Diego Simeone breaks long-standing LaLiga record for coaching most matches with single club

0

Diego Simeone has broken yet another record, over a decade on from taking charge in the Atletico de Madrid dugout.

According to information received here, following the 1-1 Madrid Derby draw at the Santiago Bernabeu, El Cholo has now coached Atleti in 425 LaLiga Santander matches- an all-time record in the competition’s history for matches coached for a single club – taking him past the previous record-holder Miguel Munoz’s tally of 424.

Since returning to the club, he so famously represented during his playing days as coach in December 2011, he has led Los Rojiblancos to two LaLiga Santander titles (2014, 2021), as well as a Copa del Rey (2013), two UEFA Europa Leagues (2012, 2018) and two UEFA Super Cups (2012, 2018).

Simeone takes over the record from Miguel Munoz, the man who coached Real Madrid between 1960 and 1974 to nine LaLiga Santander titles and two European Cups (1960, 1966) and who held the record for 49 years and sits top of a top 3 also featuring former Atleti legend Luis Aragones.

WhatsApp may soon add newsletters to Status tab on Android beta

0

Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp is reportedly redesigning its Status tab to include newsletters, for Android beta.

The company is working on changing the Status tab by adding two different sections– status and newsletter reports WABetaInfo.

The important aspects of this newly designed section will be the incorporation of users’ subscribed newsletters directly into the status tab, as well as the capability to search for newsletters by username.

Moreover, status updates will be displayed in a horizontal layout similar to Instagram Stories.

Users who create and subscribe to a newsletter will have their phone numbers hidden to prevent the disclosure of their identity.

Also, users will likely be able to control who they follow and no one else will be able to see that, the report said.

Last month, it was reported that the messaging platform was working on a new private newsletter feature, which will be a one-to-many tool for broadcasting information.

I-League: Sudeva Delhi hope to bounce back against NEROCA

0

Still smarting under the disastrous 0-8 defeat against RoundGlass Punjab in Panchkula, Delhi-based Sudeva FC are now back on their home turf, hoping to make the most of the next tie versus NEROCA FC in the I-League 2022-23 at the Chhatrasal Stadium on Wednesday.

The kick-off is at 2:00 pm IST.

Apart from the humiliating loss against the Punjab outfit, Sudeva FC had a rather successful campaign in the month of February, winning three games against Rajasthan United (3-2), Mumbai Kenkre (3-1) and TRAU (4-1). They also held league leaders RoundGlass Punjab to a draw (1-1) in their own backyard. But the massive loss at Panchkula has left them licking their wounds, and they will have to do everything to recover from the shock and lift the sagging morale of the footballers.

In the pre-match press conference, Sudeva Delhi head coach Sankar Lal Chakraborty said he was confident that his team would shrug off the disappointment and make a comeback. “We won’t face the same result again. I have asked the players to forget about the match as soon as possible and have motivated them for the next match, the Sudeva coach said.

Chakraborty also emphasized the importance of focusing on young players for the remainder of the season. “We aim to win the remaining matches and improve our youth players’ performances, and end the campaign on a high note. This is our target,” he commented.

On the upcoming match against NEROCA, Chakraborty said he expected a tough fight. “It will be a tough fight, as expected. I, like everyone else, want our team to win and move up the rankings, surpassing Kenkre tomorrow,” Chakraborty said.

NEROCA FC, on the other hand, has gone through many ups and downs this season. After struggling in the first half of the season, when they mostly stayed in the relegation zone, NEROCA went on to win four consecutive games at home and climb up the table. However, recent results have taken them back down to 10th place.

NEROCA FC’s assistant coach, Gyan Moyon, believes that injuries and suspensions midway through the season cost them many points, but he is positive about their upcoming match. “We started the second half of the season well. However, the injuries and suspensions caused us trouble. But we are back at full strength now. Our expectation is to win the game and get the three points,” Moyon said.

India register a solid win over Qatar in U-17 Friendly

0

The India U-17 Men’s National Team put on a rousing performance to defeat hosts Qatar U-17 in the second of two friendly matches at the Aspire Academy in Doha.

India has qualified for the AFC U-17 Asian Cup final rounds to be held later this year and these matches were held as part of the preparations for the tournament.

Qatar, who had won the first friendly 3-1 on Saturday, was put on the back foot from the get-go by India. Bibiano Fernandes’ side opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Qatar goalkeeper Zeiad Shoaib handled a backpass inside his own penalty area, giving India an indirect free-kick which was converted by defender Ricky Meetei Haobam.

India did not sit back after taking the lead and kept the pressure on. Danny Laishram went close to doubling the advantage when his free-kick from just outside the 18-yard box whistled wide of the post.

However, the Blue Colts did profit from their next set piece opportunity. Gurnaj Singh Grewal crossed to captain Korou Singh Thingujam, who saw his shot blocked by custodian Shoaib. But the rebound fell kindly for Shashwat Panwar, who tapped in to make it two for India. It was Panwar’s second goal in as many matches.

The second half did not see much goalmouth action, but India did have sparse chances to build an even bigger lead. Danny’s shot was collected by the goalkeeper before Panwar’s effort went narrowly wide. Indian goalkeeper Sahil made his only save in the 71st minute, an acrobatic one to maintain his clean sheet.

Coach Fernandes rolled in a few substitutions in the final 15 minutes to see off the contest. Malemngamba Singh Thokchom, Vanlalpeka Guite, Gogocha Chungkham and Lalpekhlua all came in.

Finally, Korou wrapped up the victory with India’s third goal in injury time. Guite picked Korou out with a brilliant through ball and the winger made no mistake one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

Boy attacked by stray dogs in Lucknow, 5th incident in 2 months

0

A 13-year-old boy sustained injuries after he was attacked by a pack of stray dogs.

The incident took place in Jankipuram Srishti Apartments, an LDA high-rise building, and this is the fifth such case in the same building within a span of just two months.

The boy’s mother Preeti Upadhyay, said: “The pack of three-four dogs suddenly attacked Raj Aryan when he was playing on the building lawn. He sustained injuries in his legs.”

In previous such cases on the building premises, a maintenance worker, two women, and a teenager have suffered injuries in separate dog attack incidents.

“Due to multiple dog bites, the residents of the building have now started going out with sticks or in groups. These attacks are often ignored by concerned authorities until a big incident takes place. Are the civic bodies waiting for a Hyderabad-like incident where a boy was killed by a pack of dogs,” asked Vivek Sharma, a member of the resident welfare association.

Chief Veterinary Officer Abhinav Verma said that most of the areas near Srishti Apartment are high rises.

“Dogs are not being fed enough. It may be one of the reasons making them aggressive. A majority of dogs are yet to be sterilized but we have dispatched a vehicle to capture them,” he said.

The dog attack comes in the wake of the urban development department drafting a new set of ‘Dos and Don’ts’ in the context of pet registration.

Dog owners are now required to submit an undertaking stating that their pet will not cause a public nuisance.

Additional municipal commissioner (animal welfare) Arvind Rao said: “The idea is to make dog owners accountable for the actions of their pets. Stray dog lovers will also have to be equally cautious. They will also be held accountable for feeding ferocious dogs.”

Covid most likely originated from Chinese lab: FBI chief

0

Christopher Wray, Director of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), has said that the Covid-19 pandemic “most likely” originated from a “Chinese government-controlled lab” in Wuhan city.

In an interview with Fox News on Tuesday, Wray said: “The FBI has for quite some time now assessed that the origins of the pandemic are most likely a potential lab incident in Wuhan… Here you are talking about a potential leak from a Chinese government-controlled lab.

“I will just make the observation that the Chinese government, it seems to me, has been doing its best to try to thwart and obfuscate the work here, the work that we’re doing, the work that our US government and close foreign partners are doing. And that’s unfortunate for everybody.”

He went on to say that the FBI has specialists who focus on “the dangers of biological threats, which include things like novel viruses like Covid, and the concerns that they (are) in the wrong hands (of) some bad guys, a hostile nation-state, a terrorist, a criminal”.

Some studies in the past have suggested that the virus made the leap from animals to humans in Wuhan, possibly at the city’s seafood and wildlife market, reports the BBC.

The market is a 40-minute drive from a world-leading virus laboratory, the Wuhan Institute of Virology, which conducted research into coronaviruses.

But China has denied the lab leak theory.

The FBI chief further told Fox News that the Chinese government has been trying to block investigative work into the origins of the coronavirus.

Wray’s comments come after the US Department of Energy had recently assessed that the Covid-19 pandemic was likely caused by an accidental lab leak in China.

The National Intelligence Council as well as four other government agencies assess at “low confidence” that Covid-19 originated as a result of natural transmission from an infected animal, but the CIA and other government agencies remain undecided.

On Monday, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said that President Joe Biden supports “a whole-of-government effort” to discover how Covid began.

But he added that the US still lacks a clear consensus as to what happened.

“We’re just not there yet. If we have something that is ready to be briefed to the American people and the Congress, we will do that,” the BBC quoted Kirby as saying.

Covid-19 first emerged in late 2019 and has since led to the deaths of nearly seven million people across the world.

Telehealth startup Cerebral to reduce 15% of workforce

US-Based telehealth startup Cerebral introduced, Fifteen percent of its workforce will be going cuts in terms of jobs.

The layoffs are part of Cerebral’s yearlong plan to reorganize the company and focus on the services patients want, reports The Wall Street Journal, citing sources.

However, it has not been confirmed how many jobs will be affected and in which areas.

Cerebral, which launched in 2020, has attracted hundreds of thousands of patients through social media ads and quick prescriptions for ADHD (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder) and other mental health conditions, said the report.

According to PitchBook, which tracks private companies, the telehealth startup had a valuation of $4.8 billion in 2021, less than two years after it launched.

In October last year, the company laid off 20 percent of its employees, as part of an effort to meet patient demand and lower growth targets, mentioned the report.

Cerebral had 2,500 employees as of March 2022, before the layoffs, the report added.

Meanwhile, Swedish telecom gear maker Ericsson is laying off about 8 percent of its workforce, around 8,500 employees, to cut costs in the ongoing global macroeconomic conditions.

According to an internal memo sent to employees, the company said the headcount reduction has been conveyed to employees in several countries.

Delhi HC issues notice to police on ex-Congress MLA’s bail plea

0

The notice has been issued by The Delhi High Court on Tuesday to the police about the bail plea of former Congress MLA Asif Mohd Khan, who was jailed for misgiving with police officers in the national capital’s Shaheen Bagh area.

Last month, the Saket Court’s Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Sonu Agnihotri dismissed Khan’s bail plea observing that if law enforcers are attacked and abused and the accused are granted bail, it won’t serve the right message to the society.

“To my mind, in these circumstances, the bail application of accused Asif Mohammad Khan does not deserve to be allowed and is accordingly dismissed,” the ASJ had said.

Khan’s counsel had argued that a false case was filed against him to keep him in custody because he raised social issues against the police.

However, the Additional Public Prosecutor had objected to Khan’s bail application and submitted that he has been found attacking government officials on duty more than once and that there were three recent cases including the present one.

He had added that the accused was recently released on bail, but he misused his freedom to commit another crime, hence he should not be granted bail.

During the arguments, Khan’s video was played before the court.

On perusal of the video, the court had said that his behavior appeared to show that he has “no regard for the law” and “considered himself above the law”.

That game is what Test cricket is about, says Ben Stokes after a narrow loss to NZ in second Test

0

After the disappointing loss against New Zealand on Tuesday, England skipper Ben Stokes said “that game is what Test cricket is about” and it was incredible to be involved in such a thrilling contest.

New Zealand became just the fourth team ever to win a Test match after being forced to follow on when they pulled off a thrilling one-run victory over England in a classic final-day contest.

“That game is what Test cricket is about, it was just incredible. The emotions we were going through and obviously the Kiwi boys out there as well. Was incredible to be involved in such a Test match. Everyone’s got their money’s worth,” Stokes said after the match.

England had to chase down 258 for victory in the fourth innings and they looked to be in control when Joe Root (95) and Ben Stokes (33) were at the crease and less than 60 runs were required.

“It was a case of assessing the situations, we always knew that at some point in that partnership (between himself and Root), Tim was gonna have to roll the dice with something. Wags (Wagner) came on and blew the game open for them. For myself and Joe there, that was our opportunity to pounce. Sometimes things don’t happen the way you want them to,” he said.

Neil Wagner 4/62) and Tim Southee (3/45) dug deep during a tense finale to ensure New Zealand picked up a thrilling win to level the two-match series at one game apiece.

Speaking about attacking the bouncers from the Kiwi bowlers, Stokes said: “Sometimes things don’t happen the way you want them to. With those bouncer plans, we had to make a decision and obviously, it didn’t come off for us. It was an opportunity for us to score runs there. As soon as Waggie came on to do those bouncers, I saw it as an opportunity to maybe take 20 runs off the over and then bring the game even more in our favor.”

New Zealand’s winning margin of one run is just the second time in the history of Test cricket that a match has been decided by that narrow margin, with the only other occurrence coming in 1993 when the West Indies pulled off a similar triumph over Australia in Adelaide.

Meta launches new platform to remove minors’ intimate images online

0

To protect the images of youngsters and minors from misuse online, Meta introduced a fresh platform.

The social media network said, this is helping the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in the development of ‘Take It Down, the stage which gives assistance to stop the distribution of adult pics online.

“We have also announced the features that do strict protection for the teenagers from mistrustful adults on social media like Instagram, Facebook, etc..” said Antigone Davis, Global Head of Safety at Meta.

‘Take It Down’ lets young people take back control of their intimate images.

People can go to TakeItDown.NCMEC.org and follow the instructions to submit a case that will proactively search for their intimate images on participating apps.

The platform then assigns a unique hash value and” numerical code a” to their image or video privately and directly from their own device.

“Once they submit the hash to NCMEC, companies like ours can use those hashes to find any copies of the image, take them down, and prevent the content from being posted on our apps in the future,” said Meta.

With the launch of Take It Down, people of all ages can stop the spread of their intimate images online, including young people under 18 years old; parents or trusted adults on behalf of a young person, and adults who are worried about images taken of them when they were under 18.

On Instagram, the company recently introduced new features to make it even more difficult for suspicious adults to interact with teens.

“Now, these adults will no longer be able to see teen accounts when scrolling through the list of people who have liked a post or when looking at an account’s Followers or Following list,” said the company.

If a suspicious adult follows a teen account, “we will send that teen a notification prompting them to review and remove the new follower”.

The company is also prompting teens to review and restrict their privacy settings.

“We’ve developed more than 30 tools to support the safety of teens and families across our apps, including supervision tools for parents and age-verification technology that helps teens have age-appropriate experiences online,” said Meta.

2nd Test: New Zealand beat England by just one run after follow-on in Wellington

0

New Zealand on Tuesday became just the fourth team ever to win a Test match after being forced to follow on when they pulled off a thrilling one-run victory over England in a classic final-day contest, here.

Pacer Neil Wagner (4/62) was the hero for the Kiwis as he had James Anderson caught behind down the leg side to clinch a famous victory for New Zealand in the second Test at Basin Reserve.

The hosts’ hopes had looked forlorn when they were asked to follow on after being dismissed for just 209 in their first innings in reply to England’s 435/8 declared, but Kane Williamson’s 26th Test century on the penultimate day of a topsy-turvy contest gave New Zealand some hope, reports ICC.

England had to chase down 258 for victory in the fourth innings and they looked to be in control when Joe Root (95) and Ben Stokes (33) were at the crease and less than 60 runs were required.

But Wagner and Tim Southee (3/45) dug deep during a tense finale to ensure New Zealand picked up a thrilling triumph to level the two-match series at one game apiece.

New Zealand joined three other teams to have won a Test match after being forced to follow on, with the most recent prior to this clash coming back in 2001 when India clinched an unlikely win against Australia in Kolkata.

The Kiwis’ winning margin of one run is just the second time in the history of Test cricket that a match has been decided by that narrow margin, with the only other occurrence coming in 1993 when the West Indies pulled off a similar triumph over Australia in Adelaide.

The match was not part of the current World Test Championship period, with both New Zealand and England already out of contention of reaching June’s final.

India U-17s determined to dish out better fare against Qatar

0

The India U-17 Men’s National Team will take on their Qatar counterparts in the second friendly match at the Aspire Academy in Doha on Tuesday.

The Blue Colts will be looking to make a comeback in their second game after they suffered a 1-3 defeat at the hands of the same rivals on Saturday. Head coach Bibiano Fernandes sounded upbeat on the eve of the game.

“The mood in the camp is great. Yes, we faced defeat in the first game, but the boys are determined to get back in the second match and get a positive result against Qatar. This is the kind of determination one always looks for in the players, and I hope that we can erase our mistakes from the last game and move on,” said Fernandes.

The India U-17s, who are currently preparing for their AFC U-17 Asian Cup campaign later this year, saw a level contest in the first half, before conceding two in the second, in their previous game against Qatar.

“If you look at the first half, things were pretty even and we had created plenty of chances throughout the game. that’s always an encouraging sign,” said Fernandes. “We need to concentrate on finishing these chances, and the boys have been working really hard to do so.”
