7.7 mn victims of violence in Colombia in need of relief: UN

0

The number of people in Colombia affected by violent clashes and needing aid has risen to 7.7 million, UN humanitarians said.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said 40 percent of those needing relief last year came from the indigenous community, reports Xinhua news agency.

They are only 4 percent of the total population of about 52 million.

The humanitarian office said more than 25,000 people from the Afro-Colombian and indigenous communities were newly displaced or forcibly confined due to violence since the beginning of this year.

The government and OCHA earlier this month launched a $283 million humanitarian response plan to reach 1.6 million people, primarily women, children, people with disabilities, and indigenous people.

In 2022, more than 202,000 people in Colombia were forcibly displaced or confined, largely because of violence by illegal armed groups, according to the OCHA.

Some 119,000 people were confined to their homes or villages for more than a week last year, the highest number since the UN humanitarian agency began monitoring humanitarian crises in Colombia in 2008.

Almost 74,000 people were forcibly displaced because of violence, according to the OCHA’s monitoring system, indicating a reduction compared to 2021.

0

Telangana and Andhra Pradesh chief ministers have greeted Muslims at the beginning of the holy month of Ramzan.

On the auspicious occasion of the beginning of the fasting month with the sighting of a new crescent, Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao extended greetings to the Muslim community in Telangana state and across the country.

KCR said that the auspicious month of Ramzan inculcates discipline, charity, and charitable thinking and inspires an ideal life. He said that the holy month of Ramzan inculcates spirituality through the recitation of the Quran, prayers, fasting, and charity programs like Zakat and Fitra.

The chief minister said in a statement that recitation of the Quran helps to understand the ultimate meaning of life. He wished that the holy month of Ramzan would bring light to the lives of the people and that all the people would prosper with happiness.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy also greeted Muslims in both the Telugu states at the beginning of Ramzan. He said that in Ramzan, during which the holy Quran was revealed to Prophet Mohammad, Muslims observe fast for the entire month with discipline to seek the mercy of Almighty Allah.

He observed that discipline, philanthropy, and spirituality are the key messages of Ramzan.

Reddy also noted that while observing the fast and spending the month with divine thought, Muslims spend a part of their wealth towards charity for the poor.

“Ramzan is the month which teaches eradication of bad feelings, injustice, and hatred and inspires one to work for the welfare of mankind,” he said.

Director Pradeep Sarkar, who is known for films like ‘Parineeta’, ‘Mardaani’, the web series ‘Duranga’ and others, passed away at a Mumbai hospital at the age of 67.

He was on dialysis and his potassium levels had dropped drastically. As his condition deteriorated, he was rushed to the hospital at 3:00 a.m. on March 24 and passed away at 3.30 a.m.

Funeral arrangements have been made at a crematorium in Santacruz for 4 p.m. on Friday.

Several members of the film fraternity expressed their grief and shared condolences.

Taking to Twitter, actor Ajay Devgn wrote: “The news of Pradeep Sarkar’s demise, ‘Dada’ to some of us is still hard to digest. My deepest condolences (flower bouquet). My prayers are with the departed and his family. RIP Dada.”

‘The Kashmir Files’ director Vivek Agnihotri shared a statement on Twitter. It read: “It is with a heavy heart that we inform you that Pradeep has departed for his heavenly abode. Please join us at 4 p.m. for his funeral at Santacruz Hindu Crematorium to say goodbye to him.”

Actor Neil Nitin Mukesh, who worked with the director in ‘Lafangey Parindey’, shared pictures with Pradeep on Twitter. He said, “DADA!!! Why??? I’ll miss you dada. Will always remember you as that child-hearted, full-of-life man who taught me so much. Your creation ‘Lafangey Parindey’ will always remain close to my heart. My prayers with the family.”

Actor Tahir Raj Bhasin, who played the antagonist in Pradeep Sarkar’s ‘Mardaani’, said in a statement: ‘Woke up to the extremely sad news of passing away of Pradeep Dada. I will always remember him with eternal gratitude as the man who trusted me with Mardaani. He was a maestro whose experience and guidance gave me the confidence to act to my fullest potential in my debut film. He mentored and then gave me space to create a part and in this trust lay his genius. I remember being extremely nervous on day one of the shoots.”

He further mentioned: “It was a production heavy day, we were holding up traffic and there were 100 junior artists on set. An intimidating environment for a first-timer. After my first take, I waited with bated breath as he watched the monitor. After what seemed like an eternity, he yelled out for the entire set to hear, “that was great!”. Just that validation from your first director still rings in my ears when I walk onto a set to this day. He was a visionary par excellence, ahead of his time. He lives on in the films he created. May he rest in peace.”

BYJU’s, Aakash deny merger talks with rival Unacademy

0

Edtech major BYJU’s on Friday denied reports that it is considering a merger of rival Gaurav Munjal-run Unacademy into Aakash Educational Services.

Reacting to a Money Control report which said, citing sources, that SoftBank-backed Unacademy is in talks for a potential merger with BYJU’s-owned Aakash, the company denied any such move.

“We strongly deny that BYJU’S is considering a merger of Unacademy into Aakash Educational Services. As a parent company, BYJU’S is committed to investing in the growth of Aakash Educational Services, which is growing at more than 50 percent year-on-year,” a BYJU spokesperson said in a statement.

“Aakash is a market leader in our segment with an impeccable track record of delivery and results and we are focused on our organic growth and delivery to the lakhs of students that have trusted us,” the Aakash spokesperson added.

Unacademy declined to comment on the development.

Meanwhile, Byju Raveendran-run BYJU is in the advanced stages to raise $250 million at a flat valuation (at $22 billion the company last announced) as it struggles to repay a $1.2 billion term loan and turn profitable in 2023.

The latest funding round is in the “final stages of discussion and will be closed soon within a few weeks”, according to sources.

BYJU’s also declined to immediately comment on the development.

People didn’t forgive Rahul in 2019, will also punish in 2024: Nadda

BJP chief J.P. Nadda slammed Rahul Gandhi on Friday by highlighting all the remarks that he made from the 2019 Lok Sabha election to date.

Nadda said the people of India did not forgive him in 2019 and will severely punish him in 2024 as well.

In a seven-thread tweet, Nadda expressed his disappointment with the Congress leader.

“By comparing OBC communities to thieves, Mr. @RahulGandhi has shown a pathetic and casteist mindset. However, his latest tirade is not surprising. For the last many years, he has always reduced levels of political discourse. Let me explain how in the thread below.

“Lies, personal slander, and negative politics are integral to Mr. @RahulGandhi. Let us go back to the time before 2019 – he was the newly minted Congress President and through the pre-election season his core issue was – the cooked Rafale scam. Wherever he went he spoke of it.

“Mr. @RahulGandhi’s negative politics and cooked-up Rafale scam faced a setback in the court of law. Our highest court of the land, the Honourable Supreme Court gave a very clear verdict on the Rafale issue and did not believe the corruption bogey Mr. Gandhi raised.

“Mr. @RahulGandhi’s acerbic Chowkidar Chor Hai remarks were also not appreciated by the Supreme Court and for that HE APOLOGIZED.

“In the run-up to 2019 polls, @RahulGandhi kept repeating – Chowkidar Chor Hai notwithstanding the harm he was doing to political discourse. He went on ranting against PM @narendramodi even if it meant he was defeated in his own seat and his party wiped out nationally.

“So much for Chowkidar Chor Hai that neither Congress leaders nor Congress allies appreciated this deep slander against PM @narendramodi. In fact, this issue was also taken up in CWC where the senior Congress leaders even supposedly expressed their unhappiness on it.

“Now, Mr. @RahulGandhi calls the entire OBC community thieves. He gets flak in the Courts but he refuses to apologize thus showing how deep-rooted his hatred for OBCs is. The people of India did not forgive him in 2019…in 2024 the punishment will be more severe.”

Oppn vs govt stalemate to continue in Parliament today

A stalemate is likely to continue in Parliament on Friday with the opposition continuing with its demand for a JPC in the Hindenburg-Adani row, while the BJP will carry on pressing for an apology from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his remarks made in London.

Opposition MPs will on Friday move suspension of business notices in the Rajya Sabha and adjournment notices in the Lok Sabha on the Adani issue.

The Thursday meeting of the floor leaders at the Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar’s chamber in Parliament premises could not end the impasse as both sides remained rigid on their demands.

Dhankhar rejected the suspension of business notices given by the members of the opposition on the demand of JPC in the Adani issue.

Following this, Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge said that the stalemate can only end with the constitution of the JPC.

On his part, Leader of the House Piyush Goyal said that Rahul Gandhi should apologize for his London statement.

Dhankar said both sides are rigid and should hold a dialogue to end the stalemate.

When ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ director met Raghu, he had no control over his trunk

Making your first film is always special. But what happens when your directorial debut goes on to clinch an Academy Award? Feels surreal, doesn’t it? That’s what the Oscar-winning filmmaker Kartiki Gonsalves is experiencing after her short documentary ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ bagged the Oscar for Best Documentary Short at the 95th edition of the Academy Awards.

Kartiki, who has been a natural history photographer and can conjure up haunting frames with her composition (one look at her Instagram will leave you floored), made her debut with the short film, a short film which took five years in the making. But, all good things take time and when they come to fruition, the world witnesses their power.

Kartiki is hopeful that this win will push many aspiring filmmakers to tell the story that they yearn to tell. She shared with Media, “I hope this paves the way for young filmmakers who are scared about not having the funding to make a film. I would tell them, just go out there with the conviction of telling the stories that they want to tell to the world and things will fall into place. Your story will help you connect, just work on your craft and give your best.”

Talking about the cameras and the lenses she used to create such enchanting photography for the screen, the filmmaker excitedly told IANS, “We started with Sony FS7 Mark II, FS5 Mark II, A7R III, A7S III. We used all lenses ranging from 16-35 mm, 70-200 mm, 200-600 mm, and 50 to 90 mm for the macro shots.”

During the course of six years, Kartiki not just changed as a storyteller, she rather grew up with Raghu — the baby elephant from her film that has been garnering love on the internet.

She said, “Watching an elephant calf grow from three months to 6.5 years, it’s a journey of its own, it’s something else altogether. I spent a lot of time with the young elephants during the making of this film. Earlier, I was subjected to experiencing very large elephants throughout my life. The first time I visited the Theppakadu camps was when I was three years- old. So, I have been in and out of these forests.”

Raghu’s trunk has a character of its own, it has a certain playfulness, innocence, and sometimes resistant firmness when he doesn’t eat upon being fed. Talking about the aspect of his trunk and its portrayal in the film, Kartiki walked down memory lane as she reminisced about the time when Raghu had no control over his trunk, “When I first met Raghu, he had no control over his trunk. When you see large elephants, they’re very majestic and graceful, but to see a baby elephant figuring out what to do with his trunk, watching them run around and fall, it was refreshing and inspiring for me and that got channeled into what we see on the screen.”

The film boasts of stellar photography, the geometry in the frames, the artwork on the elephants during the festivals, and of course, the colors. When asked about her thought process behind bringing all these together, she said, “The place where we shot the film, is home to me. I have grown up watching its beautiful elements and I have always wanted to share these with an audience about how my home looks. In a way, this film is a tribute to the place where I come from and my family and our traditions. I wanted my photography to project our local culture to the world and I am so glad and so humble that it happened.”

Talking about the film’s location, she further mentioned, “Mudumalai Tiger Reserve is surrounded by the Nilgiri hills which are much older than the Himalayas. You cannot help but just get blown away by the beauty of it even as a creative person who’s just trying to do their work.”

“It’s home to so many species, it’s the largest reserve for Asian elephants, it’s home to many tigers, and is a rich biodiversity zone. In my home in Ooty, we have leopards roaming around our house freely. I have installed tracker cameras to monitor their movement. All this ecosystem I wanted to show to the audience,” she concluded.

Aus police launch probe into manhandling of Indigenous Senator

0

Australian police have launched a probe into the manhandling of Indigenous Senator Lidia Thorpe who was allegedly thrown to the ground at a protest outside Parliament in Canberra, the media reported on Friday.

British activist Kellie-Jay Keen-Minshull, who describes herself as a women’s rights activist, but is also widely known for her opposition to transgender rights, was holding a “Let Women Speak” rally attended by a small number of supporters, the Media reported.

It had attracted a larger counter-protest by pro-LGBT activists.

As she spoke, Thorpe was seen approaching the microphone area shouting “you’re not welcome here” before being pushed back by a man in a suit, and then apparently pulled to the ground by police.

Police attempted to get her back on her feet but the Senator shouted “let me go”, before breaking free and crawling away across the wet grass, and then standing up and walking off.

Addressing reporters after the incident, Thorpe said that “we do not tolerate this kind of filth being on Ngunnawal-Ngarigo country”, referring to Keen-Minshull’s group’s presence on Aboriginal land.

“They are racist. They are homophobic. They are destroying people’s lives. This country should be ashamed that they even let people like this into this country,” the BBC quoted the Senator as saying

Thorpe later told the Guardian she had been “pulverized” by police.

In a statement, the police said “interactions” between the police and protesters at the event would be reviewed.

Legacy Twitter Blue badges to be removed from April 1, pay Rs 9,400 a year in India

0

Elon Musk on Friday said that Twitter will remove all legacy Blue verified checkmarks for both individual users and organizations from April 1. Twitter Blue in India will cost Rs 9,400 a year for individual users.

Twitter Blue is now available globally and the users can get Blue Verified for $7 a month if they sign up via web browser, Musk announced.

“On April 1, we will begin winding down our legacy verified program and removing legacy verified check marks. To keep your blue checkmark on Twitter, individuals can sign up for Twitter Blue,” said the company.

One can sign up to get a blue checkmark, prioritized ranking in conversations, half ads, long Tweets, Bookmark Folders, custom navigation, Edit Tweet, Undo Tweet, and more.

Currently, individual Twitter users who have verified blue check marks are those paying for Twitter Blue, which in the US costs $8 a month via the web and $11 a month through the in-app payment on iOS and Android.

Musk had time and again said that the company will remove all Blue checks, as it gets busy monetizing its platform by charging users.

“Twitter’s legacy Blue Verified is unfortunately deeply corrupted, so will sunset in a few months,” he had said.

Twitter has also allowed Blue subscribers to create long tweets of up to 4,000 characters.

Twitter Blue subscribers will also see 50 percent fewer ads in their home timelines.

For companies and brands, Twitter recently introduced a gold check mark and has shifted government accounts to a gray check mark.

Twitter reportedly told businesses to pay $1,000 per month for retaining gold badges and brands and organizations which do not pay the money will lose their checkmarks.
