Tech giant Google has announced that it has rolled out two new features–Partial Custom Tabs and Chrome Custom Tabs– that will bring the best of Chrome to Android developers and users.

To keep users engaged with the developer’s application, Chrome now provides developers more control over tab height with “Partial Custom Tabs,” the tech giant said in an Android Developers blogpost.

Developers can also customize the tab in pixels for a partial overlay, allowing users to interact with the native application and the web simultaneously.

Moreover, if users’ browser does not support Partial Custom Tabs, they will see the supported full-screen Custom Tab.

On the other hand, with the “Chrome Custom Tabs”, developers will give users a fast, safe, and seamless way to experience the web.

“Users will know that when they open the web from your app, it will be running in Chrome’ so they can use their most loved Chrome features like saved passwords and autofill,” it added.

“Tesla, for the first time, will open a portion of its US Supercharger and Destination Charger network to non-Tesla EVs, making at least 7,500 chargers available for all EVs by the end of 2024. The open chargers will be distributed across the US,” according to an official announcement.

Apple supplier Foxconn secures new manufacturing site in Vietnam after China turmoil

0

Apple’s biggest supplier Foxconn has secured a new site in Vietnam, as the Taiwanese giant shifts production away from China after facing major supply-chain disruptions late last year after the lifting of the zero-Covid policy.

According to South China Morning Post, Taiwan-based Foxconn (earlier known as Hon Hai Precision Industry) has signed a lease with Saigon-Bac Giang Industrial Park Corp to occupy a plot of 45 hectares for around $62.5 million to meet “operational needs and expand production capacity”.

In an exchange filing, the Taiwanese giant said the lease will run through February 2057.

“Foxconn signed a $300 million agreement with a Vietnamese developer last August to build a new factory in Bac Giang, where it already produces iPads and AirPods,” according to the report.

Foxconn is also planning to increase its workforce at its plant in India over the next two years.

The company announced a $500 million investment in its Indian subsidiary in December last year.

Apple CEO Tim Cook, in the company’s quarterly earnings, call earlier this month, said that the Covid-19 challenges “significantly impacted the supply of iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max and lasted through most of December”.

Meanwhile, the key Apple supplier reported strong revenue for January that surged 48.2 percent (year-on-year), after facing significant Covid-related disruptions in October and November of 2022.

“With operations returning to normal and product shipments increasing at the Zhengzhou campus, revenue in January delivered strong double-digit growth both on MoM and YoY basis,” said Foxconn.

The company reported better components supply and strong customer pull-in. Smart consumer electronics products and computing products showed strong double-digit growth.

Foxconn’s biggest iPhone manufacturing facility in China, hit hard by Covid-related disruptions, gradually recovered and production reached about 90 percent of maximum capacity in early January.

Foxconn Technology Group’s facility in the central Chinese city of Zhengzhou is the world’s largest iPhone factory, which saw major disruptions in the last three months of 2022 caused by the pandemic controls.

In a New Year’s message, Foxconn Chairman and CEO Young Liu said the Taipei-based company might see a more complex and challenging path ahead.

Neglected tribal glory now being brought to mainstream: PM Modi

Taking forward his pitch for tribal welfare, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that what was once considered remote and neglected, is now being brought into the mainstream by the government.

Modi aired these views while inaugurating the ‘Aadi Mahotsav’, a 10-day festival showcasing tribal art, cuisine, culture, and traditions organized by the Union ministry of tribal welfare.

Addressing a gathering on the occasion, the prime minister further said that events like Aadi Mahotsav have become a movement in the country and he himself participates in many of them.

“Welfare of tribal society is also a matter of personal relationship and emotions for me,” he said.

Underlining the contributions of the tribal society in the struggle for India’s Independence, Modi lamented the attempt for decades to cover up the glorious chapters of the sacrifice and valor of the tribal community in the pages of history.

He said that for the first time, the nation has finally taken steps to bring these forgotten chapters of the past to the fore.

“For the first time, the country has started celebrating Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas on the birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda,” Modi said.

The prime minister emphasized the efforts of the government to promote tribal arts and skill development for the tribal youth.

Referring to the budget for 2023-24, Modi informed that the PM Visvakarma Yojna has been introduced for traditional craftsmen, where economical assistance will be provided apart from skill development and support in marketing their products.

He illustrated this by citing the aspirational districts and blocks scheme where most of the target areas have a tribal majority.

“In this year’s budget, the budget given for Scheduled Tribes has also been increased by five times as compared to 2014,” the prime minister informed.

Modi highlighted that the spotlight has been on the journey of tribal society in the last 8-9 years of his government, adding that it has been a witness to the change where the country is giving priority to equality and harmony.

He highlighted that this is the first time in 75 years of India’s Independence that the leadership of the country is in the hands of a tribal woman who is making India proud at the highest office in the form of President.

The prime minister said that tribal history is getting much-deserved recognition in the country for the first time.

In August last year, the company laid off 100 employees, with the majority of those laid off working outside of Israel, reports Globes.

Qatar Open: Swiatek stuns Collins in QF; receives walkover to the semifinal

0

World No.1 tennis player Iga Swiatek, who made a triumphant return to competition at the Qatar Open with a 6-0, 6-1 win over No.42 Danielle Collins of the USA, has paved her way into the semifinals after her quarterfinal opponent Belinda Bencic withdrew from the tournament due to fatigue.

Swiatek was set to face Bencic in Thursday’s quarterfinals, but the Abu Dhabi champion withdrew from the tournament after notching a physical, hard-fought victory over Victoria Azarenka.

The Pole will now face either No.4 seed Coco Gauff or Veronika Kudermetova in the semifinals on Friday.

Last season, Swiatek kicked off her 37-match win streak in Doha, where she captured her first WTA 1000 hard-court title.

Playing her first match since the Australian Open, the reigning champion showed no signs of rust against Collins, as she built a 3-0 lead after just 10 minutes and pocketed the opening set in just 21 minutes.

With the American struggling to find her range, Swiatek lost just four points in the opening set. Collins was unable to hit a winner in the opening set while misfiring on 13 unforced errors.

Collins leveled up in the second set, snapping Swiatek’s nine-game run to get on the board at 3-1. But Swiatek refused to let her own level drop, as she steadily marched toward the finish line to seal the win after 53 minutes.

“I felt pretty confident,” Swiatek was quoted by WTA. “I’m happy that I was kind of composed and from the beginning till the end pretty focused and disciplined with tactics. I didn’t really let Danielle get into the rhythm. I wanted to be aggressive. I’m pretty happy that I did that well.”

Champions League: Adeyemi’s lone goal helps Dortmund beat Chelsea

0

Karim Adeyemi’s sole goal helped Borussia Dortmund edge Chelsea 1-0 on home soil in the first leg of the Champions League’s Round of 16.

Dortmund took the reins from the kick-off but still had to wait until the half-hour mark to create the first presentable chance, as Sebastien Haller hit the side netting from a tight angle.

Chelsea sparked to life and nearly opened the scoring two minutes later when Joao Felix pulled wide from 12 meters, reports news agency Xinhua.

The Portuguese remained in the thick of things and should have opened the scoring before the break, but for all that Joao Felix rattled only the woodwork with his lob from inside the box following a counterattack.

The Blues came out with their guns blazing after the restart as Reece James’ free kick forced Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel into action in the 55th minute.

Kobel was on guard again seven minutes later when he tipped Mykhailo Mudryk’s drop kick around the crossbar.

The opener was scored at the other end of the pitch though as Adeyemi collected a clearance in Dortmund’s territory. The youngster shrugged off Enzo Fernandez before rounding Chelsea custodian Kepa Arrizabalaga to tap home the 1-0.

Chelsea responded with attacks but Emre Can scratch a hammer from Kalidou Koulibaly off the goal-line in the 78th minute before Kobel defused another effort from Joao Felix six minutes later.

Kobel continued busy between the posts as he denied Fernandez’s dangerous effort and a share of the spoils in the closing stages.

“We are delighted about the victory. Of course, we had luck on our side today. We must thank our goalkeeper Gregor Kobel,” said Dortmund coach Edin Terzic.

“Overall, a good performance. We competed well away from home. We played well in the second half apart from the goal against us. We got things to improve but it is halftime now and we have a chance at Stamford Bridge,” said Chelsea coach Graham Potter.

The company tweeted from its @TwitterSupport account: “Pardon the interruption! iOS users may have experienced some trouble using Twitter earlier. Things should be back to normal now.”

User reports peaked at more than 8,700 on the online outage monitor website Downdetector.

According to the outage monitor website, over 85 percent of people had reported problems while using the application, 8 percent while using the website, and 7 percent with server connection. Taking to the platform, several users reported the issue.

While one user asked, “is Twitter down or did I get suspended,” another said, “why is Twitter down AGAIN? you are running this app into the GROUND Elon.”

Last week, the micro-blogging platform suffered a massive outage when several users globally, including in India, reported having issues while posting a tweet and sending direct messages (DMs).

After receiving multiple reports of the outage, the company posted from its @TwitterSupport account stating, “Twitter may not be working as expected for some of you. Sorry for the trouble. We’re aware and working to get this fixed.”

Women’s T20 World Cup: Muneeba’s maiden century guides Pakistan to win over Ireland

0

Muneeba Ali’s century powered Pakistan to a 70-run victory over Ireland for their first win of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023.

The wicketkeeper-batter became the first Pakistani woman to hit a hundred in a T20 international to propel her side to 165 for five in 20 overs.

In reply, Ireland stuttered as Nashra Sundhu picked up four wickets for 18 from her four overs as Orla Prendergast and Eimear Richardson’s contributions were not enough to stop the European team from slumping to its second defeat.

Opener Muneeba led the charge for Pakistan, scoring 33 of the 44 runs she and Javeria Khan put on for the first wicket before Javeria was run out by Mary Waldron.

Captain Bismah Maroof added only four runs to the 68 not-out she made against India as Arlene Kelly’s fingertips just clung to a low catch to reduce Pakistan to 55 for two.

The wicket brought out Nida Dar, who unusually played the patient role next to Muneeba, who brought up her half-century from 40 balls by surviving the first of two drops by Louise Little.

Muneeba began to put on a show for the crowd, as she brought up Pakistan’s hundred by pulling Laura Delany on one knee for the second of back-to-back boundaries.

Nida was not to be outdone, dancing down the wicket to smash Cara Murray for six, but she could only watch as Muneeba raced past her best score of 75 to become Pakistan’s highest scorer in T20Is.

With eight balls of the innings remaining, Muneeba brought up her maiden T20I hundred, the sixth scored in ICC Women’s T20 World Cups.

In an eventful over, the hundred partnership followed a ball later, before Muneeba departed for 102 from 67 off Leah Paul’s final delivery, and was welcomed back to the dugout with a standing ovation and a hug from a beaming Bismah.

Nida and Ayesha Naseem also fell in the final over but it did not remove the skipper’s smile as Pakistan set Ireland 166 to win.

Ireland lost steady wickets due to lapses of concentration, starting with Amy Hunter, who departed in the second over as Nashra took a fine catch over her shoulder.

Nida bowled four dot balls in a row and then had Gaby Lewis caught behind by Muneeba, who was never far from the action at Newlands.

Prendergast gave Ireland a platform with a fluent 31, including back-to-back boundaries, but her luck ran out when she was caught by Sadia Iqbal for Nashra’s second wicket.

Tuba Hassan then took her first World Cup wicket by dismissing Delany for eight.

Richardson was searching for a partner, but could only watch on as Little was stumped by Muneeba for three. However, unperturbed, the right-hander started to find the boundary consistently, taking 16 runs off Aliya Riaz’s first over.

However, she was next to depart when attempting a scoop, before Javeria caught Waldron to give Nashra her best figures of four for 18 and reduce Ireland to 89 for seven.

Unlike Ireland, Pakistan was sharp in the field, as Kelly departed for just one thanks to a low catch from Aiman Anwer.

Murray and Paul were the final two victims as Pakistan wrapped up the victory with 21 balls remaining.

Brief scores:

Pakistan 165/5 in 20 overs (Muneeba Ali 102, Nida Dar 33; Arlene Kelly 2-27, Laura Delany 1-20) beat Ireland 95 all out in 16.3 overs (Orla Prendergast 31, Eimear Richardson 28; Nashra Sundhu 4-18, Nida Dar 2-5) by 70 runs.

Andhra HC stays show-cause notice issued to employees’ body

Andhra Pradesh High Court on Wednesday granted a stay on the show-cause notice issued by the state government to leaders of the Government Employees Association (APGEA) for meeting the state governor to seek his intervention to ensure payment of salaries and pensions on time.

Hearing a petition filed by APGEA leaders challenging the show-cause notice, Justice Ravinath Tilahari granted a stay and directed the government to file a counter.

A delegation of APGEA leaders led by its president K. R. Suryanarayana met Governor Biswa Bhusan Harichandan on January 19 and submitted a memorandum to him on the problems faced by the employees.

The delegation requested the governor to issue necessary advice to the government as he is a competent authority as per the Article 309 of the Constitution to intervene in the affairs of the government employees.

After the meeting, APGEA leaders told media persons that they were compelled to meet the governor as all their efforts to resolve the grievances through the state government had failed.

However, taking serious note of the action of APGEA leaders, the government issued a show-cause notice on January 23 asking them to explain why their association should not be derecognized.

Suryanarayana had challenged the show-cause notice in the high court. On the court on January 31 directed the government not to take action against the APGEA.

During the previous hearing, the judge had posed several questions to the government. He wanted to know if the rights guaranteed by Article 19 of the Constitution are not applicable to APGEA. He asked the government if it mentioned in the show-cause notice what rules the APGEA violated while speaking to the media.

Petitioner’s counsel Ravi Prasad told the court that according to the 1990 Financial Code, salaries to government employees should be paid on the last working day of every month but employees are not getting the current month salaries till the 15th of next month.

Suryanarayana alleged that the state government is not honoring the commitment to pay salaries and pensions on the first of every month. The AGEA leader said the government also withdrew the GPF amount of Rs.415 crore from the accounts of over 90,000 employees without their permission. He termed this a “serious” financial fraud.

Here’s how Shah Rukh Khan perfected that stammer in ‘Darr’

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has talked about how he perfected his stammer in the 1993 film ‘Darr’ and revealed how he used to bounce off crazy ideas to nail his villainous act in the Yash Chopra blockbuster.

SRK, on the docu-series ‘The Romantics’, said: “I had a classmate who had a stammer, and then we did some little study, some BBC documentary where they talked about that people’s minds become aware to one sound, and it’s like a sharp current.”

“So, you can’t say the word because you become aware of a sound. Let’s make him aware of the woman he loves the most, her name. So, I only stammer on the word Kiran. It was just for that one word because he’s so aware of her.”

He added: “I had some really fantastically stupid ideas as I remember once going to Adi and saying, can I make this phone call hanging upside down? Adi said ‘Dad won’t allow that.’ Sometimes he would come and tell me to listen I think dad is not going to take a close-up of this.”

“I think you did very well. So, you suggest, if I do it, he’ll turn me down. So, we were like the filters who kind of help each other with Yash Ji.”

‘The Romantics’ has been directed by Oscar & Emmy-nominated film-maker Smriti Mundhra, who returns to Netflix after the phenomenal success of Indian Matchmaking and the Never Have I Ever franchise.

Musk ‘hires’ his dog as new Twitter CEO

0

Elon Musk on Wednesday said that he has hired a dog to replace him as Twitter CEO.

Musk tweeted a picture of his pet dog “Floki” sitting on the company’s CEO’s chair, with the caption: “The new CEO of Twitter is amazing.”

“So much better than that other guy!” he added. Musk later said that the dog is “great with numbers!” and “has style.”

Several users expressed their thoughts on Musk’s post. When one user said, “I guess he was the only one crazy enough to take the job.” Musk replied: “He is perfect for the job.”

“Will Twitter add the option of reporting animal abuse under the new leadership?” another user asked.

In December last year, Musk had said that he would only run the software and servers teams after he finds “someone foolish enough” to take his place.

He made the statement in a response to a poll he ran, where 57.5 percent of the respondents said that he should step down as the Twitter CEO.

Meanwhile, he had said, “No one wants a job who can actually keep Twitter alive. There is no successor… The question is not finding a CEO, the question is finding a CEO who can keep Twitter alive.”

Aero India 2023: Indian Army to test jetpack suit from B’luru startup

0

Jetpack suit, displayed at the Aero India Show 2023, manufactured by a Bengaluru-based startup has caught the attention for its uniqueness and is in the reckoning for the contract by the armed forces.

According to sources, Indian armed forces are all set to test the suit manufactured by this Bengaluru startup which will enable soldiers to fly like birds and carry out missions in March.

The Indian armed forces have placed a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the procurement of 48 jet suits on a trial basis. If they pass the test, the Army would initiate large-scale procurement, the sources said.

Manufactured by Absolute Composite Private Limited, based in Bengaluru, the jetpack suit has used five engines, including the turbo engine at the back.

The suit weighs three kilograms and can fly 80 kilograms weighing soldiers. It has the capability to fly 10 kilometers in 10 minutes. The research is continuing on gaining more fuel efficiency in terms of mileage.

It is expected to be handy in Army operations in impassable and inaccessible landscapes and can be handy in times of natural calamities, landslides, fire emergencies, and building collapse. It could be used as a drone, or a helicopter to cross rivers or broken bridges.

As per the company, the jet suit has 70 percent indigenized components and efforts are on for total indigenized content. It is powered by a gas turbine and can lift a soldier up to a height of 10 to 15 meters with a top speed of 50 kilometers per hour.

Raghav Reddy, Managing Director of Absolute Composites, stated that it is the most compact flying machine that has ever been built. It has taken two years of time to manufacture the product. The wearable jetpack consists of a backpack with a diesel tank and electronics. The tank capacity is 30 liters and it is configurable.

“We had not pitched into the armed forces. There was a Request For Proposal (RFP) from the Army. We have responded and demonstrations are due coming next week and we are planning to go and demonstrate to them. If we qualify, take their requirements and we may have an opportunity to supply. We are excited about it,” he said.
