Cameo by Malayalam superstar Mohanlal in Rajinikanth movie ‘Jailer’

Malayalam superstar Mohanlal will be seen in a cameo in ‘Jailer’, the upcoming movie of the South Indian megastar, Rajinikanth.

This is the first time that Mohanlal and Rajinikanth are sharing screen space in their more than three-decade-long, almost parallel movie careers. The movie is slated for a global release on April 14.

Mohanlal, according to sources in team ‘Jailer’, has already signed up for the movie and will shoot for two days. The star is likely to be on the sets of ‘Jailer’ on January 8 and 9.

Mohanlal is likely to play an underworld don in the movie. Rajinikanth essays the title role and most of the movie has been shot inside a prison.

Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, who has helmed some of Rajinikanth’s best-known hits, ‘Jailer’ has been produced by Kalanidhi Maran of Sun Films.

Kannada superstar Shiva Rajkumar is making his Tamil debut with ‘Jailer’. Yogi Babu as well as Vinayakan are also donning major roles.

Tamil actress Trisha Krishnan, most recently seen in Mani Ratnam’s blockbuster historical drama, ‘Ponniyin Selvan-1’, has an important part in the movie. Another familiar face is Ramya Krishnan of ‘Baahubali’ fame.

Music sensation Anirudh Ravichander is composing the movie’s score. This is his third movie collaboration with Rajinikanth after ‘Petta’ and ‘Darbar’.

Indian economy to grow at 7% in FY23, 6% in FY24

0

The Indian economy is likely to grow at a rate of 7 per cent in the current fiscal, against the 8.7 per cent growth in 2021-22, the National Statistical Office (NSO) said on Friday.

Responding to NSO’s forecast, economists are of the view that the GDP growth to moderate to 6 – 6.1 percent in FY24.

The NSO, while releasing the first advance estimates of National Income for 2022-23, said that the “Real GDP (gross domestic product) or GDP at Constant (2011-12) Prices in the year 2022-23 is estimated at Rs 157.60 lakh crore, as against the Provisional Estimate of GDP for the year 2021-22 of Rs 147.36 lakh crore, released on May 31, 2022. The growth in real GDP during 2022-23 is estimated at 7 percent as compared to 8.7 percent in 2021-22”.

In December 2022, the RBI had scaled down the GDP growth forecast to 6.8 per cent for the current fiscal from the earlier estimate of 7 per cent, mainly due to prevailing geopolitical tensions and global tightening.

Reacting to the GDP projections Rajani Sinha, Chief Economist, CARE Ratings told IANS: “India’s economy grew at 7 percent in FY23 supported by the services sector. As expected, manufacturing sector, which has been under pressure due to high input costs, recorded weak growth. On the expenditure side, consumption growth and investment growth showed resilience aided by post-pandemic normalization in economic activities and strong pent-up demand. Capex boost by the government has also been supportive of growth. With global growth slowing, there was a widening of net exports that ate into overall GDP growth.”

Looking ahead, with challenges looming on the external front, India’s export growth is likely to moderate in FY24. The manufacturing sector will benefit from moderation in commodity prices but will feel the pain of lower external demand. In the services sector, there could be some fading of pent-up demand that we saw in FY23, Sinha said.

While the government will continue its focus on capital spending, the main challenge will be a durable pick-up in private investment amid rising borrowing costs, demand uncertainty, and global slowdown, she added.

“Considering the headwinds arising on the external front and its possible spillovers on the Indian economy, we expect the GDP growth to moderate to around 6.1 percent in FY24,” Sinha said.

Similarly, another credit rating agency CRISIL projects real GDP growth to slow to 6 percent next fiscal, with risks tilted to the downside.

According to CRISIL, a deceleration is largely anticipated in the second half of the current year due to the base effect as well as the adverse impact of slowing global growth.

Recovery in household consumption and catch-up in contact-based services is expected to support growth this fiscal.

The slowdown is expected to intensify next year, as global growth falls further.

S&P Global expects the US to swing from a GDP growth of 1.8 percent in 2022 to a contraction of 0.1 percent in 2023, and the European Union from 3.3 percent to 0 percent, driven by tight financial conditions induced by rate hikes of the US Federal Reserve, and the European energy crisis, CRISIL said.

“While domestic demand has stayed relatively resilient so far, it would be tested next year by weakening industrial activity. It will feel the pressure from increasing transmission of interest rate hikes to consumers as well, and as the catch-up in contact-based services fades,” CRISIL added.

Be that as it may, in a significant projection, the output of the manufacturing sector is estimated to slide down to 1.6 percent as against a growth of 9.9 percent in 2021-22, the first advance estimate noted further.

Private final consumption expenditure, a yardstick for demand, is projected to rise 7.7 percent in 2022-23 from a year ago.

Gross fixed capital formation, a measure of investment, is estimated to rise around 11.5 percent in the current fiscal, the data said.

Electricity sector growth in the current fiscal is estimated at 9 percent, compared to 7.5 percent in the previous fiscal.

Trade and hotels estimated growth is 13.7 percent, up from last fiscal’s 11.1 percent. For finance and real estate, the estimated growth is 6.4 percent from last fiscal’s 4.2 percent.

Estimated growth for the agriculture sector is pegged at 3.5 percent compared to the previous fiscal’s 3 percent.

Mining growth estimation is at 2.4 percent, up from last year’s 11.5 percent.

Zoom announces human avatars to its meeting app

0

Video conferencing platform Zoom has announced human avatars in its meeting app, which will let users appear as a cartoon version of themselves.

The company added avatars to its collection of filters, to make meetings more flexible and fun.

“With numerous personalization combinations, you can display the ‘virtual you’ in a way that is original and fun! Avatars mirror your movements and facial expressions, allowing you to present yourself dynamically without needing to be on video and providing a more engaging alternative to static profile pictures to inject more fun and energy into your meetings,” Zoom said in a blog post.

Avatars are currently available in beta to all Zoom users globally.

The company said as they progress in beta, they will continue to expand with additional facial features, hairstyles, and more customization options when creating your human avatar.

Meanwhile, Zoom also announced Meeting templates, threaded messages and in-meeting chat experience, and Q&A in meetings in other features.

With Meeting templates, users can now create, save, and choose from custom meeting templates, which automatically apply the right settings for their needs.

“Using Meeting Templates will help you feel comfortable knowing you’ve got the right type of meeting scheduled, focus on your content, rather than spend time toggling settings,” said the blog post.

Moreover, to enhance the in-meeting chat experience, later this month the company will be releasing threaded messages and reactions, which will allow meeting participants to create message threads and consolidate emoji reactions in the in-meeting chat.

This feature will help organize the chat messages and clarify which messages participants are responding to.

Further, the Q&A feature will allow meeting hosts to stay more organized by having one place to view and answer questions.

“Now you won’t have to sift through meeting chats to make sure you’ve answered all of the questions. From the Q&A pop-out, hosts and co-hosts can view, answer, or dismiss questions,” the blog post mentioned.

Q&A in meetings is available in Zoom One Business, Zoom One Business Plus, Zoom One Enterprise, and Zoom One Enterprise Plus accounts.

ISL 2022-23: Playoffs challenge on the line as Chennaiyin FC face Jamshedpur FC

0

Jamshedpur FC will host Chennaiyin FC in an Indian Super League (ISL) 2022-23 match at the JRD Tata Sports Complex, here on Saturday, having the playoffs challenge on the line.

Jamshedpur FC currently sits in 10th place with five points on board, whereas Chennaiyin FC sits in 7th place with 14 points on the board and a chance to challenge both FC Goa and Odisha FC for their playoff spots after both teams have dropped points in recent weeks.

Chennaiyin has a game in hand against both of these teams and two wins in their next two games could propel them straight into the playoffs zone on the standings.

However, both sides in this fixture are coming in on the back of losses. Jamshedpur FC lost 3-1 in Kochi to an inspired Kerala Blasters side, and Chennaiyin FC toiled hard before succumbing to a 2-1 loss to in-form Mumbai City FC.

Despite sticking to the back-three formation that earned them a point against FC Goa two weeks ago, Jamshedpur FC could not hold Kerala Blasters’ high-press approach last week. It remains to be seen if their head coach Aidy Boothroyd will stick with this formation in the upcoming game or tinker further.

Boothroyd suggested that his side needs to start games a lot better.

“It’s clearly something that will make a big difference to our points and, therefore, our place in the table if we stop conceding these ridiculous goals at key times in a match,” the coach said in the pre-match press conference.

Chennaiyin FC hasn’t won a game since their dominant 7-3 win over NorthEast United FC on December 10. Abdelnasser El Khayati was in supreme form on the day. He scored a hat-trick in that match and is still leading the ISL goalscoring charts, alongside Cleiton Silva and Lallianzuala Chhangte, with seven goals. With him on the side, Chennaiyin FC poses a threat to every team in the league.

Chennaiyin FC head coach Thomas Brdaric played down the expectations when asked about top-4 and title-winning ambitions in his pre-match press conference.

“We came here to develop, and we start from zero – from the beginning. We build a team, we develop a team, and we are competitive,” Brdaric said.

The two sides have faced each other 11 times. Chennaiyin FC holds the upper hand in the head-to-head meetings with five wins, three losses, and three draws. When the two sides met in November, Chennaiyin FC won 3-1. Peter Sliskovic, Vincy Barretto, and El Khayati were on target for Chennaiyin FC, whereas Ishan Pandita scored the only goal for Jamshedpur FC.

‘To many more such awards’: Ram Charan’s best wishes for Rajamouli

Before leaving for Los Angeles to attend the Golden Globes evening in Los Angeles on January 11, Tollywood star Ram Charan reacted to S.S. Rajamouli’s son posting a video of the ‘RRR’ helmer accepting the Best Director award at the prestigious New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC) gala recently.

Congratulating Rajamouli for his achievement, the ‘RRR’ star tweeted on Friday: “And to many more such awards!! Congratulations @ssrajamouli Garu”.

All eyes are now on the Golden Globe Awards night, where the movie is a frontrunner in two categories – Best Picture (Non-English Language) and Best Original Song for ‘Naatu Naatu’.

The movie starring Ram Charan and NTR Jr has shown no signs of slowing even after almost a year of its theatrical release. And it has left its imprint on the box office of the US and Japan in the recent months.

‘RRR’, incidentally, is the second movie collaboration of Rajamouli and Ram Charan. They had previously worked on the hit Telugu movie ‘Magadheera’.

US House adjourns with no Speaker elected for 1st time in 164 years

0

The US House of Representatives has again adjourned for a third day without electing a new Speaker even after 11 votes, becoming the longest contest to select a person to take the gavel in 164 years.

The House will not convene on Friday at noon, the second anniversary of the 2021 Capitol riot, reports Xinhua news agency.

Kevin McCarthy from California, the House Republican leader since 2019, fell short of the necessary votes to take the gavel in five more rounds of voting Thursday afternoon.

The House has voted 11 times since the 118th Congress convened on Tuesday, making it the longest speaker contest in 164 years.

Not since 1860, when the US’ union was fraying over the issue of slavery, has the lower chamber of Congress voted so many times to pick a Speaker.

Back then it took 44 rounds of ballots. A group of 20 hard-line Republican lawmakers is refusing to give the California Congressman the necessary 218 votes.

The 435-seat lower chamber, where Republicans have a slim majority over Democrats, is unable to conduct any legislative business until a speaker is elected.

McCarthy has the support of most House Republicans and former President Donald Trump but the 20 hardliners have pressured him to decentralize the Speaker’s power.

All House Democrats have voted for Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, a New York Democrat, to be Speaker in the election.

Though it’s unlikely for Jeffries to attain the position, he is set to become the first African-American lawmaker to lead a party in either chamber of Congress.

In the November 8, 2022, midterm elections, Republicans won the House by a slender margin of 222 to 212 in the 435-seat chamber, while Democrats retained control of the Senate.

Earlier on Thursday, McCarthy was defiantly the face of the stiff headwinds, saying that he will continue to face opposition until he reaches a deal with his detractors.

“It’s all going to be this way until an agreement comes. It’s easier if we’re able to all get an agreement together,” he told Media.

Asked about the point he would make a realization that the outcome won’t change, McCarthy told the network: “After I win.”

But one of the 20 dissidents, Ralph Norman of South Carolina, told the BBC that he simply does not trust McCarthy.

The Congressman said McCarthy’s team had threatened political retaliation against them if they did not fall in line, in the weeks leading up to this deadlock.

“We were going to be thrown off committees… We’re going to lose every privilege we had. And we’d basically told them, ‘If we can’t ask questions, if we can’t vet out the most powerful person that we’re getting ready to put in office, then we’re out’,” he told the BBC.

The Speaker of the House is the second in line to the presidency, after Vice President Kamala Harris.

They set the agenda in the House, and no legislative business can be conducted there without them.

Temple Trust to finalise design of Lord Ram statue

0

Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Tirath Kshetra Trust has asked top sculptors in the country to send their models for the statue of Ram Lalla (Lord Ram in the form of a child) for the under-construction Ram temple in Ayodhya.

The Trust will select one of the models for the Ram Mandir.

According to the trust members, well-known sculptor Sudarshan Sahoo and Vasudev Kamath of Odisha, K.V. Maniya of Karnataka, and Shashtrayajya Deulkar of Pune will be sending models of the statue, measuring nine to 12 inches.

Champat Rai, general secretary of the Trust, said, “Stones from Maharashtra, Odisha, and Karnataka have been selected for preparing the idol of Ram Lalla. The Trust will approve the stones after finalizing the model of the deity.”

He said that the height of the statue will be around 8.5 feet to nine feet so that the sun’s rays could fall on the deity.

The Trust has roped in top institutes of the country having expertise in architecture and building design to model the Ram temple sanctum sanctorum in such a way that the sunlight falls on the forehead of Ram Lalla on every Ram Navmi, on the birth of the deity at 12 noon.

A team of experts from CSIR-CBRI of Roorkee, Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Pune, and renowned temple architects has been constituted for the purpose.

TikTok now allows users to find specific parts of videos

0

Chinese short-form video-making app TikTok has quietly added a ‘video-scrubbing thumbnail’ feature to its platform that allows users to easily find a specific part of a longer video.

This feature was first spotted by social media consultant Matt Navarra, reports TechCrunch.

As the feature starts to roll out this week, it might not be available for every user.

It seems that the video-scrubbing thumbnails are currently only available for newer uploads, as they are not appearing on older videos.

Since the platform rolled out the feature for users to upload 10-minute videos up last year, it has been working to improve the viewing experience for the users, the report said.

Meanwhile, last month, the platform announced that it had expanded its ‘audience controls’ feature to allow creators to restrict their short-form videos to adult viewers.

According to the company, the platform always had strict policies prohibiting nudity, sexual activity, and sexually explicit content, and “over 40,000 dedicated trust and safety professionals work to develop and enforce these policies and build processes and technologies to detect, remove or restrict violative content at scale.”

Now connect to WhatsApp via proxy servers if denied the right

0

Meta-owned WhatsApp on Thursday launched proxy support for users all over the world, like millions of people in Iran and elsewhere who continue to be denied the right to communicate freely and privately.

Choosing a proxy will enable them to connect to WhatsApp through servers set up by volunteers and organizations around the world dedicated to helping people communicate freely.

“We are making it easier for anyone to connect to WhatsApp using a proxy. So when a connection to WhatsApp is blocked, people have the power to restore access,” said Will Cathcart, Head of WhatsApp.

The company said that connecting via proxy maintains the high level of privacy and security that WhatsApp provides.

“Your personal messages will still be protected by end-to-end encryption – ensuring they stay between you and the person you’re communicating with and are not visible to anyone in between, not the proxy servers, WhatsApp, or Meta,” it said in a blog post.

This option is now available in the settings menu for everyone running the latest version of WhatsApp.

Status quo in BJP’s organisational structure likely, Nadda to continue as President

The Bharatiya Janata Party is likely to keep its organizational structure unchanged in view of the approaching 2024 Lok Sabha elections and the number of Assembly elections this year, party sources said.

“In view of the Lok Sabha elections and the Assembly elections to be held in the coming days, the BJP has decided that national President J.P Nadda will get an extension and the state Presidents will not be changed unless there is a demand for a replacement,” a source said.

“And there will be no change in the organization until it is more necessary,” the source added.

A formal announcement in this regard after the national office-bearers meeting on January 16. Nadda’s three-year term as the party President ends later this month.

Assembly elections are going to be held in Madhya Pradesh, Tripura, Karnataka, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Rajasthan, Telangana, and Chhattisgarh this year. All except Congress-ruled Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, and BRS-ruled Telangana, the BJP or its allies are in power.

Adelaide International 1: Jabeur advances to quarters with win over Cirstea

0

World No.2 Ons Jabeur got her 2023 season underway with a win over Sorana Cirstea 7-6(3), 6-1 to reach the quarterfinals of the Adelaide International 1, here on Thursday.

Jabeur, who got a bye in her opening match, will face Marta Kostyuk in the quarterfinals.

“Very happy, great start for me. Obviously, I wanted to win the first set much easier, but I will have to learn from it and keep more energy,” said top seed Jabeur.

The Tunisian showed both flashes of brilliance and understandable rust in her first match of the season.

Jabeur broke twice in the opening set but was pegged back due to a string of errors. Imbued with confidence, Cirstea frustrated Jabeur with her flat hitting to force a tiebreak. There, Jabeur dialed in to build a quick 4-0 lead and seal the opening set.

“Happy that I stayed calm, not angry that I missed the two breaks that I was up with and keeping my calm to play my game. That tiebreak helped me play a better second set,” she said.

With the opening set in hand, Jabeur settled in the second set and sealed her first win of the year in 77 minutes, hitting a dazzling array of winners that will no doubt find themselves on the shortlist for January’s Shot of the Month.

‘RRR’ is the most-favoured international film on the US awards circuit today

With 32 critics’ and industry prizes handed out thus far, and Oscar nomination voting now less than 10 days away, ‘RRR’ is definitely in the reckoning on a slate of hopefuls where Steven Spielberg is one of the leading contenders with his semi-autobiographical ‘The Fabelmans’ and Cate Blanchett is locked in a riveting battle of nerves with Michelle Yeoh.

And the awards season is very much around, with the Palm Springs Film Festival kicking off later this week and the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards on their way to marking their first televised ceremonies of the season.

To find out who stands where, we turned to ‘Variety’, which has been tracking where the awards have gone so far. S.S. Rajamouli’s ‘RRR’, starring Ram Charan and Jr NTR, has won the most awards for Best International Feature (nine, compared with seven for the Korean Decision to Leave’, which was won by Park Chan-wook the Cannes 2022 Best Director award) and Best Original Score (by M.M. Keeravani, a.k.a. M.M. Kreem to Hindi cinema watchers) — four nods, behind the five, won by ‘The Batman’ and ‘Babylon’ and above the three of ‘Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio’.

The irony, though, is that ‘RRR’ is not India’s official entry — it is Pan Nalin’s Gujarati film, ‘Chhello Show’ (Last Show) — but the Tollywood blockbuster’s American promoters, Variance Films, has included it in all award categories.

The leaders in the other main categories are Best Picture: ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ – 16.

Best Director: The Daniels (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) for ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ – 16

Best Actor: Colin Farrell (‘The Banshees of Inisherin’) – 16; Brendan Fraser (‘The Whale’) – nine

Best Actress: Michelle Yeoh (‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’) – 15; Cate Blanchett (‘Tar’) – 11. Best Supporting Actor: Ke Huy Quan (‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’) – 24

Best Supporting Actress: Kerry Condon (‘The Banshees of Inisherin’) – nine. Original Screenplay: ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ – 15; ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ – 10. Animated Feature: ‘Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio’ – 14; ‘Marcel the Shell with Shoes On’ – eight

Cinematography: ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ – 15, Film Editing: ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ – 10

The Oscars throw up real surprises every season and this year is not going to be any different. But this list of the leaders is indicative of how the people whose votes will determine who will go home with the prized statuette, are thinking today.

High-speed 5G services rolled out in Odisha

0

Union Minister for Communication and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw along with Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Thursday launched high-speed fifth-generation (5G) telecom services in Odisha.

Bhubaneswar and Cuttack became the first cities in Odisha to get 5G services starting Thursday. Earlier, during its nationwide launch, 5G services were provided to President Droupadi Murmu’s village Pahadpur in the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha.

The 5G services have been unveiled in Odisha in the first phase of the national launch, much before the first phase deadline of March 2023, Vaishnaw said.

The Narendra Modi-led government has allocated Rs 5600 crore for setting up of about 5,000 telecom towers to connect about 7,000 villages of Odisha, the minister said.

“We have set a target to cover the entire state within the next two years,” Vaishnaw said, adding that 5,000 towers will be set up within the next 18 months.

It means by August 2024, all the villages of Odisha will have telecom connectivity.

Vaishnaw also said that the Modi government has allocated Rs 1,080 crore to provide broadband connectivity to every village and school in Odisha.

He added that Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has informed him that an independent course on 5G will be introduced in the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) curriculum soon.

For the revival of BSNL, the Centre has allocated Rs 1.64 lakh crore. BSNL will start rolling out 5G service by 2024, he added.

For the development of the IT industry in Odisha, software technology parks will be set up at eight locations — Bhubaneswar, Rourkela, Berhampur, Balasore, Angul, Koraput, Jajpur and Sambalpur — by December 2023, Vaishnaw announced.

Pradhan said that the 5G service will act as a game-changer for Odisha, as it will help the education, health, and telemedicine sectors tremendously.

On the occasion, Reliance Jio and Bhubaneswar-based SOA University also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on building a 5G lab and collaborating on relevant use cases.

The Union ministers also dedicated 100 telecom towers set up in different places across the state to the people.

On the other hand, BJD MP and party spokesperson Amar Patnaik said, “When there isn’t even access to telephone service, talking of 4G or 5G service being introduced in the state is only tall talk. It will further exacerbate the digital inequity within the state.”

Out of the 51,311 villages in the state, 11,000 villages do not have mobile connectivity. Out of these, 10,000 villages are in the Maoist-affected areas, he said.

While welcoming the introduction of 5G services, the BJD leader said the Centre should concentrate more on improving teledensity and internet connectivity in the rural areas of Odisha, particularly in the 10 districts where most of the people are tribals and deserve the services the most.

Nadella meets PM Modi, discusses how India Stack can transform world

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s digital vision and all the programs that have been launched around that vision are creating amazing digital public goods, which are the greatest contributions to the world, Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella said on Thursday.

Nadella, who met Modi in New Delhi on Wednesday, described his meeting as an “insightful” one, especially around the India Stack.

India Stack is a set of open APIs and digital public goods that aim to unlock the economic primitives of identity, data, and payments at the population scale.

“I had an opportunity to have a conversation with PM Modi about this at length. The magic of India Stack is unlike anything that I have seen anywhere in the world, which is perhaps the greatest contribution that India can make to the world,” Nadella told the gathering here during Microsoft’s ‘Future Ready Technology Summit’.

The India Stack is widening access to financial services in an economy where retail transactions are heavily cash-based.

Payments through the UPI interface touched a record high of Rs 12.82 lakh crore in December 2022, registering 782 crore transactions.

The work in the field of digital public goods is amazing and it is “inspiring to see the deep focus on sustainable and inclusive economic growth led by digital transformation” in the country, he added.

After meeting PM Modi, Nadella tweeted that “we’re looking forward to helping India realize the Digital India vision and be a light for the world”.

Nadella was in the country on a four-day visit, and also met External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in the capital on Wednesday.
