Adelaide International 2: Petra Kvitova continues perfect season start

0

Petra Kvitova has continued her perfect start to the 2023 season in Australia, with smooth progress into the Adelaide International 2 second round.

Following match wins over Jessica Pegula and Laura Siegemund at the United Cup in Sydney last week, the 32-year-old launched her Adelaide campaign with a 6-2 7-5 win over Elena Rybakina, reports adelaideinternational.com.au.

It was a clash of two Wimbledon champions in South Australia, with Kvitova lifting trophies at the All England Club in 2011 and 2014, while Rybakina triumphed at The Championships last year.

Another factor that favored Rybakina, a 23-year-old from Kazakhstan, was her performance as runner-up to Ash Barty in Adelaide last year.

From the outset, however, it was Kvitova who competed with greater authority in the first-round encounter, the Czech claiming a service break in the sixth game to take control of the first set.

After a tighter second set, Kvitova closed out victory after an hour and 25 minutes to set up a second-round clash with the winner between Anett Kontaveit and Paula Badosa.

“My serve worked very well today, so that’s why I’m very happy and it was a tough first round,” said Kvitova, who served seven aces, just one double fault, and didn’t face a break point against Rybakina.

“We didn’t have a lot of rallies. It was about the serve and first one or two points of the rallies, so I’m glad that I was there for every shot.”

Kvitova, the runner-up at Australian Open 2019, was equally grateful to return to a favorite setting in Australia.

Currently ranked world No.16, Kvitova has claimed two of her 29 professional singles trophies in Sydney and noted that participating in the inaugural United Cup mixed teams tournament last week added to her confidence, especially on Australia’s hard courts.

“I love quicker surfaces,” said the left-hander. “I enjoyed it, especially with the boys. It was a fun vibe and everything. It just gave me great practices and great matches and a great attitude as well.

“I came here playing quite well, so I’m glad that I showed it today as well.”

Danielle Collins is similarly partial to the conditions in Australia, as the American demonstrated in a sound 6-2 6-4 victory over Karolina Pliskova.

“I always enjoy the atmosphere and the awesome food here in Adelaide and just being here,” said Collins, who required an hour and 17 minutes to secure victory.

“I’m lucky to be back and hope to keep the good momentum going.”

Showing the form that saw her finish runner-up at Australian Open 2022, Collins raced to a 5-0 first-set lead against Pliskova before the Czech briefly rallied.

A former world No.1. Pliskova has fallen to world No.31 after injury and form challenges over the past year. Maximizing her heavy groundstrokes, she clawed one game back as Collins served for the opener, but it proved a reprieve.

“She hit some really good shots that were too good,” the American noted of Pliskova. “I just had to try and make some adjustments and get myself back into it, get my rhythm, and just stay calm.”

Movement, efficiency, and composure were all sound for the American, who recalibrated to set up a second-round meeting with Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann.

The world No.33 Teichmann was a 7-5 6-4 winner over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who was contesting her first match in eight months after an injury absence.

Beatriz Haddad-Maia also moved into the second round of the WTA 500 tournament, the world No.15 from Brazil requiring 77 minutes to complete a 7-6(5) 6-1 victory over Sorana Cirstea.

Defunct US satellite may possibly fall around Korean Peninsula

0

The South Korean science ministry on Monday warned that a retired US satellite could possibly fall on the Korean Peninsula and its vicinity.

Launched in 1984, the Earth Radiation Budget Satellite (ERBS) was set to fall on Earth around 5.10 a.m. India time on Monday (plus or minus 17 hours) after completing its decades-long mission to study how the Earth absorbed and radiated energy from the sun.

The Ministry of Science and ICT said the ERBS is forecast to crash back down to Earth and the Korean Peninsula is included in the regions that the satellite would fall toward, reported Yonhap news agency.

The ministry said the majority of the satellite will burn up upon re-entry into the atmosphere but asked Korean people to remain cautious about some components that will likely survive the process and reach the surface.

Meanwhile, NASA predicted that most of the 5,400-pound (2,450 kilograms) defunct satellite will burn up as it travels through the atmosphere, but some components are expected to survive the reentry.

“The risk of harm coming to anyone on Earth is very low — approximately 1 in 9,400,” a NASA official said.

ERBS, part of NASA’s three-satellite Earth Radiation Budget Experiment mission, was launched to low Earth orbit aboard the space shuttle Challenger in 1984.

ERBS used three scientific instruments to study how our planet absorbs and radiates solar energy.

“It was designed to operate for just two years but kept ticking until 2005, after which it became a hefty hunk of space junk. Drag has been pulling the spacecraft down gradually ever since,” reports Space.com.

In 2022, two roughly 23-tonne Chinese aLong March 5B’ rocket cores fell back to Earth uncontrolled.

Ranbir, Alia hold hands, enjoy football match from stands

Bollywood couple Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor, who is currently enjoying parenthood, were recently spotted watching a football match and supporting Mumbai FC.

Ranbir co-owns Mumbai FC, he was seen sporting his team jersey, a pair of denims and a black cap as his team squared off against Kerala Blasters.

Alia, on the other hand, kept it simple as she wore a black jacket and rounded up her look with open tresses.

During the match, the two were seen holding hands and discussing the game from the stands. After the match, the two walked onto the field and clicked pictures.

Ranbir is a huge football fan, the announcement of his and Alia’s daughter’s name serves as testimony to the fact. While announcing the name of their daughter – Raha in November last year, Alia had taken to her Instagram to share a picture of herself, Ranbir, and Raha.

While the three were out of focus, the Barcelona jersey hanging on the wall behind them had Raha’s name written over it. Ranbir is an avid fan of Barcelona which participates in the La Liga tournament.

On the work front, while Ranbir has Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s ‘Animal’ in the pipeline, Alia has ‘Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani’ and the Hollywood movie ‘Heart of Stone’.

Dakar Rally: Ross Branch wins Stage 8

0

Hero MotoSports Team Rally scripted history once again by winning a stage at the world’s toughest rally — Dakar Rally.

Ross Branch finished Stage 8 in the fastest time, securing the second Dakar Stage win for himself, and for Hero MotoSports Team Rally.

For Hero MotoSports Team Rally, which entered rally racing only seven years ago, this is the second taste of victory, and in consecutive Dakar rallies, making it one of the flag-bearers of Indian motorsports. In 2022 it had become the first Indian manufacturer team ever to win a Stage at the Dakar.

Sebastian Buhler also made it into the top 10 of stage 8, finishing in the 6th position, just 8 minutes behind Ross. Franco Caimi continued his steady performance and finished the stage in the 16th position in the Rally GP class.

Ross’ stunning dash to the finish today has revitalized the morale of the team, ending the first leg of the Rally on a high note. Even though they started well with a podium in the Prologue, and another podium in Stage 2, the week took a tough turn with Joaquim Rodrigues crashing and exiting the race, and quite a few problems for Ross and Buhler in the later stages.

After a canceled Stage 7, Stage 8 was an 824 km long ride from Al Duwadimi to Riyadh, of which 346 kms formed the special section. Aligning with the ad-hoc marathon stage that was designed by the race organizers, the competitors spent the previous night at the Al Duwadimi bivouac, while the service crews camped 500 km away in Riyadh. Tough and tricky, Stage 8 was fast and not without its fair share of sand, stony tracks, and dunes. The team had fun on the stage, riding as fast as they could.

Franco Caimi has put in a consistent performance so far and enjoys 15th place in the overall standings. Sebastian Buhler and Ross Branch follow him in the 18th and 20th positions respectively, in the overall Rally GP class rankings.

Re-united with the rest of the team in Riyadh, the riders will enjoy a quick rest day and recover as best possible to fight in the remaining six days of the Rally. Stage 9 on 10th January will be a 686 km route eastward to Haradh, taking the riders through some majestic wadis and canyons.

Ross Branch said, “It’s amazing to be here! We worked really hard for it. It has been a tough week, and I’m really happy to go into the rest day with a Stage Win. This morning I felt really good, the bike was excellent, and I decided to push as hard as I could. It was a good stage, the navigation was fine, and I thoroughly enjoyed it as I went all out and raced the whole thing! A big thank you to the team for all the amazing effort, and for not giving up on me. It’s a happy day, and hopefully, we’ll gather some more wins next week!”

Dembele’s goal moves Barcelona three clear in La Liga

0

FC Barcelona reopened a three-point lead over Real Madrid at the top of La Liga with a 1-0 win away to Atletico Madrid.

Ousmane Dembele’s goal midway through the first half after good work by Pedri and Gavi was enough to give Barca the win, reports Xinhua news agency.

The league leaders struggled at times to create clear chances without the suspended Robert Lewandowski, but produced a much-improved defensive display to frustrate an Atletico side in which Joao Felix failed to make a difference.

Tempers frayed in the closing moments and both Barca’s Ferran Torres and Atletico defender Stefan Savic were sent off for fighting moments before Ronald Araujo cleared off the line to deny Antoine Griezmann.

Real Sociedad enjoyed a comfortable 2-0 win away to Almeria thanks to second-half goals from David Silva and Alexander Sorloth to strengthen their position in third.

The San Sebastian outfit has won their last three La Liga matches and Sunday’s win lifted them to within six points of second-placed Real Madrid, who lost to Villarreal 2-1 on Saturday.

Real Betis won 2-1 away to Rayo Vallecano with Luiz Henrique scoring the winning goal.

Before the Brazilian’s 40th-minute winner, Betis had taken the lead when Rayo keeper Stole Dimitrievski punched the ball into the head of his teammate Ivan Balliu for it to rebound into the net.

Sergio Camello leveled for Rayo in the 20th minute after an error from Rui Silva, but Henrique’s goal proved decisive.

Marcos Acuna’s first-half header and another header from Rafa Mir 10 minutes from time gave Sevilla a vital 2-1 win at home to Getafe.

Borja Mayoral pulled a goal back for the visitors in the closing minutes, but it wasn’t enough to save a point and Sevilla climb out of the bottom three.

On Saturday, Argentina’s World Cup-winning coach Lionel Scaloni returned to Spain to watch Mallorca beat Real Valladolid 1-0.

Espanyol is still struggling in the relegation zone after being denied a win by a late goal from Girona midfielder Yangel Herrera in a 2-2 tie.

Friday night saw Iago Aspas give Celta Vigo a 1-0 win away to bottom side Elche, while Ruben Alcaraz’s ninth-minute strike saw Cadiz shock Valencia 1-0 to lift them closer to safety.

President Droupadi Murmu gives away Digital India Awards 2022

0

The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, on Saturday presented the seventh edition of the Digital India Awards 2022 in which 22 innovative digital initiatives by government entities were felicitated.

The Minister for Communications, Electronics & Information Technology and Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, the President said that the Digital India Awards 2022 acknowledge, inspire and motivate not only government entities, but also startups to attain the vision of a digital India. The awards are but a step towards transforming India into a digitally empowered society where people’s potential is unleashed by effective use of digital governance, she said.

The President also said that social justice should be the prime objective of digital innovations. India would develop into a knowledge economy only when the digital divide is substantially bridged through the use of technology.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Vaishnaw recalled how Prime Minister Narendra Modi had initiated the Digital India program eight years ago.

Since then, India has set an example for the world by harnessing technology to deliver services to people at the grassroots level, he said.

Digital India Awards encourage and honor innovative digital initiatives by government entities at all levels. These awards aim to inspire and motivate not only government entities, but also startups and grassroots level digital initiatives in fulfilling the Digital India vision.

e-NAM, a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, won the Platinum Award in the Digital Empowerment of Citizens category. Transport Mission Mode Project (transport) received a gold award while Judgment Search Portal received the silver award in the same category.

Similarly, e-Vivechna App (MP) received the platinum award in Digital Initiatives at Grassroots Level category, while DeGS Computer Basic Training (Jharkhand) received gold and Ksheerasree Portal (Kerala) received the silver award in the same category.

James Cameron says ‘Avatar 2’ will ‘easily’ break even at the box office

Award-winning filmmaker James Cameron said that ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ will turn the profit it needs in order to get the remainder of his franchise sequels made.

The director, who was speaking on this week’s episode of ‘Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?,’ went viral in November, after telling GQ magazine that ‘The Way of Water’ was so expensive to make that it would have to “be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history” just to break even,” reports Variety.

The sequel has already earned over $1.5 billion worldwide to surpass ‘Top: Gun Maverick’ as the highest-grossing movie of 2022.

“It looks like with the momentum that the film has now that we’ll easily pass our break even in the next few days, so it looks like I can’t wiggle out of this and I’m gonna have to do these other sequels,” Cameron said.

“I know what I’m going to be doing the next six or seven years.”

Cameron added about the film turning a profit: “The point is we’re going to be okay. I’m sure that we’ll have a discussion soon with the top folks at Disney about the game plan going forward for ‘Avatar 3,’ which is already in the can – we’ve already captured and photographed the whole film, so we’re in extended post-production to do all that CG magic.”

“And then ‘Avatar’ 4 and 5 are both written. We even have some of 4 in the can. We’ve begun a franchise at this point. We’ve begun a saga that can now play out over multiple films.”

When Cameron said that ‘The Way of Water’ would need to become “the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history, just to “break-even”, it appeared he was referring to the $2 billion mark.

The director clarified his comment to Chris Wallace, saying: “I never actually gave it a number. I said it would have to be among the highest-grossing films in history and somebody else applied for that number and it got picked up. The number is actually less.”

Sources have told Variety that the movie’s break-even point was set at roughly $1.4 billion, a figure the movie has already crossed.

Insiders told Variety this week that the movie is going to generate a box office total of at least $1.825 billion, though $2 billion certainly remains in reach. Either way, Cameron says the film will be profitable enough to warrant the sequels.

So what can audiences expect to see as the ‘Avatar’ franchise moves forward? Cameron previously told France’s 20 Minutes that ‘Avatar 3’ will explore “different cultures from those I have already shown,” adding, “The fire will be represented by the people. I want to show the Na’vi from another angle because, so far, I have only shown their good sides.”

“In the early films, there are very negative human examples and very positive Na’vi examples,” the director continued. “In ‘Avatar 3,’ we will do the opposite.”

Producer Jon Landau told Gizmodo that once the ‘Avatar’ franchise reaches ‘Avatar 5,” the story will feature some Na’vi characters coming to Earth. He said: “In (‘Avatar 5’) there is a section of the story where we go to Earth. And we go to it to open people’s eyes, open Neytiri’s eyes, to what exists on Earth. Earth is not just represented by the RDA.”

“Just like you’re defined by the choices you make in life, not all humans are bad. Not all Na’vi are good. And that’s the case here on Earth. And we want to expose Neytiri to that.”

Ather Energy rolls out biggest upgrade to its EV 2-wheeler software

0

Homegrown electric vehicle company Ather Energy on Saturday announced that it has rolled out ‘AtherStack 5.0’, the biggest upgrade to its software engine which drives the vehicle.

“AtherStack 5.0 will be powering a brand new user interface (UI) for the dashboard in addition to launching vector maps powered by Google,” the company said in a statement.

Built on numerous interconnected layers of software, firmware, system intelligence, and algorithms, AtherStack is the software engine that powers “every single user experience on the Ather 450X”.

“In 2018, when we launched AtherStack in Ather 450, it was the first ever software engine on any two-wheeler in India, probably even globally,” said Tarun Mehta, co-founder, and CEO, Ather Energy.

“With a fluid new UI and Google Vector Maps, AtherStack 5.0 takes our touchscreen and maps experience to a whole new level. It also enables us to leverage our hardware to unlock new experiences such as AutoHold,” Mehta added.

The new upgrade gives the dashboard a fresh look and an even more intuitive UI which enhances the overall experience of operating the dashboard.

Quick controls have also been added, which allows users to easily adjust settings such as brightness or turn off incoming call notifications with a single click.

“Ather is the only scooter in the world providing onboard navigation powered by Google. With the new AtherStack 5.0, the UI will also feature vector maps, which are far more smarter and intuitive than the previous versions,” the company said.

“Powered by AtherStack 5.0, Ather launches AutoHold technology which ensures the scooter never rolls back or forward on a slope,” it added.

Moreover, the manufacturer announced the ‘Battery Protect’ which extends the battery warranty to 5 years/60,000 km.

According to the company, “this is the first such warranty program in the industry that not only covers battery failures but also guarantees a minimum of 70 percent state-of-health for the battery at the end of 5 years.”

Ather Energy also expanded options for customers by introducing four new colors, a new comfortable seat, and the ‘unveiling of Ather’s scooter accessories and merchandise’.

“As an ode to early adopters of Ather scooters, the company announced an industry-first buyback offer for its first 1,000 customers. This allows them to buy the new Ather 450X at Rs 80,000,” the manufacturer said.

Taylor Fritz sends US into United Cup final

Team United States sprinted to a 2-0 lead against Team Poland on Friday in the United Cup Final Four, and American Taylor Fritz finished the job Saturday morning.

The reigning BNP Paribas Open champion clawed past Hubert Hurkacz 7-6(5), 7-6(5) in the No. 1 men’s singles match to give his country an insurmountable 3-0 lead.

Jessica Pegula upset World No. 1 Iga Swiatek and Frances Tiafoe eased past Kacper Zuk to earn the Americans their first two points, reports unitedcup.com.

Fritz was followed by Madison Keys, who earned a 6-4, 6-2 triumph against Magda Linette. Fritz and Pegula then completed a 5-0 sweep with a 6-7(5), 6-4, 10-6 mixed doubles win against Lukasz Kubot and Alicja Rosolska. Team United States is now 4-0 in mixed doubles in Sydney.

In the championship match, Team United States will face Team Italy or Team Greece. Italy leads Greece 2-0 in their semi-final tie.

“I think whoever serves better is probably going to get over the line,” Tiafoe predicted for the Fritz-Hurkacz clash Friday afternoon.

That proved prophetic. Fritz won 88 percent of his first-serve points and was able to manoeuvre into comfortable positions in points behind his serve.

Hurkacz earned two set points on return at 5-4 in the first set. The Pole missed a mid-rally crosscourt forehand on his first opportunity and a forehand return just long on his second. Letting slip those chances proved his downfall.

The tension could be cut with a knife inside Ken Rosewall Arena during the first-set tie-break, as neither man relinquished a mini-break through the first 11 points. Fritz was able to take the initiative on his first set point and forced an error from Hurkacz’s backhand into the net.

Hurkacz also had opportunities to earn the match’s first break at 5-5, 15/40 on Fritz’s serve in the second set, but the American saved them with a big serve and forehand volley. The Pole once again seemed in position to force a decider with two serves at 5/4 in the tie-break, but he missed two forehands, which allowed Fritz to close out the match and with it, the tie.

Keys had split two previous encounters with Linette, both in the last two months. Indeed, Linette’s win had also been in team competition — a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 win in the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in November.

Both players brought an undefeated United Cup record into the match, and it was Keys who preserved hers with a dominant display of power. She did not face a break point throughout a tight first set while consistently creating chances on return. Though Linette was able to fend off the first two break points she faced, in the second and sixth games, Keys converted her fourth of the day — also a set point — by hammering a backhand return.

A classy drop shot paved the way to Linette’s only break of serve in the first game of the second set, but Keys responded by upping her focus to immediately break back and reel off six of the final seven games of the match.

Rishabh Pant operated for ligament tear on right knee in Mumbai: Report

0

India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, who miraculously survived a horrific car accident on December 30, was operated on for a ligament tear on his right knee.

A report by mid-day newspaper states that Pant was operated by Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, the head of the Centre for Sports Medicine, and Director of Arthroscopy & Shoulder Service at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani hospital in Andheri West, here on Friday.

“On Friday morning at around 10.30 am Dr. Pardiwala and his team conducted ligament tear surgery on his right knee, the surgery was performed for around 2 to 3 hours. The surgery went smoothly,” said the report.

The report added that the hospital didn’t confirm the development, saying they would not comment on the matter due to the privacy of the patient and that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) would release the statement.

It also said after Pant was airlifted to Mumbai from Dehradun on Wednesday, doctors have been evaluating his health condition and did some basic health checks on him before the surgery happened on Friday while adding that it will take some months for the left-handed batter to recover completely.

On December 30, around 5:30 am, Pant, 25, suffered multiple injuries when his car collided with a road divider and caught fire on the Delhi-Dehradun highway. The horrific car accident happened between Manglaur and Narsan in the Haridwar district in the state of Uttarakhand.

Pant was initially taken to Saksham Hospital Multispecialty and Trauma Centre, before being admitted to Max Hospital, Dehradun. He was on his way to his hometown Roorkee from New Delhi and was driving his Mercedes car.

The first medical update from the BCCI said Pant suffered two cuts on his forehead, a ligament tear in his right knee, and has also hurt his right wrist, ankle, and toe apart from abrasion injuries on his back after the car accident.

Later that evening, a medical bulletin said the results of Pant’s MRI of the brain and spine came out as normal. It added that Pant also underwent plastic surgery to manage his facial injuries, lacerated wounds, and abrasions.

Earlier, on Wednesday, the BCCI said in its second official medical update that Pant will be shifted from Dehradun to Mumbai via an air ambulance. At Mumbai, he is under the direct supervision of Dr. Pardiwala and will continue to be monitored by the BCCI Medical Team throughout his recovery and rehabilitation.

Adelaide International: Sabalenka masters Begu for final berth

0

Aryna Sabalenka has marched into her first final on Australian soil without conceding a set, denying Irina-Camelia Begu at the Adelaide International on Saturday.

After a slow start to her campaign, the second seed has quickly rediscovered the shot-making brilliance which carried her past the world’s top three women to a runner-up finish at last year’s WTA Finals.

As temperatures climbed above 30 degrees Celsius, the 24-year-old was pleased to wrap up the job in 78 minutes, restricting Begu to a 6-3, 6-2 scoreline.

“Yeah I’m happy with the level I played today, especially with (Begu’s) different game,” Sabalenka was quoted as saying by adelaideinternational.com.au. “She’s playing a little bit, like, a different style, so I’m super happy that I’m able to win this match.”

Sabalenka’s best finish last year was a runner-up showing at the WTA Finals to Caroline Garcia, having beaten No.1 Iga Swiatek, No.2 Ons Jabeur, and No.3 Jessica Pegula.

She will meet either top seed Jabeur or 18-year-old Czech Linda Noskova for the chance to collect her first title since beating Ash Barty in the Madrid final in May 2021.

“I mean either way it’s going to be a tough match,” Sabalenka. “Both of them are playing really great tennis this week. I saw a couple of matches of both.

“It’s going to be great but I’m really looking forward to this final.”

Guterres has strongly advocated issues for ‘Voice of South’: Spokesperson

0

The issues to be raised at next week’s virtual Voice of the South Summit announced by India, align with matters that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has been strongly advocating, according to his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric.

On Friday, India announced that the Voice of the South Summit with the expected participation of 120 countries will discuss global issues from the perspective of developing countries.

Dujarric said that on the issues on its agenda, Guterres “has been very vocal about and flagging how much the developing countries have been hurt by the conflict in Ukraine, by the unequal approach to solving the Covid crisis, debt relief and so on”.

India, which is the president of the G20, a group of major industrialized and emerging economies, is taking the initiative to animate the views of the other developing countries on urgent global issues before the group that dominates the global economy.

The inaugural meeting of heads of state or government presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 12 will be on the summit’s theme, “Voice of Global South –for Human-Centric Development”, and the concluding session for leaders on the next day will be on “Unity of Voice-Unity of Purpose”.

In between, the agenda has specialized breakout sessions for foreign, finance, health, education, commerce, and, energy ministers.

Announcing the summit, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said it is inspired by India’s philosophy of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ (The World Is a Family) and follows Modi’s vision of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas our Sabka Prayasa” (With All, Development for All, Hope for All and Endeavour for All).

Modi has pitched for leadership of the developed countries based on development and cooperation rather than on political polarization.

No chinks in Thalapathi Vijay’s marriage, say sources denying rumours of split

Tamil superstar Thalapathi Vijay’s fans, who were eagerly awaiting news about the upcoming January 12 release of his much-awaited movie ‘Varisu’, were instead struck by rumors that their hero’s marriage with his wife Sangeetha was heading for splitsville.

It all started with Vijay’s Wikipedia page reflecting his status as divorced in 2022. The rumors have started doing the rounds yet again, even as fans are celebrating the rushes of ‘Varisu’.

Sources close to the superstar, however, confirmed that all is fine between Vijay and Sangeetha, who have been married for 22 years. There is no basis for the rumors, they said.

The recent round of rumours started after Sangeetha skipped the baby shower of star director Atlee’s wife Priya. Sangeetha’s absence from the ‘Varisu’ music launch only added grist to the rumor mills.

Sources say that Sangeetha was with their children in the US when both events took place.

After the disappointment performance of ‘Beast’ at the box office, Vijay is back with ‘Vasrisu’, which has Rashmika Mandanna playing the lead role opposite the superstar.

Prakash Raj also has an important role in this movie directed by Vamshi Paidipally and produced by Dil Raju.

Experts predict India’s emergence as ‘third pole’, despite GDP growth worries

0

If any major middle-income country is truly outperforming in the coming decades, it’s the world’s soon-to-be third largest economy (and its largest democracy), India, Eurasia Group said in a report.

“In my view, 2023 will be remembered for India’s emergence as the third pole of the world,” wrote Shigesaburo Okumura, Editor-in-Chief of Nikkei Asia, in a recent article.

Another important factor not to be neglected is India. This year will likely be remembered for marking its emergence as the world’s most populous nation, Okumara wrote.

According to the UN, China’s population last year was 1.426 billion while India’s was 1.417 billion. In July, the UN forecasted that China’s population would fall in 2023 while India’s would surpass it.

By 2050, the UN expects India will have 1.6 billion residents and China 1.3 billion.

A growing working-age population is an important source of economic growth, so India’s emergence will give it new power in international politics, Okumara said.

Moreover, decoupling between the US and China and the rebuilding of technology supply chains to exclude China benefits India. Apple is building the iPhone 14s in India.

Natarajan Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons, has talked of plans to produce semiconductors in the subcontinent.

In March, India will host the plenary session of the Trilateral Commission for the first time. This year, it is also chairing the Group of 20, a role that will involve a leaders’ summit and many ministerial meetings. The Modi government will be eager to show leadership ahead of India’s own elections in 2024, Okumara wrote.

“The new year thus could mark the beginning of a tripolar world, involving the US, China, and India. New Delhi is undeniably on the rise,” Okumura concluded.

Challenges, however, are mounting for India’s economy with the GDP forecast at a half-century low.

Motilal Oswal Financial Services forecast in a note that after growing strongly for two consecutive years, India’s real GDP growth would decelerate to 5.2 percent YoY in FY24, while nominal GDP growth would weaken even sharply to 7-7.5 percent, led by easing inflation.

A combination of factors such as a slower global economy, fading pent-up demand, and normalizing base effects would contribute to slower real growth.

With an expected retail inflation print at just 4.3 percent and a mere 1 percent growth in the wholesale price index (WPI) in FY24, the GDP deflator could be around 2 percent, dragging down India’s nominal GDP growth to the lowest level compared to any year between the early 1970s and FY19 (that is, half-a-century pre-Covid period), the report said.

Such a slow growth rate would have some serious implications for the macroeconomy and financial markets.

“Overall, we believe that, unlike the past 12-15 months, the narrative will reverse in FY24. Inflation concerns will take a back seat and growth worries will resurface. This may be true not only for India but also for the entire global economy. At the same time, restrictive monetary policy will fail to boost financial markets. Accordingly, CY23 could be very painful,” the report said.

The revenue of listed companies is highly correlated with nominal GDP growth (and WPI inflation). In the case of single-digit nominal GDP growth, corporate sales growth is also expected to weaken from an average of >30 percent YoY in the past seven quarters to single digits in FY24.

With an expectation of weaker nominal GDP growth in FY24, we estimate India’s debt growth to also weaken. Thus, bank credit growth could also moderate from 15-16 percent in FY23 to 12 percent in FY24 with a downward bias, the report said.

As central banks across the world simultaneously hike interest rates in response to inflation, the world may be edging toward a global recession in 2023 and a string of financial crises in emerging market and developing economies that would do them lasting harm, according to
a comprehensive new study by the World Bank in September.

Several historical indicators of global recessions are already flashing warnings. The global economy is now in its steepest slowdown following a post-recession recovery since 1970.

Global consumer confidence has already suffered a much sharper decline than in the run-up to previous global recessions. The world’s three largest economies — United States, China, and the Eurozone — have been slowing sharply.

The experience of the 1970s, the policy responses to the 1975 global recession, the subsequent period of stagflation, and the global recession of 1982 illustrate the risk of allowing inflation to remain elevated for long while growth is weak.

The 1982 global recession coincided with the second-lowest growth rate in developing economies over the past five decades, second only to 2020. It triggered more than 40 debt crises and was followed by a decade of lost growth in many developing economies, the World Bank said.

India’s current account deficit expectedly swelled to a 37-quarter high of $36.4 billion (4.4 percent of GDP) in Q2 FY23 from $18.2 billion in Q1 FY23 (2.2 percent of GDP).

The resulting net balance of payments (BoP) position registered a deficit of $30.4 billion
(3.7 percent of GDP), its weakest since the 2008 global financial crisis, compared to a surplus of $4.6 billion in Q1 FY23, Acuite Ratings said.

Amid an uncertain geopolitical environment and slowing global growth, however, risks will remain on both current account balance and capital flows, it said.

With excessive demand supply disparities, bloated supply chain management, and battle against inflation weighing down on global economic growth, the New Year started on a gloomy outlook as IMF predicts global GDP growth topping at 2.7 percent, narrowly escaping recession, Nuvama Professional Clients Group said in a note.

The economy has been supported by sturdy domestic demand as indicated in GST collections and consumer spending.

However, the industrial output contracted by 4 percent YoY in October, the worst in over two years, hobbled by the drop in orders from western markets and weak investment at home, the note said.

Standard Chartered said in a report that the 2023 global macroeconomic backdrop is likely to be challenging given the heightened risk of a slowdown as lagged effects of monetary policy tightening leads to a weaker demand scenario and lower corporate earnings performance.

As the monetary policy rate cycle peaks amid receding inflationary pressures in the second half of the year, risk sentiment could improve with the growth outlook stabilizing.

“In our assessment,” the bank noted, “India’s growth-inflation dynamics is stable and better than its peers.”

The post-pandemic economic recovery cycle remains strong amid supportive government policies and a pick-up in investments. Further, the likely broadening of the rural economy’s recovery and of the service sectors is a strong tailwind, the note said.

25th Arabian Gulf football championship kicks off in Iraq

The 25th Arabian Gulf Cup 2023 kicked off in the southern Iraqi city of Basra.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani on Friday announced at the opening ceremony the start of the Gulf championship, saying the ceremony bears connotations of “fraternity between the Gulf Arab brothers”, reports media.

The opening match between Iraq and Oman ended in a draw without goals after the opening ceremony. The Iraqi national team is in Group A alongside Yemen, Saudi Arabia, and Oman, while the second group includes the soccer teams of Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.

Qatar hosted the 24th edition of the tournament in 2019, which was suspended thereafter due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The tournament, founded in 1970, returned to Iraq for the first time after the Iraqi capital Baghdad hosted its 5th edition in 1979.

Iraq hopes the ongoing Gulf Cup will be an opportunity to show the country’s return to regional activities.

Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi, FIFA President Gianni Infantino, and heads of football federations in the Gulf countries participated in the ceremony.

US announces over $3.75 bn in new military assistance to Ukraine

US President Joe Biden’s administration has announced more than $3.75 billion in new military assistance to Ukraine, Washington’s largest drawdown yet for the war-torn nation, the State Department said.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Department said the new assistance includes a $2.85 billion drawdown from stocks of the Department of Defense to be provided immediately to Ukraine and $225 million in Foreign Military Financing to build the long-term capacity and support modernization of the country’s military.

It also includes $682 million in Foreign Military Financing for European partners and allies to help incentivize and backfill donations of military equipment to Ukraine, the statement said.

This is the 29th drawdown of US arms and equipment for Ukraine since August 2021.

“This $2.85 billion drawdown will provide Ukraine with Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, artillery systems, armored personnel carriers, surface-to-air missiles, ammunition, and other items to support Ukraine as it bravely defends its people, its sovereignty, and its territorial integrity,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken was quoted as saying in the statement.

He further said the administration would work with Congress “to provide an additional $907 million of Foreign Military Financing under the Additional Ukraine Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2022”.

“Funds will support Ukraine and countries impacted by Russia’s war in Ukraine.”

The Secretary of State went on the say that “Russia alone could end this war today. Until it does so, this year, as in prior years, and for as long as it takes, we stand united with Ukraine”.

Responding to the announcement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the latest drawdown, saying it was an “awesome Christmas present for Ukraine”.

In his nightly address to the nation, the President on Friday said: “After I visited the US two weeks ago, over 20 stages in our diplomatic marathon took place. Today a new package of US defense aid for our country was announced, a powerful one!

“We’ll get Bradley vehicles — it’s exactly what’s needed. New guns, rounds, in particular, high-precision ones. New missiles. New drones. It’s timely and strong. We see the results of our talks.”

La Liga: Four things to look out for in Spain’s Matchday 16

0

Matchday 16 in La Liga comes after an intense week of Copa del Rey action, which will have given some sides confidence while leaving others with a few things to think about.

Here are the four things to look out for in Spain this weekend:

PROBLEMS FOR BARCA AGAINST ATLETICO MADRID

Although the return of defender Ronald Araujo after injury was good news for Barca coach Xavi Hernandez, that was Xavi’s only reason to be cheerful ahead of Sunday’s visit to play Atletico Madrid.

Barca needed extra time to get past the third tier, CF Intercity in midweek and after Araujo was taken off, they looked weak at the back. They also missed chances without Robert Lewandowski leading the line, with both Ferran Torres and Memphis Depay misfiring.

That’s important as Lewandowski is suspended for the Atletico game along with Jordi Alba and they are two key absences that weaken Xavi’s starting 11 as Barca looks to recapture their pre-World Cup form.

DIFFERENT MOODS AT ATLETICO

Atletico cruised into the last 16 of the Cup with a 2-0 win in Oviedo and coach Diego Simeone will have been pleased with another all-action display from Antoine Griezmann, who has gained in confidence after the World Cup, reports Xinhua.

Alvaro Morata continues to be a hard-running partner in attack and although Joao Felix’s future with Atletico looks far from certain, with interest from the Premier League, the departure of the talented but inconsistent Portuguese probably won’t upset Simeone too much, especially as youngster Pablo Barros is staking an ever-stronger claim for a regular starting place.

VILLARREAL TO TEST REAL MADRID

Villarreal seems to have steeled down under Quique Setien after a difficult start for the former Betis and Barca coach in the dugout. The World Cup break has allowed Setien to work with his players after the shock departure of Unai Emery, and it seems they are now adapting to the demands of his passing game, while the return of Gerard Moreno also boosts their effectiveness in attack.

Real Madrid has won their first two games back since the World Cup, but have not been convinced, needing a late penalty to help them past Valladolid and sneaking past lower division Cacereno 1-0 in the Cup this week.

Carlo Ancelotti complained about the pitch in Caceres, forgetting that less-than-perfect playing surfaces are the norm for the vast majority of footballers at this time of year.

Presumably, the pitch at the recently reformed Estadio de la Ceramica will be more to his liking.

REAL SOCIEDAD TO KEEP UP CHALLENGE IN ALMERIA

Real Sociedad eased into the last 16 of the Cup with a 1-0 win against Logrones in midweek, with coach Imanol Alguacil resting several first-team regulars.

Two players who didn’t rest were midfielders Mikel Merino and Brais Mendez, with Mendes in outstanding form since his move from Celta over the summer.

The depth of their squad and the excellent football they are currently playing implies the side from San Sebastian is the team that looks most likely to get close to Barca and Real Madrid in the title race, although they have started well and faded slightly in their last two campaigns.

With Mikel Oyarzabal on his way back to full fitness, the side from San Sebastian should have enough to take three points from their visit to Almeria.

Sania Mirza to retire at next month’s Dubai Tennis Championships

0

Former doubles No.1 Sania Mirza has confirmed her plans to retire from professional tennis at Dubai Tennis Championships, a WTA 1000 event, which begins on February 19.

The 36-year-old Mirza initially intended to hang up her racquet at the end of last season, but an elbow injury ruled her out of the US Open and forced her to end 2022 as early as August.

A six-time major champion — three in doubles and three in mixed doubles — Mirza has signed up to compete in this month’s Australian Open alongside Kazakhstan’s Anna Danilina.

The India tennis star who has been living in Dubai for more than a decade will then look to bid farewell to the sport in the Emirates, where she has competed for many years in front of her massive fanbase.

Mirza has been dealing with a lingering calf problem but is hoping it won’t stop her from saying her goodbyes on the match court.

“I was going to stop right after the WTA Finals because we were going to make the WTA Finals, but I tore my tendon in my elbow right before the US Open so I had to pull out of everything,” Sania told wtatennis.com.

“And honestly, the person that I am, I like to do things on my own terms. So I don’t want to be forced out by injury. So I’ve been training. The plan is to try and retire in Dubai during the Dubai Duty-Free Tennis Championships,” she added.

In a recent interview with “Curly Tales Middle East,” Sania explained why she believed now was the right time.

“I’m 36, and honestly my body is beaten, that is the main reason for it. And I really don’t have the capacity in my mind to emotionally push that much anymore. I turned pro in 2003. Priorities change, and now my priority is not to push my body to the limit every single day,” the Indian said.

A mother to a 4-year-old boy Izhaan, Mirza has recently launched a tennis academy in Dubai, which already operates in three locations and will venture into two more neighborhoods in the coming weeks.

“We’re trying to spread and bring tennis to people’s homes, and that’s really the plan,” said Sania, who peaked at No.27 in the world in singles.

“I feel like why don’t we have players coming out of the UAE when you have money, the infrastructure, everything, but you don’t have the players? There’s a problem somewhere so we’ve got to tap on it, whatever it may be, and try to be part of a solution.

For me it’s important to share my experience in the places that I live in, that’s why I have one in Hyderabad [since 2013] and one in Dubai,” she concluded.
