Defending champion Max Verstappen qualified in pole position, his first-ever in Melbourne, for Sunday’s 2023 Australian Grand Prix with two Mercedes drivers snapping at his heels in second and third position.
With this latest pole position, Red Bull driver Verstappen drew level with Spaniard Fernando Alonso at 22 career pole positions. Mercedes’ George Russell qualified second and former Drivers’ Championship winner Lewis Hamilton will line up third for Sunday’s main race.
Verstappen set a time of 1m 16.732s to take his first Australian Grand Prix pole position ahead of Russell, who was 0.236s off the pace in Q3. Mercedes’ Hamilton ended up third on the grid, 0.372s off the pace, while Fernando Alonso was 0.407s off the pace in fourth position.
Carlos Sainz qualified fifth for Ferrari in front of Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll, while Charles Leclerc struggled on the way to P7. Alex Albon managed a stellar P8 for Williams to leave Alpine’s Pierre Gasly ninth and Nico Hulkenberg 10th for Haas.
Sergio Perez of Red Bull ended up 20th after a crash in the 1st Qualifying session.
Yellow flags ruled the first qualifying session – where the official risk of rain was 90% – as Logan Sargeant went off track, just before Perez brought out red flags by locking up and beaching his Red Bull in the Turn 3 gravel having struggled throughout FP3. Conditions stayed dry and Verstappen set the fastest time in Q1 ahead of Russell and Hamilton.
In the second qualifying session (Q2), Verstappen continued his run to top the session ahead of Alonso, which set up a nail-biting Q3 where Verstappen took a provisional pole in Q3 but reported gearshift issues. Despite that, he improved to cement pole with a blistering effort.
Alpine’s Esteban Ocon was caught in traffic and eliminated from Q2 in P11, 0.08s off safety, while Yuki Tsunoda was visibly annoyed at being held up in the pit lane weighbridge before he was eliminated in P12 for AlphaTauri.
McLaren’s Lando Norris made a brace of mistakes in Q2 and finished P13 ahead of Haas’s Kevin Magnussen, while Nyck de Vries finished P15 in qualifying for AlphaTauri. Home hero Oscar Piastri was 0.047s off safety in Q1 as the McLaren driver qualified 16th ahead of Alfa Romeo’s Zhou Guanyu and Williams’ Sargeant in P18. Valtteri Bottas hit traffic in Q1 and qualified 19th, leaving Perez 20th after his Q1 excursion.
Earlier in the first qualifying period, drivers emerged on slick tires to make use of dry conditions at the start of Q1 despite the official risk of rain at 90%. Just six minutes into the session, Williams’ Logan Sargeant brought out a yellow flag by going off track out of Turn 13, and one minute later Red Bull’s Sergio Perez locked up at Turn 3 and beached his car in the awaiting gravel.
The clock paused with 11 minutes and 44 seconds remaining of Q1, with Nico Hulkenberg top of the timesheets and 10 drivers yet to set a flying lap. When the session resumed, laps came thick and fast with drivers fuelled up for multiple laps as their soft tires held up in the cool conditions.
Eventually, Verstappen held the top spot with an effort of 1m 17.384s as Russell was 0.270s off in P2 and Mercedes teammate Hamilton third by 0.305s. Esteban Ocon made a late jump to fourth for Alpine, 0.386s off, to leave the Aston Martins fifth and sixth with Fernando Alonso ahead of Lance Stroll.
Sainz took P7 in front of Alex Albon, who was on the pace throughout in his Williams, while Hulkenberg improved and took P9 ahead of Haas teammate Magnussen.
Former US President Donald Trump called on his supporters to rally around him and protest nationwide as he expects to be arrested coming Tuesday in anticipation of an indictment from a New York jury of a Manhattan court on the years-long investigation into a hush-money scheme involving adult film actress Stormy Daniels and the AG’s tax fraud case.
“Protest, take our nation back,” Trump said. Referring to himself in a social media post, he said the “leading Republican candidate and former president of the United States will be arrested Tuesday next week. But he did not detail the reasons for his possible arraignment and arrest. However, Trump’s legal team said, following his social post, that they had not received any notifications so far from the prosecutors.
Meetings after meetings have been held through the week between state and federal law enforcement agencies in New York City on the preparations to be made for security ahead of a possible indictment of Trump, media reports said adding the US was already on the edge fearing a repeat of the January 6 attack on Capitol Hill.
Trump has been pushing his team to get his base riled up in the belief that the indictment would give him considerable political leverage, CNN said in a report.
Any indictment of Trump, who has already announced his 2024 re-election is expected to change the political narrative around a controversial politician, considered a divisive figure by political strategists.
As Trump has an elaborate history of civil litigation, both before and after his presidency in 2016 to 2023, any criminal charge against him would dramatically alter his legal woes even as he works against odds within the GOP (The Republican Party) to recapture the White House in a 3rd time bid.
Meanwhile, CNN says another witness is expected to testify on Monday before the grand jury investigating the hush money payments, the cornerstone of New York District Attorney Alan Bragg’s base for arranging the former president. Whether this witness would be the last in this case occurred during the 2016 pre-polls when Trump allegedly paid off adult star Stormy Daniels in his reportedly stormy affair with her remains to be seen. Republicans say this is a fabricated case.
Trump’s legal team is now behind the scenes preparing for the steps to be taken should the former president be indicted. Joe Tacopina, an attorney for Trump, later said the former president had based his claims on press reports.

Mike Pence, vice president under Trump, endorsed McCarthy’s statement saying: “Well, like many Americans, I’m just – I’m taken aback.” He told Breitbart News in a radio interview that the Manhattan district attorney’s investigation “reeks” of “political persecution.” The DA’s Office refused to comment. Trump reportedly told his advisors that the NY DA Alan Bragg hates him.
Media reports in the US claim that Trump’s call for a protest seems like a history replaying the January 6 action of the ex-President to reject the results of the 2020 presidential election declaring Joe Biden as President that culminated in the deadly January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol.
Some of Trump’s advisers have urged him in private to call off his appeal for protest as they feared that the optics of a mass protest in the streets of Manhattan could spiral out of control repeating the 2021 insurrection.
Meanwhile, Bragg said in an email to staff on Saturday that his office will “not tolerate attempts to intimidate our office or threaten the rule of law in New York.”
New Zealand batting great Ross Taylor believes veteran batter David Warner has it in him to break his indifferent form and claim a spot in Australia’s playing eleven ahead of the World Test Championship Final in June.
Warner will now be captaining Delhi Capitals in the 2023 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and apart from striving to make the team win, he would be aiming to push for selection in the Australia side for the WTC Final against India at The Oval in England from June 7-11.

“If he can score some runs and lead from the front for Delhi, I am sure that would give him a lot of confidence leading into the WTC Final and the Ashes as well,” Taylor was quoted as saying by the ICC.

Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp is rolling out a feature on Windows beta which disables multiple answers within polls.
A new option is available within the poll creator which allows users to force other people to select only one answer, reports WABetaInfo.
As respondents are forced to select the option they firmly believe in, this new feature will result in more accurate polls.
Moreover, this feature can be especially helpful for queries that only need one response as the poll will be more relevant.
Some WhatsApp beta testers have already received this functionality for Android and iOS.
The ability to disable multiple answers within polls is currently available for some beta testers that install the latest WhatsApp beta for Windows update available on the Microsoft Store, and is expected to roll out to more users over the coming days, the report said.
Meanwhile, last month, it was reported that the messaging platform was rolling out a new “multi-selection” feature for messages on Windows beta.
With the new feature, users can select multiple messages after clicking on “Select” within the context menu of a conversation. Also, they can click anywhere within a conversation, and then the “Select messages” option will appear.

Tech giant Google is rolling out a new indicator in its mapping platform ‘Google Maps’ which will help users to prevent losing their pins.
With the new indicator, when the users manually put a pin in the map by tapping a location or when they find a place through Maps search, they can now explore around without losing their pin, reports AndroidPolice.
If the users pan or rotate the map, an indicator will continue to point in the initial direction as the pin’s original placement after the pin left the screen.
Moreover, if the users tap the indicator, it will automatically re-center itself on the pin.
Meanwhile, last week, the tech giant was rolling out the “Immersive View” feature more widely in Maps.
The Immersive View feature, which was sold as a “whole new way to explore” with Google Maps, augments the existing photorealistic aerial views of popular locations and landmarks with time and weather contextual flyovers of the specific mapped regions.
Google Maps Immersive View combines scenic views of a city and its landmarks with suggestions of places to learn about or visit, as well as views of the interiors of some buildings.

With around a month left for the May 10 Assembly polls, all the parties have expedited their process of finalizing the tickets in Karnataka.
A screening committee of the ruling BJP in the state is meeting at a private resort here on Saturday to finalize candidates for the first list.
The party had already collected opinion from the local leaders and officer-bearers of every Assembly constituency regarding the candidates. The leaders will hold discussions with core committee members of all districts for two days starting Saturday.
Three senior party workers in every district will finalize the list of candidates and send it to the central committee after considering all inputs, explain insiders.
Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai had stated that it would take a week’s time for the party to announce a list of candidates.
According to sources, the opposition Congress which had announced the first list of 124 candidates, has finalized a second list of 70 candidates.
The party had held a series of meetings in this regard and discussed the contest of Siddaramaiah from the Kolar constituency as well. His candidature had been already announced for Varuna constituency.
For the remaining 100 seats, sources in Congress explain that one name has been finalized for 60 constituencies. For more than 30 seats, two names have been finalized and for five constituencies, the party still has to decide among as many candidates.
Responsibility for quelling the dissidence has been given to state party President D.K. Shivakumar. The list has already been sent to the high command and the final call will be taken in New Delhi, sources said.
Meanwhile, JD(S), which announced 93 candidates in December 2022, is expected to announce the second list by next week. The party is likely to take a call on Hassan assembly seat, which has resulted in strife within the family of former PM H.D. Deve Gowda.

According to HP CEO Enrique Lores, AI technology is only going to accelerate in the coming years.
“AI offers very exciting opportunities for us to create new product categories. Many of our PCs are using AI to do preventive maintenance, to offer a better experience to our customers,” he said during the company’s company’s flagship ‘HP Amplify Partner Conference 2023’ here.
The AI-powered technologies at the company remove noises around you when you are in a video conference.

Georgia’s legislature has taken aim at the attacks on Hinduism emanating from academia and condemned “Hinduphobia, anti-Hindu bigotry and intolerance”.
The resolution adopted unanimously by the State House of Representatives, said: “Hinduphobia is exacerbated and institutionalized by some in academia who support the dismantling of Hinduism and accuse its sacred texts and cultural practices of violence and oppression.”
While bigotry directed against other religions has been condemned by state and city legislatures across the US, they have refrained from condemning Hinduphobia, making Georgia the first to do so.
The resolution sponsored by five State Representatives acknowledged the contributions of the Hindu religion as well as Hindus to the world and the US while condemning “Hinduphobia, anti-Hindu bigotry, and intolerance”.
It declared the state’s Forsyth County “as a place that welcomes the diversity brought by Hindu Americans and all those who work hard, follow our laws, upholds family values, and contribute to our economic and social well-being”.
More than 40 universities, including elite institutions, cosponsored a conference in 2021 on “Dismantling Global Hindutva”, which was seen by many Hindu organizations as a semantically veiled attack on Hinduism.
The universities that were involved included the University of California Berkeley, the University of Chicago, the University of Pennsylvania, Columbia, Harvard, Princeton, and Stanford, according to Berkeley’s South Asia Studies Institute.
The resolution said that “there have been documented instances of hate crimes against Hindu Americans over the last few decades in many parts of the country”.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s report on bias crimes released last month covering 2021 said there were 16 anti-Hindu crimes with 18 victims, an increase from the 11 reported the previous year.
The Georgia resolution cited a report by Rutger’s University’s Network Contagion lab that tracks disinformation and hate on the internet, “Anti-Hindu Disinformation: A Case Study of Hinduphobia on Social Media”.
According to the university, the report “found evidence of a sharp rise and evolving patterns of hate speech directed toward the Hindu community across numerous social media platforms”.
The university also is home to academics who are harsh critics of Hinduism.
The resolution extolled the US as “a beacon of hope, progress, and innovation, attracting people from around the world to create and live a better and fulfilling life” which has “welcomed more than four million Hindus from all corners of the world and given them better 8 opportunities and the freedom to practice Hinduism, also known as ‘Sanatana Dharma'”.
On the contribution of Hinduism, the resolution said, “Yoga, Ayurveda, meditation, food, music, arts, and more have enriched the cultural fabric and have been widely adopted in American society and enriched the lives of millions”.
“The American Hindu community has been a major contributor to diverse sectors such as medicine, science and engineering, information technology, hospitality, finance, academia, manufacturing, energy, retail trade, and so much more”, the resolution said.
