Azam Khan, son get 2 years in jail

A special MP-MLA court in Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad has sentenced senior Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan and his son Abdullah Azam Khan to two years in jail in a 2008 case.

The two were, however, later granted bail.

A case was registered against Azam Khan, his son, and seven others at Chhajlet police station of Moradabad district on January 29, 2008, after SP leaders staged a dharna on the road to protest the checking of Azam Khan’s car by the police.

The police later booked all the nine accused, including SP leaders Mehboob Ali, Hazi Ikram Qureshi, Paras Jain, D.P. Yadav, and Rajesh Yadav, under sections 341, 353 of the Indian Penal Code and the Criminal Law Amendment Act.

Too early to gauge spillovers of central bank digital currency: Sitharaman

0

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday told the Parliament that it is still too early to gauge the spillovers of the central bank digital currency (CBDC) while assailing concerns on whether it would impinge on an individual’s autonomy.

Replying to a question on the CBDC during Question Hour in Lok Sabha, she said that digital currency is something that the RBI issues.

“Reserve Bank of India has come up with a pilot project in terms of retail and wholesale use of digital currencies for which there are several sandboxes created so that use cases can be tested. It is only during this process and immediately after that can there be any kind of understanding of how the retail or the wholesale use of digital currencies will have any spillovers for which any action has to be planned. It has been introduced since last December. We will wait for the outcomes from there,” the Finance Minister said in her reply.

DMK member T. Sumathy had expressed concern while asking a question on the CBDC, whether the concept of programmable money brought forth by CBDC could potentially impinge on an individual’s autonomy, thus leading to an all-controlling state.

5G tech opens immense possibilities: Industry experts on World Radio Day

0

The convergence of radio broadcasting and Internet Protocol (IP) services via 4G and 5G technologies open new possibilities for the discovery of content, personalized experiences, and interactive media in India, industry experts said on Monday.

On the occasion of World Radio Day, the experts said that the radio industry has the potential to thrive if encouraged with a level-playing field to co-exist with the digital ecosystem.

In June 1923, the Radio Club of Bombay made the first-ever broadcast in the country.

“Ever since we have achieved phenomenal growth and after 100 years, we are only thriving. At one end of the spectrum, radio works as the last mile approach, and at the other end, it assists advertisers to reach the audiences in media dark corners,” Nisha Narayanan, Director, and COO, of RED FM and Magic FM, told IANS.

Radio offers reasonableness, wide reach, interest group selectivity, and convenient message conveyance.

The industry can thrive by allowing news and current affairs on the radio.

“This can further encourage more players to join the ecosystem and make it less monopolistic in nature,” Narayanan added. On November 3, 2011, UNESCO declared February 13 as World Radio Day.

It is observed to preserve the importance of radio as well as to encourage decision-makers to provide access to information through radio. The theme for the World Radio Day this year is ‘Radio and Peace’.

“Radio broadcasters have a rich history of bringing people and communities together with entertainment, information, and public safety. Radio is poised for new successes and growth in the next few years,” said Ashruf El Dinary, SVP, Xperi Digital Platform, and HD Radio.

“The innovative services will create new opportunities for radio broadcasters to better serve their local communities,” El Dinary told Media. For RJ Supriya at Fever FM, radio is an emotion.

“In a world where our screens have taken over, radio is the theatre of mind that reminds us of the simplicity of life. Today I celebrate every listener, every fellow colleague, and every artist who makes radio magical in every way,” she said.

Samsung to use 100% recycled plastics in all its mobile phones by 2050

0

Samsung Electronics on Monday said it aims to broaden the use of eco-conscious materials to all its smartphone products in the coming years.

The world’s largest smartphone maker said it plans to use recycled plastic materials in all its new flagship Galaxy smartphones and stop using plastics in packaging by 2025, reports Yonhap news agency.

It also aims to use 100 percent recycled plastic parts in all of its smartphone products by 2050.

“You might question what impact our campaign can have on the Earth’s environment, but it is quite a considerable amount given Samsung’s vast product portfolio,” Park Sung-sun, executive vice president and head of the Mechanical R&D Team of Samsung’s Mobile eXperience division, said during a press briefing in Seoul.

“We think it can have small but meaningful reverberations to each customer,” he added.

In early February, Samsung launched new Galaxy S flagship smartphones in three models — Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23 Plus, and the luxury model Galaxy S23 Ultra.

To further its sustainability efforts, Samsung’s Galaxy S23 Ultra uses 12 internal and external components made from eco-conscious materials, up from six in its predecessor.

The Galaxy S23 and Plus models use 11 such components each.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra uses recycled plastics from discarded PET bottles in the back glass and front case, and recycled aluminum in the side key, volume key, and SIM tray.

The luxury model also uses front and back glass that contains an average of 22 percent of recycled content, according to the tech giant.

Samsung said the use of recycled ocean-bound plastics in the new flagship series could prevent more than 15 tons of discarded fishing nets from polluting the oceans by 2023.

Samsung has been working jointly with partners to increase the recycling of rare materials such as gold and cobalt, Park said.

“As we believe the (sustainability) efforts are part of corporate social responsibility, we try to minimize any impact on prices and not to pass price burden onto consumers,” he added.

How cinema promotes AI as product of lone male geniuses

0

Artificial intelligence (AI) is suffering from severe gender imbalance, risking the development of discriminatory technology and cinema promotes it as the product of lone male geniuses with God-like complexes, researchers have revealed.

The study by the University of Cambridge found that just 8 percent of all depictions of AI professionals from a century of the film are women — and half of these are shown as subordinate to men.

Researchers said that such cultural tropes and a lack of female representation affects career aspirations and sector recruitment.

Without enough women building AI, there is a high risk of gender bias seeping into the algorithms set to define the future, they said in a paper published in the journal Public Understanding of Science.

The team whittled down over 1,400 films to the 142 most influential cinematic works featuring AI between 1920 and 2020, and identified 116 characters they classed as “AI professionals”.

Of these, 92 percent of all AI scientists and engineers on screen were men, with representations of women consisting of a total of eight scientists and one CEO.

This is higher than the percentage of men in the current AI workforce (78 percent).

Researchers argue that films such as “Iron Man” and “Ex Machina” promote cultural perceptions of AI as the product of lone male geniuses.

Of the meager eight female AI scientists to come out of 100 years of cinema, four were still depicted as inferior or subservient to men.

The first major film to put a female AI creator on screen did not come until the 1997 comedy “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery”, with the over-the-top Frau Farbissina and her ‘Fembots’.

“Gender inequality in the AI industry is systemic and pervasive. Mainstream films are an enormously influential source and amplifier of the cultural stereotypes that help dictate who is suited to a career in AI,” said co-author Dr. Kanta Dihal from University’s Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence (LCFI).

“Our cinematic stock-take shows that women are grossly underrepresented as AI scientists on screen. We need to be careful that these cultural stereotypes do not become a self-fulfilling prophecy as we enter the age of artificial intelligence,” she added.

The researchers found that a third (37 individuals) of cinema’s AI scientists are presented as “geniuses” — and of these, just one is a woman.

In fact, 14 percent of all AI professionals on film are portrayed as former child prodigies of some kind.

Some 22 percent of the male AI scientists or engineers throughout cinematic history create human-like AI to “fulfill their desires” — replacing lost loved ones, building ideal lovers, or creating AI copies of themselves.

“Cinema has long used narratives of artificial intelligence to perpetuate male fantasies, whether it’s the womb envy of a lone genius creating in his own image, or the God complex of returning the dead to life or constructing obedient women,” said LCFI co-author Dr. Kerry McInerney.

Turkey, Syria in the aftermath of the quake

0

The death toll from the twin earthquakes that rocked Turkey and Syria on February 6 touched 29,605 and 1,414 respectively.

Xinhua gathered some facts about quake-hit countries:

Combined casualties:

The death toll from the earthquakes in Turkey has climbed to 29,605, the country’s disaster agency was quoted by the Anadolu Agency as saying, bringing the total fatalities with neighboring Syria to over 33,000, with tens of thousands injured.

Rescue efforts

The first batch of emergency aid, including tents and blankets, delivered by the Chinese government for earthquake relief arrived in Turkey on Saturday. More emergency supplies, including tents, electrocardiographs, ultrasonic diagnostic equipment, and medical transfer vehicles will also be shipped in batches from China.

Syria is also receiving supplies from the Red Cross Society of China and the local Chinese community. The aid from the local Chinese community included infant formulas, winter clothes, and medical supplies, while the first batch of emergency medical supplies from the Red Cross Society of China arrived on Thursday.

On Sunday, Algeria and Libya also sent planes full of relief items to the quake-hit areas. Pakistan on Sunday sent another special relief consignment as part of relief assistance for the earthquake-hit areas of Turkey.

Qatar has sent the first part of the 10,000 container houses for earthquake victims in Turkey, the Anadolu Agency reported.

Meanwhile, foreign heads of state and ministers started to pay visits to Turkey and Syria to show solidarity.

Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias visited Turkey on Sunday to show support. The Qatari emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the first foreign head of state to visit quake-hit Turkey, met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul on Sunday.

Also on Sunday, Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan visited Syria, pledging continued support for the country to overcome the repercussions of the earthquakes, Syrian state news agency SANA reported.

Problems and response

The lack of hygienic facilities has started to endanger the survivors in quake-hit Turkey.

“The issue of hygiene is becoming more and more urgent,” wrote Ihsan Cakir, deputy general secretary of Hatay Municipality on Friday. The Hatay province was one of the worst hit areas by earthquakes.

“Underwater sources might have been polluted, with the sewage system in ruins,” said Celalettin Kocaturk, a doctor in Istanbul, adding that now the tap water is not safe for drinking or ablutions. He also warned of an increased risk of an epidemic.

Wu Yibing scripts history with Dallas triumph; becomes first Chinese to win ATP Tour title in Open Era

0

Wu Yibing becomes the first Chinese player in Open Era to lift an ATP Tour trophy. The fast-rising 23-year-old saved four championship points before downing John Isner 6-7(4), 7-6(3), 7-6(12) in the Dallas Open final.

Before this week, no Chinese man had ever reached a tour-level final in the Open Era or defeated an opponent in the Top 10 of the ATP Rankings. Wu achieved both of those in one go with his semifinal victory against World No. 8 Taylor Fritz, and he continued his history-making run in Sunday’s final with a milestone victory.

“I made history here for my country and my home,” Wu was quoted by the Dallas Open website. “I’m very proud of myself and especially thanks to all the fans and my team who came here to support me. I couldn’t do this without any of you guys.”

After the win, Wu became just the second Chinese player to crack the Top 100 in the ATP Rankings on Monday. He will rise to a career-high World No. 58 just one week later.

Wu, who did not compete on the ATP Tour from March 2019 to January 2022 due to a series of injuries, had notched just six tour-level wins prior to this week. Yet he has showcased an impressive form throughout his run, during which he defeated Michael Mmoh, third seed Denis Shapovalov, Adrian Mannarino, top seed Fritz, and Isner.

Isner, who ended up as a runner-up, pledged to donate $100 to the Isner Family Foundation for each ace he hit this week. He finished the tournament with 138 aces, raising $13,800 for needy children in the Dallas area, according to the ATP tour website.

Ambition is to be a part of World Cup team and win the tournament: Babar Azam

0

Pakistan captain Babar Azam has expressed his ambition to be a part of a World Cup team and to win the prestigious ICC tournament.

Two-time ICC Men’s ODI Player of the Year Babar Azam has achieved almost everything possible in 50-over cricket over the last 24 months, but there is one more accolade the inspirational skipper is missing and dearly wants to achieve – leading Pakistan to the ICC Cricket World Cup title

Babar, who has done well in 50-over cricket over the last 24 months, is at the No.1 spot in the ODI Player Rankings, which he has held since July 2021, and named the ODI Player of the Year for the last two years.

During that time period, the right-hander batter has amassed a mountain of runs and his form has helped Pakistan remains one of the most competitive teams in one-day cricket as the Asian side has closed in on the No.1 team ranking.

But while the personal accolades continue to flood in for Babar, team success is ultimately what he really strives for and the 28-year-old gets the chance to achieve the ultimate later this year at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, set to be held in India later this year.

“The ambition is to be a part of the World Cup team and to win the tournament. The World Cup is coming up and my ambition is to perform well so that we can win it,” Babar told ICC Digital.

“You see a lot of things individually too, but my goal right now is to win the World Cup,” he added.

While Pakistan only played a total of nine ODI matches in 2022 — losing just once in that span to Australia at home — Babar’s side has a host of 50-over matches lined up over the coming months that will help them prepare for the World Cup.

A five-match series at home against New Zealand at the end of April and into May looms as the most immediate focus for Pakistan, with a three-game tour of Afghanistan and the 2023 edition of the Asia Cup — reverting to 50-over format again — all on the horizon prior to the World Cup.

While Babar has a good idea of what Pakistan’s best XI will look like at the World Cup, he knows there is plenty of cricket that will be played prior to the tournament that will determine the make-up of his side.

“This year we have a lot of white-ball cricket because of the World Cup…you need to take things to step by step. You can’t really jump to your goal. You have to achieve it step by step,” Babar noted.

“The mindset is to go step by step, but yeah you have it in the back of your mind that you need to perform well. But there is hard work and planning behind it,” he added.

1st Test, Day 2: Jadeja, Axar Patel hit unbeaten fifties after Rohit ton as India lead Australia by 144 runs

0

India lost skipper Rohit Sharma in the first over after the tea break but all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel completed superb half-centuries to help the hosts reach 321/7 at stumps on the second day of the first Test of the four-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, here on Friday.

At the close of play, Jadeja was batting on 66 while Axar Patel was keeping him company with 52 runs as India took 144 runs to lead with three wickets in hand and three days to play.

The duo added 81 runs for the unbeaten eighth-wicket partnership which has really put India in the driver’s seat in this match. Todd Murphy claimed a maiden five-wicket haul on debut but Australia will rue five chances they dropped in the Indian innings, which could have made things quite different from what they are now.

Resuming after the tea break with India 226/5 in 80 overs, Australia promptly took the new ball and Pat Cummins started the proceedings and struck off the fourth ball. Rohit Sharma, who struck his ninth Test century and second at this ground to end a drought extending since September 2021, was the sixth Indian batsman to get out.

Sharma had survived a chance when Steve Smith put down a sharp but catchable chance at the second slip. But Cummins had the last laugh as he Sent Rohit’s off-stump cartwheeling with one that came in to avoid the edge and went through the gate. That ended the Indian captain’s majestic innings, out for 120 off 212 balls. He struck 15 boundaries and two sixes, helping India gain an advantage by taking the first-innings lead.

However, India was down to 229/6 and had a small lead of 52 runs with Jadeja the lone recognized batter in the middle.

But Jadeja played sensibly and despite losing debutant K.S Bharat (8) with the score 240/7 in the 84th over, the all-all-rounder from Saurashtra, who had claimed 5-47 in Australia’s first innings, found an able partner in Axar Patel as they extended India’s lead.

He and Rohit had raised 61 runs for the seventh wicket partnership, both playing cautiously and surviving a couple of close calls each.

Jadeja completed his half-century off 114 balls, hitting seven fours as he and Axar Patel took India’s lead past 100 runs, setting them up on course for a big lead.

Brief scores:

At stumps, Day 2: Australia 177 v India 321/7 in 114 overs (Rohit Sharma 120, Ravindra Jadeja batting 66, Axar Patel batting 52; Todd Murphy 5-82). India leads by 144 runs.

NASA to launch Mars science mission on Bezos-run Blue Origin’s rocket

0

The US space agency has announced a science mission to Mars aboard Jeff Bezos-run Blue Origin’s New Glenn space launch vehicle

NASA awarded ‘Mars Science Mission Launch’ to Blue Origin’s New Glenn as part of the Escape and Plasma Acceleration and Dynamics Explorers (ESCAPADE) contract.

ESCAPADE is part of the NASA Small Innovative Missions for Planetary Exploration (SIMPLEx) program. It is a dual spacecraft mission to study the magnetosphere of the Red Planet.

ESCAPADE is a twin-spacecraft Class D mission that will study solar wind energy transfer through Mars’ unique hybrid magnetosphere.

“ESCAPADE follows a long tradition of NASA Mars science and exploration missions, and we’re thrilled NASA’s Launch Services Programme has selected New Glenn to launch the instruments that will study Mars’ magnetosphere,” said Jarrett Jones, senior vice president, of New Glenn, Blue Origin.

Named after astronaut John Glenn, New Glenn is a partially reusable heavy-lift rocket designed to launch commercial satellites and national security payloads.

New Glenn is proceeding to fulfill its current commercial contracts, pursue a large and growing commercial market, and enter into new civil space launch contracts.

Blue Origin was on-ramped to the NASA VADR launch services Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract on January 26, 2022, with a five-year period of performance.

The Bezos aerospace company is working to create that future by developing reusable launch vehicles and in-space systems that are safe low-cost, and serve the needs of all civil, commercial, and defense customers.

Blue Origin’s efforts include flying astronauts to space on New Shepard, producing reusable liquid rocket engines, developing an orbital launch vehicle with New Glenn, building next-generation space habitats, and returning to the surface of the Moon.
