Microsoft to shift Minecraft workloads from AWS Cloud to Azure

0

Popular video game Minecraft which has over 126 million monthly users globally will stop using Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud and will shift its workloads to Azure Cloud from its parent company Microsoft.

According to a report in CNBC, the “shift represents an obvious way for Microsoft to cut back on payments to one of its toughest competitors and promote its own product”.

Azure is growing faster than many other Microsoft offerings. Most of its consumer and commercial properties, including the video conferencing app Teams, now run on Azure Cloud.

Microsoft would also “migrate LinkedIn from its own dedicated data centers to Azure,” according to the report on Monday.

Minecraft has topped 200 million sales, with 126 million people playing the game monthly. The game has seen a huge increase in use since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

Over the last month, the game has seen an increase of 25 percent in new players, with a 40 percent rise in multiplayer sessions specifically.

When Microsoft acquired Mojang (the game developer behind Minecraft) for $2.5 billion in 2014, the game had sold more than 50 million copies across PC, Xbox 360, PS3, and other platforms.

The sandbox game hit the 100 million mark in 2016, meaning the growth of the game has actually increased in the last four years in comparison to the first five years after it launched in November 2011, according to the company.

Minecraft developer Mojang also announced a new name for the studio in celebration of the 11th anniversary of Minecraft. The new name for the developer is Mojang Studios.

“Mojang Studios has used AWS in the past, but we’ve been migrating all cloud services to Azure over the last few years,” a Microsoft spokesperson was quoted as saying in the report.

“We’ll be fully transitioned to Azure by the end of the year,” the spokesperson added.

Accept ICC’s decision to postpone T20 WC: Cricket Australia

0

Cricket Australia has welcomed the decision of the International Cricket Council (ICC) to postpone the Men’s T20 World Cup amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We accept the ICC’s decision to postpone the T20 World Cup in Australia. It was a decision made with the safety and well-being of fans, players, officials, and staff in mind,” Nick Hockley, the interim chief executive of Cricket Australia and chief executive of the T20 World Cup 2020, said in a statement.

The ICC, having dilly-dallied over the last couple of months, on Monday finally announced that the 2020 edition of the T20 World Cup to be held in Australia from October 18 to November 15 has been postponed.

“The COVID-19 pandemic is impacting sporting tournaments across the globe and cricket is not immune,” said Hockley.

“The complexities and risks around hosting a 16-team international event in October in the current environment ultimately proved sufficient for the ICC to postpone the event.”

Australia and India remain hosts of the next two events, but which country hosts which year is still to be determined in order to allow the ICC to continue to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and increase the chance of staging two T20 World Cups.

Hockley expressed confidence that Australia would host an outstanding tournament when a revised date is set.

“A lot of hard work has gone into hosting the tournament in Australia this year and I would like to thank everyone involved for their passion and commitment.

“The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup earlier this year will forever be remembered as a groundbreaking moment in Australian sport, and I have no doubt the men’s edition will also be a spectacular event.

“We are confident that with this decision, we will give ourselves the best chance to safely welcome fans into the outstanding venues across the country to enjoy watching the world’s best men’s cricketers compete in this major global event in either 2021 or 2022,” he added.

COVID-19: No new positive cases since July 13, says NBA

The National Basketball Association (NBA) has said that no new positive COVID-19 cases have been uncovered in the latest rounds of testing.

“Of the 346 players tested for COVID-19 on the NBA campus since test results were last announced on July 13, zero have returned confirmed positive tests,” NBA said.

“In the event that a player on the NBA campus returns a confirmed positive test in the future, he will be isolated until he is cleared for leaving isolation under the rules established by the NBA and the Players Association,” it added.

In a previous update, it had said two of the 322 players who had arrived at the campus since July 7 had tested positive.

The 2019-20 NBA season is slated to resume on July 30 at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida without spectators.

From July 22-28, each participating team will play three inter-squad scrimmages in final preparation for the season restart. Meanwhile, the NBA has also announced the restart rosters for the 22 teams.

Pandemic will make ‘The Walking Dead’ film better: Robert Kirkman

“The Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman feels the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic will make an upcoming Rick Grimes spin-off film even better.

During a recent panel discussion, Kirkman spoke about the film’s progress.

“There’s tons of stuff going on behind the scenes. I don’t want anyone to think that we’re just kind of waiting around for this pandemic to end. I would say that, if anything, the pandemic is going to make a lot of movies better. I think the Rick Grimes movie is chief among them because we’re getting a lot more time to cook this thing and make sure it’s perfect,” he said.

“The Walking Dead” film has been in the pipeline for two years, ever since actor Andrew Lincoln left the role of Rick Grimes on the TV show. The film is planned to be the first of a trilogy, reports radiotimes.com.

Oil companies hold Diesel, petrol prices again

0

A day after diesel prices increased to extend its gain over petrol in Delhi, oil marketing companies decided to keep the pump prices of the two petroleum products unchanged on Tuesday.

Accordingly, diesel continues to be priced at Rs 81.64 per liter in the capital, while petrol has maintained steady levels at Rs 80.43 a liter.

Oil companies had raised diesel prices marginally by 12 paise on Monday while keeping petrol prices unchanged. Petrol prices had maintained the same level of Rs 80.43 a liter since June 29 when its pump price rose marginally by 5 paise over previous days’ price.

The unexpected rise in diesel prices despite slower demand has put the transport sector at a big disadvantage as rising fuel cost has further shrunk its margins.

With the hikes in diesel prices, the gap between the two auto fuels has further widened in the national capital. Last month, diesel prices overtook that of petrol in Delhi, in an unprecedented development.

Along with the Capital, petrol and diesel prices also remained unchanged in other metro cities as well.

Oil companies began a daily revision of the two auto fuels from June 7 after keeping the price unchanged for the last 82 days during the Covid-19 related lockdown. Since then petrol and diesel prices have increased by Rs 9.5 and Rs 11.5 per liter respectively.

Chinese Covid vax produces immune response in phase 2 trial

0

A phase 2 trial of a Covid-19 vaccine candidate conducted in China has found that the vaccine is safe and induces an immune response, according to a new study published in the journal The Lancet.

This comes barely 24 hours after on Monday The Lancet only published that a Covid-19 vaccine developed by scientists at the Oxford University produces strong immune responses in both parts of the immune system, showed results of Phase I/II trial.

The results from the Chinese trial provide data from a wider group of participants than the phase 1 trial, which was published in May. Phase 1 trial involved 108 healthy adults and it demonstrated promising results.

“The phase 2 trial adds further evidence on safety and immunogenicity in a large population than the phase 1 trial. This is an important step in evaluating this early-stage experimental vaccine and phase 3 trials are now underway,” said study researcher Feng-Cai Zhu, Jiangsu Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention in China.

The Ad5 vectored vaccine in this trial uses a weakened human common cold virus (adenovirus, which infects human cells readily but is incapable of causing disease) to deliver genetic material that codes for the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein to the cells.

These cells then produce the spike protein and travel to the lymph nodes where the immune system creates antibodies that will recognize that spike protein and fight off the coronavirus.

According to the researchers, 508 participants took part in the trial of the new vaccine. Of these, 253 received a high dose of the vaccine, 129 received a low dose, and 126 received a placebo.

Approximately two-thirds of participants were aged 18-44 years, with a quarter aged 45-54 years, and 13 percent aged 55 years or older

Participants were monitored for immediate adverse reactions for 30 minutes after injection and were followed for any injection-site or systemic adverse reactions within 14- and 28-days post-vaccination.

The trial found that 95 percent of participants in the high dose group and 91 percent of the recipients in the low dose group showed either T cell or antibody immune responses at day 28 post-vaccination.

The vaccine-induced a neutralizing antibody response in 59 percent and 47 percent of participants, and binding antibody response in 96 percent of participants, in the high and low dose groups, respectively, by day 28.

The participants in the placebo group showed no antibody increase from baseline.

“Since elderly individuals face a high risk of serious illness and even death associated with COVID-19 infection, they are an important target population for a COVID-19 vaccine,” said Wei Chen from the Beijing Institute of Biotechnology.

“It is possible that an additional dose may be needed in order to induce a stronger immune response in the elderly population, but further research is underway to evaluate this,” Chen added.

The authors noted that the trial was conducted in Wuhan, China, and the baseline immunity is representative of Chinese adults at that time, but other countries may have different rates of immunity which should be considered.

Chhetri urges women’s team to start preparations for AFC Asian Cup 2022

0

India men’s football team captain Sunil Chhetri has urged the women’s team to leave no stone unturned and start preparing from now itself for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup scheduled to be held in India in 2022.

In June this year, AFC granted India the right to host the coveted continental tournament. This makes it the second major women’s tournament to be held in India in the space of two years after the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2021.

“It is an amazing opportunity that they have — to play in such a high-level tournament. These are the levels where you want to be, playing the best in the continent,” Chhetri, who holds the distinction of being the only Indian player to have appeared in two different editions of an Asian Cup, said.

“I’d like to urge all of them to start preparing for the tournament from now on itself. The last thing you want to do is feel regret once you start playing the tournament.

“Look into every small aspect of your game and try to improve it – your touch, speed, saving ability, shooting, burning those extra body fats – the process needs to start from right now,” he added.

Having faced some of the top Asian oppositions in the AFC Asian Cup in 2011 and 2019 respectively, Chhetri feels that it is a unique opportunity for every player.

“It’s such a great opportunity to play against some top opposition from Asia. That is why it is even more important to start preparing from now,” Chhetri said.

“Once you have taken every step and prepared yourself in every manner possible, make sure that you enjoy the tournament once you start playing it. It’s not every day that you play on the continental stage, and it’s important for you to enjoy the moment.

“The pressure will always be there but it’s important to enjoy it because football is all about being happy. I’d be more than happy to watch you all from the stands, once the tournament starts,” he added.

EU leaders reach deal on COVID-19 recovery package (Ld)

0

Leaders of the European Union (EU) reached a landmark deal on Tuesday after four days of marathon negotiations over a massive COVID-19 recovery fund and a budget for the next seven years.

An unprecedented 1.82 trillion euro ($2.1 trillion) deal was finally announced to confront the worst recession in the EU’s history, reports Xinhua news agency.

Charles Michel, President of the European Council, tweeted “Deal” shortly after the 27 leaders reached the agreement at about 5.15 a.m. on Tuesday, adding that it was a “pivotal moment” for Europe.

Michel said the bloc had “showed collective responsibility…and our belief in a common future”.

The deal also centers on a 390 billion-euro program of grants to member states hardest hit by the pandemic, the BBC reported.

Talks that began in Brussels on July 17 saw a split between nations hardest hit by the outbreak and “frugal” members who were concerned about costs.

The self-proclaimed frugal four – Sweden, Denmark, Austria, and the Netherlands – along with Finland, had opposed allowing 500 billion euros to be offered in the form of grants.

The group, led by Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, originally set 375 billion euros as the limit, in addition to wanting conditions such as the right to block requests.

Other members, such as Spain and Italy, did not want to go below 400 billion euros.

The summit saw more than 90 hours of talks and became the EU’s longest since a 2000 meeting in the French city of Nice, which lasted for five days.

The package will now face more technical negotiations by member states and need ratification by the European Parliament.

Responding to the development, French President Emmanuel Macron said it was a “historic day for Europe”.

“Never before did the EU invest in the future like this,” Belgian Prime Minister Sophie Wilmès tweeted.

Also taking to Twitter, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said: “Today we’ve taken a historic step, we all can be proud of. But other important steps remain. First and most important: to gain the support of the European Parliament.

“Nobody should take our European Union for granted. It is our common responsibility to deliver.”

CBI not allowed in Rajasthan sans state govt’s permission

0

The officials of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will not be allowed in Rajasthan without the permission of the state government, said a notification issued by the state’s Home Department.

The decision of the Ashok Gehlot government was taken a day after the Union Ministry of Home Affairs summoned the state government in the phone tapping case.

The Union Home Ministry sent a notice to the state government regarding the phone tapping of broker Sanjay Jain for his alleged involvement in horse-trading of MLAs. The Ministry questioned under what rule the tapping was done.

Officials confirmed that there was a fear factor ruling amongst Congress leaders that after the Income Tax and the ED, now the CBI can also be brought into the political war going on between two warring factions — one headed by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and the other by former deputy chief minister Sachin Pilot.

However, the notification is not a new thing as the state government had written to the central government in 1990, making it aware that in the cases involving CBI investigation, the state government will only give consent on a case to case basis.

The notification clearly states that if the CBI visits Rajasthan to investigate cases related to the IPC, then it must first get the consent of the state government.

However, in international, national, and inter-state matters, the CBI is not required to get the consent of the state government.

Namit Das: My bias is towards playing villain

The thrill of essaying dark roles has caught on with actor Namit Das.

Straying from the ‘the good guy’ zone was a fun challenge for Namit, who always wanted to play an antagonist. In “Aarya”, Namit is seen playing Jawahar.

In another new series, “Mafia”, the actor is seen essaying the role of Nitin Kumar, a Dalit from Bihar, who enters the police force to fight against the injustice meted out to his community.

“Every actor desires the chance to enact intense dark roles. When these roles came to me, I feared to render a ‘caricaturish’ performance, but my directors got the best of me,” said Namit.

“It’s wonderful that I’m on someone’s binge-watch list and that most importantly, I could entertain people during such a difficult time. While I hope for variety in my work, I think my bias is towards the wish of playing the villain,” he added.

Florida Guv sued over school reopening amid pandemic

0

A teachers union in Florida, which has become a global coronavirus epicenter, sued the state’s Governor and education officials, in order to prevent schools from reopening next month as the pandemic was raging.

The lawsuit, filed on Monday by the Florida Education Association (FEA) in a state circuit court in Miami, sought to challenge Governor Ron DeSantis’ order requesting all schools in the state to open for in-person learning five days a week starting from August, reports Xinhua news agency.

The lawsuit intends to stop the reckless and unsafe reopening of public school campuses as coronavirus infections surge statewide, according to the FEA.

It is supported by the affiliates of the American Federation of Teachers and the National Education Association.

In addition to the Republican Governor, the suit also listed Florida Commissioner of Education Richard Corcoran, Florida Department of Education, Florida Board of Education, and Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez as defendants.

With cases – now more than 355,000 in total – increasing by over 10,000 daily for the last six consecutive days and death toll topping 5,000, Florida has emerged as a new global epicenter of the contagion.

It is against this backdrop that DeSantis, on July 6, ordered schools to reopen, doubling down on his request in the following days.

“Governor DeSantis needs a reality check, and we are attempting to provide one,” FEA President Fedrick Ingram said.

“The governor needs to accept the reality of the situation here in Florida, where the virus is surging out of control,” Ingram said, adding that while reopening schools is a common aspiration, Florida teachers “don’t want to begin in-person teaching, face an explosion of cases and sickness, then be forced to return to distance learning”.

Google logs 69% jump in requests for cycling directions in Maps

0

Google has introduced new biking features in Maps after learning that requests for cycling directions in Maps jumped by 69 percent, hitting an all-time high last month, in Covid-19 times as more and more people look for safer ways to get around.

Starting from Tuesday, when people look up biking directions, they will see end-to-end directions that include “docked bike-share” information in 10 cities globally.

Steps will include detailed walking directions to bikeshare stations near your starting point along with living bike availability, turn-by-turn cycling directions to the bike-share station closest to your destination with live dock availability, and walking directions from there to your final destination.

“For some cities, Maps will show you links to open the relevant bike-share app to book and unlock the bike,” said Vishal Dutta, Product Manager, Google Maps.

“As more people choose to cycle, they’re buying new bikes, fixing up old ones, and turning to bike-sharing options. In fact, worldwide search interest for bike repair near me’ hit an all-time high this month, more than double what it was last year,” Dutta said in a statement.

Over the last several years, Google has launched a dockless bike and scooter integration with Lime in more than 100 cities and introduced real-time docked bike-share information to help travelers in select cities locate bike-sharing stations and real-time availability.

With bike-share providers seeing sharp increases in usage during Covid-19, “it’s even more important to quickly and easily check how many bikes are available at the station you’re headed toward and if there are docks available to drop off your bike near your destination”.

Google introduced biking directions in Google Maps 10 years ago. Now, it’s available in nearly 30 countries around the world and millions of people use it every day.

“As biking habits change, especially as things evolve with Covid-19, we’re constantly updating this information to help you uncover the most reliable bike route,” said Dutta.

Google Maps uses a combination of machine learning, complex algorithms, and understanding of real-world conditions based on imagery and data from government authorities and community contributions.

“We’re working to integrate hundreds of thousands of new bike lanes in the coming months. Local government agencies can provide this data through our Geo Data Upload tool to have their latest bike lane information reflected in Google Maps,” informed Dutta.

Sky is the limited for ‘incredible’ Stokes, says Root

0

England skipper Joe Root has lavished praise on all-rounder Ben Stokes, who played a crucial role in team’s emphatic win over West Indies in the second Test of the ongoing three-match series.

On Monday, England defeated West Indies by 113 runs at the Old Trafford to level the series.

“He’s (Stokes) Mr. Incredible. I suppose. I certainly think he can keep performing at this level. I think the sky’s the limit for him really,” Root said after the match as per ESPNcricinfo.

“To have such a complete game, and so many different gears at your disposal, allows you the ability to keep getting better,” he added.

Stokes, who played a patient 176-run knock in the first innings, came out all guns blazing while opening the batting in the second innings as he scored 78 runs off just 57 balls. His knock helped the hosts set a challenging target which they defended successfully by bowling out the West Indies for 198. Besides, Stokes also picked up three wickets in the game and was adjudged the Man of the Match.

“If he (Stokes) continues to read situations the way he is, and keeps the confidence that he’s playing with at the moment, there’s no reason why we can’t continue to see such brilliant performances as we have done this week, and over the last 12 months really,” Root said.

“I think everyone understands that we are watching a player at the peak of his powers, at the peak of world cricket, delivering time and time again.

“We have to savor that, we have to appreciate that and understand that we are, without trying to pump his tires too much, in the presence of greatness,” he added.

The two teams will now face each other in the series decider beginning Friday at the Old Trafford.

Israel extends flight restrictions until Sep

0

Israel has extended flight restrictions until at least September 1, the country’s airport authority said.

The extension of the restrictions came following the recent sharp increase in coronavirus morbidity in Israel, reports Xinhua news agency.

These restrictions ban the entry of foreign nationals into Israel, excluding exceptional cases approved by the Population and Immigration Authority, with a 14-day quarantine obligation.

In addition, returning Israelis may enter the country, but must undergo an immediate 14-day quarantine, the Israel Airports Authority said on Monday.

In mid-June, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu estimated that the opening of Israeli skies to flights would be on August 1, with possible flights to Greece and Cyprus.

However, the number of new daily cases has since jumped from a few dozen to almost 2,000, which has delayed the plan.

According to the Ministry of Health, the number of coronavirus cases in the country has reached 50,714, of which 28,424 cases are active.

The death toll currently stood at 415.
