Australian Open: Djokovic routs Rublev to reach semi-finals

0

Novak Djokovic delivered a dominating quarter-final display to breeze past Andrey Rublev 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 and reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open, here on Wednesday.

Djokovic was taking on the highest-ranked opponent of his Melbourne campaign so far in World No. 6 Rublev, but he took command early and barely looked back in the pair’s maiden Grand Slam meeting.

The fourth seed nullified Rublev’s powerful groundstrokes with typically resilient defense and hit cleanly through the ball from the baseline throughout, accelerating to a comfortable two-hour, three-minute victory on Rod Laver Arena.

“Overall I think that the scoreline in the first two sets doesn’t speak the truth or the reality of the match. It was some really close games that we had. Andrey is a great opponent and a great player. I’ve got tons of respect for him, one of the biggest forehands, one of the quickest players on the Tour,” said Djokovic in his on-court interview.

“If I have to sum it up, all the important shots, the important moments I found my best tennis. So that’s what makes me the most pleased tonight,” he added.

The 35-year-old’s performance appears to have quashed any doubts surrounding his left hamstring issue, which hampered him in his first three matches at Melbourne Park, as he chases a record-extending 10th Australian Open title.

Djokovic faces Tommy Paul, a 7-6(6), 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 winner in an all-American clash with Ben Shelton, in the Melbourne semi-finals as he bids to equal Rafael Nadal’s record of 22 Grand Slam crowns.

A title triumph Down Under would also see the 35-year-old return to No. 1 in the ATP Rankings for the first time since last June.

With Wednesday’s win, Djokovic not only improved his ATP Head to Head record against Rublev to 3-1, but he also equaled Andre Agassi’s Open Era record of 26 consecutive Australian Open men’s singles match wins.

The Serbian is unbeaten at the Australian Open from the semi-finals onwards, having lifted the title on all nine occasions when he has reached the last four.

ILT20: Pollard congratulated me for my innings against MI Emirates, reveals Dubai Capitals’ captain Powell

0

The Dubai Capitals roared back to form with a 16-run victory over MI Emirates at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Sunday in the ongoing ILT20, with skipper Rovman Powell playing a crucial role in the game.

Powell led from the front with magnificent innings of 97 runs off 41 runs to help his side post a mammoth total of 222/3. Thereafter, the Dubai Capitals bowlers restricted the MI Emirates to 206/5 in their 20 overs.

“I am very elated for the guys. Three defeats on the trot weren’t good and I asked the guys to improve in all three departments of the game and they did that against MI Emirates,” said Powell about his team’s performance.

The skipper is currently the joint-highest six-hitter with 17 sixes in the tournament. Asked about the same, the aggressive batter said, “I feel very good about being one of the leading six hitters in the tournament. It was good to get some runs and get some sixes under my belt.”

Powell also spoke about the conversation he had with MI Emirates’ Captain Kieron Pollard after his splendid innings.

“Pollard is always in my ear. He was just congratulating me and telling me that I played a fantastic inning,” he said.

Meanwhile, all-rounder Ravi Bopara has urged the Dubai Capitals fans to travel to the stadium to show their support for the team ahead of tean match against Sharjah Warriors at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Thursday.

“It’ll be great to have your support at the stadium. We’ve just hit some form. We amassed the highest total in the competition in our last game. We’ve got big six hitters in our team and it’s going to be a lot of fun. So please come down to the stadium to support us and help us win,” said Bopara.

PM Modi exhorts NCC cadets, NSS volunteers to build India for future

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said the youth is the beneficiary of a developed India and it has to build the nation further for the future.

Interacting with NCC cadets and National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers on the eve of Republic Day, the Prime Minister said that India’s youth have to tap the unseen possibilities and explore unimagined solutions.

“NCC and NSS connect the young generation with national goals and national concerns,” PM Modi further said, adding the “scope of your success widens when your goals are linked with the goals of the country. The world will see your success as India’s success”.

The Prime Minister also noted the contributions of the NCC and NSS volunteers during the Covid pandemic phase and highlighted the efforts of the government in encouraging such organizations.

Throwing light on the preparations of the government to make the youth ready for the challenges faced by the border and coastal regions of the country, the Prime Minister said that special programs are being run in dozens of districts across the country where special training is imparted with the help of the Army, Navy and the Air Force.

He noted that this exercise will not only make the youth future-ready but also have the capability to act as first responders during the time of need.

Deepika is a member of ‘Tukde-Tukde’ gang, SRK a ‘PFI agent’, alleges BJP MLA

BJP MLA Hari Bhushan Thakur Bachaul on Wednesday alleged that Deepika Padukone is a “Tukde-Tukde gang member” and Shah Rukh Khan (SRK) is a “PFI agent”.

“Saffron colour signifies sacrifice and austerity but the Tukde-Tukde gang member Deepika Padukone is wearing saffron colour innerwear. Why Deepika only went to JNU? Incidents like that had happened in several places in the country. The people associated with this film are members of IS and supporters of Ghazwa-E-Hind,” Bachaul said.

Deepika visited JNU on January 9, 2020, to show solidarity with students who were attacked by a mob (JNU violence).

“Shah Rukh Khan is a PFI agent. The makers of the film had made it to insult Hindus,” he alleged.

‘Besharam Rang’ song of the ‘Pathaan’ movie created controversy over the saffron color bikini Deepika is donning and some objectionable scenes. Due to strong protests, the censor board has cut some of the “objectionable” scenes of the movie.

However, ‘Pathaan’ is drawing a good response in Bihar.

India pacer Renuka Singh Thakur named ICC Emerging Women’s Cricketer of the Year 2022

0

India pacer Renuka Singh Thakur was on Wednesday named as the ICC Emerging Women’s Cricketer of the Year 2022 after she impressed everybody with her magnificent displays of seam and swing bowling, last year.

Renuka got the better of Australia’s Darcie Brown, England’s Alice Capsey, and compatriot, left-handed wicketkeeper-batter Yastika Bhatia to become the recipient of ICC Emerging Women’s Cricketer of the Year 2022.

With this, she also became the first Indian women’s cricketer to get the honor.

Renuka claimed 40 wickets for her country in 2022 in just 29 matches across the two white-ball formats, filling the void of the legendary pacer Jhulan Goswami. Able to swing the ball or find deviation off the surface, the right-arm pacer is most likely to be one of India’s most dependable bowlers in years to come.

In the ODIs, Renuka was outstanding, claiming 18 wickets at an average of just 14.88, of which eight came in two appearances against England, and seven in India’s series against Sri Lanka. Her best performance came against Australia on cricket’s return to Commonwealth Games, taking 4/18 with 16 dot balls, and leaving them at 34/4, though the eventual champions chased down India’s 154.

She was a thorn in the Australian line-up in the seven T20I meetings across the year, taking eight wickets, and her performances across the Commonwealth Games and Women’s Asia Cup show that she is no shrinking violet in tournament action, claiming 17 wickets in 11 matches, at an economy rate of just 5.21.

The Indian team is currently playing in a women’s T20I tri-series in South Africa and Renuka is in a video posted by bcci. tv said she was happy to get the award.

“The spell against Australia at the CWG was my most memorable performance from 2022 as I was the highest wicket-taker there and the best performance was against Australia as there’s a different high in playing against them,” she said.

“Then, the second best innings would be against England at Lord’s as it was a dream to play in that iconic venue and also won the series after so many years, so it was the best moment for me. I want to thank my family, teammates, and coaches for this award.

It is because of them that I am getting this success in the last 12 months, where I have been backed and helped by the team management, captain, coaches, trainer, and physios at the NCA,” she added.

Able to swing the ball or find deviation off the surface, Renuka will likely be one of India’s most dependable bowlers during the Women’s T20 World Cup, next month.

ISRO’s rocket to take OneWeb’s 36 satellites to orbit in March

0

The second lot of 36 satellites belonging to the UK-based Network Access Associated Ltd (OneWeb) will be launched by an Indian rocket sometime in March 2023, it is learned.

“The OneWeb satellites are slated for launch during the first or second week of March by our rocket,” an official of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) told IANS preferring anonymity.

Meanwhile, OneWeb on Wednesday said the 36 satellites are on their way to India.

The first batch of 36 satellites was launched on October 23, 2022, from Sriharikota rocket port in Andhra Pradesh with an LVM3 rocket formerly known as Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle MkIII (GSLV MkIII).

“Our satellites have now been loaded ahead of our upcoming launch with @isro

“This is the final time we will load up an Antonov aircraft with our satellites for Gen1, demonstrating how close we are to truly global connectivity. Bon voyage, satellites!” OneWeb tweeted.

The Antonov aircraft will land in Chennai and from there the satellites will be taken to the ISRO’s rocket port in Sriharikota by road.

ISRO’s commercial arm NewSpace India Ltd (NSIL) has signed a contract with OneWeb to launch 72 satellites in two phases for a launch fee of over Rs 1,000 crore, OneWeb Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal said last October.

Early this month, OneWeb confirmed the successful deployment of 40 satellites launched by SpaceX from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

It was OneWeb’s 16th to date, with only two more launches remaining to complete its first-generation constellation enabling global connectivity in 2023.

With 542 satellites now in orbit, OneWeb has more than 80 percent of its first-generation constellation launched.

‘Sab Farzi’ perfectly captures essence of Shahid Kapoor-starrer ‘Farzi’

The song ‘Sab Farzi’ featuring Shahid Kapoor in a refreshing avatar from the upcoming webseries ‘Farzi’ was released on Wednesday.

The foot-tapping number was composed by the music director duo Sachin-Jigar, while the lyrics are penned by Priya Saraiya and sung by singer-actress Saba Azad.

The groovy track is captivating and beautifully carries the essence of the storyline.

Talking about the song, Sachin-Jigar said in a joint statement: “It was fun to collaborate with the talented director’s Raj and DK once again. Our association has worked in the past and we are confident that we will recreate the same magic with this song, ‘Sab Farzi’ from the much-anticipated thriller ‘Farzi'”.

Sachin-Jigar and Raj and DK have worked on many projects together, such as ‘Go Goa Gone’, ‘Shor in the City’, and ‘The Family Man’.

They added: “We wanted to curate a song that would capture the series’ essence and become a foot-tapping number that would make listeners dance and groove on the beats. Priya has beautifully woven the words and Saba’s voice has brought high-voltage energy to the song. We are sure that the song will become an anthem among the listeners.”

Playback singer-actress Saba Azad, who has lent her vocals to the song, shared, “I’m so stoked for the launch of this crazy track. It’s always lovely working with Sachin Jigar. They are so supremely talented. We had a lot of fun recording this one. I hope everyone enjoys listening to it as much as we did while making ‘Sab Farzi'”.

‘Farzi’ features an ensemble cast of Shahid Kapoor, Vijay Sethupathi, Raashii Khanna, Kay Kay Menon, Bhuvan Arora, Regina Cassandra, and Amol Palekar in pivotal roles.

Produced by Raj and DK’s D2R Films, the series will be available to stream on Prime Video from February 10.

Boycott China and stop trade with it: Kejriwal

It is the duty of every Indian to boycott China and all trade with the country should be stopped, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said here on Wednesday.

The Chief Minister was addressing the Republic Day celebrations of the Delhi government.

“Today, when we are celebrating the 74th Republic Day, two things are very important. China has been eyeing our borders for quite some time. Our soldiers are fighting bravely on the border. While the government is duty-bound to support them, it is our duty to boycott China and stop trade with it”, he said.

“But unfortunately, we are continuously increasing our trade and making China richer. With that money, the country is preparing dangerous weapons. We buy commodities like shoes, slippers, spectacles, and mattresses from China. Do we really need to buy these from the country? All these are being manufactured in our country as well. If we increase our production, employment will also increase. Crores of youth will get employment and China will learn a lesson”, Chief Minister Kejriwal stated.

On the ongoing tussle between the AAP government and L-G V.K. Saxena, Kejriwal said that the public is supreme in democracy and the government will do what the public wants. “There is a state where the people’s government has passed laws but one man is stopping them. Should anyone have the right to stop the law of the people, or stop the work of any government? he asked.

“There is a state where the Chief Minister writes to the Governor that the House of the Legislative Assembly has to be called, but the Governor raises questions on this too. Looking at the situation, it seems that a dark shadow is falling over our democracy”, said Kejriwal, adding that democracy is not being followed in some states.

Citing a report, Delhi CM said that the inflation rate is the lowest in Delhi because commodities are the cheapest here. “Electricity water is free. Excellent government school and education in the school is being provided free of cost. Treatment in the hospital is free. Travel for women on pilgrimage and buses are free. That’s why the inflation rate is lowest in Delhi”, he said.

He added that in the last year, GST was imposed on some food items making them expensive. “I hope that the Centre removes the GST on these and give relief to the people groaning under it. GST has been made so complicated that it has left traders worried, Kejriwal said.

Mohammed Siraj becomes the new number one bowler in ICC Men’s ODI Rankings

0

India’s right-arm fast-bowler Mohammed Siraj has become the new number one bowler in the ICC Men’s ODI Player Rankings for bowlers, going past New Zealand’s left-arm seamer Trent Boult and Australia’s fast bowler Josh Hazlewood.

It’s a remarkable rise for Siraj, who only returned to India’s ODI setup in February last year following a three-year hiatus from the format and was even named in Men’s ODI Team of the Year for 2022 on Tuesday. Siraj’s rise to the top is more astonishing considering that he conceded 76 runs on his ODI debut against Australia in Adelaide in January 2019.

Since his ODI comeback, Siraj, 28, has collected 37 wickets from 20 matches to be one of India’s most consistent fast bowlers and earning accolades from the cricketing world over providing crucial strikes with the ball in the first ten overs in the initial days of 2023.

Siraj took nine wickets against Sri Lanka to be the leading wicket-taker in the three-game series and backed that up by claiming a four-wicket haul while conceding 46 runs in the opening match of the recently-completed series against New Zealand at his home ground in Hyderabad.

It means Siraj jumps to the top of the ODI bowler rankings with 729 rating points, albeit narrowly, with his lead at the top over Hazlewood just two rating points higher than the Australian. Other Indian bowlers to be previously number one in the Men’s ODI rankings are Kapil Dev, Maninder Singh, Anil Kumble, Ravindra Jadeja, and Jasprit Bumrah.

Fellow India fast bowler. Mohammed Shami jumps 11 places to 32nd overall on the updated list for ODI bowlers. Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav and seam bowler Shardul Thakur have reaped the gains of finishing with six wickets each in the series. While Kuldeep has moved from 21st to 19th, Thakur has progressed five places and is in the 35th position.

Fast-bowling All-rounder Hardik Pandya has progressed in all three lists. He is up six places to 75th among batters, has gained 26 slots to reach 80th position among bowlers, and has moved from 32nd to 17th in the list of all-rounders.

In-form young opener Shubman Gill is the eye-catcher after taking the Player of the Series award against New Zealand as the right-hander jumps a whopping 20 places to sixth overall following a brilliant double hundred and a century against them at home, being in the top ten rankings for the first time.

Gill rises ahead of talismanic batter Virat Kohli, who is in seventh place, while captain Rohit Sharma jumps two places to equal eighth after his quickfire hundred against New Zealand in Indore. Pakistan skipper Babar Azam still enjoys a healthy lead at the top of the ODI batting rankings, but there are now three Indian players inside the top 10 list.

There wasn’t too much joy for New Zealand after they lost the series to India 3-0 and relinquished the number ODI team ranking to them, but Devon Conway improved 13 spots to 37th overall on the list for batters after his superb century in the final game of the series. Michael Bracewell, who was the leading run-scorer for New Zealand with 188 runs, has rocketed 71 places to 85th position in the rankings for batters.

Traders’ Body terms GST one of most complicated taxation system, urges FM for review

0

Terming GST one of the “most complicated” taxation systems, the Traders’ body Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has urged Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to announce review of the GST taxation system and all Acts and Rules concerning retail trade and One Nation-One Licence Policy for domestic trade.

In its pre-Budget wishlist, it has also urged for an effective pension scheme for traders, and an insurance scheme for traders as per the scheme applicable in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

The traders’ body also sought separate credit rating norms for small businesses, easy access to finance to traders by the Banks and other financial institutions, formation of Fast Track Courts for disputes including payments in businesses and dishonoring of cheques under section 138 of the Income Tax Act and creation of Special Trade Zones in the country.

It has also sought a policy for organizing Trade Fairs and Exhibitions of Indian products within the country and over the globe to give a boost to both internal and foreign trade. The CAIT has also asked the FM to declare incentives for the adoption & acceptance of digital payments among the trading community.

The CAIT has also demanded the rolling out of e-commerce rules, e-commerce policy, formation of an E-Commerce Regulatory Authority, a National Trade Policy for Retail Trade, and a separate Ministry for Internal Trade both at the Centre and States.

CAIT National President B.C.Bhartia and Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal while releasing the “Budget Wish List” said that the GST has emerged as one of the most complicated tax systems and as such a total review of the system is needed to make it a simple taxation system that can be compiled by the traders and easily and must augment substantial revenue to the Government.

The retail trade of the Country is fraught with a large number of Acts & Rules and many of them are a few decades old and have lost their significance in the present scenario therefore there is an emergent need for a review of all such Acts & Rules and the Acts & rules which have lost relevance must be abrogated.

Bhartia and Khandelwal further said that traders in India have to obtain hoards of licenses for conducting business activities and therefore on the pattern of One Nation- One Tax, there should be a One National- One License policy of the Government to bring much ease of doing business which has been greatly advocated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Both the trade leaders also demanded that line special economic zone, the Government should set up Special Trade Zones on the outskirts of villages with one window facility for obtaining Government clearances. Such a step will not only boost the rural economy but will also provide enormous employment opportunities.

They also said that dishonoring of cheques has become too rampant and there is no sanctity of cheques also there are often payment disputes between traders which take a long time for resolution from courts. Therefore, in order to ensure speedy redressal of such disputes, the formation of Fast Track Courts is very necessary to meet the ends of justice.

The age of AI is upon us and Microsoft is powering it: Satya Nadella

0

As the world goes gaga over the real-life use cases of ChatGPT, Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella have said that the next major wave of computing is being born as we turn the world’s most advanced AI models into a new computing platform.

In a conference call with analysts after posting quarterly results, Nadella said that we’re going to lead in the AI era, knowing that maximum enterprise value gets created during platform shifts.

“We have the most powerful AI supercomputing infrastructure in the cloud. It’s being used by customers and partners like OpenAI to train state-of-the-art models and services, including ChatGPT,” said Nadella.

Last week, Microsoft made its Azure OpenAI service broadly available, and already over 200 customers from KPMG to Al Jazeera are using it.

“We will soon add support for ChatGPT, enabling customers to use it in their own applications for the first time. We announced the completion of the next phase of our agreement with OpenAI,” the Microsoft CEO informed.

Earlier this week, Microsoft announced a multi-year, multi-billion dollar investment in OpenAI, the developer behind AI-driven ChatGPT.

The tech giant, which infused $1 billion in OpenAI in 2019, did not divulge the investment amount in the “third phase of our long-term partnership with OpenAI”. Earlier reports had claimed Microsoft may infuse up to $10 billion in OpenAI.

Nadella said that the age of AI is upon us and Microsoft is powering it.

“We are witnessing nonlinear improvements in the capability of foundation models, which we are making available as platforms,” he added.
