Samsung faces serious competitor
Samsung’s new competitor in Google
Samsung has been dominating the global foldable smartphone market for a few years now, but it is facing a new competitor in Google, which unveiled its first foldable smartphone, the Pixel Fold, during its annual developer conference.
The phone is available for pre-order and will be shipped next month. One of the main selling points of the $1,799 Pixel Fold is its slimmer design compared to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4, with a thickness of 12.1mm versus 15.8mm. The Pixel Fold also has a larger battery than Samsung’s phone, with 4,821 mAh compared to 4,400 mAh, making it slightly heavier at 283 grams compared to 263 grams for Samsung.
Despite facing tougher competition, Samsung sees more competition as a positive for the foldable segment, as it can lead to a bigger and more creative ecosystem and wider market adoption. For its first foldable phone, Google optimized over 50 of its applications for the Pixel Fold’s larger display and promised to continue doing so to encourage other app developers to follow suit.
Its goal is to increase the proportion of foldable phones to half of its total smartphone sales by 2025, making them another pillar of the company alongside the Galaxy S flagship series and a key category in the premium segment. According to market researcher Canalys, Samsung accounted for about 77 percent of foldable phone shipments worldwide last year.
It believes that a successful foldable phone requires two core elements: a flexible and foldable display and a strong hinge for folding and unfolding operations. During a press briefing in Berlin, Choi Won-Joon, the former head of the flagship product R&D team at Samsung’s mobile experience division, explained that foldable phones should offer unique and valuable experiences to users that they cannot get from other smartphones. To achieve this, it developed a new hinge system called a spiral hinge, after many failed attempts.
Google’s hinge system allows the two screen halves to fold completely without any gap, and it is made of durable stainless steel. The International Data Corporation (IDC) predicted that foldable phone shipments will reach 21.4 million units in 2023, a 50% increase from the previous year, and the foldable market will grow by 50.5%, while the total smartphone market will contract by 1.1%. Samsung has not yet announced the release date for the Galaxy Z Fold 5.

PVT4 Introduces Audiences to Talented New Actress Sreeleela
The much-awaited upcoming movie of Panja Vaisshnav Tej, currently untitled which is PVT4, is being directed and written by Srikanth Reddy.

1st Day Box Office Collection of the Custody

Toyota apologises after 2.15mn customers’
Toyota expresses regret to its customers
As connected cars become mainstream globally, Toyota has issued an apology after it discovered that millions of customers’ partial data were made public “due to misconfiguration of the Cloud environment” for a decade.
The automaker said it will notify nearly 2.15 million customers in Japan whose personal and vehicle information was left exposed on the web from November 6, 2013, to April 17, 2023. The exposed data includes registered email addresses, vehicle-unique chassis and navigation terminal numbers, the location of vehicles and what time they were there, and videos from the vehicle’s “drive recorder”.
“After the discovery of this matter, Toyota has implemented measures to block access from the outside, but we are continuing to conduct investigations including all cloud environments. We apologize for causing great inconvenience and concern to our customers and related parties.
Toyota is individually sending an apology and notification to the registered email address for customers whose in-vehicle terminal ID, chassis number, vehicle location information, and time may have been leaked.
“In addition, we will set up a dedicated call center to answer questions and concerns from customers,” said the Japanese giant. The company said that the main reason for this incident was insufficient explanation and thoroughness of rules for data handling.
“This time, customer information that may have been viewed from the outside will not identify the customer based on this data alone, even if accessed from the outside,” it said in a statement.
Since the discovery of this matter, “we have not confirmed any secondary use of customer information on the Internet by a third party, or whether or not there are any copies remaining, regarding customer information that may have been viewed from the outside”.
Iran Releases 2-French Nationals on ‘Humanitarian’ Grounds
French national’s release was an act of “goodwill”
Iran has released two French nationals on humanitarian grounds, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said. The two men, Bernard Phelan and Benjamin Briere were arrested in Iran in 2022 and 2020, respectively.
In a statement published by the Ministry late Friday, spokesperson Nasser Kanaani said the release was an act of “goodwill” following negotiations between the two countries at various levels, including discussions between the Iranian and French Foreign Ministers.
He added that the release was also in line with Iran’s “related laws and regulations.”
Phelan, a 64-year-old travel consultant who also held Irish nationality, was arrested in October 2022 in Iran and sentenced to over six years in prison for “sending security information” abroad after the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who died in a Tehran hospital on September 16, a few days after her collapse at a police station.
Briere was arrested in May 2020 and sentenced to eight years in prison on espionage charges. He was detained after flying a remote-controlled mini helicopter to obtain aerial or motion images near the Turkmenistan-Iran border.
Phelan was released from Mashhad prison and on his way to France with his compatriot Briere, according to French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna. Colonna had spoken earlier on Friday to her Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir Abdollahian and described the release as an “effective and trust-building step” during the phone call, the Foreign Ministry in Tehran said.
For his part, Amir-Abdollahian commended France for its “realistic approach” in dealing with Tehran. He emphasized the importance of France’s “strategic independence” in today’s changing world.

Ten tribal MLAs demanded a separate state
Ten tribal MLAs from different political parties, including BJP, in Manipur have indirectly demanded a separate state for Kuki tribals due to the ethnic unrest in the region. The legislators have demanded “Separate Administration” for their tribal, which makes up around 37 to 40 percent of the total population.
The MLAs stated in a signed statement that the violence initiated by the majority Meiteis and tacitly supported by the state government against the Chin-Kuki-Mizo-Zomi hill tribals has already partitioned the state and caused total separation from Manipur.
The MLAs claimed that their people can no longer exist under Manipur, and living with the Meitei community is like death for the tribals due to the hatred and violence against them. They expressed their endorsement of the political aspiration of separation from the state of Manipur on behalf of their community.
The ten MLAs, including five BJP legislators, two JD-U MLAs, two KPA members, and one independent MLA, have decided to hold a political consultation with their people regarding further action. They seek a separate administration under the Constitution of India from the Union of India as the state of Manipur has failed to protect them.
The MLAs represent the political aspirations of their tribal communities, who cannot live peacefully under Manipur due to the violence and hatred against them. The hills of Manipur are mainly inhabited by the Christian Naga and Kuki-Zomi communities, while the valley has Hindu and non-tribal Meitei communities.
The recent violence, clashes, and arson in more than ten districts of Manipur were sparked by the demand to include the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe category, which was opposed by the All Tribal Students’ Union of Manipur (ATSUM). The controversy began after the Manipur High Court directed the state government to submit a recommendation to the Union Tribal Affairs Ministry for the inclusion of the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribes list.
