German inflation reaches record 7.9% in 2022

0

Driven by rising energy and food prices in particular, inflation in Germany slowed at the end of 2022 but reached a record high of 7.9 percent for the year as a whole, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).

Crisis-related effects, such as supply bottlenecks and significant price increases at economic upstream stages, were “characteristic of the entire year”, Destatis President Ruth Brand said in a statement.

Energy prices rose 34.7 percent year-on-year, with prices for heating oil and natural gas even soaring 87.0 percent and 64.8 percent. respectively, according to Destatis.

Prices for food also outgrew overall inflation and were up 13.4 percent, reports Xinhua news agency.

Excluding energy and food prices, Germany’s annual inflation rate in 2022 would have been around half as high at 4 percent, according to Destatis.

To ease inflationary pressure on consumers and businesses, the German government set up relief packages totaling 95 billion euros ($102 billion).

Among the measures were a fuel discount and a regular social benefits increase.

In addition, a “protective umbrella” worth 200 billion euros was set up to finance a cap on electricity and gas prices that took effect at the beginning of the year.

For the month of December last year, the state even covered consumers’ heating bills in full.

High inflation was “partly mitigated” through the government’s relief measures, Brand stressed.

Leading economic institutes expect inflation in Germany to decline to around 6 percent in 2023.

“Domestic inflationary pressure will remain high for some time,” the Ifo Institute for economic research said in its latest forecast.

Rohit Sharma praises Siraj’s improvement, confirms Ishan Kishan’s ODI role

0

Team India skipper Rohit Sharma has lavished praise on seamer Mohammed Siraj, and confirmed that young batter Ishan Kishan will feature in the upcoming New Zealand ODI series, starting here on Wednesday.

“In terms of Ishan, yeah, he will be batting middle order. I’m glad he could get a run here after that fine knock in Bangladesh,” Rohit said in the pre-game press conference before the first ODI against New Zealand.

Kishan scored a double century opening the batting in his last ODI against Bangladesh, but had to sit out the more recent ODI series against Sri Lanka.

Rohit also heaped praise on Mohammed Siraj, saying: “Over the last couple of years, we’ve seen how well Siraj has fared across all three formats. He has improved his bowling; his line and length have improved. He has especially worked on his outswing. Earlier, he wasn’t that renowned for swing, but he has shown his ability to swing with the new ball over the last series.

“It isn’t an easy task for any batsman to face the new ball. Siraj has started understanding his bowling and what the team wants from him. Overall he has become a very good bowler for the team, one who can take wickets with the new ball and in the middle overs. He has also improved his death bowling with the IPL”.

India squad: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan (wk), Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, KS Bharat (wk), Hardik Pandya (vice-captain), Rajat Patidar, Washington Sundar, Shahbaz Ahmed, Shardul Thakur, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Umran Malik.

Twitter shifts View Count tab to the right, users still angry

0

Twitter has announced to shift off the View Count tab to the right side of your timelines after several annoyed users complained about it.

“Many of you didn’t like seeing view counts on the left. We heard you,” said Twitter in a post.

“View counts will now show on the right side of your Tweet, located between the Like and Share icons. Live on the web, iOS and Android coming soon,” the company added.

The users still criticized Twitter for showing the View Count tab.

“We don’t want to see the view counts. That’s it. It doesn’t matter if it is on the left, on the right, up or down. I simply don’t want it,” posted one user.

Another posted: “It’s fine for us to see our own views like it was before, but now showing other people’s your views is just weird”.

Meanwhile, Twitter CEO Elon Musk on Wednesday announced that “Twitter Verified tweets are more likely to be recommended to others, as they are less likely to be bots or troll farms”.

He also said that companies in general are missing the incredible opportunity that Twitter provides to reach customers.

“Just Tweet interesting things! That’s all it takes,” he said. The billionaire has also announced that new navigation features will arrive on Twitter in the New Year, as he aims to rejig the whole experience to make the platform faster.

Ayodhya’s Deepotsav will be seen on UP’s R-Day tableau

0

Ayodhya’s now famous Deepotsav will be the theme of Uttar Pradesh’s tableau for the Republic Day parade in New Delhi on January 26 this year.

This is the second time in three years that Ayodhya will figure as the state’s theme at the parade.

A state government spokesman said: “Our Ayodhya tableau of 2021, which was centered around the upcoming Ram temple and tableau of 2022 that depicted the Kashi Vishwanath corridor, Varanasi, had evoked unprecedented response from many among the spectators when they stood up and bowed to the tableau.”

He said since the last two years, the Uttar Pradesh tableaus with an Ayodhya theme: 2021, and the Kashi corridor, 2022 had been winning first prize.

“Uttar Pradesh is the first state ever to have won from first to the third prize at the Delhi Republic Day parade,” this spokesman said.

“The grand and unique Deepotsav of Ayodhya is a sincere and pious effort to send the divine message of a harmonious society of Ram Rajya to the world and the humanity at large,” reads the description of the theme and design of the tableau.

“A large idol of sage Vashishtha, the family guru of Lord Ram, would be placed on the front portion of the tableau that will also feature a large replica of a lamp, symbolizing the end of ignorance and the spreading of the light of knowledge,” the spokesman said.

Sage Vashishtha is presented as the flagbearer of Indian culture and tradition of knowledge. In the middle of the tableau, the city of Ayodhya is seen decked up to welcome Lord Ram on his arrival on the occasion of Deepotsav. Lord Ram’s younger brother Bharat is seated with other relatives.

In the rear portion of the tableau, Lord Ram himself, along with Sita, brother Laxman, and his army will be seen reaching Ayodhya by Pushpak Viman. The atmosphere of joy and celebration that prevailed in Ayodhya during the return of Ram, Laxman, and Sita from their 14-year exile would also be depicted.

On both sides of the tableau, the Deepotsav that is being celebrated annually for the last six years at Ram ki Paidi, Saryu Ghat will be depicted.

Ayodhya Deepotsav 2022 set a new Guinness World Record for lighting over 15 lakh earthen lamps on the banks of the Saryu as Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the celebrations on Diwali eve.

ILT20: MI Emirates inflict six-wicket defeat on Sharjah Warriors with a strong all-round show

0

MI Emirates displayed their all-round strength and registered an emphatic six-wicket win over Sharjah Warriors in the sixth match of the DP World ILT20 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Tuesday night.

Deadly strikes by MI Emirates’ veteran and experienced bowlers Dwayne Bravo and Imran Tahir, who shared five wickets between them, restricted Sharjah Warriors to 146 for 7 in 20 overs.

Chasing the target, MI Emirates won in 17.1 overs with 17 balls to spare through another fine knock of 40 runs from UAE’s Muhammad Waseem and Nicholas Pooran’s breezy 39 runs. Sharjah Warriors thus crashed to their third successive defeat while MI Emirates moved to the top of the points table.

Sharjah Warriors’ opener Tom Kohler Cadmore’s fine knock of 55 off 41 balls with six boundaries and one six went in vain. Dwayne Bravo (3 for 25) and Imran Tahir (2 for 17) reduced Sharjah Warriors from a strong 87 for 1 to 119 for 7 within a span of seven overs. A cameo from Paul Walter (28 not out) took the score to 146 for 7 in 20 overs but it was yet another insipid batting show from Sharjah Warriors.

MI Emirates had won the toss and elected to bowl. Sharjah’s in-form opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz began well hitting opening bowler Trent Boult for two elegantly placed boundaries from the last two deliveries of the first over.

Gurbaz then executed a sweetly timed straight drive in Boult’s second over. He picked one more boundary off Boult’s fourth ball but fell to the fifth ball pulling straight to Andre Fletcher in the deep for 15.

Dawid Malan joined Kohler-Cadmore and took the score past the 50-run mark in 5.3 overs. Kohler-Cadmore smashed Fazalhaq Farooqi for four boundaries in the last over of the powerplay. All his shots were so well-executed that all the fielders could do was watch those shots race to the boundary. He also greeted Dwayne Bravo’s first delivery with a boundary over long-off.

Imran Tahir, who had bagged three wickets in his last match against the same team, was introduced in the eighth over and he gave away just five runs. Kohler Cadmore pulled UAE’s Zahoor Khan, who bowled the ninth over, for a six to mid-wicket. Bravo ended the 56 runs partnership for the second wicket by having Malan caught behind by wicketkeeper Nicholas Pooran for 14. Kohler Cadmore reached his half-century in 35 balls but the persistent Tahir had skipper Moeen Ali caught by Fletcher at long-on for 2.

Sharjah Warriors reached the 100-run mark in 13 overs but Tahir struck again with a beauty of a delivery to clean bowl Kohler-Cadmore for 55. In the 15th over, Bravo clean bowled Mohammad Nabi for 1 and Joe Denly for 4. UAE’s Zahoor Khan had his UAE teammate Alishan Sharafu caught by Kieron Pollard at long-on for 2. Essex allrounder Paul Walter hit an unbeaten 28 runs to take the score to 146 for 7 in 20 overs.

Needing to score at a run rate of only 7.30, MI Emirates’ openers England’s Will Smeed and UAE’s in-form batsman Waseem began confidently. Smeed, who had hit consecutive boundaries off Naveen Ul Haq and Junaid Siddiqui, fell for 29, brilliantly caught by Kohler-Cadmore at mid-wicket. Andre Fletcher joined Waseem but left-arm spinner Noor Ahmed bowled a tight seventh over giving away just three runs. MI Emirates reached the 50-run mark only in 7.1 overs.

Waseem swept Joe Denly for a boundary while Fletcher lifted him for a six. Unfortunately, Fletcher got run out for 15 in a mix-up with Waseem. Nicholas Pooran walked in and along with Waseem, they accelerated the run flow. Waseem smashed Walters to mid-wicket for a six and then elegantly cut him for a boundary to take the score past the 100-run mark in 13 overs. He swept Nabi into the hands of Malan for 40. His knock of 36 balls had four boundaries and a six.

Kieron Pollard walked in with his team needing 45 runs in 41 balls. He lifted Noor Ahmed straight out of the ground for a six and got out bowled by Junaid Siddiqui for 19. Fletcher hit two power-packed sixes off Naveen Ul Haq to quicken the victory and remained unbeaten on 39 off 21 balls with three sixes and a boundary.

Brief scores:

Sharjah Warriors 146/7 in 20 overs (Tom Kohler-Cadmore 55, Paul Walter 28n.o, Dwayne Bravo 3-25, Imran Tahir 2-17) lost to MI Emirates 147/4 in 17.1 overs (Will Smeed 29, Muhammad Waseem 40, Nicholas Pooran 39n.o, Junaid Siddiqui 2/24) by 6 wickets.

Japan’s used car registration hits record low in 2022

0

Used car registrations in Japan fell 6.3 percent in 2022 from the previous year to 3,495,305 units, the lowest level on record since 1978, the Japan Automobile Dealers Association (JADA) said.

Registrations have been on the decline for the third consecutive year, affected by production constraints, including an ongoing semiconductor shortage, as well as an 8.3-per cent fall in domestic new auto sales last year, according to the JADA data published on Tuesday.

Breaking down the vehicle type, registrations of used passenger cars were down 6.4 percent at 3,039,126 units, while second-hand freight vehicles decreased by 6.1 percent to 369,179 units, Xinhua news agency reported.

Prices for used automobiles have hiked amid a rise in demand since delivery times for new vehicles have been prolonged as the automotive parts crunch persists.

Mobile app helps adolescents access health services in B’desh

0

Millions of adolescents in Bangladesh will be able to access health information and services through two online portals launched at the National Adolescent Health Conference.

The Adolescent Health website and mobile application, launched by the Bangladeshi Ministry of Health and Family Welfare with support from the UN children’s fund UNICEF and the Embassy of Sweden in Dhaka, on Tuesday are aimed at increasing awareness and ensuring easy access to physical and mental health information and services for adolescents.

“Adolescents can be powerful agents of change, and we must do all we can to empower them and to address their age-specific needs. The launch of these platforms represents the government’s commitment to strengthen adolescent-friendly health services in Bangladesh,” said Bangladeshi Minister of Health and Family Welfare Zahid Maleque.

Adolescents in Bangladesh, accounting for more than 36 million of the country’s population, face multiple social barriers to accessing information and health services that are essential for them to grow and thrive, UNICEF said in a statement.

It said low awareness and social stigma about mental health and mental illness, for example, are widespread among communities. And when it comes to sexual and reproductive health, it is challenging for both girls and boys to seek and find trusted information and vital services, the statement added.

“Adolescents need access to information, skills, and services to enable them to reduce risk, but also to grow into capable adults that form a strong foundation for the next generation and the global future,” said Sheldon Yett, UNICEF representative to Bangladesh.

“The app gives them critical health information that they may be too shy to ask from parents, peers or health professionals.”

The Adolescent Health platforms include educational and gender-adapted guides and courses on sexual and reproductive health and rights, nutrition, violence, and physical and mental health, as well as information on how and where to access adolescent-friendly health services, Xinhua news agency reported.

To promote widespread use of the platform, the UNICEF said, Bangladesh’s Ministry of Women and Children Affairs and Ministry of Education will engage with adolescent clubs, youth peer groups, and teachers in all secondary schools in the country.

Reach out to people, hold gatherings at every district: PM Modi

On the concluding day of the two-day national executive meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday urged the party workers and leaders to strengthen the BJP by reaching out to people and holding gatherings in every district.

With as many as nine states going to the polls this year, the Prime Minister gave valuable tips to the representatives of those states who were present at the national executive meeting.

Addressing a press conference, Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, said, “The Prime Minister called upon the party workers to bring the marginalized and backward sections of the society into the mainstream.”

While delivering his speech, the Prime Minister said that India’s best time is approaching and the BJP workers should work hard to make the most of it, Fadnavis said.

Saying that there are only 400 days left for the general elections in 2024, the Prime Minister asked the party workers to tell people the difference between good governance and bad governance, to make the youth of the country aware, among others, Fadnavis informed.

The Prime Minister said that people should know how the BJP government ended the malpractices and corruption that were common during the tenures of previous governments.

The Prime Minister also said that he never considers the opposition as weak, but everyone should play their part.

Modi said that the BJP has now transformed into a social movement, and not just a political movement, as he asked the party leaders across the country to strengthen the BJP by reaching out to the people.

The Prime Minister also urged all BJP fronts to increase their activities in the border villages.

Golf: Amandeep, Vani, Seher and Pranavi lead star cast for Leg 2 of women’s tour

0

Seher Atwal will be looking to get another morale-boosting win as she tees up for the Rs.12 lakh second leg of the Hero Women’s Pro Golf Tour 2023 at the Bombay Presidency Golf Club here.

While Seher won the first event last week, some very strong names are lined up this week with Amandeep Drall and Vani Kapoor leading the way along with Pranavi Urs, winner of the 2022 Hero WPGT season, with five wins in 13 starts, also playing.

Seher, 24, has won at least once in each of the last three years, including the one that has just begun. Her consistency also saw her finish second on the Hero Order of Merit in 2022. She was fourth in 2020-21.

Seher, who won the opening leg last week, will soon head to Nairobi for her first Ladies European Tour (LET) event of 2023 at the Magical Kenya Ladies Open in the first week of February, where she will join Aditi Ashok, Diksha Dagar, Amandeep Drall and Vani Kapoor.

Amandeep and Vani are looking to get match-sharp ahead of the 2023 LET season. Amandeep and Vani had fair success in 2022 with the former coming within a whisker of a breakthrough win at the Hero Women’s Indian Open, where she was the runner-up. She was also seventh at the Swiss Ladies Open.

Vani was tied for third at the Big Green Egg Open in the Netherlands and tied for eighth at the Hero Women’s Indian Open.

Vani, an experienced player, won the Hero Order of Merit three years in a row from 2014 to 2016, while Amandeep was the topper in the combined 2020-21 season when Vani was second.

For Seher, this could be a big season as she ventures out of India for the first time to play on the Ladies European Tour. Most of her previous LET starts have been at her home event, the Hero Women’s Indian Open. After playing the event as an amateur a few times, she made the cut in both 2019 and 2022. With a limited status, a few good finishes would get her into more events and give her a good push.

Other players looking for good results early in the season would be Ridhima Dilawari and Sneha Singh.

Meditation alters gut microbes in Buddhist monks for better mental health

0

Gut microbes found in Buddhist monks have been linked to lower risks of anxiety, depression, and even cardiovascular disease, thus lowering the risk of mental ill-health as they grow older.

A study, published in the open-access journal General Psychiatry, found that regular deep meditation, practiced for several years, may help to regulate the gut microbiome and potentially lower the risks of physical and mental ill-health.

“Collectively, several bacteria enriched in the meditation group have been associated with the alleviation of mental illness, suggesting that meditation can influence certain bacteria that may have a role in mental health,” the researchers wrote.

These include Prevotella, Bacteroidetes, Megamonas, and Faecalibacterium species.

To reach this conclusion, the researchers analyzed the stool and blood samples of 37 Tibetan Buddhist monks from three temples and 19 secular residents in the neighboring areas.

None of the participants had used agents that can alter the volume and diversity of gut microbes, like antibiotics, probiotics, prebiotics, or antifungal drugs in the preceding 3 months.

Stool sample analysis revealed significant differences in the diversity and volume of microbes between the monks and their neighbors.

Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes species were dominant in both groups, as would be expected.

But Bacteroidetes were significantly enriched in the monks’ stool samples, which also contained abundant Prevotella and a high volume of Megamonas and Faecalibacterium.

Research shows that the gut microbiome can affect mood and behavior through the gut-brain axis.

Blood sample analysis showed that levels of agents associated with a heightened risk of cardiovascular disease, including total cholesterol and apolipoprotein B, were significantly lower in the monks than in their secular neighbors by their functional analysis with the gut microbes.

The researchers suggest that the role of meditation in helping to prevent or treat psychosomatic illness definitely merits further research.

“These results suggest that long-term deep meditation may have a beneficial effect on gut microbiota, enabling the body to maintain an optimal state of health,” they said.
