155 Indian cos have over $22 bn investments in US: Report

0

A total of 155 companies with origins in India are responsible for generating over $22 billion in investments and nearly 1.25 lakh jobs in the US, according to a report by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

The report titled ‘Indian Roots, American Soil 2020’ showed that the states with the top concentrations of Indian companies reporting were New Jersey, Texas, California, New York, Illinois and Georgia.

The corporate social responsibility (CSR) and research and development expenditure of the companies stood at $175 million and $900 million, respectively.

Texas, California, New Jersey, New York, and Florida are home to the greatest number of workers in the US directly employed by the reporting Indian companies.

The surveyed companies disclosed the highest amounts of foreign direct investment (FDI) were in Texas, New Jersey, New York, Florida, and Massachusetts.

Indian investments in 20 US states stand at over $100 million each, showed the survey.

Around 77 per cent of the companies plan to make more investments in the world’s largest economy and 83 per cent of the companies plan to hire more employees locally in the next five years.

The CII survey respondents are from sectors including pharmaceuticals, telecommunications, aerospace and defense, financial services, manufacturing, tourism and hospitality.

Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General, CII, said: “The survey results show that the US is a preferred investment destination for Indian companies which are contributingsignificantly to supporting local jobs. The results in the survey capture a snapshot in time, documenting tangible investments and direct jobs only, so Ibelieve that the actual economic impact of Indian FDI in the US is much larger.”

He further said that it is critical that the US government continues to provide a supportive policy environment for Indian companies to flourish and enhance their operations in the US, especially to aid economic recovery at this time.

Assam plans 50,000 tests, new strategy to handle Covid-19

0

With coronavirus infections on the rise, ahead of the formulation of new strategies, the Assam government has decided to launch the Assam Targeted Surveillance Programme (ATSP) on Wednesday to randomly test 50,000 samples in 11 days, according to officials here on Tuesday.

Assam Principal Secretary (Health and Family Welfare) Samir Kumar Sinha said the random testing under the ATSP would be conducted in four categories of people.

In his order, which was tagged to the twitter handle of Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Sinha said under the ATSP, random testing of people and workers involved in truck parking, loading and unloading of goods, including railway goods and godowns, would be conducted.

Similar random testing would be conducted on all frontline district officials, including health workers, police personnel, officials of the transport department and the district administration, those associated with Covid-19 management, hotel staff and family members of people released from the institutional quarantine centres.

Earlier, the Health Minister said if a sizable number of positive cases were found after testing 50,000 samples, several stringent measures, including total lockdown, would be re-imposed in Guwahati and other vulnerable places.

“The new strategies are being considered to check the coronavirus spread in Assam,” Sarma said.

Assam has tested 2.20 lakh samples and found 4,319 Covid-19 cases. It has now 2,103 active cases. While 2,205 patients have recovered, eight people, including a 16 years-old girl, died.

Assam’s neighbour Mizoram, which has inter-state borders with Covid-19-hit Tripura and Manipur, on June 8 re-imposed lockdown for two more weeks to curb the coronavirus spread following return of natives from different parts of the country.

Of the eight northeastern states, only Mizoram was a green state until June 1 as the state, bordering Myanmar and Bangladesh, became Covid-19 free after its lone patient recovered on May 9.

However, with the return of thousands of natives from southern and western states, Mizoram’s Covid-19 cases climbed to 121 in two weeks. All the 120 new cases (after one recovered) are active.

BJP MP seeks judicial probe into Sushant Singh’s death

0

Even as the Mumbai police investigate the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey has demanded a judicial probe into the case, alleging a deep-rooted conspiracy behind the actor’s death.

Speaking to IANS, Dubey said he was distressed by Sushant’s death, adding that people of Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh were meted out step-motherly treatment by the Mumbai film industry. Those who go to Bollywood for acting from these areas are abused and discouraged, he alleged.

They are either forced into begging or are abetted to commit suicide, which is proved beyond doubt by Sushant Singh Rajput’s death, he said.

Nishikant Dubey also alleged that the syndicate in the Mumbai film industry works even in the absence of Dawood, where children of actors and film producers are promoted. He appealed to the Maharashtra government to investigate who were the people sabotaging the film career of Sushant Singh?

The entire film industry, he said, is run by the people of Purvanchal. He, therefore, appealed to the people of Purvanchal who are engaged in Bollywood to come forward and form a separate film industry.

Actor Sushant Singh Rajput committed suicide in Mumbai on Sunday and was cremated on Monday in presence of his family members and people from the film industry.

Meanwhile, the Mumbai police has been investigating to find out the reason behind his death and the probe, the police say, covers all angles.

New rules let US companies work with Huawei on 5G standards

0

The US Commerce Department has paved the way for US companies to work with Huawei on developing 5G standards, despite rules that prohibit the Chinese telecom giant from doing certain commercial transactions with American firms.

The amended rules are applicable “in legitimate standards development contexts only, and not for commercial purposes,” the US Commerce Department said on Monday.

“The United States will not cede leadership in global innovation. This action recognizes the importance of harnessing American ingenuity to advance and protect our economic and national security,” US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said in a statement.

“The Department is committed to protecting US national security and foreign policy interests by encouraging the US industry to fully engage and advocate for US technologies to become international standards.”

Alleging that China could use Huawei technology for spying purposes, the US government added the company to the Entity List on May 16, 2019, to limit Huawei’s access to US technology.

New export control rules announced last month prevent chip-makers that use US technology and software in chip design from shipping to Huawei without permission of the US government.

In its statement on Monday, the US Commerce Department said that the amendment is “meant to ensure Huawei’s placement on the Entity List in May 2019 does not prevent American companies from contributing to important standards-developing activities despite Huawei’s pervasive participation in standards-development organizations.”

“In amending the Huawei Entity Listing, the rule promotes U.S. national security and foreign policy interests by facilitating U.S. leadership in standards development bodies,” it added.

International standards serve as the critical building blocks for technological development by enabling functionality, interoperability, and safety.

With its focus on research and development, Huawei has emerged as a global leader in developing 5G standards.

Andhra Pradesh ahead of others in conducting COVID-19 tests: Governor

0

Andhra Pradesh government has taken effective steps in containing the spread of COVID-19 and it stands ahead of other states in the number of tests conducted so far, Governor Biswa Bhusan Harichandan said on Tuesday.

In his address to both the Houses of the state legislature on the first day of the budget session, he claimed that various measures taken by the government have helped Andhra Pradesh achieve a low mortality rate, a low positivity rate and a much higher recovery rate than most of the states.

The Governor noted that from just one lab the government increased the number of testing labs to 13. About 15,000 tests are being conducted per day and it tops the national average among the states by conducting over 5.5 lakh tests and more than 10,000 tests per million.

The mortality rate of the state is much lower than that of the national average and recovery rate is higher than the national average, he said.

Amid unprecedented measures, the budget session began on Tuesday with the Governor addressing both the Houses through video conferencing from Raj Bhavan.

“There are five dedicated COVID-19 hospitals and 65 hospitals in districts earmarked as dedicated COVID-19 facilities. We have 38,000 isolation beds, 15,000 equipped with oxygen supply and 5,400 ICU beds of which 1,300 have ventilator facility,” he said.

About 24,000 doctors and 24,500 paramedical staff are working round the clock in affected areas.

He claimed that APSRTC buses and Shramik special trains were utilized to transport over 3.2 lakh stranded workers to their homes, both in AP and in other states, free of cost.

“The government firmly believes that we have to live with Corona in the coming days and have opened up the economy keeping the safety norms as the wheels of the economy have to roll on,” he added.

Harichandan claimed that the government has done exceptionally well in social justice and bringing welfare schemes to the intended sections, brought in sweeping reforms in administration, improved the health care system manifold, instilled confidence among farmers, and has taken measures to revamp schools and hospitals.

The government spent Rs 42,000 crore benefitting 3.98 crore people under various schemes during the year.

The Governor said that the government fulfilled 90 per cent of the promises made in the manifesto in the first year itself and it was taking the state on the welfare path.

He said the state’s economy showed tremendous resilience within the context of a global slowdown, even in pre-COVID-19 times. The state has registered an economic growth rate of 8.16 per cent in 2019-20. This was above the national average of 5 per cent.

Services sector registered the highest growth rate of 9.1 per cent, followed by agriculture and allied sectors at 8 per cent and industry at 5 per cent.

The per capita income, measured at current prices, increased by more than 12 per cent from Rs 1,51,173 in 2018-19 to Rs 1,69,519 in 2019-20.

The government turned a new leaf in ushering in unprecedented reforms and rolling out the welfare carpet to doorsteps of the deprived sections by empowering them economically, politically and socially.

“We have put in place an impeccable delivery mechanism of welfare schemes in the form of village and ward secretariats.”

He said the concept not only redefined and gave a new look to villages but also provided four lakh jobs -2.65 lakh volunteers and 1.35 lakh secretariat staff

He claimed that the socio-economic ecosystem of the villages is changing. “What you see on entering a village is a secretariat where 541 different services with timelines for each service from ration card onwards will be available.”

The Governor said the government was striving to operationalize Visakhapatnam-Chennai Industrial Corridor and Chennai-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor. This will strengthen connectivity and existing industries such as textiles, pharma, food processing and also allow for setting up of new ones.

It also expedited construction of Bhogapuram international airport in Vizianagaram and completion of airport at Orvakallu, Kurnool. The government has already entered into Rs 2,300 crore partnership agreement with GMR Airports Limited to develop the Bhogapuram airport.

Stating that Andhra Pradesh has the second longest coast, stretching 974 kms, the Governor said the government sees an opportunity to transform our state into a maritime trading hub for South East Asia.

“We intend to strengthen six ports and take up construction of three new ports at Ramayapatnam, Machilipatnam and Bhavanapadu. Eight fishing harbours will be constructed in three years at a cost of Rs 3,200 crore,” he added.

We have an excellent run and want to continue our winning streak: Hansi Flick

Bayern Munich coach Hansi Flick wants his side to “seal the deal” and wrap up an eighth consecutive Bundesliga title on Tuesday with victory at relegation-threatened Werder Bremen.

Top scorer Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Mueller, one shy of the record for assists in a single season, are both available again after missing Bayern’s 2-1 win over Borussia Moenchengladbach due to suspension. Victory at Bremen, where Bayern have won all 12 games over the last decade, will clinch a record-extending 30th league title, and the first leg of a potential treble in Flick’s debut season in charge.

“We want to finish the job on Tuesday. That is our goal. We have an excellent run and want to continue our winning streak,” said Flick, who stepped in when Niko Kovac was sacked last November.”The target is to win again in Bremen. We want to just seal the deal.”

Bayern have won their last 10 league games and another victory on Tuesday would leave them an unassailable 10 points clear before second-placed Borussia Dortmund, who have three matches left, host strugglers Mainz on Wednesday.

“It’s our plan to bring it  back home,” said midfielder Leon Goretzka.Lewandowski, the league’s leading scorer with 30 goals this term, netted twice while Mueller, who is sitting on 20 assists, also got on the scoresheet when Bayern thrashed Bremen 6-1 when the sides met in December.

Poland star Lewandowski has struck 45 goals in all competitions this campaign and needs one more to establish a new Bundesliga personal best, having also reached the 30-goal plateau in 2015-16 and 2016-17.

Despite laboured displays in their last two games, including a 2-1 semi-final win over Frankfurt in the German Cup, Bayern have a legitimate shot at landing a second treble in seven years.

First, Bayern, who are also well within reach of the Champions League quarter-finals, must take care of a Bremen side fighting for Bundesliga survival.Bremen have taken 10 points from a possible 18 recently, boosting their hopes with a 5-1 rout of bottom side Paderborn on Saturday, but head coach Florian Kohfeldt played down any talk of an upset.

“There’s no reason to go into this with any kind of euphoria. We haven’t won anything yet and we’re still in a relegation zone,” said the 37-year-old Kohfeldt, who has lost all five games against Bayern. The Portugal international has struck a rich vein of form since the season’s resumption, with a return of six goals in seven appearances — more than any other player in the league.

The 24-year-old striker is rebuilding his young career while on loan in Germany, after struggling with AC Milan following a big-money move from Porto in 2017.He has scored 10 times in 22 Bundesliga appearances with Eintracht, and came off the bench to net twice and grab an assist in Saturday’s 4-1 win at Hertha Berlin.
