India vice-captain Smriti Mandhana earns nomination for ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year 2022 award

0

India vice-captain Smriti Mandhana on Friday earned a nomination for the ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year award for 2022. Smriti had been honored with the Rachael Heyhoe-Flint Trophy for winning the women’s cricketer of the year award in 2018 and 2021.

Apart from her, England’s fast-bowling all-rounder Nat Sciver, New Zealand’s leg-spin all-rounder Amelia Kerr, and Australia opener Beth Mooney have been nominated for the honor this year.

Smriti continued her rich vein of form in international cricket for the second year running, finishing as India’s highest run-scorer across formats. The left-handed opener showed her incredible prowess in the white-ball formats and was the highest run-getter in T20Is (594 runs) and the second-highest in ODIs (696 runs) for India in 2022.

Smriti made her presence felt at both the major tournaments this year — the Women’s ODI World Cup and the Commonwealth Games. In the latter, she was one of the driving forces in India going through to the final and bagging the silver medal in the first-ever Women’s cricket event at the Commonwealth Games.

Her most exciting innings of 2022 came in the second T20I of the bilateral series against Australia in December. In front of over 47,000 spectators – the highest turnout for a women’s cricket match in India – at the DY Patil stadium in Mumbai, Smriti smacked a 49-ball 79 while chasing Australia’s 187/1.

She was India’s top-scorer in the match, taking the match to the very end as India set up a Super Over clash after leveling the scores at 187/5. In the Super Over, India made a competitive total of 20/1, out of which Smriti scored 13 off the last three balls. India then restricted Australia to 16/1, sealing a memorable win in front of a roaring home crowd.

Nat was at her dominant best across formats for England in 2022, finishing the year as the top-scorer in Test and second highest in ODIs. She did the bulk of her scoring in ODI cricket, scoring 833 runs at an average of 59.50 and a strike rate of 91.43, and played a pivotal role in England’s journey to the final of the ODI World Cup 2022, becoming the third-highest run-getter in the tournament with 436 runs in eight matches.

Nat also showed what she is capable of in the longer format, scoring 242 runs in two matches. She scored her maiden Test century with a superb 169 not out against South Africa in June. She made handy contributions with the ball as well, bagging 22 wickets across all formats in 2022. In the first ODI of the bilateral series against South Africa, she registered career-best figures of 4-59, showing her ability to change the game with the ball.

2022 will be remembered as the year Amelia came into her own as an all-rounder, with the 22-year-old contributing consistently with the bat and the ball across formats. She couldn’t have asked for a better start to the year – the right-hander registered four scores of 50-plus in the five-match ODI series against India, including a sublime century in the second match.

Amelia carried her form over to the World Cup as well, where she was the third-highest run-getter for New Zealand with 201 runs. In the shorter format, she showed a marked improvement in her batting, accumulating 327 runs at an average of 32.70, compared to her career average of 22.66. With the ball in hand, the leg-spinner was more than a handful for the opponents and bagged 30 wickets across formats.

Despite not managing to score a century over the last 12 months, 2022 may have been Beth’s best year of her career yet as she elevated her game to an even higher level on the back of some added consistency and new-found maturity.

She did manage eight scores in excess of 50 in 2022 (four in T20Is, three in ODIs, and one at Test level) and six not-outs in 50-over cricket during the year helped the Australia star finish with an ODI average of more than 100 over the last 12 months.

It was against old foe England in the Ashes series on home soil that her year commenced and it was during the Women’s ODI World Cup in New Zealand that the opener really shone. Dismissed just three times during the showcase event, her haul of 330 runs was bettered by only five other players and her average of 110 was the best of any batter at the tournament.

Unsurprisingly Beth did not slow down, with more dominant performances coming during Australia’s successful Commonwealth Games campaign and another two unbeaten half-centuries during the away series in India at the end of the year.

Google’s Waze app adds new feature that warns about dangerous roads

0

Google-owned Waze app has added a new feature that notifies users of dangerous nearby roads based on traffic data while trying not to overwhelm them with alerts.

When using this new beta version of Waze, nearby high-risk roads are colored red on the map, however, this may not be the case for roads that the user frequently travels on, reports The Verge, citing sources.

The feature also only displays one pop-up notification about the dangerous roads around the driver, possibly to keep caution from becoming anxious.

Countries that have access to the beta release of the app, will get a pop-up that states — “using reports from drivers and your route, you may see alerts for ‘History of crashes’ on some roads,” said the report.

While the feature is still in beta, it is expected to be made available to the general public soon, the report added.

In June, the tech giant rolled out a new feature for Google Maps that will now show the air quality layer in the US on both Android and iOS users.

According to 9To5Google, this will show users what to expect, air-wise: whether it’s smoggy, smoky, otherwise bad, or simply wonderful.

Google working on option to block insecure HTTP downloads in Chrome

0

Tech giant Google is reportedly working on a new security option to block insecure hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) downloads in Chrome.

Hypertext transfer protocol secure (HTTPS), an extension of HTTP, has become very common across the web, reports 9To5Google.

Earlier, it was only used with privacy-sensitive websites like banks that needed to be secured with HTTPS encryption, however, now it has effectively become the default.

Moreover, the browser now marks any older HTTP website as ‘Not Secure’ in the address bar.

Chrome also blocks secure websites from using insecure web forms or offering insecure downloads. This combination of secure and insecure elements is known as ‘mixed content’.

In the beginning, the new option to block insecure HTTP downloads will be locked behind a Chrome flag.

Later on, it is expected to be available as part of the “Always use secure connections” toggle, which was introduced in June, the report said.

Earlier this month, the tech giant rolled out the passkey support in Chrome with the Stable M108 version, for better safety.

Passkeys are a safer replacement for passwords and other perishable authentication factors.

Bella Thorne says Disney channel almost fired her for wearing a bikini at age 14

Actress Bella Thorne was a staple on the Disney Channel for many years, but she apparently almost lost her job when she was 14.

During Tuesday’s episode of Emily Ratajkowski’s ‘High Low With EmRata’ podcast, Thorne opened up about many instances where she felt she was sexualized as a young girl, reports Variety’.

“One time I almost got fired off the Disney Channel because I was 14, and I wore a two-piece on the beach,” Thorne said.

“This stylist that I was hanging out with put this chain on me that’s, like, a body chain. I don’t know. I don’t care. There was a fan, they got a photo of me on the beach. I almost got fired. It was all over the media, it was literally viral at that time. It was, ‘How dare this little girl do this? This is so disgusting.”

Thorne, who starred opposite Zendaya on ‘Shake It Up’ from 2010 to 2013, explained that people were “putting Disney under pressure” to fire her, but ultimately they didn’t.

“They were like, ‘Hey, we’re getting a lot of heat for this. Everyone’s getting heat for this because you’re in a bikini on a beach, so she needs to make sure she goes out in boy shorts and a loose t-shirt next time she’s at the beach.”

During the episode, the actor, 25, also recounted a disturbing situation that happened four years before that.

“I had a director give me feedback once and I was 10. The casting director calls my agent and the agent calls my mom, and they’re like, ‘So she’s not moving forward because the director felt like she was flirting with him, and it made him really uncomfortable’,” Thorne said.

“What the f**k are you talking about, man?! I don’t give a f**k what the f**k I said! I don’t care if I said, ‘Eat my p***y right now!’ She is 10 years old. Why ever would you think that?”

Police in Andhra Pradesh’s Kundukur town registered a case in connection with the death of eight persons in a stampede during Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president N. Chandrababu Naidu’s roadshow on Wednesday night.

Eight persons, including two women, died and five others were injured when they fell into a drain due to a stampede during the former chief minister’s roadshow in the town of Nellore district.

The TDP has blamed inadequate security by police for the incident. Local TDP leaders said they had informed police that a large number of people were expected for the roadshow but they failed to make proper arrangements.

One of the leaders said unauthorized construction over the drain also caused the mishap. With no parking place, some people had parked their two-wheelers near the drain. When the TDP leader arrived, people surged forward to catch his glimpse and fell on each other and some people fell into the drain.

The deceased were identified as E. Rajeswari (48), Chinna Kondaia (55), Kakumani Raja (50), K. Yanadi (55), Devineni Ravindra (73), G. Madhubabu (44), Y. Vijay (45) and Purshottam (70).

Chandrababu Naidu, on Wednesday, announced Rs 10 lakh each as ex gratia to the kin of those who died in the stampede.

Expressing deep regret at the loss of lives, Chandrababu Naidu said that those who died are the family members of the TDP and it is a great loss to the party. “It is really a great agony that the family members of the TDP who fought for the interest of the state, who attended the party public meeting here have lost their valuable lives,” Naidu said.

Promising that he will stand by the family members of those who died in the incident, Chandrababu said that he will not only pay the ex gratia to the family members but also will help with the education of their children. He also ordered the party activists to stay back in Kandukur till the last rites of the dead are complete.

The president of the state unit of the TDP, Atchen Naidu, also said that the death of seven persons at the public meeting of Chandrababu is a great tragedy and the party will stand by the family members of the deceased.

PM announces relief for victims of Andhra stampede

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the PM Relief Fund (PMNRF) to the kin of the seven people who died after falling in a drainage canal in Andhra Pradesh’s Nellore district during former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s roadshow.

“Pained by the mishap at a public meeting in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon. An ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased and the injured would be given Rs 50,000,” Modi tweeted on Thursday.

During the incident on Wednesday in Kandukur town which took place soon after the TDP chief arrived to address the roadshow, eight people were also injured.

After the tragedy, Naidu immediately canceled the meeting and announced Rs 10 lakh to the kin of the deceased.
