Barcelona made it all about the Champions League

0

Barcelona made it all about the Champions League and after surrendering La Liga to Real Madrid, now it is all they have left. Winning the title last season for the eighth time in 11 years was never going to be enough. Winning the double had not been either the year before. La Liga and the Copa del Rey had become Barca’s default, their domestic dominance taken for granted and then diminished by disappointment in Europe.

A mess of a season could still be saved by the Champions League but even the most optimistic of fans expect the worst against Bayern Munich, Barcelona’s probable opponents in the quarter-finals.

Many, including Lionel Messi, are worried even about getting past Napoli, with the pandemic-delayed last 16 matchup poised at 1-1. “I said long ago that if we continued in this way, it would be very difficult to win the Champions League and that has been shown to be the case in La Liga too,” said a frustrated Messi after the loss to Osasuna on Thursday.

“If we want to fight for the Champions League we will have to change a lot because otherwise the match against Napoli, we will lose that as well.”

Just over a year on from almost winning the treble, Barcelona look set to finish without a trophy of any kind for the first time in 12 years.

And yet the concern is not so much the many failures of this season but the possibility they could be just the start.

Messi is 33 and his anger is directed primarily at the board, whose leadership has left Barcelona with a team seemingly neither for the present nor the future.

There has been no succession plan for Messi since Neymar joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2018 and that world record fee has been squandered on players that have failed to settle or been sold to balance the books.

Antoine Griezmann bought for 120 million euros, left Atletico Madrid for the Camp Nou and what he thought would be the pinnacle of his club career. Yet earlier this month, he was reduced to coming off the bench, against Atletico, in injury-time.

And it is not just Messi nearing the end. Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets, Luis Suarez and Jordi Alba are all 31 or older.

Gold loan demand back on working capital requirement: Muthoot Finance

0

The gold loan business of Muthoot Finance has returned to normal amid the pandemic backed by the need for working capital by small businesses and shops, George Alexander Muthoot, the Managing Director of Muthoot Finance.

Speaking to IANS, Muthoot said the company’s operations were largely halted during the initial phase of the nationwide lockdown till April, but as restrictions were eased in May, demand for a gold loan also increased.

“We have seen a lot of people availing gold loans now also. Our loans are mainly driven to small business people, shopkeepers for their working capital requirement,” he said.

He added that as shops and establishments are opening up now and “they need money quickly, probably to buy stock, to pay their debtors or probably for any other business working capital”.

He also said that the company’s gold loan business is likely to witness a 15 percent growth in the current financial year bucking the slowdown that other non-banking financial companies (NBFC) are facing.

He noted that due to the lockdown the business in April was impacted but the company was able to make it up in May and June.

“We are back to normal now,” said the MD.

Further, the recent surge in gold prices to record levels has also helped the gold loan providers, he noted, as it makes their collaterals stronger and gives the loan giver a good margin for the gold price.

That has also been a positive for the gold loan NBFCs including the Kochi-headquartered Muthoot Finance.

Muthoot further told IANS that in a strategic move the company will focus more on the digital front and around 40 percent of its customers have already taken to online transactions.

On the question of likely change on business operations or strategy post the pandemic, the Muthoot Finance MD said: “Our business model is intact but customers having to walk to our branches will not be as easy as before, that’s why we are encouraging more online business. That a strategic change we are making, more of an online business.”

According to the company, it has recorded strong traction on its ‘Muthoot Mobile App’ as well as the online portal in the months following Covid-19 pandemic and the company has seen a four-fold jump in the quantum of loan disbursals on its through digital platforms to the tune of Rs 224 crore in June 2020 from that in February.

It has witnessed a 73 percent growth of unique customers transacting on its digital platforms in June when compared to February.

On the outlook for the sector, Muthoot seemed optimistic and said that demand for gold loans is only going to rise from here on.

“All businesses require money and that is where gold loans come in. As long as people require quick money, the gold loan will be the best product.”

Over 13K register to volunteer for B’luru Police Covid duties

0

More than 13,470 people have registered to volunteer as civil police wardens with the Bengaluru Police, to assist in regulation and anti-COVID measures, said an official on Friday.

“We are proud of Bengaluru and every Bangalorean. A call by the Commissioner of Police for civil police volunteers and we are overwhelmed with the response,” said Additional Commissioner of Police Hemant Nimbalkar.

He said 13,470 citizens, who care for the city, have registered to fight COVID shoulder to shoulder along with the police and called the response an unprecedented civic movement.

The volunteers registered from the eight divisions of the city. Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao said the volunteers were doing outstanding work.

“Outstanding work being done by the overwhelming number of Bengaluru civil police volunteers, they are unsparing. Policemen have become law-abiding citizens,” said Rao.

On Tuesday, Rao had urged interested people to volunteer for the department, indicating how short-staffed the department has been amid the pandemic.

As some people were misunderstanding that the voluntary work would be a paid duty, Rao later clarified that people volunteering as civil police wardens with the city police department will not receive any remuneration.

Incidentally, people from as far as Ramangara, Tumkur and other districts have also applied, but the department is considering only volunteers from the city as they want people with local geographical knowledge.

The volunteers will accompany the policemen in night patrolling, man check posts, answer questions of the general public, and assist station house officers.

They are also required to assist in documentation and computer work at the police station level, enforce social distancing, and wearing face masks among the public.

As many as 100 volunteers were used in the Bengaluru South division on Thursday night for barricading, patrolling, and assisting the policemen.

On Thursday, Bengaluru reported more than 2,000 cases with 2,344 infections, raising its tally to 25,288, out of which 18,828 are active.

Being the epicenter of the pandemic in the southern state, Bengaluru hosts 61 percent of all the active cases.

Bengaluru is currently under COVID lockdown till July 22, 5 a.m.

“Rohit Sharma has the ability to play all types of deliveries, be it short ones or good length deliveries. His records speak for itself and picking his wicket would be a dream come true for me,” Naseem told cricingif.com in a video interview.

Zidane architect of this LaLiga title, says Real Madrid President

0

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has hailed his players and coach Zinedine Zidane after they wrapped up the 2019-20LaLiga title.

Real Madrid secured their 34th LaLiga title after a 2-1 win at home to Villarreal on Thursday night. Karin Benzema scored twice in a game they needed to win to assure the title with a game still to play this season.

“We really wanted to win this league title and that is what we have done,” Perez told Spanish television network Movistar.

“They have all put in enormous performances, especially Karim Benzema, Thibaut Courtois, and Casemiro, while Sergio Ramos is more than a captain.

“They have all built a brilliant team spirit while Zidane is the architect of this title win as he has put the players to work. We are so pleased.”

Earlier, Zidane had stated that he is feeling like the happiest person in the world at the moment.

“It’s huge. It’s a constant battle. There are 38 games, and only at the end can you achieve something great like today. I’m extremely thankful to the players, first and foremost, because they’re the ones fighting out on the pitch,” Zidane was quoted as saying at the post-match presser by the club’s official website.

“I have my role and I’m with them, but it’s a team effort. This is a huge achievement, it’s incredibly emotional. It’s very tough to win the Spanish league, very tough indeed.

“There are people who say that happiness makes no noise, but I’m the happiest person in the world on the inside right now. Many thanks to everyone for the support,” he added.

What media firms need to do to attract more advertisers

0

Strengthening the sales teams’ digital expertise, improving campaign monitoring and reporting, and identifying what makes your publication unique are some of the steps that local media can take to attract more advertisers, says a study.

The recommendations come at a time when the coronavirus pandemic has accelerated a dramatic decline in advertising revenue that supports local media.

The findings are based on a study by Google News Initiative (GNI) and Local Media Consortium.

Market research firm Magid led this analysis and gathered insights from national and local advertisers and agencies across the United States to understand their perception of local media, Fran Wills, CEO, Local Media Consortium, wrote in a blog post on Thursday.

Magid found that more than half of advertisers think trustworthy relationships with publisher sales teams are extremely important when making investment decisions.

While advertisers see value in local media because of their market proximity and unique relationship with communities, many find their digital expertise to be a barrier.

This digital knowledge gap is preventing advertisers from spending more with local news, said the study titled “2020 Advertiser Assessment of Local Media Digital Advertising.”

“Local media companies should prioritize equipping their teams with digital sales training, so they can more effectively provide advertisers with campaign recommendations and insights, as well as serve as credible consultative partners,” Wills said.

Local media companies should also focus on developing more streamlined processes and campaign reports that are timely, intelligible, and solutions-oriented.

No Covid cases in my constituency, claims KPCC chief

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president D.K. Shivakumar on Friday claimed that there were no new coronavirus cases in his Kanakapura Assembly constituency in Ramangara district.

“No new COVID cases in Kanakapura taluk and all positive cases have been cured. I thank my constituency’s people who have helped in strictly following the lockdown guidelines in containing the virus spread,” said Shivakumar here.

Kanakapura is about 60 km southwest of Bengaluru on the old Mysuru road.

“We continue to remain vigilant. We are also distributing 30 immunity-boosting tablets to every house,” said the 7-time legislator, considered as the party’s Man Friday and a troubleshooter in the southern state.

Shivakumar’s younger brother D.K. Suresh is the party’s only Lok Sabha member to win in the April-May 2019 for the second time from Bengaluru Rural district.

Shivakumar, 58, took charge as the party’s state unit president on July 2 amid the coronavirus-induced lockdown to revive the party in the state.

The claim of Kanakapura being virus-free came a day after the party’s firebrand leader sought President’s rule in the southern state alleging the ruling BJP government failed to tackle the pandemic, as evident from the spurt in positive cases since July 1 when Unlock 1.0 was allowed and people violated the lockdown guidelines.

“It’s time the BJP government resigns and allows President’s rule in the state, as it has miserably failed to control the COVID cases, which have been surging daily,” Shivakumar told reporters here on Thursday.

Latching on to state Health Minister B. Sriramulu’s observation on Wednesday that “only God can save Karnataka from the pandemic”, Shivakumar said the government’s incompetence had left the citizens at “God’s mercy”.

“Why do we need a government which cannot tackle the pandemic? What Sriramulu said reflects poorly on the BJP government’s ability to handle the situation, which appears to be going out of its control due to its incompetence,” thundered Sriramulu.

Shivakumar’s attack on the nearly year-old BJP government came amid a 9-day lockdown in Bengaluru Urban and Rural districts since July 14 night up to July 22 morning to contain the surging COVID spread.

With a record 4,169 new cases on Thursday, the state’s COVID tally breached the 50,000-mark to touch 51,422, including 30,655 active cases after 19,729 were discharged to date, while 1,032 patients succumbed to the infection, with 104 in the last 24 hours.

Accounting for about 60 percent of the state’s cases, Bengaluru reported a record 2,344 cases on Thursday, taking its overall tally to 25,288, including 18,828 active after 5,952 were discharged with 497 a day ago, while 507 died of the infection, with 70 in the last 24 hours.

In contrast, the Ramanagara district has 396 cases, including 192 active after 195 were discharged so far while only 9 succumbed to the infection.

Sonam: Being an actor, I know how important our appearance is

Bollywood actress Sonam K. Ahuja says being an actor, she knows how important their physical health and appearance are.

Sonam took to her verified Instagram account, where she posted a picture of actress and stuntwoman Mary Ann Evans, who was popularly known as “Fearless Nadia”.

Alongside the image, Sonam wrote: “I don’t know how you guys feel, but I’m blown to bits! When I read about Nadia, I was stunned. Being an actor, I know how important our physical health and appearance are. There’s a reason why most actors today don’t perform their own stunts.”

Sonam wrote that even now, “physical combat is seen as something that only men are supposed to do in films.”

“Running on trains and fighting the enemy or even working the whip – these are seen as things the “hero” does to win. Many say that she was better at stunts than most male actors of the time!” she wrote.

Sonam called “Fearless Nadia” a true legend.

“Added to all of this is the fact that from Australia she came to India, learned the language, learned the craft, and made a name for herself here. It’s amazing how she challenged the norm back in the 30s and 40s and decided to risk it all by doing her stunts herself. So inspiring and courageous. A true legend, in my opinion!” she said.

Fearless Nadia is most remembered as the masked, cloaked adventurer in the popular 1935 film “Hunterwali”.

Serena Williams to headline new WTA event in Lexington

0

Twenty three-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams will make her return to WTA tennis at the upcoming inaugural edition of the Top Seed Open.

The tournament organizers announced on Thursday that US Open champions Williams and Sloane Stephens are set to compete at the event set to begin on August 10 in Lexington, Kentucky.

The event will be Williams’ first match action since she helped Team USA defeat Latvia in Fed Cup in February, where she defeated Jelena Ostapenko and was beaten by Anastasija Sevastova.

She had previously confirmed her intentions to chase a 24th Grand Slam title at the US Open beginning August 31, saying that she “cannot wait” to return to the Flushing Meadows.

The Kentucky tournament was one of two new events confirmed by WTA chief executive Steve Simon last week as additions to the tour’s revamped calendar which will resume with the Palermo Open in Italy on August 3.

The US Open, which will be played behind-closed-doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will feature the men’s and women’s singles main-draw events, each with the traditional 128 players, and men’s and women’s doubles events, with 32 teams in each competition (down from 64 teams).

FIR against Union Minister Shekhawat in audio clip case

An FIR has been filed by the SOG in Rajasthan against Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and two others on the basis of a complaint by Congress whip Mahesh Joshi soon after three audio clips with alleged conversations on the toppling of the Ashok Gehlot government were released by the ruling party.

Shekhawat has denied any of the tapes has his voice while another BJP leader said the tapes were doctored.

The clips have recorded purported conversation between Shekhawat, Congress MLA Bhanwarlal Sharma, and Jaipur resident and BJP leader Sanjay Jain while discussing plans and actions to topple the Congress government.

The Special Operations Group (SOG) team has been actively following the case with many proofs submitted by the ruling Congress, said officials, adding that the case was also registered against Sharma and Jain.

Joshi said that the party already had “subtle proofs” against the three accused as named in the audio clip. “We are going through the legal route,” he said.

Meanwhile, Shekhawat said: “The voice in the tape is not mine and I am ready for investigation.”

He also said that he is not in touch with Jain and Sharma and added that there are many people going by the name of Gajendra Singh in the state.

Earlier in the morning, Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala had called a presser and accused the BJP of trying to topple the Gehlot government by indulging in horse-trading.

Meanwhile, Deputy Leader of Opposition Rajendra Rathore said that there is no truth in the Congress claims. “All released audio clips have doctored voices,” he added.

Both BJP, Cong eyeing each other’s MLAs, leaders in MP

Ever since Shivraj Singh Chouhan returned as the Chief Minister more than three months ago, the Madhya Pradesh politics is in flux, with both the BJP and the Congress trying to woo each other MLAs and leaders.

Not only MLAs, but even their relatives are game for those out to poach politicians in the state, wherein the BJP seems to be at an advantage at present.

On March, 22 Congress MLAs resigned from the Congress along with former central minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, leading to the fall of the Congress government led by Kamal Nath.

Chouhan took oath on March 23 as the Chief Minister for record fourth term.

Madhya Pradesh Congress got another shock when its MLA Pradyuman Singh Lodhi resigned both from the party and from the Assembly membership.

Hours after he joined the BJP on Sunday, Pradyuman was made Chairman of the Civil Supplies Corporation in the rank of a Cabinet minister. Lodhi was a legislator from the Bada Malhera seat in Chhatarpur district.

Now, the ruling BJP is said to be eyeing Banda MLA Darbar Singh Lodhi and Damoh MLA Rahul Lodhi – both from the Congress and relatives of Pradyuman Singh Lodhi. The BJP could use the services of Pradyuman to try to woo them to the ruling camp.

It is another matter that both the MLAs have asserted that they are in Congress and will remain in Congress. Interestingly, both MLAs are also said to be close to former Chief Minister and former Union Minister Uma Bharti.

The BJP currently has 107 MLAs in the Assembly. With this, the Congress’ strength in the House has reduced to 91. There are now 25 vacant seats in the Assembly.

Agriculture Minister Kamal Patel claimed that many of the Congress MLAs were in contact with the ruling BJP since they were convinced that the future of the opposition party was dark.

Patel alleged that the Congress had made many promises during the last Assembly elections but failed to fulfill them on coming to power. Due to this, the writing on the wall was clear to the Congress leaders whom, he claimed, people were not even allowed to enter their constituencies.

Political analyst Arvind Mishra pointed out that neither ideology nor any principle guided the political party and hence all of them were busy making attempts to strengthen their respective organizations through whatever means they could.

Amid claims by the Congress that the BJP was busy in horse-trading to strengthen itself in Madhya Pradesh, the opposition party has made Chouhan’s brother-in-law Sanjay Singh Masani as the Vice-President of the state unit of the party and also the coordinator for campaigning during bye-elections for the vacant Assembly seats.

Political observers said that the coming days could witness more political crossovers since there were politicians who could not remain out of power for long and there were others who were worried over their future in the BJP.

Finau cards 66 to lead at the Memorial; Woods starts well, but lies 18th

0

It was Muirfield once again. For the first time in 63 years, the PGA TOUR has played consecutive weeks on the same course. But it may as well have been two different courses in different conditions.

The greens, which are going to be replaced after the ongoing Memorial, so Jack Nicklaus, whose course it is, feels fine to have them dying out. They are two feet faster on the Stimpmeter and the wind was strong and often changed direction all of a sudden. All that was seen in plenty on the scoreboard, as only seven players broke 70 – in comparison 35 players shot in the 60s last week.

Tiger Woods returned to the PGA TOUR after five months and returned one-under 71, which was really not too bad as he lay T-18 after the first round. Woods opened with a 10-foot birdie and finished with a 15-foot birdie.

But the man of the day was Tony Finau, who seemed to make all his putts. Finau had seven birdies over his last 10 holes and was one shot ahead of Ryan Palmer.

Woods said, “Got off to almost an ideal start and got a feel for the round early. I just didn’t make anything today. I had looked at birdies, but I really didn’t make much.”

Woods without crowds is an ‘unthinkable’ but these are different times. Playing with Rory McIlroy (70) and Brooks Koepka (72), the group still had the largest group of followers that comprised Television and radiomen, photographers, and some volunteers.

Woods opened with a birdie and had a second one on the third. Finau birdied half of his 18 holes. Opening with a birdie on first and adding two more on fifth and ninth, he dropped shots on third and eighth to turn in one-under. Beginning with the birdies on ninth, he birdied seven of his last 10 holes while dropping one shot on the 16th. Four of his last five holes produced birdies.

After two birdies and two bogeys on front nine, Woods birdied 15th and gave the shot back on 16th. He closed with a birdie to finish at one-under 71.

Bryson DeChambeau was his new long-hitting self. One of his drives went 423 yards. Of course, he had the wind at his back, but even then was very, very long. It left 46 yards to the pin on the first hole. Yet he managed only a 73.

Collin Morikawa winner at Muirfield Village last week with a score of 19-under 269, opened with a 76. Thomas, who did not have bogeys for the first three days last week, had two bogeys after two holes. He carded 74.

Dustin Johnson brought home shot 80 and Rickie Fowler had an 81.
After Finau at 66, there was Palmer at 67 while Gary Woodland and Brendan Steele were at 68 each. Jon Rahm was among those at 69 and defending champion Patrick Cantlay and Jordan Spieth scored 70 each. Maybe, it was just as well that Finau did not play last week, so he could not compare.

If we’re not good enough for LaLiga, how will we be for CL, asks Messi

0

With arch-rivals Real Madrid winning the LaLiga, Barcelona skipper Lionel Messi has made no bones about the fact that winning the Champions League will not be easy as the team needs to get a lot of things right if they have to do well against some of the best clubs across the globe.

“If we’re not good enough for LaLiga, how will be good enough for the Champions League?” Messi told Movistar+ after the game at Camp Nou as quoted by standard.co.uk.

Commenting on them losing out even after leading the board before the coronavirus enforced break, Messi said: “We didn’t want to finish like that but it is a mark of how the season has been: an inconsistent and very weak team. Other teams beat us in intensity and determination.

“Roma, Liverpool… the fans are losing patience because we’re not giving them anything. If we want to fight for the Champions League, we have to change many things. We need to be self-critical.

“I already said that if we carried on as we were, it wouldn’t be good enough in Europe. If we want to fight for the Champions League, we are going to need to change a lot.”

While handing away the lead to Real Madrid hasn’t gone down well with Messi, he wants the players to assess themselves and their performances and also get back to winning ways. “Madrid did what they had to do. Not losing since the break has a lot of merits.
