Indonesia has already begun its preparation for hosting the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit, which will take place in the country’s eastern province of East Nusa Tenggara in May, with the theme of “ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth”.
As Southeast Asia’s largest economy, Indonesia has taken over the chairmanship of the regional bloc for 2023 from Cambodia, where the ASEAN Summit was held last November, reports Xinhua news agency.
However, the country formally commenced its ASEAN chairmanship on the first day of this year.
The last time Indonesia chaired ASEAN was in 2011.
Other ASEAN members had high expectations for Indonesia’s chairmanship since the archipelagic country managed to host the world’s influential Group of 20 Summit last year amid global challenges, such as the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war that have led to an enduring global food and energy crisis.
After completing the G20 presidency on the island of Bali, one of the world’s best tourist destinations, in October 2022, Indonesia has chosen its other tourist destination of Labuan Bajo in East Nusa Tenggara province as the location for the ASEAN summit.
Labuan Bajo, the gateway to the popular Komodo National Park, is one of the “10 New Bali” choices, government-designated priority destinations spanning across the archipelago.
The destinations include Lake Toba in North Sumatra, Borobudur in Central Java, Bromo Tengger Semeru in East Java, Mandalika in West Nusa Tenggara, and Morotai in North Maluku.
In the past years, President Joko Widodo repeatedly said developments in Labuan Bajo must be accelerated as the tourism destination will host international events in the years to come.
Last week, Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi was in Labuan Bajo for a three-day-visit, as a part of her tour to inspect its readiness to host the bloc’s biannual summit. She reportedly visited some facilities, such as hotels, convention centers, and tourist spots that will be used.
ASEAN currently groups Indonesia, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. At the ASEAN Summit in Cambodia last year, the leaders of the group agreed “in principle” to admit Timor-Leste as their 11th member.
Minister Marsudi said on Wednesday that Indonesia, as the ASEAN chair this year, is aiming to make the bloc strong and become a barometer of cooperation that can contribute to peace, stability, and prosperity in the region and the world.
With the theme of “ASEAN Matters”, she explained, Indonesia is determined to make the group remain important and relevant to the people both within and outside ASEAN.
Marsudi emphasized that Indonesia also encourages the bloc to start preparing for ASEAN 2045 by strengthening the region’s centrality in a bid to maintain stability and peace in Southeast Asia and beyond.

UP Police tweet on ‘Naatu Naatu’ goes viral
The Uttar Pradesh Police’s congratulatory message to team ‘RRR’ for winning the Golden Globe award for the song ‘Naatu Naatu’ has gone viral.
The message also reminds people of the “golden global rules of road safety”.
In its creative post on Twitter, the UP Police defined RRR as — ‘Respect the Red light on the Road’.
Giving a creative twist to the RRR poster, the UP Police also used the Golden Globe winner song ‘Naatu Naatu’ in its caption that read — “The nominations for Golden Glob(al) rules of #RoadSafety; #Naatu, Kabhi red light skip Kare; #Naatu, Kabhi tripling Kare; #Naatu, Kabhi drunken driving kare; #Naatu, Kabhi traffic rules tode”.
The tweet garnered over 40,000 views.
This is not the first time that the UP Police has earned accolades for its creative tweets.
Last year, in a post inspired by Akshay Kumar’s Bachchhan Paandey, the UP Police tweeted, “Bhai Ho Ya Godfather, Bhaukaal aur Bhay Sirf Kanoon Ka Chalega #ArmslengthfromCrime.”
The tweet, aimed at raising the issue of illegal firearms, was retweeted and lauded by Akshay Kumar himself.
Rahul Srivastav, additional SP in charge of the social media center said, “UP Police have always kept pace with the latest trends in cinema, sports, etc., and we have always lauded our star achievers in all walks of life. Giving a quirky twist to popular movies and songs for the issues of public concern helps us to capture the imagination of people more effectively.”

Apple working on AR shopping feature on iPhone: Report
Tech giant Apple is reportedly working on a new version of its Apple Store application that will offer an augmented reality (AR) shopping feature on iPhone.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, this feature is likely to allow customers to point their iPhone towards a product like a Mac in an Apple Store and immediately receive its details like pricing and specifications in an overlay on their screen, reports MacRumors.
Gurman said the iPhone maker has been working on this feature since at least 2020 and has been testing it at stores in recent months. However, it is still unclear when the company will roll out this feature.
“If the service debuts in the near future, it would be one of Apple’s most significant AR-related launches to date — and a taste of what’s to come with the headset,” wrote Gurman.
He also said that the tech giant is planning to release an application programming interface (API) for developers so that other retail stores could also use this feature, in the report said.
Meanwhile, earlier this week, it was reported that the company was working on a new in-house chip that is likely to power cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth functionality on its devices.
The iPhone maker was also working on a replacement for the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip that it currently uses from Broadcom and was planning to start integrating it into devices in 2025.
Finnish MPs can decide on NATO membership by simple majority: Committee
The Constitutional Law Committee of Finland’s Parliament ruled that lawmakers can make the final decision on whether the Nordic nation joins the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) based on a simple majority.
However, the committee did not take a stand on when the vote should take place, reports Xinhua news agency.
There has been debate in Finland on whether Parliament could complete the legislative process while ratification in Hungary and Turkey is still underway.
Committee chair Johanna Ojala-Niemela said at a press conference on Thursday that “there is no obstacle to either course of action. If Parliament wishes, it can table the question before Hungary and Turkey ratify”.
Speaker of Parliament Matti Vanhanen and Foreign Affairs Committee chair Jussi Halla-who has proposed that the matter should be left for the next Parliament to decide if the two countries have not taken their decisions prior to that time.
President Sauli Niinisto has also said that Parliament can decide either way.
Commenting on the committee’s decision not to require a two-thirds majority, Ojala-Niemela said that “this transfer of powers to NATO is not significant enough to require a two-thirds majority”.
According to the committee, Finland would continue to maintain its legislative, judicial, and budgetary powers even after joining the alliance.
The required majorities for passing the NATO laws have no practical political importance, noted local analysts.
In May 2022, the country’s Parliament endorsed the decision to apply for NATO membership with a majority.
CLOSE-IN: Indian cricketers are now on a fitness chart but sportsman’s body is not a measuring tool
One was glad to read that the Board of control for Cricket in India (BCCI) took the initiative to discuss and chart out a map for the future of Indian cricket. To have all the thought leaders presently involved in the functioning of cricket in India, in one forum, to air their individual views is a wonderful idea. India has three goals in cricket to focus on for the immediate future. One is to qualify for the cricket Test World Championship final in June 2023, the ODI Cricket World Cup to be played at home in October 2023 and the T20 World Cup in June 2024.
One of the major concerns discussed, it seems, was the fitness of the cricketers. The frequent breaking down of players due to injuries has caused a major disruption in the progress of the Indian cricket side. Once again, like several times in the past, the need has arisen as to how to get an Indian cricket team as a fit unit for a big occasion.
The Yo-Yo Test was introduced by the Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri combo, which, over time, gradually faded into oblivion. However, it has once again come back as a mandatory requirement, solely because of the losses that India has faced in the ICC-staged tournaments.
Injuries are part and parcel of playing a sport. To identify it as the major concern of a cricket side and its failure in the present scenario is quite ridiculous. The main area of concern is not fitness, as India has plenty of players as replacements but to improve their mental state of mind to handle the major tournaments. The weight of expectation is what drives them to become mild and fragile.
India has several very good players, most of them are proven entities, who definitely do not lack cricketing skills. The players have proved how capable they are against sides in a bilateral series. However, they seem to disintegrate on the world stage. This is precisely why they require the players to go through serious confidential sessions with a mental as well as a performance coach.
Most cricketers today look fit like never seen before. They need to be, to play the limited-overs version of the game. The shorter pristine cricket grounds and the thickly wooded bats have made the game much faster. It is not the amount of cricket that is being played but the agility and quick movements that are required to counter the faster pace of the game, that is causing a cricketer’s body to give way. The live coverage of International matches has made a cricketer always want to show his best, as every movement is scrutinized to the nth degree.
India, rather than acknowledging the real reason for their failure, which is mental pressure, has found a good excuse for players’ injuries as the cause of their cricket team’s failure.
One gathers that a new fitness requirement has been added and the dreaded word is “Dexa”. This is a scan taken of the full body of a person to measure one’s body fat percentage, lean muscle mass, water content, and bone density. This scan, one gathers, is normally done to identify an individual’s condition as regards osteoporosis.
A cricketer playing at the highest level of the game, one presumes, has bone density and other such criteria well in place. To reach such heights, a cricketer would have performed well domestically in far worse conditions.
One does understand that fitness is an important part, however, in cricket, one’s skill, technique, and mental fitness play a much bigger role in one’s performance.
One wonders whether the likes of Rishabh Pant, Sarfraz Khan, Kuldeep Yadav, or even Ravichandran Ashwin would meet the stringent requirements of body fat and lean muscle mass. One has to go beyond thinking that one is not recruiting a candidate for a country’s defense forces but one for a game of cricket.
In the past, in the mid-’60s, a training camp was held at the National Defense Academy (NDA) at Khadakwasla in Pune. This was organized to get the Indian cricket team fit. The program did not amuse many of the Indian cricket team stalwarts and so was shelved conveniently.
It was in 1977 that BCCI held a fitness camp in Chennai to get the top 36 Indian players physically fit under a NIS, Patiala coach by the name of Tandon. I happened to be a part of it and we were put through a fitness regime that none of us had encountered before.
The irony of it was that players who could bowl over after over in a match and bat for hours and hours were completely unfit to handle a physical training session. A few succumbed to injuries during the camp and had to be sent home. Their cricketing skills and stamina while playing the sport was exemplary, however, the flexibility and suppleness of a gymnast were naturally missing.
One can see the same trend emerging amongst the present players as well. The extra emphasis at the Gym rather than bowling, batting, and fielding on the ground is making a present cricketer look physically beautiful. However, a bit more exertion or an additional demand while playing is leading to an injury.
A sportsman’s body is not a measuring tool. One goes beyond pain and exhaustion to do well. Sunil Gavaskar did it with a toothache in the West Indies in 1971 to draw a Test match. Kapil Dev bowled his heart out to get a win for India in Australia in 1981/82. Sachin Tendulkar too had injuries galore and still playing past the pain, for his country. None of them would have been qualified fit if they had to go through a Dexa scan.
The basic issue is for the Indian team to believe in themselves. They are one of the best sides in the world. They now need to play not as one of the best but as the very best. That’s when they will become winners.

2nd ODI: KL Rahul’s unbeaten 64 carries India to hard-fought four-wicket win over Sri Lanka
Wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul stepped up when it mattered the most to pull India out of a tricky stage by slamming his 12th ODI fifty and carry them to a hard-fought four-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the second ODI at Eden Gardens, here on Thursday.
After Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj picked three wickets each to bundle out Sri Lanka for 215, the visitors’ bowlers reduced India to 86/4. But Rahul kept his calm and batted sensibly under pressure to make an unbeaten 64 off 103 balls, and struck a crucial 75-run partnership with Hardik Pandya to take India over the line with 40 balls to spare, giving the hosts’ a series win.
Chasing 216, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill smacked six boundaries in the first four overs. But Rohit fell in the fifth over to Chamika Karunaratne, giving a regulation catch to the keeper while looking to punch it through covers without any footwork.
Gill smacked Lahiru Kumara for back-to-back fours in the next over. But the pacer had the last laugh as Gill picked out short midwicket through a short-arm pull. Kumara inflicted more damage by getting a length ball to come in sharply and Virat Kohli, stuck in the crease, got an inside edge to the stumps, as India’s top three fell in power-play.
Shreyas Iyer pulled with conviction twice off Karunaratne for a brace of fours and had some luck by getting boundaries off leading edges. His stay ended when he played the wrong line off Kumara and was trapped lbw. He took a review, but replays showed the ball clipping leg-stump.
Rahul joined forces with Hardik to get India’s chase back on track. The duo took their time to settle down in order and weather the early storm. After India’s 100 was achieved, the duo began to punish loose deliveries from the Sri Lankan bowlers.
When Rajitha bowled too full and sprayed down the leg, Hardik was quick in driving through mid-off and flicking through backward square leg for boundaries. When Hasaranga overpitched, Rahul leaned forward to drive through cover for four. In the next over, Kumara overpitched and Rahul took full advantage by lofting high over mid-off for another four.
As the ball started to lose its shine and the pitch began to be less spicy, India was cruising. Hardik brought out a front-foot drive against Dhananjaya de Silva, the sixth bowling option, and then flicked off Karunaratne for another four. But in an attempt to drive again off Karunaratne, Hardik was stuck at crease and nicked behind to keeper.
Axar Patel began well with an uppish drive through a vacant extra cover gap off Karunaratne for a boundary which was called no-ball. He made full use of the free hit by fiercely pulling over deep mid-wicket and putting the pressure back on Sri Lanka.
His attempt to take the aerial route again backfired when his lofted extra drive was caught by long-off against de Silva. After Rahul got his fifty in 93 balls on a no-ball, Kuldeep Yadav took India closer to victory with a fierce cut through backward point for a boundary.
Rahul applied to finish touches to the chase with flicks and inside edges fetching him boundaries off Rajitha, followed by a top-edge on pull flying over the keeper’s head to make it three fours in an over. Kuldeep finished off the chase with a four slapped through mid-off to give India a series win.
Brief Scores: Sri Lanka 215 all out in 39.4 overs (Nuwanidu Fernando 50, Kusal Mendis 34, Mohammed Siraj 3/30, Kuldeep Yadav 3/51) lost to India 219/6 in 43.2 overs (KL Rahul 64 not out, Hardik Pandya 36; Chamika Karunaratne 2/51, Lahiru Kumara 2/64) by four wickets
‘Shehzada’ trailer is a capsule of action, entertainment, drama & comedy
Fresh off the success of his OTT release ‘Freddy’, Bollywood star Kartik Aaryan now has another film to offer; a masala action entertainer which will bow in theatres titled ‘Shehzada’.
The trailer of the film was unveiled on Thursday and shows Kartik in the avatar of a quintessential masala film hero, who beats up baddies, does slapstick comedy, and does over-the-top action sequences.
The trailer, which is roughly 3 minutes in length, starts off with money shots of Kartik in action, kicking, running around, and beating goons to a pulp. It then introduces Kriti Sanon as it builds the chemistry between the two leads.
It then talks about Kartik being the actual heir of a wealthy family, who are unaware of his existence. All this while, Kartik, who is a lawyer in the film, has been raised by Paresh Rawal’s character.
Soon Kartik’s character realizes that Paresh’s character is not his actual father and what follows later forms the crux of the film. The trailer doesn’t keep anything under the shadows and gives away pretty much everything from the film’s plot.
While Kartik can be seen trying his hands at the Govinda-style comedy in the film, the trailer features generous amounts of action, entertainment, drama, and comedy.
The film has music by Pritam and Sonu Nigam makes a pleasant appearance in the trailer through his voice.
The film also stars Rajpal Yadav, Manisha Koirala, Sunny Hinduja, and Ronit Roy.
‘Shehzada’ has been directed by Rohit Dhawan, who is the brother of Bollywood star Varun Dhawan and the son of veteran director David Dhawan. The film is set to release in cinemas on February 10.
Hockey World Cup: Onus on India to capitalise on familiar conditions against Spain in opener
As they sit down to give the finishing touches to their strategy for Friday’s encounter with Spain on the opening day of the FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup 2023 at the Birsa Munda Stadium here, the Indian team will be thinking of their Pro League matches against the same opponents in Bhubaneswar in October-November 2022.
India had lost the first game in the two-game series 2-3 at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar and could only win the second match in a shootout after the teams were tied 2-2 at the end of the regulation 60 minutes.
Those two matches played around 67 days back, must have given Graham Reid and his boys an insight into how tough the World Cup opener against the Red Sticks is going to be. Spain is ranked 8th in the FIH Rankings, just two spots below India, and have come up strongly as a team recently after nearly a decade because a generation of players retired from the game.
Friday’s encounter is thus very crucial for both teams as winning it will give them a chance to establish an early lead in the Group of Death in which England and Wales are the other opponents.
The Spanish players are known for their flair, skills, and attacking prowess. They are one of the most talented and unpredictable teams out there and could prove a big stumbling block for India if the hosts are not at their best on Friday. The Red Sticks have in their ranks electrifying attacker Enrique Gonzalez, experienced midfielder Marc Miralles, classy captain Alvaro Iglesias, Pau Cunill (Rising Star nominee — FIH Hockey Stars Awards 2021-22), and former Argentina international and 2016 Olympic gold medallist Joaquin Menini.
The hosts on the other hand will bank on their settled squad which has drag-flicker and captain Harmanpreet Singh, a two-time FIH Player of the Year award winner, experienced goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, seasoned midfielder and former captain Manpreet Singh and forwards Akashdeep Singh and Mandeep Singh. Backed by a strong midfield comprising Manpreet Singh, Vivek Sagar Prasad along with youngsters Raj Kumar Pal, Hardik Singh, and Shamsher Singh, the Indian squad is well-balanced and capable of matching the top teams in the world.
However, the team is inconsistent and tends to lose focus and their defensive shape under pressure. Conceding late goals is also an issue that has plagued the Indians for a long time. The team, however, has done well in recent times, ending a four-decade medal drought at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, and is hoping to end a 47-year-old wait for a medal at the World Cup.
Against this backdrop and playing a strong opponent, India, winners in the 1975 World Cup — would bank on two variables that look definitely in their favor — the support of the huge crowd, that is expected to fill the newly-constructed 20,000-seater Birsa Munda Stadium to the rafters on Monday evening, and also their familiarity and better acclimatization with the weather conditions.
The crowd will be a huge factor in favor of the hosts and the Spaniards are well aware of that.
“We know the stadium in Rourkela is bigger. We know there will be a lot more crowd there. It will be hard to listen to our teammates and the instructions from the referee as well. But it will be an incredibly exciting atmosphere and we are really looking forward to playing here,” said Spain skipper Alvaro Iglesias in the pre-match press conference.
India captain Harmanpreet Singh, too, is conscious of this factor and knows that his team will be thriving on the fanatic support it gets in Odisha.
“There is anticipation and excitement in equal measure. As the team bus entered Rourkela city and drove closer to the hockey facility, there were thousands of fans who thronged the streets with Tricolour flags and cheered for us as they welcomed us into their hometown. We were simply speechless by the gesture, and it was then that we actually got a sense of how much hockey means to the people of this region,” Harmanpreet said.
The Indian captain is also aware of the excitement among the fans and the pressure that it brings but has experienced playing with such crowds during the 2018 World Cup in Bhubaneswar, the Olympic qualifiers in 2019, and the number of Pro League matches they have played in Odisha and therefore confident that his team will thrive in these conditions.
Spain’s coach Max Caldas and his India counterpart Graham Reid are aware of each other’s tactics and coaching philosophy having coached the Netherlands together — the Argentine Caldas as head coach and Australian Reid as his assistant. Both have represented their respective countries as players and have vast experience in coaching national teams.
With their teams facing off on Friday, it will also be an opportunity for both coaches to surprise each other.
If the two teams manage to bring out their best, it could be a magical night in Rourkela on Friday. And if India wins the match, it will be the perfect start for Graham Reid’s team in its quest for their first World Cup medal at home.

He revealed that he has such a strong team that he has a problem of plenty with many good players in the squad. “We have to look at the balance of our team. Rovman Powell, the skipper of the Dubai Capitals, wants everyone to use the opportunity to improve, especially the UAE players. “This is the start of something special. Not from a personal standpoint but from the team and franchise standpoint. This is a good chance for the UAE players to showcase their talent. The DP World ILT20 is a good launching pad for them and hopefully, they’ll utilize this opportunity.”
James Vince, the skipper of the Gulf Giants has giant hopes about his team’s chances but accepts that all other teams are strong too. “We are excited to see the tournament get underway. Every team has good talent and I’m looking forward to seeing the teams play against each other. Most of my players travel from tournament to tournament and they know what to do in the coming days. It is important that they play their roles well.”
Dwyane Bravo, the senior most player who represented MI Emirates in the press conference said that the event will be very competitive. “This is a short tournament, but it’s going to be a competitive one.” Bravo also revealed that it would be a learning experience for youngsters. “It’s important for me to pass on whatever knowledge that I have about the game to my teammates and also develop the next generation of cricketers.”
Meanwhile, Moeen Ali, skipper of the Sharjah Warriors, like brave warriors, emphatically said, “We’ll look to play some good cricket and we are here to win. We want to do well particularly in Sharjah since it’s our home ground. We’ll look to enjoy the cricket and also be competitive at the same time.”

Regina Cassandra plays a mighty cop in ‘Jaanbaaz Hindustan Ke’
The trailer of the streaming series ‘Jaanbaaz Hindustan Ke’ was unveiled on Thursday. It stars Sumeet Vyas, Regina Cassandra, Barun Sobti, Chandan Roy, Mita Vashisht, Deepika Amin, and Sandeep Dhabale.
As seen in the trailer, the thriller series narrates the tale of a courageous IPS officer Kavya Iyer (played by Regina) who battles against the militants and re-establishes the faith of the common man in law. Inspired by true events, the show sheds light on the complexities officers must bear in order to fulfill their duties for the country.
The 8-part series has been helmed by national award-winning director Srijit Mukherji and blends realism with compelling storytelling.
Commenting on the occasion of the trailer release, Sumeet Vyas said: “‘Jaanbaaz Hindustan Ke’ is a tale that speaks volumes about women IPS officers who have been relentlessly serving our country. My respect for them has just increased after this show. Their commitment is unmatched.”
He added: “My character has a shade of grey so getting the nuances right was very important to me. I enjoyed preparing and making that switch from a sweet innocent man to Tauriq in ‘Jaanbaaz Hindustan Ke’. The show will immerse the audience in a world of suspense, deceit, and exhilaration. I am hoping that it will lead to societal evolution and encourage gender neutrality for officers in uniform.”
Regina Cassandra said: “Getting under the skin of Kavya was an enriching experience. From emoting the character of a tough IPS officer and getting the body language correct to play a mother and daughter was demanding but exciting. Kavya is a strong-headed individual who manages to navigate through difficult situations and finds her way which really inspired me.”
She further mentioned: “While our society continues to grapple with gender discrimination, a series like Jaanbaaz Hindustan Ke draws parallels and showcases what women are capable of. Kavya’s determination, empowering spirit, and humanitarian side underline the true essence of a hero. She is the epitome of a warrior. Despite being a mother, a wife, and a daughter, an IPS officer will go beyond her call for duty and serve her nation.”
Produced by Juggernaut Productions, the show will be available to stream on ZEE5 from January 26, 2023, in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.
Anushka Sharma files plea against Sales Tax Dept, HC seeks Maha govt response
Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma on Thursday challenged in the Bombay High Court the orders of the Maharashtra State Tax Department hiking levies on the payments she has received for endorsements and hosting award functions.
When the matter came up before a division bench of Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice Abhay Ahuja, government pleader Jyoti Chavan sought time to file a reply.
Accordingly, the court has directed the state government to file its response in two of the pleas which were taken up and posted the matter for further hearing in February. 6.
Anushka has questioned the orders of the Deputy Commissioner, Sales Tax raising her dues for the assessment years 2012-2013, 2013-2014, 2014-2015, and 2015-2016, under the Maharashtra Value Added Tax Act.
She has contended that the assessing officer had wrongly levied the ST and said that for 2012-2013, the ST was Rs 1.20 crore on her income of Rs 12.30 crore, and for 2013-2014, the ST was Rs 1.60 crore on around Rs 17 crore payments received by her.
In her plea, Sharma said that the assessing officer had erroneously held that she had acquired copyright through endorsements and anchoring function and had sold or transferred the same.
The actress, through her lawyer Deepak Bapat, has pointed out that the copyright of videos is always retained by the producer who also owns such videos and the performer’s rights which are not capable of being transferred or sold.
Bapat said in the petition that as per the MVAT Sec. 6(1), there shall be levied sales tax on the turnover of sales of goods, and unless it is established that there is a sale of goods, sales tax cannot be levied on it.
Retail inflation falls to 1-year low of 5.72% in Dec, factory output rises to 7% in Nov
Retail inflation for December 2022 fell to a year’s low of 5.72 percent, mainly due to low food prices, especially those of fruits and vegetables. This is the second consecutive month when it has remained within the RBI’s tolerance band of 2 percent to 6 percent.
The consumer price index (CPI) based inflation was at 5.88 percent in November 2022, according to data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on Thursday. In October 2022, it was at a higher band of 6.77 percent.
Food inflation stood at 4.19 percent in December 2022, lesser than the 4.67 percent level of November 2022, as per the official data.
Apart from fruits and vegetables, prices of oils and fats as well as meat and fish also fell in December 2022 compared to November 2022.
Meanwhile, factory output, which is measured in terms of the index of industrial production (IIP), rose 7.1 percent in November 2022 as against 4 percent in October 2022, government data showed.

Google hits back in US search antitrust lawsuit, says doesn’t block rivals
Google has hit back at a US government anti-trust lawsuit over its search engine, saying its search deals — including agreements with Mozilla and Apple — don’t prevent users from trying other search platforms.
The US Department of Justice and a coalition of state attorneys general sued Google in 2020 under the Donald Trump administration.
The complaint alleged that Google used its “incumbent power” and its Android operating system to lock up the search market, denying competitors “vital distribution, scale, and product recognition”.
Google said in its filing that “no evidence suggests that Google coerced Apple, Mozilla, or any other browser developer into adopting a design that includes a single default search engine”.
The tech giant also argued that its contracts with Android phone makers don’t constitute exclusive deals.
The lawsuit against Google contended that the company harmed competition by entering revenue share agreements with web browser developers that provide that Google will be the pre-set default general search engine on their browsers.
“Plaintiffs also contend that Google has harmed competition through three sets of agreements with companies that manufacture and/or sell Android devices,” said the Google filing.
Android is a mobile operating system, licensed open source, in which Google has invested billions of dollars since its release in the fall of 2008.
Google said although ITS agreements with browser developers are individually negotiated and differ in some respects, they have three important commonalities.
“First, the agreements have never prevented companies such as Apple and Mozilla from promoting other search engines in their browsers, and those companies have in fact agreed to promote Bing, DuckDuckGo, and other search services,” argued the company.
Second, Apple and Mozilla, not Google, designed their browsers to each include an integrated search box with a default search engine upon first use, and they continue to believe that design enables the best user experience.
“Third, Apple and Mozilla decided to set Google as the default search engine in their browsers because they believe it provides the highest quality experience for their customers,” said Google.
In September last year, a US court allowed a larger antitrust case against Google to proceed that alleged that the tech giant monopolized the ad-tech market and suppressed competition by its access to data.
The Attorneys General of 10 US states brought an action in Texas against Google, alleging that Google’s digital advertising practices violate the laws of their states.
The judge, however, dismissed claims of collusion between Google and Facebook (now Meta) in the “Jedi Blue” program, a deal in which Google and Facebook allegedly joined hands for ad auctions.
