SRK to Deepika on b’day: ‘Always proud and wishing for you to scale new heights’

On Deepika Padukone’s 37th birthday on Thursday, her ‘Pathaan’ co-star Shah Rukh Khan penned a note of appreciation for the actress and said that he is “proud and always wishing her to scale new heights”.

Shah Rukh took to Instagram, where he shared a new look at Deepika’s character from their film and wrote: “To my dearest @deepikapadukone – how you have evolved to own the screen in every avatar possible! Always proud and always wishing for you to scale new heights happy birthday lots of love #Pathaan releasing in theatres on 25th Jan in Hindi, Tamil & Telugu.”

This will be the fourth time SRK and Deepika will be seen sharing screen space together. The two have previously worked in films such as ‘Om Shanti Om’, ‘Chennai Express’ and ‘Happy New Year’.

‘Pathaan’ presents the story of an Indian spy who can get into any system or circle given his stealth and chameleon abilities to merge with the world that he resides in.

The film is the first of SRK’s three films after a hiatus of over four years for the actor. Earlier, he was seen in the 2018 movie ‘Zero’ which tanked badly at the box office.

‘Pathaan’, produced by India’s premier studio conglomerate Yash Raj Films, will drop in theatres on January 25.

James Wan already planning to turn horror movie ‘M3GAN’ into franchise

Filmmaker James Wan is already contemplating an ‘M3GAN’ sequel.

The 45-year-old filmmaker is a producer for the new sci-fi horror flick about a robotic doll that becomes extremely protective of a child and he explained how the flick could develop into a franchise, reports aceshowbiz.com.

“What I will say to that is, whether it’s The Conjuring Universe, or ‘Saw’, or ‘Malignant’, or ‘M3GAN’ here, we like to think of a bigger world,” James told Collider.

“For me, it’s about creating the world, and knowing who the characters are, where the story could potentially go, and then building this bigger world, and then going into that and going, ‘Okay, I’m telling this particular story, but I know other stuff that’s going on.’ ”

The director added, “So if we’re fortunate enough to have sequels, then we have an idea of where we want to go.”

‘M3GAN’ helmer Gerard Johnstone recently revealed how the movie, which stars Allison Williams and Violet McGraw, had to have reshoots to get a PG-13 age rating.

The director told Total Film magazine, “Making it PG-13 was something that happened after the fact, but it was always close to PG-13 anyway.”

“It seemed kind of a mistake not to embrace it. I even remember thinking early on, ‘This could be PG-13, and some of my favorite films like ‘Drag Me to Hell’ are PG-13.’ So we made the decision to go PG-13 and actually reshot a couple of things.”

Johnstone claimed that the reshoots actually enhanced the quality of the picture. He said, “What I was really stoked about is that when we reshot those scenes, they were more effective. It’s like, ‘Yes, you do have to cut away at certain times’, but it’s fun having to rely on sound and suggestion so much.”

Padma Lakshmi hits back after being accused of making daughter ‘uncomfortable’ with her breasts

Indian-American model, TV host, author, and activist Padma Lakshmi hits back at a follower, who criticized her fun video, which was shared on her Instagram account, by her daughter Krishna.

The clip saw the celebrity chef cooking, with her daughter filming her. Her daughter, meanwhile, tried to cover her mom’s chest from the camera’s view as she put one of her hands in front of it, reports aceshowbiz.com.

When Padma asked her daughter what she was doing, the little girl said that she was “censoring”.

To that, Padma jokingly replied, “Censoring my boobs? You ate off those boobs for a good year-and-a-half.”

Further poking fun at the situation, the 52-year-old star wrote in the caption: “Little hands: ‘cover your boobs’. Also, Little hands: *zooms in on boobs*.”

Fans in the comments section mostly praised Padma for the witty remarks to Krishna.

However, some others apparently took issue with her response. “As a mom of four daughters, there’s a time and a place and when it starts making our daughters uncomfortable because we are being objectified, time to take notice,” one person said.

Catching wind of the comment, Padma immediately replied to the individual. “First if all it’s a JOKE,” she defended herself.

“And my daughter isn’t uncomfortable with me or my boobs or my posts, nor does she read these comments unless I show her because she isn’t on social media.”

“It’s really not that serious folks,” the Bravo star stressed.

The food writer later told the person that her daughter is not on social media because “she has her studies to attend to”.

Padma isn’t strange to mocking Internet users’ comments on her. Back in December, the “Spices & Herbs” author took to TikTok to share a video of her using a filter that made it look like she was drifting in a boat.

“On my way to put on a bra because user75929 told me to,” she hilariously captioned the clip.

Sunak pledges to halve inflation, boost economy

0

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has pledged to halve inflation and boost the country’s economy in his first major speech of the new year.

In his speech on Wednesday, Sunak made five pledges — to halve inflation; grow the economy; reduce national debt; cut hospital waiting lists; and stop illegal migrant boats crossing the English Channel, reports Xinhua news agency.

Calling these the “people’s priorities”, Sunak vowed to “work night and day” to deliver for the British people.

He said his government will halve inflation this year to reduce the cost of living and give people financial security.

According to official figures, the UK’s annual inflation dipped to 10.7 percent in November 2022 from 11.1 percent the previous month.

Last November, the Bank of England (BoE) said it expected the country’s consumer price index (CPI) to drop sharply after the middle of 2023.

To grow the economy, Sunak pledged to create better-paid jobs and opportunities across the country. However, this may prove to be an uphill task.

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the UK’s gross domestic product (GDP) fell by 0.3 percent in the third quarter of 2022.

The BoE also warned that the country’s economy is bound to remain in recession throughout 2023 and the first half of 2024, and GDP will recover only gradually thereafter.

Reducing public debt has always been a priority for Sunak’s fiscal policies since he took office in late October.

In his Autumn Statement, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announced a package of tax hikes and spending cuts in a bid to improve the public finances and restore the country’s economic credibility.

In Sunak’s fourth pledge, he promised that the waiting lists of the National Health Service (NHS) will fall and people will get the care they need more quickly.

According to the British Medical Association (BMA), in October 2022, a record 7.21 million people were waiting for medical treatment in the UK.

The Prime Minister also vowed to pass new laws to curb the arrival of migrants in “small boats”, on the country’s coast.

“If you come to this country illegally, you are detained and swiftly removed,” he said.

The Times newspaper cited official figures as showing that a record 45,756 migrants crossed the English Channel to the UK last year.

In his speech, Sunak also said that he plans to ensure that all pupils in the country study maths until the age of 18.

He said the UK was one of the few countries in the world not to require children to study maths in some form up to that age.

“Improving education is the closest thing to a silver bullet there is. It is the best economic policy, the best social policy, the best moral policy,” the Prime Minister added.

Twitter’s advanced search filters for iOS coming soon

0

Twitter is finally bringing a much sought-after feature that will help users find specific tweets and profiles by filtering based on date, user, retweet count, hashtags, and more.

According to social media analyst Matt Navarra, Twitter’s advanced search filters for smartphone users are “coming soon”.

“Twitter Advanced Search feature on iOS is coming soon,” he tweeted on Thursday.

“You can also use Twitter Advanced Search on iOS to search another user’s profile,” he posted.

As he mentioned, the new search feature will arrive first on iPhones.

CEO Elon Musk complained about Twitter’s search feature within a week of taking control of the micro-blogging platform.

“Fixing search is a high priority,” he had tweeted on November 6 last year.

“Search within Twitter reminds me of Infoseek in a98! That will also get a lot better pronto,” Musk added.

According to TechCrunch, on the web, you have to type in your search term, then click the three-dot menu to the right of the search bar to open up the advanced search.

“On mobile, this wasn’t even an option until now, when this feature release seems to be imminent,” said the report.

It’s still not clear when this advanced search feature will roll out.

AUS v SA: Usman Khawaja becomes fourth batter to score three successive tons at SCG

0

Continuing with his tremendous form, Australia opener Usman Khawaja on Thursday stormed to his 12th Test century on the second day of the third and final Test against South Africa, joining an elite list of batters who have scored three consecutive centuries at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Khawaja is the fourth Australian and seventh overall to achieve the feat of scoring four or more consecutive centuries at SCG joining a group that includes India’s, VVS Laxman.

Khawaja, who was batting on 54 when rain stopped play on Day 1 with the hosts at 147/2 in 47 overs, continued his rich vein of form in the last 12 months which has seen him reach the three-figure mark on five occasions as he scored his century when he pulled Kagiso Rabada for two runs in the morning session on Thursday. Khawaja took 206 balls to reach the three-figure mark and struck eight fours and one six in the process.

Khawaja thus became the fourth player to score three consecutive hundreds at the SCG, following hundreds in both innings of the Ashes Test against England at the SCG around the same time last year. The three players who have done this earlier are Australian duo Wally Hammond and Doug Walters and India’s Laxman.

Khawaja is the only Australian to average more than 100 in Sydney Tests (minimum five innings), something only England’s Wally Hammond (161.60) and India’s Sachin Tendulkar (157) have achieved in the ground’s storied history, informed a report in the cricket.com.au website.

He also becomes the seventh player to have scored four or more Test hundreds in Sydney, a list that includes his opening partner David Warner.

“There’s a lot of special feelings here,” Khawaja told Fox Cricket at the lunch break. “I grew up just up the road. My family is here watching and my new family – with (wife) Rachel, and our two kids – are here.

“It’s just a nice feeling, I’ve got friends in the crowd. It’s where I grew up so it’s always an honor to score runs here,” Khawaja was quoted as saying by Australian media outlets.

At drinks in the second session on Day 2, Khawaja was batting on 142 with Steve Smith on 92 as Australia reached 334/2 in 103 overs.

Israel detects bird flu outbreaks at 2 more turkey farms

0

Israel said that it has detected pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza outbreaks at two more turkey farms in the country.

The first outbreak occurred among 25,000 turkeys in three coop structures at a farm in the village of Magal near the barrier wall built by Israel in the occupied West Bank, said the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in a statement.

A second outbreak was detected among 25,000 turkeys for breeding in three coop structures in the southern village of Be’er Tuvia, Xinhua news agency quoted the Ministry as saying.

With the latest two turkey farms, bird flu outbreaks have been reported in nine poultry farms throughout Israel in recent weeks.

The Ministry called on breeders to keep birds indoors to reduce the risk of infection from wild birds and quarantined all coops within 10 km of the latest two outbreaks.

It also instructed the general public to buy poultry meat and eggs only at regulated selling sites, avoid buying unmarked and unpackaged eggs, and consume cooked meat and eggs only.

Google developing free anti-terrorism moderation tool for smaller websites

0

Google is reportedly developing a free moderation tool that smaller websites can use to identify and remove terrorist material.

According to the Financial Times, the software is being developed in collaboration with Google’s research and development unit Jigsaw and the UN-supported Tech Against Terrorism, an initiative that assists tech companies in combating online terrorism.

“There are a lot of websites that just don’t have any people to do the enforcement. It is a really labor-intensive thing to even build the algorithms [and] then you need all those human reviewers,” Yasmin Green, chief executive of Jigsaw, was quoted as saying.

“(Smaller websites) do not want Isis content there, but there is a tonne of it all over (them),” she added.

The move comes as internet companies will be forced to remove extremist content from their platforms or face fines and other penalties under laws, said the report.

GIFCT (Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism), a non-governmental organization founded by Facebook, Microsoft, Twitter, and YouTube in 2017 to foster partnerships between many tech platforms, is supporting the project by Jigsaw, the report added.

Meanwhile, Meta launched a new open-source software tool called “Hasher-Matcher-Actioner” (HMA) that will help platforms stop the spread of terror content, child exploitation, or any other violating content.

With HMA, platforms will be able to scan for any violating content and take action as required.

HMA builds on Meta’s previous open-source image and video matching software, which can be used for any type of violating content.

IND vs SL, 1st T20I: Deepak Hooda loses cool on umpire over wide-ball decision

Deepak Hooda, who was the top scorer in India’s victory over Sri Lanka in the first T20, lost his cool during the game and abused the on-field umpire over the wide-ball decision.

The incident took place in the 18th over of India’s innings. Hooda tried to play the fifth ball of the over bowled by Kasun Rajitha and stepped onto the offside across the stumps and let the ball go, thinking it would be called a wide.

But the on-field umpire did not signal it as wide, leaving the batter fuming over the decision and using some unpleasant words. The video of the same is circulating on social media with people giving various kinds of reactions.

The right-handed batter even engaged in an argument with the umpire after getting a single on the very next delivery.

In Tuesday’s match, Hooda hammered 41 not out off 23 deliveries, hitting one boundary and four maximums that helped India post a modest total of 162/5 after being reduced to 94/5. Hooda, who was adjudged Player of the Match, established an unbeaten partnership of 68 runs with Axar Patel (31) for the sixth wicket.

With a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, India will next face Sri Lanka at the MCA Stadium in Pune on Thursday.

In his second conversation with NBK, Prabhas remembers Krishnam Raju

After opening up on matters close to his heart last week on the OTT chat show ‘Unstoppable 2 with NBK’, ‘Baahubali’ star Prabhas is all set to share more interesting details about him this week.

Prabhas spoke about his uncle, actor, and late Union Minister Krishnam Raju’s death. Tollywood star Nandamuri Balakrishna, the host, along with actor Gopichand, observed silence in the Rebel Star’s honor.

Nandamuri Balakrishna, who is fondly called NBK by his fans, asked Prabhas about his relationship with his uncle, who was a legendary actor in the Telugu cinema industry.

Prabhas said: “Today, whatever we are, it is because of him. We owe him. He came to Madras in those days and worked as a villain for 10-12 years and then started his own banner and created history with women-oriented stories. Our whole family misses him today so much.”

When NBK asked about Krishnam Raju’s death, Prabhas commented: “He was ill for a month, and I was in the hospital during that phase and in touch with the doctors continuously.”

Balakrishna recalled: “I missed the moment as I was in Turkey at that time for a shoot, and when I got the news, I could not control myself from crying.”

Prabhas continued to speak about his failures and best times with his best pal, actor Gopichand, who also graced the show and spoke on his struggles during the initial times of his career.

Episode 2 of Prabhas’ conversations with Balakrishna on ‘Unstoppable 2 with NBK’ streams January 6th on aha.

James Cameron hints at showing the dark side of Na’vi in ‘Avatar 3’

Filmmaker James Cameron said that the third installment of his blockbuster ‘Avatar’ franchise will introduce a third clan of Pandora that shows off the Na’vi’s darker side.

‘In Avatar’ and ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, moviegoers are introduced to two different Na’vi clans, the forest-dwelling Omaticaya and the water-dwelling Metkayina.

Both tribes are peaceful and only resort to violence when their land is seized by humans. However, audiences might soon find out that not all Na’vi are good Na’vi. James Cameron told France’s 20 Minutes (via Total Film) that the next installment is still-untitled.

Cameron said that ‘Avatar 3’ will explore “different cultures from those I have already shown. The fire will be represented by the ‘Ash People’. I want to show the Na’vi from another angle because, so far, I have only shown their good sides.”

“In the early films, there are very negative human examples and very positive Na’vi examples,” the director continued.

“In ‘Avatar 3,’ we will do the opposite. We will also explore new worlds while continuing the story of the main characters. I can say that the last parts will be the best. The others were an introduction, a way to set the table before serving the meal.”

While the first two ‘Avatar’ movies centered on conflicts between Na’vi tribes and humans, it appears that the third movie will find Na’vi facing off against Na’vi for the first time in the franchise. Perhaps the fire tribe will turn against Jake Sully due to the destruction his presence on Pandora has caused thus far.

Cameron has already finished production on ‘Avatar 3’, which is scheduled to hit theatres on December 20, 2024. Should the filmmaker extend the franchise all the way to ‘Avatar 5’, then the Na’vi will come to Earth. Producer Jon Landau revealed as much before ‘The Way of Water’ opened in theatres.

“Well, it’s funny,” Landau told Gizmodo.

“I wasn’t going to talk about it, but I’ve now subsequently heard that Jim has talked about it a little bit. In [‘Avatar 5’] there is a section of the story where we go to Earth. And we go to it to open people’s eyes, open Neytiri’s eyes, to what exists on Earth.”

“Earth is not just represented by the RDA (the franchise’s evil organization known as the Resources Development Administration),” he said.

“Just like you’re defined by the choices you make in life, not all humans are bad. Not all Na’vi are good. And that’s the case here on Earth. And we want to expose Neytiri to that.”

Canada receives record number of new permanent residents

0

The Canadian government announced that it received 431,645 new permanent residents in 2022 to fill labor shortages, the largest number of people ever welcomed in a year in the country’s history.

Prior to setting a new record for admissions in 2021, the last time Canada welcomed such a large number of newcomers was in 1913, the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) said in a statement on Tuesday.

“As the government focuses on addressing the acute labor market shortages we are facing today and building a strong economy into the future, one thing remains certain: immigration is a key part of the solution,” Xinhua news agency quoted the IRCC statement as saying.

In 2022, IRCC processed approximately 5.2 million applications for permanent residence, temporary residence, and citizenship.

That’s double the number of applications processed in 2021, according to the statement.

Currently, immigration accounts for almost 100 percent of Canada’s labor force growth.

Roughly 75 percent of Canada’s population growth came from immigration, mostly in the economic category.

By 2036, immigrants will represent up to 30 percent of Canada’s population, compared with 20.7 percent in 2011.

During the 2021 census, nearly one in four people counted were or had been a landed immigrant or permanent resident in Canada, the largest proportion among G7 countries.

Google rolls out new Pixel update

0

Google announced that it has rolled out a ‘January software update’ to all supported Pixel devices running Android 13.

Starting from Tuesday, the rollout will “continue over the next few weeks in phases depending on carrier and device”, the tech giant said on a support page.

Users will get a notification once the over-the-air (OTA) becomes available for their devices.

“We encourage you to check your Android version and update to receive the latest software,” the company said.

The new update includes support for static spatial audio, which will offer surround sound for any connected headset.

Moreover, “another update will roll out to Pixel Buds Pro in the coming weeks that will enable spatial audio with head tracking”, Google said.

The January 2023 update also includes bug fixes and improvements such as in ‘Display & Graphics’ and ‘Biometrics’.

Last month, Google rolled out new features to Pixel devices, including new security and privacy settings. With these features, users were able to review their security and privacy settings, risk levels, and other information all in one place, making it easy to protect their phones, accounts, and passwords.

BFI curator asserts Alia’s performance in ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ is Oscar-worthy

Alia Bhatt received words of praise from the British Film Institute’s Robin Baker, who said that the Bollywood actress should be nominated at the British Academy Film Awards and Oscars for her performance in ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’.

Alia thanked Baker for all the appreciation coming her way.

On Instagram, Robin wrote: “If I was a member of BAFTA or the Academy (I’m not), this year I would be voting for Alia Bhatt as Best Actress for her performance in GANGUBAI KATHIAWADI (Sanjay Leela Bhansali, India, 2022). She plays a prostitute turned underworld brothel madam turned campaigner for sex workers’ rights, and the joy of her performance is how she grows as her character develops.”

The head curator at BFI added: “The film is big, brash, sentimental, and hugely enjoyable, but Bhatt is sensational. There’s the additional pleasure of the film’s classic Hindi cinema references – from Gangubai’s love of Dev Anand to scenes of cinema-going in the 50s and 60s to the numerous film posters lining the streets around Bombay’s red light district.”

“If you haven’t seen it (especially BAFTA and Academy Award-voting friends), please head to Netflix ASAP.” Alia re-shared Robin’s post with a series of white heart emojis.

‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, was released in India on February 25, 2022. The film, which also stars Ajay Devgn in a cameo, had its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival a week before its Indian release.
