Football: Australia to host Cup of Nations ahead of FIFA Women’s World Cup

0

Australia’s onational women’s football team will play home games against Spain, the Czech Republic, and Jamaica ahead of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Football Australia (FA) announced on Thursday that the Matildas will participate in the Cup of Nations, a four-team tournament comprising three match days in February’s international window.

Games will be played at Central Coast Stadium on February 16, Parramatta Stadium on February 19, and McDonald Jones Stadium on Feb 22, with the Matildas to play the Czech Republic, Spain, and Jamaica in order.

For the Matildas, the match against seventh-ranked Spain will offer a chance to make amends for a 7-0 defeat last June.

Tony Gustavsson, head coach of the Matildas, said playing matches at home is crucial ahead of the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand from July 20 to August 20, reports news agency Xinhua.

“The teams have been carefully selected for the Cup of Nations to ensure we have the right preparation heading into the FIFA Women’s World Cup,” he said in a media release.

“Not only are all three nations filled with quality, but they also provide a difference in playing style and approach with the three-match days aiming to mirror tournament group plays to the best of our ability.”

The Matildas are on a four-game winning streak, including a 4-0 win against third-ranked Sweden last November.

They will compete in Group B at the World Cup alongside Ireland, Nigeria, and Canada.

Meta Quest users can now track heart rate

0

Meta has introduced a new heart rate tracking feature and Health Connect by Android integration on Meta Quest so that users can keep track of all their fitness statistics.

“One of the most-requested fitness features for Meta Quest has been heart rate tracking so that you can easily see tangible and real-time results,” the company said in a blog post on Wednesday.

With the new heart rate feature, users will be able to see their heart rate, when measured by a Bluetooth-enabled heart rate monitor, even while they are in a virtual reality (VR) workout.

When users pair a heart rate monitor to their headset, they will have access to better information about how their VR workouts are raising their heart rate.

“Heart rate monitors that can work with Meta Quest are the Garmin HRM-Dual and the Polar H10. Other heart rate monitors that use Bluetooth for pairing may also be pairable with your Meta Quest,” the company said.

Moreover, users can now sync their statistics to the Meta Quest mobile application, and those with Android devices can link and share information directly to Health Connect by Android

With the new update, users can keep track of all their virtual reality (VR) workouts and compile all their statistics in one place.

Meta announced a similar integration with Apple Health in June last year.

Moreover, for a limited time, users will get the Elite Strap at no additional cost if they purchase a Meta Quest 2, which will help them to balance and support the headset, the company said.

‘Naato Naato’, Telugu pride and its first flag-bearer, the original NTR

It was history repeating itself, this time neither as farce, nor as tragedy, when Andhra politicians invoked Telugu pride while celebrating the ‘RRR’ song ‘Naatu Naatu’ getting the Golden Globe for Best Original Score.

It was the grandfather of NTR Jr, Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, the Telugu superstar of his time and the original NTR, who became the first non-Congress chief minister of Andhra Pradesh in 1983, riding on the powerful slogan of Telugu Vari Atma Gauravam (or Telugu people’s self-respect). He was the supreme leader of the Telugu Desam Party, which is now helmed by his son-in-law, Chandrababu Naidu.

The ‘Naato Naato’ win was a booster dose for this ‘self-respect’, which NTR (the original) kept drumming home during his historic Chaitanya Ratham marathon mass contact movement across the state, which saw him covering 75,000 km on his remodeled Chevrolet van.

And guess who accompanied him throughout this crisscrossing of the then-unified Andhra Pradesh? It was NTR Jr’s father, Nandamuri Harikrishna, an actor who started his career playing the baby Lord Krishna in NTR’s 1967 mythological classic drama, ‘Krishnavataram’. Harikrishna eventually got elected as an MLA, became a minister under NTR, and also served as Rajya Sabha MP. He died in a car crash in 2018.

NTR Jr is Harikrishna’s son from his second wife, Shalini, a Kannadiga from Kundapur in the Udupi district of Karnataka.

The other star who shared screen space with NTR Jr, Ram Charan, also comes with a family history that, like everything else in Tollywood, is intertwined with that of the NTR clan. Although Ram Charan’s father, Telugu ‘Mega Star’ Chiranjeevi, has been a steadfast Congressman (he became India’s Tourism Minister under the stewardship of Manmohan Singh), he had great respect for NTR.

On May 28, 2020, on the occasion of NTR’s 97th birth anniversary, Chiranjeevi tweeted a throwback picture of him with the late former chief minister and Telugu icon with a message in Telugu, which when translated read: “The manliness of the Telugu race, the self-respect of the Telugu people. A memory that will never fade in the heart of the Telugu soil. The glory of Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao is ajaramaram (death-defying).”

Chiranjeevi acted in the NTR film ‘Tirugu Leni Manishi’ in 1981. And it may seem pre-ordained that his son, Ram Charan, would be seen in action together with NTR’s grandson in a movie that has established a new milestone in Telugu cinema. And Pawan Kalyan, Chiranjeevi’s younger brother and founder of the Jana Sena Party, is in the news for warming up politically to Chandrababu Naidu and the Telugu Desam Party.

Of course, Chiranjeevi has had nasty political spats with NTR’s sixth son, the superstar and popular talk show host Nandamuri Balakrishna (better known as NBK), who also is the TDP MLA representing Hindupur, which had voted for NTR three times in succession since 1985, before sending NTR Jr’s father, Harikrishna, to the Assembly in 1996.

Hindupur has remained very much a TDP pocket borough since 1985, despite Andhra Pradesh moving back to the Congress under YSR (Y.S. Rajsekhara Reddy) and then into the hands of his son and present Chief Minister, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.

NBK and Chiranjeevi have publicly kissed and made up, but the megastar doesn’t see eye to eye with the actor-producer-YSRCP leader and former Rajya Sabha MP Mohan Babu.

Their differences overshadowed the 2021 elections to Tollywood’s powerful trade body, Movie Artists Association (MAA), when Chiranjeevi put his weight behind Prakash Raj for president against Vishnu Manchu, Mohan Babu’s son, who eventually won the bitterly fought race.

Talking about the intertwined world of Tollywood, it was Mohan Babu who produced NTR’s last movie, the 1993 blockbuster ‘Major Chandrakanth’.

Finally, one more NTR connection begs to find a mention. The late TDP leader and the chief minister were very keen on starring in the biopic of Alluri Sitarama Raju, the freedom fighter after whom Ram Charan’s character in ‘RRR’ is modeled, but the role in the 1974 film went to another Telugu superstar, Krishna, who passed away on November 15, 2022.

NTR was said to be quite upset about it, but Krishna, whose sons Ramesh and Mahesh Babu are carrying on his legacy, was a formidable actor, although his dalliance with politics, as a Congressman under Rajiv Gandhi, was cut short by the ascendancy of the TDP.

Australian Open: Nadal handed tough draw; to open against Scott Draper; Djokovic, Kyrgios in same quarter

0

Spain’s World No. 2 Rafael Nadal, the most successful men’s singles player in tennis with 22 Grand Slam titles, was on Thursday handed a tough draw at the year’s first Grand Slam with an opening round encounter with Britain’s in-from Scott Draper at Melbourne Park.

The 2021-winner Novak Djokovic, who is close on Nadal’s heels with 21 Grand Slam titles, and Australia’s Nick Kyrgios are in the same quarter of the draw in the bottom half and are scheduled to meet in the quarterfinals.

Defending champion Nadal will need to be sharp from his first match against Draper, a 2022 Next Gen ATP Finals competitor. The 21-year-old, who owns two Top 10 wins, has made a quick start to his season. The World No. 40 will compete in the Adelaide International 2 semi-finals on Friday.

Nadal, on the other hand, has struggled in the United Cup, losing to Cameron Norrie, Draper’s compatriot, as Spain failed to advance in the United Cup.

If Nadal navigates past the British star, his path will not get much easier, with one of two Americans – Mackenzie McDonald or Brandon Nakashima – waiting in the second round.

Also in the Spaniard’s quarter is seventh seed Daniil Medvedev, which means a rematch of the 2022 Australian Open final between them could be played in the last eight. Sixteenth seed Frances Tiafoe, who upset Nadal at last year’s U.S. Open, is a potential fourth-round opponent for the lefty.

In the bottom half of the draw, nine-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic and Australian Nick Kyrgios landed in the same quarter. The 19th-seeded Kyrgios could play ninth seed Holger Rune in the third round and fifth seed Andrey Rublev in the fourth round before a quarter-final clash against Djokovic, who begins his pursuit of a record-tying 22nd major title against Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena.

Rublev’s first-round clash will be a blockbuster against his close friend, former World No. 3 and 2020 Australian Open finalist Dominic Thiem. Thirteenth seed Matteo Berrettini will open against former World No. 1 Andy Murray.

NASA’s Webb telescope spots its first Earth-like exoplanet

0

Researchers have confirmed an exoplanet, a planet that orbits another star, using NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope for the first time.

Formally classified as LHS 475 b, the planet is almost exactly the same size as our own, clocking in at 99 percent of Earth’s diameter. LHS 475 b is relatively close, at only 41 light-years away, in the constellation Octans.

“These first observational results from an Earth-size, rocky planet open the door to many future possibilities for studying rocky planet atmospheres with Webb,” said Mark Clampin, Astrophysics Division director at NASA Headquarters in Washington, DC.

“Webb is bringing us closer and closer to a new understanding of Earth-like worlds outside our solar system, and the mission is only just getting started,” he said in a statement late on Wednesday.

The research team was led by Kevin Stevenson and Jacob Lustig-Yaeger, both from the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland.

Among all operating telescopes, only Webb is capable of characterizing the atmospheres of Earth-sized exoplanets.

Although the team can’t conclude what is present, they can definitely say what is not present.

“There are some terrestrial-type atmospheres that we can rule out,” said Lustig-Yaeger. “It can’t have a thick methane-dominated atmosphere, similar to that of Saturn’s moon Titan. a

Webb also revealed that the planet is a few hundred degrees warmer than Earth.

If clouds are detected, it may lead the researchers to conclude that the planet is more like Venus, which has a carbon dioxide atmosphere and is perpetually shrouded in thick clouds.

“We’re at the forefront of studying small, rocky exoplanets,” Lustig-Yaeger said.

Twitter planning to sell inactive usernames via online auctions

Twitter will soon start selling usernames via online actions that have remained inactive in order to boost its revenues.

According to The New York Times, engineers at the company are planning to organize online auctions where people can bid for usernames or Twitter handles.

It is still unclear how much Twitter will charge for selling inactive usernames.

“The company has discussed selling some user names through online auctions, people with knowledge of the plans said,” according to the report.

In December, Musk said in a tweet that Twitter would soon start freeing up 1.5 billion usernames.

“Twitter will soon start freeing the namespace of 1.5 billion accounts,” posted Musk.

He said that these are “obvious account deletions with no tweets and no log-in for years”.

After acquiring Twitter for $44 billion, Musk posted that he was interested in freeing up accounts with desired usernames.

Since Musk’s takeover, the billionaire has been aiming to boost the company’s revenue, including charging money for its $8 Blue subscription service with verification.

Several advertisers have left the micro-blogging platform, as the company reduces internal revenue projections.

Musk also said that the micro-blogging platform is working on a process to inform the users whether their tweets have been suppressed under a process known as “shadow banning” and they can appeal against the ban.

Tennis: World No. 1 Alcaraz to begin 2023 season at Argentina Open

0

World number one tennis player Carlos Alcaraz of Spain will get his 2023 season underway in Buenos Aires at the Argentina Open, starting from February 11, tournament organizers said on Twitter.

“The ATP number one ranked player will play in Argentina. The 19-year-old Spaniard will take part in our tournament for the first time,” Argentina Open organizers tweeted on Wednesday.

Alcaraz was forced to withdraw from the 2023 Australian Open last week after contracting a muscle in his right leg during training.

“I wanted to let you guys know that I will be playing in the Argentina Open. I’m honestly super excited to travel to Argentina and play there, so I hope to see everyone there. I’ll see you soon,” the U.S. Open champion said in a video message posted on social media.

After his withdrawal from the season’s first Grand slam, Alcaraz could lose his world No. 1 ranking depending on results at the Australian Open, with the likes of Novak Djokovic, Casper Ruud, and Stefanos Tsitsipas in the frame.

The 19-year-old became the youngest world number one since the creation of the ATP rankings in 1973 by winning his first Grand Slam tournament at the U.S. Open last September.

Moreover, he then became the youngest player in history to finish the year at the top of the rankings, and the first outside of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Andy Murray to do so since Andy Roddick in 2003.

He will join Italian Lorenzo Musetti, Austrian Dominic Thiem, Briton Cameron Norrie, and local favorite Diego Schwartzman in Argentina Open next month.

Prem Rakshith’s hook step, Zelensky’s palace and ‘Naatu Naatu’

After bagging the Golden Globe award, ‘Naatu Naatu’ has become the latest craze but few people know about the hard work which has gone behind the song from Rajamouli’s historical epic drama, ‘RRR’.

It was not mere lyrics, music, singing, and action which made the song a big hit. Collective efforts by the entire team of artists led by director S.S. Rajamouli delivered something which won international acclaim and went on to win the Golden Globe award for the best original song.

Rajamouli, the filmmaker known for perfection, was satisfied with the song after as many as 18 takes.

The combination of music director M.M. Keeravani’s melodious music, the lyrics of Chandrabose, the voice of Rahul Sipligunj and Kala Bhairava, and choreography by Prem Rakshith produced a superb song that became the icing on the cake.

They all put in their best as Rajamouli wanted to film a mass song on Junior NTR and Ram Charan. He was keen that this song should be something different from others.

Prem Rakshith ensured that the hook step takes the song to another high. His team recorded 80 variations of hook steps. It finalized the best variation which went on to prove a huge hit.

To make sure that the steps by the two actors sync well, there were as many as 18 takes during the filming of the song. This was despite the fact that both Junior NTR and Ram Charan are known as the best dancers in Tollywood.

Film analysts say that this shows the level of perfection Rajamouli wanted to see in this key component of his production. Junior NTR had revealed during the promotion of the movie how the director kept on going for retakes as he felt that their efforts were not yielding the result he wanted to see.

Rajamouli shared another interesting aspect of the filming of this song during an interview. ‘Naatu Naatu’ was shot outside the Ukraine President’s palace. This was before the beginning of the war in that country.

According to the director, the building seen in the song is the Presidential palace and the Parliament building is located adjacent to it. Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky immediately accepted the request of the film unit for shooting the song in front of the palace.

Before becoming his country’s president, Zelensky was a television actor. He is said to have played the role of President in a television series.

‘RRR’ was released across the globe in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam simultaneously early this year. The film received a huge response in several countries, including the US and Japan.

Set in the 1920’s, ‘RRR’ is a fictitious story based on two real-life revolutionaries who fought the British Raj — Alluri Seetharamaraju and Komaram Bheem, played by Ram Charan and Junior NTR, respectively.

It became the third highest-grossing Indian film of all time, garnering about Rs 1,300 crore worldwide, and received international recognition.

US researchers eye developing mucosal vaccines for respiratory viruses

0

US researchers are exploring the challenges and outlining approaches to develop mucosal vaccines for respiratory viruses, according to a statement from the US National Institute of Health (NIH).

Vaccines that provide long-lasting protection against influenza, coronaviruses, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) have proved exceptionally difficult to develop, said the NIH on Wednesday.

Flu, RSV, SARS-CoV-2, and “common cold” coronaviruses share several characteristics that enable them to cause repeated re-infections, including very short incubation periods, rapid host-to-host transmission and replication in the nasal mucosa rather than throughout the body, Xinhua news agency reported.

The next generation of improved vaccines for mucosa-replicating viruses will require advances in understanding on several fronts, according to NIH researchers. More must be learned about interactions between flu viruses, coronaviruses, and RSV and the components of the immune response that operate largely or exclusively in the upper respiratory system.

Over time, these interactions have evolved and led to “immune tolerance,” wherein the human host tolerates transient, limited infections by viruses that are generally non-lethal to avoid the destructive consequences of an all-out immune system attack, according to the researchers.

Mucosal immunization appears to be an optimal route of vaccination for the viruses of interest, according to the NIH.

However, to develop useful mucosal vaccines, significant knowledge gaps must be filled, including finding ideal vaccine formulations; determining dosage size, frequency and timing; and developing techniques for overcoming immune tolerance.

15 mn Bitcoin stagnant in past 6 months amid crypto winter

0

In a significant concern for many in the cryptocurrency community amid the deepening crypto winter, the total amount of inactive Bitcoin (BTC) for at least six months has grown to over 15 million.

According to an analysis by CryptoMonday.de, Bitcoin “hodlers” are becoming increasingly popular, with investors looking to hold onto their BTC longer. Hodlers are long-term holders of a cryptocurrency, who buy and hold regardless of price.

Stagnant BTC supply since 2010 has slowly increased over the years, with a few exceptions in 2018 and late 2021.

“This indicates that Bitcoin holders are increasing their holdings rather than trading or moving them around,” said the report.

“The stagnation is due to the constant decline in BTC prices which has lowered people’s interest in trading at the moment. Besides, it is possible that the network is not used as much as it once was. This could be due to the increasing use of alternative cryptos like Ethereum,” said Jonathan Merry, CEO of CryptoMonday.

Bitcoin stagnation can be a concern for many people in the cryptocurrency community.

For one, it signals a lack of liquidity in the market that could cause massive price swings if there is even a slight change in demand.

It could also signal that institutional investors are making BTC lose its volatility and turning it into an asset with minimal price movement, said the report.

“It may be too soon to draw any conclusions from this data. Nevertheless, it is a clear indication that ‘hodlers’ are increasing their holdings and remaining confident in the future of Bitcoin,” said the report.

The BTC price remains stagnant at around $17,000 apiece for a while. It is a possibility that BTC has reached a saturation point, with most of the people interested in buying BTC already having done so.

“Besides, the current economic conditions are not conducive to BTC growth. People are more interested in saving and investing their money rather than speculating on the future value of BTC,” the report noted.

Modi calls up Israeli PM Netanyahu, congratulates him for 6th term

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday had a telephone conversation with his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu, and congratulated him on his election as PM for the sixth time.

The two leaders expressed satisfaction at the rapid progress in the India-Israel strategic partnership in recent years and agreed on the potential for further strengthening strategic cooperation in a variety of areas.

PM Modi also invited Netanyahu to visit India at an early date.

Andhra releases Rs 395 crore towards interest-free loans for traders

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy on Wednesday released Rs 395 crore under Jagananna Thodu for interest-free loans.

Under this scheme, Rs 10,000 each would be given to 3.95 lakh small-time traders and artisans to make them self-sufficient.

The Chief Minister also released Rs 15.17 crore towards reimbursement of interest to benefit 13.28 lakh beneficiaries who have repaid loans promptly in the last six months.

In his remarks at the release program at his official residence, he said: “Beneficiaries of the scheme, besides becoming part and parcel of the self-employed community are also helping the society indirectly in a great way.”

Jagan Mohan Reddy stated that it is a matter of pride for the state that it has sanctioned Rs 2,406 crore in interest-free loans to 15,31,347 beneficiaries. As many as 8,74,745 traders and artisans have promptly repaid their loans and have become an inseparable part of the scheme.

“This indicates a good change in the society,” he observed.

The CM reiterated that eligible people who could not avail of the scheme for various reasons in the past could still apply through village and ward secretariats and such people would be included in the scheme at the end of the social audit every six months.

Stating the reason behind the government’s push, he said that he had seen the hardships of several artisans and traders during his Praja Sankalpa Yatra and had decided back then that he would end their woes by introducing the Jagananna Thodu and assisting them in every possible manner.

“With today’s disbursal that benefits 28,000 new traders and artisans, the government has so far reimbursed Rs.63.65 crore as interest alone while the total loan amount sanctioned has benefitted 15.31 lakh people of which 80 percent belong to SC, ST, BC, and minority communities,” he said.

Vendors who sell fruits, vegetables, and foodstuffs on push carts, people running roadside tiffin centers, and others selling products in baskets and vending products on motorcycles and auto rickshaws besides Bobbili veena makers, artisans involved in brass work, Kondapalli and Etikoppaka toy makers, puppet, Kalankari and lace makers are among the beneficiaries.

Adelaide International 2: Badosa, Kasatkina seal quarterfinal slots

0

Paula Badosa of Spain bolstered her start to the season by sealing a spot in the Adelaide International 2 quarterfinals with a 6-1, 7-5 win over lucky loser Kaia Kanepi, here on Wednesday.

With her 1-hour and 23-minute victory over seven-time Grand Slam quarter-finalist Kanepi, No.9 seed Badosa has defeated the two Estonians ranked inside the Top 40 back-to-back this week. She ousted Estonian No.1 Anett Kontaveit in the first round.

Former World No.2 Badosa survived 27 winners from big-hitting Kanepi to level their rivalry at one win apiece. Badosa had 22 winners and just eight unforced errors in the match.

The Spaniard eased through the first set before Kanepi made a much tougher test of things in the second set. However, a backhand volley winner in the 4-4 game gave Badosa a breakpoint, which she converted after a wide rally backhand by Kanepi.

Kanepi, though, returned to level footing immediately, as Badosa double-faulted the next game away when serving for the match. But Badosa used heavy, deep returns to reclaim her break and lead 6-5, where she successfully served out the win on the second time of asking.

Badosa will next meet No.11 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia, who defeated another lucky loser, Amanda Anisimova, earlier in the day.

Meanwhile, No.5 seed Daria Kasatkina also moved into the quarterfinals with a win on Wednesday. Kasatkina knocked out former Roland Garros champion Barbora Krejcikova 6-2, 7-5 to clinch her spot in the elite eight.

World No.8 Kasatkina took an hour and a half to notch the victory and level her head-to-head record against Krejcikova at 1-1. Kasatkina hit six aces and converted four of her seven break points en route to her first win of the 2023 season.

Kasatkina will take on another Grand Slam champion in the quarterfinals when she faces two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova on Thursday. In their only prior meeting, Kvitova dismissed Kasatkina 6-4, 6-0 in the 2018 Madrid quarterfinals.

Chinese scientists ‘create’ quantum code-breaking algorithm, US experts worried

0

A Chinese team has claimed that their new, quantum code-breaking algorithm could dramatically reduce the scale of a practical quantum computer, which has raised eyebrows in the US, media reports said on Wednesday.

The team, led by Professor Long Guilu of Tsinghua University, claimed in a paper (yet to be published) that its new algorithm could reduce the scale of a practical quantum computer to 372 qubits – even less than that of IBM’s Osprey, reports South China Morning Post.

Osprey operates with “433 qubits and is nowhere near breaking codes”.

IBM November last year unveiled a new 433 qubit Quantum processor that has the potential to run complex quantum computations well beyond the computational capability of any typical computer.

Called ‘IBM Osprey,’ it has the largest qubit count of any IBM quantum processor, more than tripling the 127 qubits on the IBM ‘Eagle’ processor unveiled in 2021.

According to the report, the new claim by Chinese scientists has left senior security and quantum experts in the US concerned.

American cryptographer Bruce Schneier said the Chinese claim “is something to take seriously”.

“It might not be correct, but it’s not obviously wrong. And there’s the nagging question of why the Chinese government didn’t classify this research,” Schneier said in a blog post.

Scott Aaronson, director of the quantum information center at the University of Texas at Austin, said a major problem with the Chinese research paper “was its failure to clarify the advantage of quantum technology over classical computers”.

“It seems to me that a miracle would be required for the approach here to yield any benefit at all, compared to just running the classical Schnorr’s algorithm on your laptop,” Aaronson wrote in a blog post.

According to IBM, the number of classical bits that would be necessary to represent a state on the ‘IBM Osprey’ processor far exceeds the total number of atoms in the known universe.

“The new 433 qubit ‘Osprey’ processor brings us a step closer to the point where quantum computers will be used to tackle previously unsolvable problems,” said Dr. Dario Gil, Senior Vice President, of IBM and Director of Research.

Teens with optimistic, happy feelings may lead to better health in adulthood

0

Teenagers with the feeling of optimism, happiness, self-esteem, belongingness, and love, were more likely to reach their 20s and 30s in good cardiometabolic health compared to teens with fewer of these positive psychological assets, a new study has shown.

According to the study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, fostering positive psychological assets in teenagers may help prevent cardiometabolic disease in adulthood and may also play a role in addressing health inequities.

The study mentioned that the way teens — especially Black youth — feel about their lives may impact their cardiometabolic health risk as adults.

“We learned a lot in the last few decades about the impact of discrimination and other social risks youth of color face that may explain their elevated rates of cardiometabolic disease, however, much less attention is paid to the inherent strengths they possess and the ways those strengths may be leveraged to advance health equity,” said lead study author Farah Qureshi, ScD, MHS, an assistant professor at the US-based Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Researchers identified five mental health assets associated with better cardiometabolic health outcomes based on survey responses when participants were teenagers: optimism, happiness, self-esteem, belonging, and feeling loved.

The study found that about 55 percent of youth had zero to one positive mental health asset, while 29 percent had two to three assets and 16 percent had four to five assets.

As young adults, only 12 percent of participants maintained cardiometabolic health over time, and white youth were more likely to maintain good health later in life compared to Black or Latino youth.

Teens with four to five positive mental health assets were 69 percent more likely to maintain positive cardiometabolic health as young adults.

While psychological assets were beneficial to all racial and ethnic groups, Black youth experienced the greatest health benefits, according to the study.

Black teens also reported having more positive mental health assets than the youth of any other racial or ethnic group.

Despite having the most assets and reaping the most health benefits from them, there were still racial disparities in cardiometabolic health in adulthood. Black individuals were the least likely to maintain good cardiometabolic health over time, said the study.

“This work suggests that early investments in youth mental health may be a critical new frontier in the advancement of cardiometabolic health equity,” Qureshi said.

A film with just puppies and a rooster, ‘Valatti’ all set for a notable first

The makers of ‘Valatti’, a magical love story in which puppies speak and sing, have released the motion poster of the movie.

The crew took more than three years to select and rear the puppies, train them for their roles, and complete the rest of the production. Producer Vijay Babu opined that ‘Valatti’ is the most experimental and also the toughest project that the Friday Film House has taken up to date.

Director Devan commented that ‘Valatti’ was his dream project.

Leading stars in Malayalam have been dubbed for the puppies and the rooster characters in the film. The makers have kept the names of the stars who had lent their voices to the film as a surprise till the premiere.

The makers, Friday Film House have earlier produced some refreshingly different films in Malayalam.

‘Valatti’ is yet another different and innovative entertainer that Friday Film House has produced after the super hit films ‘Philips and the Money Pen’, ‘Angamali Diaries’, the ‘Aadu’ series and the first OTT-exclusive release in Malayalam, ‘Sufiyum Sujathyum’.

The writer and director of this film Devan is the 14th debutante director that Friday Film House is introducing to the big screen.

‘Valatti’ presents many firsts to the Malayalam film industry. It is the first pan-Indian film without big stars to release worldwide in five languages — Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi.

Apart from these, several dogs belonging to different breeds also feature in the supporting cast.

‘Valatti’ the 18th film from Friday Film House will be released in theatres during the summer break.

All flights grounded across US after massive computer outage

All flights across the US currently remain grounded after a huge computer outage left the passengers stranded, international media reported.

Passengers have been left waiting on the tarmac after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) suffered a nationwide system error, which has left flights grounded indefinitely, Mirror reported.

The system, critical for relaying essential information to flights, has been out since Monday evening, and it’s now starting to affect services in and out of the US, as per the reports.

The FAA notified that the system was down via an Air Traffic Control System Command Center (ATCSCC) advisory, stating that the US NOTAM system failed at 20:28 UTC. It said that technicians were working to restore the system, but that there was no estimated time for the resolution of the problem, media reports said.

According to the Air Traffic Control System Command Center: “The NOTAMS outage continues with no current estimated time of restoration. A hotline has been activated.”

Bettina Inclan, who has been left waiting at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, tweeted: “Update from our United pilot – The down system doesn’t let him check flight plans and follow federal regulations,” Mirror reported.
