Bumrah doesn’t need to change his action, injuries are part and parcel of cricket: Bharat Arun

0

Former India bowling coach Bharat Arun feels that Jasprit Bumrah, who is currently recovering from his injury, doesn’t need to change his action, saying that injuries are part and parcel of the game and the premier pacer will certainly make a comeback to the side.

Before the 2022 T20 World Cup, Bumrah had suffered a back injury, which forced him to miss the mega event in Australia. After months of recovery, the pacer had cleared a match simulation test at the NCA in Bengaluru and was on his way back into the side after being named in the ODI squad for the Sri Lanka series.

However, he experienced discomfort while building up to higher workloads and was withdrawn from India’s ODI squad against Sri Lanka, also getting ruled out from the first two Tests against Australia.

Notably, medical experts and even the cricketers like Shoaib Akhtar and Michael Holding in the past have called for a change in Bumrah’s bowling action in order to remain injury free and prolong his international career. However, the former India bowling coach doesn’t think so.

“Bumrah is the number one bowler and has been very successful with his action, so why should he ever change that? Tell me about the one fast bowler who hasn’t got injured, injuries are part and parcel of the game,” Bharat Arun, who is part of the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders coaching set-up at ILT20, told IANS in an interview.

“Bumrah has done enough for Indian cricket and being injured is also part of his career and I am sure he will come out of it,” he added.

The 24-year-old pacer Shivam Mavi, who recently made his India debut in T20Is against Sri Lanka, was also part of the KKR franchise till IPL 2022, and Arun who has worked with him, sees a bright future for the young pacer.

“Mavi has good potential, and is very talented and I think it’s just about holding his nerve. He’s got all the qualities to be a good international bowler. It’s how he absorbs the pressure and how he comes out of it that will determine his success in the future,” he said.

The experienced coach is also very pleased and optimistic about the Indian fast bowling pool for the future.

“There are a lot of good fast bowlers. The IPL has also thrown many names like Mohsin Khan from LSG, and Mukesh Choudry from CSK was also exciting. Also, Arshdeep has done a great job and Umran Malik is there. So I think the fast bowling pool is looking pretty healthy for India and it’s great to have this kind of talent for the future,” Arun said.

Talking about the difference between coaching an international team and a league franchise, the 60-year-old mentioned that it’s both exciting and challenging. He also spoke about keeping a track of the fast bowlers in different teams.

“I’ve always been a part of a franchise coach before I was an Indian coach. So it is exciting, it has its own challenges and I’m happy about it,” Arun said.

“Yes, modern-day players play for different international teams, franchises, and leagues but we keep a tab on them. Of course, it can be an advantage or a disadvantage if you are not with them throughout. It’ll be great if we can spend more time but that’s the way the leagues have been held. So, whatever limited time you have, you tried to get the best out of them,” he said.

The coach feels ILT20 will provide a good opportunity for UAE fast bowlers to learn from the big names of the game.

“They are very eager to learn at a big tournament like ILT20. The first time I think they are on a big stage where they are rubbing shoulders with international stars to prove their mettle. And they’re very quick to learn and it’s quite exciting to be working with them,” he concluded.

India Open: Lakshya beats Prannoy; Chirag-Satwik pair advances

0

India’s top-ranked shuttler H.S. Prannoy suffered a first-round exit from the India Open Super750 badminton tournament after a straight-game loss at the hands of his compatriot and defending champion Lakshya Sen here on Tuesday.

Lakshya prevailed 21-14, 21-15 over Prannoy in a match that lasted for 45 minutes. This was the pair’s seventh meeting in BWF tournaments and Lakshya took the lead 4-3 in the head-to-head record.

Defending men’s doubles champion pair Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy began their title defense with an easy 21-13, 21-15 opening-round win over Scotland’s Christopher Grimley and Mathew Grimley in just 41 minutes.

The India duo will next face either the Chinese combination Liu Yu Chen/Ou Xuan Yi, whom they beat in a thrilling comeback last week, or the English pair of Ben Lane/Sean Vendy, whom they trounced in the 2022 Commonwealth Games final last year.

In the women’s doubles, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand also made a winning start to the campaign as the duo defeated Margot Lambert and Anne Tran 22-20, 17-21, 21-18.

In the second round, the promising India women’s duo will face a stiff challenge in the form of sixth-seed Chinese pair Zhang Shu Xian and Zheng Yu.

Earlier, Former World No. 1 Kento Momota had a difficult start to the year as he lost to Denmark’s Rasmus Gemke 21-15 21-11. He had missed the season opener, Malaysia Open, due to a bout of influenza.

Momota’s loss to Gemke made this his seventh first-round loss in 10 tournaments. He did show some glimpses of his golden touch, eliciting applause from the sparse crowd, but overall he struggled with all aspects of his game. Gemke regularly found the winners past the despairing Momota.

“I found it difficult to control the shuttle,” said Momota. “I’ve recovered from influenza; physically I felt all right. I just need to work harder for the rest of the year.”

In the women’s singles, Rio Olympic champion Carolina Marin, who had an injury setback last year, outplayed Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara 21-13, 21-18.

Marin will be up against the most successful player at the India Open with three titles, Ratchanok Intanon, who trounced her Malaysian counterpart Goh Jin Wei 21-13, in the Round of 16.

The Bulgarian duo of Gabriela Stoeva and Stefani Stoeva too registered an easy 21-16, 21-10 win over their English opponents Cloe Birch and Lauren Smith in the women’s doubles opening round match.

The Stoeva sisters await the winner of the match between Jongkolphan Kititharakul & Rawinda Prajongjai of Thailand and Debora Jilli and Cheryl Seinen of France, in the second round.

In another women’s doubles match, India’s N. Sikki Reddy and Shruti Mishra lost to Germany’s Linda Efler and Isabel Lohau.

Covid-19 during pregnancy increases serious health risks: Study

0

Pregnant women with Covid-19 infection face seven times increased risk of dying and a significantly elevated risk of being admitted to an intensive care unit or suffering from pneumonia, a new study has shown.

According to the study published in BMJ Global Health, Covid-19 during pregnancy also increases the risk that the baby will need to be admitted to intensive care.

“This study provides the most comprehensive evidence to date suggesting that Covid-19 is a threat during pregnancy,” said Emily R. Smith, lead author of the study, and an assistant professor of global health at the US-based George Washington University.

“Our findings underscore the importance of Covid-19 vaccination for all women of childbearing age,” she added.

Moreover, the researchers found that compared to uninfected pregnant women, pregnant women with Covid-19 infection had more than three times the risk of being admitted to an intensive care unit.

People with Covid-19 who need ICU care are also more likely to die.

Covid-19 can impair breathing ability, and in severe cases, patients require mechanical ventilation to survive, the study showed.

There is also an about 23 times higher risk of developing pneumonia, a potentially life-threatening complication of Covid-19, and an over 5 times higher risk of thromboembolic disease (blood clots) that can cause pain, swelling, and other life-threatening issues in Covid-19 infection.

Smith points out that, despite the very serious health risks, more than 80 countries still do not recommend that all pregnant and lactating women receive the Covid vaccine.

Nadda to continue as BJP President till June 2024

BJP President J.P. Nadda’s tenure, set to end this month, had been extended till June 2024 in view of the upcoming Assembly elections this year and the Lok Sabha elections next year.

Informing about the decision taken in the BJP National Executive meeting, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh proposed to extend the presidential term of Nadda till June 2024, which was approved.

Citing the BJP’s victory in elections and organizational expansion under the leadership of JP Nadda, Shah said that BJP is the biggest democratic party. He further said that due to the pandemic, the membership drive could not be held, and nor could the organizational elections, and due to this, it was decided to extend Nadda’s tenure.

Shah claimed that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the chairmanship of Nadda, the 2024 Lok Sabha elections would see the BJP win even bigger than in 2019.

Actress Urvashi Dholakia, of “Kasautii Zindagii Kay” fame, will be seen playing an intriguing character of a powerful businesswoman who sexually exploits her employee in the ‘Me Too’ episode of the web series “Avaidh”.

The series comprises eight different short stories based on a common theme of illicit relationships. Urvashi is seen as Ketki, who sexually exploits her employee, Vicky. Under the influence of his colleague, Vicky takes an extreme step.

Aus Open: Andy Murray holds off Matteo Berrettini in five-set thriller

0

Two-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray edged 13th seed Matteo Berrettini of Italy in an instant classic decided by a fifth-set tie-break 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-7(7), 7-6(10-5) to advance to the second round of the Australian Open on Tuesday.

The win was Murray’s first Top-20 victory at a Grand Slam in more than four years, which required four hours and 49 minutes to secure the statement result in Rod Laver Arena.

He will next face either another Italian Fabio Fognini or the home favorite Thanasi Kokkinakis.

Moreover, the five-time runner-up in Melbourne became the fifth man in the Open Era to reach the 50-wins mark at the season’s first major. Murray is through to the Australian Open second round for the second consecutive year and 12th time overall. He is a five-time finalist at the event, with all five of those runs coming from 2010-16.

Berrettini had not lost in the first round of a major since the 2019 Australian Open. Prior to this fortnight, he had reached the quarterfinals or better in each of his past five Grand Slam appearances, including a run to the Wimbledon final in 2021.

Murray took the opening two sets and he blunted the Italian’s powerful forehand by combining slice with power in the third set. With neither man able to break serve after Berrettini made his lone breakthrough to lead 3-2 in the third set, the result hinged on late drama in the final two sets.

Italian combined his power with just enough defending and patience in the crucial moments to win the fourth set. Murray came tantalizingly close to match point twice in the fourth-set tie-break, only to be thwarted by moments of Berrettini brilliance. A desperate one-handed pass from the Italian drew an error from a diving Murray at 6/6, before Berrettini handled a vicious Murray pass attempt and forced another miss two points later.

The Briton left nothing to chance in the fifth set, racing out to a 5/0 lead in the tie-break before clinching victory.

Meanwhile, Google added a new feature to its Clock application on Pixel devices with which users can now record their own alarm and timer sounds.

Earlier, users had to copy the files over using a file manager application and then add them using the alarm sound settings, reports The Verge.

However, now, users don’t need to do all of that work because the tech giant has added a new option to record sounds right inside the Clock application.

The new feature appears to be limited to Pixel devices right now because it uses the Pixel-exclusive Recorder application, the report said.

India Open: Momota oust in opener; Carolina Marin prevails in women’s singles

0

Former world no 1 Kento Momota had a disappointing start to the 2023 season as the Japanese shuttler lost in the first round of the India Open Super 750 here on Tuesday.

Two-time former world champion lost 15-21, 11-21 to Denmark’s Rasmus Gemke, whom he had beaten in five of six past meetings.

Momota, who captured a record 11 titles in 2019, had a forgettable campaign last year as he lost in the first round of a tournament five times, and in the second round twice and didn’t win a single trophy last season.

Coming off a victory at last month’s Japanese national championships, Momota missed the season opener Malaysia Open Super 1000 last week, due to flu.

In women’s singles, Rio Olympic champion Carolina Marin outplayed Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara 21-13, 21-18. The Spaniard had an injury setback and is on the trail to finding her best form.

Marin will be up against former world champion from Thailand Ratchanok Intanon, who trounced her Malaysian counterpart Goh Jin Wei 21-13, in the round-of-16.

The Bulgarian duo of Gabriela Stoeva and Stefani Stoeva too registered an easy 21-16, 21-10 win over their English opponents Cloe Birch & and Lauren Smith in the women’s doubles opening round match.

The Stoeva sisters await the match winner between Jongkolphan Kititharakul & Rawinda Prajongjai of Thailand and Debora Jilli & Cheryl Seinen of France, in the second round.

Later in the day, India’s top men shuttler HS Prannoy and defending champion Lakshya Sen will cross swords to set up a second-round clash with Gemke.

Apple set to enter bidding war for English Premier League streaming rights

0

Tech giant Apple is preparing a bid for the rights to stream the English Premier League in the UK, the media reported.

According to The Daily Mail, the Premier League’s current three-year agreement with the UK-based Sky Sports and BT Sport expires in 2025, with the bidding process for the next set of rights set to begin later this year.

The report further mentioned that many American-owned clubs, such as Chelsea under Todd Boehly, believe the current rights are undervalued at $6.23 billion over three years and are looking to the US technology companies to increase the price.

The tech giant is looking to expand its sports coverage, building on a decade-long deal it recently secured to exclusively stream Major League Soccer (MLS) on Apple TV beginning next month, according to the report.

In November 2022, Apple and Major League Soccer announced plans to launch a streaming service on February 1, 2023.

The ‘MLS Season Pass’ streaming service will feature “live MLS regular-season matches, entire playoffs, and the Leagues Cup, all with no blackouts”, Apple said in a blog post.

The service will make MLS more accessible to a global audience in a more streamlined manner.

Starting from February 1, users can subscribe to the service on the Apple TV application for $14.99 per month or $99 per season.

India has shown growth and resilience amid global headwinds: PM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday that India has shown growth and resilience amid global headwinds, as he urged the public and private sectors to seize opportunities arising as a result of the emerging global environment and to think out of the box.

Modi said this during his interaction with economists prior to the forthcoming Union Budget to be presented on February 1.

Recognizing that the underlying global headwinds are likely to continue, strategic recommendations were also made by the economists for further strengthening India’s economic resilience, sources aware of the developments said.

Modi noted that while there are risks, the emerging global environment offers new and diverse opportunities in areas such as digitization, energy, healthcare, and agriculture, among others.

To seize these opportunities, public and private sectors need to leverage synergies and think out of the box, he emphasized during the meeting, official sources said.

Participants at the meeting offered practical measures on ways in which India could prudently sustain its development momentum.

Ideas and suggestions were shared with the Prime Minister on diverse topics, ranging from agriculture to manufacturing.

Sources said that Modi applauded the success of the India Digital story and the rapid adoption of fintech across the country as well as the potential for inclusive growth and development it promises.

The Prime Minister underscored Nari Shakti as a key driver of India’s growth and urged her to continue making efforts to further enable and boost women’s participation in the workforce.

In the ongoing International Year of Millets, Modi highlighted the need to promote millets in view of their potential to transform the rural and agricultural sectors, with their attributes such as being carbon neutral, conducive to natural farming, and an affordable source of nutrition.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Minister of State for Planning Rao Inderjit Singh, Niti Aayog Vice Chairman Suman Bery, Principal Secretary to PM P.K. Mishra, Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba and Chief Economic Advisor V. Anantha Nageswaran were present at the meeting, along with Niti Aayog members and CEO Parameswaran Iyer.
