Enthralling ‘Bholaa’ is ‘paisa vasool’ all the way: Review

Action is a wide-open genre and term, and when one endeavor to include an emotion-filled tale into the matrix, it sure does have a strong appeal to movie watchers cutting across demographics.

In his newest directorial, the actioner ‘Bholaa’, Ajay Devgn relooks and redefines the ‘Man on a Mission’ exercise with overwhelming fervor, grit, and determination. And the best part is that for him, his awe-inspiring task seems like some kind of an errand he has been made to run.

And so, when Inspector Diana (Tabu in yet another impressive cop role) confiscates a consignment of cocaine, obviously, the euphoria of the entire police force at her thana knows no bounds. But after downing a few drinks their elation is shortlived when during the celebrations itself, the senior officer (Kiran Kumar) and all the subordinate policemen fall unconscious.

Diana, who is on her way to the police station, is shocked at the sight of some 40 cops lying dead to the world on the ground. She must take them to a hospital for treatment and get them on their feet as fast as possible for she smells a rat. She figures out that the gangsters must be the brains behind such a nasty trick. It is clear to her that the drinks were laced with poison that would kill them.

Just then, she learns that Bholaa has been released from prison after serving a sentence and is all set to meet his daughter Jyoti at the orphanage where she is being raised. Finding no one to drive a comatose lot of policemen, she instructs Bholaa to take the truck carrying all 40 of them to the hospital.

This is the man who would risk his neck more because of the fear that Diana would carry out her threat that if he chooses to disobey her orders, he would remain behind bars for the rest of his life, and never see his daughter’s face. It is now the lives of 40 men against the privilege of reuniting their child.

Does Diana also realize what the busting of drug trafficking gangster Nithari’s cocaine shipment worth? 900 crore by her and her team is the cause of such an act of revenge. And thus begins a race-against-time battle as Bholaa helps Diana and her team to take the almost lifeless cops to the hospital on the one hand and also evade, fight off and even attack if need be, violent strikes from the hordes of men on bikes emerging every 10 minutes on the highway.

Orchestrated by Nithari, who has placed a bounty on the cops to motivate the gangsters, the ride gets prolonged more and more as every now and then, Bhola has to encounter ruthless and outrageously wicked goons who keep pouncing on his truck with deadly weapons.

Now, this is the kind of badass movie that goes down well with audiences. So long as the plot remains engaging in the edge-of-the-seat way, the 144-minute film kicks forward in a hail of bullets, car chases, fist fights, and martial arts wizardry. And who doesn’t love such action?

Led by actor-director Devgn, who is in full form, his character doesn’t even bat an eyelid when he delivers solid punches to dozens and dozens of men, He reminds us of his long trail of action-oriented films. And while he clobbers them all with his knock-out hits, there’s nothing but an innocent-looking face behind all the power-packed anger — after all, he needs to go meet his 10-year-old daughter who has never ever seen him!

With death-defying action sequences and an epic historic sweep, ‘Bholaa’ offers everything a martial arts fan could ask for. Music by Ravi Basnur and Aseem Bajaj’s cinematography is both in sync with the storyline.

Stately Tabu is every director’s choice as the most dependable actor who can pull off any role — a serious role of a wife or a lover (‘Haider’, ‘Andhadhun’), a fun-loving character in an out-and-out comedy (‘Bhool Bhulaiya’), or here, as the law-abiding, gun-toting uniformed officer, she essays each role with elan, dexterity, poise and honesty that’s rare.

From among the supporting cast, Gajaraj Singh springs a surprise with a streak one has not seen before in the characters he plays. Deepak Dobriyal has a limited number of scenes but still manages to leave an impact. So does Sanjay Mishra in a small but significant role.

This tale would spawn a franchise, bringing more action and casting more A-listers in other roles in the sequels
subsequently.

Amid all the high drama, look for four innocent teenagers who are called to the police station on a frivolous charge and end up getting embroiled in a death-defying drama of hostility, brutality, and cruelty.

Your heart will go out to this new quartet of young actors who have surrendered themselves to the film completely and live their roles with complete earnestness. It’s ‘paisa vasool’ all the way!

Film: Bholaa. Duration: 144 minutes.

Director: Ajay Devgn. Cast: Ajay Devgn, Tabu, Deepak Dobriyal, Sanjay Mishra and Gajraj Singh. Cinematography: Aseem Bajaj. Music: Ravi Basnur.

This ‘Gaslight’ glows

The word ‘Gaslight’ is used as a verb to describe an attempt to manipulate a person psychologically, thereby, ultimately, making them doubt their own sanity.

Directed by Pavan Kirpalani, this somewhat unsettling but intelligently adapted film is diabolic — and it glows on all accounts. It is the atmospheric account of a woman being driven out of her mind.

At the very onset of the narrative, we are given to understand there has been a murder. The question here is not only a whodunit but why and how? How the sustained mystery unfolds is what keeps you glued to your seat.

The prologue transfers us to Mayagarh Palace, the haveli of Ratan Singh Gaikwad, where through a clip of a home video we are shown him celebrating the birthday of his daughter Mishri aka Meesha.

Years later, after a freak accident followed by the death of her mother, a wheelchair-bound Meesha (Sara Ali Khan) returns home to reconcile with her father with whom she shared a strained relationship.

Strangely, she is welcomed home by her stepmother Rukmini (Chitrangda Singh) and the rest of the household, but Ratan Singh Gaikwad is conspicuous by his absence.

During her stay in the haveli, Meesha experiences strange happenings akin to paranormal activities, and through a campaign of false accusations, fabricated memories, and bland denials, she is projected as emotionally fragile and on the verge of losing her mind.

After suffering a series of slowly revealed and subtle attacks from her detractors, Sara Ali Khan portrays the troubled woman Meesha effectively. She conveys the anxiety, fear, and resoluteness of the character convincingly. One look into her eyes and you know what is going on in her mind.

The attractive Vikrant Massey is brilliant as Kapil, the estate manager. Similarly, Chitrandga Singh as Rukmini is intense. Both are scheming and keep you engaged with their effortless histrionics.

With a sunny disposition and a hidden agenda, Akshay Oberoi shines in a thankless but action-packed role. He brilliantly essays Rana Jai Singh, a distant cousin of Meesha. Rahul Dev as Superintendent of Police Ashok Tanwar and Shishir Sharma as the family doctor add to the repertoire of the cast.

The setting in the magnificent mansion, the locales, and the props used in the film are what make the narrative eerie and plausible.

Cinematographer Ragul Dharuman’s lens astutely captures the action and drama in all its glory. His dark frames enhance the mood of the film. At one juncture, his visuals rely heavily on symbolism and artistic imagery of the shadow, which is akin to the artistic expressionism style.

Technically the film is astutely mounted with ace production values: excellent production designs by Nikhil S. Kovale, sharp audiography and sound designed by Anirban Sengupta, and understated music by Gaurav Chatterji. Every aspect of the film is seamlessly layered by Chandan Arora’s razor-sharp edits.

Overall, the mystery’s solid construction and simplicity of design are what make this film fascinating.

Director: Pavan Kirpalani. Cast: Sara Ali Khan, Chitrangda Singh, Vikrant Massey, Rahul Dev, Akshay Oberoi, Shishir Sharma, Shataf Ahmed Figar, and Manjiri Pupala.

UN chief calls for war on garbage

0

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for war on garbage, asking humanity to stop treating planet Earth like a garbage dump.

“We are trashing our only home. We’re spewing a torrent of waste and pollution that is affecting our environment, our economies, and our health,” he told a high-level event of the UN General Assembly on the role of zero waste as a transformative solution in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, Xinhua news agency reported.

Pollution and chemicals are poisoning water, air, and soil. Meanwhile, a staggering 10 percent of all global greenhouse gas emissions come from growing, storing, and transporting food that is never used — an outrage when more than 800 million people around the world go hungry every year, and when time is running out to avoid climate catastrophe, he said.

Waste is a killer — of people, of the planet, of natural resources and ecosystems, of economies, which lose billions each year from waste. And the gobs of garbage keep growing. By 2050, municipal solid waste will double to 4 billion tons each year, said Guterres. “Garbage is laying waste to our planet. It’s time to fight back, and launch a war on waste on three fronts.”

First, polluters themselves must take the lead to mitigate, he said.

Those who produce waste must design products and services that are less resource- and material-intensive, smartly manage any waste created across all stages of their product’s lifecycle, and find creative ways to extend the lives of the products they sell. And they need to invest in waste management, recovery, and recycling systems in the communities in which they operate.

Second, there is a need to massively invest in the ability of countries, cities, and local governments to develop and scale up modern waste management systems, and policies that encourage people to re-use and recycle everything from plastic bottles to aging electronics, he said.

Third, consumers must be far more responsible, said the UN chief.

“All of us need to consider the origins and impacts of the goods and products we buy every day and rethink how we dispose of them. We need to find opportunities to reuse, recycle, repurpose, repair, and recover the products we use. And we need to think twice before throwing these items in the garbage.”

All three of these areas have the potential for massive economic benefits. Circular, zero-waste economies could save governments billions of dollars and create hundreds of thousands of jobs. But unlocking these benefits requires collaboration on a global scale, he said. “We’re making a mess of our world. It’s time to clean up. Let’s work as one to build a circular, zero-waste future — for people and the planet.”

The high-level event coincides with the first International Day of Zero Waste, which falls on March 30.

Jeet’s Bengali-Hindi film ‘Chengiz’ his first to be about the underworld

Bengali star Jeet has said that his role in the film ‘Chengiz’ is completely different from what he has done before.

In the film, the popular Bengali actor will be seen playing a stylish and ruthless mafia, Chengiz.

The film is about the underworld in Kolkata between the 70s and mid-90s. It is Jeet’s first film that revolves around the underworld and also the first Bengali film to be released in Hindi and Bengali simultaneously.

While Jeet has been part of romantic, comedy, and action films, this movie is entirely different from how he has been portrayed before.

Talking about his role, the actor said: “It was really exciting to step into Chengiz’s world which is very unlike anything I’ve attempted before. He is ruthless, he is lethal, and takes the audience through the underworld arena, a first in my career thus far.”

Jeet’s notable projects include ‘Saathi, ‘Nater Guru’, ‘Sangee’, ‘Bandhan’, ‘Yuddho’, ‘Jor’, ‘Wanted’, ‘Dui Prithibi’, ‘Boss: Born to Rule’ and ‘The Royal Bengal Tiger’, among others.

Produced by Jeet, Gopal Madnani, and Amit Jumrani, ‘Chengiz’ has been directed by Rajesh Ganguly, who has also worked on the dialogues and screenplay.

MotoGP 2023: Honda Team’s lone rider Mir prepares for Argentina Grand Prix

0

As Marc Marquez recovers from surgery, his teammate Joan Mir will be the sole representative of the Repsol Honda Team at the Gran Premio Michelin de la Republica Argentina, the season’s second Grand Prix.

Riders and teams headed immediately for the airport to begin the day-long journey from Portimao to Termas de Rio Hondo. This is the eighth occasion that the 4.81-kilometer-long circuit in the north of Argentina will host a Grand Prix event.

The 30-year-old Marc Marquez, who has won the World Championships six times, and the Repsol Honda Team have stepped onto the top step of the podium on three occasions in Argentina during 2014, 2016, and 2019 editions of the race. In 2018, Cal Crutchlow won aboard the RC213V of the LCR Honda Team.

Joan Mir also boasts a strong record in the South American circuit, only once finishing a race there outside the top five — when he was seventh in just his second Moto2 race.

Recovering from a DNF in Saturday’s Sprint Race, Mir took a solid 11th place — despite a long lap penalty. The race served as a great source of information for Mir and his team to further their understanding of the RC213V and putting together a strong and consistent weekend in Argentina is the objective.

Marc Marquez will continue his recovery from surgery on a broken first metacarpal of his right hand.

“A busy start to the year as we are already heading straight to the next race! For us, still in the learning stages, this is a positive because we are able to get more time on the bike and immediately try out some new ideas,” said Mir.

“We had a mixed weekend in Portimao, so I am hoping everything can run without incident this weekend and I can get more miles on the bike. This is the objective, to keep building and improve our speed in both races,” he was quoted as saying in a release on Thursday.

“Last year I managed a good result in Termas, so I am interested to see what we can do this year. I also want to wish Marc all the best in his recovery, it is always better to be riding alongside him on track and have hi” in the garage,” he said.

Radhika Apte unveils her character in action-comedy ‘Mrs Undercover’

Acclaimed actress Radhika Apte talks about playing a housewife and undercover agent in the spy comedy ‘Mrs Undercover’.

Radhika will play the role of Durga, a former undercover agent who turns homemaker and is called back on duty after ten years. She discovers that getting back is not easy because after marriage she has forgotten everything, having devoted all her time to her family.

The 37-year-old actress said: “For me, ‘Mrs. Undercover’ is special for many reasons. Not only is spy comedy an unexplored genre in India, but at the very first narration of this film, I fell for my character. Durga is funny, kind, and sincere, she is also clumsy and unsure of herself, and this film is her journey of discovering her own strength.”

Radhika said that every woman will relate to her on-screen character Durga as it is a story of every housewife who gives up her dreams of a career for a family.

“Every household has a Durga, a woman who quietly goes about her work and doesn’t get her due because she is considered ‘just’ a housewife,” Radhika pointed out. “This film fights that mindset which prevails in our patriarchal society, and it’s done beautifully in the guise of humor.”

Directed and written by debutant director, Anushree Mehta, ‘Mrs. Undercover’ features Radhika Apte in the lead role. It also stars Sumeet Vyas, Rajesh Sharma, and Saheb Chatterjee.

‘Mrs. Undercover’ will premiere on April 14 on ZEE5.

Solar storm from giant ‘hole’ on Sun to hit Earth on Friday: UK scientist

0

A giant “hole”, that is 20 times larger than the Earth, has appeared on the surface of the Sun, and could hurl a solar storm to Earth by Friday, the media reported.

Daniel Verscharen, Associate Professor of Space and Climate Physics at University College London, said the geomagnetic storm could be reaching Earth at a speed of about 1.8 million miles per hour, Business Insider reported.

According to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a powerful geomagnetic storm causes severe disturbances to Earth’s magnetic field, spewing solar material from coronal mass ejections (CME) – large expulsions of charged plasma from the Sun’s upper atmosphere or the corona; and also reveal stunning auroras when they reach the Earth.

“The shape of this coronal hole is not particularly special. However, its location makes it very interesting,” Verscharen was quoted as saying.

“I would expect some fast wind from that coronal hole to come to Earth around Friday night into Saturday morning of this week,” he said.

This comes after NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, earlier this week, spotted a giant, black region of the sun — called a coronal hole.

According to Mathew Owens, a professor of Space Physics at the University of Reading, such holes are more likely to appear, because the Sun is gearing up to a peak of activity, which happens about every 11 years.

“This one being at the equator means we’re pretty much guaranteed to see some fast wind at Earth a couple of days after it rotates past the central meridian,” he was quoted as saying.

However, he said: “I doubt it will result in too much excitement. Unless we just so happen to get an Earth-directed CME around the same time.”

Hindi remake of Rajamouli’s ‘Chatrapathi’ set for May 12 release

The official Hindi remake of S.S. Rajamouli’s 2005 Telugu blockbuster ‘Chatrapathi’, which also marks the big Bollywood debut of Telugu actor Sreenivas Bellamkonda, is all set for a pan-India release on May 12.

The action-packed teaser of ‘Chatrapathi’, which was dropped on Thursday, introduces the key character essayed by Bellamkonda, who pulls out all the stops for a perfect Bollywood launch with high-octane action and jaw-dropping stunts.

Says Bellamkonda: “I am happy to make my Bollywood debut with a special film like ‘Chatrapathi’, which is a thrilling and engaging mass action entertainer. Every moment working on this film was as exciting as it was challenging and we are happy to finally present it to audiences across India.”

The film is the official Hindi remake of S.S. Rajamouli’s Telugu blockbuster ‘Chatrapathi’ and is written by his father and veteran writer, V. Vijayendra Prasad, who’s known for his notable work in films such as ‘RRR’, ‘Baahubali series and ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’.

The big-ticket, large-canvas action entertainer is being produced by Jayantilal Gada of Pen Studios and directed by V.V. Vinayak.

Gada said: “S.S. Rajamouli’s ‘Chatrapathi’ was an ideal project to reimagine for a pan-India audience. Apart from introducing the extremely talented Sreenivas Bellamkonda to an entirely new market, the film also has all the essential components of a mainstream entertainer.”

‘Chatrapathi’ tells the story of a man who rises against oppression to become the savior of immigrants subjected to massive exploitation.

Formula 2: India’s Jehan Daruvala eyes double-podium repeat in Melbourne

0

Indian racer Jehan Daruvala will be hoping to conjure up some Melbourne magic and score a repeat of his Jeddah double podium as the Formula 2 championship heads to Australia for some weekend action.

The 24-year-old, who races for Dutch team MP Motorsport, was the only driver to finish both races of the Jeddah round in the top three and will be hoping to repeat the Jeddah story as the F2 Championships heads to the historic Albert Park circuit for the newest fixture on the calendar.

The podium reignited Daruvala’s championship hopes, propelling him to fifth in the overall standings and the young Indian will be looking to build further momentum behind his title tilt at the lakeside street track this weekend.

“I am really looking forward to racing at the Albert Park circuit. It’s a historic and challenging track and it’s great to see it join the F2 calendar. None of us have ever raced around here before so the learning curve will be incredibly steep. Nevertheless, it’s going to be the same for everyone,” said Daruvala.

“For our part, we’ve just focused on ourselves and prepared the best we can. Variable weather, with rain expected on Friday and Saturday, will add an extra element of unpredictability and excitement to the mix. But we finally showed our hand in terms of pace in Jeddah and I’m confident we can be quick here again this weekend,” Daruvala said.

The 5.2-km long Albert Park circuit in the heart of Melbourne predominantly comprises medium-speed corners, fast straights and a handful of tight, twisting turns.

The track layout, which has hosted Formula One since 1996, was tweaked last year to aid overtaking. Formula 2, as a support series to Formula One, will race around that same layout, which will also feature four DRS zones to further improve overtaking.

Over its years of hosting F1, the track has acquired a reputation for serving up thrillers and upsets. A step into the unknown for Formula 2, teams and drivers will also have to be wary of Melbourne’s fickle autumn weather, which can turn the form book on its head.

Formula 2 track action will kick off on Friday with practice and qualifying. The shorter Sprint race will take place on Saturday with the main Feature race to be held on Sunday ahead of the Formula One Grand Prix.

Nanobots to help humans become immortal by 2030: Ex-Google scientist

0

Humans will attain immortality with the help of nanorobots in just seven years, former Google scientist Ray Kurzweil has claimed.

The 75-year-old computer scientist has been a futurist with a track record of accurate predictions. So far, about 86 percent of his 147 predictions have been correct.

Kurzweil made the claim in a YouTube video posted by tech vlogger Adagio where he discussed expansion in genetics, nanotechnology, robotics, and more.

In the two-part video interview, the scientist emphasized his claim made in the 2005 book ‘The Singularity Is Near’ where he predicted that technology will allow humans to enjoy an everlasting life by 2030, New York Post reported.

Kurzweil said he believes that with the current level of technological advances and expansions seen in the field of genetics, robotics, and nanotechnology “we’ll soon have nanobots running through our veins”.

Nanobots are tiny robots, 50-100 nm wide, currently used in research as DNA probes, cell imaging materials, and cell-specific delivery vehicles.

Kurzweil believes that nanorobots will also help fend off aging and illness and repair human bodies on a cellular level. He also claims that such nanotechnology will allow people to eat whatever they want while staying thin and energized.

“Nanobots in the digestive tract and bloodstream will intelligently extract the precise nutrients we need, call for needed additional nutrients and supplements through our personal wireless local area network, and send the rest of the food we eat on its way to being passed through for elimination,” Kurzweil suggested in a 2003 blog post.

Previously, he correctly predicted in 1990 that a computer would beat humans in chess by 2000, with the growth of the Internet, and the shift to more wireless technology.

World’s third largest cricket stadium to come up in Jaipur

0

Vedanta’s Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL) has signed an MoU with the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) for the development of the world’s third-largest cricket stadium in Chonp village in Jaipur.

Vedanta’s HZL will spend Rs 300 crore on the stadium, one of the largest corporate investments in India’s sports infrastructure. The international stadium will be named after Anil Agarwal, the founder, and chairman of Vedanta Resources Limited.

To be spread over 100 acres of land with a seating capacity of 75,000 people, it will be the third largest stadium in the world after the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad and the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia.

The MoU was signed by Bhawani Shankar Samota, Secretary, Rajasthan Cricket Association, and Arun Misra, CEO, Hindustan Zinc, in the presence of C.P. Joshi, Speaker, Rajasthan Assembly, and Chief Patron, RCA; Priya Agarwal Hebbar, Chairperson, Hindustan Zinc and Non-Executive Director, Vedanta Ltd; and Vaibhav Gehlot, President, RCA.

The stadium facilities will be spread across 100 acres and have a seating capacity of over 75,000. In terms of the size of the playing field area, this stadium would be the largest in the world.

On this occasion, Joshi expressed happiness at the generous offer from HZL and the signing of the MOU. He said that this would accomplish the long-felt dream of constructing of a modern International Cricket Stadium at Jaipur. He thanked Anil Agarwal and Priya Agarwal Hebbar for their support and MOU for the 1st Phase of the Stadium. He hoped the 2nd Phase of the stadium would also be supported by Vedanta. The new stadium would develop the talent of new players. He also hoped that Vedanta would help young entrepreneurs to come up in Rajasthan.

Vaibhav Gehlot highlighted the history and achievements of RCA. He hoped that similar support would be forthcoming for the construction work of the second phase and also thanked the State Government for allotting 100 acres of land for the stadium at concessional rates.

Former Sri Lanka cricketer Kumar Sangakkara, Head Coach of Rajasthan Royals, expressed happiness at the construction of the proposed stadium. He hoped that this venture would give encouragement to the new talent.

Vedanta Chairman, Anil Agarwal, shared his vision for this contribution, “Sport gives us the best life lessons in leadership, teamwork, competition, and hunger to succeed. If India’s youth participates wholeheartedly with energy and passion, nurtured by world-class infrastructure, they will become an unbeatable talent pool. Vedanta dedicates this stadium and its facilities to new India. Let’s play.”

Speaking on the occasion, Priya Agarwal Hebbar said, “Cricket is a national passion. We are proud and privileged to have the opportunity to set up this world-class facility which will benefit players and spectators. India has huge potential as a sporting nation. Vedanta and HZL are committed to creating a best-in-class enabling environment for the flourishing of our country’s talent and interest in sports.”

The stadium will be completed in phases. A 40,000 capacity is set to be completed by October 2023. The overall project of the first phase will cost Rs. 400 crores, out of which Rs. 300 crores will be borne by Hindustan Zinc Limited and the remaining amount of Rs. 100 crores will be taken care of by RCA.

The stadium will have an indoor games facility, training centers for other sports, a clubhouse, and parking for three and a half thousand vehicles. She also assured of support from HZL towards the construction of the second phase of the stadium with a 35000 capacity.

The Anil Agarwal International Cricket Stadium will host national and international matches, including games of the IPL. The stadium and its facilities will help the development of Rajasthan as a major hub for cricket and other sports.
