Tesla cuts EV prices in US, Europe amid poor sales, stalled growth

0

Elon Musk-owned Tesla has drastically lowered prices of EVs across its lineup in the US and Europe, in an effort to boost sales as its stock plummeted more than 60 percent.

The least expensive EV, the Model 3 RWD, has dropped from $46,990 to $43,990, reports Engadget.

Moreover, the 5-seat Model Y Long Range’s price decreased 20 percent from $65,990 to $52,990.

As a result, the latter model is now eligible for the $7,500 US Federal Tax Credit, resulting in a final price reduction of $20,500 which is more than 30 percent.

Price reductions were made to other models too, including the performance versions of the Model 3 and Model Y, and the regular and plaid versions of the Model S and Model X.

However, the Model Y’s 7-seat option has increased in price by $1,000 to $4,000.

In Germany, Model 3 and Model Y prices were decreased by one to 17 percent and also dropped in Austria, Switzerland, and France.

Customers must place their orders before mid-March when it is expected that the rebate would be reduced to half, in order to receive the full $7,500.

SUVs priced below $80,000 and cars priced under $55,000 are eligible for tax rebates, the report said.

Meanwhile, A the electric car maker has missed its target of 50 percent growth in production and deliveries for 2022, as its stock plummeted around 65 percent amid Musk’s $44 billion Twitter takeover last year.

The automaker needed to sell 495,760 vehicles in its fourth quarter (Q4) to have achieved the 50 percent growth guidance.

In the fourth quarter, Tesla produced over 439,000 vehicles and delivered over 405,000 vehicles.

Investors fear that China’s Covid situation and supply chain-related challenges will further impact Tesla sales. They are also concerned about Musk’s distraction from his Twitter overhaul.

The Tesla CEO recently became the first person ever to lose $200 billion from his net worth.

Tesla last month announced a price drop on several of its models, offering a $7,500 discount for its Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, in a bid to sell more vehicles.

Youth commits suicide while on video call with girlfriend in W.Bengal

0

Feeling betrayed, a 23-year-old youth hanged himself to death during a video call with his girlfriend in West Bengal’s Nadia district.

Sujal Saha took the extreme step at his ancestral residence in Shantinagar Colony on Thursday evening when he was alone at home, District police sources said.

As his family members went to a relative’s residence nearby, the victim locked himself in his room and made a video call to his girlfriend. During the course of the conversation, he reportedly hanged himself from the ceiling fan while keeping the video calling on.

Local police have confiscated his mobile phone for further investigation.

Sujal’s family members said that the victim was in a relationship with a local girl and both were about to get married.

However, the tiff between the two started recently when Sujal spotted his girlfriend going with another youth.

Sujal had also seen the Facebook status of her girlfriend who had uploaded her picture with that youth there. Feeling betrayed, Sujal thought that her girlfriend was trying to sever the relationship.

The victim’s family members have filed a complaint against the girl at Santipur Police Station accusing her of abetting Sujal’s suicide.

His body has been sent for post-mortem to Ranaghat Sub-divisional Hospital.

La Liga: Three things to look for in Spain’s Matchday 17

0

FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are absent from La Liga match this weekend as they compete in the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia. Nevertheless, there is still plenty of action as Spain’s top flight moves onto its 17th round of matches.

Here are some things to look out for in the coming days:

1. A big Basque derby

This season’s first Basque derby between Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao sees the two sides challenging for a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League, with Real Sociedad also looking like the only team able to get near Barca and Madrid in the race for the league’s title.

Imanol Alguacil’s team goes into the match in excellent form, with six wins in all competitions, and the connection between Brais Mendez and Alexander Sorloth in attack working to perfection.

The return of Mikel Oyarzabal also gives further options to Imanol in the attack.

Athletic have played well in both of their matches since the FIFA World Cup, but have been let down by the lack of a finishing touch. However, a defense led by Daniel Vivian and Yeray Alvarez is incredibly hard to break down, while the Williams brothers, Inaki and Nico, have the pace to cause problems for any defense in La Liga.

Add to that a packed stadium and a big game atmosphere, and this match is just as tense as anything Madrid or Barca can offer.

2. Big absences for Atletico Madrid

The big news for Atletico this week was the loan deal for Joao Felix to join Chelsea until the end of the season, with the 23-year-old signing a contract extension before his departure. The new contract is slightly misleading as it redistributes his earnings over a longer period to help the club deal with financial fair-play regulations and so doesn’t necessarily mean Atletico is desperate to keep him.

Felix’s departure could help ease tensions as his relationship with coach Diego Simeone wasn’t good, but it does leave Simeone lacking options ahead of his side’s visit to play Almeria.

Antoine Griezmann has been excellent since the World Cup, but Simeone only has Alvaro Morata and Angel Correa in support. With Atletico still involved in the Copa del Rey, any injuries would stretch his attack very thinly indeed.

Almeria will be their first test without both Felix and suspended defender Stefan Savic, reports Xinhua.

3. Big weekend in a relegation battle

This is a good weekend to focus on the battle to avoid relegation, where several sides are within a cluster of points.

Third-from-bottom Cadiz will hope to beat Elche, who are rock bottom with just four points, to climb out of the bottom three and confirm their improvement in recent matches.

Espanyol is obliged to get something from their visit to Getafe, who are too close to the bottom three for comfort. Espanyol has just two wins all season and relies too heavily on striker Joselu.

Sevilla, who got out of the bottom three last weekend, travel to Girona needing to build on their victory at home to Getafe.

It’s a weekend that could see some changes in the relegation zone, and perhaps in some dugouts.

K’taka HC takes suo motu cognizance of metro pillar collapse case

0

The Karnataka High Court on Friday took suo moto cognizance of the under-construction metro pillar collapse here, which claimed the lives of a woman and her two-year-old son on January 11.

The division bench headed by Chief Justice P.B. Varale and Justice Ashok S. Kinagi mentioned the reports of the main newspapers. The bench further stated that the incidents, which took place on January 11 and 13, have made the court consider the incidents as cognizable.

The bench said that the plight of roads in the city has raised concerns. The bench further questioned the safety measure taken up while carrying out such work and whether the security measures are mentioned in the tender document and contract.

“If these are not mentioned, whether it has been directed through the government order or notification?” the division bench questioned.

“If the safety parameters are mentioned, how is compliance being monitored at the sites where work is taken up? Is accountability fixed on the company which has taken the contract? The matter regarding the officers who monitor the project being implemented and the contract company’s compliance should be considered seriously,” the bench said.

The court directed the Registrar General of the court to register a case in this regard. The concerned departments of the government of Karnataka, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Bengaluru Metro Rail Transport Corporation (BMRCL), and concerned contractors have been made parties to the case.

On January 11, Tejaswini and her 2-year-old son died after an under-construction metro pillar fell on their scooty. Her husband and other son had a miraculous escape.

The FIR had been registered against the Nagarjuna Construction Company and officers of BMRCL. On January 13, a bike rider got injured seriously after falling into a pothole on Brigade Road.

ILT20: Virat is definitely the one, he is somebody else as a player, says Sharjah Warriors captain Moeen Ali

0

Sharjah Warriors skipper Moeen Ali has picked Virat Kohli as his favorite Indian cricketer and said the former India captain is one with whom he would like to spend time.

Speaking exclusively on Zee Network ahead of the MI Emirates v Sharjah Warriors match in DP World ILT20, Moeen Ali said, “I really admire Virat Kohli. He is definitely the one, he is somebody else as a player. He is the one you want to play with, spend time with him. He is very unique, I’ve not met anybody else like him in terms of his personality. Cricket-wise there are so many great players, but as a person, I really love Virat’s company. MS Dhoni is very inspiring.”

Moeen Ali, the England white-ball specialist, also explained why Indian fans should support Sharjah Warriors in the DP World ILT20, “We are the underdogs like I said, there are no superstars in our team but we have the fight and we can show that spirit and Indian fans will enjoy watching us play and see the underdogs win!”

Meanwhile, MI Emirates captain Kieron Pollard said the first match is crucial for all teams and whoever will hit the ground running, will win the first game.

Speaking exclusively on Zee Network ahead of the first clash of DP World ILT20 against Sharjah Warriors, Moeen Ali said, “As a team, you want to try to integrate as quickly as possible. Whoever hits the ground running first, tends to get through that first game.

“For us, it’s the cohesion and cooperation with each other and we feel sometimes a bit difficult but sometimes because guys are anxious to start the tournament especially when you haven’t been in the nets you want to get going. It can work in your favor, it can work against you. But again, it is what it is, you have to play to get one win, you will start some momentum, and then you lose, you start again,” said Pollard.

Malaysia Open: Prannoy loses to Kodai Naraoka, bows out in quarterfinals

0

India’s No. 1 shuttler H.S. Prannoy on Friday bowed out of the Malaysia Open Super 1000 badminton tournament after suffering a quarterfinal loss at the hands of Kodai Naraoka of Japan.

Playing on court 2, World No. 8 Prannoy lost 16-21, 21-19, 10-21 to Naraoka here at the Axiata Arena. The unseeded Japanese will square off with No. 8 seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand for a spot in the last four.

Naraoka started the proceedings on a high note and took an early advantage with five back-to-back points. The Indian badminton player got his way back into the game and leveled it at 7-7. The Japanese shuttler maintained a slender lead throughout the game and in the end, comfortably pocketed the first game.

The second game witnessed an intense contest between both the players but it was the Indian who eventually emerged as the victor of the battle and took the match into a decider. Naraoka completely dominated the final game and hardly gave Prannoy a chance to claw his way back in and finally wrapped up the match in 84 minutes of play.

Heading into the match, the Japanese shuttler was leading 2-0 in the head-to-head stats against Parnnoy, having won both their meetings last year – Singapore Open and then at the World Tour Finals.

Later in the day, world championships bronze medallists men’s pair Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, ranked fifth in the world, will take on the Chinese pair of Liu Yu Chen and Ou Xuan Yi in the men’s doubles quarterfinals.

Future Google TV to get self-charging, battery-free remote

0

TW Electronics, the UK-based company behind the reference remote used on most Android TV and Google TV devices in recent years, has introduced a new design of the remote that includes a photovoltaic panel at the bottom that allows for self-charging of the battery.

“Excited to announce the launch of a self-charging, battery-free #remotecontrol powered by indoor light. Developed with #Exeger, the device is #GoogleTV ready and easily integrated into your existing system,” TW Electronics tweeted.

According to 9to5Google, the panel used in the remote uses light sources to convert that energy into electricity that can charge the battery within the device.

In recent years, self-charging remotes from brands like Samsung have been introduced, and Amazon is expected to be working on incorporating the technology into its next Fire TV remote.

However, it is unclear when this self-charging remote might actually launch with a Google TV product, said the report.

Last year, the tech giant started rolling out ‘personalized profiles’ for its users on Google TV.

The new Google TV profiles let users enjoy their own personalized space with their Google Account.

“As you watch TV, your profile takes into account your interests and preferences to help you discover more of what’s out there for you. And for the little ones, you can always set up a kids profile to help them access a fun collection of movies and shows under your guidance,” the company said in a blog post.

Microsoft brings new features on Teams Rooms

0

Microsoft has announced that it has improved its Teams Rooms on Android with new touch-enabled features including the ability to walk up and use Microsoft Whiteboard, Chat bubbles, and more.

Users can leverage all of the new features by updating to Microsoft Teams Rooms on Android update 3, the tech giant said in a statement.

A Microsoft Whiteboard session can be launched with just one touch, allowing for instant collaboration.

“With Microsoft Teams Rooms on Android displays, whiteboard sessions can be started from a supported displays home screen at any time, including outside of a formal meeting,” the company said. With Chat bubbles, Teams Rooms on Android can now display chats sent during a Teams meeting on the front-of-room display.

Chat messages are displayed as chat bubbles over the current view, which allows in-room participants to engage with the conversation happening in the chat.

With the Touch awareness feature, touch screens allow users to “control the room system from both the touch display at the front of the room as well as the touch console, making it convenient to operate a Teams Room using whichever device is closest to reach”.

Moreover, a 4K display is now supported to further enhance the meeting experience on large-screen devices.

The tech giant has also redesigned the share menu because of which content sharing in a meeting is now more accessible. Also, users can now “bring Microsoft Whiteboard into an ad hoc meeting”.

Users can seamlessly switch from a local collaboration experience to an online co-creation space by tapping “Start meeting” on the local Whiteboard screen.

“‘Start meeting’ quickly kicks off an ad hoc meeting and automatically presents the Whiteboard already started on the home screen onto the meeting stage,” the company said.

Odia-Hindi film ‘Daman’ to release on Feb 3, Ajay Devgn launches trailer

Bollywood star Ajay Devgn on Friday released the trailer of the Hindi version of Odia film Daman, a social drama, based on a true incident on Odisha’s malaria elimination drive.

On February 3, Panorama Studios and JP Motion Pictures will release the movie in Hindi in theatres across India.

“Jab badhega ek kadam badlaav ki taraf, tab banegi nayi misaal. Presenting the official Hindi trailer of #Daman In cinemas on 3rd Feb 2023,” Devgn tweeted.

Written and directed by Vishal Mourya and Debi Prasad Lenka, the film opened in Odisha last year, on November 4, was declared tax-free, and is still running successfully.

Daman is based on a true incident and traces the journey of Dr. Siddharth Mohanty, played by Odia actor Babushaan Mohanty, who has just completed his MBBS from Bhubaneswar, and is posted in a remote tribal area in the state’s Malkangiri district.

How he spearheads a drive to eradicate malaria in the 151 villages in Janbai PHC in the tribal-dominated Malkangiri district in spite of many hurdles, forms a moving tale of the film.

“Our film is a true-life story appreciated not only by the common man, but also Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who believes it will inspire doctors and government officials in remote areas across the country to work selflessly and give an impetus to many such initiatives. Now Ajay sir supporting this small film with a big heart is really a sweet gesture,” said Vishal Mourya.

An acronym for Durgama Anchalare Malaria Nirakarana (Malaria Control in Inaccessible Areas), the drive has produced impressive results in 8,000 villages of 79 blocks of eight highly malaria-endemic southern Odisha districts in a short span.

The World Health Organisation’s 2018 World Malaria Report lauded India for being the only country among the 11 highest-burden countries to have shown substantial progress in reducing the disease burden. In 2015, at the East Asia Summit, India pledged to eliminate malaria by 2030.

“It is important to support inspirational stories like Daman to help support a national cause. Covid-19 had reiterated the age-old maxim ‘health is wealth’, and we should all do our bit to make our country disease free. Films like these are the need of the hour,” asserts Kumar Mangat Pathak, chairman, Panorama Studios, who has produced the film with Deependra Samal of JP Motion Pictures.

Produced by Kumar Mangat Pathak, Abhishek Pathak and Deependra Samal; co-produced by Murlidhar Chhatwani and Pinkis Pradhan, Daman also stars Dipanwit Das Mohapatra and many actors from the tribal community who have acted in a film for the first time.

Adelaide International 2: Badosa withdraws from semifinal due to thigh injury

0

The No.9 seed tennis player from Spain, Paula Badosa withdrew from her Adelaide International 2 semifinal match against No.5 seed Daria Kasatkina of Russia due to a right thigh injury, the tournament organizers said on Friday.

As a result of Badosa’s withdrawal, Kasatkina moves into Saturday’s final via walkover.

Spanish No.1 Badosa engaged in a grueling quarterfinal match against Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia that stretched beyond two-and-a-half hours with a 74-minute first set followed by an even longer 81-minute second set.

The Spaniard, however, is still looking ahead to playing at the year’s first Grand Slam, the 2023 Australian Open, which begins on Monday in Melbourne.

“I’m really disappointed that I had to withdraw today because I was really looking forward to the match,” WTA quoted Badosa as saying. “Yesterday when I was playing against (Beatriz Haddad Maia), it was a very tough match, especially physical, so I felt a little bit in my abductor. I felt like I pulled it a little bit.

“Today I feel a little bit worse, so yeah, I have the Australian Open ahead, and I hope I can recover for that.

“Mentally, I was feeling very well, as well. I played three really good matches. I think that helps me, as well, with my confidence for the tournaments ahead. Now it’s something that I cannot control, so it is what it is.”

In Saturday’s final, Kasatkina will play the winner of the match between Swiss player Belinda Bencic and Veronika Kudermetova of Russia.
