Indian women’s hockey team tour Australia

0

The Indian women’s hockey team will tour Australia for a five-match series, which will commence on May 18 and will conclude on May 27. India will play Australia in the first three games of the series, followed by two matches against Australia A.

All the matches will be played at MATE Stadium in Adelaide.

India will play their opening match of the tour on the 18th of May before playing back-to-back games on the 20th and 21st of May. The visitors will then compete against Australia A on the 25th and 27th of May. The Australian women’s hockey team is currently ranked third in the world, while the Indian team is ranked eighth.

The tour will serve as a warm-up event for the Hangzhou Asian Games, which will take place in September-October this year.

Talking about the same, Janneke Schopman, the Chief Coach of the Indian women’s hockey team, said, “Playing Australia in Australia will help us assess where we are compared to the top of women’s hockey. More importantly, the series will be crucial for our preparations for the Asian Games in China as it will give us ideal exposure while helping us reckon the areas where we need to make improvements and changes. So, it’s a very important tour for us strategically.”

India will travel to Australia with a lot of confidence, having won the FIH Women’s Nations Cup in December 2022 by defeating host Spain in the Final. Furthermore, in January 2023, India toured South Africa, where they took on the hosts in four matches and registered comprehensive 5-1, 7-0, and 4-0 victories in the opening three games, while the fourth game ended in a 2-2 draw. However, during the same tour, the Indian side suffered a 1-3 loss at the hands of the Netherlands in their last three games.

Indian Women’s hockey team achievements:

In addition, the Indian women’s hockey team defeated three-time Olympic gold medallists Australia 1-0 in the Semi-Finals of the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. It was a historic victory for India as they were competing in only their third Olympics and qualified for the Quarter-Finals for the first time, while Australia was a three-time gold medallist.

India also fought hard against Australia in the Commonwealth Games 2022 Semi-Final match in Birmingham, tying the score at 1-1 at the end of regulation time. However, Australia won the penalty shoot-out 3-0 to make it to the final.

Currently, the Indian women’s hockey team players are gearing up for the Australia Tour by putting in the hard yards to further fine-tune their strategies and combinations in the ongoing Senior Women’s National Coaching Camp at SAI, Bengaluru.

YouTube’s revenue drops for third quarter

0

Google-owned YouTube saw its revenue from ads falling 2.6 percent (year-on-year) in the March quarter — third quarter in a row that its ad revenue has decreased.

The company, however, is seeing growth in youtube Shorts as watch time and monetization is “progressing nicely”.

“People are engaging and converting on ads across YouTube Shorts at increasing rates,” according to Philipp Schindler, Google’s chief business officer.

According to Sundar Pichai, Alphabet, and Google CEO, the number of channels uploaded to Shorts Daily grew by over 80 percent last year.

“Those posting weekly on Shorts saw the majority of new channel subscribers coming from their Shorts posts,” he informed during the analysts’ call late on Tuesday.

Overall, Alphabet reported $69.8 billion in revenue for the first quarter, a 3 percent increase (on-year).

“We are pleased with our business performance in the firstAquarter, with Search performing well and momentum in the Cloud. We introduced important product updates anchored in deep computer science and AI,” said Pichai.

Ruth Porat, CFO of Alphabet and Google, said that resilience in Search and momentum in Cloud resulted in Q1 consolidated revenues of $69.8 billion, up 3 percent year over year.

“We remain committed to delivering long-term growth and creating capacity to invest in our most compelling growth areas by re-engineering our cost base,” said Porat.

In January, Alphabet slashed 6 percent of its workforce, impacting 12,000 employees.

“As of March 31, 2023, the number of employees includes almost all of the employees affected by the reduction of our workforce. We expect most of those affected will no longer be reflected in our headcount by the end of the second quarter of 2023, subject to local law and consultation requirements,” said Alphabet.

YouTube revenue in the quarter

YouTube logged $6.69 billion in advertising revenue for the quarter that ended March 31, compared to $6.87 billion during the same period last year.

Villa move to fifth, Wolves nearly safe

0

A powerful header from defender Tyrone Mings gave Aston Villa a 1-0 win at home to Fulham, lifting them to fifth in the Premier League.

Mings’ goal saw Villa get back to winning ways after a 1-1 draw away to Brentford at the weekend, and Unai Emery’s side now has six wins and a draw in their last seven matches, reports Media.

Villa wins with 14 shots:

Villa dominated the game with 14 shots, but only three on target, against a rival that had only one effort in the entire game.

Wolverhampton beat Crystal Palace 2-0, taking a huge step closer to retaining their top-flight status while inflicting the first defeat on Palace since Roy Hodgson returned as coach.

Joachim Andersen’s own goal put Wolves ahead in the third minute when he redirected Ruben Neves’ corner into his own net under pressure.

Jose Sa made a couple of good saves to keep Palace at bay, and Wolves sealed the win thanks to Neves’ late penalty after an error by Palace keeper Sam Johnstone.

Jamie Vardy scored a vital 80th-minute equalizer for Leicester City to claim a 1-1 draw away to Leeds United.

Leicester had a stunning goal disallowed by VAR before Leeds took the lead in the 20th minute thanks to Luis Sinisterra. Vardy had a second goal ruled out for offside in the closing minutes in a game that leaves Leeds a point above Leicester in the table.

Odisha FC bask beat Bengaluru FC in Kozhikode rain

0

Odisha FC made history at the EMS Corporation Stadium here, claiming their first-ever silverware with a 2-1 victory over Bengaluru FC to be crowned champions of the Hero Super Cup.

While Brazilian Diego Maurcio struck both goals for the Bhubaneswar-based side in the first half, Sunil Chhetri scored from a penalty in the 85th minute to reduce the margin for Bengaluru FC.

Up against seasoned opponents in the shape of Bengaluru, Odisha FC did all the damage in the first half with two goals from Diego Mauricio. Clifford Miranda also made history, becoming the first Indian coach to win the Super Cup.

Bengaluru FC, playing their third final of the season, started as the more authoritative of the two sides in a rain-lashed kick-off. The Blues kept plenty of possession in the opposition half, while Odisha FC, who had conceded two early goals in their last two games, were content with sitting back, making a cautious start to their first-ever final.

However, as the rain died down, so did Bengaluru’s command of the ball. Odisha FC began causing trouble from set-pieces, with Carlos Delgado’s close-range volley from Sahil Panwar’s corner their first real chance. Sandesh Jhingan was on hand to make a last-ditch block for Bengaluru.

The breakthrough came dramatically for Odisha FC in the 23rd minute as Gurpreet Singh Sandhu made a hash of what should’ve been a routine collection from a harmless-looking Diego Mauricio free-kick. The Brazilian’s shot was aimed straight at the Bengaluru custodian, who had his entire body behind the ball but let it slip out of his hand and trickle past the goalline.

Mauricio would go close again just a few minutes later, heading a Jerry Mawihmingthanga cross wide of the far post. But there was no stopping Odisha’s talisman the next time of asking as he made it 2-0 seven minutes before half-time. It all started with a diagonal ball from Victor Rodriguez to pick out Jerry on the right, who headed it across the face of the goal. Mauricio, racing past his marker Sandesh Jhingan, tapped it in with Gurpreet wrong-footed.

With Bengaluru looking disheveled and completely on the back foot, Clifford Miranda’s men continued to go full throttle and could’ve still added to their lead before the break. First, it was Nandha Kumar, who sent a curling volley from the edge of the box, which Gurpreet was equal to. Then it was Jerry again causing trouble down the flank, entering the box from the right before thundering a strong effort off the crossbar.

Bengaluru, arguably lucky to be only two goals down at half-time, made as many as four changes for the second half. Simon Grayson brought on Sivasakthi Narayanan, Pablo Perez, Prabir Das, and Aleksandar Jovanovic in their bid to avoid a second final loss in just over a month. However, Odisha FC continued to be their dominating self after the restart too as Gurpreet was kept busy in the Blues’ goal.

Just 40 seconds into the second half, he had to dive down low to parry away Mauricio’s long-range effort. Five minutes later, he was at full stretch to push over a cheeky chipped attempt from Victor over the crossbar. Nandha, who had been a menace on the left wing, replicated his danger on the right as well. After being fed with a defense-splitting ball by Victor, Nandha sent a powerful low shot, which Prabir managed to deflect onto the side-netting.

It took 77 minutes for Bengaluru to test Amrinder with their first attempt on target. And it wasn’t particularly threatening as well. Pablo, out of options near the edge of the box, went for a low shot through a forest of legs, which Amrinder pushed away with ease.

With just five minutes to go, a ray of hope emerged for Bengaluru when Sivasakthi was brought down in the box by Nandha. The resulting penalty was lodged into the back of the net by the ever-reliable Sunil Chhetri with a one-step run-up. The section of traveling Bengaluru fans roared with belief as there was still plenty of time left to bounce back in the game.

But it was to be a heartbreaking end for Bengaluru. One of their best chances of the entire game came in the dying moments when Suresh Wangam’s cross from the left was narrowly headed wide by Jhingan.

Odisha FC

Odisha FC, who showed nerves for the first time in the tournament in the final few minutes, was more relieved than ever when referee Rahul Kumar Gupta blew his full-time whistle. The job was done. They had claimed their first-ever trophy.

Gujarat Titans against Mumbai Indians by 55 runs

0

Riding on an incredible batting display followed by a classy show with the ball, Gujarat Titans registered a clinical 55-run win over Mumbai Indian in their IPL 2023 match at the Narendra Modi Stadium here on Tuesday.

With this win, the Gujarat Titans jumped to the second spot with 10 points on the points table while MI are placed seventh with eight points in seven games.

A half-century from Shubman Gill (56 off 34) followed by a late onslaught by Manohar (42 off 21) and Miller (46 off 22), who shared a 71-run partnership, helped Titans recover from a poor start. Rahul Tewatia gave the finishing touches to the innings with his unbeaten 20 off 5 as Gujarat Titans posted 207/6 in their 20 overs.

Afghanistan spinners Rashid Khan (2-27) and Noor Ahmad (3-37) starred with the ball as Gujarat Titans restrict Mumbai Indians to 152/9 and sealed a comprehensive victory by 55 runs.

Chasing the huge 208-run target, MI had a dismal start as they lost the skipper Rohit Sharma cheaply for four in the Power-play. Rohit tried to flick on the leg-side, but got a leading edge of the bat, the ball chipped back to the bowler and Hardik Pandya completed the catch.

Titans’ bowlers continued to keep the run rate in check from the beginning of the chase except in the fourth over when Hardik Pandya conceded two big hits from Cameron Green as Mumbai managed to score just 29 runs and lost a crucial wicket of their skipper in the Power-play.

Then, Rashid Khan’s double strike in the eighth over put a further dent in MI’s run chase. The leg-spinner first removed Ishan Kishan for 13 then he trapped Impact Player Tilak Verma with his googly for lbw, and MI was reeling at 45/3 in eight overs.

Skipper Pandya rotated his bowler smartly and kept a tight hold on the match as MI were reeling 58/3 at the halfway stage through the chase and the asking run rate climbed to over 15 runs per over.

Noor Ahmad then caused further misery to Mumbai Indians when he sent Cameron Green packing for 33 and a dot ball later removed Tim David for a duck and half of the Mumbai side was back in the pavilion with 59 runs on the board in 11 overs.

Suryakumar smashed Rashid for two boundaries and six in the 12th over and Nehal Wadhera joined the party as he hit a couple of boundaries and a maximum in the next overs before Ahmad caught and bold SKY on the last ball of the over, making the chase even tougher for MI.

Thanks to a few big overs, Mumbai Indians collected 83 runs in between 7 and 15 overs and the equation was 96 needed in 30 balls to win for Mumbai.

Wadhera and Piyush Chawla stood firm and tried to put up a fight as they established a 45-run partnership before the latter got run out in an 18th over. The same over saw Wadhera’s 40-run innings coming to an end when the batter mistimed a scoop shot and the ball went straight to fine leg fielder.

Though the win was impossible for MI, Arjun Tendulkar went for a six in the final over before falling on the fourth ball of the over, and Gujarat Titans sealed a massive 55-run win.

Earlier, put in to bat first, GT had a quiet start as they lost opener Wriddhiman Saha early. Disciplined bowling from Arjun Tendulkar and Jason Behrendorff kept the batters quiet before Gill shifted gears in the sixth over, hitting Cameron Green for back-to-back boundaries, followed by a six on the next ball taking Gujarat Titans to 50/1 in the Power-play.

After an expensive sixth over, MI turned the screws as Chawla sent packing skipper Hardik Pandya for 13. Soon, Gill collected a boundary and completed his 17th IPL fifty with a single off 30 balls and GT was 84/2 at the halfway stage.

Kartikeya provided MI with the much-needed breakthrough as he got Dangerman Gill out for 56. Then, Chawla piled further misery on the Gujarat Titans as he sent Vijay Shankar back to the hut for 19.

Miller and Manohar accelerated the innings with their hits and the duo collected 42 runs in the next three overs and stitched a stunning 71-run partnership off 35 balls, which Meredith broke in the next over as he trapped Manoher with his full toss.

But Miller and Rahul Tewatia continued the onslaught. The latter smacked two more sixes in the last over and a delivery later Behrendorff removed Miller to deny him a half-century and Rashid Khan finished the innings with a double as the Gujarat Titans posted 207 for the loss of six wickets.

Brief scores between Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians:

Gujarat Titans 207/6 in 20 overs (Shubman Gill 56, David Miller 46, Abhinav Monahar 42; Piyush Chawla 2-34) beat Mumbai Indians 152/9 in 20 overs (Cameron Green 33, Nehal Wadhera 40; Noor Ahmad 3-27, Rashid Khan 2-27, Mohit Sharma 2-38) by 55 runs.

Gavaskar, Harbhajan, Irfan Pathan hail Ajinkya Rahane’s selection for WTC Final

0

Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan and off-spinner Harbhajan Singh welcomed the national selectors’ decision to bring back Ajinkya Rahane for the World Test Championship final in London in June.

The BCCI has announced the Indian squad for the World Test Championship Final scheduled to begin on June 7 at Kennington Oval against Australia.

Senior India batter Rahane made his India comeback on the back of a stellar show in the Ranji Trophy and followed it up with a brilliant run in the IPL for Chennai Super Kings.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar hailed the selection of Rahane in the Test side as a replacement for Shreyas Iyer and claimed the Mumbaikar has been rewarded for a good show in the domestic circuit.

Speaking on Star Sports’ Cricket Live Sunil Gavaskar said:

Sunil Gavaskar said, “That was the only change needed for the Indian side. They needed a replacement for Shreyas Iyer. Ajinkya Rahane finds himself in the WTC squad not because of his current IPL form, mind you, he was in a pretty decent form in the Ranji Trophy. He did very well for Mumbai in the domestic season. The question now is in the final eleven, who’s going to be playing? Whether it will be KS Bharat the wicket-keeper or KL Rahul. We’ll just have to wait and see.”

While picking his Playing 11 for the WTC Final, Gavaskar said, “Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill will be my opening picks, Cheteshwar Pujara at three, Virat Kohli at four, Ajinkya Rahane at five, KL Rahul at six who’ll keep the wickets as well. Then there will be Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin, followed by Jaidev Unadkat, Mohammed Shami, and Mohd Siraj.”

Former India cricketer Irfan Pathan also reckoned that Rahane’s past performances in overseas conditions will bode well for him.

Speaking on Star Sports’ Cricket Live, Irfan Pathan said, “Had Shreyas Iyer been fit then Rahane would not have got the place in the WTC Final side. But as far as the current form is concerned, he is looking in great touch. The format in which he is playing now is completely different but Rahane’s performance on foreign pitches has always been good and this has gone in his favour.”

Former India cricketer Harbhajan Singh, however, opined that Suryakumar Yadav should have also been kept in the squad along with Rahane because SKY can accelerate the scoring with his ability to play 360-degree shots.

“I would have kept both Surya and Rahane in the team. I would have played Surya instead of Axar because you are not going to play with three spinners in English conditions. In such a situation, having Surya in the team would have given an additional advantage to the batting line-up,” Harbhajan Singh told Star Sports.

Chinese Researchers Attain Ultra-Fast 6G Communication

0

A team of Chinese researchers has achieved ultra high-speed communication with the first-ever real-time wireless transmission of the 6G technology, the media reported on Tuesday.

The research team from the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation Second Institute used terahertz orbital angular momentum communication technology, reports South China Morning Post.

Terahertz refers to a frequency range between 100 GHz and 10 THz in the electromagnetic spectrum.

In the experiment, the team used a special antenna to generate four different beam patterns at a frequency of 110 GHz.

With those patterns, they achieved real-time wireless transmission at a speed of 100 gigabits per second on a 10 GHz bandwidth, significantly increasing the efficiency of bandwidth usage.

“In the future, this technology can also be applied to short-range broadband transmission fields, supporting high-speed communication between lunar and Mars landers, spacecraft, and within spacecraft themselves,” the report said.

Because of its higher frequency, terahertz communication can carry more information and allows for faster data transfer rates. It has attracted significant attention for its potential in 6G communication, high-speed internet, and secure communications, such as in complex military environments.

6G mobile transmission technology is 10-20 times faster than 5G. In the future, peak communication speeds using 6G are expected to reach one terabit per second.

Hyderabad court grants conditional bail to YSRTP leader Sharmila

A city court on Tuesday granted conditional bail to YSR Telangana Party (YSRTP) leader Y. S. Sharmila, who was arrested and remanded to judicial custody for assaulting police personnel on duty.

Hearing the bail petition of Sharmila, the Nampally court granted her conditional bail. She has been asked to submit two sureties each of Rs 30,000 and take permission from the court before going abroad.

The court had on Monday night sent her to judicial custody for 14 days. She was subsequently shifted to Chanchalguda Jail.

The sister of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy was arrested on Monday morning when she allegedly assaulted police personnel while being detained for staging a protest without permission.

Sharmila allegedly manhandled two sub-inspectors and slapped a woman constable.

According to police, the driver of Sharmila’s car had not stopped the vehicle on their order and hit a constable injuring him.

Police had booked her and her two drivers under IPC section 353A(Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 332 (Voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 509(Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and 427 (Mischief causing damage).

The incident had occurred when police had gone to Sharmila’s house following information that she was going to the office of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) question paper leak. Since there was no permission for Sharmila’s visit to the SIT office, the police did not allow her to leave the house. As she sat in protest on the road in front of her house, she was arrested.

The YSRTP leader was taken to Jubilee Hills police station. Later, her mother Y. S. Vijayamma went to the police station to meet her. When she was stopped by the police, she had an argument with them. A video shows Vijayamma slapping a woman police constable.
