NASA finally bids goodbye to InSight Mars lander

0

The US space agency has finally retired the InSight Mars lander after more than four years of collecting unique science on the Red Planet.

Mission controllers at the agency’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Southern California were unable to contact the lander after two consecutive attempts, leading them to conclude the spacecraft’s solar-powered batteries have run out of energy referred to as “dead bus”.

The agency said in a statement that it will continue to listen for a signal from the lander, just in case, but hearing from it at this point is considered unlikely.

The last time InSight communicated with Earth was on December 15.

“I watched the launch and landing of this mission, and while saying goodbye to a spacecraft is always sad, the fascinating science InSight conducted is cause for celebration,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington, D.C.

“The seismic data alone from this Discovery Program mission offers tremendous insights not just into Mars but other rocky bodies, including Earth,” he added

InSight data has yielded details about Mars’ interior layers, the surprisingly strong remnants beneath the surface of its extinct magnetic dynamo, weather on this part of Mars, and lots of quake activity.

Its highly sensitive seismometer, along with daily monitoring performed by the French space agency Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (CNES) and the Marsquake Service managed by ETH Zurich, detected 1,319 “marsquakes”, including quakes caused by meteoroid impacts, the largest of which unearthed boulder-size chunks of ice late last year.

Such impacts help scientists determine the age of the planet’s surface, and data from the seismometer provides scientists with a way to study the planet’s crust, mantle, and core.

“With InSight, seismology was the focus of a mission beyond Earth for the first time since the Apollo missions, when astronauts brought seismometers to the Moon,” said Philippe Lognonne of Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris, principal investigator of InSight’s seismometer.

The seismometer was the last science instrument that remained powered on as dust accumulating on the lander’s solar panels gradually reduced its energy, a process that began before NASA extended the mission earlier this year.

“As a scientist who’s spent a career studying Mars, it’s been a thrill to see what the lander has achieved, thanks to an entire team of people across the globe who helped make this mission a success,” said Laurie Leshin, director of JPL, which manages the mission.

Mars InSight lander on Tuesday posted its last image on Twitter.

“My power’s really low, so this may be the last image I can send. Don’t worry about me though: my time here has been both productive and serene. If I can keep talking to my mission team, I will – but I’ll be signing off here soon. Thanks for staying with me,” posted the InSight lander team.

Popular social media platform Snapchat is adding three new features to its paid subscription service ‘Snapchat+’, including new customization options.

Snapchat+ subscribers can now make the look and feel of the application more personalised by customizing the camera capture button, application icons, and more reports TechCrunch.

Users can change the camera capture button to a particular color or shape, like a heart or a soccer ball.

Additionally, subscribers can now add a custom background to their chats with the new ‘Chat Wallpapers’ feature.

Subscribers can also send a Snapchat+ subscription to a friend with a new ‘Gifting’ feature.

The platform announced back in October that this feature would be rolling out this month.

With the Gifting feature, users can send a 12-month Snapchat+ subscription to a friend for $39.99, the report said.

Meanwhile, in August, Snap announced that its premium service Snapchat+ had reached 1 million subscribers and the platform had begun rolling out new features to allow users to customize their experience.

Andre Coley appointed West Indies’ interim head coach for tours to Zimbabwe, South Africa

0

Cricket West Indies (CWI) on Thursday announced the appointment of Andre Coley as the interim head coach of the West Indies men’s team for their upcoming tours of Zimbabwe and South Africa. He will take over from Phil Simmons, who stepped down after the side’s first-round exit from the Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia.

Following a meeting of the CWI Board of Directors on Monday, CWI announced that Coley will oversee West Indies’ two-Test tour of Zimbabwe from January 28 to February 16, as well as the multi-format tour of South Africa, comprising two Tests, three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and three T20 Internationals (T20Is) from February 21 to March 28.

Coley, a former Jamaica wicketkeeper/batter, is currently the head coach of the CWI Academy programme. He previously served as the assistant Academy head coach and interim Academy head coach when the Sagicor Academy was launched in 2010.

He was also head coach of the West Indies U19 team; assistant coach of the West Indies men’s and women’s teams, as well as Head Coach of Jamaica Scorpions and Windward Islands Volcanoes, who were the 2018 Super50 Cup Champions.

In 2016 he was assistant coach of the West Indies men’s Team which won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India. Earlier this year he was assistant coach of Jamaica Tallawahs when they captured the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) title. CWI also confirmed that the contracts of assistant coaches Roddy Estwick and Monty Desai had ended.

“To be asked to oversee the West Indies team on the upcoming tours of Zimbabwe and South Africa is a special honour. West Indies cricket holds a special place in my heart. The upcoming assignment will be challenging as we will come up against two teams in their home conditions.”

“We will need to ensure that our planning and preparation are appropriate, and demonstrate consistency in the execution of these plans, to give ourselves the best opportunity to achieve positive results.”

“The players, I’m sure, are enthusiastic about the opportunities that both series should offer and are eager to contribute to our team’s success. I look forward to the tours ahead and the opportunity to make a tangible and meaningful contribution to the growth of West Indies cricket,” said Coley in an official statement on his interim head coach role.

While Coley fulfils the interim role, CWI’s High-Performance Manager Graeme West will oversee the West Indies Academy programme, supported by the Director of Cricket, Jimmy Adams to ensure there are no disruptions to the Academy programme during the period.

“We welcome Andre back to the West Indies dressing room and with his wealth of knowledge of the game, player-management skills, dedication and hard work, as well as attention to detail, we know he is well equipped.”

“He is a highly experienced coach who has functioned at every level within the CWI High-Performance Pathway. This has prepared him for the job at hand and we expect he will again approach this new role with the same vigor and zeal which have characterized his time in the CWI coaching system and has earned the respect of players and everyone who he has interacted with.”

“I’d like to thank Roddy and Monty for their hard work and dedication in supporting the team over the last few years and wish them the very best in the future,” elaborated Adams.

Meta making Quest 2’s GPU more powerful

0

Meta announced that it is giving developers 7 percent more graphics processing unit (GPU) compute power to work with on Meta Quest 2 devices, for better application performance on the virtual reality (VR) headsets.

The company is working on ways to improve developer tools and experiences to help them enhance pixel quality and application performance, Meta said in a Quest blog post on Wednesday.

The increased GPU power will improve the developer’s ability to “leverage higher pixel density without substantially reducing the resolution in order to hit the target frame rate”.

All developers can now take advantage of the new 525 MHz GPU frequency.

The dynamic clocking system will automatically increase the frequency as it detects that the application would benefit from it.

Instead of increasing foveation, the GPU will increase from 490 MHz to 525 MHz first in order to maintain higher visual quality for as long as possible.

“We’re excited about the impact this improvement will bring across our app ecosystem, and early experiments strongly suggest that a 7 percent increase in GPU clocks will provide a better experience for both you and your app’s community,” Meta said.

‘RRR’ heroes to return for another epic battle with the British Raj

‘RRR’ director S.S. Rajamouli says the sequel to his blockbuster action hit is well underway, reports Variety’.

The filmmaker, who’s at this moment in the throes of his campaign for an Oscar, informed ‘Variety’ that his father and screenwriter Vijayendra Prasad is “seriously working on the story”, with his revolutionary heroes set to return for another epic battle with the colonizing Brits.

The three-hour action-musical epic has been in the news for earning two Golden Globe nominations last week, for the original song for the track ‘Naatu Naatu’ as well as the best non-English language film. Rajamouli was also awarded best director by the New York Film Critics Circle.

The ‘RRR’ helmer informed ‘Variety’ that a sequel wasn’t initially on the cards, but has become more of a prospect as the film has found international success.

“When we were making it, we didn’t have an idea about [a sequel],” he said. “With the initial success of it, we discussed a little bit and threw out some good ideas, but we didn’t feel there was a great idea that was worth pursuing, so we left it at that.”

Rajamouli continued: “Then, after the international success, when the topic came up again, my cousin [Golden Globe-nominated music composer M. M. Keeravani] — who is also a part of my core team — gave an idea which we felt like, ‘Oh my God, this is a great idea. This is the idea that is worth pursuing.”

The director, reports Variety’, said he asked his father — who narrates the story to Rajamouli and others, who then write up the first draft — to “immediately sit on it and expand the idea”.

“At present, he’s seriously working on the story; he’s getting it done,” Rajamouli said, according to ‘Variety’. “But once this script is done is when we will really look into how to make it, when to make it, and how to bring it onto the screen.”

I-League: Luka Majcen’s strike ensure RoundGlass Punjab beat Gokulam Kerala

0

Luka Majcen’s strike ensured that RoundGlass Punjab (RGPFC) overcome defending champions Gokulam Kerala (GKFC) FC, 1-0 in a Round 9 fixture of the Hero I-League 2022-23 played here at the Tau Devi Lal Stadium to remain unbeaten at home this season.

With this win, RGPFC has climbed up to second in the table below Sreenidi Deccan FC who have played a match more than them.

RGPFC coach Staikos Vergetis made two changes to the starting lineup with the injured Deepak Devrani and top scorer Luka Majcen returning. Gokulam Kerala also fielded their strongest side for the important game between the third and fourth-placed teams in the table. The first half saw RGPFC having the most possession but both teams could not settle down in the middle. As a result both teams looked out of color while going forward.

RGPFC had their best chance in the 30th minute when Freddy Lallawmawma shot wide of a setup by Luka Majcen from a cross of Pranjal Bhumij from the right wing. Gokulam Kerala had their best chance of the half through a one-two move between Sreekuttan VS and Shijin. Shijin turned well inside the box and set up midfielder Farshad Noor who unfortunately scuffed his shot and the follow-up was hit wide by Sreekuttan.

The second half saw both teams looking settled and playing some attacking football. GKFC was the more active in the attacking end and created chances but the defense stood strong denying any clear-cut chances. Goalkeeper Kiran Kumar Limbu also made some stops keeping RGPFC in the game. RGPFC took the lead in the 75th minute through Luka Majcen. Ajay Chettri’s freekick was met by Luka who jumped above his marker to beat GKFC keeper Bilal Khan and it proved to be the winner of the match. KFC shored up their attack to find the equalizer but RGPFC held their nerves. Luka Majcen was adjudged as the Hero of the Match.

RGPFC has 17 points from eight matches while Gokulam Kerala FC has 15 points from nine matches. The I – League will be on winter break after the completion of Round 9 matches. RGPFC will face NEROCA on January 8 at Tau Devi Lal Stadium, Panchkula in their next match.

Third song from NBK-starrer ‘Veera Simha Reddy’ out on Dec 24

The third single, ‘Maa Bava Manobhavalu’, from Nandamuri Balakrishna’s upcoming movie ‘Veera Simha Reddy’ is set to be released on December 24.

The makers expect that this will be the sensational special song of the year. The movie, which also stars Shruti Haasan as the female lead, is being produced by Mythri Movie Makers and is scheduled for release on Sankranthi 2023 (January 12).

The makers say Balakrishna is all set to appear in a mass and action-packed avatar he has never been seen in before. ‘Veera Simha Reddy’ is being helmed by Gopichand Malineni.

S. Thaman, who is in top form. has scored the music and the two singles released thus far — ‘Jai Balayya’ and ‘Suguna Sundari’ — have turned out to be runaway hits.

‘Suguna Sundari’, in particular, has taken audience expectations to the next level with Balakrishna’s exceptional dance moves.

Now, it’s time for what the makers describe as the “sensational special song of the year”.

Balakrishna, who plays Balayya Bava, looks uber cool in a black blazer and shades. Just with the poster, expectations will be soaring northwards, say the makers.

Duniya Vijay and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar form the rest of the main ensemble cast. Rishi Punjabi is helming with cinematography and the National Award-winning Navin Nooli is at the editing table.

The film’s shoot will be wrapped up soon with the team canning the last song. The post-production work is already underway.

All about BF.7 Omicron sub-variant that has triggered fresh Covid fears

0

As India gears up to fight a potential resurgence of the Covid virus in the country, the BF.7 Omicron sub-variant once again hogged the headlines as it is currently on the move in countries like China.

Also called the Omicron Spawn, the BF.7 sub-variant, first detected in India in October, is the newest form that has high transmissibility.

According to health experts, this is because the new variant quickly bypasses the immunity that a person has developed through a natural infection with an earlier variant or even if the complete course of the vaccines is taken.

Due to this, there is an expectation that the world might see a fourth wave of the pandemic. This new Omicron variant was first detected in China and India has seen its first case of this variant in Gujarat.

Initially in the pandemic, the virus mutated several times, and the WHO declared the Delta variant as the most severe one.

The symptoms of the new BF.7 sub-variant are similar to the common flu and include cold, cough, fever, body pain, etc. As it is highly transmittable, it spreads to a larger group of people within a short duration.

It is important to be careful in public places since we do see that people have become a little careless as many of the norms and the rules that are put forth during Covid-19 have been lifted, say, experts. So, it is now important that we at least follow the basic measures, they add.

Big B remembers ‘the most beautiful mother’ on her death anniversary

Cine icon Amitabh Bachchan has remembered his mother Teji Bachchan on her 15th death anniversary.

Amitabh took to his blog and recalled her last day, saying that she passed away “elegantly and quietly” at the age of 93 on December 21, 2007, following a prolonged illness.

“She slipped away as elegantly and quietly as was her temperament this morning as I watched the doctors struggle to revive her delicate heart, time and again .. pumping her delicate frame in vigorous pushes to get her to live again .. and again .. and again ..”

“We stood .. holding hands all of us near and dear .. the nieces and the children in tears .. until.”

He added: “I spoke up ..leave it doc .. leave her .. she wishes to go .. stop .. do not make any more efforts .. each effort was painful for her system and painful for us to stand there and witness .. each time that ‘straight line’ would appear .. and then shift to the graphic responses of the physical pumping .. stop it I said ..”

“And they did .. the singular tone of the straight line on the monitor .. indicating to us all and the World, that she had left .. slipped out .. as someone recently mentioned about the passing of a near one .. and gone to a ‘better place’ – words that we often hear being used in the consolation of the departure.'”

“A gentle hand on her forehead .. a million memories flashing by in the silence of the room in the hospital .. and then leaving to bring her home .. the hall in Prateeksha was cleaned and washed .. her portrait, her beautiful face, by the side of a few white flowers .. a silence about .. and she lay there for the last time ..”

He recalled that her nieces came and brought in the Granth Saheb Shabd in recitation, sitting by her side all night.

“I lay on the floor .. it was traditional .. to spend the night with her, till the cremation the next day .. and then her body to the flames .. the collection of her ashes .. and taken to the sacred places which she believed in and prayed at .. the prayer meet .. with recitations of the Granth Saheb by the recognized Granthis .. and her portrait .. by the side of Babuji, in his room .. adorning.

“The sound of shlokas and prayers each day and the flowers keep them company .. her and his books of prayer alongside.. in reverence .. the room remains so .. permanently .. and she remains permanently with us .. Amma ji .. the most beautiful Mother in the entire Universe.

Google adds option to buy or deny kids’ purchases

Google has added the new ‘Purchase Requests’ feature that will provide family managers the option to approve or deny children’s purchases.

Purchase Requests will make it easier for families to safely purchase both paid apps and in-app purchases, the tech giant said in a blog post on Tuesday.

If users do not have a family payment method set up, children under 13 will be able to send a purchase request directly to the family manager.

Users can then evaluate the request and important information about the application or in-app purchase on their own device, and decide if the purchase should be completed or not.

If they decide to complete the purchase, they can use their own stored payment methods including Google Play gift cards.

Family managers will receive notifications for these purchase requests in real-time, but they can also view it in an approval request queue to decide later.

And just like with the family payment method, transactions completed through Purchase Requests will all be available in the Order History.
