If it were to happen, it would be great: Markram on SA captaincy

0

South Africa cricketer Aiden Markram has thrown his hat into the ring as far as South Africa’s next Test captain is concerned, but doesn’t wish to get distracted by the thought. Faf du Plessis stepped down from the role earlier this year and the Proteas are currently on the look out for his successor.

When asked about his ambition of leading the team, Markram had a mixed bag reaction. He said while the prospect of leading the national team excites him, he doesn’t want to think too much about it.

“I have never given captaining my country too much thought,” Markram was quoted as saying by sport24.co.za.

“It’s always been a shot in the dark for me. But now that my name is in the hat for people who are writing news so to speak, it’s nice to be considered.

“I’d love to do it and I’d probably even give an arm and a leg to do it,” he added.

Markram led South Africa against India in the last five ODIs of the six-match series in 2018 in the absence of Du Plessis and AB de Villiers. The Proteas were thumped by Virat Kohli’s troops 5-1 in the series.

Despite going through some tough times as captain, Markram said he likes the responsibility that comes along with the role and will be happy to take it up if it were to come his way.

“From a personal perspective, I really enjoy captaincy and the responsibility associated with it,” Markram said.

“I’ve been able to watch and learn from various franchise captains as well as someone like Faf.

“If it were to happen (being named captain) it would be great, but if not, there are plenty of strong leaders in the group that would definitely take the team forward.”

Conditions for increasing borrowing limits not fair: Kerala CM

0

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday expressed his displeasure at the way certain conditions have been set when Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman raised the borrowing limits of states from 3 percent to 5 percent of GDP for the financial year 2020-21.

“The Centre is borrowing 5.5 percent of the GDP but when it came to states, conditions are being placed. This is against the federal structure and is not fair,” said Vijayan.

He said currently states can borrow only three percent and were the first to demand a hike in the borrowing limit to 5 percent.

“To increase the borrowing limit from 3 to 3.5 percent is allowed for all, with no conditions. But from 3.5 to 4.5 percent there have been four conditions. This is not acceptable, anyway, we are waiting for more details on it,” said Vijayan and added that if conditions are being set then Kerala will only be able to borrow Rs 4,500 crore.

He also pointed out that hiving off public sector enterprises and limiting key sectors is not going to strengthen the country in any way and Kerala will not toe such a line.

“From the Rs, 20 lakh crore financial package that has been announced not even 5 percent of it is reaching the people, while Rs 1.5 lakh crore have been given as tax relief for corporates. Still, there is no word on the allocation for public health,” said Vijayan.

Analysts to track investor, promoter action as Damani stake in ICEM now 20%

0

Analysts will watch out for future course of action from the investor group and promoters as marquee investor, Radha Kishan Damani has increased the equity stake in N. Srinivasan’s India Cements to just under 20 per cent.

India Cements (ICEM) has submitted its latest shareholding pattern for quarter ending March 2020 to the stock exchanges. Accordingly, prominent investor R.K. Damani with his family members have raised stake in India Cements from 4.73 per cent at the end of 3QFY20 to around 20 per cent by end-4QFY20. The stake increase has been through purchase of shares from open market.

Centrum Broking, in a research note, said that three possible scenarios can play out with the first one being that the investment by the investor continues to increase and reaches the threshold 25 per cent which will trigger an open offer.

In the second scenario, India Cements promoter hikes the stake from current 28 per cent to mid-30 per cent including other strategic investment to take the stake to the dominant holding levels surpassing 50 per cent,

According to Centrum Broking, the third scenario includes other strategic action by the promoters.

In all these scenarios, the stakes will be increased by either turbulence in the market or pre-set valuations at higher levels.

“These actions will keep the valuations higher except if the current investor remains to be a value investor as indicated by the management during our interaction,” Centrum Broking said.

“We will follow the investor/promoter action diligently and update accordingly. However, it will be a complete disconnect with the fundamentals of the company as the valuation movement is triggered by investor/promoter action and not by any strategic operational or financial change,” it added.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, here on Monday, said 29 new coronavirus cases in the state had raised the number of people under treatment to 130. “Of these, 21 came from abroad, 7 from other states,” Vijayan said.

Stating that 630 people have tested coronavirus positive in the state, the Chief Minister said 67,316 people were under observation in homes and 473 in hospitals.

The total hotspot areas have risen to 29.

On lockdown easing, Vijayan said, “The public transport will be allowed within the district and in buses only 50 percent seating capacity will be permitted. No standing travel is allowed. The same applies to water transport.

“Private vehicles and taxi can take three persons, including the driver, if with family then 4. Auto-rickshaws will be allowed but with only one commuter. In case of family, it can be three, including the driver. People above 65 years and children below 10 years should stay indoors as much as possible.”

He said malls would not be allowed, but the shopping complexes could function with only 50 percent shops opened. Salons could do only hair cutting and only 2 persons would be allowed in the shop. “Restaurants can open till 9 pm but only for parcel service,” said Vijayan.

He said all government offices should function with only 50 percent employees. The rest should work from home, he added.

“If required by the head of the office, such people should come to office. Saturday’s will not be working day until further notice,” said Vijayan and added the government employees stranded elsewhere must report to the District Collector concerned and work from there only.

For marriages only 50 people will be allowed, and for funeral services 20.

With more NRKs and Keralites stranded in other states arriving every day, the number of Covid-19 cases is rising.

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhara Rao’s demand

0

Finally, Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhara Rao’s demand has been heeded and the Centre has increased the Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management (FRMB) Act permit to the states. The relaxation of the norms will help the state borrow more loans so that it can take up development schemes.

While speaking about Lockdown 4.0, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared Rs 20 lakh crore package under the Atma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan which would act as a stimulus scheme for various sectors that faced the brunt of the shutdown.

Detailing about the package, Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the loan limit for states was increased to 5 per cent from the present 3 per cent of GSDP. She also made it clear that there would be no conditions to increase the loan limit to 3,5 per cent from the present 3 per cent.

However, there will be some conditions applicable to increase the loan limit from 3.5 per cent to 5 per cent. This relaxation will allow states to borrow an additional Rs 4.28 lakh crore.

She said that the Centre would also extend all the necessary help to the states to tode over the Covid-19 crisis. She added that SDRF funds to the tune of Rs 11,092 crore have already been kept available for the states.

This apart, the states will also be provided the facility to take overdrafts to pay the salaries of government employees. The time limit to draw the overdraft has also been extended to 52 days. She also said that allocation of Rs 46,000 crore was done as part of tax income to the states.

When the National Institution for India (NITI) Aayog members called up KCR recently, he told them that the FRBM guidelines for raising funds through borrowings for revenue surplus states, should be on par with the Centre. Rao told them that this relaxation will enable the state invest in improvement of infrastructure to bring momentum to economic growth. He demanded that Telangana should be allowed to borrow loans up to 3.49 per cent of GSDP against the existing limit of less than 2.7 per cent.

In the wake of the Covid-19 lockdown, the economy of many countries was hit badly and India is no exception. Even before India declared lockdown, Telangana CM KCR had complained of the state’s economy in a very bad state due to recession, declaring it in the Budget session.

Virat Kohli is world’s best batsman in current generation of cricketers

0

Former Australian captain Ian Chappell feels India skipper Virat Kohli’s penchant for playing copybook cricketing shots and his incredible fitness make him the world’s best batsman across formats among the current generation of cricketers. “Of that group (including Steve Smith, Kane Williamson, Joe Root), Kohli is the best in all three forms. That’s unquestionable,” Chappell said on ‘The RK Show’, which is hosted by Radhakrishnan Sreenivasan on YouTube. “His record in all three forms is quite unbelievable, particularly his record in the shorter forms.”

Chappell’s comments come after former England batsman Kevin Pietersen said that Australia’s batting mainstay Smith was nowhere close to Kohli.Kohli, who has scored 70 international hundreds and more than 20,000 runs, averages more than 50 in all three formats.

Explaining his reasons on why he feels Kohli is the best, Chappell said: “I like his approach to batting. We did an interview with him last time India were in Australia, and one of the things he talked about was why he didn’t play the fancy shots, the innovative shots of particularly T20 cricket.

“He said he didn’t want those to creep in his batting in the longer form of the game. The best short-form player in the time I played was Viv Richards, and he just played normal cricket shots but he placed the ball so well he was able to score at a very fast rate. And Kohli’s the same. He plays traditional cricket shots, and he plays them really well.”

The Australian said Kohli’s fitness also makes him stand apart from his contemporaries.”The other thing that stands out about Kohli is his fitness and running between the wickets. The way he pushes himself, he’s incredibly fit. Some of his performances are quite amazing,” said Chappell.

Chappell also expressed his admiration for Kohli’s captaincy.”The one thing that stands out to me is that Kohli is the one (captain) that doesn’t fear defeat. He’s prepared to lose a game in trying to win it. You’ve got to be that way as a captain in my opinion. I like that approach.

“I thought when he took over the captaincy that he was so emotional, it might affect his captaincy adversely but I think he has reined that in a little bit. He has made that work for him in his captaincy rather than work against him. He’s a pretty smart cricketer,” the legendary skipper said.

Ahmed said Babar Azam needs to improve his English

0

Babar Azam’s rise was further reaffirmed when the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) appointed him the captain of the ODI and T20I teams last week. Babar Azam has been Pakistan’s most prolific batsman in recent times. His meteoric rise in the past year or so has seen climb to the top of the ICC Men’s T20I Rankings, while he is also highly-placed in ODI (3rd) and Test (5th) rankings as well. Former Pakistan pacer Tanvir Ahmed, however, feels scoring runs and leadership skills are not the only things that make a good captain.

Tanvir Ahmed, who played five Tests, two ODIs and a T20I for Pakistan, came up with a bizarre list of things that Babar Azam needs to work on, to become a complete captain.

In a video posted by Saj Sadiq, a Pakistani cricket writer, Ahmed said Babar Azam needs to “improve his English, work on his personality and change his dressing sense”.

A massive crowd of migrants gathered at a ground in Ghaziabad

0

A massive crowd of migrants gathered at a ground in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad on Monday to try and get on special trains to take them home.Physical distancing was tossed aside as thousands of workers gathered at Ram Lila Maidan in Ghaziabad, waiting their turn to register themselves for buses. The buses would take them to various points from where special trains will leave for Bihar.

Photos showed a few counters where officials sat to take down details of the migrants. In the name of caution amid the josting, the workers had a cloth covering their faces.

When it was pointed out that such carelessness could leave them exposed to the virus, one worker said: “I don’t know about the disease, but I don’t want to die of hunger.” He said he was willing to wait for hours, but he had to go home.

Another migrant hit out at the officials for what he believed was a chaotic arrangement and mismanagement. The special trains were allowed earlier this month with distancing and other precautions to stop migrants stranded by the lockdown and left without jobs or shelter from walking hundreds of kilometres to their villages.

However, many migrants found the paperwork too tough or the fares too high. The UP government recently ordered that no migrant should be seen on the roads or rail tracks and if they are, they should be taken to a shelter or put on a bus or train.

In Ghaziabad, the administration announced special counters to help migrants take buses to the stations from where the special trains left. The number of coronavirus cases in India has crossed 96,000. Yesterday, the government extended the lockdown till May 31, but eased some restrictions in areas least affected by the virus.

UK ready to move to ‘level three’ of lockdown

0

The UK will soon be able to move to level three of the COVID-19 lockdown in “careful steps”, Business Secretary Alok Sharma has said.

Speaking at the daily press conference on Sunday, Sharma stated that the alert levels were based on the R value and number of coronavirus cases in the UK, the Metro newspaper reported.

The higher the alert level, the more strict the lockdown measures need to be, he said.

He also thanked the public for following social distancing rules.

“Throughout the period of lockdown we have been at Level four. Thanks to you, people across the country, we have collectively helped to bring the R level down.

“We are now in a position to begin moving to level 3, in careful steps,” Sharma said at the briefing.

Sharma said that after every step the government would continue to monitor the impact on R and the number of infections taking place across the country.

“We will only take the next step when we are satisfied that it is safe to do so.”

One of the first steps was to allow those who cannot work from home to return to their jobs, he said, adding that the people who fall into that category should be speaking to their employers, reports the Metro newspaper.

The public were now also allowed to have “unlimited” exercise outside and can sit down outdoors if they wish.

Households are still not allowed to mix, but one person can meet up with another outdoors, so long as they keep two metres apart at all times.

At least 34,636 people have so far died with coronavirus in the UK, following a further 170 deaths, one of the lowest daily increases since the end of March

The toll is still the highest in Europe.

As of Monday, there were a total of 244,995 COVID-19 cases.

Some mornings are tougher than others. Some days I would rather hide another hour under the covers . But my work out, my fitness regime will still be waiting when I do roll back the covers. That’s why our mind plays such an important part in any health drive. The long-term solution to fighting microbes like Covid-19 is not complete isolation or endless disinfecting, but building immunity of the body and mind to fight any such external aggravators, because this is not the first or the last one…Our mind is the one part of the body we have to work the hardest on, and yet the results of this hard work may not always be manifest to others. There is no mind bicep to flex no brain six pack to show off . But mind is what will make the difference to a successful health kick. Every day, the first thing I flex is the power of my mind to get up get rolling , move beyond what obstacles it has placed in my way , remove what clouds of doubt have come over me . If you think you can, you will. If you think you can't, you won't. Either way, you will prove yourself right . So embrace the mind and start your day by first flexing your will power and your resolve. #mondaymotivation

Arnold Schwarzenegger recalls emergency heart operation

0

Hollywood star Arnold Schwarzenegger has shared a scary but inspiring story about having open heart surgery, saying life is all about overcoming obstacles.

He recalled his emergency heart operation while delivering speech to students graduating in 2020. The “Terminator” star later posted the speech on his Instagram, reports metro.co.uk.

In the clip, he recounted his health scare, which occurred just before he started shooting “Terminator 6: Dark Fate” two years ago.

“Congratulations to the class of 2020. I’m not going to stand here and bullsh*t you about this being a fantastic time to graduate,” began the 72-year-old.

“I can promise you this coronavirus won’t be the last obstacle that you face. But it can help you prepare for the next one. That’s what life is all about, overcoming obstacles,” he said.

After discussing the coronavirus pandemic, the movie icon shared his own story.

He said: “I got a physical. I went to the doctor and he checked me up, that’s what you always do before you start a movie. The doctor said ‘You’re in great health, but I’d recommend that you go and replace your heart valve. It’s leaking blood’.”

The actor continued: “So I said, ‘I’m not going to have open heart surgery now, four months before shooting. Are you crazy?’ I was just in the middle of working out with heavy weights, getting ready, doing my stunt training and everything. He says, aNo, no, the technology has changed. This is not open-heart surgery anymore. This is a non-invasive surgery that goes through your artery in the bottom up to your heart, replace the valve, and the next day you go home. A week later, you can continue with your regular training’.”

“Then I remembered that a friend of mine, a 90-year-old producer, had the procedure done just recently. Two days after, he was at a meeting at a studio in Hollywood and he looked fantastic. So I said, ‘Okay, I’ll do it’. So after I woke up from the surgery,A I woke up 16 hours later instead of four hours (later). And there was a tube sticking out of my mouth. The doctor moved forward, took the tube and ripped it out of my throat. And I was coughing violently, and he says, “Just keep coughing. And then let us tell you what happened.”

The actor said that the doctors told him that “they had to do emergency surgery”.

“That something went wrong during this non-invasive procedure. And then it became very invasive. They said they broke through the heart wall and there was internal bleeding and I could have died if they didn’t open up my sternum and do open-heart surgery. ‘Imagine, the day before I was training really hard, and now all of a sudden he’s telling me they were saving my life. Then he says ‘You’re not out of the woods yet. There’s another danger. There are still patients in our heart unit here, who after heart surgery, pass away, not because of the surgery but because of the lung. They get pneumonia. So we’re really worried about you getting pneumonia’.”

The actor then explained that he had to do the breathing exercises while practicing walking with a walker.

He called the experience “unbelievable”, saying: ” but added: “My usual principles worked.”

How to tackle obesity during lockdown

0

The pandemic has contributed to an increase in obesity rates as weight loss programmes (which are often delivered in groups) and referred interventions such as surgery are being severely curtailed.

Importantly, the current crisis and the need for self-isolation is prompting many to rely on processed food with longer shelf life (instead of fresh produce) and canned food (with higher quantities of sodium). One might notice an increase in weight if this pattern of lifestyle persists for a longer period of time.

So what should a person do to stay healthy and make one stronger in these times? Dr Sharad Sharma, Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgeon, Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi gives a few recommendations:

Proper nutrition and hydration are vital

Those who consume a well-balanced diet are healthier and are able to build stronger immune system. A healthy diet limits the risk of chronic illnesses and infectious diseases

It is recommended to eat a variety of fresh and unprocessed foods every day to accomplish the body’s requirement of necessary Vitamins, Minerals, Dietary Fiber, Proteins and Antioxidants

Consume whole grains and legumes – this also reduces the risk of Diabetes

Drink ample water – at least 5 liters per day

Avoid sugar, fat and salt to significantly lower your risk of being overweight, and obese

Do not consume sugar-sweetened beverages & limit intake of oily food

Staying active

While the stay at home order has restricted our outdoor movements, it is important for people of all ages and abilities to be as active as possible.

Avoid sitting or slouching all the time

Every 20 minutes, move around for 3-5 minutes; walk or stretch-this will help reduce the strain on a muscle, relieve any form of mental tension and will help circulate blood to the body

Muscle activity increases if you are physically active, reducing the risk of speedy weight gain

More vigorous free exercises are also great ways to remain active at home

In current times focusing on good health, food habits and maintaining some level of physical activity will go a long way in warding off obesity.
