India, US to form monitoring group to review trade cooperation
India-US partnership on bilateral high-tech trade and technology partnership
India and the US have decided to set up a regular monitoring group which will review progress in deepening cooperation in the bilateral high-tech trade and technology partnership between the two nations. This was decided during the inaugural meeting of India-US Strategic Trade Dialogue (IUSSTD), which was held in Washington D.C. on Tuesday.
The Indian delegation was led by Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra, while the US delegation was co-led by Alan Estevez, the Under Secretary for Industry and Security, and Victoria Nuland, the Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs.
The dialogue is a key mechanism to take forward the strategic technology and trade collaborations envisaged under the India-US initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET).
IUSSTD focussed on ways in which both governments can facilitate the development and trade of technologies in critical domains such as semiconductors, space, telecom, quantum, Artificial Intelligence, defence, bio-tech and others. Both sides reviewed the relevant bilateral export control regulations with the objective of building and diversifying resilient supply chains for these strategic technologies.
They reviewed ongoing cooperation in multilateral export control regimes and agreed to share best practices. The two sides agreed to enhance awareness among the industry, academia and other stakeholders about the export control regimes through workshops and other activities.
They acknowledged that the dialogue would be instrumental to enabling co-production, co-development and enhanced industrial collaborations in critical technologies. The co-chairs agreed to continue the dialogue with the objective of strengthening the India-US comprehensive global strategic partnership.

Apple iOS 17 offers ‘Look up’ option in image cutout feature
Apple has announced its new update ‘iOS 17’
Apple has announced its new operating software ‘iOS 17’ which includes a ‘Look up’ option in the image cutout feature that will allow users to find more information about the lifted objects from images and videos.
The iPhone maker had made many announcements at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) event on Monday, but due to lack of time, it didn’t mention many of the new iOS features onstage, reports TechCrunch.
Those unannounced features include the ability to tap on a food item in an image and search for similar recipes. Also, with the new update, the Photos app will recognize pets, like cats and dogs, and put them in the people section.
Moreover, new drawing tools like a watercolour brush, calligraphy pen, highlighter, variable-width pen and ruler, will be added to the Freeform app. With the new operating system, the iPhone maker will apply a nudity filter for “Naked photos and videos that show the private body parts that are usually covered by underwear or bathing suits.”
It will also include a new pronouns field for the contacts. “With iOS 17, users will be able to share an AirTag with five people and use the Find My app to pinpoint the location of the object,” the report said.
Won’t take any decision behind closed doors

India’s ace grapplers, Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia, who have been at the forefront of the protest against WFI outgoing chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, have accepted Sports Minister Anurag Thakur’s invitation to have a “discussion on their issues”.
The protesting wrestlers have been invited by the government for the second time days after they met Home Minister Amit Shah. In January, too, the wrestlers met Anurag Thakur at his residence and called off their protest after a committee was formed. At that time, former wrestler and BJP leader Babita Phogat played the mediator’s role.
Sakshi Malik said, “We will be meeting the Sports Minister today. Timing is not fixed yet. But we will keep everything open. We won’t take any decision behind closed doors.
“We will discuss the proposal given by the government with our seniors and supporters and only when everyone gives their consent that the proposal is fine, then will we agree.”
Earlier, on Tuesday, as a part of the ongoing probe into the sexual harassment case, the Delhi Police visited the residence of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda and recorded the statements of his associates and workers.
Finland to expel 9 Russian embassy employees
Finland will dismiss nine Russian embassy officials
Nine people working at the Russian Embassy in Helsinki will be expelled from Finland, as per a decision made by President Sauli Niinistö and the Ministerial Committee on Foreign and Security Policy.
In a statement on Tuesday, Finnish government said yesterday in a press release that the employees will be expelled because their actions have been in breach of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, reports the Helsinki Times.
Marja Liivala, the director general of the Department for Russia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, told local media that the expulsions will be carried out in the near future but refrained from providing a more detailed timetable.
She also declined to comment on the duties of the employees in question on grounds that the decision was made based on an assessment by the Finnish Security Intelligence Service (Supo). The Russian Embassy in Helsinki has a staff of 112 people.
Teemu Turunen, a deputy director at Supo, said that the nine employees were intelligence officers posing as diplomats. Russia, he estimated, will continue to desire intelligence from Finland, especially in the wake of Finland’s accession to NATO.
The latest development comes amid strained diplomatic relations between Finland and Russia. Last week, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it was closing its consulate in Lappeenranta and the consular offices in Murmansk and Petrozavodsk.
In May, it was also reported that the bank accounts of Finnish diplo
matic missions have been frozen in Russia. Finland has issued a diplomatic note over the account freezes, expecting a response from Russia on June 1.
Rescue operations continue for 2nd day
Rescue operation is still underway
Rescue operations were on to save a three-year-old girl who fell into a borewell in Madhya Pradesh’s Sehore, said officials on Wednesday. The operation has been going on for the past 18 hours after the girl fell in the borewell on Tuesday while she was playing.
“The rescue operation is still underway on the second day,” the Sehore district administration officials said, without elaborating much about the current situation of the girl. The officials said that the digging of a parallel hole/tunnel was still underway which will take some more time.
The girl, Shristi Kushwaha, was stuck at a depth of 25-30 feet in the 300-ft deep borewell. Oxygen was being supplied to her and her movements were being monitored through a camera. An official said digging was delayed due to the presence of hard rock.
On Tuesday, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan directed the district administration to rescue the baby girl. Earlier, in March this year, a 7-year-old boy fell into a borewell in Vidisha district and was rescued after 24 hours operation jointly by Indian Army and SDRF team, however, by the time the boy was rescued, he had died.
Following which, the state government had ordered the officials to check all the borewells and ensure that all of them are covered. However, no heed was paid to the instruction. In the last one and a half years, nearly half a dozen such incidents were reported in different parts of Madhya Pradesh.
