Alyssa Healy ruled out of Australia’s final T20I against India, Tahlia McGrath to captain

0

Australia captain Alyssa Healy has been ruled out of the fifth and final T20I against India, to be held at Brabourne Stadium on Tuesday, after suffering a calf strain in Saturday’s series-clinching seven-run win.

Tahlia McGrath, the vice-captain, said in the pre-match press conference that she will lead Australia in the final match of the series. She had taken over as captain of Australia during their defense of 173.

Alyssa, who took over as Australia captain for the tour of India in the absence of Meg Lanning, strained her calf while batting in the sixth over of the fourth T20I. She limped from the ground after being retired hurt and took no further part in the match.

Tahlia had captained the Adelaide Strikers to their maiden Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) title in November and has also captained her state team South Australia in a domestic one-day cricket tournament. She will now become the eighth player to captain Australia women’s T20I side.

“I’m new to leadership in this team and have been learning a lot on the fly and it probably worked in my favor that I didn’t have long to think about it, I was strangely calm out there, I had a lot of support. (When Richa Ghosh was flying) I had to try and stay calm and keep the team calm.”

“I’ve come off the back of captaining strikers for six weeks where it’s high pressure, the best players in the world are there and that’s what it felt like, I was captaining the strikers with a few extra players,” she said on her first brush in captaining Australia.

In absence of Alyssa, her opening partner Beth Mooney will be on keeping duties for Tuesday’s match, having done the same during the second innings of Saturday’s game. Beth has kept wickets for Perth Scorchers in WBBL and for Western Australia in domestic cricket.

It is yet to be known who will fill in for Alyssa at the top of the order. Other opening options include Tahlia herself, followed by Grace Harris, Phoebe Litchfield, and Ellyse Perry. All four players have previous experience opening the innings in WBBL.

“We haven’t decided yet but I think the good news is we’ve got a lot of options, whether Pheebs (Litchfield) comes in, she’s done it in the Big Bash, myself, Pez (Perry) we’ve got so many options but we’ll have to wait and see,” stated Tahlia.

Australia will be itching to finish their tour of India on a winning note on Tuesday, after having an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series. Their next international assignment is a home ODI and T20I series against Pakistan starting mid-January, followed by defending their Women’s T20 World Cup title in South Africa from February 10-26.

Google to integrate Digilocker in Files app to access official documents in India

0

Google on Monday announced that it will integrate “DigiLocker”, a government-issued document storage service, into the Files app on Android so users can access government-verified documents from the app in India.

At the annual Google for India event, Google announced its partnership with the National eGovernance Division (NeGD), established by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), to roll out the DigiLocker integration within the Files app.

DigiLocker is a key initiative under Digital India, which offers a secure cloud-based platform for the storage, sharing, and verification of documents and certificates.

“We expect that DigiLocker’s integration and partnership on Android will drive smoother and ubiquitous access to digitized documents in a safe and secure manner for all our users,” Abhishek Singh, President, and CEO, NeGD and MyGov, MD and CEO, Digital India Corporation, said in a statement.

The documents saved in Google Files will be stored in an isolated environment on the device and will be accessible only through a unique lock screen authentication.

“As the number of digital users and businesses grow in India, so do the attacks surfaces. AI can help respond to these unprecedented challenges efficiently, effectively, and at scale,” Royal Hansen, Vice President, Privacy, Safety, and Security at Google, said in a statement.

The tech giant said that the functionality is built on a solid foundation of privacy and security.

DigiLocker currently has more than five crore downloads on Play Store. It uses APIs to retrieve, digitize and store documents issued by the government.

Oracle Red Bull Racing team coming to India with their F1 car at Mumbai in March 2023

0

After a remarkable 2022 F1 season, the Oracle Red Bull Racing team is all set to hit the streets of Mumbai once again on March 12, 2023. David Coulthard, the 13- time grand prix champion, will once again give ‘Wiiings’ as he takes the wheel of the F1 car to enthrall the fans in India’s financial capital.

It means that motorsports fans in India will be steering their attention back to the streets of Mumbai when the Oracle Red Bull F1 team arrives in the country. One would be sure not to blink and soak in the whiff of burnt rubber as a mean machine from a decorated team, led by racing legend Coulthard, who is all set to bring the adrenaline-pumping roar of his engine to the maximum city.

The Red Bull team, based in the United Kingdom and having the honor of being the only team to have won the Indian Grand Prix in 2011, 2012, and 2013, returns to India after famously conquering the world’s highest motorable road at Khardung-la, dazzling Mumbaikars previously at the Bandra Worli Sea Link and delighting Delhi with some slick moves at the iconic Rajpath.

Oracle Red Bull Racing team are double winners of this season’s F1 by winning both the drivers’ championship and constructor’s championship. Dutchman Max Verstappen set new records for the most race wins and most points in a single season in 2022.

They had previously won both the Constructors’ and Drivers’ Championships in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013. Alongside Verstappen, Sergio Perez is the second driver of the team while Daniel Ricciardo will be associated as a third driver.

India’s GDP to grow 7% in FY23: Acuite

0

Credit rating agency Acuite Ratings and Research forecast India’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth at 7 per cent in FY23.

In a report, Acuite said India’s annualized GDP growth in Q2 FY23 expectedly, expanded at a slower pace of 6.3 percent year-on-year (YoY) as against 13.5 percent in Q1 FY23, the latter led by the easing of favorable base impact created by the second Covid wave in the previous year.

Nevertheless, India’s growth impetus driven by domestic demand as judged by high-frequency lead indicators continues to remain resilient, withstanding the uncertain and increasingly antagonistic global environment, the report said.

According to Acuity, while pent-up, as well as festive demand, has had a positive role to play in keeping up this momentum, there is a possibility of moderation in some of the lead indicators in the second half of the fiscal unless there is a sustainable and consistent uptick in rural demand.

The loss of working days in a festive heavy month may have caused a scare on the IIP in October, a sharper slowdown in global growth is likely to have a stronger bearing on growth from Q3 FY23 onwards, the report said.

Looking ahead on an annualized basis, Acute said as the favorable statistical effect tapers further, incremental GDP growth is expected to be on the decelerating path.

For Q3 and Q4, growth is likely to slip closer to 4-4.5 percent. This factors in incremental external risks and their impact on domestic growth, despite support from factors such as strength in services demand, upside in rabi sowing, Capex-oriented government expenditure, and the moderation in global commodity prices.

Taking into account the upside and downside factors, we had revised the GDP growth forecast only marginally to seven percent in FY23, Acute said.

The Lucknow police have lodged an FIR against a Twitter handle named, ‘AzaarSRK’, for sharing a snippet of the song ‘Besharam Rang’ from Pathaan with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s face in place of Deepika Padukone.

An FIR has been registered under Section 295A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 66 of the Information Technology (IT) Act.

Several BJP leaders and Twitter users found this objectionable and disrespectful and demanded strict action against the accused. The cyber team of the DGP headquarters is currently investigating the matter.

He even threatened to ban the movie in Madhya Pradesh if those shots are not replaced.

Northeast youth now have computer in hand in place of guns: Centre

The Centre on Monday informed Parliament that since 2014 it has provided ample employment opportunities to the youth of the northeastern region, with Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy saying that they now have computers in their hands in place of guns, which was the case before 2014 when the erstwhile UPA regime was in power.

Replying to a series of questions by Congress MPs from the northeast Vincent Pala and Pradyut Bordoloi on employment opportunities for the youth of the region and development works undertaken there during Question Hour in Lok Sabha, Reddy said that contrary to the situation which prevailed in the region before the BJP-led NDA government came to power at the Centre on 2014, when insurgency and curfews were the norms, now crores of rupees have been spent for the region’s development and even need-based employment has been generated.

Congress MP Pala while asking the question, sought to know why the government was giving “lip service” in the name of claiming the development of the Northeast.

To this, Reddy listed various schemes related to infrastructure development undertaken for the region and the amount of money spent in the past eight years for the purpose.

He even compared the quantum of funds spent on the region’s development by the NDA government since 2014 and those spent by the erstwhile regimes prior to 2014.

“Now the youth of the region has computers in their hands, unlike earlier when they had guns in their hands,” Reddy said while pointing to Opposition benches.

At this, Opposition Congress leaders raised objections to his comments. Former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi was also present in the House.

When Pala sought to know about the region-based employment generation schemes initiated by the Centre and Bordoloi raised the issue of ill-treatment of the region’s youths in various parts of the country despite their expertise in various vocations, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman intervened and informed that prior to the previous budget, she had met all the Finance Ministers of the northeast and sought details about the kind of initiatives needed for the region.

She listed a few schemes started by the Centre, which are aimed at providing region-based employment opportunities to the people of the area.

Rozner closes year with 5-shot win at AfrAsia Bank Open in Mauritius

0

Antoine Rozner produced an impressive display on the final day with a round of 67 at the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open as he pushed aside memories of a play-off loss when the event was last held in 2019.

“That was a different event and a different course. I did not even think about it,” said an elated Rozner as he won the last event of 2022 on the DP World Tour by a record five shots.

“It’s unbelievable. I couldn’t dream of a better way to finish the year. It’s amazing. It felt like playing at home, to be honest. The crowds here were amazing. It was an unbelievable week,” said Rozner, who in 2019 lost a playoff for this title.

He added, “I played solid all week. My first nine holes were one of my best nines ever. To play that front nine, the harder nine, in five under made a massive difference. I didn’t know the scores and I just tried to stay focused in the moment. I started missing a few shots here and there coming but I had a big enough lead to get it done,” he said.

“Winning is very hard, so this is huge. It tests your mind and your game and I was very emotional at the end. We work so hard for this and to get it done is amazing.”

Rozner’s victory in the final event of the calendar year is his third win on the DP World Tour and first since the 2021 Commercial Bank Qatar Masters.

Spaniard Alfredo Garcia-Heredia finished alone in second on 14 under after posting a flawless 67 on his 41st birthday. France’s Julien Brun was two shots further back in third after his level-par 72.

The Frenchman began the day with a two-shot advantage and carded an eagle and three birdies on the front nine to stretch his lead to five strokes at the turn.

He then safely parred the next seven holes in breezy conditions before a bogey-birdie finish saw him end the tournament on 19 under par and banish the memory of his play-off defeat to Rasmus Hjgaard in this event three years ago.

Rozner did well to keep his card clean in the early stages of the fourth round, pulling off a remarkable recovery shot from a tricky lie to save par at the third.

The 29-year-old opened his birdie account from around six feet at the fifth before an outstanding approach into the par-five seventh set up an eagle chance there.

And his ten-foot putt just caught the right edge of the hole and went below ground to move him to 17 under.

Rozner found the green with his tee shot at the par-three eighth and rolled in the putt to pick up another shot before draining a monster birdie effort at the ninth to move five shots clear.

Yet another phenomenal iron shot gave Rozner a birdie opportunity on the tenth but this time he was unable to convert, and a further chance evaded him at the short 11th.

He recovered from an errant tee shot on the 12th to walk away from there with a par, before parring the 13th, 14th, and 15th.

Rozner lagged his enormous birdie putt to tap-in range at the 16th but dropped a shot on the short 17th after missing the green. He made amends at the last, though, almost chipping in for an eagle before knocking in the close-range birdie putt to close out a stunning victory.

An emotional Rozner said: “Unbelievable. It’s a tough game. We practice so hard all year long and a win is a win I’m so glad I got this done. “I’m going to have a few weeks to celebrate now so that’s amazing. I couldn’t ask for anything better than this.”

Google Search hit highest-ever traffic in 25 yrs as Messi dazzled: Sundar Pichai

0

Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai on Monday said that Google Search logged its highest-ever traffic in 25 years of its existence during the nail-biting FIFA World Cup final.

Lionel Messi’s dream of winning the FIFA World Cup finally materialized on Sunday, with Argentina surviving a few anxious moments to register a fighting 4-2 penalty shootout win over defending champions France.

“Search recorded its highest ever traffic in 25 years during the final of #FIFAWorldCup , it was like the entire world was searching about one thing,” tweeted Pichai. He earlier said that it was one of the greatest games ever.

“Well played Argentina and France. Jogo Bonito. Nobody deserves it more than #messi, in the greatest ever to play the game. What a swansong,” posted Pichai. Google Search was founded in 1998 by Sergey Brin and Larry Page.

With a more than 90 percent market share in 2022, Google Search currently dominates the market.

Lex Fridma, host of the Lex Fridman Podcast and research scientist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US, replied to Pichai: “Over a billion people tuned in, united by their love of the game. That’s the best thing about football: it’s a truly global game that unites us.”

“Google did deliver in terms of reliable real-time updates,” another Pichai follower posted.

Universities call for Australian migration reset

0

Australian universities have called for a “hard reset” of the visa process for international graduates.

In a report submitted to a parliamentary committee reviewing the migration system, the peak body representing Australia’s tertiary educators said the current complicated system was seeing the country fall behind the rest of the world, reports Xinhua news agency.

Universities Australia chief executive Catriona Jackson said there are currently more than 100 visa subclasses, describing the system as not fit for purpose.

Australian universities are among the world leaders in international student numbers.

However, according to Universities Australia, less than a third of international graduates use their post-study work permits and only 16 percent become permanent residents.

“This is not surprising when our system has more barriers than gateways, including extended wait times, a lack of visibility around application status, and little certainty in general for prospective students and staff,” Jackson said in the report.

“Meanwhile, our global competitors are increasing the number of international graduates in their migration mix in recognition of the significant contribution they make. Australia is falling behind.”

The body made five recommendations for change in its report, including automatically granting temporary visas to all international students who graduate from Australian universities and upgrading reporting processes to provide applicants with up-to-date information on their visa status.

It also called for a priority system similar to the US Green Card to allow priority workers to receive fast-tracked permanent residency.

The comprehensive review, which was launched by Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil, is expected to hand down its final report in February 2023.

Actor Rakul Preet Singh to appear before ED today in drugs-related money-laundering case

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is all set to grill actress Rakul Preet Singh on Monday in connection with a four-year-old drug case involving trafficking, consumption, and money laundering.

She was issued the summons by the ED on Friday, and will accordingly appear before the agency on Monday.

This is the second time that the actress has been summoned by the agency in connection with this case. Last year also her statement was recorded by the ED.

“The actress has been asked to appear before the investigating agency today. Rakul Preet was questioned by the ED on September 2, 2021. Several Telugu actors were also questioned in the matter,” said a source.

The anti-money laundering agency has been probing drug trafficking and consumption case for the past four years. A high-end drugs cartel was busted in 2017 by Telangana’s Prohibition and Excise department. The racket indulged in supplying LSD and MDMA and other high-end narcotics. On this basis, the present case was lodged by the ED. The ED found that money from that drug cartel was laundered via various channels.

‘Pathaan’ controversy likely to reach MP Assembly

Upcoming film of Shah Rukh Khan and heroin Deepika Padukone controversy has been not yet clear in Madhya Pradesh.

Despite banning the movie’s release on big screens, the matter of the film is going to be discussed in the upcoming Assembly scheduled to commence on Monday.

The controversy around ‘Pathaan’ was triggered after state Home Minister Narottam Mishra objected to a song from the film titled Besharam Rang’, claiming that it hurt the religious sentiments of the Hindu community. Mishra said the way the colors saffron and green have been used in the costumes used in the song is objectionable.

Assembly Speaker Girish Gautam went one step further and asked Shah Rukh Khan if he would dare to watch his movie ‘Pathaan’ along with his daughter.

“Will he (Shah Rukh) dare to watch the film with his daughter? I am asking Shah Rukh Khan, your daughter is 23-24 years old, to watch your movie with her,” Gautam said on Saturday.

With the five-day winter season set to begin on Monday, the issue is likely to be raised by the BJP on the floor of the House.

Besides the BJP and other right-wing groups, some Congress members and several Muslim organizations have also demanded a ban on the release of ‘Pathaan’.

Meanwhile, some other politicians are of the view that boycotting the film will not be the right step.

Congress Rajya Sabha MP Vivek Tankha has come forward in support of the movie, saying he doesn’t support boycotting something as it is an anti-social process.

“No matter whether you like the film or not, it is for the censor board to decide if a movie should be released. If anyone has any problem, he/she should bring it to the notice of the censor board. The censor board will see if there are any objectionable scenes and suggest deleting them accordingly,” Tankha said.

He said that if people start making personal comments against the artists of a film, there is no end to it and it is also not good for the image of the country or society.

After the song Besharam Rang’ was released, #BoycottPathaan started trending on Twitter as many objected to Deepika donning a saffron bikini in the song. ‘Pathaan’ is set to hit the screens on January 25, 2023.
