Women’s T20 World Cup: Richa Ghosh lone Indian among 9 in Player of Tournament shortlist

0

All-rounder Richa Ghosh is the lone Indian among the nine players shortlisted by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to decide the Player of the Tournament for the Women’s T20 World Cup.

The right-handed batter Ghosh had scored 136 runs at an average of 68 as India reached the semifinals before losing to defending champions Australia.

The India teenager shone in her role as a finisher in South Africa, smashing two scores in the 40s including an unbeaten 47 against England that took her side to within sight of victory.

Ghosh was only dismissed twice from five innings at the tournament and scored at a strike rate greater than 130 that further displayed her attacking prowess.

The others on the shortlist include three from Australia, who dominate the shortlist, two players each from England and South Africa, and one from West Indies.

Cricket fans from around the world now get a chance to vote and decide the winner.

The three Australians on the list are Meg Lanning (139 runs @ 69.50), Alyssa Healy (171 runs @ 57), and Ash Gardner (81 runs @ 40.50, nine wickets @ 11.66).

Nat Sciver-Brunt (216 runs @ 72, three catches) and Sophie Ecclestone (11 wickets @ 7.54) are the two players from England to make the shortlist while top batter Laura Wolvaardt (169 runs @ 42.25) and Tazmin Brits (176 runs @ 44, six catches) are the two Proteas players to be nominated for the award.

West Indies skipper Hayley Matthews (130 runs @ 43.33, four wickets @ 22.25, four catches) is the ninth player on the shortlist.

The Women’s T20 World Cup will conclude on Sunday with hosts South Africa taking on defending champions Australia in the final. The Player of the Tournament will be revealed after the final on Sunday.

India hopes to broaden G20 discussion on crypto assets beyond financial integrity concerns

0

With a view to informing policymakers on the broader macroeconomic and financial stability implications of crypto assets, the Indian Presidency requested the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to prepare a discussion paper on the topic for the 2ndAG20 Finance and Central Bank Deputies Meeting held in Bengaluru.

During the meeting, a seminar titled “Policy Perspectives: Debating the Road to Policy Consensus on Crypto Assets” was held, as part of the Presidency’s efforts to broaden the dialogue around crypto assets. The IMF speaker, Tommaso Mancini-Griffoli, presented the discussion paper during the event, highlighting the consequences of crypto adoption on the internal and external stability of a country’s economy as well as on the structure of its financial system.

Mancini-Griffoli underlined that the purported benefits of crypto assets include cheaper and faster cross-border payments, more integrated financial markets, and increased financial inclusion, but these are yet to be realized.

Problems with interoperability, safety, and efficiency cannot be guaranteed by the private sector and critical digital infrastructure/platforms for ledgers should be viewed as a public good, he said.

He also flagged the global information gaps pertaining to the crypto asset universe and the need to build a deeper understanding of the interlinkages, opportunities, and risks pertaining to crypto assets under the aegis of the G20.

The seminar was attended by Deputies from G20 member countries, international organizations as well as eminent experts on the subject. The discussions covered a wide range of topics, including the need for a common taxonomy and a systematic classification of the crypto asset universe, benefits and risks of crypto assets, macroeconomic policy questions that needed to be evaluated further, and, financial stability issues and regulatory responses.

To complement the ongoing dialogue on the need for a policy framework, the Indian Presidency has proposed a joint technical paper by the IMF and the FSB which would synthesize the macroeconomic and regulatory perspectives of crypto-assets. This would help in the formulation of a coordinated and comprehensive policy approach to crypto assets.

The international organizations are expected to present their joint paper during the 4th Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting in October 2023. The paper is expected to be supplemented by similar such discussion seminars on the sidelines of other G20 meetings held under the Indian Presidency. The discussions are further expected to build informed debate within the G20 meetings and lead to the formulation of a coordinated and comprehensive policy approach.

In their entirety, the IMF’s discussion paper, the policy seminar, and the joint IMF-FSB paper are expected to integrate the policy questions pertaining to macro-financial and regulatory perspectives of crypto assets and facilitate a global consensus on a well-coordinated and comprehensive policy approach to crypto assets.

Congress pledges laws to rein in hate crimes

The Congress, in its draft political resolution, on Saturday pledged to bring in laws to prevent hate crimes in the country, if voted to power.

This comes against the backdrop of rising incidents of hate crimes and lynching, the latest being the burning alive of two people in Rajasthan.

The resolution said, “In the last eight-and-a-half years under the BJP Government, the politics of hate has assumed alarming proportions and religious polarisation has reached its peak. Hate crimes and atrocities have increased manifold.

“Vigilante right-wing groups incite violence on various trivial issues. These groups operate with impunity and have started acting like police, spreading anarchy and fear. This fear in the minds of minorities is the aim of the BJP/RSS regime.”

During the course of the Bharat Jodo Yatra, it was clear that the majority of Indians yearn for love, peace, and harmony, it added.

The Congress said it believes in our civilizational principle of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ which means “The World Is One Family”. Minorities form about a
fifth of India’s population. Neglecting, marginalizing, and alienating them is
inhuman, and hits at the unity and integrity of India.

“The culture of hatred nurtured and propagated by BJP, RSS and their acolytes violates the tenets of all religions. We need to create a sense of security among each and every Indian, regardless of their region, religion, caste, class or gender,” it further said.

It also said that crimes against weaker sections of society have also increased. Atrocities against Scheduled Castes (SCs) have increased by 1.2 percent in 2021, according to the NCRB. Violence against Dalit and Adivasi women has also risen. Cases of rape against SC women, including shockingly, minors, account for 7.64 percent and ST women account for 15 percent of the total cases reported.

“Congress will pass a new law to prevent and punish hate crimes,” it concluded.

New Apple MacBook Air may launch in April with latest features

0

Apple is reportedly planning to release a new MacBook Air with a larger 15-inch display in April 2023.

According to display analyst Ross Young, the laptop is expected to be powered by the M2 chip and will likely support Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3, reports MacRumors.

While a new 13-inch MacBook Air with an OLED display is rumored to be released in 2024, the 15-inch model is expected to have a standard LCD display.

Moreover, similar to the 13-inch MacBook Air, the 15-inch model will reportedly be available with the M2 chip.

The company said that the M2 chip has up to an 18 percent faster CPU, up to a 35 percent faster GPU, and up to a 40 percent faster Neural Engine compared to the M1 chip.

Further, the new MacBook Air may offer longer battery life.

According to Apple, the 13-inch MacBook Air with the M2 chip lasts up to 18 hours per charge, so perhaps the 15-inch model could get closer to the 20-hour mark.

The report also mentioned that, while the 13-inch MacBook Air with the M2 chip is limited to Wi-Fi 6, the 15-inch MacBook Air will likely get Wi-Fi 6E.

The tech giant already updated the Mac mini with the M2 chip and Wi-Fi 6E last month.

The company also added Bluetooth 5.3 support to several of its most recent devices, and the 15-inch MacBook Air could be next.

Rio Open Alcaraz, Norrie reach semis, remain on course for a rematch of Buenos Aires final

0

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz continued his perfect record in 2023 with a fighting 6-4, 7-6(0) win over Serbian Dusan Lajovic and advanced to the semifinals of the Rio Open here on Friday.

The 19-year-old Spaniard, the former World No. 1 who has recently returned from an injury break, rallied from 2-4 down in both the first and second sets before putting away the World No. 80 for the second time in as many weeks, having beaten the 29-year-old 6-4, 6-2 in the Buenos Aires quarterfinals.

Second seed Cameron Norrie kept alive the possibility of a final showdown with Alcaraz for the second consecutive week after he rallied from a set down to defeat Bolivia’s Hugo Dellien 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

But Norrie will be looking for a good start on Saturday against Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles, who reached his second consecutive semifinal after taking out countryman Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.

Despite hitting 32 winners to Lajovic’s 13 and winning 16 of 17 net approaches, Alcaraz will not be entirely happy with his performance after forcing himself to work harder than perhaps needed for victory. In addition to going down breaks in both sets and making 25 unforced errors, the Spaniard was broken at 5-all in the second despite holding a 40/0 lead in the game.

The former World No. 1 was forced to save a set point with some inspired play at the net in the following game before running away with the win in the tie-break.

Closing in on back-to-back titles after triumphing in Buenos Aires last week in his season debut, the World No. 2 will meet Chilean qualifier Nicolas Jarry on Saturday.

Should he win his eighth tour-level title Sunday, Alcaraz will join World No. 1 Novak Djokovic with 7,070 points in the ATP Rankings. But the 10-time Australian Open champion will remain atop the rankings because he has earned more points at mandatory events during the past 52 weeks.

Earlier, Briton Norrie had a mixed day on serve. He won a commanding 84 percent of points on his first serve but had trouble at times with his toss and threw in seven double faults, including two on-match points in the final game of the match.

Meanwhile, Chilean qualifier Jarry used his heavy groundstrokes to rip 28 winners to Sebastian Baez’s six in a 6-3, 7-6(3) win over the two-time ATP Tour Argentine titlist. Jarry, who has not dropped a set this week, came into the tournament ranked 139, but has surged 54 places in the ATP Live Rankings to No. 85.

I was considered a failed captain, but I never judged myself: Kohli on not winning ICC trophies as India skipper

0

Talismanic India batter Virat Kohli has said that he was considered a ‘failed captain’ for India due to not winning any ICC trophy during his leadership tenure. But at the same time, he stated that he will not judge himself from that point of view.

Kohli is India’s most successful Test captain, leading the side to 40 victories, including holding on to the top-ranked spot in the rankings for 42 months. Apart from winning 65 ODIs and 30 T20Is as captain, what has been absent from Kohli’s achievement as an Indian skipper has been a global trophy.

Under his leadership, India became runners-up in the 2017 Champions Trophy, and the 2021 World Test Championship final, apart from reaching the semifinals of the 2019 ODI World Cup, and not reaching the last four stages in the 2021 Men’s T20 World Cup.

“You play to win tournaments, but a lot was made of it, to be honest. I captained the Champions Trophy 2017, I captained the 2019 World Cup, I captained Test Championship 2021, so after three ICC tournaments already I was..”

“I mean we lost the last T20 World Cup (2021), we didn’t qualify (for the semi-finals). We reached the finals of the 2017 Champions Trophy, semis of (the 2019) World Cup, and final of the (2021) World Test Championship and I was considered a failed captain.”

“Look, I never judged myself from that point of view. What we ended up achieving as a team and as a cultural change for me will always be a matter of pride. A tournament happens for a certain period of time, but a culture happens over a long period of time. For that, you need consistency, for that you need more character than just winning tournaments,” said Kohli in the latest episode of the RCB Podcast.

Kohli then mentioned that he was grateful to have won numerous accomplishments as a player, and insists on looking at what went right, instead of what went wrong in his playing career.

“I have won a World Cup (2011) as a player, and a Champions Trophy (2013) as a player. I have been part of a team that has won five Test maces. If you look at it from that point of view, there have been people who have never won the World Cup. I am always grateful for what I have.”

“I was lucky enough to be part of the team (in 2011), to be honest. And what led to my selection was also amazing. I had a run of great scores and I ended up being on the team. I never expected it to happen. When things are meant to be, they are meant to be. There were people in the team, such as Sachin Tendulkar – who was playing his sixth World Cup. And I was able to be a part of the team the first time, and be a part of the winning side.”

“If I had to look at what’s gone wrong in my career, I look at what’s gone right and I am grateful for that. I am not mad about my trophy cabinet being full. To be, that has always been a by-product of how you conduct yourself, the kind of discipline you have, and how you are striving towards excellence on a daily basis, and I feel I have been very honest about that aspect of the game,” he concluded.

Amazon Luna may add Epic Games’ Fortnite

0

As cloud gaming platform Amazon Luna has been losing games lately, it now appears to be adding one of the world’s most popular games, Fortnite, developed by Epic Games.

This week, an Amazon Luna user on Reddit discovered Fortnite in their library, but the game was quickly removed, reports 9to5Google.

The game’s listing in the Luna web app was marked as “Not Available,” but a screenshot showed the latest version of the game with artwork from the Chapter 4, Season One trailer in place.

According to the Reddit user who briefly saw the game in their library, they were able to link their Epic Games account — functionality that Amazon Luna was not known to have — and the game was listed as supporting play on accounts that subscribe to Amazon Luna+ or have Amazon Prime.

As a result, many users will be able to play the game for free on the cloud platform, said the report.

Amazon Luna lost more than 50 games from its Luna+ subscription this month.

Luna dropped 53 games, including titles like ‘Snake Pass’, ‘Retro Classic: Gate of Doom’ and ‘Bridge Constructor Portal’.

“Our goal with Amazon Luna has always been to keep our selection as fresh as possible and to offer a wide array of high-quality, immersive games for our customers. With that in mind, we’ll be refreshing our content offerings,” Amazon explained in a statement to 9To5Google.

It also dropped many games throughout last December and January.

NASA set to send SpaceX Crew-6 mission to ISS early next week

0

The US space agency is geared up to send four astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS) aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket that will launch the company’s Dragon Endeavour spacecraft.

The SpaceX Crew-6 mission will carry NASA astronauts Stephen Bowen and Warren “Woody” Hoburg, United Arab Emirates (UAE) astronaut Sultan Alneyadi, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev to the space station for a six-month science mission.

The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket has reached a key milestone ahead of liftoff.

While standing on the launch pad at Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Complex 39A in Florida, the rocket’s nine Merlin first-stage engines roared to life for seven seconds, completing the routine but critical integrated static fire test, the US space agency said in a statement late on Friday.

This is the sixth crew rotation mission with astronauts using the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft on a Falcon 9 rocket to the orbiting laboratory as part of the agency’s Commercial Crew Programme.

In October last year, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket took NASA astronauts Nicole Mann and Josh Cassada, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut Koichi Wakata, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Anna Kikina to the ISS.

During their stay, the Crew-5 mission was set to conduct more than 200 science experiments and technology demonstrations, including studies on printing human organs in space and a better understanding of heart disease.

The Crew-5 mission conducted new scientific research in areas such as cardiovascular health, bioprinting, and fluid behavior in microgravity to prepare for human exploration beyond low-Earth orbit and to benefit life on Earth.

Meta rolls out its paid verification in Australia, New Zealand

Meta has rolled out its paid subscription plan for Facebook and Instagram to users based in Australia and New Zealand.

The subscription plan known as “Meta Verified” offers a verified label, improved reach, better protection from impersonation, access to customer support, and exclusive stickers on Facebook and Instagram, reports TechCrunch.

Last week, the company announced that it is testing paid verification for Instagram and Facebook for $11.99 per month for the web and $14.99 per month for mobile.

Moreover, users can look at the benefits offered by the subscription and the procedure to join on the company’s website.

As the company is doing a slow rollout of the plan, many users might not see the option to purchase it right away, said the report.

There are separate plans for Instagram and Facebook, and currently, only the web plan is available for Facebook.

So, if users want to purchase Meta Verified for both platforms, they will have to pay $27 per month.

For Meta Verified, users must be at least 18 years old, have a history of recent activity, such as posting, and have a profile photo that matches the government ID they provide.

ChatGPT-driven smart home voice assistant coming soon

0

US-based artificial intelligence company Josh.ai, which is known for developing the voice-controlled home automation system, has started working on a prototype integration using OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Turn on the lights, how is the temperature, you might have asked such questions to your voice assistants like Alexa or Siri, but instead of such questions, imagine your voice assistant could also respond to nebulous comments like “I’ve had a tough day; What’s a good way to relax?

According to Alex Capecelatro, co-founder of the Josh.ai home automation system, that’s the potential of voice assistants powered by new AI language models.

“We are thrilled to be working on bringing the best of Josh.ai and ChatGPT together to create something truly remarkable – a solution where one plus one equals three. By combining our strengths, we envision delivering an AI experience that is beyond what any smart home is capable of,” he said.

Moreover, Capecelatro explained by giving some examples of how ChatGPT-enabled voice assistant would work.

“Ok Josh, tell me a bedtime story”, where Josh.ai + ChatGPT will provide stories based on the location of the home and other factors unique to the family.

“Ok Josh, the kids are coming in and it’s getting dark can you make sure the kitchen is ready for them?” where Josh.ai + ChatGPT can properly prepare the space.

Bob Moses on popularity of Techno music: People like to party!

0

Grammy Award-Winning electronic music duo Bob Moses had their maiden performance in India at the ongoing music festival at Vh1 Supersonic. The artists have decoded the reason why techno music can never go out of fashion as they say “people like to party”.

Bob Moses is a Canadian electronic duo. Formed in New York City, the band consists of Tom Howie and Jimmy Vallance. A remix of their song ‘Tearing Me Up’ by RAC won a Grammy Award for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical.

Crowds gathered in thousands to groove on their tracks here on Friday night. With music coming in waves, techno or electronic music has stayed popular among all.

Asked what’s the reason behind the ever-growing popularity of the genre, Jimmy told IANS in an interview: “I think it’s that underground culture that people have to discover and then there is a passion around it. It’s not mainstream but club culture is so fun and like you can stay awake all night and bond with your friends.

Tom and Jimmy then added together: “People like to party.” They are familiar with Bollywood as well.

“The older stuff (the 70s and 80s) have this amazing sound back in the day that is distorted but the record sounds amazing. I don’t know much about modern Bollywood music but it’s like high techno but old classic stuff. We have a friend in New York and he has an amazing collection of Bollywood and he came over and played some for us.”

They were even “inspired” by one of the tracks. “We were inspired by one of the things we heard and used it in one of our songs.”

Talking about their performance in India, Tom said: “It was awesome, great energy, super enthusiastic crowd and very welcoming. They were very up for it. We feed off the crowd’s energy. It was fantastic.”

He added: “This is our first time playing in India and we will do two more. We will go to Delhi tomorrow and Goa the next day. Then we are going home and hopefully, we will come back at the end of this year.”

Jimmy added: “We need more time here in India!”

Departmental inquiry against IAS Rohini, IPS Roopa over public spat

0

The Karnataka government has ordered a departmental inquiry against IAS officer Rohini Sindhuri and IPS officer D. Roopa Moudgil over their public spat, sources said on Saturday.

The sources confirmed that the inquiry has been ordered by Chief Secretary Vandita Sharma as per the orders of Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai.

The government had taken serious note of the public spat which continued between two senior officers despite warnings issued by the Chief Minister and state Home Minister Araga Jnanendra.

The sources explained that the matters of issuing a public statement and posting private photos on social media would be probed against Roopa.

The allegations against Sindhuri of the construction of a swimming pool, violating heritage structures,s and carrying out construction activities during the Covid pandemic, and a bag purchase scam would be investigated.

The probe will also look into the violation of service laws and guidelines.

Both officers have been transferred from their present postings and were not allotted any new posts yet.

The two had engaged in a public spat regarding corruption and personal matters in the wake of which they were given gag orders by the state government.

The two public servants have been given strict instructions not to speak to the media or use any social media platforms.

Sindhuri had also approached the court and got orders against Roopa for not issuing any damaging statements against her and not to post any material on social media handles.

The court, however, has adjourned the matter to March 7 while allowing Roopa to file her objections.

Women’s T20 World Cup: Semis defeat ‘will not define’ England’s entertainers, says skipper Heather Knight

0

Aggressive, attacking, and entertaining cricket has been at the forefront of England’s approach at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 in South Africa. And while the semifinal defeat to hosts South Africa will sting, it was not their style of play that proved England’s undoing.

The playing style of the England women’s team under coach Jon Lewis has clear parallels with the ‘Bazball’ approach of the England men’s Test team.

Skipper Heather Knight feels that this new approach and the confidence her players gained from such tactics will boost the team’s confidence in the future.

Taking the positive option and looking to assert themselves in the game, England’s batters followed the same blueprint in Friday’s semifinal at Cape Town, with openers Sophia Dunkley and Danni Wyatt tearing out of the blocks.

England’s opening pair smashed 53 in five overs before Dunkley was dismissed, and the attacking shots kept on coming as England tried and ultimately failed in the face of a brilliant bowling and fielding performance from South Africa.

Just days earlier, England had racked up 213 against Pakistan in the biggest total ever seen at a Women’s T20 World Cup, and captain Heather Knight believes that performance helped prove that the strategy is the right one, even if the execution against the Proteas was perhaps not.

“I think we got pretty close to chasing the world record score, so I think it proves that it’s a pretty good strategy,” Knight said in her media conference after the semi-final loss.

“I think Sophia and Danni at the top of the order were outstanding and got us ahead of the game. We were well ahead of where South Africa was, but they were able to obviously pile runs on at the back end as we weren’t able to take the wickets, unfortunately.

“But, yeah, I think the mentality has been outstanding, particularly in the batting group. We’ve really looked to adopt something a little bit different.”

Playing such positive cricket isn’t a completely new thing for an England side who have been impressing in both white-ball formats in recent years, reaching the final of last year’s Women’s Cricket World Cup.

But the appointment of Lewis in November saw attacking intent given even more weight, with the coach keen to back a mantra that is sweeping through the game.

“It’s something we laid the foundations for I think before Jon came in, but we’ve noticed a real shift and I think it’s proving that it’s entertaining,” Knight said.

“It’s good to watch and we always talk about trying to fit the mindset to the conditions as well and being smart with it.

“It’s not purely about risk-taking and as a batter, it’s always about weighing up your risks to reward. But in T20 cricket, you don’t have too much time to not take risks in my opinion,” she said after the match.

Knight believes that the experience will be of great benefit to a squad that contains plenty of young talent.

“I think the younger players in particular will learn a lot from that. A lot of them have played in front of big crowds, but when there’s so much on it and when it’s a World Cup semi-final, that does add to it. I think we’ll keep faith in T20 cricket, sometimes you’re going to lose games, unfortunately. And today wasn’t our day,” Knight was quoted as saying by the ICC in a report on its website.

Bundesliga: In-form Borussia Dortmund keep advancing

0

The excitement around Borussia Dortmund couldn’t be greater as the team is riding the wave delivering eight consecutive wins.

They are back in the national league’s title race and the successful first-leg encounter in the Round of 16 of the Champions League against Chelsea makes fans dream of the first national championship since 2012.

For the club, the winning streak simultaneously holds dangers as not only the team’s restructuring does continue behind the scenes, but coach Edin Terzic is repeatedly launching the message: “We haven’t reached anything yet and need to stay tuned.”

While silverware has come within reach, the club is building its next season squad, reports news agency Xinhua.

Reports speak of agreements with national rival performers such as Frankfurt’s courted Japanese midfielder Daichi Kamada and Moenchengladbach’s defender Ramy Bensebaini.

At the same time the cases of aged team captain Marco Reus and 2014 world champion Mats Hummels demand to be solved without interfering with the present flow. Both hope for a contract extension for one or two years.

On top, England international Jude Bellingham is said to have caused serious interest from top European sides.

Several training days, free of mid-week competitions, helped Terzic to tighten the reins in advance of Saturday’s league encounter against Hoffenheim and the second leg against the Blues.

“We must understand there is no reason to rest,” the 40-year-old manager stated after intensifying training efforts.

After a rather poor first season, the change to a tactical 4-1-4-1 system and an improved mental approach coming along with increased robustness for the moment changed things for good.

Considering the teams struggling over the past years to secure their high-fly-phases, keeping on riding the wave this time seems the biggest challenge from the perspective of Dortmund’s coach.

Terzic urged the team to keep in mind “what brought us into that pleasant situation,” namely hard training.

Tirelessly Borussia’s sportive architect is expressing a warning “not to get affected by emotions around the club.”

“For me, it’s too much fuss about the ups and downs; we need pragmatic consistency,” he added.

The coach said the squad’s restructuring is going to continue “as there is a lot more to come.” Japanese international Kamada and Algerian international Besenbaini don’t seem to be the final words on that.

To keep the balance between future and present competition apparently has become a hard nut to crack.

“We should just enjoy that fans currently can’t wait to see us play and keep in mind that’s exactly what we intended to trigger last summer when talking about this season,” he noted.

Only person who genuinely reached out to me during difficult times is Dhoni: Virat Kohli

0

When Virat Kohli was going through difficult times over a run drought last year, his former teammate and skipper M.S. Dhoni was the only person to reach out to him and express support — not once but twice.

Dhoni’s gesture and concern towards Kohli’s well-being is an indicator of the bond the two players shared during their time as members of the national cricket team.

So, what makes the relationship tick, on and off the field?

Kohli has shared some insights into the working points of his kinship with Dhoni while speaking on the RCB Podcast Season 2, the first of the 10 episodes ahead of the next edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season.

“I have experienced a different kind of phase in my career currently. It’s been a while since I felt (this) free in the sense how I felt all these years of playing at any level of cricket,” Kohli was quoted as saying by his IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Kohli has played 106 Tests, 271 ODIs, and 115 T20Is for India in a career spanning 15 years scoring over 25000 international runs.

“What is interesting is that throughout this phase apart from Anushka, who has been the biggest source of strength for me because she has been with me throughout this whole time and she has seen me very closely as to how have I felt, things that I have gone through, the kind of things that have happenedthe only person who, apart from my childhood coach and familygenuinely reached out to me has been MS Dhoni.

Kohli shared the dressing room with Dhoni for 11 years during their stint with Team India between 2008 and 2019.

“He (Dhoni) reached out to me and you can rarely get in touch with him. If I call him on any random day, 99 percent he will not pick up (the phone), because he just does not look at the phone. So, for him to reach out to me twice has happened now and one of the things that he’d mentioned in the message while reaching out to me was that: when you are expected to be strong and looked at as a strong individual people forget to ask how are you doing?’

Kohli further added, “So, it (Dhoni’s words) hit home for me because I have always been looked at as someone who is very confident, mentally very strong, who can endure any circumstances and find a way and show us the way. Sometimes, what you realize is that at any given point of time in life as a human being, you need to take a couple of steps backward, understand how you are doing, and how your well-being is placed.

“So, there are not many places, for the people who have played the game for a long period, as strong individuals, can go and explain in a way that the other person can understand. That’s why I mentioned this particular incident because MS Dhoni knows exactly what is going on, he understands it because he has been there himself,” Kohli said.

Kohli offers the reason for Dhoni reaching out to him while stressing the point of them going through similar phases in life and career.

“He has experienced what I have experienced right now. So, it is only out of the experience, and feeling those feelings at that moment is the only way you can be truly compassionate and understanding towards another individual who is going through the same thing.”

Apart from talking about his bond with Dhoni in this Podcast, Kohli also detailed his stint as India and RCB captain, delinking himself from captaincy to migrate to a senior player’s role and his strong urge to preserve the environment.

He has been associated with RCB since 2008 and the bond strengthened when he became the team’s captain in 2011 and is still going strong even as he stepped away from the captaincy in 2021. Kohli will be RCB’s top batter in the upcoming 2023 IPL season.

Twitter shuts off internal Slack, employees say didn’t pay bills

Twitter has apparently shut off its internal communication system Slack and employees posted on the anonymous workplace chat app Blind that the company had stopped paying its Slack bills.

The move left employees baffled and no one worked throughout the day on Friday as they were suddenly unable to communicate, reports Platformer.

Employees also lost access to Jira, a tracking software that allows engineers to ship code and monitor progress on new features.

While some employees communicated over email, some decided to just take the day off and others took two days off.

Jira access was later restored but Slack wasn’t down for “routine maintenance.”

“There is no such thing as routine maintenance,” a Slack employee was quoted as saying.

A Slack spokesperson confirmed that the company did not deactivate Twitter’s workspace or user accounts. Slack rarely shuts down services for maintenance.

“We didn’t pay our Slack bill. Now everyone is barely working. Penny wise, pound foolish,” wrote a Twitter employee.

Another called the disappearance of Slack the “proverbial final straw.” Twitter did not immediately comment on the report.

Meanwhile, the platform was down for several users for a couple of minutes on Friday, and nearly 55 percent of users reported problems accessing the platform from mobile. The outage was brief and the services were restored after some time.

CLOSE-IN: India ‘run out’ of steam in Women’s T20 World Cup

The India versus Australia semifinal match of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2023, was a real humdinger. These are the type of close-finishing matches that will augur well for women’s cricket.

Unfortunately for India, they lost by a narrow margin of 5 runs against a champion side. The match was at a critical stage when India had just put their nose ahead. A casual second run resulted in the “run out” of their captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, which was an unsavory end to her stupendous innings.

Her departure was the catalyst that revived the Australian spirits. The Indian women, thereafter, fought well, however, the untiring and tenacious fielding efforts by the Australians, kept them just ahead.

The captains of both sides showed exemplary leadership. They were determined to lead from the front and Lannings for Australia and Kaur for India were superbly brilliant in their batting display.

The famous song, “Give me one moment in time” sung during the 1988 Summer Olympics by Whitney Houston comes to my mind. Harmanpreet, heartbroken and teary-eyed, will forever remember that moment in which she erred on the basics of cricket’s running between the wickets of not dragging one’s bat. She took her eyes off the ball and with both her feet off the ground succumbed at that crucial moment.

In sports, and also very much in cricket, these are the blemishes that remain as life-long memories and ones that need to be buried quickly.

The Indian women’s cricket side under Harmanpreet’s captaincy and coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar seems a side that looks confident and one that could combine to become the best.

India seems to be the only side that is close to toppling the two leading women’s sides in World cricket — Australia and England. The major differences between India and them are in the area of fielding and mental strength.

The famous cricket sayings of “catches win matches” and “a run saved is a run earned”, are so relevant to the present Indian side. Shafali Verma, India’s young dynamic batter, is a good example of one who needs a major effort in improving her fielding.

It is not her fitness but her confidence in her ability to catch. India erred by fielding her at the boundary. She needs the ball to come to her when she has the least amount of time to think. A catch on a far-off boundary requires one to be mentally relaxed and calm. The hyperactive ones go through mental trauma of plenty of thoughts and at times could be detrimental in their approach to either fielding or catching the ball.

I loved fielding close to the bat and especially in the in-field. The sharp or quick catches gave me no time to think and my muscle memory through plenty of practice took over. However, for catching in the deep, I had to train my mind to relax, especially when the ball was on a descending trajectory toward me.

During the ’70s, we had the likes of Eknath Solkar, Karsan Ghavri, Madanlal, or Kapil Dev fielding on the boundary. One has not seen either of them dropping a catch. They seemed so cool and collected while pouching a catch and Ghavri did so humming an Indian song. Solkar, was the best in the trade for his brilliant fielding, not only for his close catching but his all-around ability to be the best anywhere in the field. He seemed to revel in wherever he stood and it was solely because of his utmost confidence in his ability.

The Indian women’s cricket appears to have identified a core group of 20 players, who by and large make up the final XI. The challenge for the Indian side is to identify the ideal position for each one of them. Cricket is not just about batting and bowling but one of the most important areas downplayed at most times is “fielding”.

The great Tiger Pataudi, India’s innovative captain, who was another of India’s brilliant fielders, once said to me quite astutely, “If we in the ’60s had a good fielding side, we would have consistently won against the best”. He went on to say that we had the most outstanding bowling attack as well as formidable batters. Unfortunately, the opponent’s batters relished our dropped catches, many of them would not have had not “one life”, but several.

India started winning in the early 70s once they had a good consortium of close catchers. However, the fielders only came into play at the latter part of a Test match, once the wicket was reasonably worn-out. The out fielding remained the Achilles heel and the improvement in it has been instrumental in many of the present Indian side’s victories.

The women’s IPL will be an important platform for Indian women’s cricketers to learn and excel at their skills as regards their fielding. The live coverage of matches, being viewed by millions of cricket fans, is a good incentive to make them fitter and faster. Identified as a slow plodder for a cricketer by masses of viewers, is as hurtful as not getting runs or wickets.

The Indian women’s side has shown that they have the skills to compete with the best. The team under Kanitkar and his support staff just need to put them through plenty of fielding drills and the hard yards that one needs to become a good fielder.

One will then see them running their opponents out, thereafter.
