet. “This huge force is not possible in homicidal strangulation,” read the document.

The document further reads that marks on his body indicate “beating”.

This comes a day after Swamy spoke to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and said that he will initiate a CBI inquiry into the matter.

Sushant was found dead at his residence in Bandra, Mumbai on June 14. Post mortem report stated the actor had committed suicide. The police are still investigating the case.

CBI takes over probe into Kerala musician’s death

0

Almost 22 months after the death of hugely popular young musician Balabhaskar in a road accident, near here, the CBI has taken up the probe, for which an FIR has now been lodged by the CBI.

The Kerala government sought a CBI probe in December last year after the request came from his father.

Balabhaskar, 40, was traveling by his wife and two-year-old daughter from Thrissur to the state capital, when their car met with an accident in the wee hours of September 25, 2018, on the outskirts of the capital city.

While the daughter died on the spot, Balabhaskar passed away on October 2. His wife and driver escaped with injuries.

Soon after the incident occurred, doubts surfaced on who was driving the car, when it met with the accident, when some reports said it was driven by the driver, some other reports mentioned that it was driven by the musician himself.

Incidentally, the first revelation came a few days later when popular stage artiste Kalabhavan Soby said it was not an accident, as he noticed ‘certain things’ at the accident site when he passed through that way, soon after the incident took place.

One reason why this new CBI probe will attract more attention is the alleged presence of one person, now arrested in the gold smuggling case, soon after the accident took place.

It was the musician’s father C.K. Unni, who first raised apprehensions in the Kerala Crime Branch Police probe, then, as he felt it was a probe that lacked conviction as, despite their requests, a few things were not being looked into, by them.

Bengal Congress chief Somen Mitra passes away

“Saddened to hear about the passing away of the veteran leader, former MP and Indian National Congress West Bengal president Somen Mitra. My deepest condolences to his family, followers, and well-wishers,” Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted.

Mitra took charge as the state Congress chief in 2018 and played a crucial role in forging an electoral understanding between the Left parties and Congress in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. This was his third stint as Bengal PCC chief.

“Saddened at the death of veteran Congress Leader Somen Mitra. As the constitutional head was enormously benefited by his wise counsel on several occasions. Bengal will always recall his sagacious contributions in public life. Pray Almighty to bestow eternal on the departed soul,” Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar tweeted.

Mitra started his political career from north Kolkata and came to limelight in the 970s. He became MLA in 1972 from Sealdah Assembly constituency and went on to represent the seat seven times.

Later, he left the Congress party in 2008, floated his own outfit and joined Trinamool Congress in 2009, during the Nandigram-Singur movement.

Mitra was elected from Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha seat on a Trinamool ticket in 2009. But he snapped his ties with Trinamool Congress and returned to Congress in 2014.

Petrol, diesel prices unchanged for fourth day in a row

0

With the global oil market stable for the past few days, consumers in India have been spared of a price rise of auto fuels for the fourth consecutive day.

Oil companies kept petrol and diesel prices unchanged on Thursday taking global cues where benchmark crude oil prices have remained static around $43 a barrel for the past few days now.

In Delhi, diesel continues to be priced at Rs 81.94 a liter while petrol’s steady run continues for 30 straight days at Rs 80.43 a liter.

While the price rise had gone for a pause now, sources in oil companies indicated that some increase could be expected later this week or early next week but it would be marginal considering international price movements.

Any reduction in petrol and diesel prices at this juncture looks remote and would depend on oil prices falling consistently from the current levels and hold the trend for a few days.

Assuming a steady rupee, every dollar per barrel fall in crude prices could result in about 40 paise per liter decrease in petrol and diesel prices and vice versa.

Oil companies resumed the dynamic pricing system for daily revision of the two auto fuels from June 7 after keeping the price unchanged for around 82 days during the lockdown. Since then, while petrol prices have risen by Rs 9.17 a liter, diesel prices have risen by Rs 12.55 a liter in the national capital.

29 new cases take Agra corona tally to 1,730

0

The spurt in fresh cases in the past two weeks, continues to worry the district health task force battling Covid-19 in the Taj city.

A total of 29 fresh cases and a death took the tally to 1,730 and fatalities to 99 on Thursday.

District Magistrate P.N. Singh said that 21 Covid-19 patients were discharged taking the number of recoveries to 1,401. So far 46,641 samples have been collected in the district.

With the new cases reported, the number of active cases now is 229 in Agra.

The state government appointed nodal officer for the district, Alok Kumar, after visiting several hot spots in the city instructed the police officials to issue challan to all those found without masks. He directed the municipal corporation officials to step up cleanliness drive.

Meanwhile, jail authorities in Agra said that sisters would not be allowed to meet their brothers in jails on Raksha Bandhan. According to a new arrangement, women would now need to deposit rakhies in the jail office in envelopes bearing the names of the inmates. These would later be passed to their brothers in the jail.

In another order, those arrested by the police for various offences would have to be tested for Covid-19 before being sent to the temporary jail that has come up in the MD Jain Inter College at the Hari Parbat crossing.

K’taka minister distributes Ayurveda drug to boost immunity against Covid

As prevention is better than cure or treatment, Karnataka’s Rural Development Minister K.S. Eshwarppa has decided to distribute Ayurvedic tablets or decoction to boost immunity against the infection in the Shivamogga city.

“With vaccine still in the making to fight the coronavirus pandemic, the minister has set up an organization (Suraksha page) to distribute Ayurveda tablets and decoction to every house in his home town Shivamogga in the state’s central region,” a department official told IANS here on Thursday.

Shivamogga in the picturesque Malnad region is around 310km northwest of Bengaluru

“As the age-old Indian traditional medicine, Ayurveda has no side effects and can be taken by all to improve health and strengthen immunity against any disease, especially Covid-19,” asserted the official.

Bengaluru-based noted Ayurvedic doctor Giridhar Kaje developed the native potion and the herbal tablets to boost immunity.

About 85,000 families covering over 4-lakh people will be covered in the initial phase across the city and extended depending on the response from the public.

The non-profit organization plans to raise funds to make the medical kits with two types of 10 tablets and decoction powder for selling at Rs 350 per kit.

The organization has made wearing masks, washing hands with sanitizer, and maintaining 4-6 feet physical distance compulsory for the effective use of the Indian medicine.

“Citizens having ‘Aadhaar’ card or the 12-digit unique identity card will be given the medical kit. The software has been developed to avoid giving the kit to the same person again, as every family has to be covered,” added the official.

As the pandemic rages, affecting lives and livelihood, Eshwarappa said in a statement in Kannada that alternate medicine was being used as a preventive measure against the virus. There are over 800 active cases in the Shivamogga district.

“Enhancing the body’s natural defense system (immunity) is essential to maintain good health and prevention is better than cure,” said Eshwarappa.

The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) has said that it has signed world marathon record holder and Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge as magical Kenya destination ambassador.

KTB’s CEO Betty Radier said on Wednesday that the engagement, commencing in July, will see Kipchoge promote the east African nation as a preferred tourism destination locally, regionally, and internationally through various campaigns, reports Xinhua news agency.

“Kenya is well known as the home of champions hence sports form part of our strategy to popularise the country’s tourism offerings,” Radier said in a statement.

Kipchoge has won 12 of 13 marathons he has participated in. He is the world record holder with a time of 2:01:39, and the first man to run a sub-two-hour marathon in the special event dubbed INEOS Challenge in Vienna, Austria.

Speaking on his appointment, Kipchoge urged local and foreign visitors to explore and experience what the country has to offer.

“Being Kenyan is a very beautiful thing. I am passionate and love my country dearly, and it is an honor to be working with KTB on projects geared towards propelling Kenya as a preferred tourist destination globally. Kenya has a lot to offer,” he said.

Kenya is home to 60 national parks and reserves, a broad offering of cultural and historic attractions, and over 500km of sunny coastline. It has seen the tourism sector rise to the second-largest foreign exchange earner in the country.

Apple offered Amazon Prime Video app lower 15% fee, shows email

The US House antitrust subcommittee has revealed that Apple offered a lower 15 percent subscription fee to Amazon for bringing its Prime Video app on the Apple TV set-top box.

Apple normally charges a 30 percent fee for most in-app purchases but in the case of Amazon, it allegedly offered a 15 percent fee on subscriptions that signed up through the Prime Video app, according to an email exchange released by the US Congress panel during the testimony on Wednesday.

The US Congressional hearing over anti-competition practices of the global tech giants was also attended via video conference by Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, Sundar Pichai of Google, and Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg.

“Apple executive Eddy Cue emailed Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos in 2016 suggesting Apple would take a 15% fee on subscriptions that signed up through the app, which is lower than Apple’s customary 30% fee for most in-app purchases,” reports CNBC.

The approach showed that “big players can negotiate for better business terms” on Apple’s App Store.

Cook, however, testified on Wednesday that “We apply the rules to all developers evenly”.

In 2017, Cook announced that Amazon’s Prime Video service would be launching on the Apple TV set-top box.

Apple generally takes 30 percent of the initial purchase price, including 30 percent from the first year of subscription services that customers buy through the app, then drops the fee to 15% in the second year of a subscription.

Swedish music streaming service last year lodged an antitrust complaint with the EU regulators, saying iOS App Store rules are unfair.

Spotify said that Apple requires it and other digital services to pay a 30 percent tax on purchases made through Apple’s payment system, including upgrading from a free to a premium subscription.

Apple slammed Spotify for wanting “all the benefits of a free app without being free”.
