After pap invades Alia’s privacy, Anushka, Arjun & others call out media house

Bollywood actress and new mother Alia Bhatt on Tuesday called out a media publication for clicking her pictures at her residence without her consent. And now, a string of Hindi film personalities have lashed out at the publication.

Alia took to Instagram, where she stated and called out the publication for posting pictures of her without her consent. The actress went on to tag the Mumbai Police.

She wrote: “Are you kidding me? I was at my house having a perfectly normal afternoon sitting in my living room when I felt something watching me… I looked up and saw two men on the terrace of my neighboring building with a camera right at me! In what world is this okay and allowed? This is a gross invasion of someone’s privacy and it’s safe to say all lines were crossed.”

Now, celebs have called out the organization on social media.

Filmmaker Karan Johar said: “There is no justification for this absolutely disgusting invasion of privacy. Everyone from the entertainment industry is always for the media and the paparazzi and is accommodating … but there HAS to be a LIMIT… This is about anyone’s right to feel safe in their own homes! This is not about actors or celebrities it’s a basic human right.”

Anushka Sharma, who too has been a victim of pictures being taken without consent, shared Alia’s note and wrote: “This is not the first time they are doing this. About two years ago, we called them out for the same reason. You’d think it would have made them more respectful of people’s space and privacy. Absolutely shameful. They were also the only guys posting photos of our daughter despite repeated requests.”

Alia’s friend and co-star Arjun Kapoor wrote: “Absolutely shameless. This is crossing all limits if a woman isn’t feeling safe in her own home forget if she is in public figure or not for a second. Any sane person who takes photographs of public figures for a living needs to know that this is pathetic conduct and these are people in the media we have trusted and shown implicit faith in believing they are here to do a job not to make women feel unsafe or invade one’s privacy. This is nothing short of stalking.”

Alia Bhatt’s sister Shaheen too made a remark.

“So it’s totally cool to point zoom lenses into people’s homes while hiding in neighboring buildings for “content” now? Grown men. With cameras. Hiding across the road. Taking surreptitious photos of an unaware woman. Without her consent. In her home.”

“The fact that the person in the photo is a celebrity does not somehow make this okay. If this was any other situation, with any other person – this would be considered harassment and a complete assault on privacy. Which is what it is. The lack of basic human decency is honestly terrifying,” she expressed.

S.Korea to lift post-arrival PCR test requirement for travellers from China

0

South Korea has decided to lift a requirement for travelers from China to take PCR tests after their arrival here next month as the Covid-19 situation remains stable, an official said on Wednesday.

Though the post-arrival test requirement will be lifted on March 1, the pre-arrival test requirement will remain in place until March 10 to monitor the effect of the eased restrictions, Yonhap News Agency quoted Kim Sung-ho, a senior Interior Ministry official, as saying.

“We believe that an additional easing of quarantine measures will be possible,” he said.

South Korea has required travelers from China to show negative Covid-19 test results before boarding flights to the country and take an additional PCR test within the first day of their entry since early January amid a surge in cases in the neighboring nation.

But China’s situation has since stabilized and South Korea has been lifting restrictions gradually.

On Wednesday, the government also decided to allow flights from China to land at other airports besides Incheon International Airport, west of Seoul, according to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters.

The move comes as the rate of Covid-19-positive people among arrivals from China has subsided to 0.6 percent in the third week of February from 18.4 percent in the first week of January.

On February 11, South Korea resumed issuing short-term visas for Chinese visitors, and China also restarted the issuance of short-term visas for South Koreans on February 18.

The government will also increase flights between South Korea and China from 62 per week to 80 per week by the end of this month and to 100 per week in March, the officials said.

Napoli ease past Frankfurt in UEFA Champions League

0

Napoli staged a faultless performance on the road, stunning ten-men Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 courtesy of goals from Victor Osimhen and Giovanni Di Lorenzo at the first leg of the Champions League last 16 late Tuesday night.

Napoli dominated possession in the opening period, but it’s the hosts that created the first real chance as Randal Kolo Muani unleashed a dangerous shot from a tight angle across the goal in the fifth minute.

The visitors lacked in penetration but came through in the 20th minute when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia forced Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp into action, a Xinhua report said.

Napoli gained momentum and rattled the woodwork at the half-hour mark after Hirving Lozano fired a shot against the post from a promising position.

Frankfurt’s defense couldn’t get a grip on Napoli’s strikers as Aurelio Buta conceded a penalty for a foul on Victor Osimhen moments later.

Kvaratskhelia stepped up but saw his attempt from the penalty spot palmed away by Trapp.

Frankfurt’s goalkeeper was hapless in the 40th minute when Lozano whipped in a perfect cross into the box, allowing Osimhen to tap home the opener at the back post from very close range.

The Eagles couldn’t resist and had to thank their goalkeeper Kevin Trapp, who got the better of Kvaratskhelia following a one-on-one in the 57th minute.

Things went from bad to worse for Frankfurt as Kolo Munai was sent off with a straight red card following a foul on Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa at the hour mark.

Napoli capitalized on its numerical advantage five minutes later as Kvaratskhelia’s back-heel pass inside the area found Giovanni Di Lorenzo, who finished off a fine combination with a well-placed shot into the far post bottom corner to make it 2-0 on the scoreboard.

Outnumbered, Frankfurt showed signs of life in the closing stages, but Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret was equal to Daichi Kamada’s strike following a counterattack.

“We tried everything, but it was an unlucky course of the game for us. The red card, while being one goal down, killed the game. There is still one game to go,” said Frankfurt midfielder Mario Gotze.

With the result, Frankfurt will have to turn around a two-goal deficit at Napoli in the second leg on March 15.

Women’s T20 World Cup: South Africa hammer Bangladesh to seal semi-final spot

0

Hosts South Africa reached the semi-finals of the ICC Womens T20 World Cup 2023 with a thumping 10-wicket win over Bangladesh in their last group game, here on Tuesday night.

The Proteas made heavy weather of chasing down a modest target of 114 set by Bangladesh, powered by their outstanding captain Nigar Sultana Joty’s 30. The hosts chased the target with 13 balls to spare as Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits chiseled out their team’s first half-centuries of the tournament when it mattered most.

It means Sune Luus’s side is the first South African team — male or female, junior or senior — to reach the final four of a major ICC event staged on their soil. They face an unbeaten and dangerous England team in Friday’s semi-final in Cape Town.

With Bangladesh opting to bat, Wolvaardt grassed a regulation chance in the second over to hint at that home ground pressure, Shamima Sultana adding salt to the wounds with a four two balls later.

But the Proteas still struck twice in the powerplay, Murshida Khatun chipping Marizanne Kapp to mid-on for a six-ball duck and Shamima then skying Shabnim Ismail to midwicket.

From 22 for two, Nigar Sultana Joty and Sobhana Mostary carefully rebuilt and rotated the strike nicely without peppering the boundary. Sobhana was dropped by Brits on 25 but the third-wicket stand was snapped at 33 when she missed a slog sweep across the line and Nonkululeko Mlaba hit the stumps.

The 16-year-old Shorna Akter hinted at her talent by lofting Mlaba handsomely over mid-off but soon departed when she was yorked by Ayabonga Khaka at 81 for four.

Kapp came back for a third ball and showed her class with a slower ball that got the big wicket of Nigar, who comprehensively bowled for 30. Khaka repeated the yorker trick to get rid of Fargana Hoque but as the Proteas began to tire in the field, Bangladesh was indefatigable and inched their way up to 113 for six.

Thereafter, South Africa’s reply was a fraught affair from the very start. Nine runs came from the first four overs, Brits were dropped by Sobhana and Wolvaardt somehow survived a mix-up in the middle.

Wolvaardt hit a towering six over mid-on but the Brits only survived thanks to Shamima missing two stumping chances off the spinners as they crawled to 43 without loss from 10 overs.

The pressure gradually eased and the much-needed big-overs eventually came. Brits peeled back-to-back boundaries off Shorna’s leg spin and Wolvaardt brought up her half-century from 48 balls by flaying Nahida Akter twice through the off-side.

Brits brought up her sixth T20I half-century and two balls later, Wolvaardt struck successive boundaries to put her side in the final four.

Brief scores: Bangladesh 113/6 in 20 overs (Nigar Sultana 30, Sobhana Mostary 27; Marizanne Kappp 2-17, Ayabonga Khaka 2-21) lost to South Africa 117/0 in 17.5 overs (Laura Wolvaardt 66 not out, Tazmin Brits 50 not out) by 10 wickets.

Putin’s craven lust for land & power will fail: Biden

0

In a fiery address from Warsaw’s Royal Castle, US President Joe Biden assured to continue supporting Ukraine as it enters a second year of the ongoing war and said Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “craven lust for land and power will fail”.

Biden delivered his speech on Tuesday following his historic secret trip to Kiev the previous day and just hours after Putin’s State of the Nation address in which the Russian leader continued his tirade against the West and accused it and Ukraine of starting the war.

Biden started his address by saying that nearly a year ago “I spoke at the Royal Castle here in Warsaw, just weeks after Vladimir Putin had unleashed his murderous assault on Ukraine”.

“The largest land war in Europe since World War Two had begun. And the principles that had been the cornerstone of peace, prosperity, and stability on this planet for more than 75 years were at risk of being shattered.

“One year ago, the world was bracing for the fall of Kiev. Well, I have just come from a visit to Kiev, and I can report: Kiev stands strong. Kiev stands proud. It stands tall. And most important, it stands free,” he said to thunderous applause from the crowd.

The President went on to say that when Russia launched its invasion, it wasn’t only Ukraine which was being tested, but the whole world “faced a test for the ages”.

“Europe was being tested. America was being tested. NATO was being tested. All democracies were being tested. And the questions we faced were as simple as they were profound… One year later, we know the answer.

“We did respond. We would be strong. We would be united. And the world would not look the other way,” said Biden.

In his speech, the President singled out his Russian counterpart by name 10 separate times.

Biden appeared to speak almost directly to Putin in much of the remarks, saying: “Autocrats only understand one word: No. No, no. No, you will not take my country. No, you will not take my freedom. No, you will not take my future. Ukraine will never be a victory for Russia. Never.”

The American President referred to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who he met in Kiev on Monday, as “a man whose courage would be forged in fire and steel”.

“When President Zelensky came to the US in December (2022), he said this struggle will define the world and what our children and grandchildren, how they live, and then their children and grandchildren.

“He wasn’t only speaking about the children and grandchildren of Ukraine. He was speaking about all of our children and grandchildren. Yours and mine,” Biden noted.

In response to Putin’s State of the Nation address in which he said that the West was plotting to attack Russia, Biden said that the “US and the nations of Europe do not seek to control or destroy Russia”.

“This war was never a necessity; it’s a tragedy. President Putin chose this war. Every day the war continues is his choice. He could end the war with a word.”

Biden is due to meet leaders of nine countries on NATO’s eastern flank on Wednesday, and he went out of his way to reaffirm American backing for one of the alliance’s key pledges.

Yogi govt to present its largest-ever budget

0

The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh will present its annual budget — largest ever — for 2023-2024 in the state Assembly on Wednesday.

State Finance Minister Suresh Khanna said that the focus is likely to be on infrastructure development, the health sector, and education.

According to top sources, the budget size is likely to increase by 8-10 percent and is expected to be around Rs 7 lakh crore. This would be over Rs 50,000 crore more as compared to the previous budget size which stood around Rs 6.48 lakh crore, including Rs 33,000 crore raised through supplementary demands.

This will be the largest budget to be tabled by the Uttar Pradesh government.

The budget is likely to give further push to infrastructure development, IT, health, and education sectors. It would also have much to cheer about for women, youth, and the poor.

With the Global Investors Summit (GIS) receiving investment pledges worth Rs 33.5 lakh crore, the budget would have to focus on developing infrastructure in districts, other than the NCR region, in a bid to get investment proposals in these areas converted to reality on the ground.

The budget is also likely to focus on Uttar Pradesh government’s consultant Deloitte’s first report on taking the state to a one trillion-dollar economy target.

The current fiscal size of the economy is estimated to be around Rs 20.48 lakh crore.

Going by the current value of the rupee against the dollar, for making Uttar Pradesh one trillion-dollar economy, the size of its economy should be nearly more than Rs 80 lakh crore.

The legendary Indian scientist Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman will be commemorated on the National Science Day-2023 on February 28 — marking the 95th anniversary of his path-breaking discovery of scattering of light known as ‘Raman Effect’ — officials said here on Tuesday.

For this, the Tamil Nadu-born Sir Raman became the first Asian to get a Nobel Prize (1930) when he was just 42 years old, and later India conferred the Bharat Ratna on him in 1954.

Remembering Sir Raman’s outstanding scientific contributions, the Nehru Science Centre (NSC) here has kickstarted a week-long program involving renowned scientists, experts, teachers, and students with a host of events for the young minds, first time after the two-year gap owing to the Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns.

Some of the stalwarts who will speak during the week include Dr. Joe P. Ninan of TIFR on ‘Exoplanets and Humanity’s Search for Other Worlds’, Dr. M. Sasikumar of CDAC on ‘Virtual Labs (Online Labs): Perspective, Need and Scope’, and launching of a new scientific demonstration, ‘Matter at Low Pressure’, said the NSC Library Officer S.M. Bani.

Students of various age groups will have a field day with a series of activities lined up during the week — street play contests on Science for Better Life, slogan writing on Science For All, painting competition on Nature Around Us, Science Tourism and Life on Earth by 2050, a quiz on Science & Technology for Human Welfare, among others.

There will be a Giant Bubble Show and an Astro-Voyage – Sky Observation Programme comprising Science on a Sphere show on Exoplanets and other subjects, in which thousands of students and other visitors are expected to join both online and offline, said Bani.

The National Science Day-2023 theme is ‘Global Science for Global Wellbeing’ emphasizing the importance of scientific research and innovation in addressing global challenges and promoting human well-being, and cooperation among various stakeholders for issues like climate change, sustainable development, and public health.
