Aero India 2023: Indian Army to test jetpack suit from B’luru startup

0

Jetpack suit, displayed at the Aero India Show 2023, manufactured by a Bengaluru-based startup has caught the attention for its uniqueness and is in the reckoning for the contract by the armed forces.

According to sources, Indian armed forces are all set to test the suit manufactured by this Bengaluru startup which will enable soldiers to fly like birds and carry out missions in March.

The Indian armed forces have placed a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the procurement of 48 jet suits on a trial basis. If they pass the test, the Army would initiate large-scale procurement, the sources said.

Manufactured by Absolute Composite Private Limited, based in Bengaluru, the jetpack suit has used five engines, including the turbo engine at the back.

The suit weighs three kilograms and can fly 80 kilograms weighing soldiers. It has the capability to fly 10 kilometers in 10 minutes. The research is continuing on gaining more fuel efficiency in terms of mileage.

It is expected to be handy in Army operations in impassable and inaccessible landscapes and can be handy in times of natural calamities, landslides, fire emergencies, and building collapse. It could be used as a drone, or a helicopter to cross rivers or broken bridges.

As per the company, the jet suit has 70 percent indigenized components and efforts are on for total indigenized content. It is powered by a gas turbine and can lift a soldier up to a height of 10 to 15 meters with a top speed of 50 kilometers per hour.

Raghav Reddy, Managing Director of Absolute Composites, stated that it is the most compact flying machine that has ever been built. It has taken two years of time to manufacture the product. The wearable jetpack consists of a backpack with a diesel tank and electronics. The tank capacity is 30 liters and it is configurable.

“We had not pitched into the armed forces. There was a Request For Proposal (RFP) from the Army. We have responded and demonstrations are due coming next week and we are planning to go and demonstrate to them. If we qualify, take their requirements and we may have an opportunity to supply. We are excited about it,” he said.

Guj HC upholds divorce decree on cruelty ground

0

The Gujarat High Court has upheld a family court’s divorce decree observing that cruelty is not a defined concept in a case of a teacher forcing a 12 year younger student to marry him.

A division bench, comprising Justices N.V Anjaria and Sandeep Bhatt, was hearing a petition filed by a 40-year-old teacher who had challenged the Amreli family court’s divorce order.

While upholding the family court order, the bench observed, “Cruelty is not a defined concept. Whether cruelty is acted upon or not depends upon facts and circumstances. It is only the facts and circumstances of the particular case, which helped to determine whether cruelty was proved or not as legal grounds to grant the decree of divorce. A student forced to marry a teacher, both having large gaps in terms of age and prospects, and post-marriage treatment meted out to the plaintiff in the present case makes out to prove that the plaintiff’s wife was subjected to cruelty.”

The court pointed out, “The case was specific by the prescription and pregnancy sonography report produced by the respondent (wife) support and stand to fortify the case of the wife that she was pregnant and abortion was forced on her as many as three times. She was required to undergo an abortion against her wish. At one point the wife has driven away and deserted as she did not succumb to demand. “

Roomba vacuum maker iRobot to lay off 7% of workforce

0

Robot vacuum cleaner maker iRobot has announced to cut around 7 percent of its workforce or about 85 employees.

The maker of the Roomba robot vacuum had 1,254 employees as of December 31, 2022.

Announcing its fourth-quarter results, the company said that it has initiated a new restructuring program that is expected to deliver net annualized savings of approximately $14 million.

“As part of this restructuring, the company plans to reduce its workforce by approximately 7 percent, or approximately 85 employees, primarily by streamlining certain functions across the company,” said iRobot.

In addition to the reduction in force, iRobot’s 2023 operating plan incorporates scaled-back working media and other demand-generation activities, limited investment in non-robotic product categories, and “minimal new hiring plans in 2023”.

The revenue for the fourth quarter of 2022 was $357.9 million, compared with $455.4 million in the fourth quarter of 2021.

Full-year 2022 revenue of $1,183.4 million declined 24 percent from $1,565.0 million in 2021, said the company.

In August last year, the consumer robot company, acquired by Amazon for $1.7 billion, laid off 10 percent of its workforce — nearly 140 workers.

The company had said that to better align its cost structure with near-term revenue, it was in the process of initiating a “restructuring of its operations”.

iRobot introduced the first Roomba robot vacuum in 2002 and has sold millions of robots worldwide for cleaning, mapping, and navigation.

Women’s T20 World Cup: Lanning steers Australia to 8-wicket win over Bangladesh

0

Meg Lannings unbeaten 48 guided Australia to an eight-wicket win over Bangladesh as the reigning ICC Womens T20 World Cup champions recorded their second successive victory, here.

Lanning led a successful pursuit of Bangladesh’s 107, of which captain Nigar Sultana Joty contributed 57, with Georgia Wareham (3/20) among the Australian bowlers to shine on Tuesday night.

Darcie Brown chipped in with two for 23 before Alyssa Healy and Lanning’s partnership of 72 laid the foundations for the chase.

Bangladesh opted to bat upon winning the toss but they lost Shamima Sultana early, Beth Mooney taking a brilliant catch at extra cover from the bowling of Brown. The fast bowler’s second wicket soon followed as she uprooted Murshida Khatun’s leg stump with just 11 runs on the board.

Up stepped Bangladesh’s leading run scorer and captain Joty, who struck back-to-back fours to inject some momentum into the innings. By the end of the powerplay, she had 21 of 13 after hitting Alana King for four and a six in quick succession.

The skipper lost the company of Sobhana Mostary, who offered an easy catch to King and a first wicket for Wareham, who was making her first appearance in the competition.

Brown thought she had taken her third scalp of the evening just after the midway stage when Shorna Akter was given out caught behind, but the young batter survived on review.

The 16-year-old also escaped an lbw appeal in the next over and subsequently gave Joty a platform to become the first Bangladeshi to score an ICC Women’s T20 World Cup half-century, her’s from 41 balls, including seven boundaries.

Wareham struck twice in the 17th over, bowling Shorna for 12 shortly after the teenager’s first boundary, before repeating the trick to dismiss Rumana Ahmed and leave the score 90 for five.

Joty then departed, Lanning taking a routine catch from the bowling of Ashleigh Gardner before Megan Schutt dismissed Nahida Akter at the death.

Marufa Akter, who shone in Bangladesh’s opener against Sri Lanka, picked up where she left off in the reply by taking the key early wicket of Mooney for two, but Alyssa Healy and Lanning soon started motoring. They hit five boundaries, including a fine six from the former, in the space of 11 balls to carry Australia to 45 for one by the end of the powerplay.

Lanning was then put down by Marufa, the 18-year-old unable to prevent the ball from squirming under her ambitious dive and away for four.

The second-wicket partnership soon passed 50 but was ended when Healy picked out Joty to provide Shorna with a breakthrough.

Gardner joined Lanning at the crease and hit the boundary from the second ball of the 18th over to take Australia top of Group 1.

Australia stays in Gqeberha to face table-toppers Sri Lanka on Thursday, while Bangladesh takes on New Zealand at Newlands the following day.

Brief Scores:

Bangladesh 107/7 in 20 overs (Nigar Sultana 57; Georgia Wareham 3-20, Darcie Brown 2-23) lost to Australia 111/3 in 18.2 overs (Meg Lanning 48 not out, Alyssa Healy 37; Shorna Akter 1/12) by 8 wickets.

AC Milan beat Spurs 1-0 in Champions League

0

AC Milan registered a morale-boosting victory, as they beat Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16, with Brahim Diaz’s early strike proving decisive.

It was Milan’s first knockout fixture at the European elites stage since the 2013-2014 season, as they entered the San Siro stadium without Mike Maignan, Ismael Bennacer, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Spurs also had a long list of absentees, as they lost Hugo Lloris and Rodrigo Bentancur due to injury, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg suspended.

Milan had a poor domestic form since the start of 2023, but made short work of Italian tactician Antonio Conte’s Spurs, as they scored the solo goal just seven minutes into the game when Fraser Forster denied Theo Hernandez at the near post and made a save on Diaz’s rebound, but could do nothing to the Spaniard’s follow-up, a Xinhua report said.

On Tuesday night, the Rossoneri remained firm after going ahead and held onto their 1-0 lead, while Tottenham’s trump card Harry Kane was under the constant watch of Simon Kjaer.

The return leg will be held on March 8 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

NSA for those using unfair means in exams: CM Yogi

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has asked officials to impose National Security Act (NSA) against those involved in unfair practices in the upcoming UP Board 2023 exams for Class 10 and 12, beginning from February 16.

Moreover, FIRs will also be lodged against room invigilators and center administrators found involved in the activities of cheating.

According to the government spokesman, the chief minister has ordered the officers that static and sector magistrates should be appointed at each examination center by the district magistrates.

Last year, the board suffered a major embarrassment after the English language question paper of Class 12 got leaked in 24 districts.

The spokesman said, “They will be required to report to the district inspector of schools along with the district magistrate after the examination is over so that daily activities can be monitored. On the other hand, for the first time, a separate room will be made apart from the principal’s room for monitoring the exam.”

In addition, the copies will be kept in a double lock cupboard and a CCTV camera will be placed for its monitoring round the clock.

After the appointment of room inspectors in all districts, they will be given strict training before the exam. The sector and static magistrates, center administrators, and external center administrators will also be trained in the district.

Yogi Adityanath has directed that a separate strong room should be made for the safety of question papers having 24-hour deployment of two armed policemen with their CCTV monitoring.

He has also called for installing voice-equipped CCTV, digital voice recorders, router devices, and high-speed broadband connections at examination centres.

“Strict action should be taken against anyone who is absent during this period. In such a situation, the permission of the district magistrate or the additional district magistrate will be necessary while opening the question paper,” the guidelines said.

This year, a total of 58,85,745 students, including 31,16,487 for Class 10 and 27,69,258 for Class 12, have registered for high school and intermediate examinations.

UP Board secretary Divyakant Shukla said that of the total students, 32,46,780 are male and the number of female candidates is 26,38,965.

These candidates will take the exam at 8,753 exam centres, including 540 government, 3,523 private, and 4,690 unaided colleges, spread across the state, he said.

Also, 170 candidates are inmates lodged in different prisons who too have registered for the exams. Of them, 91 have registered to appear in Class 12 exams while 79 have enrolled for Class 10 exams.

Meanwhile, a total of 936 examination centres have been identified as sensitive while another 242 centres have been declared highly sensitive by the board.

Arrangements have also been made for live monitoring through webcasting.

Besides, STF of UP Police and the local intelligence unit (LIU) have also been roped in for monitoring sensitive and highly sensitive examination centres.

WHO urges cross-border aid delivery between Turkey, Syria

0

The World Health Organization (WHO) has urged governments and civil society to work together to ensure cross-border delivery of humanitarian aid between Turkey and Syria and within Syria itself.

The WHO’s Regional Director for Europe, Hans Kluge, called the earthquakes “the worst natural disaster” in the region in a century, and emphasized the importance of all parties cooperating on aid delivery, Xinhua news agency reported.

“The needs are huge, increasing by the hour. Some 26 million people across both countries need humanitarian assistance,” said Kluge during a press conference on Tuesday.

Turkey has suffered cataclysmic casualties, Kluge underlined, with more than 31,000 deaths and 100,000 people injured due to the earthquakes. An additional one million people are estimated to have lost their homes and are currently living in temporary shelters.

Meanwhile, almost 5,000 people have died in northwest Syria across the border, and the death toll is expected to rise.

The WHO also warned that there were growing concerns over health risks related to cold weather, hygiene and sanitation, and the spread of infectious diseases. Meanwhile, with 80,000 people currently hospitalized, the Turkish health system, is under enormous strain — after suffering significant damage in the disaster.

The WHO has launched an appeal for $43 million to help with the earthquake response, and Kluge said this amount was likely to double in the coming days due to the huge scale of need.

According to Kluge, the funds would be used to assist the most vulnerable by providing trauma care, essential medicines, and mental and psychosocial support. They would also be used to ensure the continuity of routine health services.

Tom Cruise enjoys ‘fun’ Oscar luncheon, Academy addresses Will Smith’s slap

The 2023 Academy Awards nominees gathered at the 41st Oscar Nominees Luncheon. Taking place roughly a month before the main ceremony, the event saw Hollywood’s biggest stars and filmmakers such as Tom Cruise, Brendan Fraser, Hong Chau, Angela Bassett, Austin Butler, Michelle Williams, and Steven Spielberg greeting each other and posing together.

Cruise, who starred in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and is nominated as producer of the film, made his first appearance of the season on the awards circuit that night. He was swarmed by everyone else in the Beverly Hilton International Ballroom and was enjoying the moment. “This is fun,” he told People at one point during the luncheon. “I’m enjoying it.”

The 60-year-old was also seen taking pictures with ‘Elvis’ star Butler, while “Everything Everywhere All at Once” star Ke Huy Quan reunited with Spielberg, who directed him in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”. The two posed together for a goofy selfie, reports aceshowbiz.com.

On a more serious note, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president Janet Yang took the opportunity to address Will Smith’s slap of Chris Rock at last year’s Oscars. “I’m sure you all remember we experienced an unprecedented event at the Oscars,” she told the group, before admitting, “What happened onstage was fully unacceptable, and the response from our organization was inadequate.”

She added: “We learned from this that the Academy must be fully transparent and accountable in our actions, and particularly in times of crisis we must act swiftly, compassionately, and decisively for ourselves and for our industry. You should and can expect no less from us going forward.”

Yang went on to note that the Academy’s efforts to “maintain the highest of standards while creating the changes we wish to see” in the film industry include inspiring young people who want to work in film.

“This is how we create the global film community of the future, one that’s open to ideas and cultures from all corners,” she explained. “I urge us all to focus our efforts on nurturing the extraordinary, brilliant community that we inhabit.”

Yang also told this year’s nominees to stick with the allotted time for their acceptance speeches. “One rule we ask of those privileged to take the stage on Oscar night: the 45-second rule. Your acceptance speech must be 45 seconds tops. We’ve worked really hard to keep all the awards live this year, so we need to keep the speeches short,” she pleaded.
