Notice to MLAs: Rajasthan HC accepts plea to make Centre a party

0

The Rajasthan High Court on Friday accepted a plea filed by Congress MLA Prithviraj Meena to make the Centre a party to an ongoing case filed by former Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot and 18 other party MLAs following disqualification notices to them by the Assembly Speaker.

In his petition filed on Wednesday, Meena said: “It is humbly prayed that the Union of India through the Secretary, Ministry of Law and Justice, (Dept of Legal Affairs) be made a party/respondent to the present writ petition in the interest of justice and law.

Assembly Speaker CP Joshi had served the disqualification notices to the rebel MLAs, including Pilot, on the charge of “anti-party activities” soon after they skipped two Congress legislative party meetings in July.

The Speakers were first asked to defer action in the matter by three days last week when the High Court began hearing the case in which the petitioner MLAs challenged Para 2(1)(a) of the Schedule X of the Constitution.

The Pilot camp got another three-day breather on Tuesday from the High Court after it finished hearing the arguments and reserved the judgment for July 24.

The rebels had argued that no whip can be in issued when the Assembly is not in session and maintained that they had no plans to quit the ruling Congress but wanted a change in its Rajasthan leadership.

Meanwhile, Speaker Joshi on Wednesday filed a CLP in the Supreme Court, and its hearing is scheduled on Monday.

Maren Morris expresses anger against mommy shamers

Singer Maren Morris is completely against mommy shamers.

Morris recently made headlines when a section of social media users criticized her for posting a picture in a low-cut top. Now, in a chat show, she opened up on the criticism, slamming trollers, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

“I would just have to say to anyone that is a mother who is shaming another mother, it obviously comes from deep insecurity in your own motherhood that you have to criticize someone else that’s brand new at this. We all feel like we suck in the beginning anyway,” she explained.

Morris and her husband Ryan Hurd became proud parents to their son Hayes in March this year.

Also, the singer has decided to be a little more private about her son on social media.

“It’s been so fun sharing photos of him, but I feel like I can take someone saying my music sucks, or I’m ruining country music, but for some reason the ‘mother card’, I just can’t emotionally handle right now. So I’m just going to protect myself and him from it,” she added.

We have locked Sep 19-Nov 8 window for IPL 13: Chairman Brijesh Patel

0

Indian Premier League (IPL) Chairman Brijesh Patel has confirmed that the 13th edition of the league will be played around the September 19 to November 8 window and the same has been communicated to the franchises.

Speaking to IANS, IPL Chairman Patel said that the window has been zeroed in on. “We have had a discussion and we are looking at the September 19 to November 8 window for this edition of the league. We have informed the franchise about the same,” he said.

The window could see some discussion as the England and Australia players will be engaging in a series in the UK till September 15 and that could mean them missing the first few games of their respective franchises. But Patel said it shouldn’t be an issue and these things are set to be discussed in the Governing Council meeting that is to be held next week.

“Shouldn’t be a problem. The England-Australia series ends on September 15. So, we should have them flying indirectly to Dubai. We will discuss the final matters in the governing council meeting next week,” he said.

The official announcement might happen only after the Indian Premier League’s Governing Council meeting, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has joined the franchises in making logistical plans for the 13th edition of the cash-rich league to be played in the UAE as reported by IANS.

Apart from the IPL teams, logistics and operations teams from the BCCI will also be heading to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah to see to it that preparations are on in full swing and there are no execution woes. If the UAE airlines don’t start operations then all will fall back on chartered planes.

The ICC on Monday announced that the T20 World Cup cannot be held in Australia in October-November as the time isn’t conducive to host so many teams in the country as the threat of the coronavirus pandemic isn’t over yet. This has opened the door for the BCCI to host the IPL in that window.

Decks cleared for Agra Metro project, with conditions

0

After the Supreme Court green signaled the Agra Metro project, the fourth largest in the state, the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (UPMRCL) has started gearing up. The biggest task, however, is planting 18,230 saplings as per the Supreme Court order.

The Agra Metro project is worth Rs 8,379.62 crore having two corridors — Sikandra to Taj East Gate of 14 km route length and Agra Cantt to Kalindi Vihar of 15.4 km. The corridor 1 — Sikandra to Taj East Gate — will comprise 13 Metro stations, six elevated and seven underground.

The project will benefit around 20 lakh people.

The feasibility study for the Agra Metro project was conducted in 2016, which was later approved by the Cabinet on February 28, 2019.

On March 8, 2019, the Prime Minister laid down the foundation stone of the project via video conferencing. Due to the restrictions and intervention from the Supreme Court of India, the construction work was put on hold which finally got a nod from the apex court two days ago.

The apex court gave its approval for the implementation of the Agra Metro project subject to certain guidelines and conditions to be followed as per the recommendations of the Central Empowered Committee.

The apex court stated that as per the recommendations of the Central Empowered Committee (CEC), UPMRC will now have to plant 18,230 saplings, 10 times more than the number initially proposed during the project execution phase.

The CEC submitted its final recommendations to the Supreme Court on February 12, 2020. In a hearing held in December last year, the court sought a report from the CEC on the petition of the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation to which the Committee itself visited Agra and after overviewing the overall conditions gave its final approval for the implementation of the Agra Metro project.

Kumar Keshav, MD, UPMRCL said, “It’s a moment of immense pleasure for the entire UPMRC team that the apex court has finally given its nod to carry on the civil construction work of the Agra Metro project.

“We have already floated various tenders of the Agra Metro to expedite the commencement of the civil construction work. We had received various ‘Green Initiative’ awards for the Lucknow Metro project, which will be replicated in Agra and Kanpur Metro projects. We will continue to strive hard to achieve our mission of ‘Green Metro-Clean Metro’.”

Ali Fazal about returning to work: We need to be smart, healthy, cautious

Actor Ali Fazal recently returned to the studios for a dubbing session. Although the COVID pandemic still looms large, Ali feels there is no scope for fear anymore.

The actor was back at work for the upcoming second season of the web series, “Mirzapur”.

“I am rather happy about going to work. We cannot fall prey to fear or that’s the end of us as we know it. Nothing can come out of fear. We need to be smart, healthy, and simply cautious,” he said.

Working remotely all through the lockdown, the cast recently reunited in full strength for the dubbing session.

Besides key members of the cast including Shweta Tripathi Sharma, the actors were also joined by people from the production team. The actors ensured that they practiced social distancing all through.

“We had dubbed a few episodes before the lockdown, so we picked up mid-way. It was great to be back because this has been an unusually long break. We shot for the show long back, so it took us some time getting back into the groove,” said Ali.

“The studios are on point about hygiene, so they allow one artiste at a time. So we walk into a pre-sanitized studio. The instructions are given on the other side. Dubbing is a system that was already an isolated job,” he added.

Microsoft Surface Duo appears at US FCC ahead of release

0

Microsoft in October last year showcased a foldable smartphone Surface Duo and now, a new report has claimed that the tech giant submitted the device to the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC), indicating work on the hardware has been finished.

According to a GizmoChina report, FCC tested both the screens of the device along with its hinge as well as the device’s network capability.

The foldable smartphone is at the end of its testing phase and could possibly become available in late August or early September.

Surface Duo is expected to come with mid-range specs, including the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC, 6GB RAM, and either 64GB or 256GB of storage.

The device will also feature a single 11MP camera sensor above the right display that will be used for both front and rear-facing photos and videos and will be powered by Snapdragon 855 processor, 6GB RAM/64GB or 256GB storage options.

The smartphone houses two equal-sized 5.6-inch AMOLED displays. Each screen offers a 4:3 aspect ratio, 1800 x 1350 pixels resolution, and 401ppi pixel density.

Surface Duo’s two displays are held together with a fully rotating hinge that can be adjusted to any angle. The device is loaded with Android 10 OS and is expected to come with apps from Microsoft.

Surface Duo will ship with a 3460mAh battery and feature USB-C fast charging.

The device will not support 5G, maxing out at 4G LTE speeds instead. It is also speculated that the device lacks support for wireless charging and NFC.

Hackers steal data from 8 universities in UK, Canada

0

Hackers have compromised student and alumni data in at least eight universities in the UK and Canada including University of York, University College, Oxford, University of Leeds, and University of London via a massive attack on a US-based software provider called Blackbaud.

Blackbaud, one of the world’s largest providers of education administration, fundraising, and financial management software, was hacked in May and it did not disclose this externally until July and for having paid the hackers an undisclosed ransom, reports the BBC.

Now, it has been learned that at least 8 universities have suffered data breach.

Oxford Brookes University, Loughborough University, University of Reading, Ambrose University in Alberta, Canada, Human Rights Watch, Young Minds, and Rhode Island School of Design in the US are among those impacted.

“All the institutions are sending letters and emails apologizing to those on the compromised databases,” the report said on Friday.

The compromised data involves former students, staff, existing students, and other supporters.

In some cases, the stolen data included phone numbers, donation history, and events attended.

Credit card and other payment details do not appear to have been exposed, according to the report.

Blackbaud did not provide the information on those impacted, saying it wanted to “respect the privacy of our customers” and was working with law enforcement and third-party investigators to check if data is being circulated or sold on the Dark Web.

“We want to reassure our alumni that, since being informed by Blackbaud of this incident, we have been working tirelessly to investigate what has happened, in order to accurately inform those affected,” Leeds University said in a statement.

Blackbaud in July admitted the hack.

“While this sophisticated ransomware attack happened, we were able to shut it down and have no reason to believe this will result in any public disclosure of any of our customers’ data,” Blackbaud President and CEO Mike Gianoni told The NonProfit Times.

Blackbaud paid a ransom to have the hijacked data destroyed by the cybercriminals but did not reveal the amount.

Four barracks of the Jhansi district jail have been converted into a level one COVID hospital after a total of 128 inmates tested Corona positive.

A spokesman of the Director-General (Prisons) said “two inmates were symptomatic while 126 were asymptomatic” about the Thursday development.

So far, 748 inmates in the district jail have been tested and of these, 126 have turned out positive.

District Magistrate Jhansi, Andhra Vamsi, said: “Four barracks have been converted into a level one COVID hospital and all the 120 are admitted there.

On July 9, one inmate with fever was sent to the district hospital where he tested positive. Later, one more who showed symptoms tested positive.

Mike Tyson, 54, to make boxing comeback in September

0

Former world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson has announced that he will be coming out of retirement and will fight Roy Jones Jr. in an eight-round exhibition match on September 12 at Dignity Health Sports Park in Los Angeles.

On his Legends Only League website, Tyson has announced the bout against Jones Jr., a 51-year-old fighter. “It’s just going to be amazing,” the 54-year-old said. Jones last fought in 2018.

Tyson, who became the youngest heavyweight champion of all time when he defeated Trevor Berbick in 1986 aged 20, won 50 of his 58 professional fights before retiring after his loss to Kevin McBride in 2005.

In May, Tyson had teased fans about his possible comeback to the ring by posting a cryptic message on social media.

In a video put on Instagram, Tyson was seen growling through a workout hitting the pads. “Anything is possible when you are smart about it. Train Smart. Recover Smarter,” he had written as the caption.

Towards the end of the video, he said: “I am back.”

Kidnapped man killed, body yet to be found

0

The Kanpur police have now said that Sanjeet Yadav, who was kidnapped on June 22, was murdered on June 26-27 by his friends and his body was thrown into the Pandu River.

SSP Dinesh Kumar Prabhu said that the information about the murder of Sanjeet Yadav, a lab technician, was received from five persons who had been detained by the police.

Among those detained, are two of Sanjeet’s friends. The motive behind the kidnapping and murder is still not known.

The body of the victim has also not been recovered as yet.

The Kanpur police had landed in a major controversy after it asked the family of a kidnapped man to pay the ransom money to the kidnappers.

The family arranged for the money, Rs 30 lakh, and went to the designated spot on the Gujaini railway track on July 13.

The police were apparently waiting in the wings to swoop down on the kidnapper.

However, the entire plan went awry when the kidnapper fled with the money and there was no sign of the victim.

According to reports, Sandeep, son of Chaman Singh who worked at a local pathology lab, was kidnapped on June 22.

The kidnappers called up the family and demanded Rs 30 lakh as ransom. Subsequently, Chaman Singh lodged a complaint and an FIR was registered at the Barra police station.

On the advice of the police, Chaman Singh managed to arrange the ransom amount and, as asked by the police, he handed it over to the kidnapper.

“However, the police said that they are clueless about the whereabouts of the kidnappers as well as my son,” Singh told reporters.

A video of his daughter crying for help from the media and the police has also gone viral on social media.

The family blamed the local police for botching up the investigations.

The SSP said on Friday that separate teams have been formed and further investigations were on to trace the body of the victim.

He also assured us to investigate the role of the cops and said that if found guilty, they will face strict action.

Apple co-founder Wozniak sues Google, YouTube over Bitcoin scam

0

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has sued Google and its subsidiary YouTube over a Bitcoin scam, alleging that the tech giant failed to take down videos that used Wozniak’s likenesses for allowing bitcoin giveaway scams on its platform.

The lawsuit, filed in San Mateo County Superior Court, alleged that the videos used images and videos of Wozniak and other tech leaders like Bill Gates and Elon Musk “to deceive YouTube users into thinking if they sent cryptocurrency to an account they would receive twice as much back”, reports San Francisco Chronicle.

“YouTube has featured a steady stream of scam videos and promotions that falsely use images and videos of Plaintiff Steve Wozniak, and other famous tech entrepreneurs, and that have defrauded YouTube out of millions of dollars,” read the complaint.

Wozniak was one of 18 plaintiffs that filed the lawsuit this week.

Wozniak said that the allegations “paint a picture of an algorithm-driven tech giant that does not respond to victims and that YouTube has allowed scammers to use me, Bill Gates, Elon Musk and others to defraud innocent people out of their cryptocurrency”.

The lawsuit, however, praised Twitter for acting “swiftly and decisively” to shut down malicious accounts and “protect its users from the scam” after the micro-blogging platform faced a mage cryptocurrency hack, in which a host of verified Twitter accounts owned by well-known public figures posted a Bitcoin giveaway message.

The accounts of major public figures including US Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, Barack Obama, Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Apple, and Uber were simultaneously hacked by attackers to spread a cryptocurrency scam on Twitter.

“In stark contrast, for months now, Defendant YOUTUBE has been unapologetically hosting, promoting, and directly profiting from similar scams,” the lawsuit read.

A YouTube spokesperson said in a statement: “We take the abuse of our platform seriously, and take action quickly when we detect violations of our policies, such as scams or impersonation”.

The lawsuit demands a trial by jury and damages that include legal expenses, and any “gains, profits, or advantages wrongfully obtained by Defendants.”

24 new cases take Agra Covid-19 tally to 1,581

0

The last 24 hours saw a spurt in the Covid-19 cases in the Agra region. A total of 24 new cases were reported taking the tally to 1,581.

According to the district health officials, the number of active cases was 195 and the death toll has gone up to 96. So far, 1,291 persons have recovered from the disease.

Even the neighboring districts of Agra have also recorded a hike in corona cases. Mainpuri reported 37, Etah five, Mathura 16, Ferozabad five, and Kasganj nine.

Two Agra Municipal Corporation employees tested positive on Thursday. The whole building complex was being sanitized and all employees screened, an official said.

More than 30 percent of cases are being reported from the 90 containment zones.

While the facility of the rapid antigen tests at over a dozen centers has been provided free by the state government, there were complaints of delay and in a few cases of charging a fee. The Yogi government has already outlined the policy for home isolation with a strict protocol.

The city will observe a 55-hour total lockdown from Friday night.

Meanwhile, sweet shop owners in the city have demanded permission to open their establishments before the Raksha Bandhan festival.

“If our shops remain closed during the weekend before the festival, customers will be deprived of the opportunity to buy sweets. Ghevar, in particular, is in big demand. Members of our association have been observing the guidelines strictly,” said Shishir Bhagat, a member of the delegation that met the district officials on Wednesday.

Google provides $39.5mn to 5,600 news publishers to weather crisis

0

Google has so far provided $39.5 million in funding to more than 5,600 publishers in 115 countries who are facing financial hardship as a result of the economic and advertising downturn in the pandemic.

India’s digital-only news organization East Mojo and Tamil language publication Minnambalam are among the small and medium local newsrooms around the world that will receive emergency funding from Google ranging from $5,000-$30,000 (approximately Rs 3.7 lakh-Rs 22.7 lakh), the search engine giant announced in May.

To provide help, the Google News Initiative (GNI) in April launched the Journalism Emergency Relief Fund (JERF).

According to Ludovic Blecher, Head of Google News Initiative Innovation, the money that has been provided “is being applied in diverse and creative ways, from ensuring basic reporting needs and giving emergency stipends to allow reporters to cover the crisis, to driving audience engagement and generating subscriptions”.

Within two weeks of the announcement, Google received more than 12,000 applications.

“The massive response gave us the opportunity to understand what ‘local’ means in different parts of the world, and how dynamics ranging from newsroom size to ownership structure can differ depending on the region and the kinds of communities served,” Google said in a statement on Thursday.

For instance, the average newsroom size varied from 20 in the Asia Pacific to eight in North America.

Advertising continues to be the sole source of revenue for most JERF recipients, with 50 percent claiming to be totally advertising dependent.

A survey showed that less than 30 percent of recipients operate some form of a paywall, while less than 18 percent rely on community contributions or memberships to support their journalism.

“That situation is changing, though, with 60 percent of the recipients planning to diversify their revenue streams by developing subscription, membership or contribution models,” said Google.

Additionally, around 20 percent of publishers said they are prioritizing a need for cultural change that includes a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion as well as organizational and business management.

Eng vs WI: Wisden Trophy to be replaced by Richards-Botham Trophy

0

England and the West Indies will compete for a new Richards-Botham Trophy when they next meet in a Test series after both the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Cricket West Indies (CWI) agreed to retire the Wisden Trophy.

The title honors Sir Vivian Richards, one of cricket’s greatest batsmen who scored more than 8,500 runs in a 121-Test career, and Sir Ian Botham, the legendary all-rounder who scored more than 5,000 runs and took 383 wickets in 102 Tests.

The Wisden Trophy, first introduced in 1963 to commemorate the hundredth edition of the Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack, will now be kept at the MCC Museum at Lord’s.

“This is a huge honor for my good friend Ian and myself. I am delighted to know that the game that I have shown my love for since a little boy is naming such a prestigious award in my recognition of what I managed to achieve as a cricketer,” Richards said in a statement shared on CWI website.

“When I had the opportunity to go to England and represent Somerset, one of the first persons I met was Ian Botham, who would later become one of my best friends. We are friends for life.

“To have this trophy – West Indies vs England – named in honor of our work on the cricket field is great. What I think is also remarkable is that it says a lot about our relationship off the field as well. We were competitors on the field, but we showed we were brothers off the field. I’m proud to have my name on one side of the trophy with him on the other side,” he added.

Botham said: “Viv was the finest batsman I ever played against. He’s a great friend but we’ve always been competitive, not least when we were on the cricket field, and there was no one else’s wicket I would treasure more.”

“Playing the West Indies was always one of the toughest tests in cricket, and it’s an honor for this trophy to bear our names. I hope future series will be just as exciting as the one we’ve all been enjoying this summer,” he added.

Richards averaged 62.36 against England across his career with eight hundred. He dominated the 1976 series between the two sides, scoring 829 runs at an average of 118.42 in the series which West Indies won 3-0. This included 232 in the first Test and 291 in the fifth. He also made what at the time was the fastest Test hundred in the game against England in 1986, taking just 56 balls to reach his century. It is still an equal second-fastest of all time.

Botham took 61 wickets at an average of 35 against the West Indies, with three five-wicket hauls and a best of 8/103 at Lord’s. He also scored four 50s, with a best of 81 in the same game at Lord’s in 1984.

Go live on Facebook from Messenger Room group video calls

0

In the next step to integrate its apps, the social networking giant has introduced a new tool for users to broadcast live to Facebook from Messenger Rooms.

This feature is rolling out in some countries on Facebook and Messenger web from Friday and will soon expand to all countries where Messenger Rooms is available as well as to the Facebook and Messenger mobile app and Messenger desktop app.

The users can turn group video calls in Messenger Room into a Facebook Live broadcast with up to 50 people.

“As a room creator, you can broadcast your room to a Profile, Page or Group, and invite people to tune in,” Facebook said in a statement.

Between WhatsApp and Messenger, more than 700 million accounts participate in calls every day. In many countries, video calling on Messenger and WhatsApp more than doubled, and views of Facebook Live and Instagram Live videos increased significantly.

“Live broadcasts from Pages doubled in June 2020 compared to the same time last year, largely attributed to broadcasts since March 2020,” informed Jasmine Stoy, Product Manager, Facebook.

This is how it works.

Create a room that can go live right from Facebook or Messenger web, and invite anyone to join, even if they don’t have a Facebook account.

The room creator controls the live broadcast, including where the room is shared on Facebook, who can view the broadcast, and who’s invited to participate.

All the room participants will receive a notification inviting them to join the live broadcast and will have to opt in to participate.

They can also choose to leave the room before it goes live.

The room creator can add or remove participants from the live broadcast at any time and room participants can leave the live broadcast at any time.

“Room creators can also lock and unlock a room during the live broadcast,” said Facebook.

When a room creator chooses to go live, the broadcast is shared with Facebook and people outside the room may see what’s happening in the room based on the audience and where the room is shared on Facebook.

Facebook said that as with other Live videos, they may collect and review audio and video from the broadcast to make sure it follows Community Standards.

“We’ll continue to add enhancements over the coming months,” it added.

David Guetta on lockdown: Enjoying first summer holiday since I was 17

Grammy Award-winning music producer David Guetta has discovered something positive about the pandemic-induced lockdown. He says he is enjoying his first summer holiday since he was 17, and that he has never felt so creative in the past 15 years.

“I’m having the first summer holidays in my life with my children. It never happened to me,” said Guetta, as he joined the special virtual Tomorrowland Around The World press event from his boat, where he was enjoying the break with his family.

“I went to this place where they always go for the first time in my life. It is very charming. It feels like I’m 16 years old again. There are, like, 10 kids in a house, and we take very small boats, nothing fancy, no yacht. There’s no VIP show-off. We lay down on the stand, we take this small boat and we eat oysters in the middle of the sea. It’s really amazing,” he added.

The “Titanium” hitmaker continued: “Of course, I understand the frustration of many people, and we are very lucky because we don’t have to worry if we’re going to eat next month. We also realize how blessed we are to have money on the side and we can wait to go back to work next year. But you know, so far, I’m not gonna lie. I’m enjoying the very first summer holiday in my entire life since I was 17.”

Workwise, he said: “I’ve never been so creative since (the past) 15 years.”

At the moment, the globally renowned French DJ-music producer is pepped up about his performance at digital festival Tomorrowland Around The World, available in India through BookMyShow.

Talking about it, the 52-year-old said: “It is kind of crazy that I have played from the first one to this one and I hope they keep letting me play for the next ten years. I saw it grow and respected Tomorrowland for being so creative. This is the only festival that has the guts to not only try a new creative model, in terms of, artistically but also even economic model. Because we have no idea how it’s going to go. But I respect that they are willing to take the risk to do something innovative. That’s how we created that (music) scene, by doing things that have never been done before.”

“I’m honestly super curious (about the virtual edition),” he added.

The fest will take place on July 25 and July 26.
