Football transfers: Two Villarreal forwards on verge of sealing Premier League moves

0

La Liga club Villarreal is on the verge of losing two international strikers in the coming days, with Arnaut Danjuma and Nicholas Jackson close to sealing moves to the Premier League.

Danjuma is reported to be close to a loan move to Tottenham, despite having undergone a medical at Everton at the weekend.

It looked as if the move to the Liverpool-based club had been agreed upon, but Tottenham has taken advantage of the chaos at Everton after Monday’s sacking of Frank Lampard as head coach and expressed interest before the loan deal was signed, reports Xinhua.

The 25-year-old, who has six international appearances for the Netherlands and has scored 12 goals in 33 league appearances for Villarreal, now looks likely to move to Tottenham.

Villarreal’s 21-year-old Senegal international Nicolas Jackson is also Premier League bound, with Jackson set to undergo a medical at Danjuma’s former club Bourn

Russia aims to deploy over 1,000 satellites in orbit by 2030

0

Russia should increase the number of satellites in orbit from about 200 now to at least 1,000 by 2030, said Yury Borisov, Director General of Russia’s state space corporation Roscosmos.

In order to achieve such growth, it is necessary to produce 250 satellites per year and then 300-350 satellites annually by 2030, taking into account the gradual replacement of obsolete ones, Borisov said at an event on space exploration, Xinhua news agency reported.

He noted that the 1,000 satellites in orbit should serve various purposes, including communications, remote sensing of the Earth, meteorology, and navigation.

Russia will start to deploy its own orbital station in 2027, according to Borisov, who said in July 2022 that Russia would pull out of the International Space Station after 2024 but later postponed the possible deadline to 2028.

US to test nuclear engine for future Mars missions

0

NASA and the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) have announced a collaboration to demonstrate a nuclear thermal rocket engine in space, the key steps for sending the first crewed missions to Mars.

NASA and DARPA will partner on the Demonstration Rocket for Agile Cislunar Operations (DRACO) programme, Xinhua news agency reported.

Using a nuclear thermal rocket allows for faster transit time, reducing risk for astronauts, according to NASA.

Reducing transit time is a key component for human missions to Mars, as longer trips require more supplies and more robust systems.

“NASA will work with our long-term partner, DARPA, to develop and demonstrate advanced nuclear thermal propulsion technology as soon as 2027. With the help of this new technology, astronauts could journey to and from deep space faster than ever – a major capability to prepare for crewed missions to Mars,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson.

ILT20: Calm James Vince vital for Gulf Giants’ impressive start, says head coach Andy Flower

0

Gulf Giants head coach Andy Flower has heaped praise on Englishman James Vince for his brilliant performances that have been instrumental in sitting pretty at the top of the table with 8 points from 5 games in the inaugural edition of the DP World ILT20.

The Adani Sportsline-owned Gulf Giants have made a rollicking start to their campaign in ILT20.

Ably led by the Englishman Vince, who has been the team’s most successful batter so far, Adani’s Gulf Giants got out of the blocks at a rapid pace, with the team also ticking off the boxes during the business end of the games.

“Vince’s form has been outstanding; he is a high-quality player and he has been pivotal to our success so far. His captaincy has been positive, and Vince has been calm and makes good tactical decisions. And he’s led from the front. Also, Shimron Hetmyer has been in great form and he’s working hard too in training and he’s reproduced that in the games as well. Our bowlers, who are quite experienced too, are doing well under pressure,” said head coach Andy Flower.

“The likes of Chris Jordan and David Wiese have been good with the ball for us, and our fielding has been impressive too so far. Adani’s Gulf Giants also benefits from the fact that a player like Dominic Drakes is performing well in training and pushing for a spot in the playing XI, so that keeps everyone on their toes,” Flower was quoted as saying in a release by the franchise.

The former Zimbabwean captain also spoke about the talented cricketers from the UAE, who are part of the Giants’ squad, and said that the local cricketers are in a good space, singling out the young Sanchit Sharma for praise.

“A top-quality tournament like this is brilliant for UAE cricket. Each side has at least 4 UAE players and we’ve seen some great performances from them already, which is good for the domestic circuit here. On our side, Sanchit has been doing well, he’s calm under pressure and is a skillful swing bowler, while Aayan Khan’s had a tougher time and Ashwanth Valthapa’s also had a go. This sort of exposure is really good for these players, and good performances from them can only work well for everyone,” the coach said.

Flower, who was a prolific scorer during his playing days, and often led the resistance for the Zimbabwean side, also touched upon the fact that his side has shown the stomach for a fight, an aspect which has left him mighty impressed.

“The players have always enjoyed the challenges that have come their way. It’s always great to see the fight from our team whenever there is a tough situation, any coach likes to see that. It is good to see the players enjoy their challenges and battle their way out of situations. That can only augur well for Adani’s Gulf Giants team,” he signed off.

Up next for the Gulf Giants is a game against the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in Dubai on Wednesday when they will look to consolidate their position at the top of the points table.

Fantastic centuries by Shubman Gill (112 off 78) and Rohit Sharma (101 off 85) propelled India to a massive 385-9 in the third and final ODI against New Zealand at the Holkar Cricket Stadium, here on Tuesday.

Gill and Rohit put on an excellent exhibition of batting by hitting sixes and boundaries all around the park, stitching a stand of 212 runs for the opening wicket. Apart from Gill and Rohit, Hardik Pandya also played a vital knock, scoring 54 off 38 along with Shardul Thakur (25 off 17) in the last 10 overs.

The likes of Virat Kohli (36), Ishan Kishan (17), and Suryakumar Yadav (14) got starts but couldn’t convert them to big scores, otherwise, India could have scored even more.

Australian Open: Azarenka shocks Pegula; returns to Melbourne semifinal after 10 years

0

Two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka is back in the semifinals after a 10-year gap, defeating No.3 seed American Jessica Pegula 6-4, 6-1 in 1 hour and 37 minutes on Tuesday.

Azarenka will contest her first semifinal in Melbourne since her 2013 title run, her first Grand Slam semifinal since the 2020 U.S. Open, and ninth overall.

Standing in her path in the last four is Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan, who beat Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets earlier in the day.

Tuesday’s result is Azarenka’s first Top 5 win at a major since defeating Maria Sharapova in the 2012 US Open semifinals. Moreover, she moved on to 47 main draw victories at the Australian Open, equalling Steffi Graf in sixth place for the most wins in women’s singles in the Open era.

“Her stability and consistency throughout, I wouldn’t only say last year, I would say the years before that. She’s been an incredible player,” Azarenka said.

“She got me here (at AO 2021), so I definitely want revenge. She’s a great friend of mine. I absolutely adore her. We have really tough battles every single time.”

The World No 3 Pegula found herself as the highest-ranked contender left following the defeat of Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff but wasn’t getting carried away.

“It’s an interesting feeling, I guess. I still don’t really feel like that. I look at the draw and you have (Elena) Rybakina who won Wimbledon last year, you have Vika (Azarenka) who does really well here,” said Pegula. “It feels like there’s still a long way to go, to be honest.”

Pegula connected with a highlight-reel backhand pass under pressure, however, Azarenka consolidated a 3-0 lead in just 12 minutes of clinical hitting. The American then fended off six break points in an intriguing 10-minute hold to finely get on the scoreboard.

Despite Azarenka soaring 5-2 up, Pegula dug deep, stepping into rip on the return to erase two set points for 5-4. Azarenka halted the momentum swing with some fine volleying on Pegula’s serve, sealing her fifth set point as another forehand from her opponent went long.

After such a fiercely contested opening set, Azarenka went from strength to strength in the second as Pegula ran out of ideas. The 33-year-old rubber-stamped her authority, sprinting onto a drop shot to clatter a backhand down the line. Anything the No.3 seed tried; Azarenka seemed a step ahead.

Harmanpreet named captain of the ICC Women’s ODI Team of the Year

0

Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur has been named the captain of the ICC Women’s ODI Team of the year for 2022 also including her teammates, opener Smriti Mandhana and fast bowler Renuka Singh, the International Cricket Council said on Tuesday.

Other players in the ICC Women’s T20I team of the year 2022 are – Alyssa Healy (Australia), Laura Wolvaardt (South Africa), Nat Sciver (England), Beth Mooney (Australia), Amelia Kerr (New Zealand), Sophie Ecclestone (England), Ayabonga Khaka (South Africa), Shabnim Ismail (South Africa).

Mandhana added some consistency to her game during 2022 as she helped herself to a century and six half-centuries for the calendar year. She scored a magnificent 123 against the West Indies at the World Cup in New Zealand, but it was perhaps later on in the year in England where the 26-year-old flourished. Mandhana hit an excellent 91 against England in Hove in September and then followed that up with innings of 40 and 50 to finish off the year in style.

The experienced all-rounder Harmanpreet remains one of the most consistent performers in world cricket. She hit two centuries and five half-centuries during the calendar year, with her unbeaten 143 against England in September. The 33-year-old also chipped in with five valuable wickets with her more than decent off-spin.

Renuka secured her debut against New Zealand at the start of 2022, but couldn’t break into the strong India XI during an unsuccessful 50-over World Cup campaign.

Excellent performances at the T20I level then saw the right-arm earn another chance in ODI cricket and finished the year as one of the form seamers in women’s cricket.

She collected a total of 18 wickets from just seven matches in 2022, with her best performance of 4/28 coming against Sri Lanka in Pallekele in the middle of the year. The pacer then finished the year in style with consecutive four-wicket hauls against England in September.
