Death toll from Greece train crash rises to 38

0

The death toll from a head-on collision between two trains in central Greece three days ago has increased to 38, while 57 people are still hospitalized, the Greek Fire Service has said.

Six people have been admitted to intensive care, it added on Wednesday.

With a search and rescue operation still underway near the city of Larissa, the death toll is expected to climb higher, Greek Fire Service spokesman Vasilios Vathrakogiannis told a press briefing.

Most of the victims in Greece’s worst-ever train accident were young people whose families are now demanding explanations, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a televised address to the nation on Wednesday evening.

“We will work so that this ‘never again’ that I heard in Larissa will not remain an empty promise,” he told Greek national broadcaster ERT.

The Greek Prime Minister added that the country’s State Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis would serve as a transitional Infrastructure and Transport Minister, after the resignation of Kostas Karamanlis, until the general election which would take place in the spring, Xinhua news agency reported.

An independent, cross-party committee of experts will also be established, to fully examine the causes of the accident, and to investigate chronic delays in the implementation of railway projects. Two national railway officials have resigned, Mitsotakis added.

An investigation into the cause of the disaster had been launched, with information so far indicating that it was caused by human error, he said.

The two trains, a passenger train traveling from Athens to Thessaloniki city port in northern Greece and a cargo train, were on the same track, but traveling in opposite directions for several kilometers before the collision.

President of the train drivers’ association, Kostas Genidounias told ERT that there were chronic shortcomings in railway operations that should be addressed.

A three-day national mourning has been declared in the country.

FIR lodged against Shah Rukh Khan’s wife Gauri in Lucknow over property purchase

An FIR has been lodged against Gauri Khan, designer, and wife of Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan.

The case against Gauri has been registered under section 409 (criminal breach of trust) of the Indian Penal Code.

The complaint was filed by Jaswant Shah, a resident of Mumbai, who alleged that the company — of which Gauri was the brand ambassador — failed to give possession of a flat despite charging Rs 86 lakh.

The complainant alleged that the flat located in Tulsiyani Golf View at Lucknow’s Sushant Golf City area was given to someone else.

Apart from Gauri, the complaint was also filed against Tulsiyani Construction and Development Limited Chief Managing Director, Anil Kumar Tulsiyani, and its Director Mahesh Tulsiyani.

The complainant said he bought the flat after being influenced by brand ambassador Gauri Khan.

‘Art of listening is powerful’: Rahul Gandhi at Cambridge University

Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi while speaking to MBA students at the Cambridge Judge Business School on the subject of “Learning to Listen in the 21st Century”, said that people around the world need to find a way of listening compassionately to new concerns in the 21st century that have been transformed by the shift of production away from democratic countries and toward China.

“The art of listening” when done consistently and diligently is “very powerful,” he added.

He said the decline in recent decades of manufacturing in democratic countries, including India and the US, as production has shifted to China, has produced mass inequality and associated anger that need urgent attention and dialogue.

“We simply cannot afford a planet that doesn’t produce under-democratic systems,” he told the MBA students.

“So we need new thinking about how you produce in a democratic environment compared to a coercive environment”, and a “negotiation about this”.

Rahul was introduced to the MBA audience by Kamal Munir, Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the University of Cambridge and Professor of Strategy and Policy at the Cambridge Judge Business School, who said the speaker comes from a “long lineage of global leaders”.

Gandhi’s lecture was divided into three parts, starting with an outline of the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’, a 4,081-km walk he led through 14 Indian states from September 2022 to January 2023 to draw attention to “prejudice, unemployment and growing inequality in India”.

The second part of the lecture focussed on the “two divergent perspectives” of the US and China since World War II and especially since the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union.

The former Congress President said that in addition to shedding manufacturing jobs, the US had become less open after September 11, 2001, while China “idolises harmony” through organization around the Chinese Communist Party.

The final aspect of his lecture was around the theme of “Imperative for a Global Conversation”, in which he knitted the themes together in a call for a new type of receptiveness to various viewpoints — explaining that a ‘yatra’ is a journey or pilgrimage in which people “shut themselves down so they can listen to others”.

Victim to return compensation in cases of compromise under SC/ST Act: HC

0

In a landmark judgment, the Allahabad High Court (HC) has held that in case there was a settlement between the contesting parties after registering of a case under the SC/ST Act, the informant victim of SC/ST community, who lodged the complaint, will have to deposit the amount received back in the state ex-chequer without which no compromise would be verified by the court concerned.

“Depositing of money received from Samaj Kalyan department shall be sine-qua-non and condition precedent for any settlement or truce between the parties,” the court added.

Hearing a criminal appeal filed by one Jhabbu Dubey and three others, Justice Rahul Chaturvedi observed, “When there is settlement between the parties, there is no threat for any offensive against the victim. There cannot be any good justification to keep that money for the victim and in all fairness, they are supposed to return the money to the state government. This is the hard-earned money of innocent taxpayers and any atrocities against the victims cannot be exploited to earn and enjoy the money from the state government even when there is compromise between them.”

As per rules, the victim belonging to the SC/ST community is provided economic aid on behalf of the Social Welfare department of the state government when he/she registers a case under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

The court further directed that where there was compromise or settlement between the victim and the accused, the same will be verified by the concerned sessions judge, SC/ST Act, taking into account the factors enumerated by the apex court.

After being satisfied, the sessions judge concerned will ask the informant/victim to deposit the entire amount received by him/her from the Samaj Kalyan department of the state government back within the next 10 days and then pass a suitable order verifying the covenants and the signatories of the compromise.

In addition to it, the court directed the authorities concerned to circulate a copy of this judgment to all the sessions divisions of the state so as to comply with the orders in the same terms and conditions in future.

UNSC to hold high-level debate on countering terrorism

0

Mozambique will convene a high-level debate at the UN Security Council chaired by President Filipe Nyusi on countering terrorism,” a matter of great concern for the world”, according to Permanent Representative Pedro Comissario Afonso, who took over the Council’s presidency.

“Terrorism is a matter of great concern in the world today, so we need to pool our efforts to combat possibly defeat and eradicate terrorism,” Afonso said briefing reporters on Wednesday on the Council’s agenda for the month.

“This will be an opportunity to leverage actions by the Security Council to explore further opportunities for engagements under Chapter VIII of the United Nations (Charter) in support of the counterterrorism initiatives,” he added.

The chapter provides for regional arrangements in cooperation with the UN to deal with security threats. The meeting is scheduled for March 28.

India, which headed the Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC) during its tenure on the Council in the past two years, brought a renewed focus to the scourge of terrorism.

During its presidency in December, India convened a ministerial-level meeting of the Council chaired by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on fighting terrorism.

India brought members of the CTC to the site of the 2008 terror strikes in Mumbai that killed more than 170 people to dramatize the threat.

The terror threat “is always there, and many people and many countries have the experience of how terrorists can strike at any time there,” Afonso said.

“Terrorism is terrorism,” he added, dismissing excuses some countries make.

While acknowledging the inability of the Council to deal with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, he said that it “does not affect the credibility of the United Nations in general”.

He cited the decolonization efforts of the UN that brought freedom to countries like his as examples of its efficacy.

But he also emphasized reform of the Council, saying that “Africa is a victim of a historical injustice” when the UN was set up after World War II denying the continent permanent seats.

Most of the peacekeeping operations that are mandated by the Council take place in Africa.

Afonso said that Africa should get at least two permanent seats and five non-permanent seats “and we have been fighting for that”.

The African nations were actively negotiating for and discussing the reform of the Council, he added.

Despite the resounding calls by world leaders at the September high-level General Assembly session, “the reform of the Security Council is a complex process” and cannot be instantaneously resolved, he said.

“You can’t just say, ‘Oh, yes, I accept one (permanent) seat for Africa’ and the problem will be solved,” Afonso added.

Other continents also have claims and “we needed to take account of all these different, differentiated positions”.

“It is not a very easy problem,” he said.

3rd Test, Day 1: Kuhnemann, Lyon pick three wickets each as India end up with 84/7 at lunch

0

Left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann and off-spinner Nathan Lyon picked three wickets each as India reached 84/7 in 26 overs at lunch of the opening day of the third Test at Holkar Stadium on Wednesday.

After India won the toss and elected to bat first on a dry pitch, the frenetic play followed, where every ball was literally an event as the ball turned big apart from variable bounce coming into play.

The opening overproduced exciting action, as a returning Mitchell Starc produced a faint edge off Rohit Sharma, but Australia didn’t take the review. Replays later showed it could have been a wicket for Australia if the review was taken.

Rohit and Shubman Gill hit six delightful boundaries in the first five overs. But from there, Australia’s spinners spun a vicious web to trap the Indian batters. Rohit was the first to fall, dancing down the pitch to go over mid-on but couldn’t get to the pitch of the ball as it turned sharply and was stumped off Kuhnemann.

The left-arm spinner returned in his next over as Gill perished to a defensive prod and was caught at first slip. Lyon then got one to turn in sharply and breakthrough Cheteshwar Pujara’s defense to hit the stumps. Ravindra Jadeja’s promotion backfired as he couldn’t keep the cut-down and was caught at cover off Lyon.

In the next over, Shreyas Iyer chopped onto his stumps off Kuhnemann for a two-ball duck. While other batters crumbled, Virat Kohli looked assured in his defense and also found some timely boundaries.

But his stay ended at 22 when off-spinner Todd Murphy trapped him in front of the stumps. KS Bharat cracked a powerful sweep and slog-sweep but was also trapped lbw off Lyon at the stroke of lunch. With Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel unbeaten on 1 and 6 respectively, India will be aiming to cross at least the 100-run mark.

Brief Scores: India 84/7 in 26 overs (Virat Kohli 22, Shubman Gill 21; Matthew Kuhnemann 3/14, Nathan Lyon 3/23) against Australia

Shraddha Kapoor: Grateful to Mohit Suri for letting me record ‘Teri Galliyan’

Bollywood actress Shraddha Kapoor recounted recording the track ‘Teri Galliyan’ from the 2014 film ‘Ek Villain’ and expressed gratitude to Mohit Suri for letting her sing the song.

Sharing her experience, she said: “Before recording the song, when we were shooting ‘Aashiqui 2’, I requested Mohit Suri to allow me to sing one song in the film. But he was looking for a great voice to sing for the film.”

“So, one day during the filming of ‘Ek Villian,’ Mohit Suri called me and asked where I was going to be the next day, to which I replied, ‘I will be at home only’. He immediately said, ‘come to the studio let’s record the song ‘Teri Galliyan’.”

Shraddha has been part of numerous movies including ‘Aashiqui 2’, ‘Ek Villain’, ‘Haider’, ‘ABCD 2’, ‘Baaghi’, ‘Rock On 2’, ‘OK Jaanu’, ‘Half Girlfriend’, and many more shared further that initially, she was nervous as she was not so prepared but Mohit trusted her and she said that this his trust became her motivation.

“I was terrified because I was not prepared. There was a scene in ‘Aashiqui 2’ where Arohi says, ‘Muhjse Nahi Hoga’ before singing, and this was replicated in my real life as well because I was in the studio when Mohit sir arrived, and I was unable to record it. But this is so special to me; had this moment not occurred in my life, I would never have sung this song.”

“I believe that whoever believes in you and your abilities, and the strength we gain from them, is the most beautiful thing in life, and I am grateful to Mohit Suri for this opportunity,” she added.

Shraddha along with Ranbir Kapoor graced the singing reality show ‘Indian Idol 13’ to promote their film ‘Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar’. Moreover, ace singer Javed Ali also joined the panel of judges including Vishal Dadlani, Neha Kakkar, and Himesh Reshammiya as guest judges.

After two jailed ministers of the Aam Aadmi party (AAP) — Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain — stepped down, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has forwarded the names of two party leaders for their appointment to the Cabinet to Lt. Governor V.K. Saxena.

A source said that CM Kejriwal has recommended the names of party MLA Atishi and Saurabh Bharadwaj for induction into the cabinet to L-G Saxena. Atishi and Bharadwaj are supposed to take the seat of Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain in the Delhi Cabinet.

Meanwhile, upon request from Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to accept the resignations of ministers who quit on Tuesday, Delhi Lt. Governor Saxena on Wednesday recommended the resignations to President Droupadi Murmu.

Of the 18 departments headed by Sisodia, the responsibilities of eight departments, including Finance and PWD, have been given to Kailash Gahlot, while the remaining ten, including Education and Health, have been assigned to Raaj Kumar Anand for the time being till new ministers are inducted into the cabinet.

US Congress panel says tackling China defines next century

0

The US Congress must act urgently to counter the economic and national security threats posed by the Chinese government, a bipartisan chorus of lawmakers on a newly created special House committee has warned.

The two superpowers were locked in an “existential struggle over what life will look like in the 21st century”, the committee’s Republican chairman, Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin, said as the rivalry between the US and China deepens.

With democracy advocates and protesters in attendance, the panel — formally the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party — began its work at a precarious moment for Washington-Beijing relations, reports the Guardian.

It comes weeks after a suspected Chinese spy balloon traversed the continental US and amid intelligence that Beijing is considering providing lethal weapons to aid Russia in its ongoing war against Ukraine.

Meanwhile, China’s militarisation and aggression toward Taiwan, a self-ruled island that Beijing claims as its own, as well as its response to the coronavirus pandemic, have further escalated tensions.

Underscoring the broad range of challenges the panel hopes to address, lawmakers peppered the witnesses with questions on human rights abuses, trade policies, the influence of TikTok, aggression in Taiwan, the origins of Covid-19, and international espionage, The Guardian reported.

Gallagher hopes the committee will help shape China policy and legislation that can win support from both parties.

But with the 2024 presidential campaign looming, and Republicans eager to paint Joe Biden as “weak on China”, the possibility of bipartisan action is likely to become increasingly narrow, reports the Guardian.

“Time is not on our side,” he said, imploring a bitterly divided Congress to come together to confront China. “Our policy over the next 10 years will set the stage for the next hundred.”.

Illinois Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, the ranking Indian-American Democrat on the panel, echoed Gallagher’s sense of urgency.

He said Democrats and Republicans had for years “underestimated” the Chinese government, believing that economic integration would “inevitably lead to democracy”.

But it did not and now the US needed to move quickly to pursue economic and trade policies that would “up our game” as Americans to compete with China, the Guardian reported.

“We do not want a war within the PRC,” he said, referring to the People’s Republic of China, “not a cold war, not a hot war. We don’t want a clash of civilizations”.

Putin signs law to suspend Russia’s participation in arms treaty with US

0

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law officially suspending his country’s participation in the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) with the US.

The law came into force immediately after the signing on Tuesday and the decision to resume Russia’s participation in the treaty is up to the head of state, reports Xinhua news agency.

In his annual State of the Nation to the Federal Assembly on February 21, Putin said Russia was suspending its participation in, rather than withdrawing from, the New START treaty.

He also pointed out the combined strike potential of NATO as Britain and France also have nuclear arsenals that pose a threat to Russia.

A day later, a bill on the New START treaty suspension was unanimously adopted by Russia’s parliament and then sent to Putin for his final approval.

The New START, the last remaining nuclear arms control treaty in force between the two nuclear superpowers, was signed in 2010 and took effect on February 5, 2011.

The Treaty stipulates that seven years after its entry into force, each party should have no more than a total of 700 deployed intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs), and strategic bombers, as well as no more than 1,550 warheads on deployed ICBMs, deployed SLBMs and strategic bombers, and a total of 800 deployed and non-deployed ICBM launchers, SLBM launchers and strategic bombers.

On February 3, 2021, the two nations exchanged notes on the completion of internal procedures necessary for the agreement on extending the term of the treaty for five years to take effect.

On August 8, 2022, Russia informed the US it was temporarily pausing New START inspections of its facilities in the wake of the sanctions imposed on Moscow in the wake of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Amazon joins Vishal Garg’s Better.com to let employees use stock to buy homes

0

Amazon has signed a deal with embattled online mortgage lender Better.com run by controversial Indian-origin CEO Vishal Garg to allow employees to use their shares in the company toward a mortgage down payment.

Better.com launched ‘Equity Unlocker’ which allows Amazon employees to use their vested equity as collateral for a down payment for buying homes.

According to Garg’s company, Amazon employees can finance their homes without actually selling their shares.

Amazon workers in Florida, New York, and Washington can currently use Equity Unlocker’ to secure a home loan without selling their Amazon stock.

“Even though equity is a valuable asset, it is considered ineligible by most banks and financial institutions when calculating the necessary down payment on a home,” said Garg.

To protect itself from a continued slide in Amazon’s stock price, Better.com will charge a higher rate on the mortgages of employees pledging stock “between 0.25 and 2.5 percentage points above the market rate, depending on how the down payment is structured,” according to reports.

An Amazon spokesperson told TechCrunch that the company is “always looking for opportunities” to enhance its benefits offerings “and better support employees’ mental, physical, and financial wellness.”

In December 2021, Garg laid off nearly 900 employees over a Zoom call that created a furor.

In total, he laid off more than 4,000 employees in the US and India.

According to the company, the uncertain mortgage market conditions created an exceedingly challenging operating environment for many companies in the industry.

Dubai Tennis Championships: Djokovic survives thriller against Machac in opener

The Serbian held off a ferocious challenge from Czech player for a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(1) win on Tuesday. He will next face the World No. 39 Dutch Tallon Griekspoor.

Machac showcased some top-class shotmaking, particularly off the backhand wing, to roar back into contention after a fast start from Djokovic at the ATP 500. The World No. 1 was at times visibly frustrated at struggling to find his best level but composed himself in trademark fashion in the deciding-set tie-break to ward off the upset and take a hard-earned two-hour and 28-minute victory.

Having finished his 2022 season by going unbeaten at the ATP Finals, Djokovic’s current winning streak now stands at 18.

“I’m extremely grateful that I’m able to play at this level after many years. India’s mobile download speeds up by 115% since 5G launch

0

As 5G roll-out picks up speed, the median download speeds across India increased by a massive 115 percent since the launch of 5G on October 1 last year, a report showed on Wednesday.

The median download speed increased from 13.87 Mbps in September to 29.85 Mbps in January 2023, according to Ookla, the global leader in network intelligence and connectivity insights.

As a result, India’s position on the Speedtest Global Index improved by 49 places from 118th in September 2022 to 69th in January.

The data shows improvement in LTE speeds for both Jio and Airtel since the launch of 5G services, as all their investments into network modernization are paying off.

“When 5G was first launched in October 2022, there was a wide disparity in the early 5G network performance users were experiencing on 5G-capable devices,” the report noted.

The median 5G download speeds then oscillated between 512.57 Mbps (Gujarat) and 19.23 Mbps (Uttar Pradesh West) as the 5G networks build out started.

In fact, in nine telecom circles: Andhra Pradesh, Kolkata, North East, Haryana, Rajasthan, Bihar, Punjab, Kerala, and Uttar Pradesh West, the median 5G download speed was below 100 Mbps because networks were very much at the testing stage.

“Four months on, in January 2023, 5G median download speeds had greatly increased across all of the telecoms circles” exceeding 200 Mbps everywhere except Jammu and Kashmir, with Kolkata clocking speeds over 500 Mbps,” the report noted.

Moreover, 5G investments made by the operators have also propelled an increase in 4G LTE speeds thanks to the modernization of the underlying infrastructure.

For instance, the median 5G download speed is 25 times that of 4G LTE (338.12 Mbps vs. 13.30 Mbps), and the median 5G upload speed is 4.5 times 4G LTE (19.65 Mbps vs 3.55 Mbps).

“This must be caveated by the fact that these are still early days for 5G in India, and 5G performance will most likely decrease once those networks are commercially available,” said the report.

“Hari’s unique contributions have shaped the course of research and discovery in multiple fields, saved lives, and enabled users to have better experiences with network-based services,” Vint Cerf, chair of the Marconi Society and 1998 Marconi Fellow, said in an MIT News statement.

“His focus on scientific excellence that creates positive impact at scale, along with his humanitarian contributions, makes him a perfect choice for the Marconi Prize,” Cerf said.

The Marconi Prize, widely considered to be the top honor within the field of communications technology, is given annually to “innovators who have made significant contributions to increasing digital inclusivity through the advancement of information and communications technology”.

Balakrishnan’s research has focused on improving the reliability, performance, and efficiency of computer systems, with special emphasis on networking, mobile computing, and distributed systems.

At present, his research focuses on networking, sensing, and perception for sensor-equipped mobile devices connected to edge and cloud services, and on designing architectures for more resilient networked systems.

His research in networking has led to better communication protocols for mobile devices communicating over the internet, such as the techniques he developed to understand and improve the performance of data transport over wireless networks.

Between 1999 and 2004, Balakrishnan led the development of Cricket, an indoor location system using a novel approach to distance estimation using ultrasonic and radio signals.

Balakrishnan received his Ph.D. in 1998 from the University of California at Berkeley’s Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department, which named him a distinguished alumnus in 2021.

He also earned a B.Tech in 1993 from the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras, which named him a distinguished alumnus in 2013.

He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2015 and to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2017.
