SA20: Sunrisers Eastern Cape beat Paarl Royals, soar into second place

0

The Sunrisers Eastern Cape banked on their spin bowlers to become the first team in the SA20 to achieve a hat-trick of wins when they overcame the Paarl Royals by five wickets at Boland Park.

After a slow start to the competition, the Eastern Cape side has gathered momentum to move into second position on the table.

The Royals may pride themselves on their spin bowling prowess, but it was the visitors that out-spun the home side. Captain Aiden Markram (2-21), Roelof van der Merwe (2-21), and Brydon Carse (2-29) combined to claim 6-71 in their cumulative 12 overs to restrict the Royals to 127/7.

The Royals were in trouble from the outset after Sisanda Magala, who was recently called up to the Proteas ODI squad for the upcoming series against England, had dangerman Jos Buttler brilliantly caught by a diving Carse at mid-on.

From there on the Sunrisers spinners dominated proceedings with only Wihan Lubbe (28) and Corbin Bosch (20) managing to make an impact on the scoreboard.

The Sunrisers’ reply started on a positive note thanks to Adam Rossington and Jordan Hermann. The latter was making his SA20 debut and made an impact with 43 off 39 balls, while Rossington compiled a rapid 20 off just 12 balls.

Lungi Ngidi provided some early hope for the Royals with an impressive new-ball spell when he struck with successive deliveries to remove Rossington and Sarel Erwee.

Hermann and captain Aiden Markram then restored parity with a 53-run partnership to set the Sunrisers on course for victory.

However, there was a further sting in the tail when Bjorn Fortuin claimed three wickets in an over to give the Royals and the buoyant Boland Park crowd hope.

Fortuin was excellent again on the night on his home ground to finish with 3-20, but he could not prevent Tristan Stubbs (18 not out) and Marco Jansen (21 not out) from taking the Sunrisers home.

Brief scores:

Paarl Royals 127/7 in 20 overs (Wihan Lubbe 28; Aiden Markram 2-21, Roelof van der Merwe 2-21) lost to Sunrisers Eastern Cape 131/5 in 18.2 overs (Jordan Hermann 43; Bjorn Fortuin 3-20, Lungi Ngidi 2-31) by 5 wickets.

Twitter’s new developer rules ban 3rd party apps

0

Micro-blogging platform Twitter has quietly updated its “Developer Agreement” to ban third-party clients, almost a week after it blocked the apps’ access to its platform.

The new rules mentioned that users can not use Twitter’s application programming interface (API) or content to “create or attempt to create a substitute or similar service or product to the Twitter Applications,” reports The Verge.

As of Thursday, the new rules went into effect.

The platform also defined “Twitter Applications” as the company’s “consumer-facing products, services, applications, websites, web pages, platforms, and other offerings, including without limitation, those offered via https://twitter.com and Twitter’s mobile applications.”

The rule update follows Twitter breaking several popular third-party Twitter applications, including Tweetbot and Twitterific, starting on January 12.

The developers of the third-party applications at the time claimed they had never received any information from the company regarding what was going on, the report said.

On Tuesday, the micro-blogging platform said, “Twitter is enforcing its long-standing API rules. That may result in some apps not working.”

Meanwhile, Twitter CEO Elon Musk last week said that Twitter’s “open source” algorithm will be revealed next month, as several people were unable to use third-party Twitter apps and faced issues with logging and accessing feeds.

“Transparency builds trust,” the Twitter CEO had posted.

Shahid cites ‘Kantara’ as example of why only spectacles seem to work

The audience’s content preferences have changed in the last three years. This change has been catalyzed by the Covid-19 pandemic, which even after three years, refuses to slow down.

Today, there is a clear demarcation in the mind of the audience about what they want to watch in theatres, because let’s face it, going to the cinema is not a cakewalk because it involves some effort and then there are the hidden costs of fuel, parking, food and beverage, and not to forget the mind-numbing traffic and pollution.

According to Bollywood actor Shahid Kapoor, who is gearing up for his web-series debut in the crime-thriller series ‘Farzi’, all said and done, good content will always work. He furnishes the recent example of the breakout success of last year’s ‘Kantara’.

The Kannada film, which has been written and directed by its lead actor Rishab Shetty, has broken new grounds and territories courtesy of its rootedness and honest storytelling, something that will define the success of a film in the post-pandemic world.

Shahid told IANS: “How would you judge a film like ‘Kantara’, man? It was not a spectacle when it was released. Of course, it is a spectacle to watch but it was the audience that made that film what it has become now.”

Delving deeper, he said: “It’s more about how cinematic experience a film could provide. I agree that there is a clear demarcation between different content pieces but I don’t see this as a change in trend. I just feel that multiple things have happened in the last three years and the differentiation is what I want to watch at home and what I am willing to watch in the theatres.”

Sharing his observation and insights, he expressed: “One thing that I have observed in the audience is that they are not willing to pay their hard-earned money for mediocre content. Unless your content is good, it has a certain scale, it has a certain entertainment quotient, it won’t work. The audience wants to watch good content. They are willing to walk into the theatres but you have to bring your A-game to the table.”

One may sit down and analyze the impact of the pandemic on the film industries across the world, but at a human level, the pandemic’s initial phase was very challenging for everyone more so for the film fraternity because to put their work together they had to leave behind the social distancing and come together.

Changing the course of the conversation, the actor said: “Another thing is that the pandemic was very challenging for the entire fraternity because we work under certain conditions, this is a collaborative medium and there is a certain way of working.

“For instance, for ‘Farzi’, we hardly met before the shoot, we were constantly on Zoom calls trying to brainstorm from the confines of our homes staying as much safe as we could.

“Filmmaking is a very touch and feels kind of a job, if you have to do a recce, you will have to visit the location and mark the boundaries for the shots, the props, or the production design.”

Shahid plays an artist turned counterfeiter in ‘Farzi’. Shedding light on his character, he said: “I found this character to be a very interesting dichotomy since he is an artiste, he creates something but his creation causes destruction to the economy in the long run.

“What I really love about Sunny (the character) is that I don’t think he knows what he is or what he is capable of. I never judge the characters that I play, it’s okay with me if people judge them or even hate them. My job as an actor is to put conviction and believability in my characters.”

He further mentioned: “My favorite line of this character from the series is that he says he is helping the system by actually putting in more money. Every criminal has a justification for their actions and so does he.”

‘Farzi’ will be available to stream on Prime Video from February 10.

0

With the Union Budget just a few days away and amid expectations that the government is likely to focus on boosting the agriculture sector, heads of public sector banks on Thursday were directed by the government to provide Kisan credit card facility to all farmers in the country.

In a day-long review meeting of the banking sector, which was presided over by the Banking Secretary Vivek Joshi, the public sector banks’ chiefs were directed to take the help of the PM KISAN database to undertake this exercise.

The progress of the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF) scheme was also reviewed in the meeting, sources said. Officials from the Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare were also present at the meeting, where a review related to agricultural credit was also undertaken.

The progress in the digitization of the process for getting the Kisan credit card was also discussed to improve transparency. Public sector banks were advised to take necessary steps to digitize the entire journey of Kisan credit card loans in a time-bound manner.

During the meeting, the progress of various social security schemes, including Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), Atal Pension Yojana (APY), Pradhan Mantri MUDRA and Prime Minister Street Vendor’s AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PMSVANidhi), and Agri credit, etc, were also reviewed.

It was emphasized in the meeting that banks need to put in all-out efforts to make the customer experience more enriching and pleasant for a sustainable banking relationship. Women wrestlers to file FIR against Brij Bhushan if govt doesn’t take action: Vinesh Phogat

0

Top Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat on Thursday continued to slam Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, saying the women grapplers will an FIR against him if the government does not take action on the sexual harassment allegations.

Speaking to media persons here, the Asiad and Commonwealth Games champion said it’s hard to imagine that female wrestlers in the country are not safe. She urged the government to set the right precedent by punishing the guilty.

Vinesh’s comments come a day after several wrestlers, including Olympic medalists Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia, protested against the functioning of the WFI and its president.

On Wednesday, Vinesh alleged that Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and a few other coaches at national camps in Lucknow sexually harassed female wrestlers.

“If action is not taken, 4-5 women wrestlers will file an FIR in the matter. If this is happening with wrestlers like us, then imagine how safe the situation is for other women,” Vinesh said.

“We are getting support from all corners and I request Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji to support us as he has always been supporting the athletes. We will continue to protest till their demands are meant. We are not afraid of Brij Bhushan anymore,” she added.

IANS has also learned that Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh might be asked to resign from the WFI president post on January 22 after an Emergency Council Meeting here.

Earlier, the meeting between the Sports ministry officials and the delegation of four wrestlers, including Bajrang Punia, Vinesh, and Sakshi Malik failed to yield results as protesting grapplers were not satisfied with the response.

Speaking to reporters, Bajrang said that they didn’t get any ”satisfactory response” from the ministry and the protest will continue till the Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh-led Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) gets dissolved.

“We not only want the resignation of WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan, we also demand the federation be dissolved. If there is only resignation, then it will make its men sit again,” he emphasized.

The 28-year-old Bajrang further said that “the whole hub of wrestling is sitting with us and everyone is fighting for their future.

“We have five to six girls with evidence, who are ready to file FIR against the WFI chief on sexual harassment case. If our words are not heard, then we will take the help of the police and also file a case,” the Olympic medallist wrestler said.

‘No rationalisation but there could be upgradations post PVR-INOX amalgamation’

The merger of two multiplex chains – PVR Ltd and INOX Leisure – will not result in any rationalization of properties but there may be upgradation of some screens based on the market, a senior PVR official said.

Chief Financial Officer Nitin Sood also said the company’s Sri Lankan operations have done well during the third quarter despite the economic turmoil the country is facing.

Recently the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), Mumbai Bench, has through its verbal order, allowed the proposed scheme of amalgamation between PVR and INOX Leisure.

“Post amalgamation, there will not be any rationalization of screens. But there can be upgrades based on the market demand,” Sood told the media.

He said that post-amalgamation, the company’s new name will be PVR INOX Ltd and the screens will be branded as PVR INOX.

The company expects to complete all the legal formalities with respect to the proposed merger including the issue of PVR shares to INOX shareholders within the next 45 days of receipt of a certified true copy of the order passed by the NCLT.

“With the verbal approval for the merger coming through from NCLT, we are tracking well within the projected timelines for the closure of the transaction. We intend to complete all the formalities within the current financial year,” Chairman cum Managing Director Ajay Bijli said in a statement.

Queried about the average occupancy level of 29 percent, Sood said the two main reasons are the Hindi and Hollywood movies didn’t do well. There were fewer releases of Hollywood movies.

According to the company, the content of Hindi movies was not in sync with consumer tastes, and the quality of content took precedence over superstars. This trend is likely to change in 2023.

Going forward, Sood said Hindi and Hollywood movies are expected to do well.

He said the Hindi movie “Pathaan” will open in a big manner and the campaign against any movie will not have any impact.

Be that as it may, the immediate focus will be on integrating the two entities and there are no near-term plans to expand overseas but there are plans to expand into other Indian cities.

During FY23 till date, PVR had opened 63 screens and 47 more are to be opened before the close of this fiscal.

Presently PVR has 181 cinemas with 903 screens in 78 cities with a total seating capacity of about 186,000.

Sood also said PVR’s Sri Lankan operations generated about Rs 6-7 crore during the third quarter of FY23 as consumers want to step out despite the economic downturn there.

For the third quarter of FY23, PVR’s standalone net profit stood at Rs 12.93 crore (Q3FY22 net loss of Rs 24.53 crore) on a total income of Rs 858.96 crore (Rs 626.28 crore).

The company’s total expenses for the period under review stood at Rs 837.56 crore (Rs 664.56 crore).

Australian Open: Djokovic survives injury scare to sail into third round

0

The nine-time champion Novak Djokovic on Thursday survived an injury scare to reach the third round of the Australian Open, beating Frenchman Enzo Couacaud here at Rod Laver Arena, here.

The 35-year-old, struggling with his left leg, edged past Couacaud 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-0 in three hours and four minutes. He will lock horns with former World No. 3 Grigor Dimitrov, who defeated Laslo Djere 6-3, 6-2, 6-0, in the third round.

The Serbian is chasing a record-tying 22nd Grand Slam trophy and reclaims the No. 1 spot in the ATP Rankings if he wins the title.

As the second set wore on, Djokovic became hampered by his left hamstring injury. Playing with heavy strapping, the fourth seed blanched after stretching for a ball at 4-4, calling for a medical timeout when trailing 4-5.

His movement was clearly compromised and Couacaud took full advantage. When Djokovic let slip the second set in a tie-break, it was unclear how his body would react for the rest of the match. But the Serbian locked in and improved physically, winning 12 of the match’s final 14 games.

“It is expected when you walk on the court as a favorite and you play someone on this stage for the first time, of course, they are going to go for their shots. You just accept it. I had many opportunities in the second to win it and I didn’t. He pushed it to a third and fourth set and you just have to deal with it,” Djokovic said after the match.

“Sometimes the situations don’t go your way but that is a sport. I have been in these situations before, so many times in my life and career, so I think that also helps, the experience of understanding what you need to do at the moment to give your best,” he added.

Djokovic now holds a 7-0 record on the season, having captured his 92nd tour-level title in Adelaide earlier this month. It was at the ATP 250, where the Serb hurt his leg in the semifinals against Daniil Medvedev.

Indian startups hail SC ruling on Google-CCI case

0

Home-grown startup founders on Thursday hailed the Supreme Court’s order where it refused to interfere with the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) decision, declining to stay the operation of the Competition Commission of India (CCI) order imposing a Rs 1,337.76 crore fine on Google.

Google had moved the apex court after the setback at the NCLAT, which did not stay the CCI order on abuse of dominant position in multiple markets in the Android mobile device ecosystem case.

Rohan Verma, CEO, and ED at homegrown MapmyIndia said that they are extremely grateful to the Supreme Court for their order against Google’s appeal.

“MapmyIndia was mentioned and spoken of multiple times in the Supreme court today by multiple parties, who said that MapmyIndia pioneered digital mapping in India since 1995, far before the birth of Google, and offer an alternative in terms of MapmyIndia’s ‘Mappls’ app versus the force pre-installed Google Maps,” Verma added.

It was discussed in the court how Google foreclosed rivals such as MapmyIndia due to their anti-competitive practices, harming Indian consumers’ ability to choose, and harming the Indian economy and rivals such as MapmyIndia.

The Supreme Court in the end declined Google’s arguments.

Google was yet to react to the apex court ruling.

On January 11, the Supreme Court agreed to examine an appeal by Google against a decision by the NCLAT.

Verma hoped that after the SC ruling, consumers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) will now use ‘Mappls’ app, which “offers far better maps, navigation and safety features than Google Maps”.

Rakesh Deshmukh, Co-founder, and CEO, of Indus OS, had said that in its ruling, the CCI categorically demonstrated multiple anti-competitive actions carried out by Google in the last decade.

“In fact, it scuttled Indian entrepreneurs in the Android ecosystem with unfair and restrictive Google policies. The CCI ruling against Google is a step towards ushering in the next phase of a digital revolution in the country,” he said.

Hockey World Cup: Netherlands thrash Chile 14-0 to seal quarterfinals berth

0

World No. 3 Netherlands on Thursday became the first team to qualify for the quarterfinals of the FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s Hockey World Cup 2023, completing their league engagements with a 14-0 thrashing of Chile at the Kalinga Stadium, here.

The Netherlands, the three-time winners of the Men’s World Cup, finished unbeaten in Group C with nine points from three wins. Malaysia upset the higher-ranked New Zealand 3-2 in another Pool C match to finish second in the standings with six points from two wins. New Zealand, ranked 9th — two spots ahead of Malaysia, ended third with three points as Chile finished with zero points after three defeats.

The Netherlands thus sealed a direct berth in the quarterfinals while Malaysia and New Zealand will go through the crossover matches.

Having defeated Malaysia and New Zealand in their previous matches, the Netherlands rode on a hat-trick of goals by drag-flicker Jip Janssen, who scored four goals in all, and Thierry Brinkman and a brace of goals by Bijen Koen to secure the biggest win of the tournament so far.

Janssen opened the scoring in the 6th minute off their first penalty corner and then added goals in the 29th minute, 34th min and 44th minutes as the Dutch scored at will against Chile, who were totally outclassed and overwhelmed by their opponents.

Brinkman scored his first goal in the 25th minute and added two more in the 33rd and 5th min, off a penalty corner, to complete his triple. Bijen struck in the 40th and 45th minutes as the Netherlands completely dominated the match.

Derck De Vilder (22nd in), Thijs Van Dam (23rd min), Terrance Pieters (37th min), Justen Blok (42nd min), and Teun Beins (58th min) contributed a goal each to the Netherlands’ score.

The Dutch virtually parked themselves in Chile’s half of the turf and earned 17 penalty corners in all, of which they converted six.

In the final quarter, Chile managed to make some good attacks and bagged two penalty corners but could not capitalize on them.

India Open: Injury forces Chirag-Satwik pair to withdraw from the second-round clash

0

In a major blow, India’s top men’s doubles pair Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, the defending champions, on Thursday pulled out of their second-round match of the India Open Super 750 tournament due to injury concerns, Badminton Association of India (BAI) said.

“India’s top men’s doubles pair #SatChi has unfortunately pulled out of the tournament due to an injury. A sad moment for all of us!” the BAI tweeted.

The star duo withdrew from the match against the Chinese pair Liu Yu Chen and Ou Xuan Yi due to a groin injury suffered by Satwik.

On Tuesday, the World No. 5 pair registered an easy 21-13, 21-15 opening-round win over Scotland’s Christopher Grimley and Mathew Grimley in just 41 minutes.

The defending men’s doubles champions were vying for their career’s second Super 750 title at India Open 2023, having won the French Open last year after beating the Taipei duo of Lu Ching-Yao and Yang Po-Han.

The Indian duo had scripted history after their 2022 French Open as they became the first Indian men’s pair to win the Super 750 title.

The Indian contingent has had mixed results in the event so far with P.V Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth, and H.S Prannoy making early exits in the first two days.

Swiggy likely to lay off up to 10% of employees after performance review

0

Online food delivery platform Swiggy is likely to lay off up to 10 percent of its employees, or about 600 workers, after an extensive performance review that was concluded late last year, amid global uncertainties and recession fears.

Sources told Media that the upcoming layoffs at Swiggy are likely to impact verticals like the product, engineering, and operation at the company.

The upcoming layoffs are also expected to impact Swiggy’s quick commerce delivery service Instamart to reduce cash burn.

The company did not immediately respond to a Media query on upcoming layoffs.

Earlier reports that surfaced in December, have said that Swiggy may lay off more than 250 employees, or up to 5 percent of its workforce, starting January.

However, the number of layoff employees is set to go further up, according to sources, after the completion of the performance cycle in October. The company employs close to 6,000 workers.

In an earlier statement, Swiggy had said there were no layoffs and with every performance cycle, “we expect exits based on performance”.

The online food delivery platform’s losses doubled to Rs 3,629 crore in FY22 compared to Rs 1,617 crore in the last fiscal year.

Total expenses went up 131 percent to Rs 9,574.5 crore in FY22, according to its annual financial statement with the Registrar of Companies (RoC).

Swiggy’s revenue grew 2.2 times to Rs 5,705 crore during FY22 as opposed to Rs 2,547 crore in FY21.

In November last year, global brokerage firm Jefferies said that Swiggy was fast losing market share to its rival Zomato despite offering heavy discounts.

Earlier in 2022, the food delivery platform raised $700 million led by Invesco at a $10.7 billion valuation.

South Africa opener Hashim Amla, who has joined MI Cape Town as a batting coach for SA20, has announced his retirement as a player from all forms of cricket.

The 39-year-old South African batting legend has informed Surrey Country Club that he will not play for them in the County Championship 2023. Amla had played a key role in helping Surrey win the Championship in 2022, the last season of his contract with the county club.

In his two-decade-long career, Amla has scored 34,104 runs across all formats — 9,282 of them in 124 Tests, the second highest for his country behind Jacques Kallis for his country. This included 28 hundred and a best of 311 not out against England at The Oval in 2012, which was also South Africa’s first triple-century in Tests.

Amla was also quite successful in white-ball cricket, scoring 8113 runs including 27 hundred in 181 ODIs, and 1,277 runs in 44 T20Is.

A few months back he embarked on a coaching career, joining MI Cape Town as a batting coach in the ongoing SA20.

Amla quit international cricket after South Africa’s campaign ended in the 2019 ODI World Cup. He had bowed out of Test cricket earlier in the same year after a match against Sri Lanka at Gqeberha in February ending a two-decade career that stretched from 200 4o 2019.

On Wednesday he officially informed Surrey that he would not return to help them defend the title they won in 2022. He rejoined Surrey in 2019, having also represented the county as an overseas player in 2013 and 2014. He had earlier had stints with Derbyshire, Hampshire, Nottinghamshire, and Essex. He also represented Kings XI Punjab in the IPL and Kwa-Zulu Natal, Dolphins, and Cape Cobras in South Africa’s domestic competitions.
