Chandigarh Gully Cricket tournament concludes with message to shun drugs

The 18-day Chandigarh Gully Cricket 2023 extravaganza, involving hundreds of players, came to a successful conclusion here on Sunday with a message to shun drugs.

Team No. 20 won the tournament organized by UT Cricket Association and Chandigarh Police by defeating Team No. 53 by three wickets in a thrilling encounter.

In the final match played at Sector 16 Cricket Stadium, Team No. 20 chased down the target of 69 on the second last ball of the match.

The winning team was awarded with Rs 51,000, while the runner-up team bagged Rs 31,000. Both the semi-finalist teams were honored with Rs 11,000 each.

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, in his broadcast message, congratulated the organizers for successfully organizing the tournament and called upon them to participate in the next edition as well.

Former Indian Cricketer and Indian cricket team chief selector Chetan Sharma, who was the chief guest, said that the youth got the best direction through cricket.

On the occasion, representatives of the India Book of Records felicitated Gully Cricket Tournament for setting a record for the largest number of teams participating in a tournament in a single city.

UTCA President Sanjay Tandon said that the tournament was successful in meeting the goals and expectations.

He said ‘Balla Ghumao – Nasha Bhagao’ of the tournament has reached every corner of the city. Tandon also said that the selectors kept eye on every match to pick the best talent from the tournament. Twenty cricketers have been selected and will be mentored by UTCA.

Expressing his views, Chandigarh Police DGP Praveer Ranjan said that Chandigarh Police is always trying to show the right path to the youth of the city and they will continue to organize this tournament in near future with the help of UTCA.

‘Harry Potter’ author J.K. Rowling has been backed by actor Jim Broadbent, 73, as he pledges to confront her critics “if it came to it.”

His comments come as it was revealed there will be a brand-new Harry Potter TV series, with many people already vowing to boycott it. Speaking in an interview with The Daily Telegraph, Broadbent was asked for his opinion on Rowling and the backlash she’s received due to her position on single-sex spaces, trans rights and gender.

He replied, quoted by Mirror.co.uk: “It’s really sad. I think J.K. Rowling is amazing. I haven’t had to confront it myself, but I would support her in that, I think, if it came to it.”

Many avid fans of Harry Potter have slammed the idea of turning the world-famous book and movie franchise into a TV series after the main cast have almost all distanced themselves from Rowling following her controversial views about the LGBTQ+ community.

Mirror.co.uk further states that her controversial views on transgender people and gender identity caused widespread outrage during the height of the pandemic after she slammed the term ‘people who menstruate’ being used in replace of the word ‘woman’ in a tweet.

Following the blow-up, Rowling penned a lengthy essay on her website stating her position on trans issues, which boils down to her belief that biological sex should be considered separate from gender.

ChatGPT fails when it comes to accounting, finds major study

AI chatbot ChatGPT is still no match for humans when it comes to accounting and while it is a game changer in several fields, the researchers say the AI still has work to do in the realm of accounting.

Microsoft-backed OpenAI has launched its newest AI chatbot product, GPT-4 which uses machine learning to generate natural language text, passed the bar exam with a score in the 90th percentile, passed 13 of 15 advanced placement (AP) exams and got nearly perfect score on the GRE Verbal test.

“It’s not perfect; you’re not going to be using it for everything,” said Jessica Wood, currently a freshman at Brigham Young University (BYU) in the US. “Trying to learn solely by using ChatGPT is a fool’s errand.”

Researchers at BYU and 186 other universities wanted to know how OpenAI’s tech would fare on accounting exams. They put the original version, ChatGPT, to the test.

“We’re trying to focus on what we can do with this technology now that we couldn’t do before to improve the teaching process for faculty and the learning process for students. Testing it out was eye-opening,” said lead study author David Wood, a BYU professor of accounting.

Although ChatGPT’s performance was impressive, the students performed better.

Students scored an overall average of 76.7 percent, compared to ChatGPT’s score of 47.4 percent.

On 11.3 percent of questions, ChatGPT scored higher than the student average, doing particularly well on AIS and auditing.

But the AI bot did worse on tax, financial, and managerial assessments, possibly because ChatGPT struggled with the mathematical processes required for the latter type, said the study published in the journal Issues in Accounting Education.

When it came to question type, ChatGPT did better on true/false questions and multiple-choice questions but struggled with short-answer questions.

In general, higher-order questions were harder for ChatGPT to answer.

“ChatGPT doesn’t always recognize when it is doing math and makes nonsensical errors such as adding two numbers in a subtraction problem or dividing numbers incorrectly,” the study found.

ChatGPT often provides explanations for its answers, even if they are incorrect. Other times, ChatGPT’s descriptions are accurate, but it will then proceed to select the wrong multiple-choice answer.

“ChatGPT sometimes makes up facts. For example, when providing a reference, it generates a real-looking reference that is completely fabricated. The work and sometimes the authors do not even exist,” the findings showed.

That said, authors fully expect GPT-4 to improve exponentially on the accounting questions posed in their study.

“(Grace) said, ‘Dad says Star Wars is broken.’ So they can’t watch it anymore. And we just got to New York and she said, ‘Is Star Wars broken in New York too?'”

“And so I said, ‘Yeah, yeah it’s broken,” Weisz joked.

The actress said that so far, Grace had seen the first three original films in the Star Wars trilogy and Craig has shown her some clips from the later movies.

Colbert then turned to question Weisz about the film series, as she didn’t know the first movie was originally called Star Wars and couldn’t recall whether she watched the series or not.

“How many Star Wars movies have there been?” Colbert asked, to which she incorrectly responded, “12.”

Colbert teased that this is the “part of the movie where we find out [Weisz is] the alien,” before asking her a few more pop questions about the movie.

“What is the thing they’re trying to destroy in the movie?,” he asked, warning the audience “Don’t tell her.”

“Darth Vader?” Weisz also mistakenly answered.
