In a case of honor killing, a man was arrested along with his son for allegedly killing his 18-year-old daughter in Chaupai village in the Kandhai police circle on Wednesday.

The girl was in a relationship with local youth and the girl’s family did not approve of the same.

Kandhai SHO Bipin Kumar Singh said that the girl had recently returned home from Kanpur, where she had been studying.

“She left home on Tuesday night to meet the boy and returned home the following day.

The father, Suryamani, and brother Dhananjay Maurya thrashed her when they came to know that she had gone to meet the youth.

The SHO said that the accused also made a video while thrashing the girl.

“They forced her to name the youth and say that he had raped her thrice so that they could get a case registered against him. Suryamani and his son beat her with sticks and a belt,” the SHO said.

As the girl cried out for help, the villagers asked Suryamani to stop, but he continued beating the girl.

When the girl fell unconscious, her family took her to a nearby hospital, where the doctors declared her brought dead.

Suryamani also tried to mislead the police but the post-mortem report showed that the cause of death was strangulation.

Tough norms for Varanasi temples during ‘Saawan’

The holy city of Varanasi is gearing up to meet the rush of devotees during the month of ‘Saawan’ even as the coronavirus continues to spread.

With the holy month of ‘Saawan’ beginning on July 6, the district administration in Varanasi has warned that if any temple is found violating the guidelines of social distancing and checking crowding, the temple will be closed.

A huge number of devotees throng the various temples, particularly Shiva temples, including Kashi Vishwanath, during the auspicious month of ‘Saawan’.

District Magistrate, Kaushal Raj Sharma, has asked the police to increase vigil on roads and around temples and identify spots where safety protocols are being violated.

Sharma said, “If crowding and violation of prescribed guidelines for social distancing is found at any temple, the temple will be closed immediately. No devotee will be allowed to move out before 5 a.m to offer prayers. Wearing a mask, using sanitizer and following norms of social distancing will be mandatory.”

The District Magistrate has further ordered a two-hour drive, every morning, against those who violate the safety guidelines.

Devotees turn out in large numbers in the morning at the Ghats of Varanasi and in temples.

The officials have been directed to create awareness among people for the prevention of the spread of the virus through the police or hired vehicles.

The additional city magistrates have been asked to keep a sharp vigil on shops, market-goers, auto, and e-rickshaws to ensure that the norms of social distancing are maintained.

Guru Randhawa: It was good to perform after almost 3 months

With his gloves on and maintaining a safe distance from his audience, singer Guru Randhawa hit the stage after almost three months.

Live shows had been called off during the lockdown, which started in March, to battle the COVID-19 pandemic. And now as things are gradually returning to normal, Guru performed at a private show here.

“I performed after almost three months and it was a good experience. Though the audience was limited, they were very entertaining. We sang songs that we usually sing for our shows and earned as well,” Guru told IANS.

“In terms of precautions, my team and I tried our best to follow them. I was wearing gloves and my team was wearing masks and gloves. As per all social distancing measures, we tried our best to be safe and keep minimal contact,” he added.

He was also accompanied by fewer staff members. “It was just my manager and the band,” he said.

He thinks it’s safe to do such shows now.

“But times are such that one needs to take maximum safety measures. With avenues opening up and following all government social distancing guidelines, we should be able to do private live shows,” said the “Suit suit” hitmaker.

Virtual gigs had become a trend during the lockdown, but he said that once things get better, the usual live shows would be on.

Asked if he is going to do more private shows in the near future, Guru said: “If you talk about Indian artistes and their earnings, it majorly depends on live shows. So I have started doing live shows and I hope other artists who are getting an opportunity, should also do it because that’s the way forward.”

“With all the precautions, we were able to do it this time and hopefully, will try the same in future gigs,” he added.

During the lockdown, he might have stopped performing but he continued to give fresh music to his fans. He had released “Mueve La Cintura”, which is his first Spanish song with the international star Pitbull. The Punjabi pop sensation had also unveiled “Satnam Waheguru, a Soulful Meditation”.

New Zealand Health Minister David Clark on Thursday announced that he decided to resign and leave the cabinet amid criticism.

The surprise announcement came amid months of public outcry on Clark’s dereliction of duty during and after the country’s COVID-19 lockdown, reports Xinhua news agency.

Clark had planned to attend a ribbon-cutting event in Palmerston North for a cancer facility but made the surprise announcement at a press conference Thursday morning local time.

“It’s no secret that health is a challenging portfolio. I have given it my all. But it has become increasingly clear to me that my continuation in the role is detracting from the government’s overall response to the COVID-19 Global Pandemic,” Clark said in his public statement.

The resignation was accepted by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

He will stay on as an MP and take part in the upcoming election on September 19.

Clark was criticized for his poor handling of the managed isolation facilities where travelers arriving in New Zealand stay for 14 days to prevent the spread of COVID-19 into the country.

Two people with COVID-19 have reportedly left the managed isolation center earlier than expected and without being tested.

He also breached the lockdown rules by taking his family to the beach.

After not reporting any COVID-19 case for 24 days, New Zealand witnessed a spike in the number of cases late last month mostly travelers from abroad.

As of Thursday, the country reported a total of 1,530 cases, with 22 deaths.

Door-to-door COVID-19 survey underway in Taj city

0

The Agra district administration has begun an extensive exercise for door-to-door surveys in all areas to check the further spread of COVID-19. Two days ago, the state government had announced that all areas will be thoroughly screened to ensure the infection from the coronavirus was effectively stopped.

The survey began on Wednesday in the city and will cover the whole district by July 5.

Teams of health workers will visit homes and conduct surveys, thermal screening, and look for people with respiratory ailments. This exercise is considered necessary to reach out to people not only in the hotspots but also in remote areas of the district, who might be in the need of medical attention.

In the last 24 hours, 14 fresh corona cases were reported in Agra and 17 from Mathura.

The death toll in Agra stands at 88. The total number of cases till Thursday morning was 1,241. The recovery rate is 83.07 percent. The number of hotspots now is 52.

District Magistrate P.N. Singh said the markets would be permitted to remain open for an additional one hour in the evening.

In Mathura, the district administration has sealed the borders and deployed additional personnel to ensure no one entered the district for the annual Mudiya Poonau fair at Goverdhan. The five-day fair, which was supposed to begin from July 1 this year has been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Lionel Messi scored his 700th career goal

0

Lionel Messi scored his 700th career goal but Barcelona suffered another blow to their La Liga title hopes after a 2-2 draw with Atletico Madrid on Tuesday. Messi chipped in a penalty to reach another astonishing milestone at Camp Nou but twice Atletico hit back with spot-kicks of their own, Saul Niguez converting both after Barca took an early lead through Diego Costa’s own goal. The result gives Real Madrid the chance to move four points clear at the top of the table if they can overcome Getafe at home on Wednesday, a formidable lead with five games left. Atletico stay third, two points ahead of Sevilla, who won 3-0 at Leganes.

With a superior head-to-head, it would take a dramatic capitulation for Real Madrid not to lift the trophy from here but there is no guarantee Barcelona can finish strongly enough even to create pressure.

This was their third draw in four matches and with suggestions of disharmony between the players and coaching staff, the future of coach Quique Setien looks bleak too.

“From the dressing room I feel supported, yes,” he said. “And regarding the meeting with the board, I will not say what was said in that.”

Setien was also asked about his job on Monday and had to play down the significance of a frank exchange of views in the dressing room following Saturday’s draw at Celta Vigo.

Messi had also caused a stir by appearing to ignore Setien’s assistant Eder Sarabia during a water break at Vigo and on Tuesday it was impossible to ignore the contrast with Atletico’s players, who huddled around Diego Simeone while 50 metres away Setien stood alone.

At full-time, Setien stared into space with the look of a coach that is running out of time but he had taken bold decisions, leaving 120-million-euro signing Antoine Griezmann on the bench and handing another start to 20-year-old Riqui Puig.

“It’s true that taking him out of the team like that is hard for a player of his level but the circumstances forced me to do it,” said Setien of Griezmann. “Tomorrow I will speak to him, not to apologise, but it is a decision he has to understand.”

Yet it started well for them as Costa endured a nightmare first quarter of an hour, first diverting Messi’s corner into his own net after misjudging the flight of the ball at the near post.

Then he missed a penalty, won after the excellent Yannick Carrasco left Gerard Pique for dead and then cut back inside Arturo Vidal, who stuck out a leg.

Costa’s shot was saved but VAR showed Marc-Andre ter Stegen had sprung off his line too early and Atletico were given a second chance. This time Saul took the ball and he scored the equaliser.

Messi dinked over the sliding Renan Lodi and then whistled a curling effort past the far post. His deflected free-kick forced Jan Oblak to adjust his feet and palm over.

Finally, it was laid on a plate for him shortly after half-time. Felipe clipped Nelson Semedo and Messi, with the 700th in sight, chipped the ball delicately down the middle.

But every time Barca pulled away, Atletico pegged them back. Another penalty was awarded, again instigated by the speedy Carrasco, who made the most of the slightest touch from Semedo.

Saul took responsibility again and while Ter Stegen got a hand to it, the ball squirmed into the corner.Vidal twice went close, the second time heading wide Jordi Alba’s cross, and Thomas Lemar might even have won it for Atletico in injury-time. For Barca, the draw was damaging enough.

Earlier, Sevilla’s Oliver Torres scored twice and Munir El Haddadi added a third to see off Leganes and boost their hopes of holding onto fourth place.

Sevilla sit five points ahead of Getafe, having played a game more. Leganes stay 19th, nine points adrift of safety.

Pawan’s praise on Modi has drawn mixed reactions from his fans and party followers. While a section of people have welcomed Pawan’s praise for PM Modi, many others have questioned Pawan that why he is silent towards faults in PM Modi’s administration and Telangana CM KCR’s governance. As Pawan is not criticizing KCR, Pawan’s fans in Telangana have asked him why he is not uttering a word against KCR and his “mismanagement” in Covid crisis.

On the other hand, YCP activists are also criticising Pawan’s over praise to Modi and “surrendering” to BJP. Looks like, it’s not going to be easy to be a politician and Pawan seems to have learnt his mistakes that proved to be costly to him.

Google acquires AR eye wearable startup North

0

Google which gave up on its consumer eye wearable dream has acquired Augmented Reality (AR) smart glass startup called North for an undisclosed sum.

Canada-based North that is backed by Amazon and Intel launched the Focals 1.0 AR glasses in January last year.

These glasses connect to the user’s smartphone via Bluetooth and display key notifications like directions or calling an Uber directly in the wearer’s field of view.

Google said North’s technical expertise “will help as we continue to invest in our hardware efforts and ambient computing future”.

North will join the Google team based in Kitchener-Waterloo, Canada.

North, a pioneer in human-computer interfaces and smart glasses, has built a strong technology foundation.

After failing to impress people with the consumer edition of its $1500 Glass, Google last year brought the second edition of its eye-wearable device – Google Glass Enterprise Edition 2, with improved camera, USB-C type port, and safety frames.

The first Google Glass was introduced with much fanfare in 2014.

At $1,500, it promised a new, bold era for information.

People, however, realized the device was not yet ready to be part of their lives. There were safety and health concerns. The built-in camera raised privacy and piracy issues too.

Police men tried to intimidate a magistrate investigating the deaths

0

Superstar-politician Rajinikanth today joined the growing calls for punishing policemen blamed for the deaths in custody of a man and his son arrested for keeping their shop open longer than allowed during the coronavirus lockdown.

“They should not be spared,” Rajinikanth said, saying he was “shocked” that the policemen tried to intimidate a magistrate investigating the deaths.

“When everyone has condemned the torture and brutal killing of Jeyaraj and Beniks, I am shocked to see the conduct of a few policemen before the magistrate,” Rajinikanth said.

“The police reacted this way even after the whole humanity condemned the brutal and beastly killing of the father and son. All those involved in this case should be punished.”

The Madras High Court yesterday said policemen involved in the deaths could be charged with murder based on the post mortem report and ordered security for a constable who has recorded a statement as a witness to Jeyaraj and Beniks being beaten all night at the police station in Santhankulam with lathis .

Jeyaraj, 59, and his son Beniks, 31, were arrested on June 19 for keeping their mobile phone shop open 15 minutes beyond curfew in the coronavirus lockdown. After Jeyaraj was taken away by the police, his son, who reached the police station, was also arrested.

The two were allegedly beaten and tortured and suffered wounds so severe that they died on June 22, within hours of each other.

The constable who is a witness told the magistrate that both father and son were beaten with sticks through the night, so much that the sticks and tables in the vicinity were blood-stained.

Several celebrities, activists and politicians have expressed outrage at the custody deaths and have demanded tough action against the policemen involved

Gujarat govt decides to allow final year examinations

0

The Gujarat government, here on Wednesday, announced the decision to allow colleges and universities to conduct final year examinations. The Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has already declared dates for examinations, which will start from Thursday.

However, Congress has opposed the cabinet decision.

Education Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama said, “The SP University and the Teacher’s University conducted examinations last week. The GTU has announced examination dates. Gradually, other universities and colleges in the state will also conduct final year examinations.”

He said the GTU had conducted an opinion poll on its website on holding of examinations. Around 54,000 students replied in affirmative as they wanted to move on, get the certificates for jobs, or pursue higher education. Only 900 students opposed holding of examinations, he added.

The GTU would conduct examinations while maintaining social distancing, use of masks and sanitizers, and by making other arrangements across its 350 centers, Chudasama said.

The GTU has given the students three options — the classroom examinations that will begin on Thursday, online examinations, and special examinations to be held on improvement in coronavirus situation.

The students living in containment zones or those who are not willing to take classroom examinations can either go for online examinations or special examinations, the dates for which will be announced later. The online examinations will be held from July 21, as declared by the GTU earlier.

However, Congress has opposed the decision to conduct examinations and have demanded that the students be mass promoted.

“The corona crisis in Gujarat is out of control. More than 32,000 people have been infected and over 1,800 lost their lives. At such a time, the University Grants Commission (UGC) and various other committees, set up in different universities and colleges, recommended cancellation of all examinations and a merit-based progression. Despite this, the GTU has gone ahead. This is playing with the lives of students,” said Amit Chavda, Gujarat Congress president.

In the current situation, no examinations are conducted and all students should be mass promoted, Paresh Dhanani, Leader of the Opposition, told IANS.

Rural demand drives Hero MotoCorp sales of 4.5L units in June

0

Powered by growth from rural and semi-urban markets, Hero MotoCorp,
the world’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer has made wholesale deliveries of 4.50 lakh in June, which is 90 percent of the pre-COVID levels.

Hero MotoCorp said in a statement that it has led the revival of the domestic two-wheeler sector in the month of June with wholesale deliveries made to dealerships of over 450,744 units — a record sequential growth of four times over the 112,682 units dispatched in May’20.

“Considering these are unusual and highly disrupted times, it is appropriate and logical to compare the sales trajectory in the sequential months, and not with the corresponding month of the previous year”, the company said. In June of last year, it sold 6.16 lakh two-wheelers.

The company said the sales in the first quarter of FY’21 were subdued due to the impact of COVID-19 and the effects of the closure of the plant operations and the retail outlets throughout the entire month of April and most of May. Despite the challenging conditions, Hero MotoCorp sold a total of 563,426 units of motorcycles and scooters in the first quarter of Financial Year (April-June) 2020-21.

Pawan Munjal, Chairman & CEO –- Hero MotoCorp said, “We have demonstrated phenomenal leadership quality and tenacity to clock a sharp vertical growth in our sales at a time of massive disruption and uncertainty”.

“Sales of over 4.5 lakh two-wheelers in a highly disrupted month is also a clear signal of the resilience of the Indian economy to be able to revive in the face of any adversity. This has vindicated our strong belief in the robust fundamentals of the Indian economy”, Munjal added.

He added that a major part of the market demand is emanating from the rural and semi-urban markets, which have been helped to a large extent by the various stimulus packages rolled out by the government. A combination of multiple factors, including the forecast of a normal monsoon, a bumper Rabi crop and the upcoming festive season are expected to keep the momentum going over the next few months.”
