Sara Ali Khan pens heartfelt note on ‘Atrangi Re’ first anniversary

Director-producer Aanand L. Rai and his team are celebrating the first anniversary of his streaming movie ‘Atrangi Re’.

The film featured Akshay Kumar as the lead along with Sara Ali Khan and Dhanush and told the story of a girl who becomes mentally ill after suffering a childhood trauma.

Taking to his Instagram, the director shared pictures of himself with Akshay Kumar. Sara Ali Khan and Dhanush. He wrote in the caption, “Some memories are unforgettable, remaining ever vivid and heartwarming.”

Akshay played the role of an imaginary magician named Sajjad. Sara also took to her social media to share some BTS clips and fond memories from the sets of ‘Atrangi Re’. She also penned down a heartfelt note, thanking the team, director Aanand L. Rai, choreographer Vijay Ganguly, and her co-stars.

In the caption, she wrote: “A year ago, today, I shared Rinku Suryavanshi with all of you. Can’t believe how time has flown. It feels like just yesterday that @aanandlrai sir was making me swing soda bottles in Bihar and @vijayganguly was trying to teach me ‘heroine wali ada’ in Madurai.”

She added in her caption, “I wish I could just go back and do all those 2-hour drives on the outskirts of UP-Bihar, late nights baarish shoots in Varanasi, sunrise drives in Delhi with sir, long steady cam shots with sprints and thumkas, and of course the idlis and sambar that @dhanushkraja would feed us and the Sarson ka saag that @akshaykumar sir got us all.

“Seema Ji I so miss being beaten by chappals by you because every moment after that you’ve just been so loving, helpful, and giving to me. Missing @aanandlrai and his laad-pyaar a lot today.”

‘Atrangi Re’ was released on Disney+ Hotstar on December 24, 2021, and received a positive response overall, although many netizens objected to the portrayal of mental health in the film.

Salman also added that she has always chosen a way towards her convenience. He said that for her only those relations are real with whom she has good terms and others are fake for her.

He said: “You did not press the buzzer to save Ankit from getting nominated immediately. So, how you can say that your decision was different from others.”

Priyanka replied that she never wanted to give up her best friend for the signing amount of Rs 25 lakh.

India’s stand on Ukraine comes between New Delhi and Washington

0

Ukraine put India-US ties to the test in 2022. The relationship had been sailing high until then, fueled mainly by US President Joe Biden’s escalation of engagements with the Quad carrying over from 2021 and the focus on the Indo-Pacific, with China in the crosshairs.

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in February changed all that, testing India-US ties like no other issue in recent years.

The Ukraine invasion raced to the top of President Biden’s foreign policy priorities — not only to stop President Putin right there but to also roll him back.

If President Ronald Reagan brought down the Soviet Union, which he had so famously branded the “Evil Empire”, Biden would go down in history as the man who stopped Putin, whose invasion of Ukraine was seen as the manifestation of his deeper desire to expand Russia; comparisons with Nazi Germany have been made by senior members of his administration.

Ukraine rallied European allies to oppose the Russian invasion as a block. He did not have to try very hard, with the exception of Germany which had come to depend heavily on Russian oil and gas. Europe was stunned and frightened by the invasion, the first on the continent since World War II.

Sweden and Finland, which had long resisted joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, the 30-member military alliance that Putin had set out to weaken, have applied for membership.

On February 25, just the day after the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, India abstained in a vote on a US-backed draft resolution in the UN Security Council to end the invasion of Ukraine. Russia vetoed the measure.

India abstained again on a procedural vote in the UN Security Council on February 26 to call for a session of the General Assembly to condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

And, in a vote in the General Assembly on March 2 on Ukraine, India abstained again. “We remain firm in our conviction that differences can only be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy,” the then-Indian Permanent Representative to the UN, T.S. Tirumurti, said explaining India’s decision. “India urges that all Member States demonstrate their commitment to the principles of the UN Charter, to international law and respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states.”

India’s voting record at the UN has few cheerleaders in the US, so the abstentions on the Russian invasion did not come as a surprise — New Delhi had also abstained on the Soviet Union’s invasion of then Czechoslovakia in 1968 and Afghanistan in 1979.

But it rankled when taken with New Delhi’s decision to not only defy US-led western sanctions on Russian oil and gas but step up imports from Russia severalfold, because of hugely discounted rates.

Though outwardly indifferent, the Biden White House was privately perturbed and peeved, which came out in the open during a visit to New Delhi by then-Deputy National Security Adviser Duleep Singh a few days later in March.

“I come here in a spirit of friendship to explain the mechanisms of our sanctions, the importance of joining us, to express a shared resolve, and to advance shared interests. And yes, there are consequences to countries that actively attempt to circumvent or backfill the sanctions,” Singh, who was the architect of the Russia sanctions, said.

Singh further said, with a direct reference to India’s longstanding ties with Russia, “Russia is going to be the junior partner in this relationship with China. And the more leverage that China gains over Russia, the less favorable that is for India, I don’t think anyone would believe that if China once again breached the Line of Actual Control, Russia will come running to India’s defense.”

Singh’s remarks — especially the threat of “consequences” — set off a storm in India and the US sought to soften the blow saying Singh had not issued any warning and that every nation is free to focus on its interests and that he had “productive” meetings while in New Delhi.

Singh left the White House national security team shortly, though for unrelated reasons.

India’s longstanding ties with Russia — going back to the erstwhile Soviet Union — is generally acknowledged in the US, as does its dependence on Russian arms and weapons and support in the UN Security Council for a whole host of issues, including Kashmir. But does that acknowledgment beget acceptance and appreciation? Straight answer: No.

Disquiet over the Indian position on Russia-Ukraine went beyond the White House. Longtime friends of India, such as Congressman Ami Bera, who is of Indian origin, called for India to “speak with a stronger voice”. And Ro Khanna, another Indian lawmaker, urged India to choose between the US and Russia.

TV and radio news commentators and hosts took to naming India and China in the same breath as Russia’s allies and enablers and were, therefore, vicariously responsible for the brutality unleashed by Moscow in Ukraine — Bucha massacre among them — which were brought into American livings live by intense 24×7 coverage by TV and print media.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi broke that spell in September when he was seen to have “rebuked” President Putin over Ukraine in public remarks for a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization meeting in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

“Modi rebukes Putin over Ukraine”, ‘The Washington Post’ said in a headline, reflecting the typical US response to Modi’s remarks.

“Today’s era is not an era of war,” Modi had said to Putin in that meeting.

The sentiment contained in that sentence was subsequently downplayed by the Indian foreign policy establishment that sought to portray it as a reiteration of the existing Indian position, which it wasn’t. India has used until then standard UN language to call for an immediate cessation of hostilities, respect for the UN charter guaranteeing the territorial integrity of member states, and diplomacy.

Modi’s remarks were seen as pathbreaking by the US. And its officials continue to cite it as the Indian position on the Russian invasion of Ukraine whenever they are asked.

Those remarks also made it into the joint communique of the recently concluded G-20 meet in Bali, Indonesia, in what has been touted as a major diplomatic victory for India.

As for all other issues in the relationship. “Pretty OK, nothing great,” said a veteran of India-US ties.

Ben Stokes can replace M.S. Dhoni as captain at CSK, says Scott Styris

0

Former New Zealand cricketer Scott Styris sees the Chennai Super Kings’ decision to buy England Test skipper and allrounder Ben Stokes in the Mini-Auction for the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as an attempt to find a successor to skipper MS Dhoni.

Dhoni, who had relinquished captaincy in the 2022 edition but was forced to take back the reins as the team fared miserably under Ravindra Jadeja, will probably be leading the CSK for the last time this season as he wants to bid farewell in front of home fans at Chennai.

With the 41-year-old four-time IPL-winning skipper set to retire for the final time soon, CSK is desperately looking for someone to take charge of the team and Styris believes Stokes is that man.

In his comments during a post-auction programme on Jio Cinema, Styris suggested that Dhoni would straight away pass on the captaincy to Stokes.

“I think so, I think he will be captain. We have seen MS Dhoni try and pass the captaincy on, he has not been playing cricket regularly in between the IPL. It’s just an opportunity for MS Dhoni to pass the baton. I think yes, they will do it straight away. Ben Stokes will be captain,” Styris said.

Stokes is one of the most sought-after all-rounders in world cricket. He has captaincy experience and has played in IPL for different teams.

With Dhoni leading this season, he will also get time to settle in CSK and will be ready to take over either toward the end of the season or ahead of the next edition of IPL.

K’taka boy bitten by snake dies due to long ambulance wait

0

A five-year-old boy died due to a delay in the arrival of an ambulance after he was bitten by a snake in this district, sources said on Saturday.

The deceased boy has been identified as Rohan, a resident of Doddakalluru village near Sakleshpur taluk. The family members and the villagers slammed the authorities for the late arrival of the ambulance causing a delay that resulted in the death.

According to police, Rohan was bitten by a snake on the premises of Anganwadi (government preschool). His father rushed him to the nearby Hettur government hospital on his bike, where the doctors referred him to Sakleshpur town hospital and asked him to wait for the ambulance.

While waiting for the ambulance, the boy lost consciousness. The parents had arranged a car and attempted to transport the boy to taluk hospital in Sakleshpur.

The ambulance had come in midway and the boy was shifted to the vehicle from the car. After reaching Sakleshpur taluk hospital, the parents were asked to take the boy to the district hospital in Hassan.

In spite of the treatment, the boy succumbed at the hospital. Irate villagers blamed the non-availability of an ambulance service for the death. An investigation into the case is on.

It’ll be SP’s M-Y versus BJP’s M-Y in UP

In the New Year, the Samajwadi Party is seeking to consolidate its M-Y (Muslim- Yadav) base and pose a challenge to BJP’s M-Y (Modi-Yogi) — the latter having proved its power in the recent elections across the country.

The past year has been a roller-coaster ride for the Samajwadis in Uttar Pradesh and the party is now reworking its strategies for 2023.

The party — following the demise of its founder Mulayam Singh Yadav and the rapprochement with Shivpal Singh Yadav — is working overtime to improve its performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

SP president Akhilesh Yadav is also trying to counter allegations of being a drawing-room politician.

He visited jailed party MLA Irfan Solanki in the Kanpur jail, a day before the latter was shifted to Maharajganj district jail.

He will also be paying a visit to Jhansi jail where another SP MLA Deepchand Yadav is lodged.

Akhilesh’s decision to meet his beleaguered party leaders is apparently designed to send a positive message to the party cadres.

The Samajwadi Party has lost three allies in UP after the 2022 Assembly polls — the Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party (SBSP), Mahaan Dal, and Janwadi Party — but the SP has, more or less, made up for the loss by bringing in Shivpal Yadav into the party fold.

Shivpal Yadav is known for his organizational skills and ability to mobilize party workers. Given an opportunity, he will play an important role in gearing up the party for the 2024 polls.

His return to the SP fold will also prevent a division in the Yadav vote base of the party.

A senior SP MLA, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said “Shivpal’s return to the party fold will prove to be an elixir for the party and also galvanize the veterans who had receded into their shells when the Akhilesh – Shivpal rift widened.”

According to party sources, Akhilesh will be looking towards new allies for the general elections, besides further cementing his friendship with the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD).

He will focus on smaller parties like the Azad Samaj Party (Bhim Army) instead of looking toward the BSP and Congress.

“He knows that SP is the only party that can challenge the BJP in Uttar Pradesh. The results of the recent Assembly elections where the SP appreciably increased its vote percentage and also doubled its seats, is proof that it is SP alone that can challenge the BJP alliance,” said the MLA.

Another major change in the SP strategy for 2024 polls is its decision to openly support Muslims.

Akhilesh, since he took charge of the party in 2017, has been peddling soft Hindutva and trying to shed a pro-Muslim image.

“But Akhilesh is now speaking up against atrocities on Muslims. He has realized that the SP should follow his late father’s caste formula of Muslim Yadav. The fact that he visited Irfan Solanki in jail, is a part of this strategy,” said a party leader.

The main challenge that Akhilesh will face in the coming days is the ‘respectable amalgamation’ of Shivpal Singh Yadav’s supporters. He is also expected to give a respectable position to Shivpal in the party.

According to sources, Akhilesh will ensure that winnability is the main factor in ticket distribution for the general elections.

“It is a case of every seat counts and the party will make sure that candidates are selected with care,” said a former MLC, known for his proximity to Akhilesh.

However, the biggest challenge that Akhilesh faces is that the BJP has an extremely well-oiled organizational machinery and SP is no match for it yet.

Besides, Akhilesh is leading a one-man army while the BJP has multiple leaders who carpet bomb the entire state during elections.

Banking on Telangana growth model, KCR looks to influence national politics

The year 2022 saw the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) opening a new chapter in its 20-year-old history as it rechristened itself as Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) with the party supremo K. Chandrasekhar Rao eyeing a key role in national politics.

With the formal launch of BRS and the recent opening of its central office in New Delhi, the party is gearing up to expand its activities to different parts of the country.

KCR, as Rao is popularly known, will be projecting the Telangana development model to the rest of the country and presenting his vision to replicate the same in other states.

The coming year will determine to what extent it will influence national politics but a lot will depend on the outcome of the Assembly elections in Telangana scheduled towards the end of 2023.

If KCR leads the party to a third consecutive term in power and becomes the first leader in South India to score a hat-trick, it is likely to bolster the chances of the BRS establishing itself as a force in some other states ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

From a leader who led the movement and achieved statehood for Telangana to becoming the first chief minister of India’s youngest state and winning a second term in power, the 68-year-old is now looking to set a new record and don the mantle of a national leader.

While launching the BRS, KCR gave the slogan of “ab ki baar kisan sarkar”, thus hinting that farmers and agriculture will be at the core of his party’s strategy as it looks to make inroads in other states.

As part of his efforts to emerge as a national leader, the BRS chief distributed compensation of Rs 3 lakh each to the kin of the farmers killed during the movement against the three farm laws of the Centre. The Telangana cabinet approved Rs 22.50 crore for distribution among the families of the 750 farmers killed during a 13-month-long stir.

On every occasion, the BRS chief highlights the innovative schemes under implementation in Telangana for development of agriculture and the welfare of farmers. He has predicted that a non-BJP government will come to power at the Centre and that it will provide free electricity to farmers across the country.

Claiming that Telangana is the only state in the country supplying 24 hours free electricity to farmers, KCR has already announced that when a non-BJP government comes to power at the Centre, this will be extended to the entire country.

KCR has also been highlighting two other major schemes – Rythu Bandhu and Rythu Beema. Under Rythu Bandhu, the government is providing investment support of Rs 10,000 per acre every year irrespective of the extent of land owned by a farmer while under Rythu Beema it is providing compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the family of a farmer after his death whatever may be the cause of death.

The BR’s leader has also been highlighting how Telangana achieved tremendous progress in eight years.

Telangana’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) more than doubled to Rs 11.55 lakh crore while the per capita income increased to Rs 2.75 lakh in 2022 from Rs 1.24 lakh in 2014.

Overcoming electricity shortage to ensure round-the-clock electricity to all sectors, a massive increase in food production by completing several irrigation projects including Kaleshwaram, considered the world’s largest lift irrigation project, and the increase in annual IT exports to Rs 1.83 lakh crore from Rs 57,000 crore in 2014 are projected as the other achievements.

“When a new state can achieve this in such a short span of time, why can’t the rest of the country achieve this,” KCR often poses the question at public meetings.

KCR also claims that no other state can compete with Telangana in terms of welfare schemes for various sections of people. Last year, it launched another innovative scheme, Dalit Bandhu, for the socio-economic empowerment of Dalits. Under this scheme, every Dalit family will be provided Rs 10 lakh assistance to start any business of its choice.

These schemes are not only attracting national attention but a few villages in neighboring Karnataka and Maharashtra bordering Telangana have even demanded that they be merged with Telangana so that farmers and other sections of people can reap the benefits of its schemes.

The BRS is primarily looking to expand from these states and also looking at Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

In tune with the priority of the agriculture sector and farmers, BRS launched a Kisan cell on the day of the launch. KCR appointed the leader of the National Farmers’ Union, Gurnam Singh Charudi of Haryana, as president of the BRS Kisan Cell.

The party has drawn up plans to go aggressive to expand after Christmas. As part of this, the BRS Kisan Cell will be launched next week in Punjab, Haryana, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana.

BRS leaders say that many former MLAs and senior political leaders with their teams and followers from various states of North, East and Central India are having discussions with KCR. The BRS chief is explaining to them what kind of policies should be adopted according to the aspirations of the people there following the geographical, social, and cultural conditions of their states.

While KCR has long been aspiring for a role in national politics by bringing together like-minded parties for a third alternative, his plans failed to take off apparently due to differences with other regional leaders over the composition of the proposed front.

Aware of the fact that with the limited Lok Sabha seats (17) that Telangana has, he will not be able to influence national politics, KCR came out with the idea of BRS. Working with the 2024 Lok Sabha polls as its target, the party will be focusing on 100 Lok Sabha seats.

The BRS hopes to influence the nation with its socio-economic and political agenda by winning at least 50-80 seats. But, it remains to be seen what strategy the party will adopt to achieve this target.

“BRS will remain a fallacy unless the party wins seats outside Telangana. Currently, every state has a different dynamic and there are regional forces to cater to the expectations of the people there,” observes political analyst Palvai Raghvendra Reddy.

“KCR is wishing to go national with farmers as a key agenda. But in the past elections held across India, we have not seen farmers alone deciding the fate of an election, except in western Uttar Pradesh during the time of Chaudhary Charan Singh and once in Punjab in 2012. We have noticed how the farmers’ agenda has faltered in UP in this year’s Assembly polls,” he said.

The BRS will face challenges in every state as it seeks allies to achieve its target.

“The first major challenge before KCR would be to get prominent allies across states/regions who would be willing to contest on BRS party tickets. We are a country of divergent groups and differing sentiments, and we will have to wait and see who will align with the BRS in the immediate future,” said Reddy.

“Though the Janata Dal (Secular) leadership was seen standing with KCR during the launch of the BRS, it is unlikely they would contest as BRS in the upcoming Karnataka Assembly elections; and Gowdas are not that big a factor from Karnataka in the parliamentary elections,” the analyst said.

Twitter Blue users now get ‘prioritised rankings in conversations’

Micro-blogging platform Twitter has updated the list of features for its Blue service, which mentioned that subscribers paying for the $8 per month service will now get “prioritized rankings in conversations.”

According to Twitter, this feature prioritizes subscribers’ replies to tweets that they interact with. Twitter CEO Elon Musk promised this feature in November and said that the subscribers would get, “Priority in replies, mentions & search, which is essential to defeating spam/scam.”

Earlier this month, the micro-blogging platform repeated this promise and said, “soon, subscribers with the blue checkmark will get priority ranking in search, mentions, and replies to help lower the visibility of scams, spam, and bots.”

The updated page also mentioned that subscribers can now upload videos up to 60 minutes long from around the web at 1080p resolution and 2GB in file size, but also all videos must comply with the company’s rules.

Earlier, Twitter Blue subscribers were only able to upload 10-minute-long videos on the platform at 1080p resolution with a file size limit of 512MB.

Nepal deports Charles Sobhraj to France

0

Nepal government on Friday evening deported serial killer Charles Sobhraj to France after his release from jail and obtaining the necessary immigration clearance.

Sobhraj (78), also known as ‘Bikini Killer’ and ‘The Serpent’, was freed from jail on Friday afternoon as per the order of the Supreme Court of Nepal.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court ordered the release of Sobhraj for different reasons. Huge security deployment was ensured at the time of his deportation at the Tribhuvan International Airport here on Friday evening. He was deported on the condition of not returning to Nepal for another 10 years, said Nepal’s Department of Immigration.

The government had issued a travel document ahead of his deportation as he lacks a valid passport. Sobhraj left on a regular Qatar Airlines flight and will reach Paris after a stopover in Doha.

Hearing a habeas corpus petition filed by Sobhraj, a joint bench of Justices Sapana Pradhan Malla and Til Prasad Shrestha had ordered his release on Wednesday, stating that he need not be jailed for another case, adding that arrangements be made to return the French citizen back to his country within 15 days.

Sobhraj spent 19 years and two months in the central jail in Kathmandu. Though he was supposed to be released on Thursday, due to some internal process, including documentation and others at the immigration department, his release was only possible on Friday afternoon, according to officials.

Sbobhraj was wanted in Nepal for the 1975 murders of Canadian Laddie DuParr and an American woman named Annabella Tremont, both of whom he had befriended in Kathmandu. Nepal police arrested Sobhraj in September 2003 from a five-star hotel in Kathmandu.

In March 1986, he escaped from the Tihar Jail in Delhi after it looked likely he would be extradited to Thailand to face charges of murdering six girls, all wearing bikinis, on a beach in Pattaya. He was later re-arrested in Goa in April 1986. After his release from prison in 1997, he was known to have been living quietly in France.

Sobhraj argued in his petition that he has already served 19 years in jail and that is 78 years old.

Kathmandu and Bhaktapur district courts in Nepal had found him guilty of the murder of American and Canadian citizens in 1975.

The Supreme Court in 2010 had endorsed the life sentence slapped on him by the Kathmandu district court. In 2014, the Bhaktapur district court then sentenced him for the murder of a Canadian national.

Sobhraj repeatedly filed writ petitions at the Supreme Court, demanding he gets the leniency that senior citizens over 70 years get for release from prison. He sent such applications, especially around Constitution Day, Democracy Day, and Republic Day, hoping for a presidential pardon.

Yet, the court had rejected all his writ petitions. He had also undergone heart surgery.

Law on cryptocurrency only after international collaboration, risk evaluation: Govt

0

The policy related to crypto assets and its ecosystem is with the Finance Ministry and any legislation on it would be effective only through international collaboration after proper risk evaluation, the Parliament was told on Friday.

“Crypto assets are by definition borderless and require international collaboration to prevent regulatory arbitrage. Therefore, any legislation on the subject can be effective only with significant international collaboration on evaluation of the risks and benefits and evolution of common taxonomy and standards,” Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary told the Lok Sabha in a written reply.

He was responding to a question from BJD member Bhartruhari Mahtab on the current status of the cryptocurrency bill, which was due to be tabled during the 2021 Winter session of the Parliament, and by when would it be tabled and opened for public inputs.

Mahtab had also sought to know which department would regulate cryptocurrency and crypto tokens and regulate other virtual digital assets other than cryptocurrencies such as NFT and decentralized applications.

Corbevax booster gives maximum protection, reveals Hyd hospital study

0

Amidst concerns of a new Covid wave in India following a massive surge in China and other countries, research at AIG Hospitals here has revealed that Corbevax booster in individuals vaccinated with Covishield gives maximum protection against Omicron variants.

The scientific study has proved the immunity benefits of the indigenous heterologous vaccine booster, Corbevax in combating Omicron variants.

The study titled “Heterologous booster dose with Corbevax following primary vaccination with Covishield enhances protection against SARS-CoV-2” has been published in the high-impact factor journal “Vaccines”.

Announcing the findings of the study, AIG Hospitals Chairman Dr. D Nageshwar Reddy told media persons that the study was done on 250 healthcare workers who had received 2 doses of Covishield as the primary vaccine regimen not more than 6 months ago. None of the participants had any adverse events following the administration of the Corbevax booster dose.

“We knew from our previous studies that mixed vaccines produce better immune response; therefore, when the government approved Corbevax to be given as a heterologous booster to individuals already vaccinated with Covishield, our aim was to determine how a different vaccine platform (protein-based) will impact the immune response, especially in the context of the Omicron variant,” he said.

Corbevax is an indigenously developed peptide-based vaccine that is different from the viral vector (Covishield) or the inactivated vaccine (Covaxin). The key difference is that Corbevax uses only a protein subunit of the virus replicated inside a yeast cell while the others are whole virus vaccines. The advantage of peptide-based vaccine is that it considerably reduces the risks of allergic and autoimmune responses making them safe for widespread usage.

Dr. Reddy said the results further cemented their belief that mixed vaccines are absolutely safe. “The second aspect of the study was to measure the antibody response as well as the T-cell (memory cell) response at 30 days and then at 90 days to correctly estimate the overall protection against the circulating Omicron variant.

When estimating the effectiveness of a vaccine, both the antibody response and T-cell (Memory cell) response are essential.

“In our study, we compared the immune responses among those individuals who were given the same vaccine, i.e., Covishield (homologous group) as a booster and those who were given Corbevax as a booster (heterologous group). The S1/S2-spike protein IgG antibody levels and T/B Cell response of these groups were compared at 30 days and at 90 days. While the homologous and heterologous groups showed increased S1/S2-spike protein IgG antibody level at 30 days, the heterologous group (Corbevax as a booster) showed higher levels of antibodies at both 30 days and 90 days,” Dr. Reddy said.

The study was undertaken when Omicron variants are circulating in India; therefore, it would be appropriate to say that a heterologous booster (Corbevax) would be effective in combating any wave that is fueled by sub-variants of the Omicron.

High-risk group people should consider taking the booster dose and continue to take Covid appropriate precautions all the time especially when in public spaces.

In reply to queries, Dr. Reddy said if a person has taken Covaxin double dose, he should also take Corbevax as the booster dose. “The booster dose should be from the other company as this gives more protection,” he said.

He noted that only 28 percent of people in the country have taken booster doses. Corbevax is manufactured by Hyderabad-based Biological E.

Dr. Reddy said that the vaccine is easy to manufacture and it is already available in the market at a price of Rs 250.

He suggested that China should also import Corbevax to save lives.

Dr. Reddy also made it clear that there is no need for panic as both the central and state governments are taking necessary measures and adequate stocks of vaccines and Remdesivir are available.

He believes that the number of Covid cases may increase over the next two months but from March next year, the situation will be normal.

He said people should wear masks while going to crowded places. He believes that the impact of the new variant of Omicron will not be severe.

Lily Collins in ‘Emily In Paris’ dresses like Alia Bhatt in ‘Koffee With Karan’

Hollywood actress Lily Collins was sporting the same dress in the third season of ‘Emily In Paris that Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt wore in the first season of Karan Johar’s chat show ‘Koffee With Karan Season 7 this year.

In the new season, which started airing on December 21, Collins was seen wearing a well-fitted pink and red polka-dotted dress.

YouTube inks $2 bn annual deal for NFL ‘Sunday Ticket’

Google-owned YouTube has inked a $2 billion annual deal with the National Football League to acquire exclusive rights for the Sunday Ticket, a subscription-only package that allows football fans to watch most Sunday afternoon games.

The deal will run for seven years, reports the media, citing sources. Sunday Ticket will be available in two ways starting in 2023-24 — as an add-on package on YouTube TV and as an a la carte option on YouTube Primetime Channels, where users can subscribe to specific streaming services and channels and watch movies as well.

Later, consumers will be able to subscribe only to Sunday Ticket without having a YouTube TV subscription.

However, pricing hasn’t been determined for either option, said the report.

“For a number of years we have been focused on increased digital distribution of our games and this partnership is yet another example of us looking towards the future and building the next generation of NFL fans,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was quoted as saying.

Moreover, DirecTV (an American multichannel video programming distributor) has owned the rights to Sunday Ticket since its inception in 1994, paying $1.5 billion per year since its last renewal in 2014, according to the report.

Earlier this week, Apple backed out of a deal to secure the rights to the NFL Sunday Ticket package.

According to Dylan Byers of Puck News, Apple backed out of the deal because it doesn’t “see the logic”, in closing the pricey football package.

There were reports earlier this year that Apple was close to a deal with the NFL chiefs, as Apple executive Eddy Cue spoke to them in meetings.
