The Railways on Tuesday announced to cancel all train tickets booked for regular trains on or prior to April 14 and said that refunds will be generated for the same.

The Railway Board in an order dated June 22 said: “It has been decided that all train tickets booked on or prior to April 14 for regular timetabled trains should be canceled and full refunds generated.”

The railways had suspended the operation of all passengers, mail, and express trains from March 25 amid the nationwide lockdown to prevent the spread of novel coronavirus.

On May 14, the Railways had canceled all regular train tickets booked for travel till June 30 and decided on full refunds.

These tickets were booked during the lockdown period when the railways were allowing bookings for journeys in June.

The railways had introduced Shramik Special trains from May 1 to transport stranded migrant workers, pilgrims, students, and tourists.

The railways then launched 15 pairs of Special AC trains from May 12 and 200 timetabled trains from June 1.

US soldier accused of planning attack on own unit

A US soldier has been charged with terrorism offenses for planning a deadly ambush on his unit by sending information to a neo-Nazi group, a media report said on Tuesday.

According to the BBC report, Ethan Melzer, 22, stands accused of sending sensitive details about his unit to the Order of Nine Angles, which the Department of Justice calls it an “occult-based neo-Nazi and racially motivated violent extremist group”.

He was allegedly planning for information to be passed to jihadis, who would then carry out an attack.

His plan was thwarted late last month by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the US Army. He was arrested on June 10.

Private Melzer has been charged with conspiring and attempting to murder US nationals, conspiring and attempting to murder military service members, providing and attempting to provide material support to terrorists, and conspiring to murder and maim in a foreign country.

“As alleged, Ethan Melzer, a private in the US Army, was the enemy within,” the BBC quoted Audrey Strauss, acting US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, as saying in a statement on Monday.

“Melzer allegedly attempted to orchestrate a murderous ambush on his own unit by unlawfully revealing its location, strength, and armaments to a neo-Nazi, anarchist, white supremacist group.”

Members of the Order of Nine Angles have expressed admiration for both Nazis, such as Adolf Hitler, and Islamic jihadis, such as slain Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden, the statement said.

“Melzer declared himself to be a traitor against the US and described his own conduct as tantamount to treason. We agree,” said FBI Assistant Director William F. Sweeney Jr.

Man kills wife in B’luru, mom-in-law, self in Kolkata

0

In a gruesome act, a chartered accountant allegedly smothered his estranged wife to death in this tech city and killed his mother-in-law before shooting self in Kolkata on Monday, police said on Tuesday.

“On an alert from Kolkata police, we found the body of Shilpi, 36, near the kitchen in an apartment building in the city’s eastern suburb after we broke open the flat’s main door as there was no response from inside,’ Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP-East) N.M. Anucheth told IANS here.

The police registered a homicide case under section 302 of the IPC against the 42-year-old deceased accused, Amit Agarwal, who committed the crime on Sunday and flew to Kolkata on early Monday along with his 10-year-old son, staying with his mother.

“We have sent the body for autopsy to ascertain the cause of death. As there were no injuries on her body from any weapon, it appears the accused smothered her to death after a scuffle,” Anucheth recalled after visiting the crime spot.

The city police learned from their counterparts in Kolkata police that Agarwal went to Shipi’s parent’s house at Poolbagan locality after leaving the son with his brother in the eastern city and shot his mother-in-law Lalita Dhandhania, 62, dead before shooting self after a fight with the in-laws reportedly over the property.

Shilpi’s father Subhash Dhandania, 70, rushed out and bolted the house from outside and called the police with the help of neighbors.

“We also learned that the couple separated and filed for divorce. Shilpi was working in a private firm in the city and the son was staying with her while Agarwal was living separately after shifting to Kolkata,” said Anucheth.

The Kolkata police are reported to have found a suicide note at the scene of the crime in which Agarwal had confessed to having killed his wife in Bengaluru before flying to the city to kill her mother.

After 3 months, Bengal’s famous Tarapith temple welcomes devotees

0

After almost three months, West Bengal’s famous Tarapith temple has been thrown open on Tuesday for devotes with adequate precautionary measures in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to sources, the devotees will have to pass through a sanitizing channel, a long corridor that will spray sanitizers on all the outsiders who will enter the temple area. No one will be allowed inside the main shrine of the century-old temple.

The Tarapith temple committee had earlier announced that it would open its doors to devotees from June 15. But it was postponed by a week as the country witnessed a record rise in the number of Covid-19 cases.

Located in Birbhum district, the Tarapith temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas that attracts thousands of devotees from different parts of the country every day.

The temple remained closed after the nationwide lockdown was enforced in March after authorities had expressed concern over the health safety of priests and devotees, amid the rise in COVID-19 cases in the state.

PIA aircraft crashed due to human error: Report

0

The May 22 crash of a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) passenger plane in Karachi took place due to human error, the negligence of both the cockpit crew as well as the air control tower and not because of any technical fault, said a probe report.

There was apparently no technical fault in the aircraft, said the preliminary investigation report submitted to the Aviation Division in a high-level meeting on Monday, reports The Express Tribune.

PIA flight PK8303, carrying 99 people including eight crew members, crashed into a densely populated residential area near Karachi airport as it was making its second attempt to land.

Ninety-seven people perished in the accident that also caused considerable damage to the residential areas.

A day after the incident, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) had notified an investigation team headed by its Aircraft Accident and Investigation Board (AAIB) President Air Commodore Usman Ghani

The team was ordered to submit its preliminary report on June 22.

On Monday, Air Commodore Ghani gave a detailed briefing to the Aviation Division officials.

Black boxes from crashed PIA plane head to France for analysis

According to the report, the CAA officials, the cockpit crew, the control tower, and the air traffic control repeatedly made mistakes. Sources privy to the document said the aircraft’s black box has so far not indicated the possibility of any technical fault.

The report said both the speed and the altitude of the aircraft was more than the recommended parameters when the pilot tried first landing.

In the first landing, the aircraft touched the ground at the middle of a 9,000-metre long runway, The Express Tribune quoted the probe report as saying.

The control tower permitted landing despite the greater speed and altitude. The air traffic control also did not provide the control tower with the radio frequency.

The pilot also did not inform the control tower about jamming of the landing gears. It was a wrong decision on part of the pilot to attempt a second landing.

The plane stayed in the air for 17 minutes after the first landing attempt, a crucial time during which both the engines of the aircraft failed.

It said fragments of the PIA aircraft’s engine stayed on the runway for 12 hours but the air site unit did not collect them and later other aircraft were allowed to land on the runway. This was a violation of the standard operating procedure as it could cause damage to other aircraft.

According to the report the air traffic control officials should have been relieved after the incident but they continued to perform their duties till 7 p.m. It said the aircraft’s first engine was installed on February 25, 2019, while its second engine was installed on May 27, 2019.

Minister for Civil Aviation Ghulam Sarwar Khan Monday told the National Assembly that the interim report on the plane crash will be presented in the National Assembly on Wednesday.

He confirmed that he has received the report and also shared it with Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Diesel to surpass petrol prices for 1st time in India

0

In an unexpected development, the pump price of diesel is all set to surpass the petrol price in the capital, making it the most expensive transport fuel for the first time in a long time.

Globally, diesel is priced slightly above petrol prices due to the very nature of the product that has a higher cost of production. But in India, due to the lopsided taxation structure, diesel attracts lesser of the tax between the two auto fuels keeping its prices lower than petrol for the last several years.

Diesel is currently priced at Rs 79.40 a liter in the Capital, just 36 paise short of petrol price that is being retailed at Rs 79.76 a liter. Going by the trend of price movement in the two products for the last few days where diesel prices have consistently increased by 50-60 paise per liter while the daily increase in petrol prices has fallen to just 20 paise on Tuesday, it is set to surpass petrol prices in next few days.

“Diesel price movement is sharper in the international market and if oil companies follow the global price trend, diesel prices will surpass that of petrol later this week. It will be after many years that this would happen and is expected to sustain for some time unless the government changes the tax structure of the petroleum products again,” said an oil sector expert from one of the big four audit and advisory firms asking not to be named.

Interestingly, even in India, the base price of diesel is expensive than petrol. According to the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), while the base price of petrol in Delhi currently comes to Rs 22.11 per liter, the same for diesel is higher at Rs 22.93 per liter (effective from June 16, 2020). This has been the case for a long time, but the retail price of petrol can be higher than diesel due to central and state taxes.

What has now brought diesel prices to a whisker of petrol prices in the capital is the Delhi government’s decision early May to increase the Value Added Tax on diesel from 16.75 percent to 30 percent and on petrol from 27 percent to 30 percent. This increased the retail price of diesel and petrol in Delhi by Rs 7.10 and Rs 1.67 a liter respectively. With Central taxes on the two products already reaching identical levels, the Delhi governments move hastened price parity between petrol and diesel.

Currently, the Central excise on petrol is Rs 32.98 a liter while that on diesel it is Rs 31.83 a liter. The VAT on petrol in Delhi is Rs 17.71 a liter and that on diesel is Rs 17.60 a liter.

While the movement of retail pricing is being seen with a sigh of relief by vehicle owners whose cars run on petrol, those buying the relatively expensive diesel cars are now repenting on their decision. The development is also being seen with caution by automobile companies who have spent millions to ramp up their facilities for diesel-run vehicles. The expectation is that demand for such cars will now fall, causing more damage to companies where sales are already impacted due to persistent economic slowdown and now the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.

“The pricing development would push automobile companies to strategies being followed by companies in the western markets where diesel-run cars are not sold on fuel pricing differential, but on overall make and quality that puts them ahead of petrol run cars,” the expert quoted earlier.

Yes, but for the commercial vehicle sector, the rising price of diesel had not been welcomed. In fact, the commercial transport sector had time an again threatened strike against the move to raise fuel prices.

With petrol and diesel retail prices closing, the case for adultering fuel has also gone down much to the relief of vehicle owners.

75th anniversary of Battle of Okinawa commemorated

0

Amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Japan on Tuesday commemorated the 75th anniversary of the end of the Battle of Okinawa, which killed 200,000 people, half of them civilians.

The annual ceremony was held at the Peace Memorial Park in Itoman where the Battle of Okinawa between the US and Japan ended in 1945, and only those living in the prefecture were able to attend due to the pandemic, reports Efe news.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the mayors of the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and a UN representative were also scheduled to attend the event but restrictions imposed in the country to prevent the spread of COVID-19 meant that they could only be present through video messages sent for the occasion.

The Battle of Okinawa was the only ground invasion of the Japanese mainland by the US during World War II and it took place months before Japan surrendered following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The bloody battle lasted three months and killed one out of every four Okinawa citizens, around 94,000 in total.

Okinawa authorities usually use the anniversary as an opportunity to underscore the burden on the small archipelago, which is home to around 75 percent of the military facilities in Japan.

Military bases, which occupy one-fifth of the area of the main island, were built on land expropriated during the American occupation, which lasted until 1972, two decades longer than in the rest of the Asian country.

Abe’s administration has made plans to relocate one of the biggest US bases in the area to Nago city in Henoko Bay, in a less populated area, but also within Okinawa prefecture.

Okinawa authorities took the case to several courts to try to overturn the project with legal arguments based on on the grounds that it posed a threat to the area’s environment and might prove to be detrimental to the local population, but Japan’s Supreme Court ruled in Tokyo’s favor in 2016.

A majority of citizens of Okinawa are opposed to the relocation of the Futenma base from its present location and have asked that it be moved outside its territory.

The political bloc opposed to the relocation retained a majority in the prefectural assembly elections held earlier this month.

Railway Covid coaches get patients in UP district

0

The Uttar Pradesh government has started using the COVID-19 railway coaches, prepared by the Railways in the Mau district. So far 59 people, who tested corona positive, have been quarantined in these coaches while eight of them have even been discharged.

The isolation coaches are parked at the Mau railway station.

These non-air-conditioned coaches of the Indian Railways that have been modified into isolation wards to keep corona patients, now have 51 inmates.

The COVID isolation coaches are meant to be used when the health infrastructure of various states gets exhausted due to the sudden spike in Covid-19 cases across the country, the Railways had said earlier.

The Railways have so far received a demand for coaches from Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, and the Delhi government. The rest of the deployment will be done as and when states demand them, the Railways said.

Mau District Magistrate Gyan Prakash Tripathi said, “As many as 42 suspected Covid-19 positive cases on June 20, and 17 on Sunday were accommodated in these Covid-19 coaches at the Mau Junction.”

He said that these 59 people are those who had remained in contact with the confirmed COVID-19 cases and have been quarantined.

The Railways have so far deployed a total of 960 COVID Care Coaches in five states — Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh.

The isolation coaches will be under the complete care of the Chief Medical Officer of the state government in the states where they will be deployed.

In Uttar Pradesh, as many as 372 such isolation coaches have been stationed at 23 locations — Lucknow, Varanasi, Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Junction, Agra, Bhadohi, Kanpur, Saharanpur, Faizabad, Mirzapur, Jhansi, Jhansi Workshop, Nakha Jungle, Subedarganj, Gonda, Bhatni, Nautanwa, Bahraich, Manduadih, Farrukhabad, Varanasi City, Mau, Bareilly City, and Kasganj.

Tripathi said for the suspected cases, an institutional quarantine center had been created at the BR Ambedkar Degree College.

“But, as the universities are giving tentative dates for examinations and the campus had to be sanitized by June 24, the district administration decided to utilize the isolation coaches of the railway to quarantine suspected cases,” he said.

These coaches can be used for very mild cases that can be clinically assigned to the COVID care centers as per guidelines issued by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Acne-proof your skin for monsoon

0

The refreshing showers and the cool weather of monsoon will feel like bliss after the sweltering heat of summer. However, with the cool breeze and showers comes humidity packed with additional bacteria in the air leading to clogged pores resulting in acne, blackheads, and whiteheads. Before we enter the monsoon take steps to keep your skin blemish-free.

Acne is a common problem that troubles teens and adults alike. Get extra cautious this season. Dr. Satish Bhatia, MD, FAAD, Dermatologist, and Skin Surgeon share with IANSlife some useful handy tips which you can incorporate into your daily routine to keep your skin acne-free and supple during monsoons.

Cleanser alert

Forehead, neck, jawline, cheeks are acne-prone areas. Clean these zones thoroughly without rinsing too hard. Use a mild soap-free cleanser like Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser twice daily to wash your face. For oily or combination skin, use a cleanser best suited to the skin type.

Toning to the rescue

Tone your skin to remove the leftover dirt and makeup. Toning also helps in closing pores to avoid oil clogging. If you aren’t a fan of toners available in the market then use natural ingredients like green tea, lemon juice, rose water, cucumber water and

chamomile tea for toning your skin. Cucumber is a much-loved skin cooler that works wonder on all skin types.

Replenish your skin

From time to time, your skin may feel sticky and oily but that shouldn’t discourage you from using a moisturizer. Moisturizers keep the skin hydrated and supple. Choose a moisturizer that is lightweight, yet rich in macadamia oil and sunflower oil, which helps to hydrate and nourish the skin. Make sure it is specifically formulated to soothe dry skin and is non-greasy, non-irritating and non-comedogenic since this will eliminate clog pores. You can opt for Cetaphil Moisturising Cream.

Drink it up

It’s far more important to drink more water in monsoon and winter than summer since you won’t naturally feel as thirsty as you do during summers. It’s one of the most sure-shot ways to get healthy skin without any breakouts or acne.

Eat and exercise right

We cannot stress enough on the importance of refraining from eating fried food and exercising regularly. The excessive build-up of oil internally will reflect on your skin through breakouts, zits, blackheads, and whiteheads. To prevent it, consume a balanced diet. Additionally, exercising will ensure that you sweat out the toxins, stay in shape, and keep stress at bay especially on the gloomy monsoon days.

Courtroom Mahabharata on Kejriwal, Modi spat continues (Ld)

0

Almost a month after the Delhi government approved the appointment of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and other Central government counsel as Special Public Prosecutors in a case relating to the Delhi riots, the Delhi High Court was again witnessing to another battle of words between the lawyers of the Centre and the state as to who will represent the Delhi Police.

The Delhi government had last month appraised the high court that as per a communication dated May 29 issued by the Deputy Secretary, Home, Mehta, Additional Solicitors General Maninder Acharya and Aman Lekhi besides government counsel Amit Mahajan and Rajat Nair were appointed as special public prosecutors to represent Delhi Police in one of the riot cases.

On Monday, while the high court was hearing the bail application of Jamia Millia scholar and Jamia Coordination Committee member Safoora Zargar through video conferencing, Delhi government’s Standing Counsel (Criminal) Rahul Mehra clashed with the SG and Lekhi.

Objecting to the appearance of the two senior law officers on behalf of Delhi Police in the case, he stated that unlike another matter pertaining to the Delhi riots in which requisite approval was sought by the Delhi Police to be represented by the SG and his team, no such procedure was followed in the present case.

“I am an officer of the court and I am not supposed to be a mouthpiece of the police. They know that my approach in such a case would be more humanitarian and not according to their whims and fancies,” Mehra submitted.

In response, Lekhi said: “A client chooses the advocate, the lawyer can’t impose himself on the client.”

While the matter ended with the court posting the hearing on Tuesday, the fight also entered another courtroom where a separate matter connected to the said riots was being heard.

The next incident occurred before the court of Justice Suresh Kumar Kait, who was hearing an application filed by the police seeking cancellation of bail granted to Rajdhani school owner Faisal Farooqui who was among 18 people who were arrested in a case of rioting and for burning down an adjacent school in the area on February 24.

When the matter began, Mehta appeared for the Delhi Police, but, simultaneously Mehra too also entered his appearance and submitted before the court that the Central government has no power to file the present petition.

Responding to the same, Mehta submitted that he has received instructions from the Central government to file the present petition and to appear before this court. However, Mehra disputed this and the Solicitor General, “out of disgust” submitted before the court that in such a situation, he seeks permission to withdraw his name from the present case.

The court then renotified the matter for a later hour in the day to resolve the issue.

In the second half, Lekhi entered his appearance in place of Mehta, and APP Amit Chadha appeared in place of Mehra, who was appearing in another court.

Chadha told the court that the controversy will be resolved during the course of the day and jointly sought an adjournment, following which the court also posted the matter for Tuesday.

This isn’t the first time the counsel of both governments is at loggerheads. In March, the never-ending tussle between the Centre and the Delhi governments was in full display inside the high court over the same issue.

The debate had led to a heated argument between Mehra and Additional Solicitor General Maninder Kaur Acharya when the former submitted that he is the designated counsel to represent Delhi Police in the case.

Mehra had also said that he has not been issued any written intimation about Acharya in this regard. “I deserve this much dignity. If you route it through my office, I would cooperate. In three cases, I withdrew on request.”

As at this, the ASG commented: “He has a bit of a politician in him”, Mehra, objecting strongly to the statement, replied: “I am an officer of the court. I won’t make such statements. ASG should take back her words.”

The bench asked the two lawyers to calm down and said: “Put your house in order by the next date of hearing.”

On February 27, Lt Governor Anil Baijal appointed Mehta, Acharya, and few others to represent Delhi Police in the matters relating to the violence that erupted on February 23.

While this year, it was the Delhi riots that became the cause of “Mahabharata” between the Modi and Kejriwal government, back in 2016, former JNUSU President and left leader Kanhaiya Kumar and his case regarding the seditious remarks became the reason of the rift.

As soon as the hearing on Kanhaiya Kumar’s bail plea commenced before a bench of Justice Pratibha Rani, Mehra opposed the appearance of then ASG Mehta, ASG Sanjay Jain, and others. Mehra said that he was a senior standing counsel appointed by the full court reference of the High Court and if there was no notification empowering the ASGs to appear in the matter, they cannot represent the state.

“If they don’t have the notification, they can’t stand on their legs before this court,” Mehra said. ASG Jain had then responded: “Once the ASGs are appearing in this matter, you have no business to interfere in it.”

Mehra, then in rage, said: “They have crossed the ‘Laxman Rekha’ and I will not allow this unless the court passes an order. I am appointed by the full court reference of this court. As a senior standing counsel, I am not allowed to argue in the matter and they are here on LG’s unofficial order.”

Apple reimagines iPhone, iPad, Watch experience with iOS 14

Introducing its biggest update ever in iOS 14 for iPhones and other major updates across product portfolio like iPad, Watch and Mac, Apple CEO Tim Cook kicked off the virtual WWDC 20 developer conference with addressing two major events that are shaping our lives: The Black Lives Matter movement and the Covid-19 pandemic.

Cook said: “Our mission has always been to make the world a better place. And we’re committed to being a force for change.” He added that it’s time for the nation to “aim higher to build a future that lives up to our ideals” of equality.

The next major version of iOS is set to be released later this year and the most visual change is that the home screen will now have widgets.

With this, Cook announced iOS 14, the biggest update ever to Home Screen pages with beautifully redesigned widgets and the App Library, a new way to tap into the App Store with App Clips, powerful updates to Messages, and more.

Home Screen pages can display widgets that are customized for work, travel, sports, entertainment, and other areas of interest.

At the end of the Home, Screen pages are the App Library, a new space that automatically organizes all of a user’s apps into one simple, easy-to-navigate view.

With iOS 14, incoming FaceTime and phone calls and Siri interactions take on an all-new compact design that enables users to stay in the context of what they are doing. With Picture-in-Picture support, iPhone users can now watch a video or make a FaceTime call while using another app.

“iOS 14 transforms the most iconic elements of the iPhone experience, starting with the biggest update we’ve ever made to the Home Screen,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering.

iPhone users will be able to pin conversations to the top of their messages list.

Apple also previewed iPadOS 14, with new features and designs that take advantage of the unique capabilities of iPad and its large Multi-Touch display.

iPadOS 14 introduces an all-new compact design for incoming FaceTime and phone calls, Siri interactions, and Search to help users stay focused on the task at hand.

iPadOS 14 brings Scribble to iPad with Apple Pencil, allowing users to write in any text field – where it will automatically be converted to typed text – making actions like replying to an iMessage or searching in Safari fast and easy.

The company also announced a new watchOS7 that delivers enhanced customization tools and powerful new health and fitness features to Apple Watch.

The Apple Watch will have new watch face configurations and health features like sleep tracking, automatic handwashing detection, additional workout types including dance, and a new hearing health feature.

African-Americans were nearly four times more likely than the US’ white population to be hospitalized with COVID-19, according to federal data.

African-Americans with Medicare, a national health insurance program, accounted for 465 coronavirus hospitalizations per 100,000 enrollees, data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) revealed on Monday.

That is nearly four times the rate for whites, which was 123 per 100,000 enrollees, according to Xinhua news agency quoted the data as saying.

The rate for Hispanics stood at 258 hospitalizations per 100,000, about twice the rate of whites, while Asians were about one-and-a-half times more likely to be hospitalized for COVID-19, the data showed.

“It reconfirms long-standing issues around disparities and vulnerable populations,” said Medicare administrator Seema Verma.

“Race and ethnicity are far from the only story.”

More than 325,000 people on Medicare were diagnosed with COVID-19 between January 1 and May 16, and 110,000 people on Medicare were hospitalized with a COVID-19 diagnosis this year through May 16, according to the data.

Medicare payments for fee-for-service hospitalizations totaled $1.9 billion, with an average cost of $23,094 per hospitalization, the CMS said.

Medicare has 60 million enrollees across the US, most of whom are aged 65 or older.

Also covered are younger people who qualify because of disabilities.

US restricts India charter flights over ‘discriminatory practices’

The US has restricted charter flights from India, accusing New Delhi of engaging in “discriminatory and restrictive practices”, a statement by the Department of Transportation (DoT) said.

In the statement on Monday, the Department said that a foreign air carrier of India “will be required, effective 30 days after the service date of this Order, to obtain prior approval from the Department in the form of a statement of authorization before operating any Third and/or Fourth Freedom charter flights to or from the US”.

“We are taking this action because the government of India has impaired the operating rights of US carriers and has engaged in discriminatory and restrictive practices with respect to US carrier services to and from India,” it added.

Air India is currently the only foreign air carrier of India that holds the Department authority to conduct operations to/from the US with its own aircraft and crew.

The Department further said that “this restrictive and discriminatory treatment of US carriers as regards charters has important implications in the area of scheduled operations as well”.

The DoT also alleged that the Indian government has “imposed restrictions that prevent US air carriers from making full use of these charter rights” according to the statement.

Washington however, has “not placed any limitations on US–India charter operations and Air India has been and remains free to conduct the full complement of passenger charter services”.

On March 25, the Indian government had suspended all scheduled passenger services in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Monday’s development comes after the Department restricted Chinese airlines from flying into the US.

The COVID-19 deaths continue to rise unabated in Agra, touching 79, even as health workers are leaving no stone unturned in the fight against the pandemic.

According to the health officials, for the past several days, the district has been reporting two COVID-19 deaths daily. Till Tuesday morning the toll touched 79, as two senior citizens succumbed to the contagion.

In a large number of cases, patients admitted to the COVID hospital in their critical phase collapsed within two days, a random audit of death figures revealed.

With eight new cases, the cumulative COVID-19 count in Agra has climbed to 1,147. So far, 953 people have been discharged after recovery. The number of active cases was 116, officials said.

Health authorities said that apparently a large chunk of deaths due to the coronavirus was the result of a delay in admitting patients to hospitals for treatment.

Officials on Tuesday morning indicated a shift in their strategy with increased participation of the private medical infrastructure which many thoughts were the need of the hour.

“The patients should be tested fast and treated at the earliest,” a doctor said.
