AUS vs SA: Cameron Green ruled out of Sydney Test with finger injury

0

Australia’s injury woes continue to worsen as young all-rounder Cameron Green has broken a bone in his finger and will miss the upcoming third Test against South Africa in Sydney which begins on January 4, Cricket Australia confirmed on Wednesday.

Green was struck on the finger by a rising Anrich Nortje delivery while batting late on the second day of the ongoing second Test against the Proteas and was forced to retire hurt. Scans have revealed that Green has a small fracture to his right index finger and Australia won’t take any risks with the in-form 23-year-old ahead of a hectic upcoming schedule.

While Green will bat again at the MCG if required, the right-arm won’t get the chance to repeat his first-innings heroics with the ball when South Africa bats again in Melbourne.

The all-rounder picked up his maiden five-wicket haul on the opening day of the Boxing Day Test, stepping up admirably after veteran quick Mitchell Starc picked up a finger injury of his own while fielding on day one.

While the severity of Starc’s injury is yet to be fully revealed, it is unlikely the left arm will be available to bowl during the remainder of the second Test and Australia will be devoid of two of their best bowling options. If Starc was not able to bowl, it would place a heavy burden on captain Pat Cummins, fellow quick Scott Boland, and Nathan Lyon when South Africa bats again in Melbourne.

The left-arm pacer has bowled and batted in the nets since hurting his finger but while coach Andrew McDonald insisted Starc would be able to play on through the second Test, he admitted his injury would severely restrict his involvement.

“He’ll play a role with both bat and ball throughout the course of the game. He’ll be limited. His capabilities will probably not be as full as he would like. But he’ll be able to do a role for us, so that’s a positive sign this morning, McDonald told SEN on Wednesday morning.

“We’ve got a lot of work to still do here. We’ve got a few in the casualty ward and that’s going to limit our capacity to press the whole time in the second innings,” he added.

Green, who was picked by Mumbai Indians for a whopping Rs 17.5 crore in the recent IPL 2023 mini-auction, will sit out next week’s third and final Test against the Proteas at the SCG to ensure he recovers in time for the crucial four-match series in India starting in February.

The clash against India for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy will be crucial in determining which sides qualify for next year’s ICC World Test Championship final.

Australia currently sits on top of the standings and is in the box seat to book a place in the 2023 decider, while India is holding on to the second spot following their recent series sweep over Bangladesh.

UNSC reiterates call for women’s equal participation in Afghanistan

0

The UN Security Council has reiterated its call for full participation of women and girls in Afghan society, expressing concern about the Taliban’s latest ban on female students from going to universities.

“Deeply alarmed” by reports that the Taliban have suspended access to universities for women and girls, the Council on Tuesday reiterated its concern over the suspension of school beyond the sixth grade and its call for “the full, equal and meaningful participation of women and girls in Afghanistan”, Xinhua news agency.

The Council called on the Taliban regime “to reopen schools and swiftly reverse these policies and practices”, which represent “an increasing erosion of the respect of human rights and fundamental freedoms”.

Council members are “furthermore profoundly concerned” by reports that the Taliban have banned female employees of non-governmental organizations (NGO) and international organizations from going to work, which would have a significant and immediate impact on humanitarian operations in the country, including those of the UN, and the delivery of aid and health work.

These restrictions contradict the commitments made by the Taliban to the Afghan people and the expectations of the international community, the council said.

On December 20, the Taliban’s Education Ministry announced the indefinite suspension of university education for female students all across the war-torn nation.

After the country fell to the Taliban in August 2021, universities introduced gender-segregated classrooms and entrances.

Female students could only be taught by women professors or old men.

Just a few days later on December 25, the regime also banned women from working in NGOs, saying that female staffers had broken dress codes by not wearing hijabs.

Team Australia visits Sydney Harbour ahead of inaugural United Cup

0

Alex de Minaur and Ajla Tomljanovic are among the stars leading Team Australia at the inaugural United Cup, however, before play begins at the Ken Rosewall Arena this week, the host nation took the opportunity to swap the practice courts for the city when they visited Campbells Cove, here on Tuesday.

De Minaur, Tomljanovic, Jason Kubler, and Zoe Hives posed for photos by the Sydney Harbour Bridge ahead of the 11-day event.

“We thrive playing for our country, representing the green and gold. There is always a lot of passion and pride and it is a great time of the year. We are in the Aussie summer, ready to start 2023. There is no better place to be,” de Minaur was quoted as saying by ATP.

“Aussies thrive in team competitions. You see with the Billie Jean King Cup and Davis Cup, we made finals and I don’t think many people would have picked us to be in the last two standing,” Tomljanovic said.

“When I played for Australia for the first time, the camaraderie and the vibe of the team over that week was great. We see each other a lot during the year but don’t get to talk much. But when we come together it is like we have never left, so it is something in the culture,” she added.

The United Cup, a mixed-teams event consisting of 18 nations, will be contested in Brisbane, Perth, and Sydney, with four countries advancing to the knockout stage in Sydney. Each United Cup tie will comprise two men’s and two women’s singles matches and one mixed double match to be played across two days, with the tournament running from 29 December-8 January.

Team Australia, spearheaded by Nick Kyrgios, will start its title quest against Team Great Britain on Thursday. Team Spain, led by Rafael Nadal and Paula Badosa, is also in Group D.

“It is exciting. It is a new event in tennis. Innovating in this great sport and I think it will bring a new audience. We have a tough group, but we are happy being the underdogs. We just have to give it our all, that’s all we can ask for ourselves,” de Minaur said.

My coaches Ashish Limaye, Sanyogeeta Limaye from EIRS, and Bobin sir from ARC stood as pillars for me all the time whenever I needed them for counseling and guidance. I must give kudos to the magical horse Abra Kadabra owned by my trainer Sanyogeeta Limaye. I won both my individual golds on that horse, he took me through my first-ever cross-country track like a pro and danced like a star in the freestyle dressage. Over 829 mn cyber attacks blocked in Q4: Report

0

More than 829 million cyber attacks were blocked during the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2022, globally, of which 59 percent of the websites were in India.

According to the application security company Indusface, the report mentioned a sharp rise in the intensity and frequency of DDoS and Bot attacks in Q4 compared to Q3.

“In this quarter, we saw almost 20 applications of a healthcare customer get targeted by DDoS attacks. We also saw a SaaS application hit with a 2TB attack. In both cases, the attacks were quickly thwarted with AI sending out anomaly alerts and a managed services team deploying surgical rules,” said Ashish Tandon Founder and CEO, of Indusface.

The report says that mid-market companies with revenues between $10 million to $1 billion have been subjected to 45 percent of the cyberattacks, and only 21 percent were large enterprises with over $1 billion in revenue.

Small businesses, on the other hand, accounted for 34 percent of attacks, implying that every business is vulnerable to such attacks.

However, the ability to create custom rules has stood out as a key enabler of cyber security.

On average, each enterprise deploys 48 custom rules, and 60 percent of all attacks were blocked using these custom rules, according to the report.

The report also highlights the increase in ‘virtual patching’ as a measure to protect applications at the Web Application Firewall level.

DDoS attacks affected 32 percent of all apps during the last 60 days of the observation period, said the report.

The top three segments vulnerable to the attacks were banking, insurance, and other finance companies, followed by IT services and manufacturing companies.

SaaS/IT products and Retail/e-commerce also have a decent representation of 9 percent each.

In terms of region, 59 percent of the websites were in India, with the remaining 23 percent in the US and Canada, the report added.

Biden approves federal aid to New York amid deadly blizzard

0

US President Joe Biden has approved an emergency declaration for New York amid the ongoing deadly blizzard as requested by state Governor Kathy Hochul.

In a statement late Monday, the White House said the President “declared that an emergency exists” in the state and “ordered federal assistance to supplement state and local response efforts due to the emergency conditions resulting from a severe winter storm beginning on December 23”.

“The President’s action authorizes the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), to coordinate all disaster relief efforts which have the purpose of alleviating the hardship and suffering caused by the emergency on the local population, and to provide appropriate assistance for required emergency measures,” the statement added.

As of Monday, New York recorded at least 27 deaths from the ongoing winter storm, bringing the total casualties in the US to 55.

Erie County confirmed 25 deaths from the massive storm, according to Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz.

The ongoing blizzard has caused more deaths in Erie County than the blizzard of 1977, which led to 23 storm-related deaths in western New York. Meanwhile, the region around Buffalo has been the worst affected.

Biden’s move came in response to Hochul’s request who said that “it is (like) going to a war zone, and the vehicles along the sides of the roads are shocking”.

She said residents were facing a “life-threatening situation”, as many emergency vehicles were unable to reach worst-hit areas or got stuck in snow themselves.

Numerous State highways in New York continue to remain closed to all traffic.

Heavy snow is expected to continue to impact areas off Lake Ontario and Lake Erie this week. Another one to two feet of snow is expected east of Lake Ontario through Tuesday, with snowfall rates of three inches per hour on Monday.

The Buffalo area is expected to receive up to an additional foot of snow over the next few days before temperatures rise later this week and through the weekend.

The “bomb cyclone” winter storm — which occurs when atmospheric pressure plummets, causing heavy snow and winds — has disrupted travel across the US.

Forecasters say it will ease off in the next few days, but the advice remains to avoid traveling unless essential.

SRK hugs Salman on his 57th b’day, fans overwhelmed

Fans of Bollywood superstars Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan can now proudly say “Karan-Arjun aa gaye (Karan-Arjun are here finally)!”. Salman was greeted by the ‘Pathaan’ star on his birthday.

SRK hugged Salman as he hosted a joint party with his sister Arpita Khan, whose daughter Ayat Sharma, who shares her birthday with the actor, turned three on Tuesday. Among the host of celebs, including Pooja Hegde, Kartik Aaryan, Suniel Shetty, Tabu, Sangeeta Bijlani, and Shah Rukh grabbed the most attention.

The videos of the two superstars sharing a sweet moment in embrace are doing rounds on the Internet. The fans were left in awe as the two shared the frames together.

A netizen wrote about Salman and Shah Rukh Khan’s bond, “The best, most intimate and close friendship in Bollywood.” Another fan on Instagram also said the moment reminded him of Shah Rukh and Salman attending politician Baba Siddique’s Iftaar party in 2013, where they ended their years-long cold war by giving each other a warm hug.

SRK and Salman’s friendship has stood the test of time despite two major fights between the two – One during the making of ‘Chalte Chalte’ when Salman regularly showed up on sets and created ruckus over his girlfriend Aishwarya Rai which resulted in the actress getting ousted from the film and replaced by Rani Mukerji.

The second was during Katrina Kaif’s birthday back in 2008 when the two superstars came at loggerheads over their respective reality television game shows.

Immigrant graduates earn more than US-born peers: Study

0

Immigrant graduates in the US, including Indians, are more likely to be better educated and earn more compared to their American-born peers with college degrees, says a study by the Washington-based Migration Policy Institute (MPI).

College-educated immigrants in the US are more likely to have advanced degrees and major in STEM and health fields than their US-born peers with college degrees.

The study found that 60 percent of immigrant college graduates have at least a master’s degree versus 53 percent of the college-educated US-born.

Fifty-one percent of immigrants’ degrees are concentrated in the high-demand STEM and health fields versus a mere 36 percent in those held by the US-born.

Furthermore, two-thirds of immigrants in the PIAAC (Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies) sample earned their highest degree in the US.

It is precisely due to this reason that the average monthly earnings of immigrant college graduates exceed those of US-born graduates.

Full-time, college-educated immigrant workers have higher monthly earnings of $7,140 compared to their US-born counterparts at $6,500.

However, despite these largely favourable outcomes, one-fifth of immigrant college graduates see their skills underutilized, said the study targeting the 25-65 age group.

MPI estimated that about two million college-educated immigrants in the US worked in jobs that required no more than a high school degree or were unemployed as of 2019.

This outcome is a result of lower levels of English proficiency, licensing barriers, limited social and professional networks, and other issues.

The study added that immigrants’ literacy, numeracy, and digital skills are also likely to play a role.

Telangana: BRS assets up by 66% during 2021-22

The assets of Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), which recently rechristened itself as Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), have grown by over 66 percent during 2021-22.

The annual audited accounts and annual report of contributions submitted by the party to the Election Commission of India (ECI) show that its current assets have gone up to Rs 480 crore from Rs 288 crore in 2020-21.

The party’s income during the same period jumped by a whopping 480 percent from Rs 37.65 crore to Rs 218.11 crore.

During 2021-22, the party led by Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao earned Rs 153 crore through electoral bonds and another Rs 40 crore through electoral trusts. The party had no income under these two heads during the previous year.

Annual fees/subscriptions from members came down to Rs 7.54 crore from Rs 16.70 crore. There were no donations or contributions from companies during the year while the party received Rs 3.15 crore from companies in 2020-21.

The party incurred election expenditure of Rs 7.68 crore in 2021-22 against Rs 4.79 crore in 2020-21. The opening balance for the year ending March 31, 2022, was Rs 307 crore against Rs 292 crore the previous year.

The statement also shows that the party’s balance with scheduled banks for more than 12 months maturity period was Rs 451 crore in 2021-22 against Rs 256 crore in 2020-21.

At TRS plenary in April, the party president and Chief Minister KCR had said that the party was Rs 1,000 crore entity which is sufficient enough for him to jump into national politics.

Kim Kardashian is having ‘really hard’ time co-parenting with Kanye

Kim Kardashian recently shared how the co-parenting situation going with her former husband, Kanye West.

During a Monday guest spot on the ‘Angie Martinez IRL’ podcast, the 42-year-old ‘Kardashians’ star discussed the highly controversial artiste and their four children, reports People magazine.

“Co-parenting is really f***ing hard,” Kardashian said, as she was brought to tears.

The former couple, who share daughters North, 9, Chicago, 4, and sons Saint, 6, and Psalm, 3, finalized their highly-publicized divorce in November, following West’s on-and-off social media play-by-play of the situation.

As per ‘People’, despite what is going on with West, Kardashian stands by the decision to shield their children from what plays out online and says she is doing her best.

“If they don’t know things that are being said, why would I ever bring that energy to them? That is real, heavy, grownup s— that they are not ready to deal with,” she said, quoted by ‘People’.

“When they are, we will have those conversations. One day, my kids will thank me for not sitting here and bashing their dad. I could,” she added.

“I definitely protected him,” she said in the interview, “and I still will in the eyes of my kids. For my kids. So, in my home, my kids don’t know anything that goes on (in) the outside world.”

Avoid travelling to these 7 countries this New Year as Covid surges

0

Amid a surge in Covid cases globally, travelers need to avoid at least seven countries while planning for a New Year trip. Several countries are expected to impose travel restrictions in the New Year to prevent infections from surging among their population.

China tops the list while avoiding foreign travel as the country is reporting a record number of infections. Chinese officials estimate about 250 million people (18 percent of the population) were infected with Covid-19 in the first 20 days of December, as Beijing abruptly dismantled restrictions that had contained the disease for almost three years.

Various countries, including India, have started screening travelers coming from China.

Japan is currently reporting more than 2 lakh new Covid cases every day, and should not be on your travel list.

Japan’s health authorities reported that 371 deaths were caused by Covid virus in the country in a single day, the highest in a day since the pandemic began in 2020. Japan is coping with the eighth wave of the pandemic.

The US is also registering a sudden surge in Covid as over 15 lakh cases were reported in the country in the past 28 days. The total number of Covid cases passed the 100 million mark on December 21.

Amid rising influenza and RSV cases in America, the so-called “tripledemic”, could further strain the overburdened US health system.

South Korea reported more than 68,000 cases in a single day on December 23. The country’s new Covid-19 cases fell below 30,000 on Monday due to fewer tests during the Christmas weekend.

The country confirmed 25,545 new coronavirus infections, including 67 from overseas, bringing the total to 28,684,600, Yonhap news agency reported, citing the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA).

Brazil is also reporting a high number of Covid cases as well, while Germany has been registering more than 40,000 cases daily in the past few days, as per media reports.

France has also reported more than 10 lakh cases in the past 28 days, and the cases are also going up.

India, meanwhile, reported 196 fresh Covid cases on December 26 against the previous day’s 227 counts, according to the Health Ministry data.

Twitter suppressed Covid-19 info, suspended top experts during pandemic

0

The US government pressured Twitter to elevate certain Covid-19 information and suppress other content, while the platform suspended reputed medical professionals who disagreed with establishment views during the peak of the pandemic, new ‘Twitter Files’ have alleged.

Independent journalist David Zweig released the new ‘Twitter Files’ on how the micro-blogging platform “rigged the Covid debate”, and relied on bots and third-party contractors to moderate Covid-related topics.

“Twitter censored information that was true but inconvenient to the US government policy, discredited doctors and other experts who disagreed and suppressed ordinary users, including some sharing the CDC’s own data,” alleged Zweig.

According to him, both the incumbent Joe Biden and former Donald Trump administrations pressured Twitter and other tech giants like Google, Facebook and Microsoft to disseminate Covid information.

“Internal files at Twitter that I viewed showed that both the Trump and Biden administrations directly pressed Twitter executives to moderate the platform’s pandemic content according to their wishes,” Zweig tweeted late on Monday.

At the onset of the pandemic, according to meeting notes, “the Trump admin was especially concerned about panic buying”.

Zweig said that when the Biden administration took over, “one of their first meeting requests with Twitter executives was on Covid. The focus was on ‘anti-vaxxer accounts’. Especially Alex Berenson”.

In the summer of 2021, President Biden said social media companies were “killing people” for allowing vaccine misinformation.

“Berenson was suspended hours after Biden’s comments, and kicked off the platform the following month,” he posted.

“A December 2022 summary of meetings with the White House by Lauren Culbertson, Twitter’s Head of US Public Policy, adds new evidence of the White House’s pressure campaign, and cements that it repeatedly attempted to directly influence the platform,” Zweig added.

Twitter CEO Elon Musk said that a follow-up piece on new ‘Twitter Files’ will come next week, featuring leading doctors and researchers from Harvard, Stanford and other institutions, “many of whom were, of course, actively suppressed on Twitter”.
