Joe Root talks about his idol Sachin Tendulkar ahead of ILT20 season opener

0

One of the best batters currently in action, former England captain Joe Root has revealed why he thinks so highly of his idol, legendary India batter Sachin Tendulkar.

Root, who will represent Dubai Capitals in the inaugural DP World ILT20 against Abu Dhabi Knight Riders on Friday, said he is impressed by the manner in which Tendulkar handled the tremendous pressure that he faced during his playing days.

“I mean obviously there are some wonderful players currently playing but look at what Sachin has achieved, it’s just remarkable really, the longevity, the ability to be such a high-performing player at such a young age, and then to be able to sustain and to keep developing and moving forward in the game,” Root told, speaking exclusively to the Zee Network, the official broadcasters of ILT20.

“There have been times when he’s carried the weight of the pressure on his shoulders, and he did it for over 20 years. He made his debut before I was born and played in my debut, and it just shows how and what he was for Indian Cricket for such a long period,” he said.

“Truly great at the game, someone that you know, along with many others. I was a kid and I was admiring the way he played, how easy it looked, and not only has he contributed to Indian cricket but also world cricket. So yeah, definitely a standout for me as a kid growing up,” he added.

Ahead of the first clash between Dubai Capitals and Abu Dhabi Knight Riders of DP World ILT20, ADKR skipper Sunil Narine spoke about 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup winner Joe Root from Dubai Capitals exclusively to the Zee Network.

“He is a class player, he has done so much for England cricket, hence definitely not taking him lightly,” said Narine.

Fans can catch the live action of the first clash between DC and ADKKR in the DP World ILT20 on Friday (January 13) only on the Zee Network and Zee5 from 6:45 pm IST onwards.

I just took it casually and then after coming back, I went to Delhi and despite having a cold and cough, I just kept traveling, went to Jaipur and then again back to Mumbai. She added: “In January I started having pain in my chest, although normally in such a situation you feel pain in your throat, I felt in my chest. My oxygen level went extremely down and all the symptoms were quite similar to Covid. I collapsed and was rushed to the hospital where the doctor asked me to undergo a CT scan immediately.”

The actress continued to recall how both of her lungs got infected: “Then it came out that both my lungs were infected with pneumonia. And the doctor is like you will have to get oxygen because you’re not able to breathe properly until I don’t put you on some medication for your chest, it won’t go. ISL 2022-23: Small details have a big impact, says Mumbai City captain Rahul Bheke ahead of clash with Bagan

0

Mumbai-born defender and one of the most experienced Indian footballers, Rahul Bheke has played a key role in the former champions of the Indian Super League (ISL) being perched atop of the standings.

Bheke has been instrumental in Mumbai City FC’s successful season. The Islanders, as they are fondly known, currently sit at the top of the table for the ISL 2022-23 season, where they have enjoyed an undefeated campaign so far, with 33 points in 13 games. In their most recent clash, they secured an authoritative home victory against third-placed Kerala Blasters, winning 4-0 at home.

Bheke and Mumbai City will come up against another tough challenge next in the ISL as the Islanders travel to Kolkata to take on ATK Mohun Bagan on January 14 at the VYBK.

Representing his hometown of Mumbai, Rahul etched his name in the record books last year in 2022, when he scored the winning header against Iraq’s Air Force Club, to become the first Indian to score a goal at the AFC Champions League and helped Mumbai become the first Indian club ever to win an AFC Champions League game.

This season, Bheke has played and led the squad in all thirteen games for the Islanders and he boasts impressive numbers. He has made 20 interceptions, 26 blocks, 37 tackles, and 28 clearances and consequently, has been an integral component of Mumbai City’s defense as they have conceded only 13 goals this season, less than any other ISL side besides Hyderabad.

Bheke, a leader, both on and off the pitch, spoke on Mumbai’s immaculate form this season and also on the impact of coach Des Buckingham on the squad’s dynamics as they gear up for a bigger challenge in the next few months.

“The players are demanding a lot from each other, continuous improvement is the expectation. Not only on the pitch but in training as well. We have been working hard on sticking to our game style through the 90 minutes. Our performances have been getting us results so it is important for us to stay disciplined and maintain the intensity,” Bheke said.

Mumbai City has been thriving under head coach Des Buckingham with a solid concoction of youth and experience.

Bheke, one of the leaders of the Mumbai City camp, opined, “We have a lot of quality young players and I don’t think they can find a better set-up than Mumbai City FC. This includes the Indian players, the foreign players, and the coaching staff. They have the right people around them and they have been taking advantage of that.”

As a captain and mentor in the team, Bheke consistently reiterates the same advice to young players, “Young players need to keep learning, regardless of whether they are getting game time or not, they have to give their best in every training session. This is the only way to keep improving.”

Being a born and raised Mumbaikar himself, Bheke feels a special connection to the team. “It’s a proud moment for me, every time I step onto the pitch and even more so when playing a home game, it feels like family at Mumbai City.” He added that the return of fans to the stadium has made this season feel even more special. “It was really difficult for us last year, during the bio-bubble. Having no fans in the stands is like going to a party without music. It’s great to have them back and it is very motivating to be playing in sold-out stadiums. I hope the fans keep coming and that we continue to grow with them. That’s what the team wants and that is what the league wants.”

As a crucial component of the Mumbai City squad, Bheke must be as fit as he can be. He works incessantly to ensure that he is available for all games. “I pay close attention to my daily routine and manage my workload, whether it is on the field or at the gym. I also ensure that I am getting the right kind of nutrition and constantly getting enough sleep. These factors really help me stay fit physically and mentally.”

Finally, Bheke attributed Mumbai’s success to the leadership and acumen of coach Des Buckingham, who recently signed a two-year contract extension with the club.

“He has massively impacted the playing style of the team as a whole and even individual players. I’m glad that the continuity will be there and I’m sure the fans, the team, the staff, each and everyone wants the clubs to grow and I’m sure he will do that. He has helped us tremendously, to grow as players and to be better teammates. The small details that he focuses on have a big impact.

“The way we played in the AFC Champions League, the Durand Cup, and the way we are playing this season is because of the work that he has done with us over the last 15 months. The coach has set clear targets for us, both as a team and individually, and we have been consistently hitting those benchmarks. This is the reason we have been getting the results we desire,” he added.

Table tennis: Olympic champ Ma Long stunned in WTTC Asia Continental Stage

0

World No. 2 Ma Long of China swallowed a full-set defeat at the hands of Japan’s Maharu Yoshimura in the second-round group match at the WTTC Asia Continental Stage here on Tuesday.

After sharing the spoils with Yoshimura in the first six sets, Ma slipped away 11-3 in the deciding set. The legendary Chinese paddler will compete in position games on Wednesday to vie for a World Table Tennis Championships (WTTC) Finals spot.

Despite Ma’s shock defeat, China has secured four men’s and five women’s singles berths at the World Table Tennis Championships (WTTC) Finals.

Sun Yingsha, Chen Meng, Wang Yidi, and Chen Xingtong all claimed straight-sets victories in the women’s singles, while their fellow Chinese teammate Wang Manyu rallied past Choi Hyo-Joo of South Korea 4-1, reports news agency Xinhua.

“I just focused on myself in preparation and hoped to give full play to my tactics in the match,” said Olympic champion Chen Meng.

Wang Manyu admitted that she had many unforced errors in the first set. “My opponent played with aggressiveness. Down 3-7 in the second set, I felt huge pressure but managed to fight back, and then I felt a bit relieved,” she commented.

Other action saw men’s singles world No. 1 Fan Zhendong sweep Harmeet Desai of India in straight sets. Wang Chuqin got past Iranian Noshad Alamiyan 4-1, and Liang Jingkun defeated Ho Kwan Kit of Hong Kong, China 4-2.

Wang revealed that before the match he had consulted teammate Lin Gaoyuan about his experience of playing against Alamiyan, who shocked Lin 4-2 in the first round of the 2022 Table Tennis Asian Cup.

“Alamiyan has quality serves, backhand and defense. You have to fit into his rhythm as soon as possible, otherwise, you will fall behind very quickly,” commented Wang.

Xiang Peng, the only Chinese player who needed to start from the first round, beat Amir Hossein Hodaei of Iran 4-1.

China secured the full quota in the men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles events of the world on Monday. The 2023 WTTC Finals will take place in Durban, South Africa from May 20 to 28.

Meta to limit ads targeting teens on Facebook, Instagram

0

Meta has announced that it is bringing further updates to its ad system, including removing gender as an option for advertisers to reach users under 18 on Facebook and Instagram.

Starting in February, advertisers will only be able to use age and location to reach teens, the company said in a blog post on Tuesday.

Age and location will be the only information about a teen that the company will use to show them advertisements, which will make sure that teens see ads that are meant for their age and products and services available where they live.

Moreover, starting in March, users under 18 will have more ways to manage the types of advertisements they see on Facebook and Instagram with Ad Topic Controls.

Teens can also choose to hide any or all advertisements from a specific advertiser.

“The topics we already restrict in our policies will be defaulted to See Less so that teens can’t choose to opt into content that may not be age-appropriate,” Meta said.

“We’ve added a new privacy page with more information for teens about the tools and privacy settings they can use across our technologies,” it added.

NASA mission spots 2nd Earth-size world within ‘habitable zone’

0

NASA mission has discovered a second Earth-sized, rocky planet within the habitable zone of its star — the range of distances where liquid water could occur on a planet’s surface.

Using data from NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), the astronomers found “TOI 700 e” which is one of only a few systems with multiple, small, habitable-zone planets that we know of.

Astronomers previously discovered three planets in this system, called TOI 700 b, c, and d.

Planet d also orbits in the habitable zone, but the scientists needed an additional year of TESS observations to discover TOI 700 e.

“That makes the TOI 700 system an exciting prospect for additional follow-up. Planet e is about 10 percent smaller than planet d, so the system also shows how additional TESS observations help us find smaller and smaller worlds,” said Emily Gilbert, a postdoctoral fellow at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California who led the work.

TOI 700 is a small, cool M dwarf star located around 100 light-years away in the southern constellation Dorado.

In 2020, Gilbert and others announced the discovery of the Earth-size, habitable-zone planet d, which is in a 37-day orbit, along with two other worlds.

The innermost planet, TOI 700 b, is about 90 percent of Earth’s size and orbits the star every 10 days.

TOI 700 c is over 2.5 times bigger than Earth and completes an orbit every 16 days.

“The planets are probably tidally locked, which means they spin only once per orbit such that one side always faces the star, just as one side of the Moon is always turned toward Earth,” the US space agency said in a statement late on Tuesday.

TOI 700 e, which may also be tidally locked, takes 28 days to orbit its star, placing planet e between planets c and d in the so-called optimistic habitable zone.

Scientists define the optimistic habitable zone as the range of distances from a star where liquid surface water could be present at some point in a planet’s history.

This area extends to either side of the conservative habitable zone, the range where researchers hypothesize liquid water could exist over most of the planet’s lifetime. TOI 700 d orbits in this region.

“Finding other systems with Earth-size worlds in this region helps planetary scientists learn more about the history of our own solar system,” said scientists.

Gilbert presented the result on behalf of her team at the 241st meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Seattle, the US.

A paper about the newly discovered planet was accepted by The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Golden Globes 2023: ‘House of the Dragon’ beats big challengers, wins Best Drama Series

The ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel series’ House of the Dragon’ managed to do what its sequel couldn’t — it clinched a top TV series award at the 80th Golden Globes.

It was named Best Drama Series as it beat out the other nominees in the category including AMC’s ‘Better Call Saul’, Netlix’s ‘The Crown’ and ‘Ozark’, and Apple TV+’s ‘Severance’.

The series executive producer, Miguel Sapochnik accepted the award in the company of stars Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke.

Recalling the relief that the makers of ‘House of the Dragon’ felt when the prequel debuted, he said: “It was really heartwarming to know that we actually tread in the footsteps of ‘Game of Thrones,’ because that was one really good show.”

Miguel admitted he didn’t think the show would be victorious. While he did not say who he believed would win, he praised ‘Severance’.

‘House of Dragon’s Golden Globe win comes as a surprise. The experts had predicted ‘Better Call Saul’ and ‘Ozark’ had a fighting chance considering they were nominated for their final seasons.

On the positive response ‘RRR’ has been getting in the run-up to the awards, Rajamouli said: “It humbles me that I get love from so many people.” In the same spirit, NTR Jr had told ‘Variety’ in another red carpet interview: “We thought we had a winner, but it turned out to be more than a winner … you don’t expect this to happen.”

Earlier, the actor had tweeted: “Congratulations Sirji on your well-deserved #GoldenGlobes award! I’ve danced to many songs throughout my career but #NaatuNaatu will forever stay close to my heart…@mmkeeravaani”

Cheering the win, ‘Los Angeles Times tweeted (and promoted the profile it carried of Rajamouli): “Last night, the audience at #RRRMovie’s sold-out Chinese Theater screening swarmed the stage to dance during the ‘Naatu Naatu’ number. Today, composer M.M. Keeravani won the Golden Globe for best original song.”

Meta now ‘rescinds’ full-time job offers amid recession fears

0

As layoffs deepen in New Year, Meta (formerly Facebook) has reportedly rescinded full-time employment offers to some people, which is a first for the company as it never took back job offers in its history.

According to tech writer Gergely Orosz, Meta has rescinded job offers in London, “as I confirmed with developers impacted. New grads with offers due to start in February have been taken back in bulk. I know of about 20 people so far”.

“This is the first time I’m aware that Meta is taking back signed, FTE (full-time employment) offers,” Orosz said in a tweet.

Meta’s position until now was that FTE offers are “NOT at risk, up to even a week ago”.

In October this year, recruiters made it clear to candidates worried about their Meta offers that these are safe, according to Orosz.

The worst lay-off in the global tech industry by Meta, which saw 11,000 employees being shown the door, has hit India teams too, albeit marginally, reliable sources said on Wednesday.

In one of the worst lay-offs ever in the tech industry that saw 11,000 employees being shown the door, Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg in November last year fired about 13 percent of the global workforce and extended the hiring freeze through Q1 2023.

Zuckerberg said that as a severance measure, the company will pay 16 weeks of base pay, along with two additional weeks for every year of service, “with no cap”.

“Outside the US, support will be similar, and we’ll follow up soon with separate processes that take into account local employment laws,” he had said.

Triggered by Twitter, several tech companies like Amazon and Salesforce have laid off thousands of employees amid global economic recession fears in 2023.

Crypto exchange Coinbase fires 950 people, shuts down ‘several’ projects

0

Crypto exchange Coinbase on Tuesday laid off 20 percent of its workforce, or about 950 people, to reduce its operating expenses amid the economic recession fears.

Coinbase Co-founder and CEO Brian Armstrong said that as part of this round of headcount reduction, “we will be shutting down several projects where we have a lower probability of success”.

The crypto company in June last year eliminated 18 percent of its workforce or nearly 1,100 people.

“We also reduced headcount last year as the market started to correct, and in hindsight, we could have cut further at that time,” said the CEO.

“As we examined our 2023 scenarios, it became clear that we would need to reduce expenses to increase our chances of doing well in every scenario,” he said in a statement.

And there was no way to reduce our expenses significantly enough, “without considering changes to headcount”.

Armstrong said that some other projects will continue to operate as normal, “just with fewer people on the team”.

Affected team members will receive an email to their personal accounts with more information.

“We will be providing a comprehensive package to support you through this transition. For those of you in the US, this includes a minimum of 14 weeks base pay (2 additional weeks per year worked), health insurance, and other benefits,” said the CEO.

“We are also providing extra transition support for impacted employees on a work visa. Those of you outside the US will receive similar support in line with the employment laws of your country,” he added.

‘Playing Tanhaji was a dream and an honour,’ says Ajay Devgn

As his film ‘Tanhaji: The Unsung Hero’ turned three on Tuesday, actor-filmmaker Ajay Devgn shared how playing the titular role was an honor and a dream come true for him.

Ajay took to his Instagram story and wrote: “Playing the role of Tanhaji was a dream and an honor, that resulted in the highest grosser of 2020 and also won us two National Awards. Happy & Humbled.”

His production house, Ajay Devgn Films shared a video featuring moments from the film on Instagram and the caption mentioned: “A film that united the entire nation.”

‘Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior’ was released in 2020. The film is a historical action film directed by Om Raut. Tracing the life of Maratha warrior Tanaji Malusare, it stars Ajay as the eponymous lead, Kajol, and Saif Ali Khan. It also features Neha Sharma, Sharad Kelkar, and Luke Kenny.

Set in the 17th century, it revolves around Tanaji’s attempts to recapture the Kondhana fortress once it passes on to Mughal emperor Aurangzeb who transfers its control to his trusted guard Udaybhan Singh Rathore.

Telecom Sector Skill Council to place over 1.25 lakh youth with focus on 5G

0

With the 5G rollout, India needs a ready-skilled workforce and the Telecom Sector Skill Council (TSSC) on Tuesday announced to get over 1.25 lakh candidates placed across the industry through its placement initiatives and training labs.

The Council also said it will establish at least 50 new training labs and centers of excellence (CoEs) across India for various telecom job roles.

The TSSC announced a five-year partnership with the Technology Innovation Hub on Autonomous Navigation (TiHAN) at IIT Hyderabad which will focus on joint projects in skilling in emerging technologies like 5G and its use cases, internet of things (IoT), Cloud, AI/ML and others.

“It’s not only 5G as the upcoming semiconductor technologies and the growth of electronics manufacturing in the country will also require a range of skills which students need to be acquainted with,” said K Rajaraman, Secretary, Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

The Council said that the new training labs and CoEs will be set up at the ITIs and premier universities in a “hub and spoke model”.

As an apex body for telecom skills, TSSC has expanded into new business avenues like the development of CoEs, international skill development programmes, placements, and paid programmes.

“5G technology is expected to boost the Indian economy by $450 billion between 2023 and 2040 and we are currently facing an acute shortage of about 1.4 lakh workers in 5G and its allied technologies,” said Arvind Bali, CEO, TSSC.

TSSC will also train 1 lakh youth in 5G and allied technologies over the next three years with support from DoT.

“We have trained over 10 lakh candidates in various roles catering to the telecom industry demand,” Bali informed.
