What a terrific game! writes Gavaskar after watching World Cup final in Qatar

0

What a terrific game! Yes, indeed it was, it was none other than India’s former-cricket-captain-turned-commentator Sunil Gavaskar, who wrote on his Instagram page after witnessing the FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Qatar in Doha on Sunday.

The former Indian captain knows a thing or two about a terrific win, as he was part of the history-making Indian team which won the Cricket World Cup at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in 1983 under the leadership of Kapil Dev, a win that would change the face of cricket in the country.

It was a final which was an absolute thriller, with six goals scored in 120 minutes, a late fightback from France, not once but twice, and then the penalty shoot-out which decided the title winner.

Nearly four decades back Gavaskar and his teammates were rank outsiders against the then high and mighty West Indies, but they pulled off one of the sensational wins in the low-scoring final over the Caribbean cricketers.

The win on Sunday was a thriller albeit on a football field.

The Mumbai-born ‘Little Master’ took sheer delight in the matches of the football showpiece event and watched two semifinals and the final.

He took time to post a picture with former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who was part of the FIFA Technical Study Group of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022

Gavaskar was not the only Indian cricketer in Qatar for the World Cup, two other former India captains, Ravi Shastri and Saurav Ganguly were also there for the final.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), General Secretary Jay Shah also witnessed the final.

The 29-day football fiesta brought the Jogo bonito into the spotlight but cricket continues to be the most followed game in Qatar, thanks to the large Asian communities who are based in Qatar.

The Sri Lankan community rolled out the red carpet to former World Cup winner Sanath Jayasuriya, and also to another former international Farveez Maharoof, both of who watched some group matches before heading back to the island country.

Bangladesh, which has several people working in the cricket game in Qatar, saw the former captain of the national team Habibul Bashar, Akram Khan, who is the chief selector of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, Mohammad Sanwar Hossain, and Tamim Iqbal witnessing the high-intensity matches in Qatar.

Among the current players, Pakistan’s Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf were the two who were in the spotlight obliged by posing for selfies and pictures with the Asian community in Qatar.

Former England batsman Kevin Pietersen was also in town and followed most of the matches of the Three Lions. He is not new to Qatar having been to the country a decade back at the invitation of a businessman, who wanted to promote cricket in Qatar, but those plans did not materialize.

Those failed plans, there are many in the pipeline that the current office-bearers of Qatar Cricket Association headed by Sheikh Abdulaziz Bin Saoud Al Thani want to take forward,

The Qatar national cricket team, both men’s and women’s, consists of players who were born in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and occasionally someone from Nepal and Afghanistan, A few younger players are those born in Qatar but to parents who were born in Asia.

The game is not of much interest to the Qatari youths although the President of the Qatar Cricket Association is a Qatari and has some long-term plans to promote the game among the Asian communities especially with Qatar hosting the Asian Games in 2030.

The QCA officials who are working under Sheikh Abdulaziz, hailing from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are trying to use the star appeal of some of the former cricketers from India and getting feedback to improve the game.

The QCA which earlier rolled the red carpet for Virat Kholi, ahead of the Asia Cup in Dubai, did this time around for Ganguly and Shastri, what transcribed between the QCA officials and the Indian cricketers remains confined to the four walls as like all things the QCA officials rarely communicate with the media and the lower rung personnel are not authorized to give information to the press.

But one thing is certain none of the Qatari youngsters are interested in the game and no plans are made to get them into the gentleman’s game in Qatar by QCA.

All the efforts to promote the game are by private clubs owing allegiance to some private companies, some who are employed with the companies, and some working elsewhere and playing the game on the weekends as a hobby.

Syed Rafi, hailing from the Indian state of Hyderabad a cricket and music promoter who also dabbles as a content creator says most of the players play the game as a hobby.

“On Fridays, which is a holiday in Qatar, they start matches at 5.00 am, when the sun comes out. They do not play with the hard ball but with the hard tennis ball and there are some 60 to 70 clubs in Qatar,” said Rafi.

“We have three to four grounds in different parts of Qatar where you can play leather ball cricket and a number of grounds at Losail, where the QCA holds the league,” he added.

“I have never come across any Qatari playing cricket in my 16 years in Qatar,” added Rafi, who witnessed a few football matches in Qatar during the World Cup and is waiting for the top cricket action.

With most of the Qatari players being amateur, they are eagerly awaiting contracts from QCA, which they are hopeful of getting in the months ahead with Kuwait, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia handing short and long-term contracts to their players, who incidentally trace their roots to Asia with an occasional native player thrown in.

Ram-Salisbury will be the favorites for the title in South Asia’s only ATP 250 event that will take place at the Balewadi Stadium in Pune from December 31 to January 7.

The pair of World No. 3 Ram and Salisbury, the World No. 4, has entered Tata Open Maharashtra with a combined team ranking of seven. The three-time Grand Slam champion American-British duo enjoyed an incredibly successful 2022 season, winning the U.S. Open title for the second time in a row and also won two ATP Masters 1000 titles before capping off the year by clinching the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin, the organizers informed in a release on Tuesday.

“We look forward to welcoming the reigning U.S. Open champions Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury to Tata Open Maharashtra. It’s a strong field that also has four Indians including Rohan Bopanna and Ramkumar Ramanathan, who won the title together last year. It’s always great to watch our players dominating at the tournament in front of home fans and we expect similar gameplay in the upcoming edition as well,” said Prashant Sutar, Tournament Director of Tata Open Maharashtra.

“I’m delighted to see four Indians in the main draw along with top stars from the tennis world, including champion duo, Ram and Salisbury. It’s going to be exciting. We have seen what the Indians are capable of last year and I hope the upcoming edition will also give our players an edge, playing in front of home fans. Indians doing well at the big events like this has always been pleasing for us,” Iyer was quoted as saying in a release on Tuesday.

The other foreign pairs to receive direct entries are American duo Nathaniel Lammons and Jackson Withrow, who won their first ATP Tour doubles title together at the 2022 Southern California Open in San Diego, and the French pair of Sadio Doumbia and Fabien Reboul. The former World No. 24 Sander Gille and former World No. 28 Joran Vliegen also made the cut with a combined ranking of 121.

Bopanna and Ramkumar, who clinched the title last year, will play along with different partners this time. The two-time champion Bopanna, who is also the top-ranked Indian doubles player in the world at 19, will team up with Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp. The former U..S Open champion Marin Cilic and the last edition’s runner-up Emil Ruusuvuori will lead a strong field in the singles main draw, which also includes 17 Top-100 players.

The qualifying event will begin on December 31 while the main draw will be played from January 2-7.

Indian consumers seek high-speed, advanced computational capabilities in 5G devices

Indian consumers are seeking high speed and advanced computational capabilities in 5 G-powered smart devices, but concerns around limited coverage, replacement of existing devices, and privacy of data are bothering them, a report showed on Tuesday.

According to market research firm Techarc, limited coverage of 5G, obsolescence of existing devices, and data security and privacy emerge as the top three concerns for 5G powered Connected Consumers.

“Connected Consumers are expecting advanced computational capabilities in these devices leveraging artificial intelligence, machine learning, and others, increasing the role and significance of a processor (chipset) in the smart devices,” Faisal Kawoosa, Founder and Chief Analyst Techarc said in a statement.

The report mentioned that smart comfort and convenience, smart home appliances, and smart security devices are expected to be among the priority categories for connected consumers in 2023 where they will purchase devices like smart lights, smart air purifiers, smart ACs, and more.

“The smart devices ecosystem shall have to power their devices with processors that can help OEMs to design such devices meeting consumer expectations,” Kawoosa added.

Moreover, the report also assessed that affordability will remain the theme driving adoption with 32 percent of the connected consumers willing to spend a cumulative budget of Rs 20,000 to Rs 50,000 on smart devices in 2023.

Brand experience and awareness will remain a key concern for users who are still on the edge by not making an opinion about buying smart devices, said the report.

Pakistan: Militants holed up in Bannu counter terror compound killed

0

Security forces have gunned down the terrorists holding hostages inside the Counter-Terrorism Department’s (CTD) compound in Bannu in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Forces are however further combing the area to search for and neutralize any terror threats still hiding out there, security sources told Geo News on Tuesday.

The fierce exchange of fire left several security men injured, according to sources, Geo News reported.

The forces had launched an operation to free the hostages taken by militants in the compound earlier today. Officials, privy to the development, shared that a clearance operation is underway.

Geo News had reported that columns of smoke could be seen rising from the compound, while a gunbattle raged on inside.

Schools have already been shut down in Bannu on the orders of the deputy commissioner. The hospitals have been put on high alert and mobile services have also been blocked in the area.

The operation was launched after Taliban terrorists stormed the CTD compound in Bannu and held hostages on Sunday.

To end the standoff, the Pakistani government started talks with the leadership of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in Afghanistan. It was confirmed by Mohammad Ali Saif, spokesperson of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, Geo News reported.

The sources had claimed that the terrorists are demanding a safe air route to Afghanistan.

The law and order situation in KP has gone south over the last few weeks as an increase has been noticed in threats and attacks on security forces as well as high-profile political personalities.

According to a The News report, the police are on high alert across the province after the recent spike in attacks in areas including Peshawar, southern districts, and the Mardan region.

The publication, citing a source, said: “Apart from the police, senior politicians have complained of receiving threats. The houses of some of them have also come under grenade attack.”

Provincial spokesperson of the Awami National Party (ANP) Samar Bilour has also shared that their provincial president Aimal Wali Khan had received a call about a plan of attack on his life.

Coalition government to be formed in Fiji

0

Fiji will have a new government as the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA), one of the opposition parties, decided on Tuesday to work with the People’s Alliance (PA) and its partner, the National Federation Party (NFP), to form a coalition government for the next four years.

According to the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC), the SODELPA met separately with the PA and the NFP Tuesday afternoon for possible cooperation to form a coalition government, reports Xinhua news agency.

In a secret ballot during a SODELPA management board meeting held on Tuesday, 16 SODELPA management board members voted for a coalition with the PA and its partner NFP while 14 board members voted for the FijiFirst Party (FFP), led by Vereqe Bainimarama.

In this year’s general elections, which were held on December 14, the FFP gained 26 seats, PA 21 seats, its partner NFP secured five seats and the SODELPA had three seats.

Under Fiji’s electoral system, a party can form a government if they win 28 seats or more in the 55-member Parliament.

The FFP had been in power since 2014, but this time the party has failed to secure the majority of seats.

The PA and the NFP have already formed a pre-election coalition. The new coalition government will thus have 29 seats in Parliament.

Meta Reality Labs puts ‘about half’ of operating expenses into AR

0

Meta is directing “about half” of its Reality Labs’ operating expenses toward augmented reality (AR) and is committed to its vision for the future.

As shown in the company’s quarter 3 (Q3) results, about 80 percent of Meta’s total investments support the core business and the remaining 20 percent goes to Reality Labs, Andrew Bosworth, Meta’s chief technology officer and head of Reality Labs, said in a blog post on Monday.

“It’s a level of investment we believe makes sense for a company committed to staying at the leading edge of one of the most competitive and innovative industries on earth,” Bosworth said.

“Mixed reality (MR) is a key part of the journey toward full AR devices, and eye and face tracking is an essential piece of the technology stack needed for AR and virtual reality (VR) devices to reach their full potential.”

The immediate aim of MR is to blend the physical environment with digital objects.

“MR is about much more than just displaying a live video feed of your surroundings inside the headset,” Bosworth explained.

For it to work properly, the headset needs to understand users’ rooms as a 3D space by recognizing the surfaces and objects around them and how they can interact with digital objects.

It requires technologies like Spatial Anchors, which let virtual objects occupy fixed spaces in the real world.

Scene Understanding, which can virtually reconstruct real spaces, and stereoscopic Color Passthrough, which can capture the real world and accurately represent it in the headset using depth perception.

Meta Reality, the company’s system for MR, combines all these technologies and “more into a single system for developers to build with”.

“Our vision for true AR glasses will require years of progress making our devices slimmer, lighter, faster, and more powerful, all while consuming way less battery power and generating much less heat,” Bosworth said.

“While our VR devices and software get most of the public attention, we are directing about half of our Reality Labs operating expenses towards our AR initiatives,” he added.

The company believes that when the new devices will hit the market, the industry will enter into a new era of growth and competition and will bring enormous benefits to users and the developer community.

‘Iran ready to return to 2015 nuke deal commitments’

0

Iran is ready to return to its commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal, the senior advisor to the country’s Supreme Leader said.

“Today, we have necessary nuclear capability, but we do not intend to produce a bomb … (as) we consider the production of (nuclear) bombs forbidden on the basis of our (religious) beliefs,” Xinhua news agency quoted Kamal Kharazi as saying at an event here.

“And from a strategic point of view, we do not consider it a path-breaker because if Iran moves toward nuclear weapons, a nuclear race will begin in the region,” the former Foreign Minister added.

Possessing a nuclear weapon is not necessarily a component of security, but “having nuclear technology is a deterrent and shows our ability”, he noted.

Kharazi emphasized that Iran is ready to return to its obligations under the 2015 nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), when many relevant problems have been solved so far.

The only remaining issue is about safeguards, which will be hopefully resolved during the upcoming visit of the experts of the International Atomic Energy Agency to Tehran, he said.

Iran signed the JCPOA with world powers in July 2015, agreeing to put curbs on its nuclear program in return for the removal of the sanctions on the country.

The US, however, pulled out of the deal in May 2018 and reimposed its unilateral sanctions on Iran, prompting the latter to drop some of its nuclear commitments under the deal.

The talks on the JCPOA’s revival began in April 2021 in Vienna. No breakthrough had been achieved after the latest round of talks in August this year.

IPL Player Auction: KKR would go for an Indian wicketkeeper, CSK will look at Sam Curran, says Robin Uthappa

0

Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa shared his thoughts on the list of players Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings would look at, during the IPL Player Auction on December 23.

Uthappa said KKR needs to find a backup for Andre Russell.

“KKR would be looking for three players in this auction — one would be an Indian backup wicketkeeper for Gurbaz. In case, they want flexibility in playing both Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson, Gurbaz is the one who would have to sit out as they are not going to drop Sunil Narine and Andre Russell,” said Uthappa, who is part of JioCinema’s IPL Player Auction Expert Panel.

“Second player is a backup to Andre Russell. IPL is going back to its original format. So, it is not going to be just one or two venues. There will be a lot of travel. KKR is one such team that travels the most. Kolkata is really far away and they travel at least 2-3 thousand kms more than all other teams. So, keeping those things in mind, you will have to have a backup just in case, Russell pulls up or he has not recovered due to back-to-back matches.

“Third would be an Indian fast bowler who would be a backup to Shardul Thakur and Umesh Yadav. They have a couple of youngsters in their group, but they would like to get somebody like Jaydev Unadkat,” he said.

Uthappa further spoke about Chennai Super Kings’ expected buys.

“CSK hey need an all-rounder to replace Dwayne Bravo and they need a solid India middle-order batter as a backup for the players that they already have. In that, I think they will look for the likes of Sam Curran because he has already played for CSK in the past, he’s done well for them and has contributed to their success so they will definitely try and go for him.

“The second one would be an Indian batter in the middle order and the ones that are available in this auction seem to be like Manish Pandey, he has done exceptionally well in the IPL and is also someone who is experienced and would really enjoy playing in the CSK culture. These are the two players they will go for but in case they don’t get them — I am certain there are other options that they already have,” he added.

Sharing the pictures on Instagram, Priyanka wrote, “Perfect winter days. Ps: 1st pic- hubby is really interested in my mirror selfie.”

‘Bigg Boss 16’: Shalin wants to hit MC Stan for nominating Tina Datta

The upcoming episode of ‘Bigg Boss 16′ will be a memorable one as equations between Tina Datta and MC Stan will change after the rapper nominates the actress for eviction.

A promo shared on the channel Colors’ Instagram also shows a heated fight between Stan, who is the new captain of the house, and Shalin Bhanot.

In the clip, Stan and Tina have a war of words after he nominates her. However, Shalin jumps into it and reacts to Stan nominating Tina.

Shalin and Stan were seen almost getting into the fight, while fellow contestants had to intervene to stop them.

During the task, Tina said, “Mukhaute pehne huye hain jewellery ke piche.” Stan replies saying that: “Don’t talk about my jewelry, it is worth more than your house.”

Shalin gets into it and asks him not to act smart. Stan replies saying that he will give one “lafa (slap)”.

Shalin then told Stan, “Tereko maar dunga yahin khade khade.” Both of them get abusive. Stan walks towards Shalin, yelling at him, “Ma-baap pe mat ja”.

When Shalin told Stan that it was him who had started the fight, Stan told him in Hindi, “All my friends are watching this, do you want to live or not?”

Gardner shares her experiences of playing in front of big crowds in India, excited for Women’s U19 T20 WC in South Africa

0

Australia stalwart Ashleigh Gardner said she is looking forward to watching the young guns in action at the ICC Women’s U19 T20 World Cup. And she has also shared her experiences of playing in front of big crowds in India and the legacy she wants to leave on the game.

Sixteen teams will fight it out in the inaugural edition of the ICC Women’s U19 T20 World Cup at the start of 2023 in South Africa. The tournament will see 41 matches played at three different venues and Gardner is excited to witness some of the best young talents in the women’s game showcase their craft and skills.

Speaking to Nasser Hussain and Frankie Mackay on the 100% Cricket Podcast, Gardner stated she would have loved to have played in such a tournament and had that level of exposure at a young age.

“We were actually talking about that the other day,” she said of a chat in her team camp in India.

“It was myself and (teammate) Heather Graham, who are at similar ages and we would have loved to have played in a U19 World Cup as we thought we would have been very good.

“But yeah, obviously it’s fantastic for those young players to have something to strive for (now).”

Elaborating on how it will help to develop the game, Gardner added: “In Australia, we have the U19s and U17s Championships to have something to strive for – to play for your country at quite a young age and in a world, the tournament is fantastic to see and also really that’s going to grow our game globally as well.”

Gardner is currently in the middle of a five-match T20I tour of India, with Australia having taken an unassailable 3-1 lead in the series. The matches so far between the two sides have witnessed some nail-biting contests, with the crowd turning up in large numbers at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai and the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.

The second match at the DY Patil Stadium saw an attendance of more than 45,000 people – the highest for a women’s match in India.

Gardner spoke about her experiences of playing in front of such massive crowds, describing it as ‘exciting’.

Speaking on the women’s game taking off in India, Gardner said: “It’s so exciting to see! The other night, we had 45,000 people at DY Patil Stadium, and to play in front of so many people was pretty special.

“That’s the second-largest crowd that I’ve ever played in front of and, as you know, India fans are very fanatical and quite loud. So yeah, it felt like there were about 90,000 there.”

Gardner also added that it was challenging, in particular, to get used to the noise levels of the Indian fans. “It does take quite a while to get used to,” she said.

“Sometimes you feel like you are under the pump because obviously, the crowd isn’t on your side, so they are hitting dots and there are ones and twos that you actually think are boundaries being hit or they are right on top of the game.

“So we try to take the emotion out of that, knowing that they are going to be supporting the other side and being okay with that. So it’s probably not listening to the crowd too much even though obviously it is very loud.”

Since her debut in 2017, Gardner has established herself as a cornerstone of Australian women’s cricket, with her exploits with both the bat and the ball. Her performances have seen her contribute to Australia winning the T20 World Cup 2022, the Cricket World Cup 2022 and the Commonwealth Games 2022 Gold Medal and she has also been nominated as an ICC 100% Cricket Superstar.

But despite her exploits on the field, it is off the field that Gardner wants to leave a profound impact.

Gardner is also very proud of being a role model to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in Australia and it is a major motivation for her.

“It’s huge and for me, it’s a big driver for what I’m doing as a cricketer and ultimately, as a person,” said Gardner, when reflecting on the legacy she wants to leave behind.

“Because cricket only ever lasts so long in your life. So I guess you’ve got to think about what you’re going to do after your cricketing career and for me, it’s trying to leave a legacy for Indigenous kids to play cricket and to live a really healthy lifestyle.

“So, for me, that’s bigger than cricket. So yeah, it’s exciting to use my platform to spread messages and to try to bring my team along as well with me.”

A ‘War of the Vermin’ at UN after ‘peace pact with nature’ in Montreal

Minutes after UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres hailed the biodiversity agreement reached in Montreal as the start of a “peace pact with nature”, a cockroach showed up to test it.

In the ‘War of the Vermin’, it was summarily squished without a vote in the Security Council!

During his news conference in the UN headquarters’ press briefing room in New York on Monday, the cockroach sauntered in front of the dais and a reporter who was beginning to ask a question pointed it out.

After it was summarily killed, Guterres said amid laughter: “We could have a debate about how we were rescued (from) this threat or if there was a threat to biodiversity.”

“Which means there are always two ways to look at the same thing,” he added about what applies to almost anything at the deeply polarised UN.

The cockroach, about an inch long, was attacked by an Australian reporter, whom Guterres’s Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric called “a girl from the outback”.

Cockroaches that abound in New York City are not an endangered species and are probably not covered by the biodiversity agreement’s agreement to preserve 30 percent of land and water for biodiversity.

Known as the Convention on Biodiversity, the agreement was announced after hectic negotiations early Monday towards the end of the 15th UN conference on biodiversity in Montreal.

After cataloging the gloom of 2022, Guterres saw hope in the agreement involving 196 countries.

“Despite the limitations and long odds, we are working to push back against despair, to fight back against disillusion, and to find real solutions,” he said.

“The most recent example comes from just this morning, at 3 a.m.” when the agreement was announced in Montreal, he said.

“We are finally starting to forge a peace pact with nature,” he added.
