Twitter suppressed Covid-19 info, suspended top experts during pandemic

0

The US government pressured Twitter to elevate certain Covid-19 information and suppress other content, while the platform suspended reputed medical professionals who disagreed with establishment views during the peak of the pandemic, new ‘Twitter Files’ have alleged.

Independent journalist David Zweig released the new ‘Twitter Files’ on how the micro-blogging platform “rigged the Covid debate”, and relied on bots and third-party contractors to moderate Covid-related topics.

“Twitter censored information that was true but inconvenient to the US government policy, discredited doctors and other experts who disagreed and suppressed ordinary users, including some sharing the CDC’s own data,” alleged Zweig.

According to him, both the incumbent Joe Biden and former Donald Trump administrations pressured Twitter and other tech giants like Google, Facebook and Microsoft to disseminate Covid information.

“Internal files at Twitter that I viewed showed that both the Trump and Biden administrations directly pressed Twitter executives to moderate the platform’s pandemic content according to their wishes,” Zweig tweeted late on Monday.

At the onset of the pandemic, according to meeting notes, “the Trump admin was especially concerned about panic buying”.

Zweig said that when the Biden administration took over, “one of their first meeting requests with Twitter executives was on Covid. The focus was on ‘anti-vaxxer accounts’. Especially Alex Berenson”.

In the summer of 2021, President Biden said social media companies were “killing people” for allowing vaccine misinformation.

“Berenson was suspended hours after Biden’s comments, and kicked off the platform the following month,” he posted.

“A December 2022 summary of meetings with the White House by Lauren Culbertson, Twitter’s Head of US Public Policy, adds new evidence of the White House’s pressure campaign, and cements that it repeatedly attempted to directly influence the platform,” Zweig added.

Twitter CEO Elon Musk said that a follow-up piece on new ‘Twitter Files’ will come next week, featuring leading doctors and researchers from Harvard, Stanford and other institutions, “many of whom were, of course, actively suppressed on Twitter”.

Credit offtake in elevated levels: CARE Ratings

0

The credit offtake in India remained at elevated levels of 17.5 per cent year-on-year (YoY), reporting robust growth for the fortnight that ended December 2, said credit rating agency CARE Ratings.

According to the CARE Rating report, the growth is driven by a low base, non-banking finance companies (NBFC), retail credit, higher working capital demand driven by inflation and improvement in capacity utilization ratio, and rising demand for fresh capex.

The benefit of a lower base is expected to ease in the next few fortnights, optically leading to lower growth rates, CARE Ratings said.

With a large base, deposits saw a slower growth at 9.9 percent y-o-y compared to credit growth of 17.5 percent for the fortnight that ended December 2.

The credit offtake expanded by over 1,000 bps due to a low base, retail credit, inflation-led working capital requirement, and MSMEs. It also increased sequentially by 1.2 percent from the immediate fortnight (ended November 18), CARE Ratings said.

Deposits rates are expected to go up further due to rising policy rates driven by higher inflation, intense competition between banks for sourcing deposits to meet strong credit demand, widening credit deposit gap, and lower liquidity in the market, said CARE Ratings.

Over the last couple of years, (i.e., from February 28, 2020) credit offtake has mostly overcome the Covid-induced lag and has grown by around 29.7 percent to almost catch up with deposit growth of 31.4 percent over the period, the credit rating agency said.

In absolute terms, credit outstanding stood at Rs 131 lakh crore as of December 2, rising by Rs 19.5 lakh crore over the last 12 months.

According to CARE Ratings, the credit offtake is anticipated to remain resilient in FY23, while the benefit of a lower base will ease out in the next few fortnights, optically leading to lower growth rates.

A slowdown in global growth due to elevated interest rates, interminable pandemic restrictions in China, and multiple rate hikes in India could impact credit growth, the CARE Rating report said.

Bommai meets Shah in Delhi to discuss K’taka Cabinet expansion

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Monday met Union Home Minister Amit Shah at his residence in the national capital to discuss some key issues including the Karnataka Cabinet expansion.

According to a source, issues related to the upcoming Assembly elections in Karnataka, Lok Sabha polls, and Karnataka Cabinet expansion would be discussed during the meeting between the two Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders.

The meeting between Bommai and Shah lasted over four hours.

“With pressure mounting from former ministers K.S. Eshwarappa and Ramesh Jarkiholi, who have demanded their re-induction into the Karnataka Cabinet, the issue is likely to come up for discussion when Bommai meets senior BJP leaders in the national capital,” a source had earlier said.

The Karnataka assembly elections are likely to be held in April-May next year. With less than six months left for the assembly elections, the BJP has been holding a series of meetings in Karnataka as well as in Delhi.

India now better placed to qualify for world Test championship final

0

After the 2-0 series win over Bangladesh, India have given themselves a reasonable chance of qualifying for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final, thereby having another crack at lifting the most coveted trophy in world cricket.

India lost to New Zealand at the ultimate stage in Southampton in 2021.

The WTC played as a two-year league between the top nine Test-playing sides and then a knockout final between the two teams who emerge with the highest points, which is in its second cycle after the inaugural competition in 2021-23. The final this time will be played at The Oval in London in June.

Australia top the table with 76.92 percent points secured out of the total points available to them, with India in second place with 58.93 percent points. A win gives a side 12 points, a tie six points, and a draw four points.

Australia has played 13 Tests so far and have six more to play the current one in Melbourne and another in Sydney against South Africa and then a four-Test series in India India has played 14 Tests and has the encounter with Australia left in their schedule.

It is virtually certain that the Aussies will enter the final. In a worst-case scenario, if they win the current Test at Melbourne against South Africa, but lose the next at Sydney and gown down 1-3 to India away in February-March, they will still muster 63.15 percent of available points.

If India defeats the Aussies 3-1 at home, they will finish with 62.5 percent of the available points. However, if the series is drawn, India will have 56.94 percent points. In both cases, taking into account five penalty points imposed on them because of slow overrates. India cannot afford to lose the series.

Snapping at India’s heels are South Africa and Sri Lanka. If the former split the results in the next two Tests Down Under, they will drop from their current 54.55 percent to 53.84 percent.

The Sri Lankans have two remaining Tests in their fixtures away in New Zealand. In the best case, they could draw the series; in which case, they will conclude their campaign with 52.78 percent, slipping from 53.33 percent.

In their last three tours of India, Australia has lost 2-0, 4-0, and 2-1 in the 4-Test series. In the most recent clash in 2016-17, the Australians certainly narrowed the gap in terms of their abilities vis-a-vis India in Indian conditions. Earlier this year, they won a series in Pakistan to reinforce their progress.

Versus the West Indies and now South Africa, the Australian middle order of Marcus Labuschagne, Steve Smith and Travis Head has displayed a rich vein of form. While the incisiveness of off-spinner Nathan Lyon, not to mention the fast bowlers led by Pat Cummins, is undiminished.

India, on the other hand, is left scratching their heads after the Bangladesh series. Virat Kohli and K.L Rahul’s failure against spin is a major worry as is the potential of the bowling attack against a batting line-up of Australia’s caliber.

Rohit Sharma’s return should bolster the top order, but it may not be a bad idea for all contenders for a place in the Indian squad to return to Ranji Trophy cricket in January as preparation for the series.

Besides, while Shreyas Iyer looked sublime in Bangladesh, the Australian pace attack is likely to bowl short to him. The bounce in the pitches may not assist the visiting quicks much; but in his two innings against England at Birmingham in the summer, it didn’t go unnoticed that he got out to rising deliveries on both occasions.

Meanwhile, England’s talismen of the past and present — Lord Ian Botham and incumbent skipper Ben Stokes — engaged in conversation on BBC Radio on Boxing Day.

The latter and the team head coach Brendon McCullum have excitingly revolutionized Test cricket with an audacious limited overs approach to the five-day format.

Stokes spelled out his mantra to Botham, who was acting as guest editor on Radio Four’s Today program.

“Taking the result away from the mindset is a great starting point. Putting a focus on making every day entertaining. Not allowing people to know what is going to happen. If people turn up excited about what they are going to watch you’ve already won before a ball has been bowled,” he said.

Botham, England’s premier all-rounder of the 1980s, responded: “If we lose Test cricket, we lose cricket as we know it.”

It’s too late for England to enter the 2021-23 WTC final. But the way they have blown away opposition since last summer, including white-washing Pakistan away, they could pose a major threat in the 2023-2025 championship.

Aditya Rawal had to sit for 2 hours daily for his ‘Aar Ya Paar’ make-up, prep

Actor Aditya Rawal, who is gearing up for his streaming show, ‘Aar Ya Paar’, has shared that for his part as a tribesman in the series, he has used a wig, body makeup, tattoos, and accessories. It took him two hours every day to get done with the pre-role preparation in terms of makeup.

Elaborating on the same, he said: “It was very challenging to put together. I hope the audience likes it. It involved a wig, body make-up, tattoos, and accessories. At first, I found the two-hour prep time rather difficult but eventually it helped me to focus and the process lent a sort of meditative quality. Sid sir and the writing team devised the dialect.”

The series follows the journey of Sarju (played by Aditya) with a formidable talent in archery. He fights for the survival of his tribe against the modern world, it’s corrupt political and financial machinery, that catapults him into the world of big crime as he emerges to be a deadly mercenary assassin.

Talking about the language used in the series, the actor further mentioned: “It was an amalgamation of 4-5 regional dialects. Our wonderful dialect coaches Saurabh and Prabhat were even on-set. I am truly grateful for the hair, make-up, tattoo, and costume teams. They were all such a pleasure to work with.”

The action-drama, which also stars Patralekha, Sumeet Vyas, Ashish Vidyarthi, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Aasif Sheikh, Shilpa Shukla, Varun Bhagat, Nakul Sehdev, will stream on Disney+ Hotstar from December 30, 2022.

Anushka Sharma wraps up ‘Chakda ‘Xpress’, Jhulan Goswami gives clap on final shot

Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma has wrapped up the filming of the biopic ‘Chakda ‘Xpress’. The film’s shoot was completed on Monday.

The film is inspired by the incredible story of one of the fastest female pacers in the history of world cricket, Jhulan Goswami as she moves up the ladder, despite the countless hindrances, to fulfill her only dream — to play cricket.

Anushka, who underwent extensive training and outdoor schedules for the film and was also questioned over her portrayal of the cricketer, took to her Instagram to announce the wrap-up of the film.

Jhulan became the highest wicket-taker in the history of women’s cricket and an inspiration to an entire generation of sportswomen.

The clap for the film’s final shot was given by the cricketer herself.

Anushka captioned the pictures: “It’s a wrap on #ChakdaXpress and thank you @JhulanGoswami for the final clap to bring an end to the shoot!”

The actress posted several pictures from the wrap, which show her donning the jersey of Team India and cutting the cake with director Prosit Roy and Jhulan.

What is Covid variant XBB that accounts for more than 18% of US cases?

0

The XBB subvariant of Covid-19’s Omicron variant is fast emerging as the dominant type in India, and now it accounts for more than 18 percent of cases in the US as well.

According to the WHO, XBB is a recombined subvariant, a sub-lineage of the Omicron variants BA.2.10.1 and BA.2.75 which means it is a subvariant of the Covid-19 Omicron variant, not a new variant.

The WHO says that while further studies are needed, the current data do not suggest there are substantial differences in disease severity for XBB infections.

However, early evidence points to a higher re-infection risk compared to other circulating Omicron sublineages.

As of now, there are no data to support escape from recent immune responses induced by other Omicron lineages, said the WHO.

Moreover, there is currently no epidemiological evidence that points to these sublineages having a significantly higher risk than other Omicron sublines, however, this assessment is based on data from sentinel nations and is not fully generalizable to other settings, it added.

XBB has a global prevalence of 1.3 percent and it has been detected in 35 countries.

Among the Indian patients, the disease is mild like with other Omicron sub-lineages, and no increase in severity is noted, according to the Indian SARS Cov-2 Genomics Consortium.

Meanwhile, as a WhatsApp message has been making its rounds claiming that the newly discovered XBB subvariant of Omicron is five times more virulent and has a higher mortality rate than the Delta variant, the Union Health Ministry has rejected the claim and has termed the message fake.

“This message circulating in many WhatsApp groups regarding XXB variant of Covid-19 is FAKE and Misleading,” it said on Thursday.

The viral message claims that “the new variant of the Covid-Omicron XBB coronavirus is different, deadly, and not easy to detect correctly. The symptoms of the new virus Covid-Omicron XBB are – there is no cough and there is no fever.”

China hands over daily Covid data duty to local CDC as nations seek transparency

0

China’s National Health Commission (NHC) has stopped publishing daily Covid-19 case data, handing over the charge to the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as nations including India ask the country to share actual Covid data on an urgent basis.

According to state-run Global Times, handing over the epidemic data calculation to a technical organization “is a reasonable move to provide professional epidemic figures”.

“The NHC will no longer release daily epidemic data from Sunday. China’s CDC will release relevant COVID-19 information for study and reference,” the NHC said in a statement.

According to local experts, the move will help shift more resources of related authorities to other key steps like clinical treatment.

It is believed, the CDC will largely rely on COVID-19 data reported by clinical diagnosis in medical institutions and monitor overall epidemic trends.

China’s NHC began to release the daily new tally on January 21, 2020, when epidemic experts identified that the virus could spread among humans.

However, it will still take days for the CDC to activate the epidemic monitor reporting system and allow the organization to collect and report infection data effectively.

The organization will roll out the plan in the coming days.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said last week that he is “very concerned over the evolving situation in China” and appealed for specific data on disease severity, hospital admissions, and intensive care requirements.

The reports from China suggest that the Omicron BF.7 variant is behind the surge in the country.

Indian officials and experts feel that China’s censorship on actual Covid infection data sharing is a major concern for the world as countries prepare to navigate another potential wave.

80% of new smartphones will be 5G-enabled in India by 2023: ICEA

0

As India rides on 5G with more than 50 cities and towns now enjoying the new technology, the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) Chairman Pankaj Mohindroo said on Monday that by the end of 2023, 75-80 per cent of the new smartphone launches will be 5G-enabled.

The 5G services were launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 1.

Telecom service providers have launched the service in select cities and plan to cover the entire nation by the end of 2023 or early 2024.

“India as a nation is an early adopter of 5G technology. This 5G technology has opened a vast opportunity for a new generation of telecom equipment manufacturers, application providers, and internet of things (IoT), machine-2-machine (M2M), and healthcare services, among others,” Mohindroo told IANS.

The mobile device ecosystem was an early starter for manufacturing 5G phones.

Even before the launch of 5G services, approximately 80-100 million 5G-compatible phones were already in the market.

5G will represent around 53 percent of mobile subscriptions in India by 2028, with 690 million users, according to ‘Ericsson Mobility Report’.

5G subscriptions in India were expected to reach around 31 million by the end of 2022.

In the semiconductor industry, Mohindroo said that the Indian semiconductor market was $15 billion in 2020 and expected to reach $63 billion by 2023 at a 30 percent CAGR.

“This is a huge opportunity for the nation. The government is very focused on setting up the entire semiconductor ecosystem in the country from semiconductor fab, compound semiconductors, discrete semiconductors, assembly, testing, marking, and packaging (ATMP) units, etc,” said Mohindroo.

The India Semiconductor Mission offers an incentive outlay of Rs 76,000 crore for the development of semiconductor ecosystem in India, offering fiscal support of 50 percent of the project cost.

“We feel that the next focus should be ensuring skilling of the workforce for the sector and incentivizing the downstream value chain in semiconductor manufacturing,” he said.

Netanyahu vows not to allow anti-LGBT laws in Israel

0

Israel’s Prime Minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu pledged that his coalition government will not pass bills allowing discrimination against LGBTs and denying them access to services.

His remarks came in response to statements by two of his extreme-right partners, in which they vowed to pass laws allowing physicians and business owners to discriminate against LGBT people, Xinhua news agency reported.

Orit Struck, a lawmaker with the pro-settler Religious Zionist Party, said in an interview with the state-owned Kan radio that her party is determined to change Israel’s anti-discrimination law so that it would permit doctors to avoid acts that contradict their religious beliefs.

Simcha Rotman, another lawmaker with the party, told Kan radio that owners of private businesses, such as hotels and restaurants, would be allowed to refuse service to LGBTQ people “if it harms their religious sentiments.”

In a rare rebuke of his extreme-right partners, Netanyahu issued a video statement, saying that the remarks were “unacceptable.”

According to Netanyahu, “the coalition agreements do not permit discrimination against LGBTs or to harm their rights to receive services as any other citizen in Israel”.

Netanyahu announced last week that he succeeded in forming a new coalition government with three far-right parties and two Jewish ultra-Orthodox parties. The new government, which is expected to be sworn in by Thursday, will be the most rightist in Israeli history and includes many members who openly oppose LGBT rights.

90 sheeps, 8 vultures die after being hit by train in UP

0

Nearly 90 sheep and eight vultures were killed on Sunday after being hit by two trains in Uttar Pradesh’s Balrampur district.

The incident took place in the Pachperwa police station area, near the Saryu bridge. According to reports, the cattle were attacked by dogs and ran towards the railway track where they were hit by the train.

A few hours later, vultures gathered over the cattle carcass when they, too, were hit by another train.

UP: After Agra, Unnao youth tests Covid positive

0

After Agra, Uttar Pradesh has got its second case of Covid in the Unnao district. A young man traveling to Dubai got himself tested and has been reported as Covid positive.

Sub-District Magistrate Ankit Shukla and the Health Department team reached the youth’s house and samples of 20 people, including the family members of the child, were taken.

The local administration has isolated the youth under the Covid protocol. Apart from this, his report will be sent for genome sequencing. This young man is a resident of Koraura village of Hasanganj tehsil area of Unnao.

It may be recalled that on Sunday, a 40-year-old man, who returned from China two days back, tested positive for Covid-19 after which he was isolated at his home in Agra, chief medical officer Arun Srivastava. His samples will be sent to Lucknow for genome sequencing, he said.

“The man has been isolated at his home and teams of the health department have been asked to conduct tests of his family members and those who came in contact with him,” Srivastava added.

The man returned to Agra from China via Delhi on December 23 following which he was tested at a private lab. The report came out positive for Covid, he added. This is the first Covid positive case in the district detected after November 25, officials said.

Rishi Sunak mocked for ‘excruciating’ exchange with homeless man

0

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has been criticized over an awkward exchange with a homeless person while volunteering at a soup kitchen in front of television cameras, according to a media report.

Sunak visited a shelter on Friday, where after a brief exchange he asked the man whether he worked in business, The Guardian reported.

The man replied that he was homeless. Sunak then discussed his background in the finance industry and asked if it would be something the man would “like to get into”.

The man replied: “I wouldn’t mind, but I don’t know, I’d like to get through Christmas first,” The Guardian reported.

He explained that he hoped a charity would find him some temporary accommodation so that he is not on the street for Christmas.

Labour’s deputy leader, Angela Rayner, described the exchange as excruciating, while Labour MP Stella Creasy said: “Watching this, I am concerned that the Prime Minister thinks homeless means doesn’t have a country pile at the moment’.”

Sunak used the trip to outline that the government had pledged 2 billion pounds to tackle homelessness and rough sleeping over three years.
