Photoshop on iPad gets Adobe curves, brush sensitivity tools

0

Adobe has introduced two of its core features curves and brush sensitivity by adjusting the pressure sensitivity of Apple Pencil in Photoshop on iPad.

Curves enable users to make specific adjustments to the colour and tone of the image (like contrast, exposure, saturation, highlights, shadows and color balance) in a non-destructive way.

“The first version includes adjustments of tonal curves for all channels, multi-node selections, and some great new affordances to enable the app to recognize when you want to tap and drag a node with your finger or pencil or select it,” said software major Adobe.

Users can now adjust the pressure sensitivity of Apple Pencil for more precise brushing, cloning, and other effects when using brush-based tools.

“At the lightest end of the range you get greater pressure values applied with less force, while the highest end of the range gives you greater force to achieve maximum pressure,” explained Adobe.

Photoshop on iPad allows users to craft composites with fingers and retouch images with Apple Pencil. Your PSDs will remain the same, whether you’re working on desktop or iPad.

Adobe Photoshop that arrived on iPads globally in November brings core compositing and retouching workflows to iPad.

For the millennials, this is a great opportunity to become a creative pro as Photoshop on iPad is an intuitive, more accessible entry point to the Adobe tool for new users.

It features full PSD (Photoshop document files) interoperability, a touch-based user interface (UI), Cloud document access, and the power to work on real-world, multi-layered creations.

Next up is Adobe Illustrator which is slated to arrive on iPad this year.

Australia announces emergency financial aid to Pacific Island nations

0

The Australian government has announced, “quick financial support” for 10 Pacific countries hit by Cyclone Harold and the coronavirus pandemic.

Cyclone Harold swept through the Pacific in April, causing widespread damage that exacerbated the economic impacts of COVID-19.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) committed 100 million Australian dollars (65.4 million US dollars) to nations struggling with the basic costs of running their countries, Xinhua news agency reported.

Papua New Guinea (PNG) will receive the most assistance at 20.5 million Australian dollars (13.4 million US dollars), followed by the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu at 13 million Australian dollars (8.5 million US dollars) each.

“To mitigate the impact of COVID-19 in our region, Australia has been working in partnership with Pacific Island countries and Timor-Leste to provide quick financial support, drawing on our existing aid program,” a DFAT spokesperson said.

“Australia is providing separate support packages for Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Solomon Islands, Samoa, Tonga, Nauru, Kiribati, Vanuatu, Tuvalu and Timor-Leste.

“This immediate funding will provide respite.”

The government in November 2019 provided PNG with a 440 million Australian dollars (287.7 million US dollars) short-term loan, repayments on which have been postponed amid the pandemic.

Marise Payne, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, told the parliament earlier in May that Australia’s Pacific neighbors had kept the spread of COVID-19 “to a very low rate” on account of “very swift action.”

However, she said Cyclone Harold “compounded the impact of COVID-19 in the Solomon Islands, in Tonga, in Vanuatu and in Fiji”, saying it prompted a “pivot” in foreign aid priorities.

Glucose packets, slippers, free phone calls for walking migrants

0

While cooked food and water is being regularly distributed by the NGOs and individuals among the migrant workers who are walking home, groups of people have now started taking a more practical view of the situation and are distributing items that are normally not considered as ‘essential’.

“There is no point in giving ration kits to those who are walking on the roads. Since the temperatures are rising by the day, we want to make sure that the migrants do not suffer from dehydration. We are distributing glucose packets, ORS packets and sherbet bottles so that the migrants and small children can remain hydrated in this heat. We also give out biscuit packets,” said Anil Srivastava, a retired bank employee who has set up a stall near the Jhansi bus station which has seen the maximum influx of migrants in recent weeks.

In Lucknow, near Banthra, wives of retired army personnel have set up a stall with used slippers and shoes which they are giving to migrants who need them.

“Since we cannot buy new ones in the lockdown, each one of us has taken out used slippers and shoes from our homes. The children have also contributed by giving up the extra pairs of shoes for the children of migrants. Most of those walking miles need shoes because their feet have sores and are bleeding. We also carry a first aid box and put ointment and bandages on the feet of those who need medication,” said Savita Singh, wife of a retired colonel.

These women have also stocked up on sanitary pads. “We quietly ask the women in migrant groups if they need sanitary pads. Most of them do not have the money for this but every woman needs it,” she said.

Residents of Chinhat area on the outskirts of Lucknow have bought hundreds of ‘Frooti’ packets and are distributing them to the migrant workers on the road.

“Giving cooked food in this heat can be dangerous because the food begins to rot very soon. The least we want in this situation is migrants falling ill. It is best to give them fruit drinks that keeps their energy level up and also hydrates them,” said doctor P. K. Hajela who lives in an apartment nearby.

In another new initiative, Gurdeep Singh, has set up a stall with four mobile phones from where the migrants can call up their families.

“We found that majority of those walking to their homes have either no balance left in their mobile phones or their phones are not charged. We allow these people to call their family and also offer them ‘sherbet’ and biscuits. Many of them are overjoyed after speaking to their loved ones,” he said.

Gurdeep said that his two brothers and sister have given their mobile phones for this. “My brothers and I stay here almost 24 hours of the day in turns so that the migrants can talk to their families. My father is happy that we are serving our brothers in some way,” he added.

With less than 24 hours to go before super cyclone Amphan makes a landfall in West Bengal, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday dialled up MPs of the areas that are likely to be affected by cyclone.

During his interaction with the concerned MPs, he urged them to be constantly in touch with their constituents in a “proactive” manner and guide them about the arrangements made by the different agencies.

Birla tweeted: “Spoke on phone to MPs of the affected areas regarding Cyclone Amphan in the Bay of Bengal. Urged them to sensitise people in the affected areas. Also, impressed upon them to monitor relief and rescue measures so that they timely reach those affected.”

Sudip Bandopahyay, Saugata Roy, Dilip Ghosh, Shantanu Thakur, Arjun Singh, Bala Roy, Locket Chatterjee were among the MPs from West Bengal whom Birla called. Bengal is expected to be the worst hit by the cyclone.

Birla also called up MPs from Odisha, including Pinaki Mishra, Chandrashekhar Sahu and Pratap Chandra Sarangi, among others. Parts of Odisha, particularly the ones bordering Bengal, will also bear the brunt of the super cyclone that is believed to be the strongest in the Bay of Bengal area since 1999.

Earlier in the day, BJP President J.P. Nadda held an urgent meeting with the key party functionaries from Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu through a video conference, asking them to offer BJP’s cadre base to the state governments and local authorities in their relief measures.

Are school exams permitted in Lockdown 4.0, HC bench asks MHA

0

The Bombay High Court bench in Goa on Tuesday asked the Union Ministry of Home Affairs if the new Lockdown 4.0 guidelines bar states from conducting school examinations.

The HC query followed a petition filed days after the court had disposed of another plea, clearing the way for SSC exams to be held in the state.

“The MHA is directed to impart these instructions to the learned Assistant Solicitor General of India at the earliest, so that the same can be placed before this court tomorrow itself. The situation is of urgent nature and can obviously brook no delay. It is not in the interest of any one that any uncertainty lingers with the issue of holding of examination,” the high court order said.

“Firstly, the lockdown which was to conclude by May 18, 2020, has now been extended by the MHA order dated May 17, 2020, up to May 31, 2020. Secondly, when the decision was taken to hold the examination on or about May 6, 2020, Goa did not have a single Covid positive case,” the order stated.

“However, as of today, it is pointed out that there are at least about 31 positive cases which are being treated in the state of Goa,” the high court noted.

One of the petitioners, Frederick Vaz, had argued that holding SSC exams during the Covid-19 lockdown could imperil the lives of the students appearing for the tests.

Indian Railways get state-of-the-art Alstom 12,000 BHP locomotives

0

The world’s most powerful locomotive manufactured by French giant Alstom along with the Madhepura Electric Locomotives Pvt Ltd, capable of running at a maximum of 12,000 HP, joined operations of the Indian Railways on Monday, officials said.

“Bolstering Prime Minister Narendra Modiji’s vision of Make in India, first WAG12B (12000 HP) loco departed from Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay station in Uttar Pradesh today. Powerful and capable of high speed, the locomotive is a significant addition to the Indian Railways,” tweeted Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal.

According to Railway officials, WAG12B started its services from Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay railway station (Mughalsarai Junction) in Uttar Pradesh on Monday.

The train departed from Deen Dayal Upadhyay station at 2.08 p.m. in long haul formation for Dhanbad division of East Central Railway, consisting of 118 wagons which traveled from Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction to Barwadih via Dehri-on-Sone, Garhwa Road stations.

The locomotive is capable of taking heavy consingment of freight and will be used on the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC).

“Alstom is pleased to start delivery of the electric locomotives to Indian Railways. Commencement of induction into the IR fleet, testifies our commitment towards the country. This is a revolutionary product that will be faster, safer and eco-friendly. Also, it is scripting a new chapter for India’s sustainable mobility journey and we are happy to be partnering in this,” said Alain Spohr, Managing Director, Alstom India and South Asia.

A railway ministry spokesperson said that it was a proud moment for Indian Railways, as it became the sixth country in the world to join the elite club of producing high horse power locomotives indigenously.

“It is the first time that a high horsepower locomotive has been operationalized on broad gauge track in the world. The locomotive has been produced under Make in India program. The Madhepura factory is the largest integrated greenfield facility built to the highest standards of quality and safety with a production capacity of 120 locomotives and spread across a massive 250 acres.”

Railway officials said that the locomotive is capable of running on railway tracks with conventional over head wire (OHE) lines as well as on DFC with high rise OHE lines.

The official further said that the locomotive has air-conditioned driver cabs on either side.

“The locomotive is equipped with a regenerative braking system which provides substantial energy savings during operations. These high horsepower locomotives will help to decongest the saturated tracks by improving average speed of freight trains,” the spokesperson said.

Touted as the largest Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) projects of the Railways, the Ministry of Railways and Alstom came together in 2015.

An agreement worth 3.5 billion euros was signed to manufacture 800 electric locomotives for freight services and its associated maintenance.

These locomotives are state-of-the-art IGBT-based, 3 phase drive, 9000 KW (12000 horsepower) electric locomotives. The locomotive is capable of maximum tractive effort of 706 kN, which is capable of starting and running a 6000 T train in the gradient of 1 in 150. The locomotive with twin Bo-Bo design having 22.5 T (tonnes) axle load is upgradable to 25 tonnes with design speed of 120 kmph.

The locomotive will be used on the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) for the faster movement of goods, especially coal and iron ore.

The railway official said that the project started in 2018 and Modi inaugurated the project on April 10, 2018.

The prototype locomotive was delivered in March 2018. Based on the test results having design issues, the complete locomotive including bogies was redesigned. The new design of locomotive has been inspected by Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) at Madhepura factory and cleared for dispatch from factory in November 2019, the official said.

He said RDSO has conducted oscillation trials at various speeds upto 132 kmph and the locomotive has passed oscillation trials successfully.

Did not sleep for three days straight after winning T20 WC: Uthappa

0

Veteran India batsman Robin Uthappa could not sleep for three days after the M.S. Dhoni-led team won the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, he has said. India defied all odds to clinch the 2007 T20 World Cup in South Africa, beating Pakistan in a nail-biting final by five runs.

“After winning the World Cup, I did not sleep for three days straight. It didn’t really hit us initially; we were just ecstatic that we beat Pakistan in the finals,” Uthappa said during the Royals Podcast hosted by Ish Sodhi.

“The enormity of it hit us when we landed in India. The reception we received was massive, I mean Bombay doesn’t stop for anyone, that day the entire city came to a standstill and moved only in the direction our bus was moving. Bizarrely we went through all of the Indian weather in that one day.

“What would usually take 45 minutes to an hour on a normal day, took us 5 and a half hours on that particular day. It went from being cold to rainy to humid and then hot. By the time we reached Wankhede, we were famished.

“I remember people throwing water, fruits, and chocolates at us so that we don’t lose energy and keep going. It was fun and all of us really cherished those memories. It was a massive relief to win a World Cup after 1983.

“I don’t think words do justice to the emotion of being a World Cup winner. It surpasses pretty much everything you feel as a cricketer. It’s a bit complex but it’s one of the most amazing feelings you get as an athlete.

“Simply because it makes you feel proud that you made a difference and added value to your team at that point in time to win a world championship. You have played your part and everybody has to play their part to win a World Cup,” the 34-year old elaborated.

Rajasthan Royals roped in Uthappa — who was released by Kolkata Knight Riders — for Rs 3 crore at last year’s IPL auction.

“The way I’ve been received and welcomed at RR, I haven’t missed a thing it’s been so great here. Rajasthan Royals have made me completely feel at home, it has been an amazing welcome into the franchise for me,” Uthappa said.

“I am gunning to play for RR and am delighted to be here. It’s easy to see that it’s a very well-run franchise and you need to give credit to guys who are running it.”

When Vidya Balan was stumped by Jisshu Sengupta’s attitude

0

Vidya Balan has alleged that Jisshu Sengupta “showed attitude” by not speaking to her on their first meeting. He did not even smile at her properly, she added.

The topic came up during a recent Instagram live chat featuring Vidya and her “Shakuntala Devi” co-star Jisshu. At one point of the conversation, Vidya accused in jest that when filmmaker Sujoy Ghosh introduced her with Bengali star Jisshu, he “showed attitude”, did not speak to her or smile at her properly, reports zeenews.india.com.

Jisshu promptly denied the allegation. Laughing his heart out, the actor said that Vidya often says this in front of others just to pull his leg! He added that if he had not spoken to her on their first meeting, it was probably because he was “scared” –she was Vidya Balan, after all.

The actress, of course, had praise in store for Jisshu’s negative act in Srijit Mukherji’s Bengali film, “Rajkahini”, which was later re-made in Hindi as “Begum Jaan”, incidentally starring Vidya.

“I loved you in ‘Rajkahini’ and I couldn’t believe it was the same you in ‘Piku’!” said Vidya, referring to the fact that Jisshu had a far more affable role to play in Shoojit Sircar’s “Piku”.

On the work, Jisshu Sengupta and Vidya Balan will be seen as husband and wife in “Shakuntala Devi”. In the upcoming film, Vidya Balan essays the role of Shakuntala Devi who was also known as “Human computer”. The film directed by Anu Menon also stars Sanya Malhotra and Amit Sadh in key roles. It will release on Amazon Prime Video next month.

Kirti took to Instagram, where she shared a photograph of her basic meal — chappatis, lentils, vegetables and curd.

“The simpler the better…For your system and the World.. I could have posted it as a story and people could have reacted and that’s it.. but I have put it here to talk about this idea of #keepitsimple … It’s something I have been striving to achieve for a while… And am surely getting better at it… It’s an attitude which is not limited to one area, situation or person…” Kirti wrote alongside the image.

“This lockdown, among other things has strengthened my faith in #keepitsimple … And given me enough time and opportunity to truly practice it.. from the meals I eat to the way I talk to what I do with my skin… There’s a conscious attempt to #keepitsimple …”

“Start with the simpler things and you will see how it grounds you in life and helps you see the SIMPLICITY of the so-called complicated situations and people and relationships… There’s so much PEACE to be experienced when you learn to #keepitsimple … Much Love… Stay blessed all of you.”
