United Cup: Madison Keys gives USA early lead over Britain in City Final

0

Madison Keys gave the United States an early 1-0 lead over Great Britain with a win over World No. 145 Katie Swan in the United Cup Sydney City Final, here on Wednesday.

World No. 7 Keys registered a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Swan after rallying from a set down.

Britain has served as a fantastic underdog foil at the United Cup, as they staged upset wins over Australia and Spain in the group stage. Swan looked keen to continue the trend, as she took the opening set 2-6.

But, the American bounced back quickly to take the second set but could not hold on to an early lead in the decider. Swan broke back to 3-3 in the third set off a double fault from the American.

Keys then showed her experience in the end. She played a disciplined and patient return game to break Swan to 5-4 and served out the win after two hours and 18 minutes.

The tie continues with the battle of team No. 1s as Taylor Fritz is set to face Cameron Norrie and Jessica Pegula to face Harriet Dart. Frances Tiafoe will play Daniel Evans in the fourth singles tie.

If the teams are tied at 2-2 after singles, the match will come down to mixed doubles, which is scheduled to feature Pegula and Tiafoe against Dart and Evans.

The winner of the tie will advance to the United Cup Final Four, which is scheduled here on Friday. The best runner-up from across the three City Finals will also progress to the Final Four.

Copa del Rey: Real Madrid made to struggle by Cacereno on night of upsets

0

Fourth-tier Cacereno pushed Real Madrid all the way in their third-round Copa del Rey tie.

It needed a moment of magic from Madrid’s Brazilian forward Rodrygo to give Real Madrid a 1-0 win on Tuesday night in a match that was much more complicated than most would have expected.

The first half was an even affair with Cacereno by no means inferior to their illustrious rivals, and little changed after the break as the home side continued to dig deep.

Rodrygo’s individual goal decided the game, but the home side is out of the tournament with their pride intact on a night of surprises in Spain’s knockout competition, reports Xinhua.

Ceuta, who are bottom of the third-tier RFEF I, beat La Liga’s bottom side Elche 1-0 thanks to Rodri’s 44th-minute penalty. To make matters worse for Elche, Ezequiel Ponce was sent off 15 minutes into the second half in a disastrous result for a side that has only four points in La Liga.

Second-division Sporting Gijon beat top-flight Rayo Vallecano 2-0 with two second-half goals from Serbian striker Uros Milovanovic, while fellow second-division outfit Levante won a thriller 3-2 against Getafe.

Valencia had no such problems as they cruised past third-tier La Nucia with goals from Justin Kluivert, Ilaix Moriba, and Hugo Duro, while Villarreal recovered from a goal down to thrash second-division Cartagena 5-1, with Alex Baena, Arnaut Danjuma, Jose Luis Morales, Samuel Chukwueze and Etienne Capoue all scoring second-half goals.

Twitter plans to expand political ads soon

0

Micro-blogging platform Twitter-04 on Wednesday announced that it is planning to “expand” the political advertising it allows “in the coming weeks”.

The platform made the announcement from its Twitter Safety account, saying: “Today, we’re relaxing our ads policy for cause-based ads in the US. We also plan to expand the political advertising we permit in the coming weeks.

“Moving forward, we will align our advertising policy with that of TV and other media outlets. As with all policy changes, we will first ensure that our approach to reviewing and approving content protects people on Twitter.”

Several users expressed their thoughts on the platform’s announcement.

While one user said, “this is actually a good call at Twitter. Kinda shocking”, another commented, “translation: Advertisers don’t want to advertise on here anymore so we’re just gonna let the alt-right advertise whatever”.

Meanwhile, in November 2019, Twitter officially banned all kinds of political ads from its platform, weeks after former CEO Jack Dorsey announced that the theAmicro-blogging site would no longer allow those ads.

Crypto winter wipes over 70K Bitcoin millionaires in 2022

0

The crypto winter wiped over 70,000 Bitcoin millionaires in 2022, as the recent volatility experienced by top cryptocurrencies resulted in millionaire holders suffering significant losses, a report showed on Tuesday.

According to data by Finbold (as of January 2), the number of Bitcoin millionaire addresses stood at 28,007, representing a drop of about 71.73 percent or 71,085 addresses from January 2 last year.

At the start of last year, the number of millionaire addresses stood at 99,092.

“The rise of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies in recent years has created a new class of wealthy individuals, many of whom had made their fortunes by buying into the market early,” said the report.

However, the past year has seen the market experienced a sharp downturn, with the value of Bitcoin falling significantly, resulting in a devastating impact on the wealth of many holders.

Notably, most Bitcoin addresses hold between $100 and $999 worth of BTC at 13.47 million as of January 2023, representing a drop of about 13.33 percent (on-year) from 15.63 million.

The second largest group of Bitcoin holders accounts for at least $1,000 worth of BTC at 5.33 million as of January 2023, while in 2022, the figure stood at 6.54 million.

“As Bitcoin’s price continues to fall, many investors have seen their holdings significantly devalue. Therefore, the drop in millionaire addresses highlights how far the crypto market has fallen from the 2021 bull run,” the report said.

It is worth noting that the declining number of Bitcoin millionaires is not solely an impact of the plunging prices.

“With Bitcoin undergoing a free fall in recent weeks, the likelihood of holders liquidating their assets increased to avoid further losses. Institutions have also jumped on the liquidation bandwagon, with American business intelligence firm MicroStrategy selling over 700 Bitcoin,” the report said.

1st T20I: Sri Lanka win toss, elect to field first as India hand debuts to Shubman, Shivam Mavi

0

Opener Shubman Gill and pacer Shivam Mavi were handed their India debut as Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka won the toss and elected to field in the opening T20I of the three-match series at the Wankhede Stadium, here on Tuesday.

Shanaka said the reason behind bowling first was that they expect the dew to play a big role in the second innings.

“Going to bowl first. The dew factor will be there later. We were doing well in T20Is except for the World Cup. We are following the routines. Got the same batting line-up as our last game,” Shanaka said at the toss.

India skipper Hardik Pandya was okay with the situation and said he wanted to bat first anyway. He said Mavi got his chance because pacer Arshdeep Singh was not available.

“We were going to bat first, to be honest,” Hardik said. “I want our team to be challenged. We have two debutants today — Shivam Mavi and Shubman Gill. Arshdeep wasn’t available, so Mavi comes in his place.

Excited. Always been excited to play for the country, but obviously leading now makes it more special. Excited to see how this new bunch of guys express themselves,” Pandya said.

United Cup: Garcia keeps French hopes alive with win over Martic

0

WTA Finals champion Caroline Garcia delivered the goods under pressure, defeating Petra Martic 7-6(9), 6-4 in a must-win United Cup rubber to keep France’s hopes of advancing to the City Finals alive, here on Tuesday.

Croatia had led 2-0 overnight after wins for Donna Vekic and Borna Coric, but Garcia came into her clash with Martic with a promising 4-1 head-to-head record. The WTA Finals champion backed that up, extending it to 5-1 as she denied Martic the chance to clinch for her team.

Fittingly for a contest between two of the best servers on Tour, the first set went down to the wire and was decided by the thinnest of margins. Through the first 12 games, it was Martic who carved out more chances on return, deploying her sliced backhand to fine effect — including on one lofted lob that left Garcia flailing.

Garcia needed her finest serves to save breakpoints in the first and ninth games; by contrast, despite serving second, Martic conceded only four points behind her delivery through the first 12 games.

The ensuing tie-break was a thrilling microcosm of the match as a whole. Momentum shifted back and forth between the pair, and Garcia needed to save one set point at 6/7 before converting her fifth by putting away a short forehand.

Garcia still had to stave off a further two break points at the start of the second set, but that was her last moment of danger. In the next game, she broke Martic to love, sealing the game by rushing forwards off her return and finding a volley winner that clipped the net on its way into the open court.

The Frenchwoman, who fired seven aces among her 33 total winners, would only drop four more points on serve as she maintained her lead through the end of the match.

Bumrah returns from injury, included in ODI series against Sri Lanka

0

Star speedster Jasprit Bumrah has been added to India’s squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Tuesday.

Bumrah has been out of action since September 2022 and was subsequently ruled out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup due to a back injury.

“The pacer has undergone rehabilitation and has been declared fit by the National Cricket Academy (NCA). He will be joining the Team India ODI squad soon,” the BCCI said in a statement.

The ODI series against Sri Lanka starts on January 10 in Guwahati. The second and third matches will be played on January 12 and 15 in Kolkata and Thiruvananthapuram.

India had announced the ODI squad in December and Bumrah was initially not included with reports citing that the BCCI was cautious about rushing the pacer back into the mix.

Besides Bumrah, Mohammad Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Umran Malik, and Arshdeep Singh are the other pacers in the squad with all-rounder Hardik Pandya also in the mix.

Updated squad for Sri Lanka ODIs: Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), Hardik Pandya (VC), Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh.

Ruhaanika Dhawan wants to focus on board exams, no plans to shift to new flat yet

‘Yeh Hai Mohabbatein’ actress Ruhaanika Dhawan has all the reasons to celebrate as she purchased a flat at the age of 15, for which she wrote a long note expressing gratitude towards her parents. But she has no plans to shift right now as she is preparing for her class 10 Board exams.

Ruhaanika told Ians: “Right now, I have to crack my board exams and so I am concerned about my studies and classes. For my studies only, I have taken a break from acting as well and focusing on my academics. Apart from that, certain interiors and other things also need to be done. So, we will wait for the funds, save money and maybe rent it out for a year and then plan to shift to the new house.”

The actress, who started her career with ‘Mrs. Kaushik Ki Paanch Bahuein’ and later went on to work in ‘Yeh Hai Mohabbatein’, and was also seen in the film Ghayal Once Again’, gave credit to the way her mother saved the money and invested it methodically for making this happen and purchasing a 3 BHK flat at such an early stage of her life.

She added that it took years to have the financial arrangement for buying her new house: “It took 7 or 8 years to happen and it won’t be possible without the support of my parents and especially my mother. Although, I started with ‘Mrs. Kaushik Ki Paanch Bahuein’ but that role was just for 15 or 20 days. The regular thing was ‘Yeh Hai Mohabbatein’ and I still remember I used to shoot on weekends for the show. Just three days, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.”

“Every penny of my earnings was saved by my mother and she invested it properly. God has been so kind that we got good returns out of the savings and everything. My father has invested in funds. So, I got a lot of support and motivation from my parents and thus it finally happened.”

So, what is Ruhaanika planning to do after her studies? She said: “Post my studies, I want to focus on my acting career and would love to join a performing arts school in India or abroad and make a comeback on screen.”

Croatia’s 2022 tourism revenues hit new record

0

Croatia’s revenues from tourism in 2022 are projected to total a record 13 billion euros, the country’s Minister of Tourism Nikolina Brnjac said here.

The number of tourists who visited Croatia last year was almost as high as in the pre-pandemic year 2019, the media agency quoted the Minister as saying.

In the first nine months of last year, Croatia’s tourism revenues already exceeded 11.6 billion euros, easily surpassing the previous record of 10.5 billion euros logged in 2019, Brnjac said.

The country recorded 18.9 million tourist arrivals and 104.8 million overnight stays last year, 37 percent and 25 percent, respectively, more than in 2021, and 91 percent and 96 percent, respectively, more than the previous record year of 2019.

“Our focus in 2023 remains on quality, sustainability, and innovation so that the successes of tourism are long-term and can contribute to the overall economic and social development of Croatia,” Brnjac said.

Adelaide International 1: Djokovic earns first win of season, Medvedev advances

0

Competing in his first singles match of the season, Novak Djokovic quickly found his range to overcome Frenchman Constant Lestienne 6-3, 6-2 and reach the second round at the Adelaide International 1, here.

The win kept a potential Djokovic versus Daniil Medvedev semifinal on track after the third seed earlier advanced when Lorenzo Sonego retired with a right arm injury at 7-6(6), 2-1 (ret).

While Djokovic and Lestienne were evenly matched through the first five games, once the top seed broke the floodgates opened for a victory, much to the delight of a packed center court at The Drive.

“For the first match I can’t complain, I played very well,” Djokovic said. “I thought the first probably six games were very competitive.

“I’ve never faced him before today’s match. He’s a counter-puncher. He doesn’t make too many mistakes and he absorbs the pace from his opponent, kind of tricky serve, and hits his spots but once I made that break at 3-2 first set I felt like I stepped it up one or two levels and played really good tennis the rest of the match.”

Not since the Australian Open fourth round five years ago had the former world No.1 lost singles match Down Under.

That came against Hyeon Chung and while world No.65 Lestienne was ranked only seven places below the South Korean at the time of that boilover, this always presented a tough opening ask for a 30-year-old whose best had come at Challenger level.

Djokovic awaits Australian Jordan Thompson or another Frenchman Quentin Halys for a return to the quarterfinals at the event he won back in 2007.

Earlier, Medvedev produced an almighty escape, saving nine set points against Lorenzo Sonego before the Italian retired hurt.

In his first singles clash on Australian soil since last year’s agonizing five-set defeat to Rafael Nadal in the final at Melbourne Park, the third seed was clutch under pressure to deny the world No.45 the early advantage.

“Yeah I didn’t know it was nine [set points],” Medvedev said after the 7-6(6), 2-1 (ret) victory. “That’s actually crazy. Probably maybe the first time in my life I’ve saved nine set points.

“What a match to start the year. Unfortunate for everybody that it finished early in a way even if we played one hour and 40 minutes but happy to be through.”

Sonego, a champion in Metz last year, had never faced the former world No.1 but dictated for much of the opening set, frequently forging his way to the net to keep his 26-year-old opponent on the back foot.

The Italian held six set points on his opponent’s serve at 5-4 but time and again Medvedev came up with the big serves when he needed them.

Again Sonego had his chances two games later when three more set points went begging from 0-40 on his opponent’s serve, but the seeds of doubt were now planted and after 80 minutes Medvedev finally turned the tide in his favor to snatch the first set in a tiebreak.

“I mean to be honest 0-40 was a tough moment. I didn’t count but I knew I saved a lot of set points,” Medvedev said. “But if I’m not mistaken we didn’t have a lot of rallies to play. Many of them were from my good serves or him missing a couple of returns, so I’m like, ‘OK, I saved this great game, now I have to bring the momentum to my side and I’m 0-40 in the next one’.

“That’s not so good in tennis but I knew I had no other choice but to try to come back in this game also and I’m really happy that I managed to stay strong and bring the set to my favor.”

Trailing 1-2 in the second set, Sonego called for treatment on his right arm before calling time on the match. Medvedev will next meet Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic for a place in the quarterfinals.
