US winter storm death toll reaches 62

0

At least 62 people have died in the US due to the catastrophic winter storm that continues to wreak havoc across the country since it started on December 22, officials said.

Erie County in New York has reported 37 deaths, the highest in the country as crews continue to clear roads and first responders are checking on people they couldn’t reach days ago, reports media.

The remaining 25 fatalities were reported across 11 states.

“It’s a horrible storm with too many deaths,” Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz said at a news conference on Wednesday as he praised first responders, without whom “more people would have died”.

“We are fearful that there are individuals who may have perished living alone or people who were not doing well in an establishment, especially those that still don’t have power,” he added.

The storm buried the city of Buffalo in Erie County in nearly 52 inches of snow, trapping residents at home, many without heat as the Christmas weekend blizzard took out power lines.

Also on Wednesday, Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph A. Gramaglia told media that he expects rising temperatures in the coming days will melt the snow and uncover more storm victims.

In a statement, Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown said: “People got stranded in their vehicles and passed away in their cars. We have people that were walking during blizzard conditions and passed away on the street, passed away in snowbanks.

“And we have people that were found that passed away in their homes.”

Elsewhere in the US, more than 70,000 customers were without power in Washington and Oregon as of Wednesday afternoon, according to outage tracker PowerOutage.us.

The storm is expected to “linger into the upcoming weekend”, the Weather Prediction Center said, adding that some areas could get up to six inches of rainfall.

A surge of heavy rain or mountain snow is also expected on the west and the US south on Thursday and could continue through the end of the week, according to the Center.

In Canada, some residents are still battling power cuts as a result of the storm, including about 19,000 customers in the province of Quebec, public utility provider Hydro-Quebec said on Wednesday.

In Ontario, more than 10,000 customers were still without power, according to power supplier Hydro One.

Tourist from Argentina tests Covid positive, goes missing

0

A tourist from Argentina, who visited the Taj Mahal on December 26, has tested positive for Covid-19.

His samples were collected during screening at the monument’s Western gate to test for the virus as a precautionary measure.

The RT-PCR report, which came out on Wednesday, confirmed that the man was Covid-19 positive.

However, he went missing soon after he was informed about it by the authorities, said the health department officials.

The phone number and name of the hotel provided by him are also incorrect, which has made tracking him down difficult for the authorities.

The health department has now asked the local intelligence unit, airport authority, ASI, and nearby hotels to get details of the missing man.

Chief medical officer, Agra, Arun Kumar Srivastava said, “We are trying to identify the tourist from Argentina who has tested Covid-19 positive. The contact details provided by him are wrong. Hotels have been asked to provide details of tourists from Argentina who have recently checked in. We have also approached the ASI and airport authority to get details of the man. Once found, he will be isolated to prevent the further spread of the disease.”

Meanwhile, over 30,000 tourists visited the Taj Mahal on Wednesday. Visitors waited in queues close to each other to enter the monument after screening at the Western and Eastern gates.

Besides, in Mathura district, vigilance has been enhanced in the Vrindavan town where foreign devotees come in large numbers around New Year.

Twitter web faces major outage across US

0

Micro-blogging platform Twitter on Thursday faced a major outage across the US on the web version.

The platform showed error messages to several users, “Something went wrong, but don’t fret — it’s not your fault. Let’s try again.”

According to downdetector.com, a website that monitors online outages, around 10,000 reports were noted for Twitter across the US.

Taking to the micro-blogging platform many users reported the issue.

While one user asked, “Is Twitter down on PC or am I just getting crazy?”, another said, “Twitter just logged me out of my desktop version. I go to log in and it says I’m already logged in and gives me this message. Anybody else’s doing this?”

In July, the micro-blogging platform suffered a mega outage as several users across the world had error messages like “this page is down”.

Several users had also faced “over capacity” error messages across Twitter web, mobile, and the TweetDeck app.

3 women arrested in UP on charges of religious conversion

0

Three women have been arrested after police booked seven persons for allegedly harassing a family of the Nishad community to undergo religious conversion in Uttar Pradesh’s Balrampur district.

The accused allegedly threatened the family to either do what was asked or leave the locality, police said.

An FIR has been lodged under various sections, including the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021, against the seven accused.

A police official said the incident took place at the minority-dominated Jafrabad locality where a family of one Deepa Nishad, the complainant, lives.

The family was allegedly harassed by their neighbors. He said the FIR was lodged against three women — Sahajadi, Moharma, and Sahiba — and four men Amirzade, Irfan, Sonu, and Afreed.

Balrampur Superintendent of Police Rajesh Kumar Saxena said the three women had been arrested and more arrests will follow as the matter was being investigated.

The complainant said the seven persons often pressured her to sell her house situated in the Muslim-dominated locality. The neighbors also allegedly threatened to kill her and her family.

Another police official said the complainant further alleged that the three arrested women had once barged inside her house and spit on the temple set up by the family in May, an incident that she had video recorded.

He said the police took action against the offenders after she released the video. He added the offenders were booked under charges of religious conversion and desecration of the temple.

The police official said there might have been a dispute over a drain after which the issue escalated.

He added similar confrontation between them took place on December 20 that ended in stone pelting.

The police had then interfered and the matter was sorted with mutual consent, he added.

Extreme weather had serious impact on Italy’s agricultural production: Union

0

The hottest year on record in Italy has resulted in dramatically lower output for the country’s farming sector, Italy’s main agricultural union said.

Following the announcement on Tuesday by Italy’s National Research Council LaMMA meteorology consortium that 2022 was the hottest year since record-keeping began in 1800, the union Coldiretti released data on Wednesday showing that these unusual weather patterns had taken a heavy toll on the country’s agricultural sector.

Impacts include a 30-per cent reduction in extra virgin olive oil, 10 percent lower production for tomato-based products, and a five-percent decrease in the production of durum wheat, which is used to make pasta, Xinhua news agency reported.

The reduction in the production of tomato-based products- including peeled and pulped tomatoes and tomato concentrate- is especially significant, as Italy is the world’s third-largest producer of these products.

“The difficult situation created by the weather challenges risks becoming structural in Italy, where the hottest years recorded over the last two centuries are all concentrated in the last decade,” Coldiretti said.

After 2022, the other hottest years registered in Italy, in order, are 2018, 2015, 2014, 2019, and 2020.

The organization also said that the trend was likely to continue in the future.

“Climate change has been accompanied by … a higher frequency of violent weather events, seasonal lags, short and intense rainfall, and the rapid transition from sunshine to poor weather with dramatic temperature changes,” Coldiretti added.

In just 14 days, ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ crosses $1 billion in ticket sales

James Cameron’s epic movie, ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, has sailed past $1 billion in global ticket sales in just 14 days, becoming the fastest movie to cross the coveted box office milestone this year, reports Variety’.

Only three films released in 2022 managed to surpass the billion-dollar mark. Apart from ‘The Way of Water’, the other two are Tom Cruise-starrer ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ (which took 31 days to clear the benchmark) and the Chris Pratt-led ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ (which took more than four months to join the club).

By comparison, according to ‘Variety’, nine movies released in 2019 surpassed $1 billion worldwide. ‘The Way of Water’ is the fastest to hit the mark since 2021’s ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, which took 12 days. Only six movies in history have cleared $1 billion in their first two weeks of release.

James Cameron’s long-delayed sequel to the 2009 ‘Avatar’ — which remains the top grosser of all time with box office pickings totaling $2.97 billion worldwide — has so far generated $317.1 million in North America and $712.7 million overseas, bringing its global tally to $1.025 billion.

It has surpassed ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ as the second highest-grossing movie of the year, and it’s the third highest of the pandemic era, adds ‘Variety’.

‘The Way of Water’ is expected to struggle to near the heights scaled by the original ‘Avatar’ because the global box office hasn’t fully rebounded from the pandemic, according to ‘Variety’. Moreover, China, a major theatrical market, is experiencing a resurgence of the coronavirus, and Russia, another big territory, won’t have access to the film as a result of Western sanctions.

‘Murder’: Kangana Ranaut’s verdict on Tunisha Sharma’s death

Reminiscent of her campaign to prove that Sushant Singh Rajput’s death was a murder, actress Kangana Ranaut has reacted to Tunisha Sharma’s suicide and called it a murder.

She also requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make strong laws to protect women against ‘polygamy’ and ‘acid attacks’.

Commenting on the death of Tunisha, a television actress who allegedly died by suicide on the sets in Palghar on Saturday, Kangana wrote in a long post: “A woman can cope with everything, loss of love, marriage, relationship or even a loved one but she can never deal with the fact that her love story never had love, for the other person, her love and vulnerability was just an easy target for exploitation, her reality was not the same as the other person who was in it only to use and abuse her physically and emotionally.

“When it is revealed to her, her reality starts to warp and distort itself, shift shape to fit in the facts that are revealed to her in a shocking manner. Every incidence, each experience she associates with beauty and love starts to replay in her mind, slowly blending dream, reality, and imagination, all in order to fit in the brutality of a betrayal.

“She can’t trust her own perception and in such a state one feels no difference in being alive or dead, after all, life is just our perception, and if she decides to end her life… Please know she didn’t do it alone… it’s a murder.

“Indulging in polygamy with multiple women without their consent or knowledge should be a criminal offense. S*xually exploiting women without taking any responsibility for their physical, mental, and emotional well-being while breaking up with them suddenly without any valid reason should also be a criminal offense.”

In another Instagram story, she wrote: “We need to take care of our daughters. It is the responsibility of the government to protect and enrich the feminine. A land where women are not safe is destined to be doomed. I request Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji…

“Like Krishna rose for Draupadi like Rama took a stand for Sita, we expect you to make strong laws against polygamy without content, acid attacks against women, and of course chopping them into many pieces… they should amount to an immediate death sentence without trial.”

Santosh Trophy: No one expected Ladakh to score two goals, a fantastic result for us, says coach Harpreet Bedi

0

Ladakh has always been known for its surreal landscapes, unique Buddhist monasteries, high mountain passes, and vibrant culture. And now, football too.

On December 23, 2022, the Ladakh football team created history at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here, playing out a 2-2 draw against Uttarakhand in their first-ever match at the Hero Santosh Trophy.

Twenty-five-year-old Chinba Tharchin scored twice in the first nine minutes to send Ladakh into dreamland. Although their fellow mountainous visitors got back on level terms, the 22 men of Ladakh, who experienced the biggest day of their lives, made one thing clear to the rest of the nation they were not here to make up the numbers, reports the-aiff.com.

“No one expected Ladakh to score two goals. It was a fantastic result for us,” said coach Harpreet Bedi, who has spent the last two years in Ladakh working in the youth setup and as the technical director of the Ladakh Football Association (LFA).

For Tharchin, scoring the brace felt easier than finding words to describe his emotions from the big day. “Scoring Ladakh’s first goal was my dream come true,” said the man from Bodh Kharboo, a small village in the Kargil district. “Representing Ladakh was not just my dream, but also that of each and every member of our squad, and of so many youngsters back home,” Tharchin added with immense pride.

Coach Bedi opined that the match has proved to be the single biggest advertisement for football in Ladakh. “After the news of our result from the first game reached Ladakh, we received a lot of support, good wishes, and prayers from the people.

“It means a lot to us because now people don’t just think of football as a sport, but as a sport played by Ladakhis — and not only in towns like Leh and Kargil, but also in remote villages as well. They now know that there exists a Ladakh football team that is participating in the Santosh Trophy,” revealed Bedi.
Geographically, Ladakh is huge. It is the 17th-largest state/union territory by area, but the second lowest in terms of population, making it by far the least densely populated region of India. “Spreading awareness about the game to every nook and cranny of Ladakh was never going to be easy. But now, we’re seeing that not just the younger generation, but their parents are also starting to take an interest,” Bedi said.

After being granted affiliation by the AIFF in February this year, the Ladakh Football Association has already made notable progress. Within four months, the union territory participated in its first tournament at the national level, the Hero U-17 Women’s National Football Championship held in Assam, also led by coach Bedi. In September, Ladakh witnessed its first coaching course, the AIFF E Certificate, conducted by the LFA and sponsored under the FIFA LOC U-17 Women’s World Cup 2022 Coach Education Scholarship Programme.

India’s newest football association has made strides in the arena of futsal as well. Ladakh’s inaugural club championship was won by Dzawo 11 FC, who will take the honor of representing the union territory at the Hero Futsal Club Championship in New Delhi next year.

However, there is still a lot of groundwork to be done in order to put a proper structure in place. The lack of football tournaments meant that open trials were the only way to pick players for the Hero Santosh Trophy squad. “We conducted separate trials in the two districts of Ladakh  Leh and Kargil. The best players from both places were then brought together for a final trial,” explained Bedi.

The trials, assisted by former Indian women’s team coach Sajid Dar, were met with a great response, with over 200 aspirants attending. Ultimately, the field was narrowed down to the final 22, each of whom has worn the Ladakh shirt with pure passion, according to Bedi.

In their second match a couple of days later, Ladakh, reduced to 10 men for most of the contest, were handed a 0-7 drubbing by hosts Delhi at the Ambedkar Stadium. However, Bedi didn’t let that affect his team’s high spirits. “We know that results like these happen, yeah. But we were quick to move on. Our game plan was set, and we wanted to see improvements with every match.”

And they did improve in the next one. Mohmad Ilyas and Stanzin Gilik added their names to the scoresheet as Ladakh gave last season’s semi-finalists Karnataka a real run for their money in a narrow 2-3 defeat.

“We are still searching for our first win,” said an adamant Tharchin, who could only play 45 minutes since the opening match due to an injury. The forward is trying his best to return to full fitness ahead of his side’s two remaining fixtures against Gujarat and Tripura.

Indian Railways data hacked, being sold on dark web

0

Data of around three crore travelers registered with the Indian Railways has been hacked and reportedly put on sale on the Dark Web, as per reports.

It has been claimed by the hackers that the Indian Railways data is one of the biggest data ever hacked by anyone.

Earlier, a China-based hacker had hacked the technical systems of AIIMS, New Delhi. They had, in fact, taken the whole server into their control, but it was later taken back from their possession.

The data of Indian Railway put on sale on a forum being run by cyber criminals, has user data, and invoices of the latest month.

“The hacked data has usernames, emails, mobile numbers, gender, full address, and language preferences. The data is of users who book tickets from the Indian Railway portal,” a source said.

The hacker, who uses the pseudonym ‘Shadohacker’, has also claimed that he has data on government persons having government email IDs and their cell phone numbers.

As of now, the Indian Railways has not made any official comment on the matter.

This is the second time when data of Indian Railway ticket buyers have been hacked, after a similar case in 2020.

The President said that the active participation of women in all dimensions of progress is essential for the overall development of our society and country. She said that it is a matter of satisfaction that Vanvasi Kalyan Parishad is running development centers to take women forward in the direction of economic empowerment.

The Parishad is also organizing camps in tribal areas to raise awareness about rural development. She appreciated the Parishad for such welfare and developmental initiatives.

She earlier laid the foundation stone for the development of pilgrimage facilities at the Bhadrachalam Group of Temples under Pilgrimage Rejuvenational and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive (PRASHAD) scheme of the Union Ministry of Tourism

Andhra Pradesh CM urges PM to resolve post-bifurcation issues

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy on Wednesday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi and urged him to resolve several pending issues that remained unattended for the last eight years after the bifurcation of the state.

The CM apprised him that several issues remained unsolved even after eight years of the bifurcation due to which the residual state of Andhra Pradesh is hampered a lot.

According to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), Jagan Mohan Reddy said that despite the special committee headed by the Union Finance Secretary holding several meetings and discussing the unsolved bifurcation issues and related assurances given by the Centre in Parliament, no progress has been made to resolve key issues.

He told the Prime Minister that a huge amount of Rs 32,625.25 crore including resource funding of Rs 18,330.45 crore for the fiscal 2014-15 and pension arrears payable to Andhra Pradesh has been pending and appealed to expedite it immediately.

The Chief Minister said that the Finance Ministry has been imposing a plethora of restrictions on the state government on its permitted borrowings while adjusting the loans made by the previous TDP regime which had borrowed beyond the limits.

The YSRCP government has been facing several restrictions now for the wrongs of the TDP regime, he said, stressing the need for the Prime Minister to intervene and do away with the restrictions. The Chief Minister made it clear that the state would suffer a lot financially if the restrictions continue unabated, especially at a time when the country is set to fight the new variant of the Covid pandemic.

He further said that no final decision has been made by the Centre on the estimated expenditure of the Polavaram Project despite the Technical Advisory Committee finalizing the total project cost as Rs 55,548 crore. Apart from not reimbursing the Rs 2,937.92 crore spent by the state government on the project from its own revenues so far, the Centre has also wrongly chosen to treat the drinking water supply system separately from the project, he complained, saying such a decision has not been applied to any other irrigation project which has got national status.

Jagan Mohan Reddy also appealed to the Prime Minister to do away with the policy of treating the project cost component-wise as it is escalating the total project cost besides causing delay and difficulties in reimbursement of the bills.

He appealed to the PM to release Rs 10,485.38 crore immediately on ad-hoc basis to begin land acquisition and take up the works of relief and rehabilitation of families displaced in view of the efforts to increase the height of the dam to 41.15 meters.

The Chief Minister also requested the Prime Minister to take immediate steps to ensure that the Telangana government pays its dues of Rs 6,886 crore outstanding from the TS Discoms immediately to AP GENCO which is in dire straits.

Pointing out the flaws and the irrational points in the National Food Security Act, the Chief Minister said that AP is being put to huge financial losses because of the faulty Act. He said that the NITI Aayog also has agreed with this view and there is a need to correct it.

Because of the flaws in the Act, some 56 lakh eligible families in the state are foregoing the benefits under the PMGKAY, he pointed out saying the state government has spent Rs 5,527 crore so far. He sought allotment of 77,000 tonnes of ration rice to the state out of the 3 lakh tonnes of ration rice being stranded at the Centre every month.

He further asked the Prime Minister to grant 14 more medical colleges to the state as there are only 12 medical colleges now to cater to the medical needs of the people as there are now 26 districts after reorganization with each district having a population of 18 lacks.

He also appealed to the Prime Minister to allot mines to meet the iron ore requirement of the steel plant being built at Kadapa and extend all cooperation to the proposed 76.9 km long Metro Rail Project in Visakhapatnam for which DPR has been already submitted, besides fulfilling the promise of granting special status to the state as per the assurances given in the Parliament.

The Chief Minister assured the Prime Minister that the AP government is ready to face the emerging BF-7 Covid threat.

Sam Asghari has posted the picture with his wife Britney Spears in a rare picture posted in his Instagram. This picture has led to conspiracy theories by the fans of his pop icon wife, reports Mirror.co.uk’.

Fans are speculating that it’s not them in the picture. Chart-topping songstress Britney, 41, is known for her questionable social media activity, but model husband Sam, 28, maintains a lower profile.

As per Mirror.co.uk, despite boasting of more than 3 million followers, Sam rarely shares updates with his followers – but seemingly made an exception for the Christmas holidays.

“Merry Britmas to you all from Samta & Britney,” he posted yesterday, alongside a sweet snap of the pair on top of a hill with a scenic view.

His update began: “A little hike and a little meditation on Christmas Day goes a long way my wife is really becoming a meditation guru and I love it.”

Fans had only recently claimed that Britney was no longer in control of her Instagram page after she switched off the facility to comment on her posts.

Mirror.co.uk further states that in a new conspiracy theory, fans claim that it’s not actually Sam or Britney in his latest picture, saying they look “nothing alike”.

Most were quick to snap back at the conspiracy theories, as fans urged others not to criticize the couple.
