Google has confirmed that it will be shutting down the app responsible for the Jacquard accessories made by the company’s Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) group in April.
Jacquard, a full-scale digital technology platform created for smart apparel, footwear, and other everyday essentials, was unveiled by Google in 2015 and debuted two years later on special jackets from Levi’s, reports 9to5Google.
Google’s Jacquard technology can embed touch sensors and haptic feedback into clothing, which can then be paired with a smartphone.
In effect, these smart jackets — and later smart Yves Saint Laurent backpacks — allowed users to perform specific (customizable) tasks on their phones without ever touching them.
A double-tap, for example, could play/pause music, brushing the smart fabric could change tracks, and briefly covering the sensor would mute/unmute notifications, the report said.
Several companies have released products that incorporate Google Jacquard since its initial release.
Last year, Google shut down Duplex on the Web, a technology that enables Google Assistant to automate certain user tasks for site visitors.
The company introduced Duplex on the Web during its 2019 Google I/O developer conference.
Duplex on the Web enables Google Assistant to perform different actions on the sites.

Actress Chitrangda Singh, who will be seen next in ‘Gaslight’, says she messaged actor Saif Ali Khan to talk about working with his actress-daughter Sara Ali Khan.
The actress was working with Saif Ali Khan in the 2018 film ‘Baazaar’ when Sara made her debut in the film industry with ‘Kedarnath’, starring late actor Sushant Singh Rajput.
Having worked with both father and daughter, Chitrangda was all praises for them.
Talking about this, Chitrangda Singh said, “It’s so strange that she (Sara Ali Khan) was doing her first film at that time when Saif Ali Khan and I were shooting for a film and now I am working with her.”
“I messaged Saif saying how wonderful his daughter is and how happy I was to work with her. She is lovely and has great energy on set. I had a great time working with both of them.”

Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra believes that Virat Kohli redefined the batting in T20 cricket during his sensational 2016 IPL season.
Kohli had solidified his name as one of the greatest batters in the history of the cash-rich tournament during his incredible 2016 season. He scored 973 runs in that edition, the highest ever in a single edition, in the tournament’s illustrious history.
“If you looked at Virat Kohli the batter before that, you knew he could get you runs but nobody looked at him as a quintessential rockstar T20 batter. He was more of a collector, and grafter, maybe he would hit boundaries, but very rarely would you see him take the aerial route and hit five sixes in ten balls. He was not that kind of a player. Virat Kohli redefined the batting in T20 cricket in that particular season,” said Chopra on the JioCinema show’s Insiders Preview.
“He proved that you can play T20 cricket with proper technique, even with that, not one or two, but he scored four centuries. That season was just phenomenal, he was a man possessed,” he added.
The former India captain got his start in the IPL with the Royal Challengers Bangalore in their inaugural season and played in the very first IPL match contested between RCB and the Kolkata Knight Riders from there has gone on to become the player with the most runs in IPL till date.
Anil Kumble, who was also a part of the RCB squad in the inaugural season recalled a young Kohli and said: “He was very confident when he walked into the dressing room and you could see the talent as soon as you watched him at the nets.”
“The one good thing that has happened to Virat is that there were a lot of U-19 youngsters who got into IPL franchises that year, but he got a chance in the first game. That’s very important because when you’re doing well as a 19-year-old and you get that break in your first season, you are not even thinking about the massive players in the dressing room.
You are soaking in that atmosphere and getting involved in the match and that is exactly what happened with Virat. From there on, not just he, but the team had a tough year in 2008 and we did well in 2009. Virat continued from there on and then he became captain later on. It’s wonderful as a 19-year-old to walk into any team and get the opportunity that he did,” added Kumble.
Alongside Kumble, Virat also had the veteran eye of Zaheer Khan watching over him in the RCB locker room. Khan elaborated on the change he saw in Kohli over the years.
“One thing that stands out is Virat’s appetite to learn and how quickly he went on adding things to his game and his approach to the game. He knew that once he had the responsibility of being the captain, he can’t be doing the things he was doing earlier like just going too much in the face of opposition. You need to have that control and maturity as a leader, he added. That was something that wasn’t there if you look at the initial part of his journey,” Zaheer said.
“One thing which he really made a difference with was that he brought in that culture of looking after yourself. If you look at how he was in 2008, a chubby kid full of energy, to become a very lean, mean person who is adding on that other side to the game. Everybody would do their routines to get themselves ready for the big stage but he went a notch or two higher than that,” he added.

Amazon has made its low-bandwidth, long-range wireless network Sidewalk accessible to outside developers, which powers some of its own devices such as Ring doorbells and Echo speakers.
By using the Sidewalk test kit, developers can now check their local signal strength on a map to determine whether their devices will connect to the network before developing a product, reports TechCrunch.
Amazon Sidewalk is a shared network that helps devices work better at home and beyond the front door, designed to connect low-power, long-range, low-data devices to the Internet.
This means Sidewalk can connect devices that aren’t within Bluetooth or Wi-Fi range.
“We’ve rapidly built out a long-range, low-bandwidth network that now covers more than 90 per cent of the US population, and this is an open invitation for developers to put it to the test,” Dave Limp, senior vice president of Amazon Devices & Services, was quoted as saying.
“Many types of connected devices have been limited by the range of Wi-Fi and the cost of cellular technology, which has hindered the ability to connect devices like environmental sensors, leak detectors, and smart locks. The sidewalk is designed to provide a secure, low-cost way to invent and connect a whole new range of devices, and we can’t wait to see what developers build,” he added.
Meanwhile, Amazon will be shutting down its go-to camera reviews website “DPReview” in the near future after nearly 25 years of operation.
“The site will remain active until April 10, and the editorial team is still working on reviews and looking forward to delivering some of our best-ever content,” said Scott Everett, General Manager of DPReview.com.
Viacom18, the digital broadcasters of IPL 2023, on Wednesday announced a star-studded panel of experts who will present their views on the game and things around it during the two-month long tournament, which will be played from March 31 to May 28.
Suresh Raina, Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, Anil Kumble, Robin Uthappa, RP Singh, Eoin Morgan, Parthiv Patel and Scott Styris are among the stars in the panel who will provide in-depth coverage of the 2023 IPL across 16 feeds.
Joining them would be a battery of superstars including Zaheer Khan, Brett Lee, Graeme Smith, Graeme Swann among others. Raina and Uthappa also have been part of multiple TATA IPL-winning campaigns while Gayle holds the record for highest individual score in the IPL with his 175 not out.

Ahead of IPL 2023, Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma on Wednesday said that a replacement for injured pacer Jasprit Bumrah will be decided by the team in the next few days.
Bumrah has been out of action since September 2022 due to a recurring back injury and underwent surgery earlier this month.
It will be the first time in a decade that Bumrah will not be a part of the IPL.
“Regarding Bumrah’s replacement, we’ve been discussing a few options. Hopefully, we can close it down in the next couple of days and then we see how we will go about it,” Rohit said in the pre-season press conference.
“We have been talking about Bumrah. He is a big miss. Jasprit Bumrah’s role was quite important for Mumbai Indians, it’s a big shoe to fill. But it gives someone else an opportunity for the youngsters in the team to showcase their talent. We have a couple of guys who have been with this team for the last few years. They are very much ready to take the centrestage and hopefully can blood in some youngsters,” he added.
With no Bumrah and Jhye Richardson, Mumbai’s fast-bowling stocks are thin. But the presence of England pacer Jofra Archer is something which has delighted Rohit.
Archer had missed last year’s season due to elbow and back injuries.
“Jofra was always part of this team. Last year, he was but was injured. We all know the quality he has. But we will sadly miss Bumrah this season. But again, a lot of opportunities are up for grabs, and if someone’s missing out, then someone can fill in that place,” Mumbai Indians skipper said.
“We do understand how big a miss Bumrah is, but a lot of younger players will get their opportunity and this is the platform for all the young players to come out and express themselves,” he added.
Mark Boucher, the head coach of Mumbai, is hopeful that Archer and the young bowlers in the side will shine in Bumrah’s absence.
“Our bowling attack is quite exciting for me. I would say, it’s of an unknown quantity. Losing Bumrah is a big blow for us; I will be honest with that. But losing a player means sometimes you get opportunities. But the way the side has picked players in the last few years is to have a couple of players who can be back-ups and be the ones for the future,” Boucher said.
“Now is the time for those youngsters to show up and grab their opportunities. For me, from a bowling point of view for this IPL season is, you have got the experience and you have got the juniors to really show their skills. Jofra’s been playing recently. Hopefully, he can kick-start the IPL with a bang,” he added.
Amongst the young bowlers, there is left-arm pace all-rounder Arjun Tendulkar, who is yet to play in the IPL.
“Arjun Tendulkar is playing good cricket in recent times. He was injured but today he will start bowling,” said Rohit to him.
Boucher, too, agreed with Rohit’s views. “Arjun has been playing good cricket for some time, he is bowling well, and we are thinking that he will play in the playing XI this year.”
Mumbai Indians, the five-time IPL champions, will open their IPL 2023 campaign against Royal Challengers Bangalore at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on April 2.
Apple has introduced its Pay Later service in the US which allows users to split purchases into four payments with zero interest and no fees.
“Users can easily track, manage, and repay their Apple Pay Later loans in one convenient location in Apple Wallet,” the tech giant said in a blog post on Tuesday.
Users can apply for $50 to $1,000 Apple Pay Later loans, which they can use for online and in-app purchases made on their iPhone or iPad at stores that support Apple Pay.
The iPhone maker is inviting select users to access a pre-release version of the Pay Later service, with plans to provide it to all eligible users in the coming months.
“Apple Pay Later was designed with our users’ financial health in mind, so it has no fees and no interest and can be used and managed within Wallet, making it easier for consumers to make informed and responsible borrowing decisions,” Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, said.
The transaction and loan information of users using Pay Later will never be shared or sold to third parties for marketing or advertising purposes.
Also, the purchases are authenticated using Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode.
“Apple Pay Later is enabled through the Mastercard Installments program, so merchants that accept Apple Pay do not need to do anything to implement Apple Pay Later for their customers,” the company said.

World No.7 Elena Rybakina defeated Italy’s Martina Trevisan 6-3, 6-0 to advance to her third semifinal of the season at the Miami Open. The victory extended Rybakina’s current win streak to 12.
Rybakina is now two wins away from becoming the fifth woman to complete the “Sunshine Double”, sweeping back-to-back titles at Indian Wells and Miami in a single season.
The 23-year-old captured her first WTA 1000 title two weeks ago at Indian Wells, defeating World No.2 Aryna Sabalenka in the final to win her biggest title since Wimbledon.
“For sure I don’t have any pressure. I know that it’s very difficult and not many players did it. Plus I was match point down in the other match, so I really don’t think so far in the draw,” Rybakina said after her win on Tuesday night.
“I just need to focus match by match, and I have a tough opponent. Of course, it would be amazing to achieve something like that, but it’s still far away,” she added.
Rybakina will face either World No.3 Jessica Pegula or Anastasia Potapova in the semifinals on Thursday. She is now 20-4 on the season, matching Sabalenka for the tour lead in match wins.
In their first meeting on tour, Rybakina’s offense proved too much for the crafty Italian. Making her main draw debut in Miami, Trevisan came through the section of the draw vacated by No.1 Iga Swiatek and became the first Italian to reach the quarter-final stage in Miami since 2013.
The Kazakhstani tennis player earned the first break of the match on a Trevisan double-fault to lead 3-1. Trevisan broke back to get back on serve at 4-3, but Rybakina did not give up a single game from there. With Trevisan struggling to get the ball out of Rybakina’s strike zone, Rybakina settled in and reeled off eight consecutive games to close out the 69-minute victory.

Prices in shops across the UK have increased at a record pace in March, especially food prices, said the British Retail Consortium (BRC).
According to the BRC, prices have yet to peak, reports a media news agency.
Shop price annual inflation accelerated to a record 8.9 percent in March — up from 8.4 per cent in February, the BRC said on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, food price inflation soared to 15 percent in March, up from 14.5 percent in February.
This is also the highest inflation rate on record in the food category, said the BRC.
Helen Dickinson, BRC’s Chief Executive, warned that although food prices will likely ease in the coming months as the country enters the growing season, “wider inflation is expected to remain high”.
The ongoing cost-of-living crisis has also changed the habits of UK shoppers.
“Retailers have seen more visits but less basket spend, as shoppers manage their weekly food bills by shopping little and more often and seeking out the lowest prices,” said Mike Watkins, head of retail and business insight at NielsenIQ.
Last week, official data from the Office for National Statistics showed the Consumer Prices Index unexpectedly rose by 10.4 percent in the 12 months to February, up from 10.1 percent in January.

South Korea’s mandatory Covid-19 isolation period is expected to be reduced to five days from the current seven starting in early May as the government is considering downgrading the virus to a lower infection level.
Covid-19 has been classified as a “serious” disease since February 2020, and a classification downgrade to an “alert” level means that infected people will be required to isolate for five days, reports Yonhap News Agency.
A decision on whether to downgrade it will be made in early May, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo said during a Covid-19 response meeting on Wednesday.
“The long fight against Covid-19, which has lasted for more than three years, is nearing an end. It was a difficult process, but thanks to the participation of the people, patience, and dedication of medical workers, we were able to get here,” he added.
If virus situations continue to stabilize after a downgrade of the disease category for Covid-19 in May, the government will also downgrade the virus’ infection level to Class 4 from Class 2, Han said.
Currently, the virus infection level is on par with chickenpox or measles, and Class 4, categorized as the lowest level, includes the seasonal flu.
When Covid-19 is categorized as Class 4, the government will fully lift a mask mandate and abolish mandatory isolation for infected people, Han said.
Earlier this month, the government ended the mask mandate for public transportation, lifting one of the last-remaining Covid-19 restrictions.
The mask mandate remains in place for medical facilities, pharmacies, and facilities vulnerable to infections.

Humza Yousaf has been officially elected as Scotland’s sixth First Minister, with a majority of 71 out of 128 votes in Parliament.
The 37-year-old is Scotland’s youngest-ever head of government, the first from an ethnic minority background as well as the first Muslim to lead a major UK party, reports Xinhua news agency.
Shona Robison, the current Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice, will be Yousaf’s, Deputy First Minister.
He will be sworn into office at a ceremony on Wednesday.
He replaces Nicola Sturgeon, who announced her resignation last month.
Sturgeon formally stepped down on Tuesday morning as the longest-serving First Minister in Scotland, after more than eight years in office.
She was also the first woman to hold the position.
Following the vote on Tuesday, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called Yousaf to congratulate him, reports the BBC.
He said he wanted to continue “working constructively with the Scottish government” to deliver on what he argued was the “people’s priorities across Scotland, including the need to half inflation, delivering growth, and cut waiting times.”
Yousaf has pledged to push for another referendum on Scottish independence, saying that the government’s priorities will be delivered more effectively when Scotland is independent.
He said in his victory speech that he will make Scotland a “fairer and wealthier” place.
He became the head of the Scottish National Party, Scotland’s ruling Party, after winning the leadership election on Monday.
